Welcome to Wales Today. Tonight's headlines: | :00:04. | :00:07.
Nearly a dozen of its stores will close, but the Peacocks brand is | :00:07. | :00:17.
:00:17. | :00:25. | ||
saved, along with its Welsh Also tonight: | :00:25. | :00:29.
Carl Whant will serve at least 35 years in prison for the murder of | :00:29. | :00:39.
:00:39. | :00:41. | ||
Nikita Grender. She was weeks away Nikkita was young and beautiful. | :00:41. | :00:46.
Together with Ryan they were about to be proud parents to Kelsey May. | :00:46. | :00:49.
This was ripped away by Carl Whant, who has never had the decency to | :00:50. | :00:52.
tell us the truth. The pollution running down this | :00:52. | :00:56.
rock face came from a fish farm - tonight there are calls for an | :00:56. | :00:59.
inquiry into the amount of public money it received. | :00:59. | :01:02.
Why a unique wooden viaduct dating back to the 1800s is to be | :01:02. | :01:06.
demolished. And Nathan Cleverly lends a hand to | :01:06. | :01:13.
help boxers from underprivileged countries reach the Olympics. | :01:14. | :01:19.
I have to be a world-beater. Always, that is my dream. I focus to be a | :01:19. | :01:26.
Good evening. The high street chain Peacocks has been bought out of | :01:26. | :01:29.
administration by the Scottish retailer Edinburgh Woollen Mill. | :01:29. | :01:32.
The deal means 6,000 jobs are saved but just over 3,000 redundancies | :01:32. | :01:39.
are being made. 11 stores out of the 62 across Wales will close, but | :01:39. | :01:42.
the Peacocks name survives, as do the three distribution depots in | :01:42. | :01:44.
south Wales and the headquarters in Cardiff, where our business | :01:44. | :01:54.
:01:54. | :01:58. | ||
correspondent Nick Servini is for Lucy, it has been an unbearably | :01:58. | :02:02.
tense time for the staff behind me with the company. It has been in | :02:02. | :02:05.
administration for a number of weeks. There has been speculation | :02:05. | :02:10.
as to what is going to happen to it. It has been connection to -- | :02:10. | :02:14.
connected with a major Indian manufacturer, a textile billionaire | :02:14. | :02:21.
from Japan. An Edinburgh company has won the race and it is fairly | :02:21. | :02:24.
well recognised brand on the British High Street. Edinburgh | :02:24. | :02:30.
Woollen Mill. After months of negotiations, a deal at last to | :02:30. | :02:33.
decide the future of one of the biggest companies in Wales. This is | :02:34. | :02:38.
what it will mean under the ownership of Edinburgh Woollen Mill. | :02:38. | :02:44.
388 stores and 50 concessions survive. 224 stores will close. It | :02:44. | :02:53.
means 6,000 jobs across the UK are saved but there will be 3,000, 100 | :02:53. | :02:58.
-- 3,100 redundancies. The vast majority of the 250 jobs at HQ | :02:59. | :03:02.
remain and three distribution centres in South Wales, which | :03:02. | :03:07.
employ nearly 500 people, will still operate. But they will be | :03:07. | :03:11.
changes on some Welsh High Street. 11 stores will close, including two | :03:11. | :03:16.
flagship ones in the city centre in Cardiff. Elsewhere, the closures | :03:16. | :03:23.
are in Cardiff, Newport, Tredegar, Swansea, Carmarthen, Llanelli, | :03:23. | :03:29.
Fishguard, Flint and the store in Wrexham is to be relocated. This | :03:29. | :03:34.
was the reaction to the news among the shoppers in Swansea. | :03:34. | :03:38.
I think any jobs these days that will save it, it's a bonus, isn't | :03:38. | :03:42.
it? The situation is so bad. It's really good news. Any jobs | :03:42. | :03:46.
saved his brilliant so there is enough unemployment as there is. | :03:46. | :03:50.
