The main story: Another Iraqi city has fallen into the hands of | :00:00. | 3:59:59
militants. Welcome to BBC Points West with | :00:00. | :00:00.
Liz Beacon and David Garmston. Unemployment falls again le`ving | :00:00. | :00:00.
some companies struggling to find enough workers to keep | :00:07. | :00:12.
production going. It's totally turned the othdr way. | :00:13. | :00:24.
We have more jobs than candhdates at the moment. | :00:25. | :00:26.
We'll be investigating the political consequences of the latest | :00:27. | :00:28.
The plans to give every young child a hot dinner, but some schools still | :00:29. | :00:42.
The campaign to encourage the older workers to pass on the | :00:43. | :00:49.
And it's a stick up, the grown`ups beating the children | :00:50. | :00:54.
at their own game as a football sticker craze sweeps Britain. | :00:55. | :01:03.
Unemployment in the West has fallen for the third month in a row. | :01:04. | :01:07.
There are now fewer people out of work here than | :01:08. | :01:09.
But with more jobs on offer, and fewer people looking for them, | :01:10. | :01:16.
some employers have told us they now rely on workers from | :01:17. | :01:20.
Here's our business correspondent Dave Harvey. | :01:21. | :01:29.
We've grown our staff from 08 in the last years will stop as Britain | :01:30. | :01:38.
battled the recession there was good money to be made in comfort food. | :01:39. | :01:44.
Business is going well and our forecast is good for the next few | :01:45. | :01:46.
years. And that means fewer people | :01:47. | :01:50.
signing on at job centres. I've been tracking the numbdrs of | :01:51. | :02:01.
people signing on in Bristol and across the West Country. I've put | :02:02. | :02:05.
together a little graph. Have a look at this in 2009 the figures rocket | :02:06. | :02:17.
up. Now they are starting steadily to decline. I'm really glad to say | :02:18. | :02:23.
there are more jobs on offer to people. Our clients are busher. | :02:24. | :02:30.
Things have totally flipped around. We have more jobs than candhdates. | :02:31. | :02:35.
We are going further afield to recruit. | :02:36. | :02:36.
And at Marshfield, they really mean further afheld | :02:37. | :02:38.
Yes, they still draw on the Wiltshire villages and towns, | :02:39. | :02:41.
but a vital ingredient in their workforce are Polish people, | :02:42. | :02:43.
They were very positive abott the opportunities. They wanted ` | :02:44. | :03:00.
long`term, full`time work. They were worth `` they were willing to put | :03:01. | :03:07.
themselves out and find the work. Jobs like these will also bring | :03:08. | :03:12.
comfort to ministers, boosthng their claims that the economy is | :03:13. | :03:16.
recovering. There enough skhlled people to fill them? | :03:17. | :03:21.
The economy will be the single biggest factor in deciding next | :03:22. | :03:23.
So with things improving, does this leave Labour without a way | :03:24. | :03:28.
I'm joined by Richard Grahal, the Tory MP for Gloucester `nd | :03:29. | :03:34.
by Todd Foreman, who's hoping to be Labour MP for North East Solerset. | :03:35. | :03:46.
You've got to hand it to thd government. They've tackled the | :03:47. | :03:53.
problem? Well foreign emploxers are welcome. But you haven't mentioned | :03:54. | :04:01.
the pressure on living standards. The average Briton is worse off | :04:02. | :04:08.
since David Cameron came into power. The government is doing nothing to | :04:09. | :04:14.
address that. Do you accept that? The figures are good. Unemployment | :04:15. | :04:21.
in Gloucester is now 21.5% better than it was in 2010. There hs no | :04:22. | :04:27.
room for complacency. I had a jobs were last Friday with over 2000 jobs | :04:28. | :04:33.
available. Lots of people are still looking for jobs. What is | :04:34. | :04:37.
interesting is if you look `t the indicators, you have manufacturers | :04:38. | :04:42.
across the South West saying they are expecting to employ people over | :04:43. | :04:49.
the sex `` over the next six months. Crystal ball Azinger is find but | :04:50. | :04:55.
what we saw today was a fall in wage growth. That's taken a huge hit | :04:56. | :05:04.
since 2010. We welcome on vholent figures falling. Do you accdpt that | :05:05. | :05:16.
many of these new jobs are low paid and often on poor terms and | :05:17. | :05:22.
temporary? Now I don't think that's the case. If you look at thd growth | :05:23. | :05:26.
of the jobs across Gloucestdrshire they are in a whole range of | :05:27. | :05:33.
different sectors. Many of them are highly paid and the skills gap is | :05:34. | :05:37.
tending to be at the top and not at the bottom. Should there be a change | :05:38. | :05:44.
in your approaches to the issue of immigration? | :05:45. | :05:54.
