But for Scotland, the campaign continues. The dream shall

:00:00.:00:00.

Welcome to BBC Points West with Amanda Parr and David Garmston.

:00:00.:00:00.

A night of dramatic storms ` thunder and lightning rage

:00:07.:00:10.

for hours and a month of rahn pours down in just one night.

:00:11.:00:14.

Property is damaged and roads flooded after a stdden end

:00:15.:00:17.

We walked back into our livhng room to find there was smoke in there

:00:18.:00:26.

and found a big hole in the wall and all the plugs had shot out and

:00:27.:00:29.

The referendum that shook the UK ` but now is it time for the West to

:00:30.:00:46.

Watch out there are spiders about ` a warning that some large creepy

:00:47.:00:52.

crawlies are coming out of the woodwork.

:00:53.:00:56.

And in the mood for a new challenge ` the

:00:57.:01:04.

World Cup Rugby star, Lewis Moody, gives a local club a master class.

:01:05.:01:16.

The West is still clearing tp tonight after big thunderstorms

:01:17.:01:20.

A month's worth of rain fell in just a few hours

:01:21.:01:24.

and homes were damaged by flash floods and lightning strikes.

:01:25.:01:26.

Wiltshire was particularly badly hit.

:01:27.:01:28.

In Corsham a train was stuck on the line for hours with

:01:29.:01:31.

The intensity of the storm took many by surprise. Across the West,

:01:32.:01:50.

frequent, bright flashes of lightning from Bristol to Corsham.

:01:51.:01:55.

It took seconds to rip the roof of this house. It is fortunate no one

:01:56.:02:01.

was inside the property at the time it was hit by the suspected

:02:02.:02:07.

lightning strike at around ten p.m.. The couple who live here ard on

:02:08.:02:13.

holiday in Greece. The next`door neighbour got a big surprisd. It was

:02:14.:02:17.

like a big gun going off. Then we walked back into our living room to

:02:18.:02:22.

find out there was smoke in there and found a big hole in the wall and

:02:23.:02:25.

all the plugs had shot out `nd they were all over the living room. With

:02:26.:02:29.

the electrical storm came the downpours. A month's rainfall in

:02:30.:02:34.

three hours. The Fire Service was inundated with calls. Within the

:02:35.:02:40.

two`hour duration of the storm we had 240 calls for assistancd. They

:02:41.:02:46.

did not all require a responding appliance but they were assdssed and

:02:47.:02:50.

resources this bastion to the most serious. One of the biggest

:02:51.:02:55.

challenges for the emergencx services was dealing with this train

:02:56.:02:58.

that was stuck in three feet of floodwater outside Corsham. 90

:02:59.:03:03.

people were heading from London to Swansea stranded at one a.m.. A

:03:04.:03:10.

couple of passengers did sax it is looking wet. About 20 minutds later

:03:11.:03:16.

I looked out and the water was up to the bottom of the door of the

:03:17.:03:21.

carriage. It was pretty deep. Passengers had to wait up to five

:03:22.:03:25.

hours until the train was moved and they could get. Long after they had

:03:26.:03:28.

gone the clean`up was still continuing. At this residential

:03:29.:03:34.

home, damage done to the seller had knock`on effect. Provisions had been

:03:35.:03:42.

made to tackle the eventualhty of flooding didn't kick in and so the

:03:43.:03:49.

system was overwhelmed. We had to use to get equipment to get it out.

:03:50.:03:55.

In one street in Corsham, a garden shed was thrust into the ne`rby

:03:56.:04:02.

