again. Something to look forward to. That is all from the | :00:00. | :00:10.
900 badgers are to be shot hn Gloucestershire and Somerset. | :00:11. | :00:27.
With TB at record highs, we ask if the policy can work. | :00:28. | :00:39.
Our other headlines tonight: bringing in the big guns ` | :00:40. | :00:41.
the emergercy services dousd the Wiltshire rubbish fire | :00:42. | :00:43.
The boys are in the money: @ Banksy on the side of a youth club | :00:44. | :00:52.
And send in the clowns ` we go inside the Big Tent | :00:53. | :00:56.
A second cull of badgers in Gloucestershire and Somerset has | :00:57. | :01:09.
been given the go ahead and could get underway within the next few | :01:10. | :01:16.
weeks. The Government's pushing ahead with the second part of its | :01:17. | :01:18.
trial in the two pilot areas, despite the fact that both culls | :01:19. | :01:21.
last year failed to reach their targets. Our reporter Steve Knibbs | :01:22. | :01:24.
is within the cull zone in Gloucestershire for us tonight. | :01:25. | :01:30.
Thank you. This is the focus of the badger cull activity in | :01:31. | :01:43.
Gloucestershire. Within the next few weeks, natural England have issued | :01:44. | :01:51.
licensing. They have set minimum targets. 615 in Gloucestershire and | :01:52. | :02:07.
three 1116 badgers. In 2013, 92 were shot. And 940 were shot in | :02:08. | :02:15.
Somerset. Campaigners and police and Natural England have had tile to | :02:16. | :02:18.
reflect and take stock. Thex are ready for another round of this | :02:19. | :02:24.
controversial cull. With thd pilot cull about to start again, ht is a | :02:25. | :02:29.
nervous time for all involvdd. The criticism from in independent | :02:30. | :02:32.
report, that the operation was not effective assuming, the company | :02:33. | :02:36.
running the cull in Gloucester says lessons have been learned. The | :02:37. | :02:42.
report was critical and we `ccept that. It did, however, say that | :02:43. | :02:52.
these methods could be used safely. There were other issues thex have | :02:53. | :02:55.
raised. We have addressed them through extra training with the | :02:56. | :03:02.
shooting teams. Also getting ready for the cull are campaigners. This | :03:03. | :03:08.
group in Gloucester claims they have 1000 members ready to patrol the | :03:09. | :03:11.
cull zone. They are more prdpared than ever. We have more equhpment | :03:12. | :03:18.
this year. We will be able to see where the animals go. We will be | :03:19. | :03:26.
able to watch them and then cage them and get medical treatmdnt for | :03:27. | :03:33.
them. Bovine TB is showing no sign of going away. In Wiltshire it has | :03:34. | :03:40.
hit a record high. This man is under restrictions again. I would like to | :03:41. | :03:50.
see an all`out attack on bovine TB from all sides. From people against | :03:51. | :03:58.
culling badgers. From the Government and from the veterinary recdssion. | :03:59. | :04:09.
Just as cancer is being tre`ted Planning is under way on all sides | :04:10. | :04:14.
ahead of the pilot cull. Gloucestershire Constabularx said | :04:15. | :04:16.
they are putting public safdty at the heart of this operation this | :04:17. | :04:20.
year. Contract was implied to shoot badgers are prepared to work the | :04:21. | :04:24.
same land as campaigners who do not want a single shot fired. | :04:25. | :04:27.
We're joined from Westminstdr by Dominic Dyer from the Badger Trust | :04:28. | :04:30.
Good evening. Why not get bdhind this badger cull, this time and see | :04:31. | :04:43.
if it works? It was a disastrous failure in 2013. It cost only pounds | :04:44. | :04:47.
and we did not kill enough badgers. It probably led to the spre`d of the | :04:48. | :04:52.
disease and it was inhumane. It took badgers 1050 minutes to die. That is | :04:53. | :04:58.
not acceptable. We're talking about bovine TB which is the biggdst | :04:59. | :05:02.
animal problem in this country. It causes massive suffering. Is it not | :05:03. | :05:06.
at least worth trying? , yot can get on top of TB. There are othdr | :05:07. | :05:14.
methods being used in Wales. That's a nation of cattle. And vaccination | :05:15. | :05:21.
of badgers. Those methods are being used in England as well. TB is down | :05:22. | :05:28.
by 14% in Wales but even thd people they admit it is a long`terl | :05:29. | :05:35.
problem. Well we are having a conference on this subject `nd the | :05:36. | :05:40.
people in Wales are sounding very upbeat about what they have | :05:41. | :05:44.
achieved. It is cost`effecthve. Do you accept that in England the | :05:45. | :05:48.
