Midwives under pressure. The warning tonight as more pregnant

Tributes to a mother of two who died in her tent on a family

holiday. He conned investors out of

Good evening. Midwives are being put under huge pressure because of

the large number of pregnant women who smoke, drink and are obese -

the highest rates in the UK. The problem has been highlighted in a

report by Healthcare Inspectorate Wales. Our Health Correspondent

Arwyn Jones is here with more for us. Iraq 35,000 babies born at

every year in Wales and the Ikea for by a 1,500 midwives. There are

some startling figures regarding pregnant women in Wales. According

to official figures one in five pregnant women continue to smoke

throughout pregnancy. That is the highest rate in the UK. They have

also the highest obesity rates and also the highest drinking great.

Almost half of women in Wales say they drink while they are pregnant.

The government say they have been concerned about this for a while.

According to those who care for expectant mothers these can be

damaging issues. There is an increased risk of women developing

diabetes which can mean that their babies will gain weight. They may

also suffer problems after birth. Smoking reduces the nutrition and

oxygen passed to the baby and cannot result in growth restricted

babies. Some of midwives say they should have a more proactive role

so that they can advise women to make lifestyle choices before they

get pregnant. This is a challenge that government and clinicians are

determined to get to grips Vinny Ness from the Health Care

Inspectorate wrote this report and joins me now.

So how does this problem of obesity, alcohol and smoking impact on the

work of midwives? When women do choose perhaps less than healthy

lifestyles it picks them up under additional risk in pregnancy. They

have more of a tendency towards caesarean sections perhaps. Their

babies require considerable support after birth. All of these things

lead to the mid-life having to have more input through those sort of

difficult times rather than perhaps at the early part.

Presumably its putting mothers and babies' lives at risk? There is

increased risk. Supervisor's of midwives help support Ms Wade's to

look for her innovative ways of helping women to choose more

healthy ways of living. Whether that be asked report from slimming

clubs. There are many reports of good practice across Wales helping

women to address these issues. How can midwives help tackle this

problem? It is about trying to prioritise and being more front

loading. Talking to women before they become pregnant ideally. Young

people in the youth clubs. Help people to adopt a healthier

lifestyle before they become pregnant.

Friends have been paying tribute to a mother of two who died after her

family were overcome by fumes in a tent. Tracy Screen from

Chesterfield in Derbyshire was staying at a campsite near

Caernarfon. Her husband, son and daughter are recovering in hospital.

Police and paramedics were called to the Aberafon camp site at Gyrn

Goch between Pwllheli and Carnarfon yesterday morning. They had been

alerted after others staying at the site had taken the children aged 4

and 7 to safety. 34 year old Tracy Screen, the mother of the two

children, was declared dead at the scene. Her husband was airlifted to

Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor and the children were taken by ambulance.

They're all said to be in a comfortable condition. She was she

was a wonderful and caring wife. She was a friend to many people and

will be deeply missed. Early indications are the family may have

been overcome by fumes in the tent. As yet the results of the post-

mortem have not been released. This is the second tragedy at a

campsite in this region this summer. The Royal Society for the

Prevention of accidents say three people have died from suspected

carbon monoxide poisoning in tents in the past six weeks. Stoves

should not be used indoors. Event matches a dangerous. The dangers of

fires and carbon monoxide are prevalent. People need to use

common sense to reduce their risks. The tent is an indoor space, there

is not the same level of ventilation. Gas appliances are

safe for outdoor use only. Police say they are not treating the death

as suspicious. Hundreds of Welsh jobs could be

under threat following Bank of America's decision to leave the UK

credit card market. The company, which has a site close to the Welsh

border in Chester, employs around 4,000 people, many of whom commute

from North Wales. The company says it will find a solution for

employees as soon as possible. A manhunt has been launched for a

conman who's failed to return to prison. 49 year old Martin Evans

from Pontardulais swindled investors out of thousands of

pounds and in 2006 was jailed for 21 years for dealing drugs and

fraud. Wiltshire Police say he absconded after being released on a

licence. Here's Matt Murray. A former or Welsh businessman of the

year, he took to crime when his business folded in the 1990s. He

swindled investors out of their savings in an ostrich farm scam. He

and his then wife set at the farm up in Swansea in 1996. They

promised investors fantastic returns on their money. They sold

the meat as a healthy alternative to lamb. They conned 115 people out

of nearly �1 million. The investors were on the aware of the scam when

the business for that within six months. Before he came to trial he

fled to Spain with his secretary and business -- and buses to start

a new life. The former her award- winning businessman was convicted

five years ago and was sentenced to 21 years in jail, but police

released him on temporary licence to an address in Swansea for three

days. He was due to return one week ago but has not been seen since.

