Welcome to BBC Points West with Alex Lovell and Sabet Choudhury Our | :00:00. | :00:00.
main story tonight ` in the footsteps of her predecessor. | :00:00. | :00:09.
The new environment secretary comes to see the continuing work to | :00:10. | :00:12.
protect people living on the Somerset levels from flooding. | :00:13. | :00:20.
The reason I am in Somerset within ten days of my appointment is it is | :00:21. | :00:27.
a real priority to make sure the area is properly protected against | :00:28. | :00:30.
flooding and to make sure we are putting in place the action plan and | :00:31. | :00:37.
that it is happening. The visit has been welcomed by many but some are | :00:38. | :00:41.
clearly still affected by the flooding and they feel disappointed | :00:42. | :00:42.
not to have met her. Also tonight after | :00:43. | :00:49.
the disappointment the questions. How did a Wiltshire coach company | :00:50. | :00:52.
which has traded The dolphin which has drifted | :00:53. | :00:55.
off course and found itself The west athletes trying to build | :00:56. | :01:02.
on a successful weekend The new Environment Secretary has | :01:03. | :01:11.
been in Somerset today, on her first visit to the area which was | :01:12. | :01:20.
devastated by the winter's floods. Ten days | :01:21. | :01:24.
after taking up her new position, Elisabeth Truss went to Burrowbridge | :01:25. | :01:28.
to see firsthand the dredging But some people who were badly | :01:29. | :01:30.
affected by the floods say they're deeply disappointed not to meet | :01:31. | :01:36.
the minister in person to talk Yes, this home six months on from | :01:37. | :01:56.
when water hit and the residents were living here but as you can see | :01:57. | :02:01.
it is still in pieces, completely needs to be gutted. This was the | :02:02. | :02:06.
office, that was the hall and this was the dining room stepping over | :02:07. | :02:11.
breaks, it is dirty, rotten timbers, this is very upsetting for the | :02:12. | :02:15.
family who were desperate to get back in. They will not return now | :02:16. | :02:21.
until Christmas. Today, the new Environment Secretary came to | :02:22. | :02:25.
Somerset to see what was going on, to hopefully present this happening | :02:26. | :02:27.
again. Monday morning and day 10 | :02:28. | :02:29.
in the post and the new environment minister | :02:30. | :02:31.
Elisabeth Truss is deep in Somerset Seeing her herself | :02:32. | :02:34.
the dredging developments. After all it is costing her | :02:35. | :02:38.
government over five million pounds. The reason I am in Somerset within | :02:39. | :02:51.
ten days of my appointment is I see it as a priority to make sure the | :02:52. | :02:55.
area is protected against flooding and to make sure we are putting in | :02:56. | :02:59.
place our action plan and that the action plan is happening. I am | :03:00. | :03:03.
delighted to see the dredging taking place, the dredging is on schedule, | :03:04. | :03:09.
that is important for local businesses, local residents. The | :03:10. | :03:15.
dredging is on track, it is perfectly to time. They have been | :03:16. | :03:29.
doing it for four months. Owen Paterson was looking at the | :03:30. | :03:33.
possibility of a barrage outside Bridgwater which could cost ?30 | :03:34. | :03:37.
million. Today, the new secretary said she would not be drawn on this. | :03:38. | :03:42.
Of course, we look at further proposals by the government has | :03:43. | :03:46.
shown its commitment by putting the funding in. | :03:47. | :03:48.
The secretary was then whisked off for talks with the | :03:49. | :03:51.
But some prominent farmers were disappointed not to meet her. | :03:52. | :03:58.
We built up a good relationship with Owen Paterson. He asked our opinion | :03:59. | :04:07.
and we are very disappointed and we will have two work hard to build | :04:08. | :04:12.
that relationship with a new Secretary of State. I am pleased she | :04:13. | :04:16.
came to see what is going on and how it is going. Ten days into the job | :04:17. | :04:22.
and she is showing an interest which is good. | :04:23. | :04:25.
