Welcome to Wales Today. Tonight's headlines: A medical error left | :00:06. | :00:09.
Sophie Tyler paralysed. Three years on, the hospital apologises, and | :00:09. | :00:19.
:00:19. | :00:19. | ||
admits responsibility. I was lying there, wishing it never happened. | :00:19. | :00:25.
Or wishing that they killed me. I had to live with the consequences | :00:25. | :00:35.
:00:35. | :00:40. | ||
Tonight's other headlines: Royal Mail apologies to customers for | :00:40. | :00:45.
missing its first class targets. We'll be asking why the service is | :00:45. | :00:49.
failing to deliver. We're in Finland to see what | :00:49. | :00:57.
lessons Wales can learn from the best schools in the world. We are | :00:57. | :01:00.
placing our teachers and schools under more scrutiny but here in | :01:00. | :01:07.
Finland, nobody is checking. The system depends on trusting her to | :01:07. | :01:10.
do her job. Watch those wing mirrors. Why it's | :01:10. | :01:12.
a squeeze for the new buses touring Conwy. | :01:12. | :01:15.
A final farewell before New Zealand. The Wales World Cup squad line-up | :01:15. | :01:21.
before they leave. It's the last day of summer, the | :01:21. | :01:25.
coolest for many years. But it may turn out to be the driest and | :01:25. | :01:35.
:01:35. | :01:36. | ||
sunniest since 2006. I'll have more later. | :01:36. | :01:38.
A hospital has apologised to a teenager from Risca, near Newport, | :01:38. | :01:41.
three years after she was paralysed from the waist down following an | :01:41. | :01:45.
operation. Sophie Tyler was 14 when she travelled to Birmingham | :01:45. | :01:49.
Children's Hospital for surgery to remove gallstones. An epidural to | :01:49. | :01:52.
control pain after the operation was left in place for too long, | :01:52. | :01:56.
meaning she'll be in a wheelchair for the rest of her life. Nicola | :01:56. | :02:02.
Smith has been to meet her. This is the moment Sophie and her | :02:02. | :02:06.
family say was their "reality check". The moment captured on | :02:06. | :02:09.
digital camera, that they realised how much help she needed just to | :02:09. | :02:14.
sit up in bed. A stark contrast to the girl who loved to dance. This | :02:14. | :02:18.
was taken at a ballroom dancing competition. She often brought | :02:18. | :02:23.
trophies home. Sophie's 17 now. With the help of her mum, Sue, | :02:23. | :02:30.
she's adapted to life in a wheelchair. But it hasn't been easy. | :02:30. | :02:35.
When I first came home, it was oppression. I would not get out of | :02:35. | :02:42.
bed. I was lying there that -- hoping and wishing that it had | :02:42. | :02:48.
never happened. I had to live with the reality and the consequences of | :02:48. | :02:52.
someone else's mistakes. Sophie was 14 when she had surgery to remove | :02:52. | :02:54.
gallstones here at Birmingham Children's Hospital. She was given | :02:54. | :02:57.
an epidural to control the pain, an anaesthetic injected into the spine. | :02:57. | :03:01.
But after two days, both her legs had gone numb. The epidural had | :03:01. | :03:05.
been left in too long. The drug had entered her spinal cord and damaged | :03:05. | :03:14.
the membranes, paralysing her. blamed myself. Even though I knew | :03:14. | :03:22.
it was not my fault, emotionally, I felt so guilty. That was one of the | :03:22. | :03:26.
reasons I felt so depressed. Sophie can sit up on her own now, but | :03:26. | :03:29.
needs help with most other basic tasks. Last year, her family moved | :03:29. | :03:36.
into this specially adapted home. Their old house wasn't suitable. | :03:36. | :03:41.
She did not have a bathroom downstairs. She had to shower in | :03:41. | :03:47.
the kitchen so she had no dignity. We were using one family room as | :03:47. | :03:51.
the only social place we could be. Three years on, the hospital says | :03:51. | :03:54.
