and all the pupils to study there. That | :00:00. | :00:08.
Welcome to BBC Points West with Will Glennon and Alex Lovell. Our main | :00:09. | :00:14.
story tonight: More than half the police stations in Avon and Somerset | :00:15. | :00:17.
are to be closed. The Chief Constable says budget cuts have | :00:18. | :00:20.
forced the move but some believe the service will suffer. I think people | :00:21. | :00:26.
are concerned that they want to see police officers locally. Thdy want | :00:27. | :00:32.
access to the police. The ctts were announced on the day that the force | :00:33. | :00:37.
unveiled this new ?20 million centre. We will be looking `t what | :00:38. | :00:46.
the changes mean and how our communities will be affected. | :00:47. | :00:53.
Our other headlines tonight: Swindon footballer Nile Ranger is bding | :00:54. | :00:56.
questioned by police after violent CCTV images are handed to a Sunday | :00:57. | :01:00.
newspaper. Tributes are paid to the yotng man | :01:01. | :01:04.
from Bristol who died after drinking a tribal potion in the Cololbian | :01:05. | :01:07.
jungle And Bath rugby celebrate after making it to their first | :01:08. | :01:21.
European final in six years. Good evening. | :01:22. | :01:32.
A Swindon Town football plaxer is at the centre of a police investigation | :01:33. | :01:35.
after being caught on camer` allegedly assaulting a woman. Nile | :01:36. | :01:38.
Ranger was captured on security cameras as he tried to kick open a | :01:39. | :01:41.
door into his apartment block. It was then he turned on a wom`n next | :01:42. | :01:46.
to him and hit her three tiles. We must warn you that the foot`ge in | :01:47. | :01:49.
Scott Ellis's report shows the assault. | :01:50. | :01:51.
Six foot, two inches tall striker Nile Ranger signed up with Swindon | :01:52. | :01:54.
last year. The former premidrship player moved into a penthouse flat | :01:55. | :01:57.
in this apartment block in the centre of Swindon. In the e`rly | :01:58. | :02:04.
hours of the 13th of April, he was captured on security cameras inside | :02:05. | :02:17.
the building. He is in the car park trying to enter the apartment block | :02:18. | :02:20.
and can be seen kicking the door. The footage also shows him hitting a | :02:21. | :02:24.
woman twice with his right hand before a third blow. Police have | :02:25. | :02:27.
confirmed tonight that Nile Ranger is being questioned about the | :02:28. | :02:30.
alleged assault and ?2000 worth of criminal damage to a lift door, a | :02:31. | :02:34.
wall, and a glass panel at the apartment block. Wiltshire Police | :02:35. | :02:48.
officers are also appealing for the woman to get in contact. Thd | :02:49. | :02:53.
football club says it has invited him to attend a disciplinarx | :02:54. | :03:02.
hearing. It says it is also carrying out its own investigation and | :03:03. | :03:15.
deplores any violence. Avon and Somerset Police made an | :03:16. | :03:18.
extraordinary announcement today ` it is closing 27 police stations. | :03:19. | :03:22.
The Chief Constable says he has to because of budget cuts. The changes | :03:23. | :03:25.
will affect communities right across the area, from Avonmouth to | :03:26. | :03:28.
Minehead. Out of the 27 stations being closed, four will dis`ppear | :03:29. | :03:31.
altogether, while 23 will move to a smaller base nearby ` often sharing | :03:32. | :03:35.
a building with council services. Another 17 will continue as they | :03:36. | :03:39.
are. The other big change involves the opening of three big Police | :03:40. | :03:42.
Centres, at Bridgwater, Keynsham, and Patchway. Clinton Rogers reports | :03:43. | :03:47.
from West Somerset on what the plans mean. | :03:48. | :03:52.
150 years of history will come to an end when they close Williton Police | :03:53. | :03:59.
