Three men remain under arrest tonight as part | :00:12. | :00:14.
of a major investigation into a scam which has seen 300 | :00:15. | :00:17.
elderly victims in the region duped out of their life savings. | :00:18. | :00:20.
The so called courier fraud originated in the South West, | :00:21. | :00:22.
and all the region's police forces have spent the past three months | :00:23. | :00:25.
Here's our Home Affair Correspondent, Steve Brodie. | :00:26. | :00:33.
Officers are joined by uniformed members of the | :00:34. | :00:40.
Three men suspected of being part of a courier fraud scam are | :00:41. | :00:46.
Of the 300 plus victims of courier fraud, many are over 60 | :00:47. | :00:52.
and often are left confused, frightened and feeling vulnerable. | :00:53. | :00:58.
The gang have a number of different scams they use to pray | :00:59. | :01:00.
Some of them say there is a problem with a corrupt banking employee who | :01:01. | :01:07.
is accessing their account, and the only way to protect the money is | :01:08. | :01:10.
to withdraw it all and send it up somewhere to a bank headquarters. | :01:11. | :01:13.
They then send round a taxi with a courier to pick the money up | :01:14. | :01:17.
from the victim, then take it unknowingly to the offender. | :01:18. | :01:22.
Susan's frail 89`year`old father was first phoned up | :01:23. | :01:24.
When he said he didn't have any debts, they changed their story. | :01:25. | :01:34.
They said they had looked into this matter and discovered that | :01:35. | :01:37.
money had been moved out of my father?s bank account | :01:38. | :01:41.
If he could just give them his bank details, they would make sure that | :01:42. | :01:47.
They asked him several times for his bank details, | :01:48. | :01:54.
Credible institutions just don't say there are going to send round | :01:55. | :02:00.
They don't ask you to do things over the phone, which are really | :02:01. | :02:04.
illogical and which are required you to react immediately. | :02:05. | :02:09.
I think the key thing is to make sure that you are dealing with | :02:10. | :02:12.
Many victims of the courier crimes are too | :02:13. | :02:16.
embarrassed to come back forward and admit they have been conned. | :02:17. | :02:20.
Police say they have nothing to be ashamed about as the fraudsters | :02:21. | :02:23.
There are warning signs the public should be aware of. | :02:24. | :02:30.
This evening, the arrested men are being | :02:31. | :02:34.

registration from Ofsted from the 16th of August, that is | :03:09. | :03:12.
It says the purpose of the suspension is to allow time | :03:13. | :03:22.
to investigate a belief that a child might be exposed to | :03:23. | :03:27.
the risk of harm and for any necessary steps to be taken | :03:28. | :03:31.
It says the situation will be reviewed regularly | :03:32. | :03:37.

Police have not said any more about the detail of | :03:50. | :03:52.
the investigation and nothing about the nature of the allegations. | :03:53. | :03:57.

Tonnes of waste have started to be removed | :04:24. | :04:48.
from a Swindon recycling site that's been on fire for almost a month. | :04:49. | :04:51.
The rubbish is being taken from Averies Recycling in Marshgate | :04:52. | :04:53.
to a landfill site in Blunsdon to allow fire fighters more space to | :04:54. | :04:56.
The Environment Agency is overseeing the operation after | :04:57. | :05:02.

Right Reverend Peter Maurice has published a report showing how | :05:40. | :05:43.
the diocese could respond more quickly and effectively in future. | :05:44. | :05:47.
It includes a number of recommendations such | :05:48. | :05:49.
as supporting dredging, which have been welcomed by local residents. | :05:50. | :05:56.
Because it's an apolitical organisation, | :05:57. | :05:57.
it has a role to play that strikes across all party boundaries, | :05:58. | :06:01.
so it's not governmental but they still have a voice in government. | :06:02. | :06:04.
Because they can use their influence in the House | :06:05. | :06:08.
of Lords, he might be able to get things done for us that we | :06:09. | :06:11.
We can put our hands up and say, excuse me, | :06:12. | :06:17.
but if the Archbishop of somewhere says that he gets taken notice of. | :06:18. | :06:20.
But for now I'll leave you with Ian who has the latest forecast. | :06:21. | :06:34.
Good evening. You will find tomorrow much like today. Some bright and | :06:35. | :06:43.
sunny spells but some showers as well. Those showers could be fairly | :06:44. | :06:47.
heavy in places. A cool night compared to what it should be at | :06:48. | :06:53.
this time of year. We could get as low as seven Celsius. Probably about | :06:54. | :07:00.
nine or ten in the city. A chilly start tomorrow but a good deal of | :07:01. | :07:05.
dry weather. One to showers starting to show in the West. Not everywhere | :07:06. | :07:14.
is seeing the heavier showers. Some areas will remain dry through the | :07:15. | :07:17.
course of the day. A moderately breezy day. Temperatures up to 16 | :07:18. | :07:26.
degrees Celsius. It could be the first day since the 4th of June that | :07:27. | :07:29.
nowhere in southern England has reached the 20s. Here's a look at | :07:30. | :07:32.
your national forecast. and Thursday as well. A bit of rain | :07:33. | :07:35.
around on Friday. And with more on all of that, of course, here is | :07:36. | :07:38.
Alex. Good evening. There's no sign of | :07:39. | :07:44.
things warming up any time soon. It will stay on the fresh side, despite | :07:45. | :07:48.
there being some decent spells of August sunshine. A sprinkling of | :07:49. | :07:54.
showers. Always on the cool day, by day and particularly by night. Why | :07:55. | :08:00.
is it so chilly? We are stuck between an area of high and an area | :08:01. | :08:06.
of high pressure over Scandinavia. The winds swirl around the low. We | :08:07. | :08:10.
have northerly winds, bringing this chilly air and this cold pool is set | :08:11. | :08:15.
to sit across the UK for the rest of this working week. With the winds | :08:16. | :08:18.
coming from the north, it means northern Scotland will continue with | :08:19. | :08:22.
showers. The showers are fading in the east. More | :08:23. | :08:23. |