Any jobs are great. Is not known how much the deal to | :03:50. | :03:53.
buy the company was worth but administrators say they are pleased | :03:53. | :03:57.
most of the business has been saved. The atmosphere has been buoyant. | :03:57. | :04:00.
They are pleased that the sale has taken place. They are very | :04:01. | :04:05.
concerned about the people who have lost their jobs in the 224 stores | :04:05. | :04:08.
today. Peacock's went into administration | :04:08. | :04:14.
a month ago as a result of a debt worth around 750 million. Half of | :04:14. | :04:19.
the work force were made redundancy almost immediately. The retail | :04:19. | :04:25.
chain owned by the Peacocks group was sold to send European capital. | :04:25. | :04:29.
Today's announcement was the final chapter in the story that was | :04:29. | :04:32.
sparked by the insolvency of Peacocks. | :04:32. | :04:34.
Is this a good deal for the company? | :04:34. | :04:39.
It depends who you speak to. For the people who have lost their jobs | :04:39. | :04:45.
today, they are not. There are 3,000 of those across the UK. As an | :04:45. | :04:50.
independent, you have to say, it could have been worse. At the | :04:50. | :04:53.
headquarters behind me, admittedly, they have already lost half the | :04:53. | :04:57.
staff but we found out today the vast majority of the staff will | :04:57. | :05:01.
remain here now. Then there is the distribution network in South Wales, | :05:02. | :05:07.
500 people, as I mentioned. That distribution network will remain. | :05:07. | :05:13.
Then, in terms of the High Street, 11 out of around 60 of the stores | :05:13. | :05:18.
will close. The flagship store in the city centre of Cardiff to close. | :05:18. | :05:22.
The impact on the High Street will be limited. The other thing you | :05:22. | :05:26.
have to say is that went administrations -- administrators | :05:26. | :05:31.
are called in, there is always the risk that the business will be | :05:31. | :05:35.
liquidated. That hasn't happened here and the brand and the company | :05:35. | :05:40.
has survived this ordeal. Admittedly, about a third of the | :05:40. | :05:45.
operation will disappear. What are the new owners saying? | :05:45. | :05:48.
They haven't done an interview tonight. The chief Executive of | :05:48. | :05:51.
Edinburgh Woollen Mill has given a statement. Let me give you a | :05:51. | :05:55.
flavour. He says he's looking forward to rebuilding the business | :05:55. | :05:59.
in a tough economic environment. He has said there is scope to save | :05:59. | :06:03.
some more jobs in the future but says there is a considerable amount | :06:03. | :06:07.
of work to try to turn this business around. There is a decent | :06:07. | :06:10.
chance this will become an efficient operation. The problems | :06:10. | :06:14.
with Peacocks were never about the operating profits, it was always | :06:14. | :06:21.
about the deck. The debt has now disappeared and presumably, any | :06:21. | :06:24.
loss-making stores that did exist are now not part of the | :06:24. | :06:29.
organisation. It should be a fairly efficient company now run by a | :06:29. | :06:32.
Scottish organisation. Calculating and devious. The words | :06:32. | :06:36.
of the judge as he sentenced Carl Whant to 35 years in prison for the | :06:36. | :06:40.
rape and murder of pregnant teenager Nikitta Grender. The 19- | :06:40. | :06:43.
year-old from Newport and her unborn baby were killed in her flat | :06:43. | :06:47.
in February last year. Live to our reporter Nick Palit who's outside | :06:47. | :06:57.
:06:57. | :06:59. | ||
the flat in the Liswerry area of Newport. Fresh flowers here tonight. | :06:59. | :07:03.
This is the flat that Carl Whant set fire to, to try and cover his | :07:03. | :07:06.
murderous tracks. He claimed he'd had consensual sex with the heavily | :07:06. | :07:09.
pregnant teenager here and had nothing to do with her killing, but | :07:09. | :07:12.
the jury didn't believe a word of it and found him guilty on all four | :07:13. | :07:17.
counts. A show of solidarity and sadness on the steps of Newport | :07:17. | :07:20.
