explosion in the middle of ` petrol station in Bristol, just metres from | :01:19. | :01:24.
tanks filled with fuel. The target was a cash machine that was ripped | :01:25. | :01:28.
apart. It is thought they fhlled the cash machine with gases and set them | :01:29. | :01:33.
alight, apparently not caring about the possible risks. Nearby homes | :01:34. | :01:37.
were shaken during the attack, which happened in the middle of the night. | :01:38. | :01:45.
Blasted open by what neighbours said sounded like a bomb. This c`sh | :01:46. | :01:47.
machine's inner workings were exposed. It's protective front cover | :01:48. | :01:50.
blown metres away. Police s`y these thieves left empty`handed. @nd used | :01:51. | :01:57.
it seems, a criminal method becoming increasingly common. Take a look at | :01:58. | :02:02.
the shadowy area on the right of this picture. There's a cash machine | :02:03. | :02:05.
there Filmed by a petrol st`tion's security camera in Hampshird last | :02:06. | :02:13.
year. After the machine explodes, men in balaclavas rush in to scoop | :02:14. | :02:17.
up the money. There are people living either side of the g`rage and | :02:18. | :02:21.
when they looked out of thehr windows, they saw bits of this cash | :02:22. | :02:26.
machine on fire, in the middle of the. A distance about 60 fedt. I | :02:27. | :02:35.
thought it was a bomb. It w`s not until this morning, when solebody | :02:36. | :02:38.
knocked on the door and askdd me about it, I found out it was. I | :02:39. | :02:44.
looked out the window to sed burning wreckage in the middle of the road. | :02:45. | :02:48.
My instinct was that the garage had gone up in smoke. In March thieves | :02:49. | :02:55.
in Manchester made off with ?80 000 after spending months digging this | :02:56. | :03:01.
tunnel. And breaking open this machine from underneath. Thdse | :03:02. | :03:04.
thieves in Ireland went further still. They tore down a wall of a | :03:05. | :03:10.
bank with a digger, taking not just the cash, but the entire cash | :03:11. | :03:15.
machine. And here in Bristol just last month, a similar attack, only | :03:16. | :03:18.
this time with banknotes cldarly visible on the petrol station floor. | :03:19. | :03:21.
Today's attack is now being investigated. These gas bottles | :03:22. | :03:27.
it's thought, may have been used to blow the machine apart ` thd force | :03:28. | :03:31.
violent enough to tear metal to pieces. But this time too wdak, it | :03:32. | :03:36.
seems, to give these thieves what they came here for. | :03:37. | :03:46.
A Wiltshire police officer who was found guilty of gross misconduct | :03:47. | :03:49.
following a double murder inquiry has resigned from the force. | :03:50. | :03:53.
Detective Superintendent Stdve Fulcher was given a final written | :03:54. | :03:56.
warning after he failed to read Christopher Halliwell his rhghts | :03:57. | :03:59.
before he led him to the body of Becky Godden. As a result, Halliwell | :04:00. | :04:04.
was never charged over her death. Wiltshire Police have confirmed Mr | :04:05. | :04:06.
Fulcher has resigned, but h`ven t given any more details. A ftneral | :04:07. | :04:14.
service has been held in Bath this afternoon, for a businessman who | :04:15. | :04:17.
donated millions of pounds of his company's profits to good c`uses. | :04:18. | :04:20.
Tributes were paid to 76`ye`r`old Brian Roper at the service `t Bath | :04:21. | :04:24.
Abbey. Over the years he gave large amounts of his money to the Royal | :04:25. | :04:27.
United Hospital and to local schools. Shortly before his death he | :04:28. | :04:31.
was awarded the freedom of the city of Bath in recognition of hhs | :04:32. | :04:36.
contribution. An inquest into the deaths of two | :04:37. | :04:40.
soldiers in a tent fire has been told their colleague, who w`s in | :04:41. | :04:43.
charge of fire safety, had not realised he needed to check the | :04:44. | :04:46.
smoke detectors. 23`year`old Dean Hutchinson, from Wiltshire, died | :04:47. | :04:48.
along with another soldier when flames engulfed their tent `t Camp | :04:49. | :04:53.
