Welcome to Wales Today. Tonight's headlines. An independent review | :00:03. | :00:05.
will take place into what went wrong at Singleton Hospital, after | :00:05. | :00:14.
the deaths of two premature babies with E-coli. | :00:14. | :00:21.
I have been assured that the health board and the public health board | :00:21. | :00:26.
have implemented measures as soon as cross-infection was suspected, | :00:26. | :00:36.
:00:36. | :00:39. | ||
to prevent further cases. Also in the programme, Gareth Jones was | :00:39. | :00:46.
killed in a car crash, aged 17. His family is supporting a campaign to | :00:46. | :00:50.
reduce the number of young people killed on our roads. I was in the | :00:50. | :00:55.
mortuary identifying my son and as I was walking in, I remember saying, | :00:55. | :01:02.
please let it not be him. I went in and it was him. Could supervising | :01:02. | :01:07.
new drivers in bad weather and that might help save lives? The farmer | :01:07. | :01:10.
who claims he's being bullied by the company behind plans for a new | :01:10. | :01:12.
nuclear power station over access to his land. | :01:12. | :01:16.
A bust-up in the British cycling team. Nicole Cooke is accused of | :01:16. | :01:21.
riding for herself and not sticking to tactics. And catch it while you | :01:21. | :01:28.
can. What could be the world's fastest can -- car is on display in | :01:28. | :01:32.
Wrexham. The deaths of two premature babies | :01:32. | :01:36.
in an E-coli outbreak is to be subject to an independent review. | :01:36. | :01:39.
Managers at Swansea's Singleton Hospital say they've asked for the | :01:39. | :01:43.
investigation to ensure the infection was dealt with properly. | :01:43. | :01:47.
In all, five cases have been identified. It's expected that | :01:47. | :01:50.
restrictions on new admissions to the maternity unit will be kept in | :01:50. | :01:53.
place until the end of the week. More from our Health Correspondent, | :01:53. | :01:57.
Hywel Griffith. Babies born prematurely are always | :01:57. | :01:59.
vulnerable to infection as their immune system hasn't fully | :01:59. | :02:05.
developed. But what led to an E- coli infection at this neo-natal | :02:05. | :02:09.
unit and the death of two babies is now the subject of two major | :02:09. | :02:14.
investigations. Managers say they've asked for an independent | :02:14. | :02:17.
review to make sure they've taken all reasonable measures to identify | :02:17. | :02:19.
the cause of the cross infection, that the management of the | :02:19. | :02:22.
infections has been effective, and that the ongoing care of mothers | :02:22. | :02:28.
and babies are safe and appropriate. It follows calls for stringent | :02:28. | :02:38.
:02:38. | :02:40. | ||
checks. You really do need to keep up your infection control, look at | :02:40. | :02:46.
wearing gloves, make sure precautions are taken, wash your | :02:46. | :02:50.
hands between every single procedure, even with the same | :02:50. | :02:53.
patient and that there is no cross- contamination between other | :02:53. | :03:01.
healthcare professionals and other staff. The type in -- of E-coli in | :03:01. | :03:05.
these cases is very different to the strain that spread across South | :03:05. | :03:13.
Wales in 2005. That strain is commonly linked to food poisoning. | :03:13. | :03:17.
But this one is much more likely bacteria most of us carry around in | :03:17. | :03:23.
our intestine. The key feature is that they have picked up genes that | :03:23. | :03:26.
make them resistant to antibiotics. That is what can make them | :03:26. | :03:29.
dangerous. And that means anyone without a strong immune system is | :03:29. | :03:35.
at risk. Premature babies have a weakened immune system. They are | :03:35. | :03:40.
mown -- more prone to a range of infections and diseases. The issue | :03:40. | :03:46.
is that this particular type of E- coli is very difficult to treat. | :03:46. | :03:50.
The infection is very difficult to treat. Combined with a weakened | :03:51. | :03:56.
immune system, they are not able to ward off infections, plus the | :03:56. | :04:00.
complexity of it being resistant to antibiotics makes it a serious | :04:00. | :04:10.
