A warning from the boss of the NHS - patient safety could be | :00:10. | :00:13.
compromised and less controversial hospital reforms go ahead. | :00:13. | :00:18.
At the moment, our services are safe. They are under pressure and | :00:18. | :00:23.
if we do nothing then the situation into a three years could be one we | :00:23. | :00:33.
:00:33. | :00:45. | ||
Aamir Siddiqi was stabbed to death on his doorstep. The jury is | :00:45. | :00:50.
discharged on his murder trial. A professional ballet dancer speaks | :00:50. | :00:53.
about he is -- about how he is rebuilding his life after being | :00:53. | :00:58.
attacked on a night out. And we look to Scotland to see if | :00:58. | :01:04.
the diabetes system there could benefit patients in Wales. | :01:04. | :01:07.
Messages from the front line - how the RAF is using the Internet to | :01:07. | :01:10.
bring families together this Christmas. | :01:10. | :01:18.
And training to defend his title - he leads the field at this year's | :01:18. | :01:24.
Welsh National. The head of the health service has | :01:24. | :01:28.
told BBC Wales that patient safety is under threat unless | :01:28. | :01:33.
controversial hospital reforms are driven through. In his first | :01:33. | :01:38.
interview since becoming Chief Executive, David Sissling denied | :01:38. | :01:42.
cutbacks were behind the reorganisation. He could see some | :01:42. | :01:47.
services moved were downgraded. He spoke to us earlier. | :01:47. | :01:53.
Every bed in every ward, every brick and every building - they all | :01:53. | :02:00.
come under the control of one man in Wales. This is him - top civil | :02:00. | :02:04.
servants rarely step into the media spotlight but David Sissling knows | :02:04. | :02:09.
he has his work cut out convincing people that Welsh hospitals have to | :02:09. | :02:14.
be reorganised. He says that safety is on the line. Our services are | :02:14. | :02:18.
safe at the moment but they are under pressure and if we do nothing | :02:18. | :02:22.
then the situation in two, three, four years might be when we come to | :02:22. | :02:29.
regret. So if changes are not made, safety could be compromised? Safety | :02:29. | :02:33.
could be compromised. That is why we are trying to take the trouble | :02:33. | :02:38.
to set out those pressures. Money, or lack of it, is a big driver to, | :02:38. | :02:48.
isn't it? -- is a big driver, too, isn't it? Yes, but there are issues | :02:48. | :02:54.
of quality and safety. Not so long ago, some of those local | :02:54. | :02:59.
populations rose up and rejected plans to close centralised services. | :02:59. | :03:05.
In 2012, every health board and Wales is expected to put forward | :03:05. | :03:09.
new modernisation proposals. That would make some services more local | :03:09. | :03:14.
and move others further away. In West Wales, they are already having | :03:14. | :03:20.
to grapple with some of those difficult decisions. They have | :03:20. | :03:24.
announced they are making changes to emergency care, cancer care. | :03:24. | :03:31.
They say that, at the moment things are not just safe and sustainable. | :03:31. | :03:34.
The health board describes some of the services as very fragile, | :03:35. | :03:38.
failing to meet clinical guidelines. Their safety is already under | :03:38. | :03:43.
threat. At the moment, we are spreading ourselves thinly in terms | :03:44. | :03:49.
of costs. We want to develop services that are one hospital | :03:49. | :03:53.
across for hospital site. At the moment, the doctors are and buses | :03:53. | :03:58.
work very carefully to mitigate any risks but it is difficult across | :03:58. | :04:05.
for hospital sites. One of those hospitals could have its accident | :04:05. | :04:09.
and emergency downgraded. Campaigners are not convinced by | :04:09. | :04:15.
arguments over safety - they think it is down to cutting costs. How on | :04:15. | :04:19.
Earth can a service become unsafe one day and yet be saved the day | :04:19. | :04:27.
before? It is an attempt to make it unsafe so that it can be moved. | :04:27. | :04:34.
This has been done by set -- by stealth. Finding solutions which | :04:34. | :04:39.
suit everyone will be an impossible task. Health boards say that people | :04:39. | :04:46.
will genuinely part of this decision making process. | :04:46. | :04:50.
The jury in the trial of two men accused of killing a teenager on | :04:50. | :04:57.
his door she doorstep has been discharged. Ben Hope and Jason | :04:57. | :05:00.