The message though from Whitehall is there'll be no | :04:26. | :04:27.
change in policy ` the only change lies with the politician. | :04:28. | :04:35.
Coming into the kitchen on higher ground and the builders have been | :04:36. | :04:41.
here today doing a lot. What is it like being back here? Honestly it is | :04:42. | :04:48.
like wading through treacle and living hell. What we have been | :04:49. | :04:55.
through and experienced, we do not wish on your worst enemy. It is an | :04:56. | :04:59.
absolute nightmare. Tell us about your son. Yes, he is seven years old | :05:00. | :05:07.
but last night he was suffering with the heat, did not feel well and | :05:08. | :05:12.
asked if we could go home. We all want to go home but it is an | :05:13. | :05:20.
absolute state. How did you feel that the Environment Secretary came | :05:21. | :05:26.
here, ten days into her job. We are really pleased. Ten days in and she | :05:27. | :05:31.
is here all ready, fantastic news. She is taking it seriously. But | :05:32. | :05:36.
there is a lot of bits missing like meeting the locals and the people | :05:37. | :05:40.
who have been heavily involved as I have, we have not seen her today but | :05:41. | :05:46.
hopefully she will come down and next time she can come for a cup of | :05:47. | :05:56.
tea at the building site. People are delighted she came but disappointed | :05:57. | :06:00.
she did not see them. She promises to come back soon and next time | :06:01. | :06:03.
hopefully she will see the real people who are still being affected. | :06:04. | :06:07.
Wiltshire Police are renewing an appeal for witnesses following | :06:08. | :06:09.
It happened in the early hours of yesterday morning when a silver | :06:10. | :06:14.
The driver and two passengers died at the scene. | :06:15. | :06:19.
A driver involved in an accident which killed | :06:20. | :06:23.
a three year old boy in Bristol is to be prosecuted for manslaughter. | :06:24. | :06:27.
Freddie Hussey died in a collision in Bedminster back in January. | :06:28. | :06:32.
Following a police investigation 37 year old Tony Davies from Hallen has | :06:33. | :06:35.
been summonsed to appear before magistrates when he will be | :06:36. | :06:39.
charged with manslaughter and causing death by dangerous driving. | :06:40. | :06:45.
The Wiltshire charity Help for Heroes has condemned | :06:46. | :06:47.
a man who admitted stealing ?300,000 from them. | :06:48. | :06:51.
Christopher Copeland employed teams of collectors at supermarkets and | :06:52. | :06:55.
He told his helpers he was passing on the money to Help for Heroes | :06:56. | :07:00.
but instead put it straight into his own bank account. | :07:01. | :07:03.
Speaking outside court, Copeland said he would spend the rest of his | :07:04. | :07:06.
The public will look at you and think this is utter nonsense. | :07:07. | :07:23.
There's been something of a gold rush for West Country | :07:24. | :07:39.
Since Friday night our competitors have won an amazing five golds. | :07:40. | :07:47.
The weekend brought the best out of our competitors didn't it. | :07:48. | :07:56.
And it means the medal tally stands like this. | :07:57. | :08:06.
That flurry of golds began Friday evening when Bath`based Megan | :08:07. | :08:11.
Fletcher won her Judo final in the under`70 kilo category. | :08:12. | :08:15.
Just a couple of hours later the University of | :08:16. | :08:19.
Bath swimmer Chris Walker`Hebborn won the 100 metres backstroke title | :08:20. | :08:21.
On Saturday, Gloucestershire's Vicky Holland was part of the gold`medal | :08:22. | :08:26.
And Bristol shooter David Luckman also finished top of the podium | :08:27. | :08:31.
Yesterday, Bitton's Siobhan`Marie O'Connor finished | :08:32. | :08:37.
off a fantastic weekend with gold in the 200 metres individual medley | :08:38. | :08:40.
That is the sort of feeling which we trained so hard to have | :08:41. | :08:50.
It makes everything worth it, the sacrifices and stuff. | :08:51. | :09:00.