"we are deeply sorry for the unimaginable distress we have | :03:54. | :03:56.
caused". They say the care they provided "fell below their usual | :03:56. | :03:59.
high standards", and that they have now "implemented a series of | :03:59. | :04:02.
changes" to try to ensure it doesn't happen again. The admission | :04:02. | :04:11.
of liability paves the way for a possible compensation settlement. | :04:11. | :04:15.
She is 70 Nancy's University has been the big focus but it is the | :04:15. | :04:22.
bigger side of it. She will be able to have support in other foot -- | :04:22. | :04:27.
other forms through pregnancy and into old age. We have to make sure | :04:27. | :04:32.
that patient safety is paramount. Should -- lessons have to be learnt | :04:32. | :04:37.
across the board. If mistakes that this can happen in such a leading | :04:37. | :04:41.
institution, it can happen anywhere. The family have just got back from | :04:41. | :04:44.
holiday. Next week, Sophie returns to school to finish her A-levels. | :04:44. | :04:47.
She's determined not to miss out on life despite the mistake that's | :04:47. | :04:50.
cost her so much. Royal Mail has apologised to its | :04:50. | :04:53.
customers in Wales after figures between April and June of this year | :04:53. | :04:56.
show it missed first class delivery targets in more than half of the | :04:56. | :04:58.
country's postcode areas. Llandrindod Wells, Newport, Deeside | :04:58. | :05:01.
and North West Wales postcodes all fell short of the 91.5% target for | :05:01. | :05:04.
next day delivery of first class mail. The company has blamed a | :05:04. | :05:06.
major modernisation programme, but says figures for the summer show | :05:06. | :05:09.
improvements have been made. Kate Scott-Williams has been to Royal | :05:09. | :05:19.
:05:19. | :05:26. | ||
Mail's sorting office in Cardiff. This is the largest sorting office | :05:26. | :05:30.
in Wales. One fined 5 million pieces of post go through here | :05:30. | :05:40.
:05:40. | :05:42. | ||
every day. -- 1.5. The director for delivery here is Mr Ian Edwards. | :05:42. | :05:49.
This is obviously a bad service for customers. I would like to | :05:49. | :05:54.
apologise to all our customers. We have failed to meet their | :05:54. | :06:02.
expectations. But we are very disappointed because we work very | :06:02. | :06:07.
hard to meet the expectation. The what reasons can you give? Why have | :06:07. | :06:13.
the targets been missed? We are currently going through a major | :06:13. | :06:17.
modernisation programme that affects every facet of what our | :06:17. | :06:21.
people do from the time they get into work, the equipment they use | :06:21. | :06:28.
and the methods they used to deliver the mail. We are working | :06:28. | :06:33.
hard to bed that in as quickly as we can to avoid disruption. | :06:33. | :06:37.
Consumer focus Wales today has said that the modernisation programme | :06:37. | :06:40.
started in April last year and that these problems should have been | :06:40. | :06:49.
dealt with. Last year's service was disrupted significantly by the | :06:49. | :06:53.
weather and the ash cloud and the other factor is that the | :06:53. | :06:57.
modernisation programme is not a short process. It is a three-year | :06:57. | :07:05.
programme about effects everywhere in the country. -- that affects. | :07:05. | :07:11.
Thank you very much. While male say the improvements have already been | :07:11. | :07:17.
made and many of us will be looking closely to see if that is the case. | :07:17. | :07:21.
-- Royal Mail. For the last 10 years, Niz Mhani | :07:21. | :07:26.
has lived and worked in Cardiff as a dentist. But the uprising in his | :07:26. | :07:29.
native Libya has seen him return home and become one of the leading | :07:29. | :07:31.
lights in the rebel campaign. The 30-year-old has suffered death | :07:31. | :07:35.
threats and seen members of his family killed, but he says he felt | :07:35. | :07:38.
compelled to leave the comfort of his life in Wales to join the fight | :07:38. | :07:41.
against Colonel Gaddafi. Niz Mhani, seen here in the grey T- | :07:41. | :07:43.
shirt, distributing food aid to freedom fighters and refugees in | :07:43. | :07:48.