:04:10. | :04:11. | ||
issue. Tests have led to five cases being identified. The only person | :04:11. | :04:15.
to have been named is one of the babies, Hope Erin Evans, who died | :04:15. | :04:18.
aged five days old. The outbreak led to urgent questions being asked | :04:18. | :04:22.
at the Welsh Assembly this afternoon. I have been the health | :04:22. | :04:27.
board and public health Wells implemented measures to prevent | :04:28. | :04:33.
further cases. Singleton Hospital University -- a maternity unit | :04:33. | :04:40.
remains close to prematurely born babies. We would discuss the | :04:40. | :04:44.
outcomes and recommendations in due course. Tonight restrictions remain | :04:44. | :04:47.
on accepting prematurely expectant mothers at the hospital. Full term | :04:47. | :04:50.
births are going ahead as usual and a helpline for concerned parents is | :04:50. | :04:54.
still in place. The Prime Minister has paid tribute | :04:54. | :04:56.
to British soldiers killed in Afghanistan, including Lance | :04:56. | :05:00.
Corporal Richard Scanlon from Rhymney near Tredegar. The 31-year- | :05:00. | :05:03.
old, who served in the First Queen's Dragoon Guards, died last | :05:03. | :05:06.
Thursday when his armoured vehicle hit a makeshift bomb in Helmand | :05:06. | :05:16.
:05:16. | :05:16. | ||
province. They were all courageous sold years, | :05:16. | :05:21.
held in the highest regard by their comrades. We'll then a debt of | :05:22. | :05:26.
gratitude and we send our condolences to the families -- we | :05:26. | :05:31.
are with them. With a young person killed every 11 days on our roads, | :05:31. | :05:33.
tougher restrictions are needed on new drivers. That's the call | :05:33. | :05:38.
tonight from the driving safety charity Brake. It comes as a survey | :05:38. | :05:41.
to mark Road Safety Week found nearly 60% of young people fear for | :05:41. | :05:44.
their lives when they are in a car with a new driver. Tomos Dafydd | :05:44. | :05:46.
reports. Gareth Jones was killed on the A55 | :05:46. | :05:51.
near Llanfairpwll in 2006. He lost control of his car on this stretch | :05:51. | :05:54.
of road and went through the central reservation. Gareth was | :05:55. | :06:00.
killed instantly. He was 17. Five years on, his mother's grief | :06:00. | :06:10.
:06:10. | :06:10. | ||
is still raw. I had spoken to him something like 10 minutes before. | :06:10. | :06:15.
The next thing I knew, I was driving home and I was in the | :06:15. | :06:20.
mortuary, identifying my son. As I was walking in, I remember saying, | :06:20. | :06:26.
please let it not be him. I went in and it was him. That was one of the | :06:26. | :06:33.
worst days of my life. I used to get up for school with him and he | :06:33. | :06:37.
used to get up for work at the same time. We used to share in the | :06:37. | :06:40.
bathroom and brush our teeth and just small things like that. It | :06:40. | :06:47.
affects me every day. Small things build-up added get to meet maybe | :06:47. | :06:57.
:06:57. | :06:59. | ||
once a week. -- build up and it get to meet maybe once a week. The | :06:59. | :07:01.
family is joining a new campaign aimed at reducing the number of | :07:01. | :07:04.
young people killed on our roads. One suggestion from road safety | :07:04. | :07:07.
charity Brake is to enforce a minimum length of time learning to | :07:07. | :07:10.
drive. It also wants new drivers supervised in bad weather and at | :07:10. | :07:14.
night for two years after passing. Something that would have a direct | :07:14. | :07:18.
impact on students like these at Coleg Gwent. Today they were the | :07:18. | :07:23.
focus for the road safety message. Beer goggles to show the effects | :07:23. | :07:25.
alcohol can have on people's co- ordination and simulators set-out | :07:25. | :07:31.
the dangers of driving too fast. many people die from card accidents | :07:31. | :07:35.
-- car accidents and careless driving. It shows what can happen | :07:35. | :07:40.
if you're not careful. I think young people, their brains are | :07:40. | :07:44.
still developing and and they do not have the fear factor of | :07:44. | :07:48.
slightly more mature people. They do not feel they will be involved | :07:48. | :07:53.
in an accident and they carry on taking risks. We were reminded of | :07:53. | :07:56.
the dangers of the roads just this morning when a 43-year-old man was | :07:56. | :07:58.
killed on the M4 just outside Cardiff. Today, safety campaigners | :07:58. | :08:01.
focused their message on younger drivers, reminding them of the | :08:01. | :08:03.
responsibility when they get behind the wheel. | :08:03. | :08:06.