Labour is saying we will look at immigration issues but we don't want | :05:55. | :06:03.
to close the door. It's pretty clear that people are really resentful of | :06:04. | :06:09.
immigrants who are coming into the UK for reasons of wanting to live | :06:10. | :06:14.
here and get benefits. European citizens who are coming herd to work | :06:15. | :06:17.
and plug skills gaps are welcome and have been a long time. The real | :06:18. | :06:25.
challenge is to make sure enough of our young people are studying the | :06:26. | :06:29.
subjects which will lead to good careers. We have to leave it there. | :06:30. | :06:34.
As World Cup fever begins to grip the country, the police havd | :06:35. | :06:39.
launched a campaign warning of an expected rise in domestic vholence. | :06:40. | :06:42.
Figures from four years ago showed an increase of 30% | :06:43. | :06:44.
The Avon and Somerset force has now trained up extra officers | :06:45. | :06:49.
Across the UK, nearly one million women experience | :06:50. | :06:57.
at least one incident of domestic abuse each year. | :06:58. | :07:00.
During big football tournamdnts the number of incidents reported to Avon | :07:01. | :07:03.
We want to protect victims. After they contact the police thex should | :07:04. | :07:19.
be safer. We are working re`lly hard across the service to ensurd either | :07:20. | :07:26.
this. It is World Cup time `nd we recognise there has been an increase | :07:27. | :07:30.
in incidents in the past. Wd want to take the opportunity to makd sure we | :07:31. | :07:32.
are prepared. The trouble with football is that it | :07:33. | :07:33.
tends to go with alcohol, especially around a big tournament | :07:34. | :07:36.
like the World Cup. Add in frustration | :07:37. | :07:38.
and disappointment and the Posters are going up in bars | :07:39. | :07:39.
and clubs across the region to warn people that | :07:40. | :07:44.
losing is no excuse for violence. And extra staff are being ptt | :07:45. | :07:48.
on during and I think perpetrators have to | :07:49. | :08:01.
understand there is no excuse. Whether you are drunk or yotr team | :08:02. | :08:05.
is lost, there is no excuse for abusing a victim. | :08:06. | :08:06.
The domestic abuse charity Next Link says people don't have to stffer | :08:07. | :08:09.
in silence and they're callhng on offenders to think about | :08:10. | :08:11.
A roof has collapsed on a house in Bath after a fire on the | :08:12. | :08:20.
Emergency crews were called to Vernon Terrace just before 3.00pm. | :08:21. | :08:26.
An investigation's now underway into what happened. | :08:27. | :08:38.
There was a rapid spread of fire and a significant amount of smoke. Crews | :08:39. | :08:49.
are working using an aerial appliance to make the structure safe | :08:50. | :08:50.
so that we can get inside the house. A Swindon man remains | :08:51. | :08:56.
in custody tonight after being charged with murdering | :08:57. | :08:57.
his wife in a crash on the L1. Tracy Walters suffered serious | :08:58. | :09:01.
injuries in the collision near Leicester in March and died | :09:02. | :09:04.
in hospital two days later. Ian Walters, who's 50 years old | :09:05. | :09:09.
has been remanded in custodx It's coming up. Welcome to the | :09:10. | :09:28.
programme. We've plenty still to come including a taste of World Cup | :09:29. | :09:40.
fever. And temperatures are set to rise over the next couple of days | :09:41. | :09:44.
will stop it possible Fridax will be the warmest day of the year so far. | :09:45. | :09:49.
There's concern that some schools in the West won't be ready in time to | :09:50. | :09:53.
provide free meals for all four`to seven`year`olds from September. | :09:54. | :09:57.
The government has given schools millions of pounds to changd | :09:58. | :10:00.
But head teachers are warning that it's not enough. | :10:01. | :10:06.
Clinton Rogers has been to a school in Somerset to find out | :10:07. | :10:09.
This head teacher will have serious problems implementing | :10:10. | :10:15.
This used to be the kitchen at Bishop Henderson Primary School | :10:16. | :10:26.
A growing school now, with 420 pupils, it needed `ll | :10:27. | :10:31.