Government is also trying a broad range of measures and this hs just | :05:49. | :05:52.
in the very worst areas that they are trying to get on top of this | :05:53. | :05:56.
dreadful problem to stop anhmal suffering? I have a serious concern | :05:57. | :06:01.
about the safety of the cull. We have heard stories in the Stnday | :06:02. | :06:07.
Times about shots being madd near residential homes. Police are | :06:08. | :06:13.
looking at that as a crimin`l investigation. We are asking why | :06:14. | :06:21.
more has not been done earlher. These are serious health concerns. | :06:22. | :06:26.
People could get hard in thhs cull. Thank you for joining us. `` | :06:27. | :06:29.
injured. Fifteen firefighters have spent the | :06:30. | :06:31.
entire day trying to extingtish the fire at a waste plant in Swhndon | :06:32. | :06:34.
which has been burning for just over five weeks. Today they intensified | :06:35. | :06:38.
their work by dousing the flames with thousands of litres of water | :06:39. | :06:41.
every minute. Here's Tracey Miller. Tons of highly compacted rubbish | :06:42. | :06:44.
have been burning now for 38 days. Firefighters have struggled to get | :06:45. | :06:47.
the fire under control whild it s spewed acrid smoke into the air But | :06:48. | :06:51.
from today the Wiltshire fire and rescue service say they're taking a | :06:52. | :06:56.
much more aggressive approach. Why have you not taking this stance | :06:57. | :07:09.
from the beginning? We had to remove over 1000 tonnes of waste that was | :07:10. | :07:14.
not involved in the fire to actually access the area. We have pl`ns in | :07:15. | :07:19.
place to protect the environment. We want to ensure none of the water | :07:20. | :07:21.
runs into the river. The increased efforts to put the | :07:22. | :07:24.
fire out have meant even more smoke. This is as close as we can get | :07:25. | :07:36.
because the owners have reftsed us access. But we can see the fire | :07:37. | :07:40.
because the rubbish is piled as high as a house. We have lots of small | :07:41. | :07:46.
businesses struggling to carry on and work with this horrible smoke. | :07:47. | :07:51.
They do not think of us. We have to live through this. You're rdading | :07:52. | :08:05.
this everyday? What can you do? You do you have to do. You worrx about | :08:06. | :08:08.
the consequences later. While James struggles on others have | :08:09. | :08:11.
had to close for the time bding Many with businesses next to Averies | :08:12. | :08:14.
Recycling want to know how ht was ever allowed to get like thhs in the | :08:15. | :08:17.
first place. You're watching Points West, good to | :08:18. | :08:27.
have your company. And we'vd plenty more on tonight's programme, | :08:28. | :08:31.
including a trip to Bruton ` we ask if it's the most fashionable | :08:32. | :08:36.
village in the country. And how eating tomatoes could help | :08:37. | :08:43.
fight against prostate cancdr. In the last week, thousands of | :08:44. | :08:55.
people across the West have asked for their personal details to be | :08:56. | :08:58.
removed from a public register of voters. Councils say the sudden rush | :08:59. | :09:01.
was prompted by a letter whhch warned people their names and | :09:02. | :09:04.
addresses could be sold on to It's landed on every doormat | :09:05. | :09:06.
in the country. 6 million of us will have | :09:07. | :09:16.
to reregister to vote. So far, | :09:17. | :09:20.
only 1 million have bothered. And it's the letter itself | :09:21. | :09:22.
which has left many baffled. Well, if that had gone out | :09:23. | :09:31.
from my office, you think I would This Nailsea voter was told he was | :09:32. | :09:34.
both on and off something c`lled It's a cutdown version | :09:35. | :09:38.
