Good evening. A two-year-old boy is in intensive care tonight after | 0:01:17 | 0:01:21
being found in a fountain outside Cardiff City Hall. Police say the | 0:01:21 | 0:01:26
boy had been recovered from the pop -- water by members of the public. | 0:01:26 | 0:01:30
Paramedics had to resuscitate him. Tomos Dafydd has the latest. What | 0:01:30 | 0:01:35
more can you tell us? It is merely four hours since the alarm was | 0:01:35 | 0:01:40
first raised at 2:45pm. In the last few moments I have spoken to the | 0:01:40 | 0:01:44
man who rescued the boy. He did not want to be interviewed on camera | 0:01:44 | 0:01:48
but told me he was walking past and saw the boy motionless and face | 0:01:48 | 0:01:51
down in the water. He jumped in and dragged him from the water and | 0:01:51 | 0:01:56
treated him at the scene. Paramedics then arrived and he was | 0:01:56 | 0:02:00
taken to the University Hospital of Wales along with his family, and | 0:02:00 | 0:02:04
tonight he is in intensive care. This all happened in the heart of | 0:02:04 | 0:02:09
Cardiff city centre, a stone's throw from the Millennium Stadium, | 0:02:09 | 0:02:14
and just near by Cardiff City Hall, where there was a conference | 0:02:14 | 0:02:23
happening, and delegates rushed out from the conference to see what | 0:02:23 | 0:02:25
happened. They told me what they saw earlier this afternoon. I came | 0:02:25 | 0:02:29
out and there was a man who I think had pulled out a little boy it from | 0:02:29 | 0:02:36
the water, and two people were giving him CPR, probably for about | 0:02:36 | 0:02:41
four or five minutes, then someone took over and swapped and they were | 0:02:41 | 0:02:44
then doing CPR again for another three or four minutes, then the | 0:02:44 | 0:02:51
police turned up and got everyone to move back. I was just having a | 0:02:51 | 0:02:56
conversation on my mobile in the lobby, and I heard sirens going and | 0:02:56 | 0:03:03
a lot of commotion. Someone came running out with a defibrillator, | 0:03:03 | 0:03:06
and there was such commotion, they all came running out and I asked | 0:03:06 | 0:03:10
what was going on and is said a body of a child had been found in a | 0:03:10 | 0:03:14
fountain. I was in the exhibition hall when I heard a load of police | 0:03:14 | 0:03:20
cars coming up so I came out to ask what was going on and as I came out, | 0:03:20 | 0:03:23
they were carrying a little boy's body from the pond into the | 0:03:23 | 0:03:30
ambulance. I have been there all afternoon, Jamie, and I would say | 0:03:30 | 0:03:33
the water is around two or three feet deep, and there are | 0:03:34 | 0:03:38
unconfirmed reports tonight that the family of the boy were around - | 0:03:38 | 0:03:41
- at a nearby police station at the time reporting the boy missing. | 0:03:41 | 0:03:44
These reports are unconfirmed. It is worth reporting that police say | 0:03:44 | 0:03:49
there are no suspicious circumstances relating to this case. | 0:03:49 | 0:03:53
Investigations are ongoing and the boy it remains in intensive care | 0:03:53 | 0:03:59
tonight. Thank you. We may return to you if there are further | 0:03:59 | 0:04:03
developments. It is one of Wales's biggest | 0:04:03 | 0:04:08
employers with around 7500 staff, but Tata Steel has told us tonight | 0:04:08 | 0:04:12
it is seriously concerned about our economy. The company says it is | 0:04:12 | 0:04:17
halting production for a week at its Trostre tinplate works at her | 0:04:17 | 0:04:24
nephew next month. Nick Servini is there. -- at Llanelli. The twists | 0:04:24 | 0:04:28
and turns of the steel industry in Wales are always important. It | 0:04:28 | 0:04:32
still employs thousands of people. Hundreds work of this part behind | 0:04:32 | 0:04:35
me but there are two things up work today. For complex reasons there | 0:04:35 | 0:04:39
has been a drop in demand for tinplate and packaging, the kind of | 0:04:39 | 0:04:43