It is one of the best moments of my life! | :09:01. | :09:05.
Well Megan Fletcher's Judo gold was extra special after her brother was | :09:06. | :09:08.
ruled out of the games with a knee injury just a fortnight ago. | :09:09. | :09:13.
I spoke with her earlier today to see if her sucess has sunk in yet. | :09:14. | :09:18.
I've had a couple of days but I cannot believe it has happened. | :09:19. | :09:25.
It would be nice to have a Commonwealth gold medal | :09:26. | :09:31.
I expected to see you wearing it, where is it? | :09:32. | :09:36.
I wasn't sure whether to put it on or not but here it is. | :09:37. | :09:44.
No, it has been tucked away in my bedroom most of the time. | :09:45. | :09:52.
Some people have taken them out on nights out but there is no way | :09:53. | :09:57.
no way I am losing this because I would lose it on a night out. | :09:58. | :10:01.
We hoped both yourself and your brother would be competing | :10:02. | :10:05.
in the games, it was disappointeing he pulled out with a week to go. | :10:06. | :10:10.
What is his reaction to your success? | :10:11. | :10:14.
After I won the semifinal he gave me a massive | :10:15. | :10:20.
hug and he was teary and he said to me that day was so amazing for him | :10:21. | :10:25.
even after his disappointment, I am glad I could make him happy | :10:26. | :10:28.
He has been a massive support even after his disappointment. | :10:29. | :10:37.
Ali will be back with a look ahead to the rest | :10:38. | :10:47.
of the day's action at the Commonwealth Games a little later. | :10:48. | :10:55.
Thanks very much for joining us on this Monday evening. | :10:56. | :10:58.
We still have plenty more to come, including... | :10:59. | :11:00.
The diggers are going in at the start of a major redevelopment | :11:01. | :11:03.
Investigations are continuing into the collapse of the Wiltshire | :11:04. | :11:14.
The company, which was based in Chippenham, collapsed after | :11:15. | :11:20.
It's thrown many holiday makers' plans into doubt, but as | :11:21. | :11:27.
our Wiltshire reporter Will Glennon explains ` there was some good news | :11:28. | :11:30.
They came back to their base today, possibly for the last time after 86 | :11:31. | :11:44.
years in business, the company bosses called in administrators | :11:45. | :11:49.
saying they had run out of money. It is easy to say but that is the | :11:50. | :11:55.
problem. It has run out of cash. We got involved a week ago today and | :11:56. | :11:59.
have been working hard to see if there was a solution but there | :12:00. | :12:03.
isn't. I guess it was too late in the day and we have no option than | :12:04. | :12:09.
to close the business. All 89 employees were caused to a meeting | :12:10. | :12:12.
at lunch time to be told they were losing their jobs. It is one of | :12:13. | :12:17.
those things that happen in life and you have to get on with it. We have | :12:18. | :12:25.
all finished now. They run blush `` bus services and school transport. | :12:26. | :12:31.
It also ran a day trip and holiday business, a thousand customers will | :12:32. | :12:36.
now be left at home. Michael has retired. He has been looking forward | :12:37. | :12:42.
to four days in Weymouth for his wife?s birthday. It cost over ?350. | :12:43. | :12:52.
He doesn't know what will happen to his money. Gutted, disgusted and I | :12:53. | :12:58.
cannot say it on camera. It is depressing, stressful, the wife is | :12:59. | :13:06.
upset. We need it at this time. It is her birthday on Monday. It has | :13:07. | :13:13.
been ruined. People all over Wiltshire are affected. We have | :13:14. | :13:20.
lived here for about six or seven years and we have always gone on day | :13:21. | :13:32.
trips with them. It does affect us. Other day trips are from Trowbridge | :13:33. | :13:35.
so it will affect us. We like the day trips. The holiday business has | :13:36. | :13:42.
now stopped trading. With a company not affiliated to travel | :13:43. | :13:44.