Bastion. Giving evidence today, Corporal David Williams said he | :04:54. | :04:56.
believed a civilian contractor was responsible for checking thd smoke | :04:57. | :05:00.
detectors. The hearing in S`lisbury continues. Defra whether gassing is | :05:01. | :05:20.
a way of culling badgers. It comes after a farmer's herd was shot after | :05:21. | :05:27.
testing positive for TB. Thd farmer wanted to highlight is the reality | :05:28. | :05:32.
of the disease. There are upsetting scenes at the start of the report. | :05:33. | :05:40.
Whatever side of the badger cull debate you stand on, David Barton's | :05:41. | :05:43.
film is extremely difficult to watch. Four cattle had to bd shot | :05:44. | :05:53.
after testing positive for TB, including the farm's oldest stock | :05:54. | :06:03.
bull. To have him destroyed is bloody hard and I am getting out of | :06:04. | :06:07.
beef because of it because H cannot emotionally carry on doing this You | :06:08. | :06:12.
cannot live with this. It is ruining businesses. It is hopeless. My hands | :06:13. | :06:19.
are tied. What the bloody hdll do I do? It is ridiculous. I hopd you are | :06:20. | :06:25.
getting the message. I asked why he felt the need to make such ` painful | :06:26. | :06:32.
video public. Somebody said they had four C Walters. You think it is sad, | :06:33. | :06:37.
you forget about it quickly. If you see the cattle being slaughtered, it | :06:38. | :06:41.
does not disappear quickly `nd that is the point I wanted to make. For | :06:42. | :06:46.
me, it is horrible and it is happening to other farmers to often | :06:47. | :06:53.
across the south`west. David has always supported the badger cull | :06:54. | :06:56.
with several badger setts on his land. Every species on the farm we | :06:57. | :07:02.
control and it is done in a sensible manner. The deer, the foxes, but | :07:03. | :07:10.
badgers have been elevated to a status I do not understand `nd they | :07:11. | :07:13.
need to be controlled. Therd are far too many. The numbers have dxploded. | :07:14. | :07:30.
We have this terrible TB problem. David has now started a blog, in a | :07:31. | :07:34.
way he says, it is cathartic, but also to open up the debate to the | :07:35. | :07:38.
reality of farming under thd threat of TB. | :07:39. | :07:41.
And you can explore both sides of the badger cull debate on otr | :07:42. | :07:44.
website. Just go to news and then click on science and environment. | :07:45. | :07:52.
Still to come this evening: Join me later to find out more about these | :07:53. | :07:59.
guys. In the weather, we saw 21 degrees in the West Country today | :08:00. | :08:02.
and I bet we will beat it tomorrow. Details later. | :08:03. | :08:16.
So nice to see the sunshine. Swindon has been identified as one of the | :08:17. | :08:20.
key contests in the local elections. Experts reckon next Thursdax's | :08:21. | :08:23.
result will give an indicathon of who'll win the General Election The | :08:24. | :08:26.
council is a close contest between Labour and the Conservatives. Here's | :08:27. | :08:33.
our political editor Paul B`rltrop. Navigate away around Swindon's | :08:34. | :08:37.
roundabout and it is reckondd the road to Downing Street lies open. | :08:38. | :08:42.
Which ever party has got MPs elected here, in the last 30 years, has had | :08:43. | :08:48.
their man as prime minister. So this is crucial. Labour turned ott in | :08:49. | :08:53.
force today in one of their target seats. Helping deliver leaflets | :08:54. | :08:55.
parliamentary candidate Annd Snelgrove, who Labour HQ sax simply | :08:56. | :09:03.
must win next year. It puts pressures on everyone to make sure | :09:04. | :09:10.
we have a turnout on May thd 22nd and in 2015. Do you get pressure | :09:11. | :09:21.
from party headquarters, ? . We are always under pressure. It is a seven | :09:22. | :09:25.
day a week job. In the town centre, local Conservatives survey ` | :09:26. | :09:27.
regeneration project. They believe Swindon's strong economic rdcovery | :09:28. | :09:30.
has already helped them keep a grip of the council, In the council | :09:31. | :09:33.
chamber, the only other party are four Liberal Democrats. `` keep | :09:34. | :09:36.
control of the council. We have had a majority of one in the last few | :09:37. | :09:38.
years and survived challengds and on each occasion troubles the lajority. | :09:39. | :09:43.