Brock. Residents lost their prized belongings to the elements. Others

:04:03.:04:07.

had a lucky escape. At the days of dry weather, this was a dralatic

:04:08.:04:08.

wake`up call. Ian, we can see it's caused a lot

:04:09.:04:12.

of damage. The longevity did not help. From the

:04:13.:04:28.

key period from 9pm until 10 p.m., the cluster coming towards Bath

:04:29.:04:35.

which was delivering some of the most damaging lightening strikes. 60

:04:36.:04:40.

millimetres of rain in thred hours and there could be more of this

:04:41.:04:44.

tonight as well. Suggestions of more of that to come and you will be back

:04:45.:04:46.

later. A Gloucestershire couple who

:04:47.:04:51.

subjected five of their children to appalling neglect have had

:04:52.:04:54.

their prison sentences extended The children were left

:04:55.:04:56.

in squalid conditions, sleeping on dirty mattresses

:04:57.:04:57.

in a house full of rubbish. Their parents, who can't be named,

:04:58.:05:00.

were jailed in June but the And today the Court of Appe`l

:05:04.:05:06.

:05:23.:05:29.

are governed is to change ` that was the pledge today

by the Prime Minister Edinburgh is to be handed more

:05:45.:05:46.

powers but they're to be matched Some reckon it could especi`lly

:05:47.:05:51.

boost cities like Bristol. Here's our political editor

:05:52.:06:00.

Paul Barltrop. Scotland's flag was flying limpet in

:06:01.:06:10.

central Bristol. Looking better was the union track as people rdact to

:06:11.:06:16.

the news. I am pleased. I understand the reason why Scotland was getting

:06:17.:06:22.

and is getting more money and help, but we don't need to forget the

:06:23.:06:28.

English. I would lead to thd Scottish people to stay in the

:06:29.:06:32.

kingdom, but I think there will be lots of things to unravel and there

:06:33.:06:35.

will be enormous pressure on Westminster. The main partids

:06:36.:06:41.

promised all forms of devolttion to Scotland to try to keep thel in the

:06:42.:06:46.

union. We hope they will look at places like this city and ghve more

:06:47.:06:51.

powers here. The Prime Minister was quick off the mark. We have heard

:06:52.:06:56.

the voice of Scotland and now the millions of voices of England must

:06:57.:07:00.

also be heard. He promised simultaneous change roadsidds of the

:07:01.:07:05.

border with an end to Scotthsh MPs voting on matters that only concern

:07:06.:07:12.

England. It is also important we have wider civic engagement about

:07:13.:07:17.

how to improve governance through the United Kingdom, including how to

:07:18.:07:21.

empower our great cities. That is music to the ears of George

:07:22.:07:26.

Ferguson, the elect did Mayor of Bristol. We have got to grasp the

:07:27.:07:30.

moment. I think all of the political parties are getting it. It held an

:07:31.:07:34.

Isa is them to think about where do we go from here. `` it galv`nises

:07:35.:07:43.

them. We need to have much lore joined up thinking. Almost dveryone

:07:44.:07:46.

agrees change is needed, but deciding what that change whll be

:07:47.:07:49.

will be much harder. Let's speak now to

:07:50.:07:54.

the former Defence Secretarx and North Somerset MP Liam Fox,

:07:55.:07:56.

who is himself Scottish. A momentous day in the history of

:07:57.:08:09.

the United Kingdom, particularly our relationship with Scotland. Was the

:08:10.:08:13.

Prime Minister right to offdr these extra powers to people north of the

:08:14.:08:19.

border. It is part of a widdr settlement and I was talking to

:08:20.:08:22.

voters in Glasgow yesterday, and they were saying they would have

:08:23.:08:28.

voted for independence had ht not been for a different packagd being

:08:29.:08:33.

put in front of them. There are three issues coming from it. The

:08:34.:08:38.

first is, which powers will be devolved to Scotland, it is not

:08:39.:08:42.

clear which one is they will be How will the English question the

:08:43.:08:48.

saddle? I am clear there can be no deal for Scotland before we even be

:08:49.:08:52.

no deal for Scotland before we envy vote on issues like health `nd

:08:53.:08:55.

education in Bristol and thd West, but unable to vote on those issues

:08:56.:09:01.

in their own constituencies because they are devolved. And the final

:09:02.:09:06.

elements of the package and how that relates to the Barnett formtla and

:09:07.:09:09.

wider funding in the UK. A lot of detail to be sorted out. Wh`t about

:09:10.:09:15.

this idea of city states whdre someone like restore might have huge

:09:16.:09:21.

towers, perhaps on a par with those in the Edinburgh government? It

:09:22.:09:27.

would depend on what the people in the area wanted. I would not want in

:09:28.:09:32.

