Good evening. The Bristol businessman Shrien Dewani h`s | :00:11. | :00:14.
appeared in court in South @frica today. After a three year fhght to | :00:15. | :00:19.
stay in Britain, he finally stood before a judge in Cape Town and was | :00:20. | :00:24.
charged with the murder of his wife. A private plane, chartered by the | :00:25. | :00:27.
South African authorities arrived to collect Mr Dewani from Bristol | :00:28. | :00:31.
Airport. On board a doctor, a nurse, members of the South African police | :00:32. | :00:34.
force and interpol. His flight left at 8pm. This morning, he landed in | :00:35. | :00:38.
Cape Town at around 8.30 our time. He was immediately driven across | :00:39. | :00:41.
town, in a police convoy, straight to the Western Cape High Cotrt. Once | :00:42. | :00:44.
in the court, after a short delay, he was brought before a judge. | :00:45. | :01:00.
There's been plenty of reaction to today's developments back hdre. | :01:01. | :01:03.
Earlier, the Justice Ministdr, Simon Hughes, was visiting Bristol and we | :01:04. | :01:06.
asked him if he thought it was right that Shrien Dewani has been | :01:07. | :01:08.
extradited. The UK Government is very clear that | :01:09. | :01:12.
justice must be done in the country where the relevant trial should take | :01:13. | :01:15.
place. Provided the country has a fair judicial system, extradition is | :01:16. | :01:18.
right. It is right thereford that there will be extradition and the | :01:19. | :01:21.
trial will proceed. But people must not be allowed to flee from justice. | :01:22. | :01:25.
We are very clear that we would not export people to a country that | :01:26. | :01:29.
would abuse or torture them, or which would impose the death | :01:30. | :01:37.
penalty. Both families have also givdn their | :01:38. | :01:40.
reactions to the start of proceedings in South Africa. Shrien | :01:41. | :01:43.
Dewani's family have said that he "remains committed to proving his | :01:44. | :01:46.
innocence" and "uncovering the truth behind his wife's murder". | :01:47. | :01:51.
While the family of Swedish national Anni Dewani welcomed the extradition | :01:52. | :01:56.
adding "justice is the only thing in our minds". | :01:57. | :02:05.
Police in Bristol are asking for help to find a man who attacked an | :02:06. | :02:11.
81`year`old woman with a halmer She had just returned home from | :02:12. | :02:14.
collecting her pension at the post office in Sea Mills, at lunch time | :02:15. | :02:17.
yesterday. She was hit several times around the head with the halmer and | :02:18. | :02:21.
had to be treated in hospit`l. She's now recovering at home ` but is said | :02:22. | :02:25.
to be shocked and distressed about what happened. | :02:26. | :02:27.
We have additional patrols hn the area because of what's happdned I | :02:28. | :02:30.
don't want people to be fearful but all I would say is please bd | :02:31. | :02:34.
vigilant. And if anybody seds anyone in the area acting suspiciotsly | :02:35. | :02:41.
please call 999. An inquest into the M5 crash has | :02:42. | :02:45.
heard today that CCTV at Junction 25 on the night in question was working | :02:46. | :02:48.
` but that images weren't rdcorded due to a technical fault. A | :02:49. | :02:51.
representative from the Highways Agency told the hearing that there | :02:52. | :02:55.
was no automated system in place on the motorway to detect reduced | :02:56. | :02:57.
visibility, adding that thex relied on cameras positioned along the | :02:58. | :03:00.
carriageway and reports frol the public. The inquest will resume in | :03:01. | :03:08.
the morning. One of Somerset's premier theatres | :03:09. | :03:11.
re`opened tonight ` more th`n a year after going bust. The Brewhouse in | :03:12. | :03:15.
Taunton is now being run by a community group who are convinced | :03:16. | :03:22.
they can make it work. The Scout and Guide Gang Show will bring the | :03:23. | :03:30.
curtain up on the new`look theatre. It's the 25th anniversary of the | :03:31. | :03:33.
Taunton Gang Show. # The time has come to bring down | :03:34. | :03:39.
the curtain...#. In spite of what they say, ht's not | :03:40. | :03:43.
curtain down, it's curtain tp at the newly re`opened Brewhouse Theatre. | :03:44. | :03:46.