A former North Wales Police investigator has been given a | :08:06. | :08:08.
suspended jail sentence after admitting making and possessing | :08:08. | :08:12.
indecent images of children. 45- year-old Ian Williams, a senior | :08:12. | :08:15.
crime scene officer from Anglesey, also admitted causing a child to | :08:15. | :08:21.
engage in sexual activity. The watchdog which investigated called | :08:21. | :08:27.
it a despicable crime. Four people have been arrested as | :08:27. | :08:30.
part of a police investigation into a Deeside letting agency. Eazylet, | :08:30. | :08:33.
based in Shotton, closed in October allegedly owing thousands of pounds | :08:33. | :08:37.
to landlords and tenants. Flintshire's trading standards | :08:37. | :08:39.
department says it received a number of inquiries from people | :08:39. | :08:45.
concerned about their deposits. A funeral in Pembrokshire was | :08:45. | :08:48.
stopped when police asked to check whether the man being buried had | :08:48. | :08:53.
been on the run from them for more than 20 years. Andrew Patterson | :08:53. | :08:56.
fled abroad and created a different identity for himself as Mark | :08:56. | :08:59.
Attwood after being accused of fraud. A tip-off led police to stop | :08:59. | :09:02.
the funeral in Begelly to fingerprint the body, that proved | :09:02. | :09:09.
it was the man they'd been hunting. He's now been buried in a grave | :09:09. | :09:19.
:09:19. | :09:19. | ||
which lists both his names. The company behind plans for a new | :09:19. | :09:22.
nuclear power station at Wylfa on Anglesey has been accused of | :09:22. | :09:26.
attempting to bully a farmer who's refused to sell it his land. | :09:26. | :09:29.
Horizon Nuclear Power says it needs to carry out an ecological survey | :09:29. | :09:32.
in the area. The farmer, Richard Jones, doesn't want the company's | :09:32. | :09:36.
staff on his land. Now, Horizon is threatening to use special access | :09:36. | :09:46.
:09:46. | :09:47. | ||
powers. Here's Roger Pinney. One farming family against big business. | :09:47. | :09:53.
That at least is how this family see it. They have farmed here for | :09:53. | :09:57.
generations and do not see why they should stop now. The family is | :09:57. | :10:04.
already embroiled in a dispute with Horizon Nuclear Power. They want | :10:04. | :10:08.
their land. The company is threatening to use special access | :10:08. | :10:18.
:10:18. | :10:19. | ||
powers. If we give in to this one, then it is only the next step and | :10:19. | :10:27.
that is compulsory purchase. I think it is our right as a human | :10:27. | :10:32.
being that we should not allow this to happen. At the moment, they seem | :10:33. | :10:41.
intent on destroying our heritage. It is not fair. To add insult to | :10:41. | :10:51.
:10:51. | :10:51. | ||
injury, they say, the letter from the electricity company has been | :10:51. | :10:57.
written only in English. The family have replied in Welsh. Politicians | :10:57. | :11:01.
in Anglesey have been quite open in their support for the power station | :11:01. | :11:07.
and they have to make hard choices. Do they support a big multinational | :11:07. | :11:11.
company bullying its way around the island? Do they support local | :11:11. | :11:16.
people? I do not think this will be the only family and a threat. | :11:16. | :11:21.
Horizon Nuclear Power rejects allegations that it is bullying and | :11:21. | :11:24.
insist there is a difference between using Access powers to | :11:24. | :11:28.
carry out a survey and compulsory purchase powers to take ownership | :11:28. | :11:35.
of the land. Something the company Still to come in the programme: | :11:35. | :11:38.
Why there's a call to have this portrait of military hero Sir | :11:38. | :11:48.
Thomas Picton, removed from a It could turn out to be the fastest | :11:48. | :11:51.
thing on four wheels. But for now, the Bloodhound Supersonic Car is | :11:51. | :11:55.
parked up at Glyndwr University in Wrexham. The team behind the next | :11:55. | :11:58.
land-speed record attempt, which involves engineers in Swansea and | :11:58. | :12:02.
Wrexham, is showing off the prototype to young scientists. | :12:02. | :12:12.