North Somerset, a recreation of a vent, with the problems it brought

:09:33.:09:37.

to us. I think we need to look to see what suits the different parts

:09:38.:09:43.

of the country. I am very clear that what we have at the moment hs far

:09:44.:09:48.

too London centric and we h`ve to ensure the governance of our own

:09:49.:09:52.

areas is left more to the voters in our own areas. But I think we have

:09:53.:09:56.

to be careful we are not crdating new monoliths that will be lust

:09:57.:10:02.

responsive to voters and thd lesson from yesterday in the Scotthsh

:10:03.:10:05.

referendum was, you can get a huge turnout when the voters feel their

:10:06.:10:11.

votes matter and there is a choice available.

:10:12.:10:16.

Swindon Borough Council is investigating whether a Swindon

:10:17.:10:18.

recycling centre could be closed down following a fire

:10:19.:10:21.

The fire at Averies Recyling began in July but was only

:10:22.:10:24.

In a unanimous vote last night, the town's Council decided to look into

:10:25.:10:29.

what happened and whether or not the fire could have been prdvented.

:10:30.:10:31.

No`one from Averies was available to comment.

:10:32.:10:36.

If you're not a fan of spiders then watch out.

:10:37.:10:39.

There have been claims that we're going to see more of the crdatures

:10:40.:10:43.

According to an academic at the University of Gloucestershire,

:10:44.:10:50.

the mild weather means therd's been more around for them to eat.

:10:51.:10:53.

Well, our reporter Andy How`rd has been investigating whether it

:10:54.:10:56.

For many people, this is ex`ctly what you don't want to see crawling

:10:57.:11:12.

across the living room floor. The angular legs, the darker wadi and

:11:13.:11:17.

the fact that spiders like to hide in murky corners makes them the

:11:18.:11:26.

perfect storm of scariness. Why am I in Gloucestershire laboratory? These

:11:27.:11:30.

creepy crawlies coming into our has just got scientific. It has been a

:11:31.:11:35.

mild autumn and there are lots of insects around they are feeding on.

:11:36.:11:41.

I suspect it is a good season if you are a spider. They have dond well

:11:42.:11:46.

and we may see higher numbers in our houses. It there is lots of prey

:11:47.:11:51.

these animals can reach thehr potential. They will be in places

:11:52.:11:58.

like this. Luckily for our friend here, the bathtub is owned by an

:11:59.:12:03.

expert. It is a boy, Ye has been running around the house looking for

:12:04.:12:09.

girls. There is a good chance he will meet the bathtub at sole time.

:12:10.:12:15.

When he gets in, he cannot get out. If you put a bath towel over the

:12:16.:12:21.

edge, the spider will climb up it, and he will be gone. Are thdy

:12:22.:12:27.

dangerous? Not particularly. There is the false widow and therd is a

:12:28.:12:35.

lot of hype about them. Yes they can give you a bite, but you ard in no

:12:36.:12:40.

danger from them. As this one goes to sleep for another night, there is

:12:41.:12:44.

nothing to worry about? What would you do if that was in your house? It

:12:45.:12:54.

makes me itchy. I can't. I would run away screaming, it is enormous. It

:12:55.:12:58.

is common to be in our housds this autumn. Really? I am not gohng to

:12:59.:13:05.

sleep now. What would you do? Scream. Scream and run.

:13:06.:13:12.

And we've had lots of your comments about spiders and your feelhngs

:13:13.:13:16.

about them on our Facebook page Do take a look.

:13:17.:13:30.

