Good evening. BBC Two, but now on BBC One, it s | :00:10. | :00:11.
A Somali family from Bristol say they're distraught and devastated | :00:12. | :00:14.
after their 15`year`old daughter left home without warning ` | :00:15. | :00:18.
and is now thought to be he`ding to Syria to join extremists. | :00:19. | :00:21.
The police fear she's been radicalised ` and wants to | :00:22. | :00:24.
The teenage girl from Bristol hasn't been formally named by police. | :00:25. | :00:33.
The Turkish border with Syrha, where Islamic State terrorists | :00:34. | :00:40.
Back at her family home in Bristol, a family fear they've lost | :00:41. | :00:46.
She is intelligent, a beautiful young lady who hs missed | :00:47. | :00:53.
This is Anira Khokhar, who's acting as the family spokesperson. | :00:54. | :00:59.
The father is so proactive in the life of his kids, he was | :01:00. | :01:03.
taking part in recreational and educational activities with them. | :01:04. | :01:07.
And the mother speaks very good English and she is very supportive | :01:08. | :01:11.
of her family, so for them it's a very serious shock. | :01:12. | :01:15.
The teenager disappeared last Wednesday after apparently | :01:16. | :01:18.
It's known she flew from He`throw, where she may have met | :01:19. | :01:22.
Police have tracked her to Istanbul and are worried | :01:23. | :01:28.
It's of major concern in thd neighbourhood she's left behind | :01:29. | :01:35.
To be honest, I think it's the third or fourth Somali girl missing now. | :01:36. | :01:38.
I think most of these girls are misguided. | :01:39. | :01:44.
I have been living in Bristol for 24 years now. | :01:45. | :01:47.
I'm a parent myself, I've got three girls and whdn I hear | :01:48. | :01:50.
things like this, especiallx 15 years old, it is shocking. | :01:51. | :01:54.
Muna Abdi runs the Bristol Somali Forum. | :01:55. | :01:57.
Somalis worry about radicalhsation ` some call it brainwashing. | :01:58. | :02:02.
Did it happen to the missing teenager, and if so how? | :02:03. | :02:07.
I can't give you any answers where the young girl is or why or how | :02:08. | :02:12.
but if it is internet, everx household in the UK or the world... | :02:13. | :02:18.
we need to figure out if we are safe in our homes. | :02:19. | :02:21.
The police say we must all be vigilant and ready to spot | :02:22. | :02:24.
Tonight, in Easton, the family have asked for privacy. | :02:25. | :02:29.
They fear they may never sed their teenage daughter again. | :02:30. | :02:39.
So what makes a teenage girl, growing up in Bristol, | :02:40. | :02:42.
want to go and fight with tdrrorists in one of the most dangerous | :02:43. | :02:45.
And how was she able to plan her trip and leave, | :02:46. | :02:49.
And now at the heart of the battle over Islamic State. | :02:50. | :03:00.
Already the group, which is sometimes called ISIS, | :03:01. | :03:03.
sometimes ISIL, sometimes IS, has taken over large parts of Syria | :03:04. | :03:08.
Their aim is to create a new Islamic State, which would join large parts | :03:09. | :03:16.
The group is willing to fight, to kill and to die for the cause. | :03:17. | :03:21.
Western leaders describe thdm as one of the biggest threats | :03:22. | :03:23.
in the world today and say they must be stopped. | :03:24. | :03:26.
So what makes a girl from Bristol want to join them? | :03:27. | :03:30.
These girls are what I class as the 9/11 generation, these `re the | :03:31. | :03:34.
girls who have often experidnced marginalisation particularlx after | :03:35. | :03:36.
9/11 and 7/7, the British mddia have often portrayed these young girls as | :03:37. | :03:41.
being the enemy within and that is how a lot | :03:42. | :03:44.
That increasing marginalisation with increasing political and | :03:45. | :03:50.
religious narrative that is trying to frame the worldview of these men | :03:51. | :03:54.
and women, it is often almost portrayed as saying, Islamic State | :03:55. | :03:57.
will look after you, we are going to look | :03:58. | :04:00.
Organisations like Inspire are working hard to try | :04:01. | :04:05.
to stop this process of what is called radicalising young pdople, | :04:06. | :04:10.
making them believe that thhs is all worth fighting and dying for. | :04:11. | :04:14.
It often happens online but experts say that is not the full story. | :04:15. | :04:19.
What we have found is that Luslim women themselves very much want to | :04:20. | :04:23.
challenge extremism but we know with colleagues who are | :04:24. | :04:25.
working in Bristol that oftdn the male community leaders try to | :04:26. | :04:28.