Station in West Somerset. Pdople need security at it is alwaxs nice | :04:00. | :04:07.
to have it nearby. If it gods the crime level will go up again. It is | :04:08. | :04:14.
not just a baroque unities that will be affected. This document shows | :04:15. | :04:19.
that almost all parts of thd force will be affected as the polhce tried | :04:20. | :04:22.
to reduce the number of buildings they have by a tyrant. Citids and | :04:23. | :04:26.
larger towns do not escape the changes. Bristol, Brislington, and | :04:27. | :04:28.
Bishopsworth will lose their stations. Weston Police Station will | :04:29. | :04:31.
close, so too Shepton Mallet. Both will see police officers opdrating | :04:32. | :04:37.
out of council buildings. All of this comes on a day when Avon and | :04:38. | :04:40.
Somerset were unveiling the 21st century face of policing ` showing | :04:41. | :04:44.
off this ?20 million police centre in Bridgwater. When it is fhnished | :04:45. | :04:50.
in the summer, 600 people whll work from here. Well it is newer, but is | :04:51. | :04:59.
it better for the public? Yds. We are using technology and sole of our | :05:00. | :05:06.
buildings are really decrepht. Some are listed and are so old`f`shioned | :05:07. | :05:12.
that we need to move. They `re mere people want them. That is not true. | :05:13. | :05:19.
The public are not visiting some of the buildings we have. Thred new | :05:20. | :05:22.
centres like this are being built ` the others are at Keynsham `nd | :05:23. | :05:26.
Patchway. Key to them all is the new custody suites where anyone arrested | :05:27. | :05:29.
will be taken day and night. Nine smaller custody suites dottdd around | :05:30. | :05:34.
the area will close. This criminal lawyer says it will lead to police | :05:35. | :05:37.
officers becoming expensive taxi drivers. There is a significant risk | :05:38. | :05:45.
that police officers, who are rightly paid considerable alount of | :05:46. | :05:50.
money, are going to be used as expensive taxi drivers. Labour MP | :05:51. | :05:57.
has already called for a rethink on station closures. We want to put | :05:58. | :06:05.
money into front`line assets. We have to work together. The police | :06:06. | :06:11.
say that getting more bobbids on the police `` bobbies on the be`t will | :06:12. | :06:19.
be the end result. Tributes have been paid following | :06:20. | :06:22.
the tragic death of a teenager from Bristol, who died in the jungle in | :06:23. | :06:26.
Columbia. Henry Miller's body was found abandoned by the side of the | :06:27. | :06:29.
road. He had been taking a hallucinogenic drug during ` tribal | :06:30. | :06:32.
ritual. Fiona Lamdin has thd latest. These are some of the last pictures | :06:33. | :06:38.
of Henry Miller, broadcast on Colombian television. Here hs that a | :06:39. | :06:41.
tribal ceremony in the rainforest, about to take a hallucinogenic drug | :06:42. | :06:48.
that will cost him his life. I am from England and my name is Henry, | :06:49. | :06:54.
he tells the camera. But hotrs later his body was found by the shde of | :06:55. | :06:58.
the road will stop it was the second time he had taken the drink in two | :06:59. | :07:04.
days. The first time he felt nothing, but the second timd he | :07:05. | :07:11.
became seriously ill. So ill that to local men took him to hospital `` | :07:12. | :07:18.
two local men. The men panicked and left him by the side of the road. So | :07:19. | :07:24.
far these men have been questioned but not arrested. This is where | :07:25. | :07:30.
Henry spent the last seven xears of his education. Henry was a really | :07:31. | :07:39.
nice guy. Whenever he saw md outside of school he came and chilldd out. | :07:40. | :07:46.
He wasn't very good at skathng, but he tried to play with us. Hd was a | :07:47. | :08:00.
sensitive and lovely young lan. The drug is very common in Latin | :08:01. | :08:07.
America, but it is very strong. This drug has been used in Latin America | :08:08. | :08:12.
for millennia and there are even churches built around it. The drink | :08:13. | :08:17.
is not toxic and if it is used appropriately any cultural | :08:18. | :08:24.
setting... But I am not surd that the way it is being used currently | :08:25. | :08:29.
is the way that it used to be used. There clearly was not care for the | :08:30. | :08:36.
poor boy. Henry's family, who live in Bristol, have described him as | :08:37. | :08:39.
polite and popular with a great sense of humour. He was due to start | :08:40. | :08:43.
university in five month's time Fiona Lamin, BBC Points West, | :08:44. | :08:47.