thing made here -- tinplate its packaging. As a result, this plant | 0:04:43 | 0:04:48
is making adjustments. More broadly, a spokesman for Tata has told me | 0:04:48 | 0:04:52
that the company has serious concerns about the bottom line for | 0:04:52 | 0:04:59
all its plants, not just here but right across Wales. Tata is calling | 0:04:59 | 0:05:02
it a pause in production at the Trostre tinplate works. There will | 0:05:02 | 0:05:06
be no job losses or lay-offs but a significant drop in demand means | 0:05:06 | 0:05:10
that next month there will be no production for one week. Everyone | 0:05:10 | 0:05:15
here is aware of the fall in business. The workforce is | 0:05:15 | 0:05:20
disappointed that there will be a stop week, but we realise that with | 0:05:20 | 0:05:24
fluctuations in the market, the company needs to do what it needs | 0:05:24 | 0:05:30
to do to get by. I don't think we are too bothered. If it needs to be | 0:05:30 | 0:05:38
done it needs to be done. Trostre is the last tinplate works in the | 0:05:38 | 0:05:44
UK. The its core products are sold to tinned food manufacturers like | 0:05:44 | 0:05:47
Heinz. The problem now is an oversupply and stock rooms being | 0:05:48 | 0:05:52
full. Faced with a market like this, union officials have broadly | 0:05:52 | 0:05:58
supported the measure. Everyone is disappointed, but as we said we are | 0:05:58 | 0:06:01
flexible workforce here, and my mum does understand the pressures. We | 0:06:01 | 0:06:06
are pretty and the -- we are pretty upbeat. -- My members understand | 0:06:06 | 0:06:12
the pressure. We know we have a future here, but we are just taking | 0:06:12 | 0:06:16
a week out. Also today, Tata gave the serious warning about the | 0:06:16 | 0:06:20
market conditions for its other plants across Wales. A spokesman at | 0:06:20 | 0:06:23
Port Talbot said the indicators were very worrying, and the company | 0:06:24 | 0:06:28
had been weathering a prolonged storms. These conditions are being | 0:06:28 | 0:06:33
experienced by many in the industry. Demand is not strong. Manufacturing | 0:06:33 | 0:06:39
is not very strong. The key demand markets and construction is the | 0:06:39 | 0:06:42
driver of still demand and are still very weak in Europe and the | 0:06:42 | 0:06:47
USA as well. -- steel demand. Automotive has had negative growth | 0:06:47 | 0:06:51
recently as well. There are reasons an economy which will affect | 0:06:51 | 0:06:56
steelworks. But there have been positive signs for steel. Sales of | 0:06:56 | 0:07:00
high-value vehicles in the car industry are said to be encouraging, | 0:07:00 | 0:07:03
and as a result the Ford engine plant in Bridgend is performing | 0:07:03 | 0:07:07
well. But construction levels are still low with a housing survey out | 0:07:07 | 0:07:11
today for Wales from the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors | 0:07:11 | 0:07:15
finding that the market remains subdued. The weak recovery is | 0:07:15 | 0:07:20
causing concern for many, and it appears the steel industry is no | 0:07:20 | 0:07:27
exception. The other thing to say, Jamie, is that as we found in the | 0:07:27 | 0:07:30
recession, the important thing about the steel industry is that it | 0:07:30 | 0:07:34
acts as such a good barometer for what is happening in the rest of | 0:07:34 | 0:07:38
the economy. So much of the steel made, less so in this part but | 0:07:38 | 0:07:41
perhaps in places like Port Talbot, ends up in such a diverse range of | 0:07:41 | 0:07:46
goods that we all buy on the High Street. One final point macro is | 0:07:46 | 0:07:50
that Tata was pretty critical about the UK government's environmental | 0:07:51 | 0:07:53
regulations but it brought in in the spring, saying they could harm | 0:07:53 | 0:07:58
the company. This is the first time in Wales at least that it has | 0:07:58 | 0:08:04
