Welcome to Wales Today. Tonight's top story. | :00:04. | :00:07.
Midwives under pressure. The warning tonight as more pregnant | :00:07. | :00:17.
:00:17. | :00:26. | ||
Tributes to a mother of two who died in her tent on a family | :00:26. | :00:30.
holiday. He conned investors out of | :00:30. | :00:33.
thousands of pounds setting up his ostrich farm. The manhunt for a | :00:33. | :00:43.
:00:43. | :00:45. | ||
fraudster who's failed to return to prison. There is a gigantic fire | :00:45. | :00:49.
burning. A desperate plea for help but | :00:49. | :00:57.
there's no fire. The hoax callers putting lives at risk. And it is | :00:57. | :01:01.
the final week for Wales's players to press for selection, but there | :01:01. | :01:09.
Good evening. Midwives are being put under huge pressure because of | :01:09. | :01:12.
the large number of pregnant women who smoke, drink and are obese - | :01:12. | :01:16.
the highest rates in the UK. The problem has been highlighted in a | :01:16. | :01:19.
report by Healthcare Inspectorate Wales. Our Health Correspondent | :01:19. | :01:29.
:01:29. | :01:32. | ||
Arwyn Jones is here with more for us. Iraq 35,000 babies born at | :01:32. | :01:42.
:01:42. | :01:42. | ||
every year in Wales and the Ikea for by a 1,500 midwives. There are | :01:42. | :01:48.
some startling figures regarding pregnant women in Wales. According | :01:48. | :01:52.
to official figures one in five pregnant women continue to smoke | :01:52. | :02:01.
throughout pregnancy. That is the highest rate in the UK. They have | :02:01. | :02:06.
also the highest obesity rates and also the highest drinking great. | :02:06. | :02:14.
Almost half of women in Wales say they drink while they are pregnant. | :02:14. | :02:18.
The government say they have been concerned about this for a while. | :02:18. | :02:24.
According to those who care for expectant mothers these can be | :02:24. | :02:31.
damaging issues. There is an increased risk of women developing | :02:31. | :02:37.
diabetes which can mean that their babies will gain weight. They may | :02:37. | :02:45.
also suffer problems after birth. Smoking reduces the nutrition and | :02:45. | :02:48.
oxygen passed to the baby and cannot result in growth restricted | :02:48. | :02:55.
babies. Some of midwives say they should have a more proactive role | :02:55. | :02:59.
so that they can advise women to make lifestyle choices before they | :02:59. | :03:06.
get pregnant. This is a challenge that government and clinicians are | :03:06. | :03:11.
determined to get to grips Vinny Ness from the Health Care | :03:11. | :03:13.
Inspectorate wrote this report and joins me now. | :03:13. | :03:16.
So how does this problem of obesity, alcohol and smoking impact on the | :03:16. | :03:26.
:03:26. | :03:27. | ||
work of midwives? When women do choose perhaps less than healthy | :03:27. | :03:31.
lifestyles it picks them up under additional risk in pregnancy. They | :03:31. | :03:38.
have more of a tendency towards caesarean sections perhaps. Their | :03:38. | :03:43.
babies require considerable support after birth. All of these things | :03:43. | :03:47.
lead to the mid-life having to have more input through those sort of | :03:47. | :03:57.
:03:57. | :03:57. | ||
difficult times rather than perhaps at the early part. | :03:57. | :04:05.
Presumably its putting mothers and babies' lives at risk? There is | :04:05. | :04:12.
increased risk. Supervisor's of midwives help support Ms Wade's to | :04:12. | :04:16.
look for her innovative ways of helping women to choose more | :04:16. | :04:23.
healthy ways of living. Whether that be asked report from slimming | :04:23. | :04:30.
clubs. There are many reports of good practice across Wales helping | :04:30. | :04:40.
women to address these issues. How can midwives help tackle this | :04:40. | :04:50.
problem? It is about trying to prioritise and being more front | :04:50. | :04:55.
loading. Talking to women before they become pregnant ideally. Young | :04:55. | :05:01.
people in the youth clubs. Help people to adopt a healthier | :05:01. | :05:09.
lifestyle before they become pregnant. | :05:09. | :05:13.