The first live show here for more than a year. No pressure thdn. | :03:47. | :03:50.
You're worried and you're lhke I don't want to get it wrong!". | :03:51. | :03:55.
There is a bit of pressure. We do have to put on a good show to show | :03:56. | :04:03.
people the Brewhouse is back. February last year saw the Brewhouse | :04:04. | :04:07.
close. Those in charge just ran out of money ` blaming funding cuts for | :04:08. | :04:11.
the theatre's demise. Since then, the local council who own the | :04:12. | :04:14.
building have given a five xear lease to a community group.They re | :04:15. | :04:17.
pinning their hopes on volunteer support. | :04:18. | :04:22.
Everyone here today from thd director to those dusting the | :04:23. | :04:26.
tables, stocking the bar, c`rrying out running repairs, sorting the | :04:27. | :04:29.
admin, and booking new acts ` all unpaid. | :04:30. | :04:40.
When people volunteer, they put their heart into things, whhch is | :04:41. | :04:44.
often not the case when you're relying on paid staff. But ht is | :04:45. | :04:54.
tough, I'm not saying it's dasy # Riding along on the crest of a | :04:55. | :05:01.
wave...#. The Brewhouse is running on the | :05:02. | :05:04.
crest of a wave of enthusiasm ` this show 85% sold out. The acid test | :05:05. | :05:08.
will be ` can they sustain that long`term? And will they be able to | :05:09. | :05:12.
maintain the enthusiasm of the volunteers? Will they succedd where | :05:13. | :05:13.
the business model failed? Two police forces in the West more | :05:14. | :05:32.
than doubled their use of t`sers last year according to figures from | :05:33. | :05:34.
the Home Office.Wiltshire Police deployed the 50,000 volt we`pons 227 | :05:35. | :05:37.
times while Dorset Police used them 109 times. The rise in Wiltshire is | :05:38. | :05:41.
down to the fact that many lore officers are actually carryhng | :05:42. | :05:50.
tasers on duty. The headline is we're using it more. | :05:51. | :05:53.
Well, that's because more pdople have got it and they are ushng it. | :05:54. | :05:57.
There are using it properly. I don't have a concern. If they werd not, | :05:58. | :06:01.
I'd obviously have a concern. I ve made it clear to the Chief Constable | :06:02. | :06:04.
but operationally I would bd disappointed if these were being | :06:05. | :06:07.
used in neighbourhoods. These are a response tool, not an everyday tool. | :06:08. | :06:22.
I think people accept that. It's another crucial night for | :06:23. | :06:25.
Yeovil Town in their bid to avoid relegation from the Championship. | :06:26. | :06:28.
Gary Johnson's men travel to fellow strugglers Charlton Athletic, in a | :06:29. | :06:31.
game which will go a long w`y to deciding their fate this se`son | :06:32. | :06:34.
Yeovil's win at the weekend has left them three points behind tonight's | :06:35. | :06:36.
opponents. That's nearly all from us. | :06:37. | :06:39.
Newsnight's starting on Two, now here's David Brain with our weather | :06:40. | :06:40.
forecast. Tomorrow we'll have a fine start. | :06:41. | :07:00.
For most of us a dry day. Overnight, temperatures will tumble fahrly | :07:01. | :07:04.
fast. We may see some patchds by dawn tomorrow morning. Overnight | :07:05. | :07:08.
temperatures are in places. For tomorrow, we have a reasonable day | :07:09. | :07:13.
to look forward to. Davis Ctp showers, perhaps in southern parts | :07:14. | :07:17.
of Dorset, Gloucestershire, Wiltshire. But many others having a | :07:18. | :07:22.
fine, dry day. Temperatures could be up to 15 degrees. The outlook stays | :07:23. | :07:24.
dry. Still a bit chilly. Good night. dry. Maybe a bit of light rain on | :07:25. | :07:35.
Friday. A quiet spell for us. Not so on the other side of the world. As | :07:36. | :07:40.
you have been hearing, there is not a great deal happening in the | :07:41. | :07:44.
weather over the UK over the next couple of days. | :07:45. | :07:49.
Meanwhile, we have been attacked thing -- tracking an | :07:50. | :07:50. |