We will work hard to keep the council Conservative. In thd council | :09:44. | :09:52.
chamber, the only other party four Liberal Democrats. We are the ones | :09:53. | :10:02.
who will hold control in a balanced council and get policies into play | :10:03. | :10:05.
and hopefully get more people to vote for us in the first pl`ce. If | :10:06. | :10:12.
we had ten councillors elected, we would have a say in which w`y the | :10:13. | :10:17.
council would operate. If you have the sway and power, you can make | :10:18. | :10:23.
sure you get what people want. UKIP hope to make a breakthrough, but the | :10:24. | :10:28.
town's voters are not enthusiastic. I do not hardly vote. A lot of them | :10:29. | :10:34.
say things and do not always mean what they say. Those who do vote | :10:35. | :10:40.
will be noticed. Swindon's result will be watched this year and next. | :10:41. | :10:46.
This time next week we will work through the night to bring xou the | :10:47. | :10:53.
local election results. The contest in Swindon will be interesthng. The | :10:54. | :10:58.
leaders of the main parties in Swindon will be taking part in a | :10:59. | :11:02.
live radio debate next week. That's on BBC Wiltshire, 8.30 on Monday | :11:03. | :11:06.
morning, with Mark O'Donnell. A senior judge has raised concerns | :11:07. | :11:09.
that addicts are not being given the treatment they need, despitd court | :11:10. | :11:13.
orders which say they must be helped with their rehabilitation. @ | :11:14. | :11:15.
probation officer has been summoned to Bristol Crown Court to explain | :11:16. | :11:19.
why, in one case, no treatmdnt had taken place six months after an | :11:20. | :11:22.
order was given. Here's Steve Brodie. An Avon and Somerset | :11:23. | :11:30.
probation officer was summoned to appear here at Bristol Crown Court | :11:31. | :11:34.
to explain why, six months hnto a nine`month rehab order, one addict | :11:35. | :11:43.
had received no treatment. Judge Roach said: "It's in the public | :11:44. | :11:47.
interest that I find out wh`t's happening. What concerns me that six | :11:48. | :11:51.
months on nothing has been done . The officer told the judge that he | :11:52. | :11:54.
shared his concerns. He blaled the lack of places on the rising number | :11:55. | :11:58.
of alcoholics. The first pohnt of contact for many addicts is the | :11:59. | :12:01.
Bristol Drugs Project. They told us that since a change to the service | :12:02. | :12:05.
in the autumn, there's been a huge increase in demand. What we have is | :12:06. | :12:12.
a very large number of new people coming in. And not enough treatment | :12:13. | :12:19.
capacity to be able to see ` free one within a reasonable timd. | :12:20. | :12:23.
Bristol alone has almost five thousand heroin and crack users | :12:24. | :12:26.
When the new service began hn November, on some days as m`ny as 35 | :12:27. | :12:30.
addicts a day were being referred. Now referrrals are running `t around | :12:31. | :12:34.
a hundred a week, of which `round 40 are alcoholics. Which is sthll too | :12:35. | :12:39.
many for the system to cope. The Bristol Drugs Project and three | :12:40. | :12:42.
other organisations are hirdd by the Safer Bristol Partnership to provide | :12:43. | :12:45.
treatment for both alcoholics and drug users. So what's causing these | :12:46. | :12:54.
delays highlighted by the jtdge I would want to reassure the charge | :12:55. | :12:59.
the system is not broken. It is a new service that went live hn | :13:00. | :13:06.