of the electoral roll with names and addresses that can be sold | :09:39. | :09:43.
on by councils. I guess | :09:44. | :09:47.
the council are cash`strappdd, so this is revenue because they | :09:48. | :09:48.
will sell these names on. But for someone who is alre`dy | :09:49. | :09:51.
on the Telephone Preference Service, who really doesn't want | :09:52. | :09:53.
nuisance calls, surely this is going They'll be getting letters | :09:54. | :09:56.
and phone calls And they'll know your address | :09:57. | :09:59.
and everything. Councils say they make very little, | :10:00. | :10:10.
if anything, from the selling of the open register, | :10:11. | :10:12.
which they have to do by law. Here in Bristol, | :10:13. | :10:15.
it will cost a business ?5for 1 00 It is that idea of selling | :10:16. | :10:19.
on your personal information that has prompted a raft | :10:20. | :10:24.
of voters to get in touch whth local What is interesting is we'vd had | :10:25. | :10:27.
a very large response in relation We have had 6000 people over | :10:28. | :10:31.
the last week who have cont`cted the council, primarily throtgh | :10:32. | :10:35.
our website, requesting not to be Opting out of the open register may | :10:36. | :10:38.
spare you from the perils of receiving yet more junk lail | :10:39. | :10:48.
but it will not cost you yotr vote. Those most at risk are studdnts | :10:49. | :10:51.
or people who move often. But all current voters will be | :10:52. | :10:57.
protected until Arable farmers here say this year's | :10:58. | :10:59.
crop is the best for many ydars But they're not celebrating! Th`t's | :11:00. | :11:11.
because supplies are so plentiful prices have fallen consider`bly Our | :11:12. | :11:15.
Somerset correspondent has lore There are rewards at the bottom of | :11:16. | :11:24.
his garden that outweigh thd pressures of global economy for | :11:25. | :11:27.
Barry Bryer. And the future is looking bright for the latest | :11:28. | :11:35.
arrival at Charity Farm near He certainly will not be short of | :11:36. | :11:53.
food. For the first time in many years, these women do not nded to | :11:54. | :12:01.
buy feed for their dairy cows. So plentiful was this your's crop of | :12:02. | :12:12.
maize and hay. The weather has been just right. It has rained at the | :12:13. | :12:18.
right time. Some at the right time. It has just not stopped growing It | :12:19. | :12:24.
has been growing at over ond inch a day since it was put in. Generally, | :12:25. | :12:29.
it has been a bumper year for arable farmers. Those who planted late | :12:30. | :12:34.
haven't found the weather so kind. If you want to get an overvhew of | :12:35. | :12:37.
this year's harvest, this is a good place. Cannington grain acts as a | :12:38. | :12:44.
wholesale storage facility for about 120 Somerset farmers. These silos | :12:45. | :12:54.
can hold tonnes of grain. Wheat yields especially have been high. So | :12:55. | :13:01.
has Bali. About 25% up on l`st year. `` Bali. Prices for the farler have | :13:02. | :13:12.
dropped significantly. About ?145,000 per tonne has dropped to a | :13:13. | :13:19.
lower figure. No further th`n the bottom of this garden to sed how | :13:20. | :13:24.
kind the weather has been to this banana tree. It has produced fruit | :13:25. | :13:27.
for the first time. In the liddle of Somerset. Unbelievable. | :13:28. | :13:33.
Banksy's "Mobile Lovers" has sold for ?403,000 and it's one of the | :13:34. | :13:36.
highest amounts ever paid for one of Banksy's works. The picture's been | :13:37. | :13:38.
bought privately, with all the proceeds going to the Broad Plain | :13:39. | :13:41.
Boys' Club. Banksy said he wanted the Club to have the mural `fter an | :13:42. | :13:44.
ownership tussle with Bristol City Council. Here's Jon Kay. | :13:45. | :13:58.
Left in a doorway in a backstreet in Bristol. Mobile Lovers, by Banksy. | :13:59. | :14:07.
The boys' club next door decided to claim it straightaway. They took it | :14:08. | :14:14.
from the wall. In April, thdy said they would sell it to raise vital | :14:15. | :14:20.
funds. It is like a gift from the sky. It is amazing. Is it yours to | :14:21. | :14:26.
sell? Email I think it was given to us by Banksy as a gift. `` H think. | :14:27. | :14:37.
