Welcome to Wales Today. Our top story tonight. The Wests play an | :00:03. | :00:07.
active role in the community. With more of us living longer, will it | :00:07. | :00:16.
be a benefit or burden? We take people shopping, take people to the | :00:16. | :00:20.
hospital. We are very much committed. Friday is basically the | :00:20. | :00:30.
:00:30. | :00:31. | ||
only way we get to ourselves. Tonight's other headlines. A police | :00:31. | :00:34.
inspector who used the internet to try and get others to sexually | :00:34. | :00:42.
abuse children pleads guilty. Plans for Britain's longest coastal | :00:42. | :00:47.
path under threat. Travellers here say it will invade their privacy. | :00:48. | :00:52.
Keeping it local. Milk will be bottled at this former creamery. | :00:52. | :00:56.
The company says it'll cut the miles milk travels on the road. | :00:56. | :00:59.
Gavin Henson's centre of attention. Fans young and old happy he's | :00:59. | :01:09.
:01:09. | :01:12. | ||
signed for the Blues And fit for the heroes of London 2012. The | :01:12. | :01:22.

Royal Mint in Llantrisant starts Good evening. The number of older | :01:26. | :01:29.
people in Wales is set to rise sharply over the next 25 years and | :01:29. | :01:37.
radical changes are needed to deal with it. That's the warning today | :01:37. | :01:41.
from the bodies providing our public services. Overall, the Welsh | :01:41. | :01:44.
population is set to increase by 12% to 3.17 million by the year | :01:44. | :01:50.
2035. But the number of people aged 65 and over is set to increase by | :01:50. | :02:00.
:02:00. | :02:06. | ||
around 306,000, a jump of 55%, during the same period. | :02:06. | :02:10.
As this exhibition at Cardiff's National Museum shows, the boy | :02:10. | :02:14.
operation has seen a few changes over the ages. Earlier this year, | :02:14. | :02:19.
the number of people living Wales topped 3 million for the first time. | :02:19. | :02:23.
Looking to the future and what the figures show is the population will | :02:23. | :02:28.
continue to grow but also, older people, those over 65, are likely | :02:29. | :02:33.
to form a larger part of that population. And that is throwing up | :02:33. | :02:40.
certain issues. As soon as she wakes up, we can give her tea. | :02:40. | :02:45.
couple are both in their eighties. They look after three are also fear | :02:45. | :02:51.
three days a week at their Cardiff home. But that is just the tip of | :02:51. | :02:56.
the iceberg for this couple. They had been involved in volunteering | :02:56. | :03:01.
for nearly 60 years. Friday is the only day that we get to ourselves. | :03:01. | :03:10.
We take people shopping, take people to the hospital. My wife is | :03:10. | :03:19.
a member of the pastoral care team. That means that she visits a lot of | :03:19. | :03:24.
people who are housebound. What kind of challenges does an ageing | :03:24. | :03:30.
population mean for our Health Service? We are likely to meet -- | :03:30. | :03:38.
need more hospital care. That could be difficult. We were maybe | :03:38. | :03:42.
replacing hips once in someone's lifetime, we are now looking at | :03:42. | :03:48.
replacing hips and do restorative surgery multiple times during | :03:48. | :03:53.
people's lives. The same goes for our social services. Care homes may | :03:53. | :03:57.
well be in higher demand which can put a strain on finances. And for | :03:58. | :04:01.
the body representing our local authorities, no change is no longer | :04:01. | :04:08.
an option. We let horrific be large costs fall on to the poorer members | :04:08. | :04:13.
of society. We need a new system of funding of social care. With the | :04:13. | :04:16.
growing age of population, the current situation or not be | :04:16. | :04:20.
sustainable unless we do something radical in the next 10 years. -- | :04:20. | :04:26.
will not. What effect does that have won the money in our pockets? | :04:26. | :04:31.
Living on a fixed income such as a penchant might not always be easy. | :04:32. | :04:37.
-- pension. The money needs to be there. People living on fixed | :04:37. | :04:43.
incomes for longer. People coming into debt into why older age. That | :04:43. | :04:46.
is increasing as well. There are some real challenges in terms of | :04:46. | :04:52.
enabling the people to fulfil their aspirations. Every society evolves. | :04:52. | :05:00.