Even if this school buys in meals from an outside supplier | :10:32. | :10:39.
it'll need to convert part of this hall to a server. | :10:40. | :10:42.
That'll cost ?16,000 ` money it doesn?t have. | :10:43. | :10:45.
From September, all schools will have to provide | :10:46. | :10:53.
The only way we could do th`t is to take it from education staffing | :10:54. | :11:04.
This is by no means the onlx school struggling. They reckon onlx one | :11:05. | :11:09.
third of primary schools in Somerset still have their own kitchens. The | :11:10. | :11:14.
county council is planning to build one big central kitchen. Thd | :11:15. | :11:18.
question is, will it be ready in time? From September all schools | :11:19. | :11:24.
will have to provide free mdals for impotence. Schools like this which | :11:25. | :11:31.
has its own kitchen will be better placed to supply those needs. | :11:32. | :11:44.
Nutritionists say from a health point of view | :11:45. | :11:46.
Not every school will have the survey `` the facilities to provide | :11:47. | :12:00.
hot meals. Some will providds sandwiches but they are not high up | :12:01. | :12:03.
enough on the nutritional v`lue scale. | :12:04. | :12:08.
But many schools are worried that what was promised free | :12:09. | :12:10.
by the government will end tp costing them money they don't have. | :12:11. | :12:26.
This was always going to be a big undertaking. Look at the sc`le of | :12:27. | :12:34.
it. 2700 schools need to get kitchen facilities either improve or | :12:35. | :12:47.
potting. `` or put in. In Bristol, they are saying 44 schools need new | :12:48. | :12:51.
equipment. There is also a political dimension to this will stop it was a | :12:52. | :12:58.
liberal Democrat idea and conservatives have said it lay not | :12:59. | :13:01.
be the best use of money at the time. Why do we think the government | :13:02. | :13:13.
is pushing ahead? There was a big pilot project done into are`s back | :13:14. | :13:24.
in 20 09 to 2011. The results suggested the performance of pupils | :13:25. | :13:29.
and their behaviour had improved. They think this can make a big | :13:30. | :13:32.
difference and the idea is to bring it into all primary schools across | :13:33. | :13:39.
the country. They would likd to roll it out to all children if they can | :13:40. | :13:47.
afford it. If it proves poptlar it will be a case of all partids | :13:48. | :13:51.
claiming credit. A former supermarket worker claims | :13:52. | :13:55.
he's been victimised and bullied after raising concerns about food | :13:56. | :13:58.
chillers that were switched The man, who's now left the Lidl | :13:59. | :14:01.
store in Hanham, was speaking at An employment tribunal has had | :14:02. | :14:18.
claims that the food chillers at this store where off for as long as | :14:19. | :14:26.
four hours on one of the hot just days in June of last year. The claim | :14:27. | :14:29.
is that some customers were coming back with food that had gond off. | :14:30. | :14:38.
The claims come from Matthew O'Donnell who has gone to the | :14:39. | :14:42.
employment tribunal claim that he was penalised for raising the | :14:43. | :14:49.
concerns. He was penalised for being a whistle`blower. He claims is ours | :14:50. | :14:53.
were reduced and he was har`ssed by managers. He says his store manager | :14:54. | :14:58.
had a one`to`one with him and said if he took it further he wotld face | :14:59. | :15:05.
the sack. Matthew claims he was bullied out of his job but during | :15:06. | :15:10.
the tribunal we've heard from Liddell 's lawyer who says that | :15:11. | :15:18.
Matthew has grossly misread Bentsen pack `` grossly misrepresented. | :15:19. | :15:27.
We will have to wait until darly September for the judge to lake up | :15:28. | :15:34.
his mind. As to whether or not the chillers were compromised, the store | :15:35. | :15:42.
has not made an official st`tement. One of the statement at the tribunal | :15:43. | :15:46.
said there was a potential for the chill chained to have broken down. | :15:47. | :15:53.
The cost of repairing one of the main commuter routes | :15:54. | :15:56.
between Bristol and Bath is set to cost ?1.5 million. | :15:57. | :15:59.
The A431 has been closed at Kelston since February due to a landslip. | :16:00. | :16:05.
Bath and North East Somerset Council still thinks it could be Christmas | :16:06. | :16:07.
Airbus has lost a major orddr for its new lightweight carbon | :16:08. | :16:14.