Association, customers are being told to contact their bank or credit | :13:45. | :13:51.
card company to find out if they will get a refund. For this coach | :13:52. | :13:54.
company, it is the end of road. The force's police | :13:55. | :14:06.
and crime commissioner says it will save money, but it's being claimed | :14:07. | :14:09.
it could also lead to fewer officers This report by our Home Affairs | :14:10. | :14:12.
Correspondent, Steve Brodie. This state of | :14:13. | :14:17.
the art custody centre at Keynsham may look like something out of Star | :14:18. | :14:21.
Trek but is has 48 cells, digital Over | :14:22. | :14:26.
a thousand police officers and staff will work at the three centres which | :14:27. | :14:30.
crime commissioner Sue Mountstevens What we have done is by coming into | :14:31. | :14:49.
larger buildings we can be more efficient on processes such as | :14:50. | :14:53.
dealing with detainees for custody and it means now officers can get | :14:54. | :15:01.
back on the streets quicker. The older places, the bureaucracy and | :15:02. | :15:04.
waiting times would take an officer off the street for a few hours. That | :15:05. | :15:08.
will not happen here. It's 10.8 miles | :15:09. | :15:30.
from Bristol city centre via the M32 At 12 noon today the journey | :15:31. | :15:32.
time takes around 49 minutes. The journey from Bristol to Keynsham | :15:33. | :15:39.
is 5.7 miles From Minehead to | :15:40. | :15:44.
the Bridgwater centre is 26.7 miles But the force argues | :15:45. | :15:49.
the new structure is a step Once detainees are here they will be | :15:50. | :16:08.
`` there will be a team of staff dealing with them and releasing the | :16:09. | :16:14.
arresting officers backed their street duties. That is more | :16:15. | :16:20.
efficient and effective in dealing with detainees and we are conscious | :16:21. | :16:24.
we want officers on the street back in their community and | :16:25. | :16:25.
neighbourhood. Marine experts have told Points West | :16:26. | :16:34.
it's now highly likely a dolphin spotted in the River Severn will | :16:35. | :16:37.
make it's own way back to safety. The dolphin, which made it's way up | :16:38. | :16:40.
from the estuary, has been seen around Stonebench | :16:41. | :16:43.
and Elmore during the past week. Here's our Gloucestershire reporter, | :16:44. | :16:45.
Steve Knibbs. Filmed on Saturday morning ` | :16:46. | :16:47.
a bottlenosed dolphin in the At just 2`3 metres long it's still | :16:48. | :16:49.
a youngster ` and although it's common to see such species | :16:50. | :16:55.
in the estuary ` seeing them this Nellie, as its been nicknamed | :16:56. | :16:58.
by some, took advantage of the high tides to get here to | :16:59. | :17:03.
look for food ` picking off some Alexandra, who filmed the dolphin at | :17:04. | :17:07.
the weekend said that, thankfully, A bit covered in silt | :17:08. | :17:14.
but that is to be expected. Seemed good to say the least | :17:15. | :17:20.
which was relieving for us because This isn't the first time that | :17:21. | :17:28.
unexpected species have paid a visit ` last year Keith the Seal, who | :17:29. | :17:35.
turned out to be a girl, was spotted In 2012 this whale lost it's life | :17:36. | :17:39.
after becoming stranded on the river bank ` despite a huge | :17:40. | :17:46.
effort by rescue teams to save it. But as for our dolphin ` | :17:47. | :17:51.
experts are sure it can make it back home after coming to Gloucestershire | :17:52. | :17:54.
for a feed. It gains food by sonar, it | :17:55. | :17:57.
follows fish by sonar, not sight. It more less knows where is, it | :17:58. | :18:03.
knows it is confined from the sonar. The public have been asked not to | :18:04. | :18:14.
make a huge fuss if they see the dolphin to avoid causing it too | :18:15. | :18:21.
much stress but there have been no reported sightings since Saturday ` | :18:22. | :18:24.
the hope is that it's used the high tide to negotiate the notorious | :18:25. | :18:27.
mudbanks south of here and back A major demolition project | :18:28. | :18:30.