spoken so openly about the concerns it has for the general state of the | 0:08:04 | 0:08:08
economic recovery. We will talk again and a few moments, Nick, but | 0:08:08 | 0:08:12
we are hearing concerns from big business, but small Welsh | 0:08:12 | 0:08:15
businesses will meet today with some of the UK's big banks. They | 0:08:15 | 0:08:19
have been accused of preventing companies from growing by failing | 0:08:19 | 0:08:24
to lend to them. Jenny Rees reports. Thousands of planes fly in and out | 0:08:24 | 0:08:27
of the UK every year and they rely on an army of engineers to keep | 0:08:27 | 0:08:31
them running. As well as this firm in Cardiff, which is developing a | 0:08:31 | 0:08:35
test it is exporting around the world to test for tiny bugs that | 0:08:35 | 0:08:39
make a home in fuel, clogging up filters and potentially grounding | 0:08:39 | 0:08:45
planes. Edward Hill set up this company nearly 30 years ago and has | 0:08:45 | 0:08:48
picked up a number of awards over the years, but even globally | 0:08:48 | 0:08:54
successful firms need help from banks. Much of the effort directed | 0:08:54 | 0:08:59
to helping companies is directed to helping companies obtain loans. | 0:08:59 | 0:09:03
Successful companies have just as many issues with banking, for | 0:09:03 | 0:09:09
example, exporting companies have issues with exchange rates from | 0:09:09 | 0:09:15
foreign currency and interest on deposits they have to make in | 0:09:15 | 0:09:19
foreign currency. Not much of this has been addressed either by the | 0:09:19 | 0:09:23
government or by the banks. Today he was able to put those concerns | 0:09:23 | 0:09:31
directly to the country's five largest banks. I want to challenge | 0:09:31 | 0:09:35
your comment on why businesses offered abysmal rates on long-term | 0:09:35 | 0:09:41
loans. It concerns me because it smacks of businesses hoarding cash | 0:09:41 | 0:09:45
and keeping it readily available because they are concerned. What we | 0:09:45 | 0:09:51
need to do as a group of business advisers is question why they are | 0:09:51 | 0:09:55
doing it. We need people to come in early with ideas and challenges so | 0:09:55 | 0:09:59
we can work with them to create solutions. It is still a factor. | 0:09:59 | 0:10:06
Many people will share an idea or a challenge long before they will | 0:10:06 | 0:10:10
think about coming to the bank manager for advice. This company | 0:10:10 | 0:10:14
has a good relationship with their bank manager, but the boss is under | 0:10:14 | 0:10:19
no illusion that that could change if they were not doing so well. | 0:10:19 | 0:10:23
think this type of publicity for the banks his lip service. They | 0:10:23 | 0:10:26
will only loan money to businesses who can pay it back, and why | 0:10:26 | 0:10:30
shouldn't they? From Fine Foods to scientific research and development, | 0:10:30 | 0:10:34
firms across Wales are being told work on their relationship with | 0:10:34 | 0:10:38
their bank manager. -- told to work. Small firms trying to get money | 0:10:38 | 0:10:43
from the banks and Tata Steel behind you, their concerns about | 0:10:43 | 0:10:47
the economy, some up if you will, the mood of Welsh business for us | 0:10:48 | 0:10:54
tonight. I think with these two stories tonight, we have touched on | 0:10:54 | 0:10:58
the two biggest issues facing businesses across Wales. There is | 0:10:58 | 0:11:02
the issue of consumer confidence, and the jury is still very much out | 0:11:02 | 0:11:06
on that, and then for small and medium-sized companies, the crucial | 0:11:06 | 0:11:11
relationship with the bank manager, and the stand-off is still existing. | 0:11:11 | 0:11:14
The company say the banks are not supporting them and the banks are | 0:11:14 | 0:11:18
responding by saying that demand is not there for loans. I would say | 0:11:18 | 0:11:25
that there is certainly a trend emerging, and the challenge is huge | 0:11:25 | 0:11:28