Bristol. It is the start of the week and we | :08:48. | :08:51.
are glad you can join us. I`n will be up in the garden to give us a | :08:52. | :08:55.
full forecast later and also laziness at Cheltenham Town ` the | :08:56. | :08:58.
goalie is angry about players admitting they are not pullhng their | :08:59. | :09:07.
weight. The inquest has started into the | :09:08. | :09:10.
death of a sailor who fell hnto Royal Portbury Dock in Bristol. | :09:11. | :09:17.
Gerardo Tonogbanua died in 2011 He was taking part in a safety drill | :09:18. | :09:21.
involving a ship's rescue boat. A winch holding the boat faildd and it | :09:22. | :09:24.
fell 29 metres from the top deck into the water below. The inquest | :09:25. | :09:32.
will last all week. The funeral has been held of a | :09:33. | :09:35.
teenager from Somerset who died while out on a bike ride. | :09:36. | :09:38.
19`year`old Charlie Tugwell, from Peasedown St John was a student at | :09:39. | :09:42.
the City of Bath College. Hhs body was found next to his bike on an | :09:43. | :09:48.
isolated track two weeks ago. The row over where the new Bishop of | :09:49. | :09:52.
Bath and Wells should live took a new turn today, as a special team | :09:53. | :09:56.
arrived in Wells to examine the matter for themselves. The | :09:57. | :10:00.
archbishops' council is there to decide whether the new bishop should | :10:01. | :10:03.
follow tradition and continte to live in the Bishop's Palace, or | :10:04. | :10:06.
whether he should be moved to a house in a nearby village. Well our | :10:07. | :10:12.
reporter Laura Jones has spdnt the day in Wells and is here now. Laura, | :10:13. | :10:16.
just remind us of a few mord details. | :10:17. | :10:18.
Well, this has all been rumbling on for months now. It is a bit | :10:19. | :10:22.
complicated and it has provoked a lot of reaction from people very | :10:23. | :10:25.
strongly opposed to the suggestion that the bishop should live anywhere | :10:26. | :10:28.
other than the Bishop's pal`ce. But today, a decision is a step closer, | :10:29. | :10:31.
after a group called the archbishop's council arrived in | :10:32. | :10:34.
Wells to make their minds up. They are directly representing the | :10:35. | :10:37.
archbishops of Canterbury and York and their decision will be final. I | :10:38. | :10:40.
understand that they have today been taken to visit the rectory hn | :10:41. | :10:43.
Croscome, where it is proposed that the new Bishop will live, and have | :10:44. | :10:47.
also taken a closer look at the living quarters at the palace in | :10:48. | :10:50.
Wells. They have also heard evidence in a court`case type scenarho, from | :10:51. | :10:53.
the various concerned partids. Now I've spent the day in Wells, and | :10:54. | :10:57.
whilst at the palace spotted both the former bishop, the Right | :10:58. | :11:00.
Reverend Peter Price, and the incoming bishop, the Right Reverend | :11:01. | :11:03.
Peter Hancock, who I assume were both there to take part in | :11:04. | :11:06.
proceedings and maybe give dvidence. Whilst there, I also spoke to the | :11:07. | :11:10.
local MP Tessa Munt. I think it is a ludicrous decision that comds out of | :11:11. | :11:13.
the 1940s where we have people making decisions about any | :11:14. | :11:21.
consultation `` with out anx consultation. | :11:22. | :11:27.
What reasons did the church commissioners ` who are suggesting | :11:28. | :11:31.
the bishop should move ` give? Well, the commissioners havd always | :11:32. | :11:35.
said that this is about privacy And that, as the palace in Wells becomes | :11:36. | :11:38.
more and more of a tourist attraction, it is harder for the | :11:39. | :11:41.
palace to provide somewhere suitable for the bishop to live. Of course, | :11:42. | :11:45.
there has been a lot of criticism about the money spent buying the | :11:46. | :11:48.
rectory in Crosscombe ` with some saying that it is a completd waste, | :11:49. | :11:52.
at a time when many other church buildings need work. But today, the | :11:53. | :11:55.
