The crisis at Avon and Somerset Police.

:00:07.:00:12.

The Chief Constable remains suspended after allegations over

:00:13.:00:14.

It's feared the investigation could take months.

:00:15.:00:26.

UWT The investigation of the Chief Constable is a very rare event. The

:00:27.:00:31.

suspension of the Chief Constable is even rarer. I have been trying to

:00:32.:00:34.

recollect the number of times it has happened. It is probably no more

:00:35.:00:38.

than three or four times in the past 20 years.

:00:39.:00:41.

Our other headlines tonight: affected, but is the organisation

:00:42.:00:52.

The young riders hit by a car after a motorist spooked

:00:53.:00:55.

Europe from a different angle ` we speak to people from the continent

:00:56.:01:00.

An artist?s home is put up for sale, but what do you make of the decor?

:01:01.:01:13.

Avon and Somerset Police insisted it was business as usual today

:01:14.:01:20.

after the suspension of the Chief Constable yesterday afternoon.

:01:21.:01:22.

Nick Gargan was sent home after complaints about inappropriate

:01:23.:01:26.

Independent investigators will conduct an inquiry which could go

:01:27.:01:31.

on for months, and there are worries that could

:01:32.:01:34.

The Deputy Chief Constable had planned to give

:01:35.:01:38.

an interview today to reassure the public but he pulled out.

:01:39.:01:41.

Our home affairs correspondent Steve Brodie reports.

:01:42.:01:44.

It was business as usual today at police headquarters,

:01:45.:01:47.

where Acting Chief Constable John Long was in charge

:01:48.:01:50.

but he was too busy to explain where the suspension has left the force.

:01:51.:02:01.

Obviously there was a sense of shock here at Avon and Somerset police

:02:02.:02:04.

headquarters following the sudden suspension of Nick Gargan after what

:02:05.:02:09.

have been described as a number of serious allegations of inappropriate

:02:10.:02:12.

behaviour towards female police officers and staff.

:02:13.:02:19.

It is a neutral act but it is done for the purpose to protect the

:02:20.:02:26.

member of staff. It is there to protect witnesses who might be

:02:27.:02:29.

called upon to give statements. More importantly, for the investigation

:02:30.:02:33.

to take place in a neutral environment. That is without any

:02:34.:02:37.

tension or pressure on anyone. Officers from the

:02:38.:02:42.

Independent Police Complaints Commission were interviewing those

:02:43.:02:43.

involved in the allegations It takes time to complete. That

:02:44.:02:52.

creates a difficulty for the public face of the police force. It creates

:02:53.:02:56.

difficulties for internal cohesion and direction. That is why you have

:02:57.:03:01.

the Chief Constable. They provide leadership and boost morale and

:03:02.:03:05.

provide confidence, strategic direction. The professional and head

:03:06.:03:10.

of service. Having said that, the whole point of having a Deputy Chief

:03:11.:03:14.

Constable is that there is somebody who has been appointed to that post

:03:15.:03:18.

who is capable of taking on the job of Chief Constable in their absence.

:03:19.:03:23.

Nick Gargan was an active follower of social media

:03:24.:03:26.

and rarely out of the limelight since joining the force a year ago.

:03:27.:03:29.

He was never off Twitter, and even just before his suspension

:03:30.:03:32.

The chairman of the Police Federation in Somerset told the BBC:

:03:33.:03:37.

It is right that these allegations are investigated and it is the right

:03:38.:03:41.

The IPCC, whose officers are carrying out the investigation,

:03:42.:03:46.

refused to confirm the exact number of women officers and police staff

:03:47.:03:49.

who have claimed to be victims of the alleged inappropriate behaviour.

:03:50.:03:57.

A law graduate who's accused of falsely claiming she'd been

:03:58.:04:00.

raped multiple times has been giving evidence in court.

:04:01.:04:04.

Rhiannon Brooker was studying at UWE when she made the claims.

:04:05.:04:08.

Her boyfriend spent more than a month in jail before being released.

:04:09.:04:11.

She's now facing 20 charges of perverting the course of justice.

:04:12.:04:15.

Rihannon Brooker leaving court today after giving evidence

:04:16.:04:25.

In 2008, she was a student here at Birmingham City University

:04:26.:04:29.