Crown Court. Nikkita Grenders family acknowledge the guilty | :07:21. | :07:23.
verdicts on Carl Whant, a man that's robbed them of a daughter | :07:24. | :07:32.
and an unborn grand-daughter. For us to see our grandchild for | :07:32. | :07:36.
the first time in a mortuary, that was the most heartbreaking thing we | :07:36. | :07:41.
have ever had to do. Nikita Brenda was so special and will remain in | :07:41. | :07:45.
our hearts until we die. We will never deal with the tragic events | :07:45. | :07:49.
that have stolen our family from us but hope that we can start to | :07:49. | :07:51.
understand what has happened. Nikkita Grender's body was found | :07:51. | :07:54.
last February in the bedroom of her burnt out flat in the Lliswerry | :07:55. | :07:57.
area of Newport. A postmortem examination found that her throat | :07:57. | :08:01.
had been slashed, and she'd been stabbed in the stomach. She'd been | :08:01. | :08:03.
a lively, sociable young woman, excited about the prospect of | :08:03. | :08:08.
becoming a mother for the first time. She was expecting a baby | :08:08. | :08:11.
daughter within a fortnight, and Nikkita and her boyfriend Ryan | :08:11. | :08:16.
Mayes had already named her Kelsey May. Today, Carl Whant, her | :08:16. | :08:19.
boyfriend's cousin was found guilty of murder, rape, child destruction | :08:19. | :08:29.
:08:29. | :08:29. | ||
and arson. The judge, Justice Williams, said | :08:29. | :08:33.
the murder of Nikki to grander and the death of her unborn child had | :08:33. | :08:36.
left her family and friends bereft. Their sense of loss compounded by | :08:37. | :08:42.
the fact that her murderer had also raped her. Sentencing him to a | :08:42. | :08:47.
minimum of 35 years, he described Carl Whant as calculating, vain and | :08:47. | :08:51.
devious and said that by setting fire to a bed, he had denied her | :08:51. | :08:55.
family one last chance to look at her face. | :08:55. | :08:59.
Nikkita Grender was so young and beautiful and together with Brian, | :08:59. | :09:04.
they were about to become a very proud that of parents. This has | :09:04. | :09:08.
been ripped from them by Carl Whant, who has never had the decency to | :09:08. | :09:12.
tell us the truth. On the night of the murder, Whant had been out with | :09:12. | :09:15.
a group of friends, including Ryan Mayes. He left the group later on | :09:15. | :09:18.
and was caught on CCTV several times. He said he was driving to | :09:18. | :09:23.
his grandmothers house to pick up cigarettes. We now know it was | :09:23. | :09:26.
during this time he raped and murdered Nikkita and killed her | :09:26. | :09:33.
unborn child, setting fire to her flat to cover his tracks. | :09:33. | :09:38.
35 years is the longest sentence I can remember in my 30 years in | :09:38. | :09:45.
Gwent Police. It is, and reflects, in my view, this absolutely | :09:45. | :09:48.
terrible crime that was committed by a Carl Whant. | :09:49. | :09:51.
The court heard how forensic examinations found Nikitta's blood | :09:51. | :09:54.
on Whant's clothes and in the footwell of his car. The jury was | :09:54. | :09:58.
also shown pictures of scratches on Whant's arms. It took the jury just | :09:58. | :10:02.
five hours to convict him on all charges. He now faces a minimum of | :10:02. | :10:09.
35 years behind bars. Nikitta Grender has been described | :10:09. | :10:14.
as a popular fun-loving young woman. Jordan Davies reports now on a | :10:14. | :10:17.
crime which has cast a long shadow over this community. | :10:17. | :10:19.
Nikitta Grender's death shocked everyone living on the Broadmead | :10:19. | :10:24.