Reverand Arun Aroro, from the Church Commissioners, said that wasn't the | :11:56. | :11:58.
case. The money that has bedn spent is not that there is from pdople's | :11:59. | :12:05.
donations on a Sunday. If they sold the house tomorrow, it would be an | :12:06. | :12:09.
investment that they could lake money from. When will we get final | :12:10. | :12:15.
decision? The council will meet again tomorrow | :12:16. | :12:19.
and we are expecting a decision in the next week or so ` in tile for | :12:20. | :12:23.
the new bishop to be enthroned in June. | :12:24. | :12:25.
Millions of poll cards and pamphlets have begun landing on our doormats | :12:26. | :12:28.
in the run`up to next month's elections. A minority of us will be | :12:29. | :12:32.
choosing who sits on our cotncils, but all adults can vote for who | :12:33. | :12:35.
represents the South West in the European Parliament. Some of the | :12:36. | :12:38.
favourites in that contest `re at Bristol University for a debate this | :12:39. | :12:42.
evening. Let us join our political editor, Paul Barltrop, who hs there: | :12:43. | :12:49.
welcome to Bristol University. The debate started half an hour ago | :12:50. | :12:55.
at the top of the stairs. Wd are making sure that we do not | :12:56. | :13:01.
interrupted. There are membdrs of the European Parliament frol all the | :13:02. | :13:06.
major political parties herd. There are also people from other parties, | :13:07. | :13:14.
such as labour and the Greens, who missed out last time. There are a | :13:15. | :13:22.
total of eight parties taking part in the election. We will eldct six | :13:23. | :13:29.
members of the European Parliament using a proportional voting system. | :13:30. | :13:40.
UKIP are hoping to come first. They have been popular recently, but how | :13:41. | :13:47.
about younger people. Gener`lly the sentiment within the University I | :13:48. | :13:50.
would say, is pro`Europe. Ghven that we do not have a UKIP society, that | :13:51. | :13:55.
kind of sums that up. There are ways in which it could operate more | :13:56. | :13:58.
efficiently and more effecthvely. But overall, I think the benefits | :13:59. | :14:01.
outweigh the disadvantages. I think in the press we do get a lot of the | :14:02. | :14:05.
negative sides of the Europdan Union and we do not always get thd | :14:06. | :14:12.
benefits. They are all quitd positive about Europe, but that does | :14:13. | :14:15.
not necessarily represent the population. The problem for people | :14:16. | :14:27.
trying to get a pro`European vote, is that people may not bothdr to | :14:28. | :14:32.
vote. Thank you. | :14:33. | :14:38.
There was some relief this weekend for Bristol Rovers fans frol their | :14:39. | :14:40.
relegation troubles, while the possibility of the drop for Yeovil | :14:41. | :14:45.
became a reality. Sabet is here with the latest. | :14:46. | :14:52.
That is all coming up, but first, have divisions opened up in the | :14:53. | :14:55.
Cheltenham Town squad? Goalkeeper Scott Brown made his views known | :14:56. | :14:58.
about two fellow players' commitment after Saturday's defeat at Rochdale. | :14:59. | :15:01.
Now, the chairman of Cheltenham Town has said any of his players not | :15:02. | :15:05.
giving their best do not deserve to be at the club. Here is our | :15:06. | :15:08.
Gloucestershire reporter, Steve Knibbs. | :15:09. | :15:10.
Rochdale's two goals left Cheltenham with their sixteenth defeat of the | :15:11. | :15:12.
season and frustration for goalkeeper Scott Brown. With nothing | :15:13. | :15:18.
to celebrate on his birthdax, he told the media afterwards that some | :15:19. | :15:21.
of his team`mates have openly admitted that they are not pulling | :15:22. | :15:28.
their weight. I asked a few of the lads if ever trying 100% and their | :15:29. | :15:36.
answer was, no. If you cannot come in every day with a smile on your | :15:37. | :15:40.
face then what are you doing playing professional football. The players | :15:41. | :15:43.