:12:12. | :12:14. | ||
Matthew Richards is there. I do not want to spoil the view of this | :12:14. | :12:18.
fantastic car, but they got some incredible statistics to go along | :12:18. | :12:24.
with what would be the finished product. Enough power to power 184 | :12:24. | :12:27.
Charles Breslin cars. It has taken five years to develop and issue | :12:27. | :12:33.
more years until we see the final Test runs. Also, is it -- it is at | :12:33. | :12:37.
a cost of around 10 million. Let's get the low-down from the project | :12:37. | :12:45.
director. Tell us, what is the ultimate aim? This draw, we want to | :12:45. | :12:53.
raise the land screen -- its -- land-speed record. We have got very | :12:53. | :12:58.
select problems in this country. Here rat Glyndwr University, it is | :12:58. | :13:03.
attracting a lot of attention. Is that what you want to do? | :13:03. | :13:06.
Absolutely. Particularly, we want to start right at the primary | :13:06. | :13:13.
schools. We have got nearly 4,800 schools on the programme. We are | :13:13. | :13:18.
coming up to about 2 million kids. It is getting very big. I know you | :13:18. | :13:23.
have got some help you with the rocket powered engine someone at a | :13:23. | :13:27.
secret location in Wrexham. And also at Swansea University have had | :13:27. | :13:31.
to the aerodynamics. There is a great well much influence. Swansea | :13:31. | :13:36.
have done all the Arab dynamics. It has taken the better part of three | :13:36. | :13:43.
years to get this done. We have got a safe design which will not dive. | :13:43. | :13:47.
An enormous amount of work has been down. When could we see this land | :13:48. | :13:52.
speed record? It is getting very serious. We're into the build of | :13:52. | :13:56.
the car. We aim to roll it out in December of next year and after | :13:56. | :14:01.
that we will do UK trials in Britain. After that, we are off to | :14:01. | :14:08.
South Africa, where we have got 300 people clearing the desert. | :14:08. | :14:13.
were involved in the successful attempt. Yes. I was the project | :14:13. | :14:18.
manager then. You want to push many hundreds of miles. This is the last | :14:18. | :14:23.
one. It was very interesting. The idea was formed by the MoD it who | :14:24. | :14:29.
said we have got a big problem in terms of recruiting engineers. What | :14:29. | :14:32.
we went is an iconic project run through the schools. The difficulty | :14:32. | :14:36.
there have been having is that there is not anything interesting | :14:36. | :14:41.
going on in Britain and it is difficult to get people inspired on | :14:41. | :14:45.
technology. As soon as you introduce this car, that does the | :14:45. | :14:50.
business. I will see if I can get a lift home. | :14:50. | :14:53.
The deal to secure the land for Cardigan's new hospital has finally | :14:53. | :14:57.
been made. After years of delay over the site, contracts have now | :14:57. | :15:00.
been exchanged on the land at Bath House, between the owners and Hywel | :15:00. | :15:04.
Dda health board. The sale is expected to be completed in the new | :15:04. | :15:07.
year. Newly-qualified teachers will be | :15:07. | :15:09.
offered the chance to study for a three-year Masters qualification | :15:09. | :15:14.
from next September. The scheme is part of a Welsh Government drive to | :15:14. | :15:18.
raise teaching standards. It says a detailed evaluation will take place | :15:18. | :15:22.
before any decisions are made on making the qualification compulsory. | :15:22. | :15:25.
Professor Alma Harris has been advising the government on the | :15:25. | :15:35.
:15:35. | :15:35. | ||
scheme. This is really adding value to the current training provision. | :15:35. | :15:40.
It is an unique opportunity to upscale the entire profession and | :15:40. | :15:45.
ensure that every young teacher has a real opportunity to have the best | :15:45. | :15:50.
professional training through an injection and then there early | :15:50. | :15:54.
production development. A criminal lawyer has called for a | :15:54. | :15:57.
giant portrait of a military hero to be removed from a crown court. | :15:57. | :16:00.
The picture of Sir Thomas Picton hangs behind the judge's chair in | :16:00. | :16:02.
Carmarthen. But after learning about his cruel colonial past, one | :16:02. | :16:06.
solicitor is now trying to have it returned to the museum which owns | :16:06. | :16:12.
it. Abigail Neal has the story. There's no escaping the name in | :16:12. | :16:18.
these parts. Roads, even schools are named after Sir Thomas Picton. | :16:18. | :16:21.