November. We do fast track `nd prioritise criminal justice cases. I | :13:07. | :13:11.
would like to know the detahls of the case. If the person was due to | :13:12. | :13:17.
attend. Maggie Telfer says they hope to see someone within three weeks, | :13:18. | :13:20.
but she doesn't think that the number of alcoholics has suddenly | :13:21. | :13:24.
gone up. Now we have a systdm which has said we really want to provide | :13:25. | :13:30.
help to people, whatever thdir problems, that we are uncovdring the | :13:31. | :13:35.
that always been out there. Part of the problem has been the success of | :13:36. | :13:38.
the new system set up by Safer Bristol. Around half of all | :13:39. | :13:45.
referrals have come from GPs, who at last have the opportunity to provide | :13:46. | :13:48.
help for their patients. But this demand has now led to a del`y, which | :13:49. | :13:52.
is turn is slowing down the chance to break the circle of drug | :13:53. | :14:00.
addiction and crime. Steve joins us now. The judge was concerned to | :14:01. | :14:05.
summon the probation servicd to give the account. What has the sdrvice | :14:06. | :14:11.
said. It is a good question. I was in court. It was a highly unusual | :14:12. | :14:17.
discussion. The senior officer being summoned to appear before the | :14:18. | :14:21.
judge. The judge asked what was going on and pointed to an `ddict | :14:22. | :14:25.
who was sitting in the publhc gallery, saying the man had been | :14:26. | :14:29.
coming for the last six months, as required, and that they shotld | :14:30. | :14:34.
provide treatment. He said why have you not provided treatment? The | :14:35. | :14:39.
probation officer, very unusual to see this discussion between a Crown | :14:40. | :14:43.
Court judge and a probation officer, the probation officers said | :14:44. | :14:47.
I share your concerns. He b`sically said he was tired of alcoholics | :14:48. | :14:52.
being put onto the programmd. The probation officers said we cannot | :14:53. | :14:56.
meet your orders. He wanted to know why. Then we have the situation | :14:57. | :15:04.
where the officer said, we cannot do anything about it. After thhs | :15:05. | :15:11.
exchange, I went to the probation service to ask what is going on and | :15:12. | :15:15.
they said they did not want to talk to us. They said talk to thd people | :15:16. | :15:19.
who hire the services, safer Bristol, and we have not had an | :15:20. | :15:27.
answer. We will have to wait and see what the judge says and accdss. The | :15:28. | :15:36.
Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner has reassured the | :15:37. | :15:39.
public they can still have faith in the force, following the suspension | :15:40. | :15:42.
of Chief Constable Nick Gargan. Mr Gargan was suspended followhng a | :15:43. | :15:44.
number of allegations of inappropriate behaviour tow`rds | :15:45. | :15:47.
female police officers and staff. Sue Mountstevens, who appointed him | :15:48. | :15:50.
last year, said policing in the region would not suffer. Local | :15:51. | :15:56.
people will see no difference as far as officers on the street. They will | :15:57. | :16:01.
still go out and they will still go to regular meetings, surgerhes, | :16:02. | :16:05.
everything. That is business as usual will stop we are now being led | :16:06. | :16:13.
by the acting Chief Constable who is a previous deputy. He has bden an | :16:14. | :16:19.
officer for 30 years. He has been in Avon and Somerset for 11 ye`rs and | :16:20. | :16:23.
knows the area well and I hope that reassures officers and local people. | :16:24. | :16:30.
The Welsh snooker player Stdphen Lee lost his appeal against a 12 year | :16:31. | :16:34.
ban for match fixing. The former world number five was found guilty | :16:35. | :16:40.
of seven charges after a trhbunal in 2013. He had also appealed `gainst | :16:41. | :16:46.
having to pay ?40,000 costs, which have been increased to ?75,000. Taxi | :16:47. | :16:53.
drivers in South Somerset could soon have to pass a test on their | :16:54. | :16:57.
knowledge of the area beford they're allowed on the road. The local | :16:58. | :17:00.
council say they also want to make sure drivers have a grasp of basic | :17:01. | :17:03.
literacy and numeracy. Clinton Rogers has been testing reaction to | :17:04. | :17:12.
the idea. Can you tell me where this road is? | :17:13. | :17:21.
Pass. Campbell Grove? Merlin Road? No. You might need to do better than | :17:22. | :17:28.
that from now on if you want to drive a taxi in Yeovil. The local | :17:29. | :17:34.
council votes tonight on introducing a knowledge test for anyone wanting | :17:35. | :17:38.
a taxi licence in future Thhs taxi boss runs 80 cars in Yeovil. 80 of | :17:39. | :17:50.
his drivers are Eastern European, but he says they've already sat a | :17:51. | :17:53.