Anyone with any information is being asked to contact police

immediately. Still to come tonight, we'll have

shot dead when soldiers opened fire. If you travel on the trains

crossing the border between Wales and England expect to pay around 8

% more for your tickets next year. Many travellers say fares are

already too high - and experts are warning further price hikes could

see passenger numbers fall. With more and more of as letting the

train take the strain we are entering a golden age of rain

travel. But rail operating companies say that the spend per

passenger is actually down, coupled with fuel prices it seemed

inevitable that fares would see an above-inflation rise.

The formula for fare increases has generally been inflation plus one %.

But for the next three years the Department of Transport has decided

that it will be inflation plus three %. With inflation currently

at five %, that means anyone commuting from here to Bristol or

London will see their season-ticket rise by at least eight % from

January. However some services that originate in Wales are regulated

solely by the Welsh government. They are currently negotiating any

fare rises. However the figure they arrive at will only be an average.

The train companies could significantly increase fares on

some services while reducing them on others. A reader will have to

decide whether they have an across- the-board rise -- the company will

have to decide. It is a market decision. The cost of an annual

season ticket could rise by �80. Many passengers say that is not

good value. It is ridiculous. are not doing anything to the train

times for the rail tracks. There are delays. Where is the money

going? It is the rising cost of fuel that has seen many ditch the

car in favour of the train, but trains need diesel to, and now that

rising cost as hitting passengers where it hurts. Ironically, large

pay rises could -- large price rises could tempt people back onto

the roads. It is a delicate matter that the Welsh government is trying

Here in the control room they get all the emergency fire calls for

the whole of the South Wales area. We are talking Monmouth, across the

South Wales Valleys down to Bridgend. A lot of those Cunnane,

hundreds of them, not all of them as genuine. Since January they have

been 1,200 hoax calls. Crews will not be sent to all of them. For to

have resented for calls, crews have been sent out. It is a waste of

resources. 30% of those calls have come in the last two months so many

of them will be schoolchildren making the cost. He may be

surprised that the number of adults making those calls. Cos like this

I am here with Cath Gibbon who is station manager. We can tell it

must be difficult to find out whether they are a hoax calls. How

do work it out? It is down to the skills and experience of the

control staff. Following huge investments in Wales we do have

communication of mobilising systems that can support identification of

malicious callers. We can tell the location of any call on our

operators can compare that to the address they give. It is not fail-

safe but it can help. You can block people's Sim cars. We can contact

the service providers and asked him to cut off any mobile phone use to

make a malicious call. Explain to me the risks involved. In an

emergency every second counts. If we have had to mobilise a fire

engine on a hoax call it means it is not available for a real call.

This means if a call comes in for that area we may have to mobilise

their engine much -- from much further away. Thank you very much.

The campaign has started to date, it is called blood on your hands.

It. Southern Shia amounts of money spent on hoax calls. -- it points

out. A giant letter M, similar to the McDonald's logo, has appeared

on an island owned by TV writer and animal rights campaigner, Carla

Lane. St Tudwal's island off Gwynedd is mostly left as a nature

reserve. BA's spokesman for her said she was aware of it.

A failure in political leadership on Anglesey Council did impact on

the quality of services provided to the public. It is one of the main

conclusions in the first report by independent commissioners appointed

Conflict goes to the heart of Anglesey's history. Edward the

has been run has led to bitter disputes. Described by one of the

Welsh Government's watchdogs as played by a culture of conflict.

Five months ago the local government minister decided that in

fighting amongst councillors had gone long enough. He imposed a

direct a rule through five commissioners. Today's report by

them is the first of the progress It was the politician Nye Bevan who

once said that when people hear the right words, they expect the right

actions to follow. The report makes clear that the councillors are

using the right vocabulary. The jury is out as to whether the right

actions will bear fruit. There is even evidence, says the report, as

some councillors whose behaviour was previously disruptive at

keeping their heads down waiting for the intervention to cease

before starting to cause trouble again. The report makes clear it

will be a while yet before the Welsh Government can end its

intervention in the affairs of this troubled council.