at the home of Bristol City Football The historic Wedlock Stand is coming | :18:31. | :18:41.
down as part of a forty five million pound | :18:42. | :18:45.
rebuild of the Ashton Gate Stadium. Over the next two years | :18:46. | :18:48.
the stadium will be expanded to This is significant for the club | :18:49. | :18:53.
and the fans who have spent many years quite happily watching games | :18:54. | :19:02.
from the East stand. We have been careful with the design | :19:03. | :19:05.
to make sure a lot of noise stays in the stadium so filling | :19:06. | :19:09.
in the corners and building the roof The objective is to create | :19:10. | :19:12.
a fantastic atmosphere for rugby So after all those medals | :19:13. | :19:17.
at the weekend what are the prospects of more success | :19:18. | :19:23.
tonight at the Commonwealth Games? Ali is back with us ` | :19:24. | :19:29.
what's been happening today? Well, we came close to a medal | :19:30. | :19:34.
in the shooting. Kristian Callaghan, | :19:35. | :19:36.
an engineering student at the University of Bath has been | :19:37. | :19:38.
competing in the 50 metres pistol. After qualifying for the final | :19:39. | :19:42.
in second place, he couldn't recreate the same form, | :19:43. | :19:45.
and finished in fifth place. But as you can see he still | :19:46. | :19:49.
thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Bath sprinter Sophie Papps | :19:50. | :19:52.
in the red shorts is another who's having a great time ` | :19:53. | :19:56.
this is her 100 metres heat from earlier today ` she finished | :19:57. | :19:59.
in third and is through to the I only got told I was running | :20:00. | :20:02.
on Thursday. I have been thrown | :20:03. | :20:11.
in the deep end but I am excited and I am having such a good time | :20:12. | :20:14.
and Glasgow is so nice. Tonight Swindon swimmer Jaz Carlin | :20:15. | :20:29.
will be going for gold in the final The 23`year`old broke | :20:30. | :20:35.
the games record in her heat winning the world and goes into the race in | :20:36. | :20:41.
the next hour as one of the She's ranked number 2 | :20:42. | :20:44.
in the world and goes into the race in the next hour | :20:45. | :20:46.
as one of the favourites for gold. I have been waiting around for a | :20:47. | :20:50.
couple of days to swim a main event. I've been training hard, | :20:51. | :20:53.
I put in all the effort this year. It is about staying calm | :20:54. | :20:56.
and relaxed for the final. I loved finishing | :20:57. | :21:00.
and the crowd are amazing. Two Bristol weightlifters | :21:01. | :21:06.
begin their Commonwealth Bradley Burrowes and Sonny Webster | :21:07. | :21:08.
both train at the Empire gym There's a 15 year age gap | :21:09. | :21:13.
between the pair, but they're the best of friends | :21:14. | :21:17.
as well as training partners. They're at opposite ends | :21:18. | :21:53.
of their careers but have been After three years | :21:54. | :21:56.
of training together, there is We knew we had to do it together, it | :21:57. | :21:59.
was not be one or the other going, We have such a great friendship | :22:00. | :22:04.
and we could not see ourselves He gives me stick | :22:05. | :22:09.
when I am training. I am in pain | :22:10. | :22:12.
but we have never fallen out. Their lives are very different, the | :22:13. | :22:15.
father of two Bradley has a family. He has taken unpaid leave from | :22:16. | :22:21.
his job to prepare for the games. His father was a Commonwealth | :22:22. | :22:30.
gold medallist back in 1982. Brad was a gymnast as a child | :22:31. | :22:34.
and quite late following I did not really know anything | :22:35. | :22:37.
about my dad?s career until when I I knew how well he had done | :22:38. | :22:45.
and what I had to live up to. I have to go to the | :22:46. | :22:53.