It started a debate about who owns street art. Today, things wdre more | :14:38. | :14:44.
amicable. This man from the boys' club is not embracing the M`yor of | :14:45. | :14:49.
Bristol. It was a letter from Banksy that ended their feud. He s`id he | :14:50. | :14:53.
wanted the boys' club to have the picture and now it has sold to a | :14:54. | :14:57.
private buyer for any record sum. Did you ever think you would get | :14:58. | :15:05.
?403,000? Never. In all fairness, it is a piece of wood, forgot sake A | :15:06. | :15:11.
fantastic piece of art on it. But that is a lot of money. The money | :15:12. | :15:20.
means this inner`city boys' club, which has been here for mord than | :15:21. | :15:25.
100 years, now has a future. Good news for gang members like this one. | :15:26. | :15:29.
Some it is brilliant. Great news for everyone. All the kids from around | :15:30. | :15:38.
the area. It means everything. What easy to Banksy? A big thank you | :15:39. | :15:46.
Know they have put their own piece of graffiti were Banksy's w`s once | :15:47. | :15:51.
displayed. Proudly watched by Dennis. He says he will not be | :15:52. | :15:56.
taking this one down. Dennis and his team see this picture has not just | :15:57. | :16:01.
saved the boys' club, it has changed what they do here. Street art is now | :16:02. | :16:03.
joining sport as a regular `ctivity. And art lovers are bringing | :16:04. | :16:10.
prosperity to a somerset town too. Bruton is booming, apparently ` | :16:11. | :16:13.
thanks to a heady mix of a new contemporary art gallery and lots of | :16:14. | :16:16.
national media attention. Otr business correspondent Dave Harvey | :16:17. | :16:19.
popped in to what Londoners are They have been selling ten xear for | :16:20. | :16:37.
centuries. This farm shop looks like an art gallery. Each cheese is a | :16:38. | :16:43.
waxwork. Which is just as wdll, since that is what these people have | :16:44. | :16:48.
come to Bruton four. We havdn't heard much about it until the art | :16:49. | :16:52.
gallery opened. There has bden a lot in the national press about it. This | :16:53. | :16:58.
is the gallery. Since we reported it opening in July, 20,000 art lovers | :16:59. | :17:04.
have been. It seems many stop for Cheddar on the way home. Thdy have | :17:05. | :17:12.
been in the newspapers. And magazines. It has brought in lots of | :17:13. | :17:16.
people. But I think Bruton has had a buzz going for years. And that does | :17:17. | :17:21.
means business. Transforming this family dairy and bringing ndw jobs. | :17:22. | :17:25.
When I started dairy farming in 1993, we were young and know the | :17:26. | :17:33.
cheese business is 14 and I hope it will improve. Visitors do not only | :17:34. | :17:43.
look at art and by cheese. They want to stay. In fashionable circles in | :17:44. | :17:50.
London, the word Bruton is cropping up more. People want to livd here. | :17:51. | :17:56.
It is fashionable. And therdfore more expensive? You Mac that is | :17:57. | :18:01.
probably one of the downsidds. Naturally, Londoners want to eat and | :18:02. | :18:09.
drink in style. It is all a bit Notting Hill. That is why one | :18:10. | :18:13.
national newspaper described Bruton recently. Do not say that to the | :18:14. | :18:21.
locals. The success is not just about celebrity froth. It is not | :18:22. | :18:25.
about that. This community has been here since the 12th century. We have | :18:26. | :18:31.
generations of food producers and I think this rural community, this | :18:32. | :18:36.
time and in particular, has regenerated on the back of the | :18:37. | :18:41.
community efforts. It is about the work going on here. Trendy ht may | :18:42. | :18:43.
be, but it is on the up. An idea which started in Brhstol has | :18:44. | :18:52.
gone global ` and is helping to raise money for charity at the same | :18:53. | :18:55.
time. The creators of the P`rk Street slide have sold their concept | :18:56. | :18:58.
to cities around the world hncluding San Francisco, Salt Lake City and | :18:59. | :19:01.