Park Estate in the Lliswerry area of Newport. A popular young woman, | :10:24. | :10:29.
Nikitta was two weeks away from becoming a mother. Initially it was | :10:29. | :10:37.
thought she'd died in a tragic accident after her flat caught fire. | :10:37. | :10:43.
At 9am on 5th February, a senior fire officer investigated the flat. | :10:43. | :10:49.
He said something didn't look right. From then on, the emphasis of the | :10:49. | :10:52.
investigation shifted to include something more sinister. Police | :10:52. | :10:59.
stepped up patrols in the area as part of their inquiry. Then, late | :10:59. | :11:04.
one night, that inquiry became a murder investigation. | :11:04. | :11:08.
Gwent Police confirm we are involved in a murder inquiry. Post | :11:08. | :11:14.
mortem has shown that Nikkita Grender was stabbed, a weapon, | :11:14. | :11:18.
believed to be a knife, has not yet been found but this is a priority | :11:18. | :11:21.
for the search teams. Jade White, a family friend lives a few doors | :11:21. | :11:26.
down from where Nikitta died. Every time I go out the front door | :11:26. | :11:30.
and see a flat boarded-up, you think about it all the time. I've | :11:30. | :11:35.
got a little niece. Nikkita Grender's baby would have been a | :11:35. | :11:38.
couple of months younger than her. Many of Nikitta's close family and | :11:38. | :11:41.
friends live in the streets surrounding her home. They say the | :11:41. | :11:46.
estate has changed since that day a year ago. | :11:46. | :11:50.
There are several families here it that they are going to have to live | :11:50. | :11:53.
with the consequences of what has happened. You have to feel for them. | :11:53. | :11:57.
Those are innocent people. The person that committed the crime has | :11:57. | :12:00.
got what was coming, he's got what he deserved. | :12:01. | :12:03.
500 people attended Nikita Grenders' funeral at St John's | :12:03. | :12:07.
Church in Maindee, many wore pink as a mark of respect. The numbers | :12:07. | :12:10.
showed the strength of local feeling, and it was there again | :12:10. | :12:13.
today as Carl Whant was jailed - a packed public gallery in court, | :12:13. | :12:23.
:12:23. | :12:27. | ||
emotions riding high as justice was In addition to the rape, murder and | :12:27. | :12:31.
arson charges, Carl Whant also faced one of child destruction. | :12:31. | :12:35.
That is a rarely used charge but the Crown Prosecution Service said | :12:35. | :12:40.
they thought it was extremely important to mark the death of | :12:40. | :12:44.
Kelsey may as well. They used the Infant Life Preservation Act of | :12:44. | :12:49.
1929 to do that. It was originally set up to combat backstreet | :12:49. | :12:54.
abortionists but can also be applied to other cases. It was | :12:54. | :12:58.
broadly designed to help protect the rights of the unborn child that | :12:58. | :13:05.
is capable of being born alive. Kelsey met that description. | :13:05. | :13:08.
Hundreds of children were sent home today after metal thieves stole | :13:08. | :13:11.
copper piping from a school's heating system. The theft caused | :13:11. | :13:14.
thousands of pounds of flooding damage at Ysgol Gyfun Llanhari in | :13:14. | :13:18.
Rhondda Cynon Taf. Thieves broke into the boilerhouse overnight to | :13:18. | :13:23.
take copper piping. The school, which has had lead stolen from the | :13:23. | :13:27.
roof before, will reopen tomorrow. An investigation into commercial | :13:27. | :13:29.
and operational activities at Aberystwyth University has | :13:29. | :13:34.
concluded there was no evidence of fraud or corruption. But there were | :13:34. | :13:38.
failures to follow due process. The Vice Chancellor said today there | :13:38. | :13:40.
was evidence of overspending on certain projects and some members | :13:40. | :13:50.