Scott Brown were referring to have not been identified, but thd | :15:44. | :15:46.
chairman of the club posted a video response today and did not lix his | :15:47. | :15:52.
words. When you have well`p`id professional footballers saxing that | :15:53. | :15:55.
they are not trying during the training session I think it is very | :15:56. | :16:03.
sad and those two players nded to look at themselves. Me and the fans | :16:04. | :16:10.
do not want players who are not giving 100%. Last year Cheltenham | :16:11. | :16:15.
were in the play`off semi`fhnals, so, with the change of forttne this | :16:16. | :16:18.
season, fans are angry that some players may not care. Fans `re | :16:19. | :16:23.
spending good money to travdl around the country to support the team To | :16:24. | :16:29.
find that players are not pttting the effort and is very | :16:30. | :16:40.
disappointing. The team`matds involved d will now face thd first | :16:41. | :16:43.
ever disciplinary hearing against players in the history of the club. | :16:44. | :16:46.
As such, the chairman is taking advice from the PFA, but, as his | :16:47. | :16:50.
interview made clear today, if what it is alleged the players s`id turns | :16:51. | :16:54.
out to be true, their futurd here is very much in doubt. Steve Knibbs, | :16:55. | :16:57.
BBC Points West, Cheltenham Town. And an update tonight that | :16:58. | :16:59.
Cheltenham have confirmed their assistant manager, Neil How`rth is | :17:00. | :17:03.
leaving the club at the end of this season, although their manager, Mark | :17:04. | :17:06.
Yeates, has signed a new ond`year contract. | :17:07. | :17:08.
Now, if you are a Bristol Rovers fan, this weekend will cert`inly be | :17:09. | :17:11.
one to remember. Finally, it seems the side's fortunes may be on the | :17:12. | :17:15.
up. On Saturday, the Rovers took a massive step towards securing their | :17:16. | :17:18.
Football League status with a 2`1 win against Wycombe. Lee Brown and | :17:19. | :17:21.
David Clarkson scored the goals Rovers are now three points above | :17:22. | :17:25.
the League Two relegation zone. A point in the final game will | :17:26. | :17:34.
guarantee their safety. It is just a under a year ago Yeovil | :17:35. | :17:39.
was feeling the joys of being promoted to the Championship. But | :17:40. | :17:42.
the bus tour, cheering fans, and trophy must all seem like a distant | :17:43. | :17:45.
memory. Now, after a season of punching above their weight, the | :17:46. | :17:48.
underdogs are returning to League One. Their fate in the Championship | :17:49. | :17:51.
sealed on Friday with a 2`0 defeat away at Brighton. Come back up | :17:52. | :17:58.
again. Have another go. We will still be there following thdm every | :17:59. | :18:01.
week. We are punching far above our weight here. This is Yeovil in the | :18:02. | :18:05.
championship, what do you expect? But we have had a good season. Six | :18:06. | :18:09.
years ago, they were still hn the Conference. We have come up, and we | :18:10. | :18:13.
can still turn around and come back, can't we lads? We can come back | :18:14. | :18:22.
Well, the man credited with masterminding Yeovil's rise to | :18:23. | :18:24.
Championship is their managdr, Gary Johnson. Thanks for coming hn. Now | :18:25. | :18:29.
relegation is confirmed, wh`t do you make of this season? It has been | :18:30. | :18:35.
enjoyable. Now one enjoys bding relegated, but it was an incredible | :18:36. | :18:41.
feat to make it to the final. We were competitive. We had sole good | :18:42. | :18:47.
results. But we also had sole defeats because of the level at | :18:48. | :18:54.
which we were playing. You have been little old Yeovil in the | :18:55. | :18:57.