Tripoli yesterday. Today he was in the city's Martyrs square, | :07:48. | :07:52.
celebrating Eid, but Niz is more at home in Cardiff than Libya. The 30- | :07:52. | :07:55.
year-old has spent the last 10 years in the Welsh capital, | :07:55. | :07:59.
latterly working as an oral surgeon in the University Hospital of Wales. | :07:59. | :08:02.
But seven months ago, as the Arab Spring spread to his homeland, he | :08:02. | :08:12.
decided he needed to be part of the freedom movement. I had a real urge | :08:12. | :08:16.
to be a part of my country's history and that is why I came back. | :08:16. | :08:24.
We lost our workers and. He was shot and killed by security forces. | :08:25. | :08:30.
But the sense of history and urgency and need to change things | :08:30. | :08:36.
in Libya is overwhelming. became a real thorn in the side of | :08:36. | :08:39.
the Gaddaffi regime, carrying out very public acts of defiance. Along | :08:39. | :08:42.
with a cousin and two close friends, they formed the Free Generation | :08:42. | :08:45.
Movement. They flew their flag in the skies above Tripoli and posted | :08:45. | :08:47.
their actions on YouTube for the world to see. They staged | :08:48. | :08:50.
demonstrations and even hacked into Libyan government computers, hi- | :08:50. | :08:53.
jacking a satellite system. When Niz was interviewed anonymously two | :08:54. | :08:56.
months ago, he said spreading their message and recruiting followers | :08:56. | :09:06.
:09:06. | :09:07. | ||
was always a risky business. It is about overcoming the hurdle of fear. | :09:07. | :09:12.
We know it is hard to find people you can trust but we have to grasp | :09:12. | :09:17.
the element of blind faith and trust are the people in order to | :09:17. | :09:21.
make this a more integrated approach to activism. Niz was | :09:21. | :09:24.
denounced on Libyan state television as a rat to be found and | :09:24. | :09:27.
hanged. But now, seven months on, this former Cardiff surgeon turned | :09:27. | :09:30.
freedom fighter believes his country has a brighter future. | :09:30. | :09:40.
Still to come. Warren Gatland heads home to New | :09:40. | :09:49.
Zealand for the World Cup. In the past year, report after | :09:49. | :09:52.
report has found that schools in Wales aren't up to scratch. The | :09:52. | :09:54.
Education Minister, Leighton Andrews, said the system was | :09:54. | :09:56.
failing. Criticism came after international tests found our | :09:56. | :10:02.
school children were behind much of the rest of the world. In those | :10:02. | :10:04.
same tests, Finland consistently comes out top. Tonight, in the | :10:04. | :10:06.
first of a two-part series, our education correspondent, Ciaran | :10:06. | :10:09.
Jenkins, is in the capital Helsinki to see what lessons Wales might | :10:09. | :10:19.
:10:19. | :10:25. | ||
learn. Happy Helsinki children. From age | :10:25. | :10:29.
three to seven at they are here to enjoy themselves. Three years ago, | :10:29. | :10:34.
a similar idea was introduced in Wales. Ali and its children | :10:34. | :10:38.
learning through play. But in Finland, they have been doing it | :10:38. | :10:47.
for over a century and it has brought amazing results. | :10:47. | :10:52.
educational system has some features that make it very | :10:52. | :11:00.
remarkable. So what can Wales learned from Finland's education | :11:00. | :11:04.
Medical? From the moment children start proper classes aged seven, | :11:04. | :11:09.
they are taught to be independent. It is an active curriculum and it | :11:09. | :11:16.
is the child in the driving seat. think one of the things that mainly | :11:16. | :11:24.
is not very common in other countries is that when the teachers | :11:24. | :11:32.
check what children have done, they don't do the marking themselves. | :11:32. | :11:41.