There's also a prominent memorial here in Carmarthen to pay tribute | :16:21. | :16:25.
to one of Pembrokeshire's most famous sons. A man who rose to | :16:25. | :16:28.
become a general and fought under Wellington at the battle of | :16:28. | :16:31.
Waterloo. He was a very well-respected, rough | :16:31. | :16:41.
:16:41. | :16:41. | ||
and tough man, big burly man. He had military success and that was | :16:41. | :16:45.
what counted, maybe not his personality. | :16:45. | :16:52.
But perhaps it should. 200 years on, is Picton a hero or villain? His | :16:52. | :16:57.
death in battle is how he's feted, but Sir Thomas had a darker side. | :16:57. | :17:00.
It's ironic that his picture hangs in Carmarthen Crown Court because | :17:00. | :17:05.
Picton had his own brush with the law. Famously cruel, while Governor | :17:05. | :17:14.
of Trinidad, he was convicted of torturing a 14-year-old girl. | :17:14. | :17:18.
can make the point that Hitler is an important figure of history, but | :17:18. | :17:23.
one would not want his picture in the court of law. The lawyer is | :17:23. | :17:27.
calling for his picture to be removed. I have had a positive | :17:27. | :17:31.
response from people, who, once they realise what he has done, | :17:31. | :17:36.
aside from his military history, they did not think it was | :17:36. | :17:42.
appropriate. Carmarthenshire museum does not want him back. I think we | :17:42. | :17:49.
have to accept that he was a man, warts-and-all, and not judge him by | :17:49. | :17:53.
a today's standards. Even in his own time, Picton was a | :17:53. | :17:55.
controversial figure. Two centuries on, he's still dividing opinion. | :17:55. | :17:58.
Wales football manager Gary Speed can start planning his bid to reach | :17:58. | :18:02.
the 2014 World Cup in Brazil tonight. Wales now have their | :18:02. | :18:04.
fixture list for the qualification campaign after the countries | :18:04. | :18:08.
hammered out an agreement in Brussels this afternoon. Wales's | :18:08. | :18:12.
first match is at home to Belgium next September. More now from our | :18:12. | :18:21.
sports reporter Ashleigh Crowter. Gary Speed arrived at the Belgian | :18:21. | :18:24.
FA headquarters this afternoon for the first skirmish of the World Cup | :18:24. | :18:30.
qualifiers. Trying to negotiate a fixture list which would best help | :18:30. | :18:34.
as reach Brazil. Also in the room, John Toshack, now the boss of | :18:34. | :18:39.
Macedonia, also looking to get the best deal for his team. Worse will | :18:39. | :18:44.
begin their campaign at home to Belgium. Scotland are also in Group | :18:44. | :18:48.
Bay and the two sides will meet in Wales in October before speed and | :18:48. | :18:52.
his men travel north for their first competitive match. They will | :18:52. | :18:57.
have to wait until September to cross swords with John Toshack, | :18:57. | :19:00.
when the side travel to Macedonia. The return fixture is the following | :19:00. | :19:05.
month. Wales qualification hopes may come down to the final game, | :19:05. | :19:09.
that is a way in Belgium, where the managers that today. I think we | :19:09. | :19:15.
were looking for a big team at home to start. That was good. That | :19:15. | :19:19.
wasn't nailed down early. You will not see John Toshack for quite a | :19:19. | :19:24.
while. I have seen enough of him today. He spoke well and did well. | :19:24. | :19:31.
He has been to a few before. His experience showed. Wales have won | :19:31. | :19:35.
at four of the last five matches. Gary Speed has been clear he wants | :19:36. | :19:40.
to be judged on what happens in the next World Cup campaign. It looks | :19:40. | :19:44.
like an even group and Wales will hope they can keep on improving. | :19:44. | :19:47.
And there's more on that story in Sport Wales at 9:00pm on Friday | :19:47. | :19:51.
night over on BBC Two Wales. Now, with less than a year to go to | :19:51. | :19:54.
the London Games, a row between the reigning Olympic Road Race Champion, | :19:54. | :19:57.