The aircraft first flew this time last year, and thousands of staff | :16:15. | :16:20.
at Filton designed the wings, fuel systems and landing ge`r. | :16:21. | :16:24.
Today the Dubai based Emirates airline cancelled an order for 0 of | :16:25. | :16:27.
Airbus says it's disappointdd, but still has orders | :16:28. | :16:34.
The Dymock Red, Hunt's Duke of Gloucester, Bromley | :16:35. | :16:42.
and Gilliflower of Gloucestdrshire, all good West Country apples. | :16:43. | :16:49.
But there are concerns that they could disappear | :16:50. | :16:51.
if young people don't take an interest in growing them. | :16:52. | :16:54.
Many of the skills involved in keeping orchards have bedn | :16:55. | :16:57.
passed down through generathons and the Gloucestershire Orchard | :16:58. | :17:00.
Trust is worried that once dxisting apple and pear producers retire | :17:01. | :17:05.
Here's our Gloucestershire reporter, Steve Knibbs. | :17:06. | :17:12.
Health and safety has obviotsly changed | :17:13. | :17:19.
and there are real concerns the skill involved in growing the apples | :17:20. | :17:22.
Here, those who are passion`te about orchards worry that | :17:23. | :17:25.
traditional methods ` and consequently rare apple | :17:26. | :17:27.
varieties ` handed down through generations could be lost forever. | :17:28. | :17:32.
a bit it may be skills that aren't taught in colleges. But thex are | :17:33. | :17:45.
real father to son, handed down knowledge. Once that is gond, | :17:46. | :17:50.
extinction is forever. Although commercial growing will | :17:51. | :17:52.
meet demand, the loss of the rarer orchards | :17:53. | :17:53.
impacts on smaller producers. The cider makers here in thd Forest | :17:54. | :17:56.
of Dean say they couldn't produce such a diverse range without | :17:57. | :17:59.
the unique varieties. Small orchard of related. They tend | :18:00. | :18:10.
to be good for diversity in terms of varieties. From the big comlercial | :18:11. | :18:19.
orchards we get the same varieties. They are also great for people | :18:20. | :18:24.
making some extra money in the autumn. | :18:25. | :18:30.
But if traditional orchard skills are dying with the older generation, | :18:31. | :18:33.
are the younger ones interested in taking it on? | :18:34. | :18:35.
These farming students at Hartpury College, schooled | :18:36. | :18:37.
in modern, high tech, agrictltural skills, still seem keen. | :18:38. | :18:39.
We've got orchards from all ages, from 60 years down to five xears | :18:40. | :18:51.
old. It's nice to see the old trees. There might be other ways of making | :18:52. | :18:56.
more money but I would look into it in order to keep the heritage alive. | :18:57. | :18:58.
The orchard skills centre is targeting schools | :18:59. | :19:00.
and young people with coursds teaching even the basics of how to | :19:01. | :19:03.
Hopefully breeding a new generation of grower and keeping a special part | :19:04. | :19:07.
South African international batsman Colin Ingram will join Somerset | :19:08. | :19:22.
He'll play for the county for five weeks during July and early August. | :19:23. | :19:28.
Ingram has played in 31 one`day international matches | :19:29. | :19:31.
He'll replace Alviro Petersdn at Somerset, who has been c`lled up | :19:32. | :19:36.
Football stickers used to bd the preserve of the school playground, | :19:37. | :19:43.
but now you're just as likely to find them in the workplace. | :19:44. | :19:47.
And with the World Cup kickhng off tomorrow, | :19:48. | :19:49.
collecting and swapping is reaching fever pitch across the West Country | :19:50. | :19:53.
John Maguire has been meeting grown men and women in Bristol desperate | :19:54. | :19:59.
We need to England players, two Nigerians. There is a familhar | :20:00. | :20:26.
mantra, dot, dot, need, need, it is the painstaking and expensive | :20:27. | :20:28.
process of building a World Cup sticker album. At this office, it is | :20:29. | :20:36.
not a matter of life and de`th, it is much more important than that. If | :20:37. | :20:43.
you find out that someone h`s a sticker you need, they are hn | :20:44. | :20:49.
demand. There is a guy in a cafe of the road who usually has a part of | :20:50. | :20:59.
the swapsies out on the corner. It got too political for me and I had | :21:00. | :21:09.
to give it to my boss. I haven't done this since 1986. You ndver end | :21:10. | :21:15.
quite know what you are going to get. That's a good player. Not bad. | :21:16. | :21:32.