The pupils to it themselves. Finland is famous for its results | :11:41. | :11:46.
and the international tests. 15- year-old like these are among the | :11:46. | :11:50.
brightest in the world. They are on average a year and a half more | :11:50. | :11:56.
advanced than pupils of the same age in Wales. I study languages | :11:56. | :12:02.
like German and French and English and Swedish. Then I study finish of | :12:03. | :12:12.
:12:13. | :12:15. | ||
course. How many languages to speak? 3. That is quite impressive. | :12:15. | :12:19.
At this primary school, it is lunchtime and even this has a part | :12:19. | :12:23.
to play in Finland's education success. As you can see, all the | :12:23. | :12:29.
children take their food and we have a three -- a free lunch in | :12:29. | :12:34.
every school in Finland. The one of the distinctive things about | :12:34. | :12:39.
schools in Finland is that every child is treated the same. I think | :12:39. | :12:44.
it is very important. We also have special support if somebody needs | :12:44. | :12:49.
it but generally, the school system is very equal. At as the concern | :12:49. | :12:52.
over standards grows in Wales, we are placing our teachers and | :12:52. | :12:57.
schools under ever more scrutiny. Here in Finland, nobody is really | :12:57. | :13:03.
checking how the teacher is doing. The system depends on her doing her | :13:03. | :13:08.
job. Finnish society values education. People believe there is | :13:08. | :13:13.
no need for the government to intervene. There are no school- | :13:13. | :13:17.
leaving exams and no school inspections. What if Wales were to | :13:17. | :13:25.
try a similar approach? You can't create trust overnight. You must | :13:25. | :13:35.
:13:35. | :13:36. | ||
work hard for it. People must see good result medication and then | :13:36. | :13:41.
they begin to trust. If Finland's education miracle can teach us | :13:41. | :13:47.
anything, it is that our schools reflect our society. Turning both | :13:47. | :13:49.
around will be a long and difficult task. | :13:49. | :13:51.
Professor David Reynolds is a senior education adviser to the | :13:51. | :13:54.
Welsh Government. Lots of questions raised there. First of all, no end | :13:54. | :14:03.
of school exams. How do they measure success? Like they do in | :14:03. | :14:07.
America way you have continuous assessment and you have grades in | :14:07. | :14:10.
the different subjects. If you are going to college or university, the | :14:10. | :14:15.
college would look at your grades and the system would trust the | :14:15. | :14:18.
schools that the standards are the same for the different teachers in | :14:18. | :14:24.
different schools. Here, there is so much emphasis placed on those | :14:24. | :14:30.
exam results. Is it the system we should be switching to? I don't | :14:30. | :14:35.
know because historically, if you look at Finland, they did similar | :14:35. | :14:41.
things to what we do now. They had an inspection system and they had a | :14:41. | :14:46.
national curriculum. But they did these things to make themselves | :14:46. | :14:49.
better like we are trying to do. It would be a mistake probably to get | :14:49. | :14:54.
rid of what we're doing to go their way to quickly because if you have | :14:54. | :15:01.
Trust broken down between a society and its schools, we need to shine | :15:01. | :15:06.
light on the system to find our best people and to benchmark | :15:06. | :15:09.
against them and find our less good people and do something about them. | :15:09. | :15:13.
We are a very different country so can we really aspire to that kind | :15:13. | :15:21.
of model? They are so different. They are middle-class society and | :15:21. | :15:26.
they do not have much disadvantage. But in the long term, one would | :15:26. | :15:31.
aspire to take in the system and take off some of the pressure of | :15:32. | :15:35.
schools. But the system has to get itself right before the pressure | :15:35. | :15:44.
comes off. The pressure comes off On tomorrow night's programme, as | :15:44. | :15:47.
part of their week-long Learning Lessons series, BBC Radio Wales | :15:47. | :15:50.
will be speaking to Professor David Reynolds about how the decline in | :15:50. | :16:00.