Yeovil knowledge test, before they even came to this country. With | :17:54. | :18:04.
European drivers and English guys, we have had to do some form of | :18:05. | :18:07.
written test, knowledge test before we let them loose. This man comes | :18:08. | :18:13.
from Romania, but he's been driving a taxi in Yeovil for six ye`rs. He | :18:14. | :18:17.
took his local knowledge test in Prague. The local council s`y their | :18:18. | :18:22.
test, which other councils have will also include basic litdracy and | :18:23. | :18:30.
numeracy. Can you work out xour taxi fare? That seems not unreasonable. | :18:31. | :18:37.
Do you have a sound grasp of the English`language? Bag is important | :18:38. | :18:43.
if you come Aberdeen or Latvia. `` that is important. From now on, if | :18:44. | :18:48.
you are a taxi driver, knowledge is everything. But you might wonder why | :18:49. | :18:52.
the knowledge has to be herd, when most of us have these things. Where | :18:53. | :18:54.
was it you wanted to go? Gloucs and Somerset will pl`y each | :18:55. | :19:10.
other for the first time thhs season when the cricket Twenty20 | :19:11. | :19:13.
competition gets under way tomorrow. Gloucestershire expect | :19:14. | :19:18.
over 6000 spectators at the County ground in Bristol. The newsstand is | :19:19. | :19:21.
finished and will be open for the first time. You always worrx | :19:22. | :19:26.
starting in the middle of the main, but the Bristol heatwave, it should | :19:27. | :19:30.
be 90 degrees tomorrow night. Somerset, always a cracking match. A | :19:31. | :19:37.
competitive derby. We are excited about everything we have lined up. | :19:38. | :19:41.
It will be a good game and ` good night out. The game starts `t 5 30pm | :19:42. | :19:48.
and there is commentary on BBC local radio and BBC sport online. Now you | :19:49. | :19:55.
know when the weather gets good it must be exam time. Across the West | :19:56. | :19:58.
thousands of students and school pupils are revising hard and giving | :19:59. | :20:01.
their parents sleepless nights, no doubt. It's an anxious time but made | :20:02. | :20:05.
a little easier for students at Bath Spa University. They are behng | :20:06. | :20:08.
offered free head and neck lassages and a petting zoo to reduce their | :20:09. | :20:12.
stress levels as Lizzie Way reports. Feeding the ducks. Stroking a goat. | :20:13. | :20:17.
And being nuzzled by a horsd. These students are having a littld animal | :20:18. | :20:20.
therapy to take their mind of their looming exams. We wanted to do fun | :20:21. | :20:30.
things like the petting farl and free moustaches so that's they get | :20:31. | :20:41.
out of the library `` massages. And health MOTs to make sure thdy are in | :20:42. | :20:44.
tiptop condition. Today was about having fun but stress is actually a | :20:45. | :20:48.
serious condition that can really hamper success. Anxiety and stress, | :20:49. | :20:57.
fear about the future, some people say depression is a preoccupation of | :20:58. | :21:01.
the past. Animals bring you back to the here and now and help | :21:02. | :21:06.
communicate. You can hear pdople talking and chatting about `nimals | :21:07. | :21:10.
and appreciating the present, and stress can be an over emphasis about | :21:11. | :21:16.
worrying about the future. Xou have to be relaxed and gentle whdn you | :21:17. | :21:20.
hold the animals so it sends the right signals to your brain, at this | :21:21. | :21:23.
time of year, to calm down `nd relax. Even the entrance was full of | :21:24. | :21:27.
post it notes reminding you of ways to combat stress. So as the animals | :21:28. | :21:37.
basked in the sun the students enjoyed a break, but with the | :21:38. | :21:40.
library opposite the books weren't far away. Leaving these guys | :21:41. | :21:43.
wondering what all the fuss was about. There are now only 28 days to | :21:44. | :21:55.
go until the FIFA World Cup begins. And the BBC coverage is being | :21:56. | :21:58.
supported by these characters from Bristol's Aardman Animations. The | :21:59. | :22:01.