She began a relationship with a 46`year`old man who she would

:04:30.:04:33.

Paul Fensome ` a railway signalman ` was in custody for 36 days

:04:34.:04:41.

before Rihannon Brooker, interviewed under caution by police,

:04:42.:04:43.

said the claims were an invention and Mr Fensome was finally freed.

:04:44.:04:46.

Miss Brookes was charged with perverting the course of justice

:04:47.:04:51.

But surprisingly, perhaps, she pleaded not guilty and now

:04:52.:04:57.

claims the accusations against her former boyfriend were correct.

:04:58.:05:11.

In court today, she said she was aware that things were wrong in

:05:12.:05:16.

their relationship but still a strong feelings towards him even

:05:17.:05:19.

though she told friends he could be violent. Rhiannon Brooker denies all

:05:20.:05:24.

20 charges of perverting the course of justice. A trial he that Bristol

:05:25.:05:29.

Crown Court could last for several more weeks.

:05:30.:05:42.

Three young girls from Somerset have spoken of the terrifying moment a

:05:43.:05:46.

motorist spooked their ponies before hitting two of them. The police are

:05:47.:05:49.

now trying to hunt down the driver who left the scene with a smashed

:05:50.:05:53.

windscreen. Michelle Ruminski reports.

:05:54.:05:54.

They went past and they did not like it. We have to build it up again

:05:55.:05:58.

thanks to the driver. Facing their fears after a

:05:59.:06:04.

frightening ordeal. Today Madi, Caitlin, Danni and their horses had

:06:05.:06:06.

to be led back out onto the road. The girls say they were riding their

:06:07.:06:10.

ponies up this lane in Upper Cheddon when a car started revving its

:06:11.:06:14.

engine and doing wheel spins. The He was coming towards us at speed.

:06:15.:06:24.

We did the slowdown sign and the stop sign. We did big gestures and

:06:25.:06:26.

he did not listen. The car then hit two of the ponies.

:06:27.:06:31.

Startled, one of them backed up, its hooves smashing the windscreen on

:06:32.:06:35.

the passenger side. The car made off towards Taunton, leaving the girls

:06:36.:06:38.

to fend for themselves. The girls were hysterical and

:06:39.:06:50.

totally in shock. I was shaking and when I got off the pony, it was a

:06:51.:06:54.

bit scary. The girls managed to stay on their

:06:55.:07:00.

ponies. Only Belatrix suffered a bruise. But their parents say the

:07:01.:07:04.

girls and the horse could have been killed and are keen to find the

:07:05.:07:07.

person who did this. The police say The man should be ashamed of

:07:08.:07:16.

himself. I do not think I should comment on camera. I hope this

:07:17.:07:25.

passion as a guilty conscious. I am very very angry. The police are

:07:26.:07:31.

looking for a driver of a red car which looks like a Vauxhall Zafira.

:07:32.:07:35.

It is very important that if people do know something they come forward

:07:36.:07:38.

with a name. That is the most important thing at the best lead we

:07:39.:07:42.

can have. The parents say it is lucky though girls were not

:07:43.:07:46.

seriously hurt and hopefully with time they will be able to put this

:07:47.:07:48.

frightening episode behind them. We're glad you can join us

:07:49.:08:18.

for this sunny midweek evening. Why fish is completely

:08:19.:08:21.

off the menu at a Swindon school. And hitting the heights of luxury

:08:22.:08:26.

camping in the centre of Bristol. The owners of Cotswold Airport have

:08:27.:08:29.

been fined over the death of a fire chief who was killed

:08:30.:08:32.

when a gas cylinder exploded. Gloucester Crown Court heard

:08:33.:08:35.

his death could have been prevented if guidelines had been in place

:08:36.:08:40.

for the safe use of the cylinders. Kemble Air Services Ltd

:08:41.:08:43.

was fined ?75,000. It had previously been found guilty

:08:44.:08:45.

of breaching health A General Medical Council hearing

:08:46.:08:47.

began today into the future of a Bristol doctor who pleaded guilty to

:08:48.:08:52.

taking indecent images of children. Dr Michael Chongkee Lok, from

:08:53.:08:54.

Kingswood, filmed people on a phone He'd worked at the

:08:55.:08:58.