:16:00. | :16:01. | ||
Welsh education can be reversed. That's at 7:00pm tomorrow. | :16:01. | :16:04.
Sir Tom Jones has left hospital in Monte Carlo after being admitted at | :16:04. | :16:08.
the weekend with severe dehydration. The 71-year-old had to cancel his | :16:08. | :16:15.
concert in the city. His spokesman said Sir Tom is in very good health | :16:15. | :16:17.
and thanked people for their messages and concern. | :16:17. | :16:20.
HMS Dragon, the latest warship to be affiliated with Cardiff, has | :16:20. | :16:23.
arrived at her home port of Portsmouth. She replaces the last | :16:23. | :16:26.
ship to be twinned with the city, HMS Cardiff, which was | :16:26. | :16:31.
decommissioned six years ago. The warship is one of six new Type 45 | :16:31. | :16:38.
destroyers to be built for the Royal Navy.'s New, larger coaches | :16:38. | :16:40.
are causing problems in Conwy because they're struggling to fit | :16:40. | :16:44.
through the town's medieval walls. Traders say something needs to be | :16:45. | :16:48.
done before the town starts to miss out on vital tourism business. | :16:48. | :16:58.
:16:58. | :16:58. | ||
Chris Dearden reports. Another tight squeeze. Conwy's 13th | :16:58. | :17:07.
century town walls mean that the ways in and out are through arches | :17:07. | :17:10.
like this. Coaches have been getting bigger but the arches have | :17:10. | :17:16.
not. For the visiting coaches, they are unfamiliar with the area. Some | :17:16. | :17:22.
of the Archers are not square to the road. Of course, drivers | :17:23. | :17:28.
nowadays are very concerned about the vehicles. They are larger and | :17:28. | :17:32.
more expensive. Even the most experienced drivers get through | :17:32. | :17:37.
with very little to spare. This is one of the hardest to negotiate but | :17:37. | :17:40.
coaches have to go through it to get to the coach park. Some people | :17:41. | :17:45.
in Conwy while worried it will put tour companies off coming | :17:45. | :17:50.
altogether. We are dependent on the coach drivers being happy to come | :17:50. | :17:53.
to the town. If the coach drivers are not happy, if they think they | :17:54. | :17:58.
will get stuck, they will go somewhere else. For the moment, | :17:58. | :18:01.
they are still coming. The local authority says it is already | :18:01. | :18:06.
working with the coach companies to find a solution. I think we do need | :18:06. | :18:11.
to take a fresh look at what is available. Can we provide sites for | :18:11. | :18:17.
the coaches to drop off and then park outside of town? Whatever | :18:17. | :18:21.
happens, everyone agrees it is not going to be easy. There are plenty | :18:21. | :18:25.
more discussions to take place in the weeks to come. No such travel | :18:25. | :18:28.
problems for the Welsh rugby team today. Here's Claire with tonight's | :18:28. | :18:30.
sport. Good evening. Wales are on their | :18:30. | :18:34.
way to New Zealand, to play in the Rugby World Cup. The 30 man squad | :18:34. | :18:37.
are in the air and after a stop over, they should arrive in | :18:37. | :18:40.
Wellington on Friday. Wales Coach, Warren Gatland said today they know | :18:40. | :18:43.
it's going to be tough but are feeling confident about the next | :18:43. | :18:53.
few weeks. He also said he's very close to knowing his starting 15. | :18:53. | :18:56.