We are aware of a male commtnity leader who acts as a represdntative | :04:29. | :04:36.
for a British local mosque hn Bristol who has tried, just a few | :04:37. | :04:39.
months earlier, to articulate the view that British jihadis who go and | :04:40. | :04:43.
join and fight in Syria are participating in a noble catse. | :04:44. | :04:46.
This is not the kind of language we need to hear | :04:47. | :04:53.
from representatives of mospues or self`appointed community le`ders, | :04:54. | :04:55.
this is giving mixed messagds and is incredibly unhelpful. | :04:56. | :04:57.
Already questions are being asked about how a 15`year`old could just | :04:58. | :05:01.
travel abroad to such a dangerous place on her own but | :05:02. | :05:03.
at the moment, over the age of 2, there are no hard and fast rules | :05:04. | :05:07.
However she did it and whatdver her motivation, everyone agrees | :05:08. | :05:13.
that more needs to be done to stop this from happening. | :05:14. | :05:21.
In other news tonight, detectives investigating | :05:22. | :05:24.
the murder of Bath woman Melanie Hall have asked the Crown | :05:25. | :05:27.
Prosecution Service for a ddcision on whether to charge a suspdct. | :05:28. | :05:30.
A 45`year`old man was arrested at his home in the city last | :05:31. | :05:33.
His bail's now been extended until the start of December. | :05:34. | :05:39.
Her remains were found on a motorway slip road in 2009 | :05:40. | :05:49.
Messages recorded by local schoolchildren, encouraging | :05:50. | :05:51.
people not to smoke, are now being played out through a loudspdaker at | :05:52. | :05:54.
The experiment's begun outshde the main entrance of the maternhty unit | :05:55. | :06:01.
where bosses say people are still lighting up, even though thd whole | :06:02. | :06:05.
In sport, Forest Green Rovers have beaten high`flying Torquay | :06:06. | :06:13.
in the Conference at the New Lawn, thanks to goals from Jon Parkin | :06:14. | :06:16.
And Bristol Rovers remains unbeaten after six games. | :06:17. | :06:20.
Newsnight's starting over on Two and tonight Evan Davis talks to | :06:21. | :06:27.
We're back tomorrow with our latest news ` that's | :06:28. | :06:32.
on breakfast from 6, but for now here's Jemma with the weathdr. | :06:33. | :06:37.
A better means a settled story for the rest of the week, changd comes | :06:38. | :06:50.
at the end, Friday into Sattrday, until then a settled picturd, not as | :06:51. | :06:52.
much sunshine as today, somd patchy rain and drizzle, still feeling warm | :06:53. | :06:55.
to the end of the week, change comes at the weekend. Overnight, plenty of | :06:56. | :06:58.
cloud coverage, the lows ard 15 Celsius, a week where systel brings | :06:59. | :07:02.
some patchy rain and drizzld and mist and murk ant hill fault to kick | :07:03. | :07:08.
off Wednesday. Wednesday is not a bad story, not as bright and sunny | :07:09. | :07:11.
as Tuesday, a little bit of drizzle here and there but the cloud will | :07:12. | :07:16.
break by tomorrow afternoon, possibly even the odd 20 Celsius to | :07:17. | :07:22.
take us through the afternoon. It stays at settled into Thursday, | :07:23. | :07:27.
highs bucking this seasonal norm. It is rather wet and windy on Friday. | :07:28. | :07:30.
Dry and crisp on Saturday. breezy through Saturday afternoon | :07:31. | :07:35.
with a change in the temperature. More information on that now with | :07:36. | :07:36.
Alex. Good evening. It's farewell fair | :07:37. | :07:45.
weather September. A very warm month. Incredibly dry. Why so? All | :07:46. | :07:52.
to do with the jet stream. Mostly to the north and the fast-moving ribbon | :07:53. | :07:57.
of the air has been searing the pressures from the UK. If you are | :07:58. | :08:01.
after more boisterous autumn whether, it need it to drive | :08:02. | :08:05.
southwards and that's what will be happening. No-pressure conditions. | :08:06. | :08:12.
-- low-pressure conditions. Not there just yet. There will be some | :08:13. | :08:16.
damp weather to end September. Fronts returning to the far | :08:17. | :08:19.
north-west of Scotland and to Northern Ireland too. In between, it | :08:20. | :08:23.
may turn misty and murky. It will be a mild night, with temperatures in | :08:24. | :08:26.
towns and cities in the teens. Not a cold start to Wednesday. A rather | :08:27. | :08:32.
drab one. One or two mist and fog patches around. They will clear | :08:33. | :08:36.
Across Scotland and Northern Ireland, after a grey start, the | :08:37. | :08:40.
afternoon looks promising in terms of sun. | :08:41. | :08:42. |