Swansea's Nicole Cooke, and one of her colleagues, is threatening to | :19:57. | :20:00.
undermine the British team's challenge for gold. Cooke has been | :20:00. | :20:03.
accused of riding for herself, rather than the team, after a bust- | :20:03. | :20:05.
up with Lizzie Armistead at the recent World Championships in | :20:05. | :20:11.
Copenhagen. She rode ahead of Armistead to finish fourth, despite | :20:11. | :20:16.
Armistead being the pre-agreed team leader. Well, William Fotheringham | :20:16. | :20:19.
is the cycling columnist for The Guardian newspaper, and joins me | :20:19. | :20:26.
now from Worcester. Are you surprised at that Nicole Cooke has | :20:26. | :20:31.
fallen out with her team-mates? really. You are looking at a | :20:31. | :20:35.
situation where you have got two riders who have one goal. They are | :20:35. | :20:40.
both going through -- for the same thing. Frictions will arise. There | :20:40. | :20:44.
will be, not necessarily conflict, but certainly, a situation where | :20:44. | :20:48.
they are both looking to do the same thing. It is also a situation | :20:48. | :20:53.
where Nicole Cooke has not been in her greatest form since taking the | :20:54. | :20:56.
world championships and Lizzie Armistead is very much the up-and- | :20:56. | :21:01.
coming star. There is going to be an issue of war leads the team. | :21:01. | :21:05.
Talk us through that team dynamic in professional cycling. Is there | :21:05. | :21:10.
anything wrong with Nicole Cooke going for personal glory? If the | :21:10. | :21:14.
agreement is that the team are going to write in a certain way for | :21:14. | :21:17.
a certain right on a certain day, that agreement has to be stuck to. | :21:17. | :21:27.
What happened in Copenhagen was that Nicole Cooke, the agree merger | :21:27. | :21:30.
was the that Lizzie Armistead would be the leader in the final sprint | :21:30. | :21:33.
and the group would go from there, having had a chance earlier in the | :21:33. | :21:38.
race. It is not entirely clear what actually happened at the end of the | :21:38. | :21:46.
race. Nicole Cooke came in in front of Lizzie Armistead. She was held | :21:47. | :21:51.
up by a crash. The agreement was that they would ride together. | :21:51. | :21:57.
can see that you are having some trouble with your microphone there. | :21:57. | :22:03.
We can hear you and we can see it clearly. How is this a row going to | :22:03. | :22:08.
affect Nicole Cooke's chances of defending her Olympic title? What | :22:08. | :22:12.
it means is that there will be that background there. The problem is | :22:12. | :22:16.
that with it being public, the question will be raised of how they | :22:16. | :22:21.
deal with this. It looks as if they're going to do with it behind | :22:21. | :22:31.
closed doors. But obviously, it remains to be seen. Thank you very | :22:31. | :22:33.
much Rugby: | :22:33. | :22:35.
Wales wing, Shane Williams, says he's looking to end his | :22:35. | :22:39.
International career on a high. He'll play his last game against | :22:39. | :22:42.
Australia at the Millennium Stadium a week on Saturday. The 34 year old | :22:42. | :22:45.
says it'll be an emotional match, but acknowledged that it's the | :22:45. | :22:52.
right time to go. If I had a chance to keep on playing rugby and to | :22:52. | :22:56.
live as 50, I would do it, but I would not be very good. It is my | :22:56. | :23:00.
decision. I am quite excited about the day. It would be a great day. | :23:01. | :23:05.
By we have a lot of friends and family there. It will be a great | :23:05. | :23:11.
day to go at on. It would be even better when we beat Australia. | :23:11. | :23:14.
And it's been confirmed this evening that the BBC has agreed an | :23:14. | :23:17.
extension to their current deal to broadcast the Six Nations until | :23:17. | :23:18.
2017. Football: | :23:18. | :23:21.
And Wrexham will face Brentford away in the second round of the FA | :23:21. | :23:24.
Cup after winning their first round replay last night. Cardiff City are | :23:24. | :23:27.
up to third in the Championship after a hard-fought 1-1 draw at | :23:27. | :23:31.
Coventry. Peter Whittingham continued his goal run to make it | :23:31. | :23:41.
:23:41. | :23:46. | ||
seven games without a loss for the Bluebirds. It is feeling a little | :23:46. | :23:50.