multinational company faces in an operation like this is very similar | 0:11:28 | 0:11:32
to the kind of challenge someone would face running a small shop | 0:11:32 | 0:11:37
nearby in Llanelli. Companies are paying much more for their raw- | 0:11:37 | 0:11:40
material so with huge increases in energy costs and other raw | 0:11:40 | 0:11:44
materials, and yet they cannot necessarily pass on that cost to | 0:11:44 | 0:11:49
the customers and the public. As a result, their profit margins are | 0:11:49 | 0:11:53
being squeezed. We do not really know yet what impact that is all | 0:11:53 | 0:11:57
having on the state of the general recovery. We could get some | 0:11:57 | 0:12:02
indication tomorrow with the latest unemployment figures released them. | 0:12:02 | 0:12:08

1 million to help first-time And the helping hand onto the | 0:13:32 | 0:13:35
property ladder comes from the county council. The authority is | 0:13:35 | 0:13:38
offering to act as a guarantor so that mortgage lenders accept a | 0:13:38 | 0:13:41
smaller deposit from house buyers. It's the first scheme of its kind | 0:13:42 | 0:13:51
in Wales. 37-year-old Gareth Jones, from | 0:13:51 | 0:13:55
Llansannan near Abergele, is looking for a home to call his own. | 0:13:55 | 0:13:59
He is training to be a teacher, and is living with his parents while he | 0:13:59 | 0:14:02
waits for the housing market to become more appealing to first-time | 0:14:02 | 0:14:04
buyers. There are very few mortgages being | 0:14:04 | 0:14:08
given to first-time buyers, and it is hard to get a mortgage. I think | 0:14:08 | 0:14:12
you need to save, save, save, above anything else. But what you save at | 0:14:12 | 0:14:14
the moment won't necessarily get too much interest anyway. | 0:14:14 | 0:14:18
Help could be at hand from Conwy Council, which wants to adopt a | 0:14:18 | 0:14:22
scheme already running in parts of England and Scotland: to put up a | 0:14:22 | 0:14:29
guarantee so first-time buyers only to pay a 5% deposit rather than 25%. | 0:14:29 | 0:14:37
Most mortgage lenders will only give a loan of 75%. The council | 0:14:37 | 0:14:41
will now step in and guarantee they will repay any extra if the buyer | 0:14:41 | 0:14:51
0:14:51 | 0:14:52 | ||
defaults. They would then be entitled to a further loan. | 0:14:52 | 0:14:59
Uncertainty is never good for the economy. It will help. It is not a | 0:14:59 | 0:15:03
magic wand, it is relatively small. But anything we can do to stimulate | 0:15:03 | 0:15:06
the housing market is of benefit, rather than doing nothing. | 0:15:06 | 0:15:09
million will sit in the council's bank account, earning interest. | 0:15:09 | 0:15:12
Mortgage lenders will be able to bill the council if customers | 0:15:12 | 0:15:18
risk is low. Estate agents think it will have wider benefits as well. | 0:15:18 | 0:15:22
If we can get the chain moving, it gives work to other people, | 0:15:22 | 0:15:28
builders, painters and decorators. So the whole community will benefit | 0:15:28 | 0:15:31
from having first-time buyers in the market. It will get everything | 0:15:31 | 0:15:35
moving, then the money will start coming back into the area. | 0:15:35 | 0:15:39
The hunt for the perfect property is rarely easy for newcomers. But, | 0:15:39 | 0:15:42
with the council sharing the financial risks, it could become | 0:15:42 | 0:15:52
0:15:52 | 0:15:55 | ||
simpler. A school strike is looming. The | 0:15:55 | 0:15:59
Welsh teacher's union UCAC has voted to hold a one day walk out | 0:15:59 | 0:16:02
over cuts to public sector pensions. They made the decision to hold the | 0:16:02 | 0:16:06
ballot back in May, and over 3,000 members voted nearly 90% in favour | 0:16:06 | 0:16:09
of the action. The strike will take place on October 5th. | 0:16:09 | 0:16:12
Sticking with education, a good report today for the Foundation | 0:16:12 | 0:16:15
Phase. This is the new teaching method where young children learn | 0:16:15 | 0:16:18