Richards denied murdering Aamir Siddiqi and attempting to murder | :05:00. | :05:03.
his parents at their home in Cardiff. | :05:03. | :05:08.
Aamir Siddiqi was stabbed to death on the doorstep of his home in | :05:08. | :05:11.
Cardiff last year. He had gone to answer the door. His mother and | :05:11. | :05:20.
father were also at home. They too were attacked. Ben Hope and Jason | :05:20. | :05:23.
Richards were on trial for the murder of the 17-year-old and the | :05:23. | :05:28.
attempted murder of his parents. They both denied the charges. The | :05:28. | :05:33.
jury has been discharged for legal reasons. South Wales police say the | :05:33. | :05:38.
prosecution will focus on preparing for the retrial and that the force | :05:38. | :05:44.
will continue to support Aamir Siddiqi's family. Int hearing will | :05:44. | :05:51.
take place in February. A former police inspector has been | :05:51. | :05:58.
jailed after being found guilty of conspiring to help others sex abuse | :05:58. | :06:07.
children. Geraint Lloyd Evans was sacked by the force in September. | :06:07. | :06:11.
Four people have been released on bail -- three people have been | :06:11. | :06:17.
released on bail after a farmer was shot in the leg near Gwynedd. Two | :06:17. | :06:22.
guns were stolen as well as cash and jewellery. | :06:22. | :06:25.
And you eat factory making car park is to open in Wrexham, creating | :06:25. | :06:35.
:06:35. | :06:36. | ||
really 50 jobs. -- and new factory., UK has won a contract to supply | :06:36. | :06:38.
Vauxhall and is expanding his business. | :06:38. | :06:45.
These are the first signs of better things to come. Staff will be | :06:45. | :06:50.
working over Christmas to get things ready. It is great news for | :06:50. | :06:53.
Wrexham and the surrounding and b are bucking the trend, considering | :06:53. | :07:00.
the current economic climate. It is a merry Christmas for everybody. A | :07:00. | :07:07.
bright future for Brett -- for Wrexham and Cobra UK. It is | :07:07. | :07:11.
producing everything from sun visors to floors. If you find | :07:11. | :07:14.
yourself driving a Vauxhall and the next few years, there is a good | :07:14. | :07:19.
chance that parts of it will have been made here. They already make | :07:19. | :07:26.
parts for Volvo and Audi. The name on the side may be new but this | :07:26. | :07:31.
factory has made car-parts before. Until four years ago, it was run by | :07:31. | :07:36.
a German film, which moved to Hungary and Romania. -- a German | :07:36. | :07:42.
company. The new factory has had money from the Welsh government to | :07:42. | :07:47.
help it open. Cobra uk says some staff may transfer from Welsh pool. | :07:47. | :07:57.
:07:57. | :08:05. | ||
It is hoping to create more jobs in Wrexham in the near future. | :08:06. | :08:10.
And it is the biggest event on the racing calendar for Wales - the | :08:10. | :08:20.
:08:20. | :08:38. | ||
Welsh National. Nicola Smith reports. We at | :08:38. | :08:48.

Christmas they did not believe would happen. | :08:52. | :09:00.
A man has been charged with an attack on Jack Widdowson. He is now | :09:00. | :09:09.
back on his feet. He feared he would not walk again. I could see | :09:09. | :09:17.
her I had lost my strength. I had to iron out all the bad habit I | :09:17. | :09:27.
:09:27. | :09:29. | ||
used to have and I was dancing. is really important that you | :09:29. | :09:35.
concentrate on your core stability. His father is the head of sports | :09:35. | :09:45.
:09:45. | :09:49. | ||
medicine at Bath Rugby. It is an extraordinary recovery, from the | :09:49. | :09:53.
first couple of weeks to where we are now. We will have a great | :09:53. | :09:59.
Christmas. There is no doubt about that. There are still many long | :09:59. | :10:02.
hours of physiotherapy ahead but he is more determined than ever to | :10:02. | :10:09.
achieve his dream of being a top ballet dancer. I have realised how | :10:09. | :10:16.
much I want it and I will not just let an injury get in the way. | :10:16. | :10:20.