There was a frost in places last night, but overall, this autumn has | :23:50. | :24:00.
:24:00. | :24:03. | ||
been mild. Some plants and flowers are confused. Now, over the next | :24:03. | :24:06.
few days, temperatures will be up and down like a yo-yo, but there's | :24:06. | :24:10.
no sign of a big freeze like we had in late November last year. Tonight, | :24:10. | :24:13.
some rain and drizzle in parts of the north and northwest. Elsewhere, | :24:13. | :24:15.
generally dry. A few cloud breaks and no frost. Temperatures well | :24:15. | :24:19.
above freezing. Strong and gusty winds in the northwest. Tomorrow's | :24:19. | :24:22.
chart shows a deep low over the Atlantic with a cold front | :24:22. | :24:25.
approaching Ireland. Ahead of that, mild south-westerly winds. Here's | :24:25. | :24:29.
the picture for 8:00 in the morning. A cloudy, but dry start for much of | :24:29. | :24:32.
the country. Breezy on the Pembrokeshire coast. Strong winds | :24:32. | :24:37.
on the Lleyn Peninsula. The wind lighter in Wrexham with a | :24:37. | :24:43.
temperature of 10 Celsius. During the day, it may brighten up in | :24:43. | :24:48.
places. A little sunshine for a time, but not everywhere. Cloudy in | :24:48. | :24:53.
the west with some drizzle later in the afternoon. Temperatures on the | :24:53. | :24:58.
mild side, 12 or 13 Celsius and breezy. The south-westerly wind | :24:58. | :25:03.
strong to gale force in the north- west with gusts over 50mph. In | :25:04. | :25:09.
Breconshire tomorrow, mostly dry and breezy. It may brighten up for | :25:09. | :25:12.
a while. Temperatures in Talgarth rising to 12 Celsius. Tomorrow | :25:12. | :25:17.
night, a cold front will bring a short spell of heavy rain. This | :25:18. | :25:20.
will clear leaving Friday much brighter and colder with some | :25:20. | :25:28.
sunshine. Just the odd shower. As for the weekend, it's all change | :25:28. | :25:32.
again. Turning milder and windy on Saturday. Some rain on Saturday | :25:32. | :25:38.
night will clear. Sunday is the best day of the weekend. Chilly, | :25:38. | :25:44.
but bright and breezy with a fair amount of sunshine. By the way, | :25:44. | :25:46.
Pontlliw Primary School are having their Christmas Fayre tomorrow | :25:46. | :25:50.
evening. If you're going along, expect plenty of tinsel and some | :25:50. | :25:56.
drizzle. While in Sketty, there's a Christmas tea party at St Paul's | :25:56. | :26:01.
Parish Centre tomorrow afternoon. Everyone is welcome and it should | :26:01. | :26:11.
:26:11. | :26:15. | ||
start dry. We have a beautiful picture this evening from | :26:15. | :26:18.
Denbighshire. Now, it's that time of year again | :26:19. | :26:21.
and we'd like your children's pictures to brighten up the dark | :26:21. | :26:31.
:26:31. | :26:40. | ||
winter evenings. The address to All being well, I hope to start | :26:40. | :26:48.
showing them in December in the run-up to Christmas. | :26:48. | :26:58.
:26:58. | :26:59. | ||
And that is Wales Today. It's coming up to 7:00. The main | :26:59. | :27:02.
headlines from the BBC: Madeleine McCann's parents have been telling | :27:02. | :27:05.
how they felt violated by some of the newspaper reporting of the | :27:05. | :27:07.
search for their missing daughter. Giving evidence to the Leveson | :27:07. | :27:10.
inquiry into press standards, Kate and Gerry McCann said articles | :27:10. | :27:12.
implying that Madeleine was dead hampered attempts to find her. | :27:12. | :27:15.
Running battles have continued on the streets of Cairo for a fourth | :27:15. | :27:17.
day. Egypt's pro-democracy protesters say they'll fight on | :27:17. | :27:20.
against military rule. The deaths of two premature babies | :27:20. | :27:23.
in an e.coli outbreak is to be the subject of an independent review. | :27:23. | :27:26.
Managers at Swansea's Singleton Hospital say they've asked for the | :27:26. | :27:29.
investigation, to ensure the infection was dealt with properly. | :27:29. | :27:37. |