:13:50. | :13:51. | ||
of staff have been suspended. There are clearly some areas where | :13:51. | :13:55.
we need to make improvements in the way that we work and that is to do | :13:55. | :14:00.
with management and governance and adherence to arrow and processes. | :14:00. | :14:03.
The processes were in place but not everyone has adhered to those in | :14:03. | :14:05.
the past. The Welsh Government has written to | :14:05. | :14:08.
the Race Equality Charity, Awema, to try and reclaim any public money | :14:08. | :14:11.
it still holds, the Assembly was told today. The charity is being | :14:11. | :14:14.
wound up after an inquiry found there was financial mismanagement | :14:14. | :14:17.
and conflicts of interest. Its chief executive Naz Malik and | :14:17. | :14:21.
finance director Saquib Zia were dismissed last week. Live now to | :14:21. | :14:31.
:14:31. | :14:32. | ||
the Senedd and our Welsh Affairs I understand the government faced | :14:32. | :14:37.
quite a grilling over AWEMA today. The opposition parties are angry | :14:37. | :14:41.
not just about what they think has been going on at AWEMA but what | :14:41. | :14:47.
they see as government stonewalling about the fact they have been | :14:47. | :14:53.
written statements, not statements giving in the assembly. They say | :14:54. | :14:57.
the government is refusing to answer crucial questions, not so | :14:57. | :15:01.
much about the current situation which everyone except has to be | :15:01. | :15:05.
investigated, but about the past relationship between the government | :15:05. | :15:09.
and AWEMA, particularly given that some of its senior figures had | :15:09. | :15:15.
close connections to the Labour Party. Here is Peter Black. | :15:15. | :15:18.
Government ministers received warning after warning from people | :15:18. | :15:23.
inside and outside the organisation after misconduct happening within | :15:23. | :15:29.
AWEMA. Can the Minister assure us that she and her colleagues, who we | :15:29. | :15:33.
believe have repeatedly failed, have acted appropriately at all | :15:33. | :15:37.
stages? That individual relationships with AWEMA members | :15:37. | :15:43.
did not compromise the scrutiny of that body? How did the Government | :15:43. | :15:53.
respond? Assembly Members did not get that many answers to the | :15:53. | :16:00.
questions. There were a couple of development. The ministers | :16:00. | :16:04.
reassured Assembly Members that the Audit Office inquiry would go all | :16:04. | :16:09.
the way back to 1999, that it would look at the whole history of AWEMA | :16:09. | :16:14.
and its relationship with the Welsh Government and there would be an | :16:14. | :16:19.
attempt to claw back any public money it still had. The Welsh | :16:19. | :16:29.
:16:29. | :16:29. | ||
Government acted immediately. We informed AWEMA that the money would | :16:29. | :16:34.
be terminated with immediate effect will stop a letter has gone today | :16:34. | :16:38.
to protect our interests and stating a claim in respect of | :16:38. | :16:43.
funding they currently hold. Assurances from the Minister that | :16:43. | :16:48.
when will the various inquiries be completed? Not from the audit | :16:49. | :16:54.
office until the summer pop, probably. We are looking at the | :16:54. | :16:56.
possibility of it all going to court. | :16:57. | :17:01.
Still to come tonight: It dates back to the 1800s - why | :17:01. | :17:04.
this unique wooden viaduct could soon be knocked down. | :17:04. | :17:06.
And how Wales is helping boxers from under-privileged countries | :17:06. | :17:16.