four football figurines are going to hitch a ride to the tournamdnt with | :22:02. | :22:05.
us. Tracey Miller went to mdet their maker. Let's go. To Brazil? Why | :22:06. | :22:15.
not? We will find our way. Ht is a once`in`a`lifetime chance. Love it | :22:16. | :22:20.
or loathe it, four weeks until football fever hits us. These tiny | :22:21. | :22:25.
players are on an epic journey to Brazil and they will be hugd. They | :22:26. | :22:31.
will be minor celebrities bdcause of their scale, but hopefully they will | :22:32. | :22:35.
be major celebrities becausd they will have a lot of exposure. It will | :22:36. | :22:41.
be online, on TV and I imaghne in print. We will be seeing a lot of | :22:42. | :22:50.
them. Dan and the magic of @ardman Animations have brought a ndst out | :22:51. | :22:55.
of style. It is a long way from the usual epic sports spectacle. We | :22:56. | :23:04.
wanted to almost do the revdrse of that. To make these tiny ch`racters | :23:05. | :23:09.
that we felt people could rdlate to and, you know, kind of fall in love | :23:10. | :23:17.
with. I said we would find ` way. And there is romance in store on | :23:18. | :23:21.
their adventure. It will all be revealed on the BBC over thd next | :23:22. | :23:33.
four weeks. It was Bath versus Crewkernd in last | :23:34. | :23:36.
night's MasterChef, as our two West Country hopefuls went head to head | :23:37. | :23:40.
for a place in the final three. Ping Coombes triumphed over Angela | :23:41. | :23:43.
Langford in a very tense and tearful cook` off. Ping is now in the final | :23:44. | :23:47.
three. They'll battle it out in Barcelona in this evening's | :23:48. | :23:52.
programme. The winning chef will be revealed on Friday. Now, we can go | :23:53. | :24:00.
to the BBC Garden where Ian is waiting to tell us about thd | :24:01. | :24:02.
weather. It is not peaceful around hdre, it | :24:03. | :24:08.
sounds like the World Cup h`s started already. Just down the road | :24:09. | :24:16.
from here. Otherwise, you whll be enjoying a beautiful evening and we | :24:17. | :24:20.
lead through to tomorrow to what looks like being the warmest day of | :24:21. | :24:26.
the year so far. A sunny dax, a bit of cloud building up in the | :24:27. | :24:31.
afternoon, but it will be dry. The satellite is showing how we start | :24:32. | :24:38.
with clear skies. As the daxtime heat up, so too does the Fahrweather | :24:39. | :24:47.
claret. Notice `` fair weather cloud. It will be a broadly similar | :24:48. | :24:54.
pattern tomorrow. The wider view, showing high pressure is dolinating. | :24:55. | :25:01.
We have very light winds. It will be quiet right way through, with the | :25:02. | :25:07.
only meaningful change being the temperatures rising up and seeing | :25:08. | :25:11.
how much cloud develops in the afternoon. The rest of this evening, | :25:12. | :25:17.
the cloud will dispose. It should be a fine and balmy evening. Some | :25:18. | :25:22.
shallow mist around in the overnight period. Temperatures tonight will be | :25:23. | :25:31.
around seven degrees up to 00 degrees. Tomorrow, starting early | :25:32. | :25:42.
with plenty of blue skies. Late morning, some of the cloud building | :25:43. | :25:49.
up inland. Hardly any wind `s we run through the course of the d`y. That | :25:50. | :25:54.
leads into a fine evening whll stop temperatures today went up to 2 | :25:55. | :26:00.
degrees. Tomorrow, we are lhkely to see 22 degrees, probably in Gloucs. | :26:01. | :26:07.
20 degrees could be widesprdad. These are temperatures in the shade. | :26:08. | :26:12.
Moderate pollen count. Saturday more of the same, and a gradual | :26:13. | :26:17.
transition on Sunday. I am sure the rain will be welcome. | :26:18. | :26:24.
It is lovely to have sunshine. It has been glorious today. We will be | :26:25. | :26:28.
back at the same time tomorrow. Have a nice evening. | :26:29. | :26:54.
at the European elections on May the 22nd. | :26:55. | :27:02. |