Friends have been paying tribute to a mother of two who died after her | :05:13. | :05:15.
family were overcome by fumes in a tent. Tracy Screen from | :05:15. | :05:18.
Chesterfield in Derbyshire was staying at a campsite near | :05:18. | :05:21.
Caernarfon. Her husband, son and daughter are recovering in hospital. | :05:21. | :05:24.
Police and paramedics were called to the Aberafon camp site at Gyrn | :05:24. | :05:30.
Goch between Pwllheli and Carnarfon yesterday morning. They had been | :05:30. | :05:33.
alerted after others staying at the site had taken the children aged 4 | :05:33. | :05:37.
and 7 to safety. 34 year old Tracy Screen, the mother of the two | :05:37. | :05:40.
children, was declared dead at the scene. Her husband was airlifted to | :05:40. | :05:42.
Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor and the children were taken by ambulance. | :05:42. | :05:52.
:05:52. | :05:57. | ||
They're all said to be in a comfortable condition. She was she | :05:57. | :06:04.
was a wonderful and caring wife. She was a friend to many people and | :06:04. | :06:11.
will be deeply missed. Early indications are the family may have | :06:11. | :06:17.
been overcome by fumes in the tent. As yet the results of the post- | :06:17. | :06:24.
mortem have not been released. This is the second tragedy at a | :06:24. | :06:29.
campsite in this region this summer. The Royal Society for the | :06:29. | :06:34.
Prevention of accidents say three people have died from suspected | :06:34. | :06:41.
carbon monoxide poisoning in tents in the past six weeks. Stoves | :06:41. | :06:48.
should not be used indoors. Event matches a dangerous. The dangers of | :06:48. | :06:52.
fires and carbon monoxide are prevalent. People need to use | :06:52. | :06:57.
common sense to reduce their risks. The tent is an indoor space, there | :06:57. | :07:07.
:07:07. | :07:09. | ||
is not the same level of ventilation. Gas appliances are | :07:09. | :07:17.
safe for outdoor use only. Police say they are not treating the death | :07:17. | :07:20.
as suspicious. Hundreds of Welsh jobs could be | :07:20. | :07:23.
under threat following Bank of America's decision to leave the UK | :07:23. | :07:26.
credit card market. The company, which has a site close to the Welsh | :07:26. | :07:29.
border in Chester, employs around 4,000 people, many of whom commute | :07:29. | :07:37.
from North Wales. The company says it will find a solution for | :07:37. | :07:41.
employees as soon as possible. A manhunt has been launched for a | :07:41. | :07:44.
conman who's failed to return to prison. 49 year old Martin Evans | :07:44. | :07:46.
from Pontardulais swindled investors out of thousands of | :07:46. | :07:49.
pounds and in 2006 was jailed for 21 years for dealing drugs and | :07:49. | :07:52.
fraud. Wiltshire Police say he absconded after being released on a | :07:52. | :08:02.
licence. Here's Matt Murray. A former or Welsh businessman of the | :08:02. | :08:06.
year, he took to crime when his business folded in the 1990s. He | :08:07. | :08:12.
swindled investors out of their savings in an ostrich farm scam. He | :08:12. | :08:17.
and his then wife set at the farm up in Swansea in 1996. They | :08:17. | :08:23.
promised investors fantastic returns on their money. They sold | :08:23. | :08:29.
the meat as a healthy alternative to lamb. They conned 115 people out | :08:29. | :08:33.
of nearly 1 million. The investors were on the aware of the scam when | :08:33. | :08:38.
the business for that within six months. Before he came to trial he | :08:38. | :08:43.
fled to Spain with his secretary and business -- and buses to start | :08:43. | :08:53.
:08:53. | :08:54. | ||
a new life. The former her award- winning businessman was convicted | :08:54. | :09:01.
five years ago and was sentenced to 21 years in jail, but police | :09:01. | :09:04.
released him on temporary licence to an address in Swansea for three | :09:04. | :09:09.
days. He was due to return one week ago but has not been seen since. | :09:09. | :09:12.