through play. Inspectors said most five and six years olds were | 0:16:18 | 0:16:21
"achieving well" under the new system. But they warned a minority | 0:16:21 | 0:16:24
of schools still don't understand the Foundation Phase, and some | 0:16:24 | 0:16:33
teaching staff aren't convinced. Rhodri Lewis reports. | 0:16:33 | 0:16:36
The 30-strong reception class at Ysgol Iolo Morganwg near Cowbridge | 0:16:36 | 0:16:39
this afternoon. Some of them inside, others outside. That's what the | 0:16:39 | 0:16:41
Foundation Phase is all about. Conventional teaching methods take | 0:16:41 | 0:16:46
a back seat. The children are meant to be learning through doing things | 0:16:46 | 0:16:56
0:16:56 | 0:16:57 | ||
for themselves. The children come in with anything on a day. Somebody | 0:16:57 | 0:17:02
brought in leaves, so we talked about autumn. So you are ready to | 0:17:02 | 0:17:07
go with the child's initiative. Every charge between three and | 0:17:07 | 0:17:11
seven at a church or local authority school in Wales is now | 0:17:11 | 0:17:16
taking part in the Foundation Phase. It is expensive with one member of | 0:17:16 | 0:17:20
staff for eight pupils. Ministers believe this investment will pay | 0:17:20 | 0:17:23
off in the years to come. The report from Estyn looked at schools | 0:17:23 | 0:17:26
all over Wales. It found the Foundation Phase was having a | 0:17:26 | 0:17:29
positive impact in most of them, and that children were achieving | 0:17:29 | 0:17:34
well. It said boys in particular were benefiting from more active | 0:17:34 | 0:17:37
learning, including being outdoors. But it also found a minority of | 0:17:37 | 0:17:40
schools didn't yet understand what the Foundation Phase was meant to | 0:17:40 | 0:17:48
be, and that some teachers didn't rate its educational value. There | 0:17:49 | 0:17:56
were a minority of schools who were not fully understanding the | 0:17:56 | 0:18:00
Foundation Phase philosophy. And therefore there wasn't that | 0:18:00 | 0:18:03
appropriate balance between practitioners earn lead and charred | 0:18:03 | 0:18:10
initiated learning. This isn't a play curriculum, it is essentially | 0:18:10 | 0:18:14
children learn by activities, new skills by doing different | 0:18:14 | 0:18:19
activities. That is directed by a trained adults who explains and | 0:18:19 | 0:18:23
developed their skills by doing something. Though this report is | 0:18:23 | 0:18:26
largely positive, it only provides a snapshot of what's going on. | 0:18:26 | 0:18:29
Critics and supporters of the Foundation Phase will have to wait | 0:18:29 | 0:18:33
until later this academic year for a fuller account of whether or not | 0:18:33 | 0:18:43
0:18:43 | 0:18:49 | ||
this new way of learning is a success. | 0:18:49 | 0:18:52
It's where cricketer Gary Sobers made history, and Swansea famously | 0:18:52 | 0:18:55
beat the Wallabies. St Helens in Swansea, one of our | 0:18:55 | 0:18:57
most famous sporting landmarks, could make way for housing. The | 0:18:57 | 0:19:00
ground is one of 500 potential sites earmarked for development in | 0:19:00 | 0:19:05
the city. St Helen's, 1968, and one of the | 0:19:05 | 0:19:08
greatest cricketing moments of all time. Gary Sobers smashing six | 0:19:08 | 0:19:12
sixes, and guaranteeing his place in the record books. Alan Jones was | 0:19:12 | 0:19:17
fielding that day. More than 40 years on, he says he doesn't want | 0:19:17 | 0:19:21
to see the ground go. When I hear that Swansea Council | 0:19:21 | 0:19:31
0:19:31 | 0:19:34 | ||
are thinking of selling St Helen's, it breaks my heart. And it will | 0:19:34 | 0:19:37
break the heart, I am sure, of many Glamorgan supporters from the west, | 0:19:38 | 0:19:41
who love to come to St Helen's to watch Glamorgan play. If that | 0:19:41 | 0:19:45
ground is not there anymore for first-class cricket, it will be a | 0:19:45 | 0:19:48