It's been confirmed this evening that the actor, Huw Ceredig, has

died after a long illness. He was 69-years-old. He will be remembered

for playing Reg Harries in the Welsh language soap, Pobol y Cwm.

He also starred in the Swansea based film, Twin Town and countless

television series including Emmerdale and Z Cars. Cemlyn Davies

Huw Ceredig in his most famous role, for 29 years he played the popular

Reg Harries in Pobol y Cwm. His most famous English language

performance came in 1997. He starred as a fatty Lewis in the

film, to in-town. -- Twin Town. Huw Ceredig was born in Ammanford.

He was brother to Dafydd Iwan and Alun Ffred Jones. The introduction

to Huw Ceredig's autobiography says the actor feels he has led many

lives rolled into one. His career entertained many and Healey's

countless fond memories. -- he leaves.

Wales's rugby players now just have six days to impress coach Warren

Gatland before he announces his squad for the World Cup.

Lions stars Lee Byrne, Martyn Williams and Adam Jones have been

handed an opportunity to do just that against Argentina on Saturday.

Gethin Jenkins is a real doubt for He is one of Wales's and generally

world-class players but now there is a major concern that Gethin

Jenkins will be the latest player to be ruled out of the World Cup

through injury. He will miss was's first game against South Africa in

less than four weeks' time and could struggle to play any part of

the tournament if his calf injury does not respond to treatment.

their first starts in the summer warm-ups.

It was a great location at the weekend and I had the feeling the

be nothing but proud of their performance. Glamorgan have signed

Australian batsman Marcus North as their overseas player for the next

two seasons. The 32-year-old has played 21 Tests scoring five

centuries including one at the Cardiff Ashes Test two years ago.

He will join the Welsh county in 2012 replacing current skipper,

Alviro Petersen. In a week when riots in England have dominated the

headlines, the centenary of how two men were killed during disturbances

in Llanelli is being marked this week. Jack John and Leonard Worsell

were shot dead when soldiers opened fire on a crowd in the town during

the strike by railway workers. Llanelli in 1911 was a boom town.

The centre of tin, steel, copper and coal production. But behind the

industry lay slum housing and appalling poverty. The railway men

were the poorest of the poor. A century ago their struggle for a

living wage lead to the first national railway strike. Police

were sent away to defend bigger towns along the line leaving the

main route from London to Fishguard unguarded. When thousands turned up

to support the striking workers, troops were called in.

Around the railway station you had a crowd estimated to be between

3,000-5,000. The others were people in heavy industry, found the

workers, steelworkers who had come On the afternoon of Saturday 19th

August 1911, the striker stopped a train. The troops lined up along

the track. What happened next is disputed but it is clear volley of

shots were fired and two young men John John and Leonard Worsell were

shot dead even though neither was involved in the disturbance. One of

the men's descendants says the family never talked about it.

I never heard my father mention it at all. The first I remember

hearing about it was when my eldest daughter was in school and they

were doing some local history. I know he was 21 years of age and he

was a tinplate worker. I don't think they were rioters. Thousands

turned out for their funeral and their inquest returned a verdict of

justifiable homicide. Some in the town say there should be an apology.

The town of Llanelli and the families of those people who were

killed deserve an apology at least. The strike was settled the very

same day after talks in London involving Lloyd George but back in

Llanelli the memory of what happened that day still lives on.

August. Is there any good news for It is improving as a head into the

weekend. It has been an unsubtle day today. We had the cloud and

rain this morning and then sunny spells this afternoon. Tonight

should be dry with some clear spells developing. One of two

showers lingering and they will fizzle out. Clear skies and light

winds, the perfect recipe for the temperatures to dip into single

figures. Around seven Celsius empowers. 12 degrees along the

Pembrokeshire coast. The wind is light. The pressure chance for

tomorrow shows a front pushing up through the day and that will bring

cloud especially for southern parts. It is a case of sunny spells and

the morning but that front will push up from the south. The best of

stay in double figures and ranging between 10-13 degrees Celsius. The

messy day, a depressing day. A lot of rain and cloud around.

get through Thursday, Friday is looking much brighter and we will

see dry and bright conditions heading our way. Warm as we head

the best day of the weekend and we should seek more sunshine. Make the

most of the weekend. It is looking a bit more unsettled for the next