At the moment, the population of Wales is increasingly ageing. It | :05:00. | :05:05.
provides plenty of challenges. The Welsh government says they are | :05:05. | :05:13.
already planning for our increasing ageing population. They say they | :05:13. | :05:17.
have had a strategy in place since 2003. Earlier I spoke to Ruth Marks, | :05:17. | :05:25.
the Older Person's Commissioner for Wales. Firstly, I would like to say | :05:25. | :05:29.
that the statistics are actually a cause for celebration. It is | :05:29. | :05:36.
absolutely great. We are living longer and in the main, healthier. | :05:36. | :05:39.
The huge contribution that so many older people making communities | :05:39. | :05:43.
right across Wales has to be recognised and acknowledged and | :05:43. | :05:50.
celebrated. The challenges however are for health services and council | :05:50. | :05:54.
services and housing services. Any organisations that provide services | :05:54. | :05:58.
to all the people in communities across Wales. They need to come up | :05:58. | :06:05.
with new ways of meeting increased demand. It is a varied group. You | :06:05. | :06:09.
have people who play end active role in the committee but you have | :06:09. | :06:14.
many other people would need a lot of help and support. How would you | :06:14. | :06:19.
describe the quality of life generally for people in that group? | :06:19. | :06:23.
Age is just a number. There is no such thing as a typical older | :06:23. | :06:29.
person. There are so many different experiences. Older people across | :06:29. | :06:34.
Wales, we have to remember that we have some of the poorest pensioners | :06:34. | :06:39.
in the UK. We have people who experience some of the most chronic | :06:39. | :06:43.
and long-term conditions and also people living with life limiting | :06:43. | :06:47.
illnesses -- illnesses and disabilities as well. It is really | :06:47. | :06:51.
important that housing, health and council services talk with and | :06:51. | :06:57.
listen to all the people to build on their experiences for the new | :06:57. | :07:00.
services that we will meet to provide in the future -- older | :07:00. | :07:05.
people. A number of challenges to come over the years ahead. How are | :07:05. | :07:09.
you going to make sure that older people's voices are here to? We | :07:09. | :07:15.
know that services are being cut across the board. Older people have | :07:15. | :07:18.
to use the opportunities and avenues open to them to make their | :07:18. | :07:23.
voices heard through local groups and Forums but also the people | :07:23. | :07:27.
designing services need to make sure that they reach out and listen | :07:27. | :07:32.
to all the people who may not be members of groups and so on. Older | :07:32. | :07:37.
people's experiences are so diverse. All our experiences are valuable | :07:38. | :07:44.
and valid. It is vital that we engage with older people to design | :07:44. | :07:50.
those services. A police inspector has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to | :07:50. | :07:53.
encourage others to commit a sexual assault on a child under 13. 47- | :07:53. | :07:56.
year-old Geraint Lloyd Evans from Coychurch near Bridgend was serving | :07:56. | :07:58.
with the South Wales force when entered into internet conversation | :07:58. | :08:01.
in a chat room with other paedophiles where he expressed his | :08:01. | :08:05.
interest in performing a sexual act on a child. It's believed to be one | :08:05. | :08:12.
of the first prosecutions of its type in South Wales. Matt Murray is | :08:12. | :08:20.
in our Swansea newsroom. What is it about this prosecution that makes | :08:20. | :08:26.
it so unusual? This is unusual because no actual abuse happened. | :08:26. | :08:31.
Geraint Lloyd Evans pleaded guilty to a charge that in December 2009 | :08:31. | :08:38.
and between March last year, he entered into a conversation on the | :08:38. | :08:44.
internet with Keith bowled. In one exchange between the two men, there | :08:44. | :08:50.
was talk of meeting up in a friend's house. It was roped in the | :08:50. | :08:54.
message, which we had someone young to play with. Geraint Lloyd Evans | :08:54. | :08:58.
replied, that could be an option. He pleaded guilty to all the | :08:58. | :09:08.
:09:08. | :09:08. | ||
options -- charges. The other man is already serving a two-and-a-half | :09:08. | :09:13.
year prison sentence for possession of indecent images. How was Geraint | :09:13. | :09:18.