Lewis Moody has won the Rugby World Cup and played for England 71 times.

:13:31.:13:34.

But now the former Bath plaxer has taken up a position coaching

:13:35.:13:36.

Our sports reporter, Alistair Durden,

:13:37.:13:41.

is at Kingsholm for Gloucester's game with Exeter tonight.

:13:42.:13:48.

Ali this must be quite a cotp for Bradford on Avon?

:13:49.:13:55.

It is. Imagine the look on their opposition's faces when thex see

:13:56.:14:02.

Lewis Moody on the touchlind. Any sportsman or women will tell

:14:03.:14:08.

you, giving up playing is the hardest

:14:09.:14:10.

thing to do as you miss the buzz. Lewis Moody played

:14:11.:14:13.

at the very top level. He got involved with Bradford

:14:14.:14:15.

on Avon because his eldest son I've been to speak to him about

:14:16.:14:18.

his new challenge and tomorrow's mouth`watering contest betwden his

:14:19.:14:22.

two former clubs Bath and Ldicester. So,

:14:23.:14:28.

these boys are going to go through. When a World Cup winner talks,

:14:29.:14:30.

people tend to listen. Lewis Moody may not play anx more

:14:31.:14:36.

but his never`say`die attittde He was forced to retire early

:14:37.:14:38.

through injury, but his passion for the gamd has

:14:39.:14:46.

been reignited by his local club. I think when you've been out of

:14:47.:14:51.

the game for the two years H I just love it,

:14:52.:14:54.

they've got so much enthusi`sm. It's proper grassroots and xou're

:14:55.:15:00.

lucky if we get ten or 15 gtys We're now getting consistently more,

:15:01.:15:03.

but just that enthusiasm for the game is what really brought

:15:04.:15:07.

me up here. Lewis played most of his rugby with

:15:08.:15:10.

Leicester, winning seven Prdmiership titles and helping them domhnate

:15:11.:15:12.

the sport and rivals, Bath. My favourite memory is

:15:13.:15:18.

when I played at Leicester with Some really brutal

:15:19.:15:20.

encounters over the years occasions in the Heineken Ctp

:15:21.:15:26.

quarterfinal and play`off g`mes My last game for Leicester

:15:27.:15:31.

at Welford Road was against Bath and we won

:15:32.:15:34.

by I think three or four pohnts So it was a good day,

:15:35.:15:36.

it was a good day to end my career at Welford Road and a difficult one

:15:37.:15:40.

to start my new career at B`th on. Injuries prevented him

:15:41.:15:44.

from making the same impact at Bath, but he believes Bath are finally

:15:45.:15:46.

getting closer to reclaiming In the 80s when I watched as a kid,

:15:47.:15:49.

Bath were dominant. For me it was such a great club it

:15:50.:15:56.

was destined to be back up there. I think they have developed well

:15:57.:16:00.

in the last three or four sdasons, now they just need

:16:01.:16:03.

the experience in those big games and those finals which they got

:16:04.:16:06.

a little bit of last year. It might not be this season

:16:07.:16:09.

but it will certainly be the season after where they

:16:10.:16:14.

will be really pushing for silverware and I see no reason why

:16:15.:16:17.

they can't be up there this year. But he won't be at the Rec to see

:16:18.:16:20.

his two old clubs to fight ht out. Much more important to him hs

:16:21.:16:24.

getting a win in Bradford`on`Avon's Tonight of course it is Glotcester

:16:25.:16:40.

against Exeter. The crowd is just building. We were hoping to grab a

:16:41.:16:48.

word with James Simpson`Danhel, but he is stuck in traffic. He will be

:16:49.:16:52.

here to watch his side. He has just announced his retirement, h`ving to

:16:53.:16:55.

deal with life after rugby. One other game to mention is

:16:56.:17:00.

on Sunday Bristol take on Swindon Town's chairman has

:17:01.:17:03.

called on the club's absent Lee Power says crowds at thd

:17:04.:17:08.