There are claims that Wales is following -- of falling behind in | :10:20. | :10:26.
the management of diabetes. It is because we do not have a computer | :10:27. | :10:32.
system to link doctors and medical records. Scotland, which has had | :10:32. | :10:37.
the system for years, has offered it to Wales for nothing. We report | :10:37. | :10:42.
on the situation north of the border and neck report on his own | :10:42. | :10:47.
battle with diabetes. -- make reports. | :10:47. | :10:50.
Before I was diagnosed with diabetes I was ignorant about the | :10:50. | :10:57.
condition. But over the last six months, I have learned that diet | :10:57. | :11:00.
and exercise can help manage the disease, a disease that is growing | :11:00. | :11:07.
at an alarming level here in Wales. More than 160,000 people have been | :11:07. | :11:11.
diagnosed with tied 1 and type 2 diabetes. The worrying trend is | :11:11. | :11:16.
that these figures are rising annually. This year, there were | :11:16. | :11:22.
more than 7,000 cases compared to last year. 20 new people get | :11:22. | :11:26.
diagnosed with the condition every single day. Despite the trend, many | :11:26. | :11:30.
working within the field of diabetes say we are not tackling it | :11:30. | :11:36.
as well as our near neighbours. Scotland has what people are | :11:36. | :11:41.
calling a diabetes epidemic. Unlike Wales, there is a far more co- | :11:41. | :11:51.
:11:51. | :11:52. | ||
ordinated response to tackling it. We can link information from all | :11:52. | :11:56.
the GPs' surgeries in Scotland with the database, so that we can have | :11:57. | :12:01.
one record for the patience. simple but of these ideas that has | :12:01. | :12:09.
been hugely successful and popular with patients. Ross was diagnosed | :12:09. | :12:14.
with diabetes more than a decade ago. He has be able to manage his | :12:14. | :12:18.
condition far more successfully than any Welsh patient. Self- | :12:18. | :12:22.
managed and with diabetes is so important. Anyone with diabetes | :12:22. | :12:30.
will recognise the phrase, but pressure, cholesterol, ie screening, | :12:30. | :12:40.
all those measurements are on those schemes on the Internet. | :12:40. | :12:42.
Scottish Care Information Diabetes Collaboration is the envy of health | :12:42. | :12:50.
professionals and male -- in Wales. People from Scotland are offering | :12:51. | :12:54.
to come to Wales and talk about Scottish Care Information Diabetes | :12:54. | :12:58.
Collaboration. Do not lift the death up -- do not look the gift | :12:58. | :13:07.
horse in the mouth. We should be taking up Scotland's offer. We are | :13:07. | :13:10.
looking at the Scottish system to see if it could be beneficial to | :13:10. | :13:15.
patients in Wales. When that recommendation is made it is | :13:15. | :13:22.
something I will decide. It is important that people know that | :13:22. | :13:32.
:13:32. | :13:37. | ||
they could change their lifestyle I vowed to quit the life of the | :13:37. | :13:40.
couch potato - exercise more, and eat more healthily. So has the | :13:40. | :13:48.
regime paid off? Just over six months ago, I weighed just over 17 | :13:48. | :13:58.
:13:58. | :14:06. | ||
stone. At Les see how much I weigh. That is almost one stone and a. -- | :14:06. | :14:10.
and a half. But it's not just about weight. When I visited the doctor | :14:10. | :14:13.
six months ago my blood tests showed glucose levels that were | :14:13. | :14:16.
relatively high - it's this HBA 1C level that indicates how well i'm | :14:16. | :14:25.
managing my diabetes, so, its back to my GP. It is six now. That is | :14:25. | :14:30.
brilliant. Is that in the normal range? It is in the normal range. | :14:30. | :14:35.
Are likely to keep it as that. Do your exercises, follow routine. It | :14:35. | :14:43.
has made a future difference. -- a huge difference. Dr Katie Thirlaway | :14:43. | :14:46.
of the All Wales Diabetes forum has been my mentor and support during | :14:46. | :14:49.
his process - which began back in the summer, six months on, what's | :14:49. | :14:59.
her verdict? If you were to lose some or again, you would see other | :14:59. | :15:04.
benefits. I would like to see a sustained his weight loss. If you | :15:04. | :15:09.
were to lose a little bit more, at the same sort of pace, that would | :15:09. | :15:19.