Lloyd Evans court? He was a police inspector at the time. He was | :09:18. | :09:28.
:09:28. | :09:30. | ||
caught during the investigation. More than 6,000 images and 181 | :09:30. | :09:34.
movie clips of child abuse were found on the computer. During this | :09:34. | :09:39.
investigation, they also found records of internet chat. In these | :09:39. | :09:44.
chaps, they found descriptions of abuse between other paedophiles. In | :09:44. | :09:48.
one of those -- one of those was Geraint Lloyd Evans. Has there been | :09:48. | :09:53.
any response from South Wales Police? In the last hour, they have | :09:53. | :09:57.
just issued a statement. They said that Geraint Lloyd Evans was in a | :09:57. | :10:00.
position of great trust within the committee that he served but that | :10:00. | :10:04.
was breached by his criminal behaviour. His actions are | :10:04. | :10:08.
completely unacceptable, his colleagues feel let down and the | :10:08. | :10:13.
local committees will feel the same way. The men are due to be | :10:13. | :10:17.
sentenced next month. A man who died after its thought he became | :10:17. | :10:20.
trapped under a metal gate in Newport has been named as Ronald | :10:20. | :10:22.
Hayward from Merthyr Tydfil. The 42-year-old died while making an | :10:22. | :10:27.
early delivery to a wholesaler's. Investigations are continuing. | :10:27. | :10:29.
Campaigners in Carmarthen say they concerned about plans to build | :10:29. | :10:34.
flats at the former Priory Hospital. It was opened in 1858 and has been | :10:34. | :10:40.
empty for more than 15 years. Previous plans have been rejected, | :10:40. | :10:43.
but a new application has been put forward to transform the site into | :10:43. | :10:47.
19 flats. Some people living nearby want the | :10:47. | :10:51.
building preserved. The number of people listening to | :10:51. | :10:53.
BBC Radio Wales is going up, according to the latest audience | :10:53. | :11:00.
research figures. 480,000 people now tune into the station each week. | :11:00. | :11:04.
That's an increase of more than 10,000 in the last 12 months. Radio | :11:04. | :11:08.
Cymru's weekly reach is now 138,000. That's 8,000 less than the last | :11:08. | :11:13.
quarter. Plans to create Britain's longest | :11:13. | :11:16.
coastal path may be under threat after a group of travellers said it | :11:16. | :11:20.
would invade their privacy. The 870-mile route along the Welsh | :11:20. | :11:23.
coast is due to be finished next year, but work on a half-mile | :11:23. | :11:26.
stretch near Cardiff, where the travellers live legally, has hit a | :11:26. | :11:36.
:11:36. | :11:38. | ||
stumbling block. Nicola Smith reports. | :11:38. | :11:41.
The beautiful y Bwlch coast attracts hundreds of thousands of | :11:41. | :11:48.
visitors every year -- Welsh coast. Since 2007, work has been under way | :11:48. | :11:53.
to create 870 miles to of interrupted scenic views. To | :11:53. | :11:56.
complete the coastal path, some sections need to be joined up but | :11:56. | :12:00.
in Cardiff, one traveller community says if the path comes too close to | :12:00. | :12:06.
their site, it will invade their privacy. Travellers at this | :12:06. | :12:09.
authorised site say walkers would be able to look right into their | :12:09. | :12:14.
mobile homes. They have rejected offers to build a 16 ft wall | :12:14. | :12:19.
protecting their privacy, saying it would be like living in a prison. | :12:19. | :12:25.
We are not fish in a goldfish bowl, we are human beings. We are just | :12:25. | :12:29.
the same as everyone else. We want to feel safe in our community. We | :12:29. | :12:34.
do not want strangers walking in our back garden. The council says | :12:34. | :12:38.
the chosen route is the most obvious one that -- but that it is | :12:38. | :12:41.
sensitive to the needs of the travellers and it hopes to resolve | :12:41. | :12:49.
the issue soon. The Welsh coastal path will be the first of its kind | :12:49. | :12:54.
in the world. That will appeal to a lot of workers. -- walkers. The was | :12:54. | :12:59.
government says it is confident the path will be opened in schedule -- | :12:59. | :13:04.
on schedule, in time for next summer. Have you ever thought about | :13:04. | :13:08.
where your milk comes from? Almost half of the milk produced in Wales | :13:08. | :13:11.
actually goes to England to be processed. A new dairy in Whitland | :13:11. | :13:15.
is bottling Welsh milk on the site of the former creamery that closed | :13:15. | :13:18.
at the beginning of the 1990s. The Proper Welsh Milk Company say that | :13:18. | :13:21.
they'll cut down on the miles that our milk travels before getting to | :13:21. | :13:28.
our shops. Aled Scourfield reports. At one time, the dairy industry in | :13:28. | :13:32.