Anyone with any information is being asked to contact police | :09:12. | :09:15.
immediately. Still to come tonight, we'll have | :09:15. | :09:18.
details of the wales team to play Argentina. Also: 100 years ago | :09:18. | :09:21.
these railwaymen were marching for better pay, but two of them were | :09:21. | :09:29.
shot dead when soldiers opened fire. If you travel on the trains | :09:29. | :09:32.
crossing the border between Wales and England expect to pay around 8 | :09:32. | :09:37.
% more for your tickets next year. Many travellers say fares are | :09:37. | :09:40.
already too high - and experts are warning further price hikes could | :09:40. | :09:49.
see passenger numbers fall. With more and more of as letting the | :09:49. | :09:53.
train take the strain we are entering a golden age of rain | :09:53. | :09:56.
travel. But rail operating companies say that the spend per | :09:56. | :10:01.
passenger is actually down, coupled with fuel prices it seemed | :10:02. | :10:05.
inevitable that fares would see an above-inflation rise. | :10:05. | :10:11.
The formula for fare increases has generally been inflation plus one %. | :10:11. | :10:15.
But for the next three years the Department of Transport has decided | :10:15. | :10:20.
that it will be inflation plus three %. With inflation currently | :10:20. | :10:24.
at five %, that means anyone commuting from here to Bristol or | :10:24. | :10:27.
London will see their season-ticket rise by at least eight % from | :10:27. | :10:35.
January. However some services that originate in Wales are regulated | :10:35. | :10:39.
solely by the Welsh government. They are currently negotiating any | :10:39. | :10:46.
fare rises. However the figure they arrive at will only be an average. | :10:47. | :10:49.
The train companies could significantly increase fares on | :10:49. | :10:55.
some services while reducing them on others. A reader will have to | :10:55. | :10:59.
decide whether they have an across- the-board rise -- the company will | :10:59. | :11:09.
:11:09. | :11:12. | ||
have to decide. It is a market decision. The cost of an annual | :11:12. | :11:17.
season ticket could rise by 80. Many passengers say that is not | :11:17. | :11:25.
good value. It is ridiculous. are not doing anything to the train | :11:25. | :11:32.
times for the rail tracks. There are delays. Where is the money | :11:32. | :11:38.
going? It is the rising cost of fuel that has seen many ditch the | :11:38. | :11:42.
car in favour of the train, but trains need diesel to, and now that | :11:42. | :11:48.
rising cost as hitting passengers where it hurts. Ironically, large | :11:48. | :11:54.
pay rises could -- large price rises could tempt people back onto | :11:54. | :11:58.
the roads. It is a delicate matter that the Welsh government is trying | :11:58. | :12:08.
:12:08. | :12:22. | ||
Here in the control room they get all the emergency fire calls for | :12:22. | :12:26.
the whole of the South Wales area. We are talking Monmouth, across the | :12:26. | :12:31.
South Wales Valleys down to Bridgend. A lot of those Cunnane, | :12:31. | :12:38.
hundreds of them, not all of them as genuine. Since January they have | :12:38. | :12:45.
been 1,200 hoax calls. Crews will not be sent to all of them. For to | :12:45. | :12:50.
have resented for calls, crews have been sent out. It is a waste of | :12:50. | :12:56.
resources. 30% of those calls have come in the last two months so many | :12:56. | :12:59.
of them will be schoolchildren making the cost. He may be | :12:59. | :13:02.
surprised that the number of adults making those calls. Cos like this | :13:02. | :13:12.