:15:19. | :15:19. | ||
be beneficial. Not too quick. blood glucose level has come down | :15:19. | :15:23.
as well. That is what you are aiming at. You are changing your | :15:24. | :15:33.
:15:34. | :15:36. | ||
lifestyle, taking more exercise. Eat more of a tree -- eat more | :15:36. | :15:41.
moderate food. So, the healthier food, coupled with exercise does | :15:41. | :15:45.
seem to have paid dividends. Six months ago I vowed to kick out the | :15:45. | :15:48.
curry and chips and say no to the naan, but it's easier said than | :15:48. | :15:57.
done. I can't pretend I had become a salad Mon Cher. I do still get | :15:57. | :16:04.
cravings for fatty food. But now, chips are an occasional treat. With | :16:04. | :16:07.
the blood glucose levels now in the normal range my type two diabetes | :16:07. | :16:16.
has been controlled, but only while I stick to this healthier lifestyle. | :16:16. | :16:22.
Time for the sport now. Christmas is supposed to be a time | :16:22. | :16:26.
of peace and goodwill to all men. But I wonder how much of that | :16:26. | :16:29.
there'll be on show at the Cardiff City Stadium tonight as the Blues | :16:30. | :16:33.
face the Dragons in the first of four rugby derbies over the festive | :16:33. | :16:37.
period. Gavin Henson is due to make his debut for the Blues this | :16:37. | :16:40.
evening. Then on Boxing Day, the clash between the Scarlets and the | :16:40. | :16:44.
Ospreys is a sell-out. The Scarlets then travel to Rodney Parade for | :16:44. | :16:47.
the last game of 2011 - before the Ospreys and the Blues bring in the | :16:47. | :16:53.
New Year on the first day of 2012. But it all starts at the Cardiff | :16:53. | :16:55.
City Stadium tonight. Former Wales fly-half Gareth Davies is | :16:55. | :17:02.
commentating for the BBC at tonight's match. Good evening | :17:02. | :17:09.
Gareth. It has been a bleak few weeks for the Welsh region. How | :17:09. | :17:13.
important is it that the teams put on a real adverts for Welsh rugby | :17:13. | :17:23.
:17:23. | :17:24. | ||
tonight? The season always seems to be kicked -- seems to economy had | :17:24. | :17:30.
the derbies. Fans want to see local derbies. Not too much goodwill on | :17:30. | :17:40.
:17:40. | :17:42. | ||
display. This season has been very anti-climactic. After the World Cup, | :17:42. | :17:47.
things have not developed. It is important that the Welsh public | :17:47. | :17:52.
will want to see these matches. Inevitably, a lot of the talk will | :17:52. | :17:58.
be about Gavin Henson, making his debut for the Blues. Is this a good | :17:58. | :18:03.
game for him to make his comeback? He likes a big stage. It is the | :18:03. | :18:09.
return of the prodigal son. He is a hugely talented individual, he has | :18:09. | :18:16.
not the build that talent. I think it is an exciting time for him. You | :18:16. | :18:22.
could argue it is perhaps his last opportunity. There is not a more | :18:22. | :18:26.
testing arena than a local derby. Cardiff Blues playing the Newport | :18:26. | :18:33.
Gwent Dragons should be testing. has been an interesting week. The | :18:33. | :18:43.
:18:43. | :18:44. | ||
salary cap, is that a good idea? am not sure. I think the outcome is | :18:44. | :18:48.
pretty obvious. The important thing for me is the fact that the Welsh | :18:48. | :18:56.
Rugby Union, and the regions, they are talking. There are competitive | :18:56. | :19:05.
elements, bigger budgets, the French teams. Perhaps they need to | :19:05. | :19:14.
work on the marketing side of the game. Irrespective of the Wales | :19:15. | :19:19.
play -- of Poole Wales play, they need to take into account the | :19:19. | :19:25.
regional teams. You need fans to turn up and support their local | :19:25. | :19:31.
regions. Thank you very much. The match is live on S4C and Radio | :19:31. | :19:36.
Wales. Kick-off at 7.35. Welsh racing will enjoy its biggest | :19:36. | :19:40.
week of the year over Christmas. A bumper crowd is expected at Ffos | :19:40. | :19:44.