:17:16. | :17:26. | ||
There's been a call for an inquiry into the amount of public funding | :17:26. | :17:30.
given to a fish farm which polluted the environment. Selonda UK, based | :17:30. | :17:32.
near Beaumaris on Anglesey, received more than 4 million from | :17:32. | :17:35.
the European Union and Welsh Government. Today, its former | :17:35. | :17:37.
managing director admitted failing to comply with environmental | :17:37. | :17:41.
regulations. He was given a conditional discharge. The company | :17:41. | :17:49.
will be sentenced next month. It was set up to put Wales at the | :17:49. | :17:53.
forefront of fish production. State-of-the-art, environmentally | :17:53. | :17:58.
friendly. The waste would be treated in reed beds. It was set up | :17:58. | :18:04.
with millions of pounds of public money. The ambition was there. A | :18:04. | :18:10.
clean, green, high-value business, but Selonda UK failed. It alluded a | :18:10. | :18:14.
fragile marine environment and it failed financially to, despite all | :18:14. | :18:20.
that money from the public purse. The business was built in a disused | :18:20. | :18:23.
quarry yards from the sea and this is what Environment Agency | :18:23. | :18:28.
officials found when they visited Selonda UK in 20th August 10. A | :18:28. | :18:32.
pipe carrying better and discharging directly into the coast. | :18:32. | :18:37.
It left the cliff-face stained white by sodium hydroxide, a | :18:37. | :18:44.
chemical used to adjust the acidity of water. This pollution landed the | :18:44. | :18:47.
company in court. But there is evidence of other environmental | :18:47. | :18:52.
failings. Waste from the tanks was supposed to be cleaned up by the | :18:52. | :18:57.
Natural action of the reed bed built alongside the plant. But for | :18:57. | :19:01.
a time at least the system was not working. Selonda UK tried to hide | :19:01. | :19:07.
it. There were certain things that we felt the company and the | :19:07. | :19:11.
individuals on site had been hiding from us. There were discharges | :19:11. | :19:16.
taking place that we did not know about until we found and did more | :19:16. | :19:20.
investigations on the site. Witnesses have told us there were | :19:21. | :19:26.
practices on the site deliberately intended to deceive us. Questions | :19:26. | :19:31.
are now being asked about financial aspects of Selonda UK's business | :19:31. | :19:36.
and the amount of public money used to create just 30 jobs. Selonda UK | :19:36. | :19:46.
:19:46. | :19:47. | ||
was a 50-50 partnership. This website boasts that half of the | :19:47. | :19:50.
investment costs came in non- refundable grants from the European | :19:50. | :19:54.
Union and the government of Wales. We have identified a string of | :19:54. | :20:00.
payments from Europe and the Welsh Government totalling more than 4.2 | :20:00. | :20:04.
5 million. 1.2 million was all the business would fall when it was | :20:04. | :20:09.
sold out of administration in January. There are clearly lessons | :20:10. | :20:14.
that need to be learnt. This was a bus to be a highly environmentally | :20:14. | :20:19.
friendly project. They have pleaded guilty to pollution and under 4 | :20:19. | :20:24.
million has gone into this company. It has been sold for less than 1.5 | :20:24. | :20:29.
million. There are clear questions that need to be answered. After the | :20:30. | :20:36.
buyout, the company was renamed. The Environment Agency says it is | :20:36. | :20:40.
now working to make sure the new business operates properly. | :20:40. | :20:43.
Tributes have been paid to the former leader of the Welsh Liberal | :20:43. | :20:47.
Party Lord Hooson, who's died at the age of 86. Emlyn Hooson was a | :20:47. | :20:50.
distinguished lawyer and a QC. He was the MP for Montgomeryshire | :20:50. | :20:52.
between 1962 and 1979. Here's our Political Correspondent, Tomos | :20:52. | :21:02.
:21:02. | :21:02. | ||
Livingstone. Few people did more to keep the | :21:02. | :21:07.
Liberal flame alive in Wales than Emlyn Hooson. For many years, he | :21:07. | :21:12.
was the party's only Welsh MPs. His response to the electoral rise of | :21:12. | :21:18.