County Ground are down by 1,000 That's despite the club being

:17:09.:17:14.

seventh in the table and unbeaten This is what manager Mark Cooper

:17:15.:17:19.

has had to say about the issue. If you keep winning

:17:20.:17:30.

people will come. Much more people will come

:17:31.:17:36.

and watch but we can't really do We didn't play great

:17:37.:17:39.

the other night but we still scored It was an entertaining game,

:17:40.:17:43.

so I can't affect that. Tomorrow Swindon are

:17:44.:17:48.

at home to Sheffield United. Leaders Bristol City

:17:49.:18:02.

are away to Fleetwood. And Yeovil are up against another

:18:03.:18:03.

of the high`fliers, Peterborough. Look who has arrived, James

:18:04.:18:17.

Simpson`Daniel. Glad you cotld make it. 14 years of Lane, how are you

:18:18.:18:22.

getting to grips with retirdment? It is tough. `` playing. My job has

:18:23.:18:30.

been to play out here and stddenly it is taken away from you and you

:18:31.:18:34.

start to think what next. All you have ever focused on is your time

:18:35.:18:40.

playing. That hasn't changed. It is different to being on the shdelines

:18:41.:18:45.

as a supporter. It is something I am going to have to get used to. Next

:18:46.:18:48.

time I promise we will have longer to talk. If you are not comhng down

:18:49.:18:53.

here tonight, it is on BBC Radio Gloucester. We will have thd match

:18:54.:18:57.

action at 10:25 p.m.. It you've seen Points West this week

:18:58.:19:10.

you'll know we're celebrating 8 We wanted to give you a taste of

:19:11.:19:12.

what it's like behind the scenes so Yes, here's the gallery

:19:13.:19:18.

and some colleagues who'd r`ther Sorry guys,

:19:19.:19:21.

anyone going to give us a w`ve? This is where they literallx call

:19:22.:19:25.

the shots, choose the camer`s, count the seconds, this is where

:19:26.:19:32.

Points West is really made. But you'll know

:19:33.:19:36.

so much more television is lade here And John Craven has been looking

:19:37.:19:39.

at how all the programmes m`de here have helped turn Bristol

:19:40.:19:47.

into a real creative hotspot. Bristol's creativity is

:19:48.:19:57.

world famous and the city's We are here with the

:19:58.:19:59.

Antiques Road Show. I've come to meet Paul Appldby,

:20:00.:20:05.

who's got his finger firmly on the Paul, what do you reckon thd impact

:20:06.:20:10.

has been on Bristol over thd years both commercially and artistically

:20:11.:20:16.

of the BBC setting up shop here I think it's fair to

:20:17.:20:20.

say it's been immense. When you have the nation's

:20:21.:20:22.

broadcaster in your front g`rden, then it's a brilliant thing because

:20:23.:20:25.

it created a very vibrant ecology. Bristol must be good

:20:26.:20:29.

because Countryfile has movdd here You are welcome,

:20:30.:20:32.

because the fact is that wh`t that We've got everything

:20:33.:20:37.

from natural history through rural We've got

:20:38.:20:41.

the whole production packagd. That means there is

:20:42.:20:46.

a springboard out of TV and entertainment into health c`re, into

:20:47.:20:49.

the factual content that actually people are absorbing on apps

:20:50.:20:52.

and all that sort of stuff `s well. How do you see the future for

:20:53.:20:55.

the actual Whiteladies Road site? It's been there for many ye`rs,

:20:56.:21:00.

there's a lot of old... It is like a rabbit warren

:21:01.:21:02.

and there is a modern section. The important thing is to bd

:21:03.:21:06.

in the right place. So in central Bristol,

:21:07.:21:08.

the thing that I call the Unsquare Mile, there is everything you could

:21:09.:21:12.

want and that includes Whitdladies Road, it includes the new enterprise

:21:13.:21:15.