Las in Carmarthenshire on Monday for their Boxing Day meeting. And | :19:44. | :19:47.
the following day, it's the Welsh National at Chepstow where last | :19:47. | :19:57.
:19:57. | :19:58. | ||
year's winner Synchronized will return to defend his title. In the | :19:58. | :20:02.
rolling Cotswolds this race or strainer is getting his | :20:03. | :20:06.
It's a race he knows and loves - having ridden it many times during | :20:06. | :20:09.
an illustious career as a jockey. And he's also won it twice as a | :20:10. | :20:12.
trainer - including last year's race when Champion jockey AP McCoy | :20:12. | :20:15.
guided one of his horses Synchronized to victory over the | :20:15. | :20:19.
Chepstow fences. On Tuesday, Synchronized will be back to defend | :20:19. | :20:24.
his title. He'll be carrying the same weight as last year which may | :20:24. | :20:32.
encourage punters to back him again in 2011. He will be the horse they | :20:32. | :20:38.
have to beat. Conditions are similar to last year, he is in the | :20:38. | :20:47.
their big chance. He ran a lovely race at Haydock, fingers crossed. | :20:47. | :20:50.
O'Neill has a track record of training winners in major races, no | :20:50. | :20:53.
expense is spared at the stables near Cheltenham to make sure the | :20:53. | :20:56.
horses have everything they need. He'll be entering four of them in | :20:56. | :21:05.
Tuesday's race. As far as I can remember this is as good a field as | :21:05. | :21:13.
we have seen for many years. We are very lucky to see the talent at his | :21:13. | :21:22.
stable. He assures me that there will go to finish 1-4. Also entered | :21:22. | :21:25.
this year, the 2009 winner Dream Alliance, owned by a syndicate from | :21:25. | :21:28.
Cefn Fforest, whose rags to riches story was turned into a film script, | :21:28. | :21:31.
but even they think it's unlikely he could do it again. Vale of | :21:31. | :21:34.
Glamorgn trainer Tim Vaughan will also mount a challenge with | :21:34. | :21:36.
Stewarts House. The weather forecast suggests that this year, | :21:36. | :21:40.
the meeting won't be troubled with the problems that led to it being | :21:40. | :21:43.
abandoned last December. This time last year, the Chepstow course was | :21:43. | :21:49.
under several feet of snow, so the race was rescheduled in January. | :21:49. | :21:51.
Therefore, if Synchronized can win on Tuesday, he would become the | :21:51. | :21:57.
first horse to win the Welsh National twice in the same year. | :21:57. | :22:01.
That would be one for the record book. That's it from me, have a | :22:01. | :22:06.
great Christmas. For the families of front-line | :22:06. | :22:10.
troops serving in Afghanistan, Christmas can be an emotional time. | :22:10. | :22:13.
But this year the RAF is using the internet, so relatives here can | :22:13. | :22:16.
access personal video messages from their loved ones, thousands of | :22:16. | :22:25.
miles away. December in the Afghan desert. | :22:25. | :22:28.
Around 30,000 people are stationed here, at the British military base | :22:28. | :22:30.
at Camp Bastion, including Flight Lieutenant Jamie Elliot from | :22:30. | :22:38.
Tredegar. He's serving a six month tour of duty and won't be back home | :22:38. | :22:47.
until next year. I think it's fair to say that my Christmas Day this | :22:47. | :22:51.
year will be different. I can't say that I won't be happy to be out | :22:51. | :22:54.
there, but I would prefer to be at home. Meanwhile, thousands of miles | :22:54. | :22:58.
away - in their front room in Tredegar - his parents Joe and Sian | :22:58. | :23:00.
are getting ready to watch a special Christmas message from | :23:00. | :23:04.
their son. It's the first time they've seen his face since he left | :23:05. | :23:12.
for Afghanistan. Here I am saying hello to you. The thinking of you. | :23:12. | :23:20.
It is the first tee without him. It is hard. -- the first a year. You | :23:20. | :23:26.
get messages by e-mail, but it is not the same. It makes all the | :23:26. | :23:30.
difference to see him. This year the RAF has recorded hundreds of | :23:30. | :23:32.
Christmas messages from military personnel in Afghanistan. Their | :23:32. | :23:35.
familes can then access those messages on their computer using a | :23:35. | :23:40.
special website, and individual code, supplied by the Air Force. | :23:40. | :23:43.