Wigan. For around six hundrdd pounds, buyers get an eightx page | :19:02. | :19:04.
guide to setting up their vdry own slide, including the necess`ry risk | :19:05. | :19:07.
assessments. In the last hour, Bristol chty have | :19:08. | :19:26.
confirmed their captain has joined Brighton Hove Albion on a | :19:27. | :19:34.
four`year contract. Sam joined City two years ago. He won Player of the | :19:35. | :19:38.
Year. The club says it rejected six offers from the championship side | :19:39. | :19:41.
before it finally agreeing ` fee. Now, who would have thought that | :19:42. | :19:44.
` this ` the humble tomato could be helping in the fight against | :19:45. | :19:47.
prostate cancer. Researchers from the University of Bristol h`ve found | :19:48. | :19:49.
that if enough is consumed, then it's claimed men could lower the | :19:50. | :19:52.
risk of developing the dise`se by 18 percent. The research was c`rried | :19:53. | :19:55.
out by Dr Athene Lane who's here Welcome to you. How many do we need | :19:56. | :20:11.
to eat? It was suggested from our research that if you ate ond or two | :20:12. | :20:16.
portions per day, about ten portions per week, we found the men who ate | :20:17. | :20:21.
those tomatoes had a reduced risk of about 20% compared to those who did | :20:22. | :20:28.
not. How many tomatoes any portion? About two or three medium`shzed | :20:29. | :20:32.
tomatoes. You could also have cooked tomatoes. Or a glass of tom`to | :20:33. | :20:39.
juice. We did a pilot and mdn found that drinking tomato juice was | :20:40. | :20:44.
easier. And there are other ways to eat it? Exactly. Tinned tom`toes, | :20:45. | :20:52.
fresh, other foods containing tomatoes. I am sure I have heard | :20:53. | :20:56.
this before that the link bdtween tomatoes is good between prostate | :20:57. | :21:02.
cancer and men. What is new in this research? This is a British study. | :21:03. | :21:09.
It was done in the UK. It w`s large. We had 18,000 people taking part. | :21:10. | :21:13.
Furthermore, we were able to quantify the amount of tomatoes | :21:14. | :21:17.
There has been suggestions `bout matters in the past, but not as | :21:18. | :21:29.
exact as this. I love them. It is an interesting thing. We can't make | :21:30. | :21:33.
recommendations based on ond study. It is broadly in line with what has | :21:34. | :21:37.
happened elsewhere. We would love to do a study where we would ask men to | :21:38. | :21:41.
have a tomato rich diet and compare it to men who do not have that diet | :21:42. | :21:47.
and follow them for a long period of time. Will it reduce your rhsk or | :21:48. | :21:55.
could it? It is that it could reduce your risk. Eating vegetables is part | :21:56. | :22:03.
of a healthy diet anyway, along with exercise. Maybe you could jtst swap | :22:04. | :22:08.
those tomatoes in and that could be beneficial. We have done a pilot | :22:09. | :22:13.
study but we would like to do a bigger study. This is ongoing | :22:14. | :22:18.
research. Thank you for comhng in. I will keep these later! | :22:19. | :22:22.
The Gloucestershire circus, Giffords, is well into its `nnual | :22:23. | :22:25.
tour of the region. It's bedn visiting picturesque villagds and | :22:26. | :22:28.
parks for over ten years ` `nd for them the key is tradition. The | :22:29. | :22:32.
circus is performing at Marlborough Common over the next few daxs ` but | :22:33. | :22:35.
we caught up with the performers mid season as they prepared for shows in | :22:36. | :22:38.
Early morning ` and echoes of a bygone era ` as | :22:39. | :22:44.
Soon ` it's all hands on deck as the transformation begins. | :22:45. | :22:50.
We wanted to create a miniature village green chrcus | :22:51. | :22:53.
that was as good as the continental shelves and was also a nost`lgic | :22:54. | :22:58.
re`creation of what you would imagine a circus from a storybook | :22:59. | :23:03.
If you work for the circus xou live with the circus ` | :23:04. | :23:09.
and spending time behind thd scenes you get a sense of one big family. | :23:10. | :23:12.
I really love this life herd, inside the circus. | :23:13. | :23:16.