Labour and Plaid Cymru was to form the Welsh Liberal Party as a | :21:18. | :21:23.
distinct organisation. Today the tributes poured in from across the | :21:23. | :21:26.
political spectrum. Although we were in different parties, I don't | :21:26. | :21:31.
think I ever found myself having a cross word with him. He was | :21:31. | :21:35.
invariably polite and generous of spirit and that is how he talked to | :21:35. | :21:40.
anyone, disagreeing or not. He was clear and powerful in speech and | :21:40. | :21:46.
incredibly able and sharper. think he kept the flame of liberals | :21:46. | :21:55.
isn't burning in Wales. -- liberalism. He developed the ideal | :21:55. | :22:00.
of federal structure. Emlyn Hooson enjoyed a glittering legal career. | :22:00. | :22:05.
At 35 he became the youngest ever young Welsh lawyer to be appointed | :22:05. | :22:12.
a QC. In 1966, he was given the task of defending Ian Brady. He was | :22:12. | :22:16.
made a peer in 1979 and worked as a non-executive director at Laura | :22:16. | :22:21.
Ashley. Today, the leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats, Kirsty | :22:21. | :22:27.
Williams, said he cared for the people of Montgomeryshire and Wales. | :22:27. | :22:29.
A new 20 million road and rail bridge in Penrhyndeudraeth in | :22:29. | :22:33.
Gwynedd has been given the go ahead. It will replace the existing Pont | :22:33. | :22:37.
Briwet crossing which was built in 1867. The bridge, which includes a | :22:37. | :22:40.
toll house, is unique as it's a wooden viaduct used by trains and | :22:40. | :22:46.
cars. Time has taken its toll on Pont | :22:46. | :22:51.
Briwet. Last owned by Sir Osmond Williams, 2nd Baronet, the bridge | :22:51. | :22:55.
was built 145 years ago to span the River Dwyryd. In summer though it's | :22:55. | :23:01.
single carriageway causes headaches for drivers. Try and imagine what | :23:01. | :23:06.
it is like in summer when we have thousands of visitors coming to the | :23:06. | :23:12.
area and they are not prepared to wait on a rainy day especially up | :23:12. | :23:16.
to half an hour, sometimes, to go over the bridge. For years there've | :23:16. | :23:24.
been various plans to create a new crossing. It has not always been | :23:24. | :23:26.
popular with local people and visitors because the road simply | :23:26. | :23:34.
was not built to cope with modern traffic. The narrow lane and the | :23:34. | :23:38.
tall means some people have long wanted a replacement. Snowdonia | :23:38. | :23:40.
National Park planners approved the plan to demolish the wooden viaduct | :23:40. | :23:44.
and tollhouse to make way for a new rail and road bridge. It will cost | :23:44. | :23:49.
20 million but many believe it'll be money well spent. We see | :23:49. | :23:53.
considerable benefits because at the moment it is a tourism area but | :23:53. | :23:57.
the planning permission has gone through forepeak development of an | :23:57. | :24:01.
airfield and we see this as a source of alternative jobs, better | :24:01. | :24:05.
job opportunities and therefore increasing the financial situation | :24:05. | :24:08.
for the coast. The Welsh historic monuments body Cadw could yet | :24:09. | :24:11.
object to the demolition of the Grade 2 Listed structure, but | :24:11. | :24:14.
supporters of the scheme say only part of the bridge still contains | :24:14. | :24:23.
original elements. Wales is hosting an Olympic | :24:23. | :24:26.
training camp this week, but none of the athletes taking part are | :24:26. | :24:29.