Wales was big business. 10 years ago there were 3,500 producers but | :13:32. | :13:39.
now they are less than 2000. Whitland creamery was one of the | :13:39. | :13:46.
victims. 150 jobs were lost in 1994 when the site closed. 49 % of Welsh | :13:46. | :13:50.
milk is now transported in huge tankers across the border to | :13:50. | :13:54.
England to be processed. But this new company based on the old | :13:54. | :13:58.
Whitland creamery site believe they can cut costs for farmers by | :13:58. | :14:04.
processing Welsh milk in Wales. When the Whitland creamery shut, | :14:04. | :14:09.
the price of diesel was less than half what it is today. We have an | :14:09. | :14:13.
extraordinary situation with empty lorries running down from middle | :14:13. | :14:21.
England to pick up mill can take it back to Southampton. -- milk and | :14:21. | :14:31.
:14:31. | :14:32. | ||
take it back to Southampton. This new dairy has cost 1.5 million | :14:32. | :14:35.
initially -- and initially 14 people will be employed here. But | :14:35. | :14:40.
it is hoped that 40 can be employed soon. But they will have to survive | :14:40. | :14:46.
in what is a very competitive market. The company have already | :14:46. | :14:50.
secured a contract to supply 50 Tesco supermarket in Wales. People | :14:50. | :14:53.
within the farming industry say there is an opportunity for smaller | :14:53. | :14:57.
dairies to make their mark. It does not have to go across the border. | :14:57. | :15:06.
The cost of transport, everything, it is an extremely good day for | :15:06. | :15:10.
Whitland. The closure of the creamery in Whitland was a huge | :15:11. | :15:15.
blow to the local economy 17 years ago. Local people are pleased to | :15:15. | :15:19.
see the old site being used again for milk production. For I think it | :15:19. | :15:25.
is a great idea. It is bringing business in and giving people work. | :15:25. | :15:28.
It is fantastic. Local produce, wonderful. The next challenge for | :15:28. | :15:32.
this new company will be to convince local farmers they agree | :15:32. | :15:35.
credible force in what is a cut- throat industry. You're watching | :15:35. | :15:42.
Wales Today. Plenty still to come. Gavin's back playing in Wales. | :15:42. | :15:46.
Henson says he wants to spend the rest of his career at the Blues. | :15:46. | :15:49.
And made in Wales for the Olympic winners of London 2012. We're | :15:50. | :15:57.

This year's Poppy Appeal has been launched, in Llandudno, at a centre | :16:00. | :16:02.
which helps re-habilitate blind and partially sighted servicemen and | :16:02. | :16:07.
women who have been injured or have age-related eye problems. St. | :16:07. | :16:10.
Dunstan's has a new wing paid for by a 2.6 million donation from the | :16:10. | :16:20.
:16:20. | :16:25. | ||
Royal British Legion. I have served and been awarded the | :16:25. | :16:34.
six the year award for Poppy collecting. I started in 1949. I | :16:34. | :16:40.
remember the comradeship that we had during the war. I have enjoyed | :16:40. | :16:44.
every minute of collecting. This year's appeal was launched with the | :16:44. | :16:47.
release of 382 balloons to represent the military personnel | :16:47. | :16:56.
killed in Afghanistan. From tomorrow onwards, out go the people | :16:56. | :17:00.
into the supermarkets and the pubs and knocking on doors trying to get | :17:00. | :17:07.
people to donate money. What is so significant this year is this | :17:07. | :17:11.
project with St Dunstan's, if you go and have a look around the back, | :17:11. | :17:15.
you can see this huge new wing, most people do not see the welfare | :17:15. | :17:25.