There was just time for a last- minute check that nothing had been | :18:56. | :19:00.
forgotten and with the bags packed and the coach ready, all that was | :19:00. | :19:03.
left to do was grabbed a final farewell and a cuddle with loved | :19:03. | :19:08.
ones. If things go well, the players could be away for six weeks | :19:09. | :19:13.
and they seemed in buoyant mood for the final squad photograph. They | :19:13. | :19:18.
should arrive in New Zealand by Friday. It has been a tough road to | :19:18. | :19:22.
make the squad and this morning, the coach said he has a good idea | :19:22. | :19:29.
of who will start in the first match. We are probably very secure | :19:29. | :19:37.
about a number of positions. But we are not too far away it with what | :19:37. | :19:41.
we have in our mind of the starting 15 for South Africa. The itinerary | :19:41. | :19:45.
for the next month looks like this. The first Test is a week's Sunday. | :19:46. | :19:55.
:19:56. | :19:56. | ||
It is South Africa in Wellington. A design evening kick-off, an early- | :19:56. | :20:06.
:20:06. | :20:09. | ||
The previous six World Cups have been pretty much a mixed bag for | :20:09. | :20:14.
Wales. They have reached two quarter-finals and one semi-final, | :20:14. | :20:21.
that was back in the first year in 1987. What the squad of 2011 can | :20:21. | :20:28.
now achieve, we are about to find out. While the Wales squad head out | :20:28. | :20:31.
to New Zealand, one man left behind Gavin Henson doesn't look like re- | :20:31. | :20:34.
joining his former side, the Ospreys. Director of Coaching, | :20:34. | :20:37.
Scott Johnson met with him last week at Henson's request, but says | :20:37. | :20:47.
:20:47. | :20:48. | ||
he wants players who are focussed on rugby. Gavin is a talented kid. | :20:48. | :20:55.
We are trying to get rugby focused players. He has plenty of external | :20:55. | :21:01.
issues. There's little more than four hours left for deals to be | :21:01. | :21:05.
done on football's transfer deadline day. And it seems Wales | :21:06. | :21:09.
striker Craig Bellamy could be on the verge of a dramatic return to | :21:09. | :21:12.
Liverpool. He's reported to have left the Wales camp this afternoon | :21:12. | :21:16.
to have a medical with the Reds. The Manchester City player has also | :21:16. | :21:19.
been linked with QPR, Stoke and Spurs. | :21:19. | :21:21.
Elsewhere, Cardiff have signed Coventry defender Ben Turner, while | :21:21. | :21:24.
Swansea are closing in on a deal to bring Fulham's Algerian defender | :21:24. | :21:27.
Rafik Halliche to the Liberty Stadium. | :21:27. | :21:32.
Golf and Wales will host the Senior Open Championship in 2014. The | :21:32. | :21:35.
likes of Ian Woosnam and Greg Norman are set to play at Royal | :21:35. | :21:38.
Porthcawl, which will be become the 12th course to host the prestigious | :21:38. | :21:48.
:21:48. | :21:49. | ||
senior tournament. Cricket and Glamorgan looked like | :21:49. | :21:59.
:21:59. | :21:59. | ||
posting a reasonable first-innings And just a reminder, Welsh 400 | :21:59. | :22:02.
metre hurdler Dai Greene goes for gold in the final at the World | :22:02. | :22:05.
Championships tomorrow. The race is scheduled for tomorrow lunchtime, | :22:05. | :22:12.
1:30pm our time. Of course we'll be keeping our fingers crossed. | :22:12. | :22:15.
The search is on for someone to become caretaker of a 120 foot high | :22:15. | :22:21.
Victorian chimney in the middle of Wrexham. It was bought from a | :22:21. | :22:24.
brewery by the former MP and Assembly Member John Marek 21 years | :22:24. | :22:28.
ago, but he now wants to give it away to someone who'll look after | :22:28. | :22:35.
it. Matthew Richards has the story. Built in 1894 as part of the Soames | :22:35. | :22:37.
brewery using distinctive red Ruabon brick, the chimney is a | :22:37. | :22:42.
familiar part of Wrexham's skyline. Now one of the last remnants of | :22:42. | :22:44.
Wrexham's once thriving brewing industry, it was threatened with | :22:44. | :22:48.
demolition in 1990 so the local MP at the time offered to buy it for a | :22:48. | :22:58.