zone at Temple Meads. The key thing is we have

:21:16.:21:18.

the right community here. There is a question as to whether

:21:19.:21:26.

in 2030, people working out of Georgian houses will be

:21:27.:21:29.

the right place for them to be. But what that depends on is how

:21:30.:21:34.

people connect to each other. So who knows, the future might see a

:21:35.:21:37.

change, but for me the BBC Bristol site has a quirky character that

:21:38.:21:41.

blends the past with the prdsent. For instance,

:21:42.:21:44.

the Secret Britain office used to be Once a bed was brought in

:21:45.:21:47.

on the orders of Sophia Lordn when she wanted a rest

:21:48.:21:54.

before appearing on Points West Take a stroll

:21:55.:21:59.

across the car park and you will see BBC Two's magazine programmd

:22:00.:22:02.

for deaf people is also produced Up on the roof, there's the

:22:03.:22:16.

BBC Bristol garden, designed by Chelsea Gold medal winner,

of the 27th season. You are either

:23:51.:23:56.

a mug you have to enjoy it. I have real affection for

:23:57.:23:59.

Points West. I have a huge affection

:24:00.:24:04.

and deep respect for BBC Brhstol it has been at the heart

:24:05.:24:08.

and the core of the BBC through its history and I think, wow,

:24:09.:24:11.

I'm glad I was part of that once. Of course,

:24:12.:24:16.

let's not forget local radio. Just time to pop in

:24:17.:24:18.

for a quick live interview. This is Lucy with you on

so many people's lives. And there?s more from John Craven

:24:32.:24:35.

because Alex Lovell and I are hosting a special event

:24:36.:24:56.

with him looking back It's on Wednesday, October 0st

:24:57.:25:01.

at 7.30pm, here at Broadcasting Tickets are free and available

:25:02.:25:08.

via the Eventbrite website. We'll put a link to the website

:25:09.:25:13.

on our Facebook page. We have talked about the

:25:14.:25:52.

thunderstorms already. Lucy says this is her favourite tree. The

:25:53.:26:02.

lightning has blown it apart. Anyway, we do run the risk of seeing

:26:03.:26:05.

further thunderstorms tonight, but not tomorrow. They will fadd away

:26:06.:26:10.

during the course of the money. `` morning. Fresher feel and dry as

:26:11.:26:21.

well. Looking quite a benign weekend. The radar has been showing

:26:22.:26:24.

one or two showers about during the course of the day. But the reaction

:26:25.:26:31.

has been out to eastern part of England with lively thunderstorms.

:26:32.:26:35.

We will be watching towards the West for the threat of similar

:26:36.:26:38.

developments as the night wdars on. The Met office has a warning which

:26:39.:26:45.

will run until 9am tomorrow. It is roughly through the M4 corrhdor but

:26:46.:26:49.

if we see any thunderstorms tonight, that is where they will evolve. The

:26:50.:26:57.

forecast picks up on the likelihood of these developments. Don't take

:26:58.:27:01.

this literally, it is giving a hint as to the sort of areas we lay see

:27:02.:27:05.

them perform. There is a gr`dual eastwards drift to night. M`ny of

:27:06.:27:11.

you, as you come further sotthwards and Westwood who will be untroubled

:27:12.:27:16.

by the stuff, if it develops at all. There will be low cloud and

:27:17.:27:21.

hillfort, but another mild night. `` hill fog. Tomorrow, if we h`ve had

:27:22.:27:28.

any showers or storms they should have drifted to the east by

:27:29.:27:32.

daybreak. Should be a dry start Low cloud around and low visibility

:27:33.:27:36.

Gradually through the morning things will improve. Brighter weather in

:27:37.:27:40.

the afternoon and probably stained right through the rest of the day.

:27:41.:27:44.

Temperatures into the low 20s. What a lively night.

:27:45.:27:48.

Thank you for that. I will be back with bulletins across the wdekend.

:27:49.:27:52.

Goodbye for now.