:17:25. | :17:25. | ||
that goes on. It is a great facility. The skills that I need to | :17:25. | :17:32.
learn, they will teach me. Cooking and getting back on the computer | :17:32. | :17:36.
and getting independent again. Corporal Glen Edwards from Bagillt | :17:36. | :17:39.
in Flintshire was left blind, partially deaf and lost part of his | :17:39. | :17:42.
arm in an explosion whilst in training. His recovery is down to | :17:42. | :17:48.
public generosity. When I first came home when I was injured, my | :17:48. | :17:55.
balance was not very good. And the Royal British Legion appeal helps | :17:55. | :18:04.
me with the finance. For 90 years, the poppy has remained a poignant | :18:04. | :18:08.
symbol of those who have fallen during conflict but during that | :18:08. | :18:12.
time, the poppy appeal has made it possible for places like this to | :18:12. | :18:14.
ensure that injured servicemen and women can get back on their feet | :18:14. | :18:19.
again. Gavin Henson says he hopes to finish his playing career with | :18:19. | :18:24.
the Blues. He was officially unveiled today, after signing until | :18:24. | :18:29.
the end of the season. He says he wants to re-claim a place in the | :18:29. | :18:32.
national squad and he says his reality TV career is over. Tomos | :18:32. | :18:42.
Dafydd has been to meet him. He is one of the most recognisable | :18:42. | :18:46.
faces in rugby. Gavin Henson is back playing in Wales, trying to | :18:46. | :18:52.
kick-start his faltering career. would love for it to be my last | :18:52. | :18:59.
club. It is a trial period, which is fair enough. It is up to me to | :18:59. | :19:06.
prove a couple of points. Hopefully I am settled. It has been an | :19:06. | :19:12.
eventful time for Gavin Henson. French rugby beckon but he soon | :19:12. | :19:20.
fell out of favour. But the Cardiff Blues insisted is the right move | :19:20. | :19:24.
for the region and the player. has gone through a difficult period. | :19:24. | :19:27.
I have no doubt whatsoever that if he had not had the wrist injury, he | :19:27. | :19:31.
would have been playing in New Zealand. I have no doubt that when | :19:31. | :19:35.
he gets unsettled and start playing, he will be knocking on the Welsh | :19:35. | :19:44.
squad door for next season's Six Nations. In recent years, Gavin | :19:44. | :19:53.
Henson has been juggling his television commitments with rugby. | :19:53. | :19:59.
He now says that is all behind him. They have been incredible | :20:00. | :20:05.
experiences but rugby is my thing and I want to get back into that. I | :20:05. | :20:10.
needed my time out of rugby and I did the TV stuff but rugby is my | :20:10. | :20:14.
thing at the moment. Today Gavin Henson has been passing on his | :20:14. | :20:17.
advice to children on a half-term a training camp. Somewhere over the | :20:17. | :20:27.
:20:27. | :20:29. | ||
moon. I thought he was not going to turn up. Obviously, he has. My mum | :20:29. | :20:38.
will be stung when she sees the picture -- stunned. It was really | :20:38. | :20:43.
fun and nice meeting him. Gavin Henson knows he has to prove he is | :20:43. | :20:48.
worthy of a place in the Cardiff Blues side. His ultimate goal, to | :20:48. | :20:52.
return to the bigger stage of all, playing for his country once again. | :20:52. | :20:55.
Now just a reminder, we're looking for nominations for this year's BBC | :20:55. | :20:59.
Wales Unsung Hero Award. Do you know someone who goes out of their | :20:59. | :21:03.
way, to help others in sport? The person has to be 16 years old or | :21:03. | :21:06.
over and not get any financial reward for their efforts. | :21:06. | :21:09.
Nominations close on the 30th October. All the details are on | :21:09. | :21:19.

these websites. They are what the world's best athletes dream of, the | :21:20. | :21:24.
medals which will be awarded at next year's Olympic Games have gone | :21:24. | :21:30.
into production at the Royal Mint in Llantrisant. In total, 4,700 | :21:30. | :21:38.
medals will be made. Let me show you this first of all, | :21:38. | :21:46.
this is the prototype. These are the biggest and heaviest medals for | :21:46. | :21:53.
any Olympic Games. Can you talk us through this one? Yes, this is a | :21:53. | :21:57.
fairly standard design. It is the ancient goddess of victory, | :21:57. | :22:01.
stepping out. It has been on every Olympic medal for the last couple | :22:01. | :22:07.
of games. And then there is the designed 14 logo does London, with | :22:07. | :22:17.
the logo that people are familiar with. Both sides of this mudlark | :22:17. | :22:27.