Can I get an elusive card? Nope Not a bad effort. Only 635 to go. I | :21:33. | :21:46.
remember collecting the med`ls from 1966. | :21:47. | :21:48.
Well I'm joined now by Henrx Birtles from Wiltshire who's written | :21:49. | :21:53.
And as well as featuring many of us West Country folk, there's `lso a | :21:54. | :21:59.
few stars in there, including Hugh Grant, Liz Hurley and Damien Lewis. | :22:00. | :22:03.
We'll talk to Henry in just a moment but first let's take a look. | :22:04. | :22:23.
Will they interrupt the Samba and debug the ghost of more. Will we | :22:24. | :22:37.
hear three Lions roar. We'vd seen Liz Hurley, Damian Lewis. How hard | :22:38. | :22:45.
was it to convince them to get on board? It wasn't difficult. I am a | :22:46. | :22:57.
friend of Liz Hurley's. I w`s asked to write this and when I was on the | :22:58. | :23:01.
telephone to Liz, I said thhs is very exciting. I've written a sperm | :23:02. | :23:09.
and been asked to make a hole movie. She suggested why don't I do | :23:10. | :23:17.
a line? I'll get you to do ` line. Damian had read one of my poems at | :23:18. | :23:23.
West Mr Abbey in October, so I approached him through his | :23:24. | :23:29.
Tony Adams's Sun ghost to school with my son. I was very lucky. Going | :23:30. | :23:45.
across the country and gathdring the words, how do you gauge the mood of | :23:46. | :23:53.
England at the moment? I thhnk there is very much more of a realhstic | :23:54. | :23:56.
approach to this World Cup than there has been recently. I've had | :23:57. | :24:05.
dreadful world cups. I felt deeply saddened and let down at thd last | :24:06. | :24:09.
couple. I think we have all got used to it now and we are more rdalistic. | :24:10. | :24:15.
I reckon within a week or two if the games go our way we will believe we | :24:16. | :24:21.
are going to win again. You've obviously put a lot of hard work | :24:22. | :24:25.
into this. Where do you hopd it s going to be shown? It's been on BBC | :24:26. | :24:33.
world News. I've had a few loments on the radio. It has been on here. I | :24:34. | :24:41.
would love to see it on the main BBC World Cup show with Gary Lineker. | :24:42. | :24:54.
We'll see what we can do. Wd have to catch up with the weather now. | :24:55. | :25:10.
Beautiful conditions developing now. The scene at Minehead sums tp the | :25:11. | :25:15.
coastal districts through the course of tomorrow. A good deal of clear, | :25:16. | :25:19.
blue sky. It will be a pleasant day of light | :25:20. | :25:27.
winds and will mostly be warm. The temperatures are on the risd and | :25:28. | :25:34.
that will be come obvious bx Friday. High pressure is responsibld for | :25:35. | :25:35.
this settled spell. In terms of the forecast, it is a | :25:36. | :25:52.
persisting theme. For the rdst of this evening there will be cloud | :25:53. | :25:59.
bubbling up but we will losd that. We will end up with clear skies | :26:00. | :26:04.
through the course of tonight. Light winds. It will be a comparatively | :26:05. | :26:13.
cool or chilly night. Some districts will get down to six Celsius. Most | :26:14. | :26:19.
urban areas will be around dight or nine Celsius. As you go across into | :26:20. | :26:30.
Devon we will see patches of cloud. Tomorrow, strong sunshine and as the | :26:31. | :26:35.
day wears on we will see a little bit more cloud. Many Western and | :26:36. | :26:41.
Northern areas will remain cloud free. The winds will be light. The | :26:42. | :26:47.
pollen count will be through the roof. UV levels will be equ`lly | :26:48. | :26:56.
high. We saw 18 to 20 Celsits today will stop we will beat that | :26:57. | :27:03.
tomorrow. 23 Celsius should be on the cards. It's odds`on to be the | :27:04. | :27:07.
warmest day of the year so far. There is the outside chance of a | :27:08. | :27:19.
shower in the east of our dhstrict but it low chance. Maybe a spot of | :27:20. | :27:23.
rain on Saturday. Enjoy the weekend. The winter feels a long way away. | :27:24. | :27:37.
We'll be back with an updatd at 10pm. Otherwise we will see you | :27:38. | :27:43.
tomorrow. I for now. | :27:44. | :27:47. |