Great Western Hospital in Swindon. Now a panel in Birmingham is

:08:59.:09:03.

deciding if he's fit to practice. People who are living in the West

:09:04.:09:08.

but were born in mainland Europe are being encouraged to vote

:09:09.:09:13.

in the European elections. Poles, Romanians and others

:09:14.:09:15.

from the continent attended a meeting in Yeovil last night

:09:16.:09:18.

aimed at getting more of them Figures show that people born

:09:19.:09:22.

in Europe are even less likely to vote in the upcoming elections than

:09:23.:09:26.

those born in Britain. It's not often you see people

:09:27.:09:29.

in Britain standing in respect But most at this meeting in Yeovil

:09:30.:09:39.

were born on the continent. It's part

:09:40.:09:44.

of a campaign to get more Europeans Many Polish people and many other

:09:45.:09:58.

expat communities fear they have not been taken seriously by now by

:09:59.:10:02.

politicians. What Europeans are seeing to the politicians is that

:10:03.:10:06.

there are votes here, take me seriously.

:10:07.:10:11.

You might think Europeans living in Britain would be keen to vote

:10:12.:10:14.

But in fact, expat Europeans are even less likely

:10:15.:10:18.

Since 2006, I was not unemployed for one day. We love the country and the

:10:19.:11:03.

way you live your lives here. I think Britain gained a lot from

:11:04.:11:10.

immigration. From what I have heard in the media, Eastern European 's

:11:11.:11:14.

bring a lot to the economy. UKIP were on tonight's panel,

:11:15.:11:16.

arguing for complete reform Because of the numbers handy

:11:17.:11:32.

shortages of housing... `` the numbers and shortages.

:11:33.:11:36.

Whatever the voters think, the challenge here is to get more

:11:37.:11:39.

of them to express that at the ballot box.

:11:40.:11:44.

If you're interested in the European elections, we have a big debate on

:11:45.:11:48.

Sunday Politics this weekend. Bristol Rovers' plans to build

:11:49.:12:13.

a new stadium near the University of the West

:12:14.:12:16.

of England have been delayed again. It follows an application made to

:12:17.:12:18.

English Heritage to have the site of their current stadium listed

:12:19.:12:21.

as a war memorial. Rovers, who have already agreed to

:12:22.:12:24.

sell the Memorial Stadium to Sainsbury's to help fund

:12:25.:12:27.

their new home, say they still hope Three Olympic champions

:12:28.:12:30.

from the West have been selected in Great Britain's team

:12:31.:12:34.

for the European Championships later Helen Glover renews her partnership

:12:35.:12:36.

with Polly Swan Peter Reed is named in the men's

:12:37.:12:39.

eight while Alex Gregory forms part It is through the competition of

:12:40.:12:48.

trialling. It is a very tense and stressful time for everybody. We

:12:49.:12:50.

always handle it professionally and people are fighting on the water

:12:51.:12:53.

rather than a changing room. It is always good to be through the worst

:12:54.:12:54.

of it. Great Britain this week at the

:12:55.:12:55.

European Gymnastics Championships. Claudia Fragapane, from Bristol,

:12:56.:12:58.

and Ruby Harrold, who trains in Portishead, have both

:12:59.:13:00.

been selected for the competition From a young age, this woman has set

:13:01.:13:17.

the bar high and now her dream is within reach. A rising star of

:13:18.:13:23.

gymnastics, tomorrow she will make her debut at the European

:13:24.:13:28.

Championships. . I did not take it in at first because I thought, is it

:13:29.:13:31.

really me that has done that? But I work so hard and all the other

:13:32.:13:36.

people have worked so hard to get here as well. It is absolutely

:13:37.:13:43.

amazing. My mum cried. Obviously, she always cries. And my dad. He did

:13:44.:13:47.

not cry that he was really happy for me and my family as well. Key chains

:13:48.:13:57.

`` she trains at the gymnastics club here. Our family said it is

:13:58.:14:02.

something she has opened for for a long time. Claudia is fabulous. She

:14:03.:14:08.

makes my job very easy and it's fantastic to coach. She is bright,

:14:09.:14:12.

fun and we have a great time. If you're having a bad day, she can

:14:13.:14:17.

pick up on that and make you feel better. She is a very special

:14:18.:14:21.

person, really. She might be the youngest member of the squad at just

:14:22.:14:25.

