Good evening. The Bristol businessman Shrien Dewani h`s

appeared in court in South @frica today. After a three year fhght to

stay in Britain, he finally stood before a judge in Cape Town and was

charged with the murder of his wife. A private plane, chartered by the

South African authorities arrived to collect Mr Dewani from Bristol

Airport. On board a doctor, a nurse, members of the South African police

force and interpol. His flight left at 8pm. This morning, he landed in

Cape Town at around 8.30 our time. He was immediately driven across

town, in a police convoy, straight to the Western Cape High Cotrt. Once

in the court, after a short delay, he was brought before a judge.

There's been plenty of reaction to today's developments back hdre.

Earlier, the Justice Ministdr, Simon Hughes, was visiting Bristol and we

asked him if he thought it was right that Shrien Dewani has been

extradited. The UK Government is very clear that

justice must be done in the country where the relevant trial should take

place. Provided the country has a fair judicial system, extradition is

right. It is right thereford that there will be extradition and the

trial will proceed. But people must not be allowed to flee from justice.

We are very clear that we would not export people to a country that

would abuse or torture them, or which would impose the death

penalty. Both families have also givdn their

reactions to the start of proceedings in South Africa. Shrien

Dewani's family have said that he "remains committed to proving his

innocence" and "uncovering the truth behind his wife's murder".

While the family of Swedish national Anni Dewani welcomed the extradition

adding "justice is the only thing in our minds".

Police in Bristol are asking for help to find a man who attacked an

81`year`old woman with a halmer She had just returned home from

collecting her pension at the post office in Sea Mills, at lunch time

yesterday. She was hit several times around the head with the halmer and

had to be treated in hospit`l. She's now recovering at home ` but is said

to be shocked and distressed about what happened.

please call 999. An inquest into the M5 crash has

heard today that CCTV at Junction 25 on the night in question was working

` but that images weren't rdcorded due to a technical fault. A

representative from the Highways Agency told the hearing that there

was no automated system in place on the motorway to detect reduced

visibility, adding that thex relied on cameras positioned along the

carriageway and reports frol the public. The inquest will resume in

the morning. One of Somerset's premier theatres

re`opened tonight ` more th`n a year after going bust. The Brewhouse in

Taunton is now being run by a community group who are convinced

they can make it work. The Scout and Guide Gang Show will bring the

curtain up on the new`look theatre. It's the 25th anniversary of the

Taunton Gang Show. # The time has come to bring down

the curtain...#. In spite of what they say, ht's not

curtain down, it's curtain tp at the newly re`opened Brewhouse Theatre.

There is a bit of pressure. We do have to put on a good show to show

people the Brewhouse is back. February last year saw the Brewhouse

close. Those in charge just ran out of money ` blaming funding cuts for

the theatre's demise. Since then, the local council who own the

building have given a five xear lease to a community group.They re

pinning their hopes on volunteer support.

Everyone here today from thd director to those dusting the

tables, stocking the bar, c`rrying out running repairs, sorting the

admin, and booking new acts ` all unpaid.

When people volunteer, they put their heart into things, whhch is

often not the case when you're relying on paid staff. But ht is

tough, I'm not saying it's dasy # Riding along on the crest of a

wave...#. The Brewhouse is running on the

crest of a wave of enthusiasm ` this show 85% sold out. The acid test

will be ` can they sustain that long`term? And will they be able to

maintain the enthusiasm of the volunteers? Will they succedd where

the business model failed? Two police forces in the West more

than doubled their use of t`sers last year according to figures from

the Home Office.Wiltshire Police deployed the 50,000 volt we`pons 227

times while Dorset Police used them 109 times. The rise in Wiltshire is

down to the fact that many lore officers are actually carryhng

tasers on duty. The headline is we're using it more.

Well, that's because more pdople have got it and they are ushng it.

There are using it properly. I don't have a concern. If they werd not,

I'd obviously have a concern. I ve made it clear to the Chief Constable

but operationally I would bd disappointed if these were being

used in neighbourhoods. These are a response tool, not an everyday tool.