:13:12. | :13:40. | ||
I am here with Cath Gibbon who is station manager. We can tell it | :13:40. | :13:44.
must be difficult to find out whether they are a hoax calls. How | :13:44. | :13:48.
do work it out? It is down to the skills and experience of the | :13:48. | :13:52.
control staff. Following huge investments in Wales we do have | :13:52. | :13:57.
communication of mobilising systems that can support identification of | :13:57. | :14:03.
malicious callers. We can tell the location of any call on our | :14:03. | :14:06.
operators can compare that to the address they give. It is not fail- | :14:06. | :14:12.
safe but it can help. You can block people's Sim cars. We can contact | :14:12. | :14:16.
the service providers and asked him to cut off any mobile phone use to | :14:16. | :14:26.
make a malicious call. Explain to me the risks involved. In an | :14:26. | :14:29.
emergency every second counts. If we have had to mobilise a fire | :14:29. | :14:34.
engine on a hoax call it means it is not available for a real call. | :14:34. | :14:38.
This means if a call comes in for that area we may have to mobilise | :14:38. | :14:44.
their engine much -- from much further away. Thank you very much. | :14:45. | :14:51.
The campaign has started to date, it is called blood on your hands. | :14:51. | :14:56.
It. Southern Shia amounts of money spent on hoax calls. -- it points | :14:56. | :15:00.
out. A giant letter M, similar to the McDonald's logo, has appeared | :15:00. | :15:03.
on an island owned by TV writer and animal rights campaigner, Carla | :15:03. | :15:08.
Lane. St Tudwal's island off Gwynedd is mostly left as a nature | :15:08. | :15:18.
:15:18. | :15:18. | ||
reserve. BA's spokesman for her said she was aware of it. | :15:18. | :15:21.
A failure in political leadership on Anglesey Council did impact on | :15:21. | :15:25.
the quality of services provided to the public. It is one of the main | :15:25. | :15:27.
conclusions in the first report by independent commissioners appointed | :15:27. | :15:37.
:15:37. | :15:39. | ||
Conflict goes to the heart of Anglesey's history. Edward the | :15:39. | :15:45.
first built this castle. More recently the way the county council | :15:45. | :15:50.
has been run has led to bitter disputes. Described by one of the | :15:50. | :15:55.
Welsh Government's watchdogs as played by a culture of conflict. | :15:56. | :16:00.
Five months ago the local government minister decided that in | :16:00. | :16:06.
fighting amongst councillors had gone long enough. He imposed a | :16:06. | :16:09.
direct a rule through five commissioners. Today's report by | :16:09. | :16:19.
:16:19. | :16:34. | ||
them is the first of the progress It was the politician Nye Bevan who | :16:34. | :16:38.
once said that when people hear the right words, they expect the right | :16:38. | :16:43.
actions to follow. The report makes clear that the councillors are | :16:43. | :16:47.
using the right vocabulary. The jury is out as to whether the right | :16:47. | :16:51.
actions will bear fruit. There is even evidence, says the report, as | :16:51. | :16:55.
some councillors whose behaviour was previously disruptive at | :16:55. | :16:59.
keeping their heads down waiting for the intervention to cease | :16:59. | :17:03.
before starting to cause trouble again. The report makes clear it | :17:03. | :17:07.
will be a while yet before the Welsh Government can end its | :17:07. | :17:12.
intervention in the affairs of this troubled council. | :17:12. | :17:14.
It's been confirmed this evening that the actor, Huw Ceredig, has | :17:14. | :17:17.
died after a long illness. He was 69-years-old. He will be remembered | :17:17. | :17:20.
for playing Reg Harries in the Welsh language soap, Pobol y Cwm. | :17:20. | :17:23.
He also starred in the Swansea based film, Twin Town and countless | :17:23. | :17:26.
television series including Emmerdale and Z Cars. Cemlyn Davies | :17:26. | :17:36.
:17:36. | :17:46. | ||
Huw Ceredig in his most famous role, for 29 years he played the popular | :17:46. | :17:54.
Reg Harries in Pobol y Cwm. His most famous English language | :17:54. | :17:59.
performance came in 1997. He starred as a fatty Lewis in the | :17:59. | :18:09.
:18:09. | :18:14. | ||
film, to in-town. -- Twin Town. Huw Ceredig was born in Ammanford. | :18:14. | :18:23.
He was brother to Dafydd Iwan and Alun Ffred Jones. The introduction | :18:23. | :18:26.
to Huw Ceredig's autobiography says the actor feels he has led many | :18:26. | :18:32.
lives rolled into one. His career entertained many and Healey's | :18:32. | :18:39.
countless fond memories. -- he leaves. | :18:39. | :18:42.