It's allowed the troops at Camp Bastion to tell loved ones back | :23:43. | :23:52.
home just how much they're missed. Nothing is quite the same as being | :23:52. | :23:55.
at home with your family. That is why these messages are so important. | :23:55. | :23:59.
He gives them a chance to connect with their family, and share their | :23:59. | :24:04.
duties, and that the family know they are OK. For Joe and Sian | :24:04. | :24:07.
Elliott, Christmas this year was always going to be an emotional | :24:07. | :24:10.
time. Their son may be thousands of miles away in Afghanistan, but they | :24:10. | :24:15.
can watch his message every day until he comes home next year. | :24:15. | :24:18.
Time for the weather - and someone's feeling festive - nice | :24:18. | :24:28.
:24:28. | :24:30. | ||
jumper Derek! You have probably seen this | :24:30. | :24:40.
:24:40. | :24:49. | ||
somewhere before? It was warned by Matt Smith, Dr Who. Anyway, a | :24:49. | :24:53.
jumper like this will come in handy tonight - it's going to be cold but | :24:53. | :24:56.
Rudolph won't be too happy with my forecast for Christmas. It's going | :24:56. | :24:58.
to be mild, damp and windy. The to be mild, damp and windy. The | :24:58. | :25:01.
only snow you'll see will be on your Xmas cards! Now heavy rain | :25:01. | :25:04.
today caused some flooding. This picture was taken in Wolfscastle in | :25:04. | :25:08.
Pembrokeshire by Geoffrey Eynon. At the moment there are 19 flood | :25:08. | :25:14.
alerts in force. One flood warning on the River Solva. Tonight much | :25:14. | :25:18.
drier. Just the odd shower. Clear skies. The wind slowly easing and | :25:18. | :25:20.
cold. Temperatures inland falling close to freezing with some ground | :25:20. | :25:23.
frost. Tomorrow morning. Christmas Eve. A cold start and a dry start | :25:23. | :25:27.
for some of us but it won't be dry everywhere. Some rain and showers | :25:27. | :25:30.
are likely in parts of the west and the north. So clouding over | :25:30. | :25:32.
tomorrow with some patchy rain and showers spreading across the | :25:32. | :25:40.
country but with some dry weather in between. The wind picking-up and | :25:40. | :25:46.
feeling chilly. Top temperatures 8 to 10 Celsius. Tomorrow night | :25:46. | :25:51.
cloudy. Some patchy rain and drizzle. Breezy too. So hopefully | :25:51. | :25:56.
Santa won't be blown off course. Christmas Day mild but windy. | :25:56. | :26:01.
Cloudy and damp as well. Some light rain, drizzle and hill fog. Drier | :26:01. | :26:04.
in parts of the north and east. Top temperatures 13 Celsius in Wrexham. | :26:04. | :26:09.
The south-westerly wind fresh to strong. Up to gale force in the | :26:09. | :26:11.
north-west. Boxing Day will continue mild and windy. Spots of | :26:12. | :26:17.
drizzle and hill fog but some dry weather as well. Temperatures 11 or | :26:17. | :26:19.
12 Celsius with a fresh to strong south-westerly wind. So a | :26:19. | :26:22.
traditional Welsh Christmas this year. In other words mild, damp and | :26:22. | :26:25.
windy. Not very festive but at least there shouldn't be too many | :26:25. | :26:28.
travel problems apart from some fog and poor visibility on higher | :26:28. | :26:37.
ground. And strong winds. That's the forecast. Time now for | :26:38. | :26:42.
the last of the Christmas Pictures. The first by Emily Belby from Barry | :26:42. | :26:49.
in the Vale of Glamorgan. The next in the Vale of Glamorgan. The next | :26:49. | :26:51.
from Rhys Evans in Williamstown. Helledd Griffiths from Glyndyfrdwy | :26:51. | :26:58.
is wishing us a merry Christmas. Our next picture is by Matthew | :26:58. | :27:00.
Price from Llandrindod. And finally Christmas lights by Grace May | :27:00. | :27:03.
Powell from Talgarth. Thanks very much for all your pictures and | :27:03. | :27:13.
:27:13. | :27:15. | ||
photos. Have a lovely Christmas. Nadolig Llawen. | :27:16. | :27:18.