Championship, will you now be big old Yeovil in League One? I don t | :18:58. | :19:03.
think so. We need to be bigger and we need to look at making the club | :19:04. | :19:09.
bigger and better, to make ht a more entertaining arena. We are trying to | :19:10. | :19:16.
do that. But the version ond was where we were last year and we | :19:17. | :19:20.
competed well. Hopefully thd club can compete well again. You had a | :19:21. | :19:28.
board meeting today ` it is no secret that you want more | :19:29. | :19:35.
investment. What was the result The Board of Directors have been very | :19:36. | :19:40.
supportive. A manager is always going to Africa for a bigger budgets | :19:41. | :19:47.
to be more competitive `` a manager is always going to as for a bigger | :19:48. | :19:59.
budget. Are you going to be staying here next year? We do not know. We | :20:00. | :20:04.
have to wait for the answers to the questions. I hope that the club | :20:05. | :20:09.
still wants to move forward and get bigger and better. I would be happy | :20:10. | :20:15.
to be the manager that takes them forward. Thank you. | :20:16. | :20:23.
On to rugby, and Bath Rugby have the chance to win only their thhrd | :20:24. | :20:27.
trophy in 16 years after be`ting the Wasps in the semifinal of the | :20:28. | :20:30.
European Challenge Cup. Thex will now face Northampton in next month's | :20:31. | :20:34.
final, six years after they last won the competition. Damian Derrick has | :20:35. | :20:35.
more. Despite the wet weather, thd lure of | :20:36. | :20:39.
seeing their side go in search of some silverware bought the Bath fans | :20:40. | :20:46.
out in good numbers. Not thd day for expansive rugby ` rather thd | :20:47. | :20:49.
forwards sticking the ball tp their jumper. And that is exactly what | :20:50. | :20:58.
Bath did for the first try ` Anthony Perenise at the bottom of this pile | :20:59. | :21:01.
of bodies. Wasps`old`boy Rob Webber enjoyed going back to his former | :21:02. | :21:05.
club ` touching down twice. Firstly thanks to his opposite numbdr, whose | :21:06. | :21:08.
radar was somewhat off, and then to his fellow forwards who rumbled over | :21:09. | :21:19.
yet again. A mistake at the line. I was in the right place at the right | :21:20. | :21:22.
time. At that stage, victorx looked comfortable ` before the Wasps' pack | :21:23. | :21:26.
decided they would join in. Bath were then reduced to 14 men for this | :21:27. | :21:30.
tackle, but hung on for the win in a nerve`wracking finale. It w`s very | :21:31. | :21:38.
tense. They got themselves hn position to win it. I /fant`stic | :21:39. | :21:51.
this season. Five years ago, we might not have made such good use of | :21:52. | :21:58.
the Vantage. `` bridges of the advantage. We like tense gales. It | :21:59. | :22:08.
was fantastic. So, a Europe`n final against Northampton for the fans to | :22:09. | :22:13.
look forward to. And they whll get a good look at their opponents this | :22:14. | :22:17.
Friday at the Rec ` as Bath look secure a place in the Premidrship | :22:18. | :22:19.
play`offs. Damian Derrick, BBC Points West. | :22:20. | :22:23.
Just one final bit from me. In snooker, Gloucester's Michadl Wasley | :22:24. | :22:26.
has been knocked out of the World Championships earlier today, while | :22:27. | :22:29.
Judd Trump resumes his match in a few minutes' time 10`6 up against | :22:30. | :22:37.
Ryan Day. A webcam in a nesting box occupied | :22:38. | :22:41.
by two breeding barn owls in Somerset has attracted hundreds of | :22:42. | :22:44.
thousands of hits from across the world. The owls, named Brenda and | :22:45. | :22:50.
Boris, had seven eggs. The first chick hatched last Wednesdax and was | :22:51. | :22:54.
named Bard, as it was born on William Shakespeare's birthday. | :22:55. | :22:57.
There are now another two ndw arrivals. 286 boxes have bedn | :22:58. | :23:03.
installed across the county by the Somerset Wildlife Trust and the Hawk | :23:04. | :23:06.
and Owl Trust to fight the decline in barn owl numbers. Apparently the | :23:07. | :23:19.
bloggers gave the adult those names. `` the owls. | :23:20. | :23:22.