That's why when they asked le back, I said yes. | :23:17. | :23:23.
With the first show of the week just hours away, everyone starts to | :23:24. | :23:26.
get ready, although for somd, the props are slightly more complex | :23:27. | :23:29.
And then of course there's Keef the Iron, who's an old favotrite... | :23:30. | :23:35.
Tweedy the Clown is one of the regulars here. | :23:36. | :23:38.
The intimacy is a big thing for me because the audience are so close. | :23:39. | :23:42.
And for comedy, that is very good because they feel | :23:43. | :23:45.
very much part of it and yot can just instantly get that reaction. | :23:46. | :23:48.
Throughout the day there's real excitement as everyone goes through | :23:49. | :23:54.
And also a nod to the futurd ` as the younger generation start to | :23:55. | :24:01.
Giffords tries to evoke a sdnse of a circus from another tile ` and | :24:02. | :24:10.
To sit in the tent and actu`lly see people create something physical | :24:11. | :24:14.
You can see the sweat, you can see the hard work, | :24:15. | :24:18.
you can see the happiness... I think kids are just... | :24:19. | :24:21.
mind`blown by that realness of the entertainment. | :24:22. | :24:27.
After all the hard work and last minute rehearsals ` the circus opens | :24:28. | :24:32.
` the theme, a rip`roaring Greek epic ` | :24:33. | :24:34.
although I promised not to give too much away... | :24:35. | :24:47.
Now let's get the weather. So many people are coming back from holiday | :24:48. | :24:54.
feeling it is cold and damp. Will it change? It could change. As a hint, | :24:55. | :25:02.
there could be good news... There will be some rain on the way. | :25:03. | :25:23.
It will not last throughout a good deal of the day. This evening, the | :25:24. | :25:34.
radar shows some rain ahead of us, moving up from the south`west. There | :25:35. | :25:40.
are moderately heavy outbre`ks of rain. But it is very fragmentary. | :25:41. | :25:47.
That will characterise the weather this evening and into tonight. Some | :25:48. | :26:12.
cleaver weather tomorrow. `` colder. Dying away as the night continues. | :26:13. | :26:21.
It will generally be a mild night. 16 Celsius. Not far behind that for | :26:22. | :26:30.
most of the countryside. A decent and bright start tomorrow for the | :26:31. | :26:34.
rush hour. Lunch time cloud will increase. And here we can sde these | :26:35. | :26:40.
showers moving gradually towards the East. But that is short livdd. It | :26:41. | :26:51.
will brighten by evening. A moderately breezy day. Tempdratures | :26:52. | :27:01.
probably up to about 20 Celsius Low pressure is dominating. By Friday, a | :27:02. | :27:14.
blustery day. Some showers. Some of that will continue into Sattrday. | :27:15. | :27:18.
High`pressure starting to come in later on Saturday, meeting Sunday | :27:19. | :27:24.
look a lot better. Temperattres will rise further. Summer is not over | :27:25. | :27:33.
yet! I love that picture sent in at the beginning. Beautiful. I had rain | :27:34. | :27:41.
in Spain, so it is nice to be back in the West Country! Another | :27:42. | :27:44.
Billiton at 10pm. Goodbye. You asked for it. You got it. | :27:45. | :27:57.
SHRILL WHISTLE I promise not to | :27:58. | :27:59.
take off all my clothes. I'm going up in the world, babes, | :28:00. | :28:02.
and from today, one can't sack someone | :28:03. | :28:05.
for going, "Bleuh-huh-huh-huh" I'm going to teach you | :28:06. | :28:12.
a lesson, Churchy. Where's your shoe? It's in the car. | :28:13. | :28:16.
I'll get it later. Big School returns for a new term. | :28:17. | :28:19.
Oh, ha-ha-ha-ha! Old friends John Thomson | :28:20. | :28:27.
and Simon Day are swapping comedy for Argentina | :28:28. | :28:29.
and the gaucho life... I AM going to moisturise. | :28:30. | :28:32.
It will be secret. ..where men are men, | :28:33. | :28:34.
and the cows aren't laughing. You won't see gauchos sitting down | :28:35. | :28:37.
watching... | :28:38. | :28:41. |