:22:58. | :22:58. | ||
pound. But now he feels it's time to hand over the keys. You will | :22:58. | :23:04.
need someone interested in heritage. You could form a trust. You could | :23:04. | :23:08.
then ask for money and I am sure that the public in Wrexham would | :23:08. | :23:13.
contribute. This could all be done but my time is up. It is for | :23:13. | :23:17.
someone else to start this. Marek says if Wrexham Council don't | :23:17. | :23:22.
want it he'll give it to anyone who wants it for nothing. Though they | :23:22. | :23:29.
might have to pay insurance and maintenance costs. Would you want | :23:29. | :23:35.
it? I would not know what to do with it. I think Wrexham council | :23:35. | :23:39.
should take it all the Assembly Government should take it. It is | :23:39. | :23:44.
part of Wrexham added is an important part. They need a red | :23:44. | :23:54.
:23:54. | :23:57. | ||
dragon up on the top and lighted up. Not a bad idea. If you did that -- | :23:57. | :24:06.
if you owned it, you could do that. No takers yet then for a long | :24:06. | :24:16.
:24:16. | :24:18. | ||
Time now for the weather forecast. It has been a mixed summer. | :24:18. | :24:22.
According to the Met Office, this summer has been the Corus across | :24:22. | :24:29.
the UK for 18 years. There are already signs of autumn. Take a | :24:29. | :24:37.
look at these trees. These are all stressed that trees. -- horse | :24:37. | :24:42.
chestnut. It is a similar picture up-and-down the country. Some of | :24:42. | :24:46.
you have had to put the heating on. Temperatures this summer have been | :24:46. | :24:52.
below average but this may come as a surprise, sunshine, we have had | :24:52. | :25:02.
:25:02. | :25:14. | ||
slightly more than usual. Rainfall has been on target. There | :25:14. | :25:21.
will be variations across the country, from place to place. This | :25:21. | :25:29.
summer could turn out to be the driest and the sunniest since 2006. | :25:29. | :25:34.
Looking ahead, tomorrow is the first day of August -- autumn and | :25:34. | :25:40.
it is going to get a little warmer over the next few days. Tonight, | :25:40. | :25:45.
the dry weather is set to continue. Cloud across the country. But where | :25:45. | :25:51.
it does clear, it will turn chilly. Last night, temperatures in parts | :25:51. | :25:58.
of mid-Wales dipped as low as four Celsius. Tomorrow's chart shows | :25:58. | :26:03.
high pressure close to Britain. Low-pressure near Iceland, that is | :26:03. | :26:06.
the remnants of Hurricane Irene, and that will bring us some rain | :26:06. | :26:11.
over the weekend. Tomorrow, drive across the country. There will be | :26:11. | :26:16.
some cloud. Some breaks as well. It will brighten up in places. Some | :26:16. | :26:23.
sunshine. It will be warmer than today. Top temperatures 21 Celsius. | :26:23. | :26:30.
It will feel quite pleasant in the afternoon. Across Neath Port Talbot | :26:30. | :26:40.
:26:40. | :26:46. | ||
tomorrow, a nice day. Temperatures The outlook, more warm-weather on | :26:46. | :26:51.
Friday. Then over the weekend, some rain and showers. Some sunshine as | :26:51. | :26:57.
well and then to Nick -- turning fresher on Sunday. It has not been | :26:57. | :27:01.
a great summer but the first few days of autumn will bring us some | :27:01. | :27:05.
warmer weather and you never know, we may have an Indian summer. You | :27:05. | :27:12.
have to be optimistic! A reminder of the main headline | :27:12. | :27:15.
tonight. A hospital has apologised to a teenager from Risca, near | :27:15. | :27:18.
Newport, three years after she was paralysed from the waist down | :27:18. | :27:21.
following an operation. Sophie Tyler was 14 when she travelled to | :27:21. | :27:25.
Birmingham Children's Hospital for surgery to remove gallstones. An | :27:25. | :27:28. |