Wales's rugby players now just have six days to impress coach Warren | :18:42. | :18:49.
Gatland before he announces his squad for the World Cup. | :18:49. | :18:51.
Lions stars Lee Byrne, Martyn Williams and Adam Jones have been | :18:51. | :18:54.
handed an opportunity to do just that against Argentina on Saturday. | :18:54. | :19:04.
:19:04. | :19:07. | ||
Gethin Jenkins is a real doubt for He is one of Wales's and generally | :19:07. | :19:10.
world-class players but now there is a major concern that Gethin | :19:10. | :19:13.
Jenkins will be the latest player to be ruled out of the World Cup | :19:13. | :19:18.
through injury. He will miss was's first game against South Africa in | :19:18. | :19:21.
less than four weeks' time and could struggle to play any part of | :19:21. | :19:25.
the tournament if his calf injury does not respond to treatment. | :19:25. | :19:30.
It is a concern to us. He is as frustrated as anyone. He has worked | :19:30. | :19:40.
:19:40. | :19:41. | ||
hard. It has not been -- he has not been able to get himself right. The | :19:41. | :19:48.
hope is he will show signs of improvement and that we will be | :19:48. | :19:52.
able to consider him for other games. With captain Carl Matthew | :19:52. | :19:56.
Rees, ruled out, at least wears can turn to another Lions start, Adam | :19:56. | :20:02.
Jones. -- Wales can. He is one of nine changes to the team that beat | :20:02. | :20:06.
England on Saturday. Martyn Williams will win his 99th cap and | :20:06. | :20:10.
a bit desperate to prove he should be in the World Cup squad. Ryan | :20:10. | :20:17.
Jones will captain Wales for the 28th time. Tavis Knoyle and James | :20:17. | :20:21.
Hook will link up where Lee Byrne and Leigh Halfpenny will be getting | :20:21. | :20:26.
their first starts in the summer warm-ups. | :20:26. | :20:31.
It was a great location at the weekend and I had the feeling the | :20:31. | :20:35.
boys were confident. Does the fact you're not involve was getting. You | :20:36. | :20:39.
have got to make sure enough but the performance on Saturday is | :20:39. | :20:43.
worthy of a win. There is nothing like a victory over England to lift | :20:43. | :20:47.
the spirits and the atmosphere and the Wales camp has been fantastic. | :20:47. | :20:52.
The players have their final chance to press their case for World Cup | :20:52. | :20:55.
selection. The best rate to do that will be to contribute to a winning | :20:55. | :21:00.
performance against Argentina on Swansea City manager Brendan | :21:01. | :21:03.
Rodgers says he's proud of his side's performance despite losing | :21:03. | :21:07.
4-0 on their Premier League debut at Manchester City last night. On | :21:07. | :21:10.
their return to the top flight after a 28 year absence, Swansea | :21:10. | :21:13.
reached half-time without conceding once but they let in four goals in | :21:13. | :21:23.
the second half. We came up against a big opponent, | :21:23. | :21:27.
somebody who is going to be challenging not only for the | :21:27. | :21:32.
Premier League by looking at the European titles as well. For me to | :21:32. | :21:36.
analyse and assist the players and measure them against that, I can't | :21:36. | :21:39.
be nothing but proud of their performance. Glamorgan have signed | :21:39. | :21:42.
Australian batsman Marcus North as their overseas player for the next | :21:42. | :21:44.
two seasons. The 32-year-old has played 21 Tests scoring five | :21:44. | :21:48.

Alviro Petersen. In a week when riots in England have dominated the | :21:57. | :22:00.
headlines, the centenary of how two men were killed during disturbances | :22:00. | :22:04.
in Llanelli is being marked this week. Jack John and Leonard Worsell | :22:04. | :22:08.
were shot dead when soldiers opened fire on a crowd in the town during | :22:08. | :22:17.
the strike by railway workers. Llanelli in 1911 was a boom town. | :22:17. | :22:21.