16, but she is still making a baking pressure on. She will be the first

:14:26.:14:30.

British woman to do a double street with a full twist. And Claudia is

:14:31.:14:33.

not the only woman from the West hoping to bring success to British

:14:34.:14:38.

gymnastics this week. She will be joined by another local gymnast, who

:14:39.:14:43.

trained here that the Academy in Portishead. The team begin their

:14:44.:14:50.

campaign to model and are hoping to make it through to this weekend's

:14:51.:14:51.

final. A Bristol student is just weeks away

:14:52.:14:58.

from attempting to become the youngest woman to row unaided

:14:59.:15:01.

across part of the Pacific Ocean. 29`year`old Elsa Hammond will row

:15:02.:15:06.

2,400 miles across the Pacific, She's taking part in the Great

:15:07.:15:11.

Pacific Race, which is the first ever rowing race in the Pacific

:15:12.:15:17.

Ocean, and she joins us now. Tell us about what you have signed

:15:18.:15:31.

up for. I'm going to be out for three months in the middle of the

:15:32.:15:36.

ocean by myself, carrying everything I need with me, completely

:15:37.:15:40.

unsupported. I roll`out of the day in California on the 7th of June,

:15:41.:15:44.

bound for Hawaii and a 24 foot rowing boat. We saw you in training

:15:45.:15:50.

and you were tipped over, won't you? You have got to be prepared for

:15:51.:15:56.

everything. Absolutely. It has been such idea of finding out about that

:15:57.:15:59.

and so many different things to think about and all the different

:16:00.:16:04.

logistical bits of it, and training and preparation. So many things I

:16:05.:16:08.

had not considered. Registered in boats and everything. What is going

:16:09.:16:14.

to be the biggest challenge? We found out about you and it said, she

:16:15.:16:19.

is looking forward to three months of complete isolation, rowing for 16

:16:20.:16:24.

hours a day, facing great white sharks and facing 40 foot waves. I

:16:25.:16:30.

thought, is she really? I am hoping the sharks will stay at a distance!

:16:31.:16:34.

I was hearing the other day about what to do if you find yourself in

:16:35.:16:38.

the water with a great white shark. Hopefully that will not happen. What

:16:39.:16:44.

would you do? Apparently unique to stay vertical and do not kick around

:16:45.:16:48.

too much so you did not look like a winded animal. Do not urinate,

:16:49.:16:52.

because that might make you mix cleared and therefore weak. Time to

:16:53.:16:58.

face it and punch it on the nose. That is the tip of the day. How did

:16:59.:17:02.

you get into all this? The whole thing? Yes. I started drawing on the

:17:03.:17:11.

river at university. I enjoyed it. Whilst I was there, I have about

:17:12.:17:16.

oceangoing about eight years ago. I thought I would really love to do

:17:17.:17:19.

that one day but I was in the middle of my degree and it was not the

:17:20.:17:24.

right time. I put it off because people I thought would think I am

:17:25.:17:28.

weird. Thank you for telling us about it and please be given. And

:17:29.:17:34.

some big celebrity backing as well. She will raise a lot of money for

:17:35.:18:13.

charity. The head teacher sent out letters to all 416 pupils, asking

:18:14.:18:18.

them not to bring any fish products into the school. This extreme action

:18:19.:18:21.

was taking to protect their children was not just allowed to fish but

:18:22.:18:26.

contact with any oil or papers can cause anaphylactic shock. This is a

:18:27.:18:32.

life`threatening issue. If it were anything less, we would not need to

:18:33.:18:37.

be as drastic. But her life is at stake if we do not get things right

:18:38.:18:41.

in this case. We have ten children who are wheelchair users and we have

:18:42.:18:44.

got other children across the school with different needs. We do have

:18:45.:18:49.

children with allergies. These are not as severe as the one that we

:18:50.:18:53.

have taken this step four. Some parents do not feel they have been

:18:54.:18:58.

consulted enough. It is not proper. They never consulted anyone. Our

:18:59.:19:10.

children like fish. The whole school should not be affected for one

:19:11.:19:15.

child, really. Allergies can happen to anybody at any time. It could

:19:16.:19:19.

happen to a child at school at a later date. We should be very

:19:20.:19:24.

positive towards this. The number of allergy sufferers is only increase.

