Protestors against a new cull of badgers have begun gathering

in Somerset amid reports that the shooting may be imminent.

Licences have already been issued for fresh culls to begin in Somerset

and Gloucestershire in an attempt to tackle TB in cattle.

Badgers are being blamed for spreading the disease.

Clinton Rogers has this evening been to the protest camp in Somerset.

Now, the exact start date of the new badger cull both here in Somerset

and in Gloucestershire is being kept a closely guarded secret.

But as you can see behind me, the opponents of the cull have

already started setting up base camp amid strong rumours that

the shooters will be starting their work in the next day or two.

Joining me now is Jay Tiernan, one of the protest group leaders.

You didn't stop it last year, is that not in some ways

Not at all, last year there was a target to kill

at least 2,200 badgers and at the end of six weeks they had killed

A huge difference between 2,200 and 890.

They are back and they have reduced their target

How much impact we will have on them I don't know.

Absolutely, if we can see them we will go and make sure we can stop

Just our presence alone stops them shooting the badgers.

Not everyone is opposed to the cull.

The National Farmers Union insists it is an important weapon

Earlier I spoke to Ian Johnson, the Regional Communications Manager

Last year you had over 400 outbreaks across Somerset and Gloucestershire

and nearly 5,000 cattle slaughtered in those two counties alone.

What is different this year is the target

for the minimum number of badgers to be culled, smaller than last year.

In Somerset it is 316. In Gloucester, 615.

The shooters have a maximum of six weeks to complete that work