design. There is Braille for the visually impaired. On this side, we | :22:30. | :22:37.
have a representation of the actual statue, a plaster cast taken, it is | :22:37. | :22:44.
very tactile. Tell us about the process. It is very challenging. A | :22:44. | :22:47.
total of 10 hours from start to finish. That goes through a | :22:47. | :22:55.
striking process, what we call eight kneeling process. That allows | :22:55. | :23:02.
us to form the matter in the way that we want to. Bash metal. There | :23:02. | :23:05.
are a number of different processes to make it look to the quality that | :23:05. | :23:10.
was achieved. Each one takes 10 hours to make and you have to make | :23:10. | :23:17.
4,700 will stop no problem. We have got a very long-standing medals | :23:17. | :23:27.

unit. They make a lot of met at -- military medals. There is a real | :23:30. | :23:39.
sense of wilful man. Everyone is talking about it. -- fulfilment. | :23:39. | :23:43.
There are 274 days to go until the first athletes will get their hands | :23:43. | :23:48.
on these medals, made in Wales. Time now for the you weather | :23:48. | :23:56.
Good news. The rain is on its way out and the sun glasses will come | :23:56. | :24:02.
in handy tomorrow. If you have a barometer, give it a tap. Pressure | :24:02. | :24:07.
is rising and that's a good sign. Tomorrow will be dry and settled | :24:07. | :24:11.
but watch out for mist and fog patches if you're travelling. Now | :24:11. | :24:16.
today most of the rain has been over the West Country and Wales. | :24:16. | :24:19.
Parts of the north and west missed the worst of it but in the south | :24:19. | :24:28.
some heavy rain. 19mm at Usk in Monmouthshire. Just under an inch. | :24:28. | :24:32.
Now this evening light rain in the south and east will move away | :24:32. | :24:35.
leaving the whole country with a dry night. The cloud clearing. A | :24:35. | :24:39.
few mist and fog patches forming and chilly. Temperatures in Mid | :24:39. | :24:43.
Wales falling close to freezing with some ground frost. Tomorrow a | :24:43. | :24:53.
:24:53. | :24:54. | ||
much better day. The whole country dry for a change. Mind you, it will | :24:54. | :25:03.
be a chilly start. Some ground frost. Mist and fog patches as well. | :25:03. | :25:08.
The fog could be dense, especially in the Wye Valley. Otherwise fine | :25:08. | :25:13.
and clear with light winds. During the morning, the mist and fog will | :25:13. | :25:16.
slowly lift but it may linger into the afternoon in the Marches and | :25:16. | :25:25.
the Bristol Channel. Elsewhere fine with lots of sunshine. Top | :25:25. | :25:31.
temperatures 12 or 13 Celsius with light winds. A fresher breeze in | :25:31. | :25:36.
the northwest. In Ceredigion tomorrow, a lovely day. Plenty of | :25:36. | :25:42.
sunshine. Temperatures in Tregaron rising to 13 Celsius. As for the | :25:42. | :25:46.
weekend, more changeable and breezier. A little rain but I can | :25:46. | :25:50.
promise some dry and even bright weather as well. The wind picking | :25:50. | :25:54.
up and turning milder. This October looks like ending on a mild note. | :25:54. | :25:58.
In fact it could be one of the warmest Octobers on record. By the | :25:58. | :26:01.
way, Newport will be holding its first ever food festival this | :26:01. | :26:11.

The headlines. The leaders of the 17 countries that use the euro have | :26:28. | :26:33.
reached a deal they hope will solve the euro-zone debt crisis. Banks | :26:33. | :26:40.
are being asked to write off half of what they lent to Greece. There | :26:40. | :26:43.
may be a case for further increasing the resources of the IMF | :26:43. | :26:46.
to keep pace with the size of the global economy and Britain as a | :26:46. | :26:50.