:19:25.:19:28.

So much so that a trial was launched in to test if exposure to minute

:19:29.:19:32.

amounts of peanut protein could gradually cure the allergy. With an

:19:33.:19:39.

84% success rate, it is very promising. It will be years, though,

:19:40.:19:43.

before this treatment is extended to other allergies. In the meantime, a

:19:44.:19:49.

child that the Robert Le Kyng school is having more tests in the hope

:19:50.:19:52.

that this allergy can be controlled without affecting the rest of the

:19:53.:19:53.

school. It's being marketed as a home unlike

:19:54.:20:20.

any other in the Forest of Dean. The renowned ceramic artist Mary Rose

:20:21.:20:23.

Young is selling up. She's famous for her brightly coloured creations

:20:24.:20:27.

and it's a theme that's seeped into every room in the house. Our

:20:28.:20:29.

Gloucestershire reporter, Steve Knibbs, went to take a look round.

:20:30.:20:34.

From the outside, this house looks like any other, but get inside and

:20:35.:20:38.

it's, well, striking. The home of ceramic artist Mary Rose Young has,

:20:39.:20:41.

over the years, become an extension of her own brightly coloured

:20:42.:20:42.

creations. Wearing a pink tie seemed At us like we're inside a mug or a

:20:43.:20:53.

room and then I realised that as I started decorating, it was a canvas

:20:54.:20:58.

to do what I wanted to do. Wearing a pink tie seemed perfect as we

:20:59.:21:00.

strolled through quirky and colourful rooms, but it seems

:21:01.:21:07.

nothing escapes the paintbrush. I made this pedestal sink. I had it in

:21:08.:21:10.

the room door of Harvey Nichols. Got a raw did, to plug it in for me. I

:21:11.:21:15.

will demonstrate the water now. When you switch on the tap, low and

:21:16.:21:24.

behold, stripey water. How about the bathroom where the sink and toilet

:21:25.:21:26.

blended into the walls? You paint is blended into the walls? You paint is

:21:27.:21:34.

on fire them in the kiln to a lower temperature. Then they are therefore

:21:35.:21:38.

good. Just like the Victorians did. That is my spiral staircase. Up on

:21:39.:21:44.

the 10th room, we want one of these, Mary Rose told me she was selling up

:21:45.:21:48.

because she wanted to buy a nearby pub and decorated rooms in her own

:21:49.:21:53.

way to let out. This is like a work of art that I have done and you're

:21:54.:21:56.

only as good as your new piece, aren't you? These letting rooms are

:21:57.:22:03.

such a good idea that I am itching to get going with. With an asking

:22:04.:22:08.

price of just under half ?1 million, who will buy a house like this? I'm

:22:09.:22:15.

hoping it will sell to a fan of Mary Rose. And it is very unique in its

:22:16.:22:20.

own right. It has been created by Mary Rose herself. There is nothing

:22:21.:22:25.

else quite like this. It is truly amazing. Mary Rose's pottery has

:22:26.:22:33.

been bought by Royal Family, foreign presidents and rock stars, but we

:22:34.:22:37.

are unsure if any have put in an offer for the house just yet. It is

:22:38.:22:46.

a bit bland for my taste! The one thing you should not camouflage in a

:22:47.:22:54.

room is the toilet. You might miss! Exactly. We have talked about that a

:22:55.:22:59.

lot on the programme. Now we are talking about interesting places to

:23:00.:23:03.

live, you can spend a night in the sky above Bristol. These four metro

:23:04.:23:09.

caravans have been winched onto a Hotel's rooftop in the city centre.

:23:10.:23:13.

The purpose`built and feature luxury interiors. The owners say Bristol

:23:14.:23:18.

was only the second place in the world to have this accommodation,

:23:19.:23:22.

the other being South Africa. Not good scared of heights. Thank you to

:23:23.:23:29.

Mary Rose. Up to the roof. Ian was just listening to us about the

:23:30.:23:33.

sharks before, Welch? A bit of an expert. `` Welch you? I can assure

:23:34.:23:45.

you, these moments are never forgettable with shacks, and I'm