sad day for Glamorgan supporters from this area. The ground, owned | 0:19:48 | 0:19:50
by Swansea Council, is one of several hundred sites being | 0:19:50 | 0:19:54
considered for new housing, shops and schools. The council says plans | 0:19:54 | 0:19:57
are at an early stage, and work to develop sites will not start for | 0:19:58 | 0:20:01
another four years. No decision has been made about the future of St | 0:20:01 | 0:20:04
Helen's. For those who played here, the ground holds special memories. | 0:20:04 | 0:20:07
It is the place where Welsh champions humbled world champions, | 0:20:07 | 0:20:17
0:20:17 | 0:20:17 | ||
with Swansea beating Australia in front of a packed stadium in 1992. | 0:20:17 | 0:20:22
We have already lost the Scarlets' ground. And to lose St Helen's | 0:20:22 | 0:20:27
would be a big blow as well. There was something about St Helen's, for | 0:20:27 | 0:20:37
0:20:37 | 0:20:40 | ||
a person from the Swansea Valley it was special. Something made it | 0:20:40 | 0:20:44
different from the other grounds in the world. Whatever the weather, | 0:20:44 | 0:20:50
the ground was always good. That was something special. There was | 0:20:51 | 0:20:53
some disappointment that Swansea's sporting heritage could disappear. | 0:20:53 | 0:20:57
People in the area have until the end of the month to have their say | 0:20:57 | 0:21:06
about the plans. Athletics World Champion Dai Greene | 0:21:06 | 0:21:10
was given a hero's welcome, as he returned to his training base in | 0:21:10 | 0:21:13
Bath today. Hundreds of students and fellow athletes turned up to | 0:21:13 | 0:21:16
watch a ceremony in his honour at the University sports village, | 0:21:16 | 0:21:22
where he'll now focus on preparing for next year's London Olympics. | 0:21:22 | 0:21:28
And the environment is very professional. Everyone is training | 0:21:28 | 0:21:32
to be the best they can. It is a great atmosphere. | 0:21:32 | 0:21:36
Rugby, and Wales coach Warren Gatland says he won't make too many | 0:21:36 | 0:21:39
changes for the next match in the World Cup against Samoa. Today, the | 0:21:39 | 0:21:43
squad trained at their base on the shores of Lake Taupo, in | 0:21:43 | 0:21:45
preparation for Sunday's game in Hamilton. Prop Gethin Jenkins and | 0:21:46 | 0:21:49
fly-half Stephen Jones both took part, and should be in contention | 0:21:49 | 0:21:52
for selection this weekend. If he's picked, Jones will become Wales' | 0:21:52 | 0:22:01
most capped international. At the moment, I am trying to | 0:22:01 | 0:22:03
concentrate on getting back on the pitch. | 0:22:03 | 0:22:07
If I am lucky to get on the pitch and selected, I will be delighted. | 0:22:07 | 0:22:12
And it will be a great achievement. But it is a long way off at the | 0:22:12 | 0:22:22
0:22:22 | 0:22:23 | ||
moment. Cricket, and Dave two of the experimental match at | 0:22:23 | 0:22:32
Canterbury, Glamorgan move on to 113 for two. Rain stopped play for | 0:22:32 | 0:22:37
the moment. The day's action could continue until 9pm. A motorcyclist | 0:22:37 | 0:22:41
from Powys who recently set a world record, travelling the length of | 0:22:41 | 0:22:44
the Americas twice, has been talking about his experience. Nick | 0:22:44 | 0:22:47
Sanders completed his journey from Alaska to Argentina and back again | 0:22:47 | 0:22:52
in less than 50 days. The adventurer, who has previously | 0:22:52 | 0:22:55
travelled the world, filmed much of his journey, and he's shared the | 0:22:55 | 0:22:59
footage with BBC Wales. Cemlyn Davies went to meet him at his home | 0:22:59 | 0:23:04
near Machynlleth. With only two wheels and the trans- | 0:23:04 | 0:23:07
Alaskan pipeline for company, Nick Sanders sets off on his record | 0:23:07 | 0:23:11
setting adventure. The 50,000 mile journey took him through 13 | 0:23:11 | 0:23:18
different countries. Twice. The 53 year old had to contend with | 0:23:18 | 0:23:20