The centre of tin, steel, copper and coal production. But behind the | :22:21. | :22:26.
industry lay slum housing and appalling poverty. The railway men | :22:26. | :22:29.
were the poorest of the poor. A century ago their struggle for a | :22:29. | :22:34.
living wage lead to the first national railway strike. Police | :22:34. | :22:37.
were sent away to defend bigger towns along the line leaving the | :22:37. | :22:41.
main route from London to Fishguard unguarded. When thousands turned up | :22:41. | :22:50.
to support the striking workers, troops were called in. | :22:50. | :22:55.
Around the railway station you had a crowd estimated to be between | :22:55. | :23:03.
3,000-5,000. The others were people in heavy industry, found the | :23:03. | :23:10.
workers, steelworkers who had come On the afternoon of Saturday 19th | :23:10. | :23:14.
August 1911, the striker stopped a train. The troops lined up along | :23:14. | :23:18.
the track. What happened next is disputed but it is clear volley of | :23:18. | :23:28.
:23:28. | :23:29. | ||
shots were fired and two young men John John and Leonard Worsell were | :23:29. | :23:32.
shot dead even though neither was involved in the disturbance. One of | :23:32. | :23:38.
the men's descendants says the family never talked about it. | :23:38. | :23:43.
I never heard my father mention it at all. The first I remember | :23:43. | :23:47.
hearing about it was when my eldest daughter was in school and they | :23:47. | :23:53.
were doing some local history. I know he was 21 years of age and he | :23:53. | :23:57.
was a tinplate worker. I don't think they were rioters. Thousands | :23:57. | :24:00.
turned out for their funeral and their inquest returned a verdict of | :24:00. | :24:06.
justifiable homicide. Some in the town say there should be an apology. | :24:06. | :24:10.
The town of Llanelli and the families of those people who were | :24:10. | :24:14.
killed deserve an apology at least. The strike was settled the very | :24:14. | :24:17.
same day after talks in London involving Lloyd George but back in | :24:17. | :24:21.
Llanelli the memory of what happened that day still lives on. | :24:21. | :24:24.
And there's more on the Llanelli riots tonight at 10:35pm here on | :24:24. | :24:29.

August. Is there any good news for It is improving as a head into the | :24:37. | :24:41.
weekend. It has been an unsubtle day today. We had the cloud and | :24:41. | :24:45.
rain this morning and then sunny spells this afternoon. Tonight | :24:45. | :24:49.
should be dry with some clear spells developing. One of two | :24:49. | :24:53.
showers lingering and they will fizzle out. Clear skies and light | :24:53. | :24:57.
winds, the perfect recipe for the temperatures to dip into single | :24:57. | :25:04.
figures. Around seven Celsius empowers. 12 degrees along the | :25:04. | :25:09.

tomorrow shows a front pushing up through the day and that will bring | :25:13. | :25:18.
cloud especially for southern parts. It is a case of sunny spells and | :25:18. | :25:23.
the morning but that front will push up from the south. The best of | :25:23. | :25:29.
the sunshine in the north from Anglesey right across to Wrexham. | :25:30. | :25:35.

messy day, a depressing day. A lot of rain and cloud around. | :26:04. | :26:09.
Temperatures at its best, 13 and Wrexham. On the plus side, once we | :26:09. | :26:13.
get through Thursday, Friday is looking much brighter and we will | :26:13. | :26:17.
see dry and bright conditions heading our way. Warm as we head | :26:17. | :26:21.
into the weekend, Saturday was season cloud the Sunday should be | :26:21. | :26:27.
the best day of the weekend and we should seek more sunshine. Make the | :26:27. | :26:30.

that the most senior staff at the News of the World knew much more | :26:58. | :27:04.
about phone hacking that they have admitted. A letter from the paper's | :27:04. | :27:07.
format royal editor says hacking was often discussed at editorial | :27:07. | :27:10.

huge pressure because of the large number of pregnant women who smoke, | :27:15. | :27:18.

been highlighted in a report by Healthcare Inspectorate Wales. | :27:23. | :27:27. |