Commonwealth Games to live up to Sonny narrowly missed out on | :22:54. | :22:56.
competing at the Olympics, he has made sure everything has been right | :22:57. | :23:03.
this time, It is one | :23:04. | :23:05.
of the most important things, For me, I have to ensure I am | :23:06. | :23:10.
sitting around that weight whilst building muscle so it is super | :23:11. | :23:19.
important. So, how do they rate | :23:20. | :23:25.
each Brad has a bigger chance than he | :23:26. | :23:26.
believes and I am sure if he lifts to his ability and hard work he has | :23:27. | :23:37.
put in will come off for him and I Brad will be | :23:38. | :23:42.
the first to compete tonight. Half past seven on the red button | :23:43. | :23:50.
if you want to watch Bradley this Or there's | :23:51. | :23:59.
the artistic gymnastics which is underway featuring Ruby Harrold from | :24:00. | :24:02.
Lower Langford in North Somerset The gymnastics! Your explanation of | :24:03. | :24:25.
the gymnastics was very physical. You missed out. It was like | :24:26. | :24:27.
Morecambe and Wise. Thank you. Before we go congratulations to | :24:28. | :24:35.
Bath Olympian Amy Williams.The 31`year`old gold medallist | :24:36. | :24:37.
has announced she is It follows what one glossy magazine | :24:38. | :24:39.
has called a "whirlwind romance" Still dry conditions here in | :24:40. | :25:09.
Bristol. We are on the periphery between some showers in the east, | :25:10. | :25:13.
the skies are looking quite threatening. Further west, clearer | :25:14. | :25:22.
skies. Tomorrow, the skies will be much more in a widespread moat `` | :25:23. | :25:28.
note. A warm day, generally a good deal of sunshine around. There are | :25:29. | :25:35.
some caveats. You may have seen there has been some horrendous | :25:36. | :25:39.
weather across London and the south`east. The western extreme of | :25:40. | :25:46.
that system has brought cloud showers into Wiltshire. That is | :25:47. | :25:51.
drifting towards the south`east but into tomorrow a good deal of | :25:52. | :25:56.
sunshine lasting into the afternoon. A weather front is quite weak | :25:57. | :26:01.
introducing more cloud but nothing in the way of rain. Returning to | :26:02. | :26:08.
this evening, still 12 showers to cater for in Wiltshire and they may | :26:09. | :26:12.
be further west but a dying breed as the weather goes on. A fair amount | :26:13. | :26:21.
of cloud around towards the east of the M5 corridor. Through daybreak | :26:22. | :26:25.
tomorrow, pretty much in the same boat temperature`wise, 14 or 15 | :26:26. | :26:33.
Celsius. Any of the cloud towards the East getting eaten away, a good | :26:34. | :26:38.
deal of sunshine developing through the morning and early part of the | :26:39. | :26:41.
afternoon. The UV levels will be high. Cloud increasing, a weather | :26:42. | :26:46.
front coming across us all, the cloud will break up again into the | :26:47. | :26:51.
evening. Temperatures tomorrow should get to similar temperatures, | :26:52. | :26:55.
23, 24. I would not be surprised if one or two spots get higher than | :26:56. | :27:01.
that, maybe 25 or 76. This is a taster, we are getting confident | :27:02. | :27:06.
there will be low pressure dominating from Friday so the chance | :27:07. | :27:11.
of showers around but equally some fairly prolonged dry and bright | :27:12. | :27:14.
spells. The temperatures getting down to about average for the time | :27:15. | :27:20.
of year, low 20s. Thank you very much. The sky looked really | :27:21. | :27:27.
dramatic. It will come down later. Apologies to those who noticed | :27:28. | :27:30.
technical problems earlier. We were going to bring you a report on the | :27:31. | :27:34.
latest travel company problems tonight. Also on BBC fortnight, a | :27:35. | :27:43.
programme from Bristol looking at the history of extreme weather in | :27:44. | :27:45.
Britain. Good night I leave the ashram, travel halfway | :27:46. | :27:58.
across the world to find my father, Oh, well. As Vashrati says, | :27:59. | :28:04.
gotta keep smiling! | :28:05. | :28:08. |