temperatures ranging from 46 degrees centigrade, to below | 0:23:20 | 0:23:29
freezing, as he crossed the Atacama desert and the Andes. It is | 0:23:30 | 0:23:36
freezing cold. I have been up all night. Away from home for weeks. | 0:23:36 | 0:23:41
And, it is hard. Sometimes, it really hurts. And yet, the | 0:23:41 | 0:23:47
wonderful thing about motor biking is it is just brilliant. Nick often | 0:23:47 | 0:23:51
rode for 22 hours a day, stopping only to eat and sleep on his bike. | 0:23:51 | 0:23:55
He finally completed the journey in just under 46 days. Back home in | 0:23:55 | 0:23:58
Abercegir, Nick's already busy writing a book and preparing a DVD | 0:23:58 | 0:24:07
of his journey. I liked the warmer areas, it is | 0:24:07 | 0:24:11
easier to ride a bike. I was looking forward to the Atacama | 0:24:11 | 0:24:19
desert. I know Peru almost better than I know parts of Wales. The | 0:24:19 | 0:24:28
hard bits were in the south and north. South Patagonia, the plateau. | 0:24:28 | 0:24:33
It was difficult. Sheets of ice across the road. Nick, originally | 0:24:33 | 0:24:35
from Manchester, has already travelled around the world seven | 0:24:35 | 0:24:42
times. So what's next for the adventurer? There is always another | 0:24:42 | 0:24:47
journey. No more record-breaking journeys for me. I have plans to | 0:24:47 | 0:24:52
stay more in the area, my children live here. They are Welsh-speaking. | 0:24:52 | 0:24:57
I find it a fantastic place to settle for the rest of my life. | 0:24:57 | 0:25:00
a man who's spent his life travelling the world for a living, | 0:25:00 | 0:25:05
that may be the greatest adventure After a stormy few days, some | 0:25:05 | 0:25:10
respite in the forecast? We've have seen the worst of the | 0:25:10 | 0:25:14
gales for the time being. The wind will ease over the next couple of | 0:25:14 | 0:25:19
days. Falling light on Thursday. So less windy today, but the wind | 0:25:19 | 0:25:23
still strong on some coasts and hills. Up to force 7 on the Lleyn | 0:25:23 | 0:25:28
Peninsula. A gust of 50mph at Capel Curig in Snowdonia. There's been a | 0:25:28 | 0:25:33
few showers around today. Some heavy rain in Mid and South Wales | 0:25:33 | 0:25:37
this morning, followed by brighter skies and some sunshine. Tonight, a | 0:25:37 | 0:25:46
few showers. Tomorrow's chart shows low pressure over Scandinavia. | 0:25:46 | 0:25:49
That's the remains of Hurricane Katia. Closer to home, the wind | 0:25:49 | 0:25:52
lighter with a weak front moving south. Tomorrow morning: dry in the | 0:25:53 | 0:25:56
south. Some bright skies and sunshine in Swansea, Cardiff and | 0:25:56 | 0:26:00
Newport. Dry and bright in Powys and the north east. The north west | 0:26:00 | 0:26:03
is cloudier, with the odd light shower. Most of the country, dry | 0:26:03 | 0:26:07
tomorrow. The best of the sunshine in the south and east. Cloudier in | 0:26:07 | 0:26:10
Snowdonia, with a little rain in the far north later in the | 0:26:10 | 0:26:19
afternoon. Top temperatures, 15 to 18 Celsius. The Tour Of Britain | 0:26:19 | 0:26:21
Cycle Race is well under way. Tomorrow, it's Welshpool to | 0:26:21 | 0:26:24
Caerphilly. Good news, it will be dry, with lighter winds. Thursday | 0:26:25 | 0:26:28
is the best day of the week. Most places dry. Some sunshine and light | 0:26:28 | 0:26:32
winds. Friday may start dry. But rain and showers are on the way. | 0:26:32 | 0:26:35
The weekend is unsettled. Very breezy with sunny intervals and | 0:26:35 | 0:26:41
blustery showers. A few of you braved the leftovers of Hurricane | 0:26:41 | 0:26:44
Katia yesterday. John Mason from Machynlleth took this photo in | 0:26:44 | 0:26:47
Aberystwyth. Mike Davies from Neath ventured into the Brecon Beacons to | 0:26:47 | 0:26:51
see Scwd yr Eira waterfall. And this by Barri Elford. A huge wave | 0:26:51 | 0:26:57
crashing into the Coney Harbour in Porthcawl. You can see more of your | 0:26:57 | 0:27:07