Welsh or even British. Boxers from 44 underdeveloped countries are | :24:29. | :24:32.
being coached at Cardiff University to give them a better chance of | :24:32. | :24:34.
qualifying for London 2012. Our sports reporter Ashleigh Crowter | :24:34. | :24:40.
went along too. The Olympics brings the world | :24:40. | :24:43.
together. In fact, it is already happening in Wales five months | :24:43. | :24:49.
before the London Games begin. 68 boxes from 44 countries, both men | :24:49. | :24:53.
and women, drawn from all five continents are here for the next | :24:53. | :24:58.
three weeks for an intensive training camp. It is organised by a | :24:58. | :25:03.
amateur boxing's world governing body who want to help boxers from | :25:03. | :25:08.
developing countries to compete on a more level playing field. We want | :25:08. | :25:12.
to qualify for the upcoming World Championships and perform much | :25:12. | :25:18.
better. Cardiff University beat rival bids from France and England | :25:18. | :25:22.
to host the camp and today it invited back Davies and maths | :25:22. | :25:26.
graduate to pass on his expertise. Nathan Cleverly will defend his | :25:26. | :25:32.
world title in Cardiff on Saturday and he proved to be an inspiration. | :25:32. | :25:40.
I am happy to meet him because when I talked to him I also want to be a | :25:40. | :25:44.
world champion. It is good for them to use the facilities we have got | :25:44. | :25:50.
and give them the best opportunity they can have. They are training | :25:50. | :25:54.
with the best coaches and it gives them the best chance possible to | :25:54. | :25:59.
qualify for the Olympic Games. is a truly international event but | :25:59. | :26:03.
it will also leave a real legacy in Wales because as a direct result of | :26:03. | :26:08.
this camp, for the first time, Wales has its own Olympic-sized | :26:08. | :26:13.
ring to be used by a future generation of Welsh amateur boxers. | :26:13. | :26:17.
Colin Jones is in charge of the camp. He competed in the Olympics | :26:17. | :26:26.
in Montreal in 1976. Going to the Olympic Games was something special. | :26:26. | :26:30.
It leaves a mark on you. It is a good mark. If some of these could | :26:30. | :26:37.
qualify, it is a life-changing event. This will not be the last | :26:37. | :26:40.
association with the Olympics for Cardiff University. They will be | :26:40. | :26:49.
hosting a camp and the Australian Paralympics team later this year. | :26:49. | :26:58.
Wet and windy today. Derek, you did The worst is over but a few rivers | :26:58. | :27:02.
are swollen. At the moment, there is one flood warning on the River | :27:02. | :27:06.
Conwy between Llanrwst and Trefriw and a few flood alerts. Tomorrow | :27:06. | :27:12.
will be drier and mild. Less windy too. Some parts of the country will | :27:12. | :27:16.
enjoy a taste of spring, but not everywhere. Temperatures in | :27:16. | :27:21.
Holywell rising to 15 degrees Celsius. Only 11 Celsius in | :27:21. | :27:25.
Hayscastle. Tonight will be cloudy and damp. Low cloud, mist, hill and | :27:25. | :27:29.
coastal fog as well. The wind easing and very mild. Lowest | :27:29. | :27:32.
temperatures around nine to 11 degrees Celsius. Tomorrow, the air | :27:32. | :27:35.
over Britain will have come from the Tropics, but I can't promise a | :27:35. | :27:40.
clear, blue sky. As the air crosses the sea it will form low cloud. And | :27:40. | :27:44.
that's what we can expect tomorrow. Low cloud, mist and murk. Hill and | :27:44. | :27:48.
coastal fog. Some poor visibility. Spots of drizzle and it will be | :27:48. | :27:50.
very mild. Even at eight in the morning, temperatures will be | :27:50. | :27:53.
around 11 degrees Celsius in Welshpool. So, mild tomorrow, but | :27:53. | :27:56.
most of the country grey and misty. A little drizzle, but otherwise dry. | :27:56. | :28:00.
The best of the weather in parts of the north and east. Dry and | :28:00. | :28:02.
brightening-up with a little sunshine. Not as windy as today | :28:02. | :28:05.
with temperatures above average. 11 to 15 degrees Celsius. Along the | :28:05. | :28:08.
south and west coast tomorrow, it will be grey and misty with fog | :28:08. | :28:10.
patches. Temperatures in Pendine around 11 degrees Celsius. However, | :28:10. | :28:14.
in parts of the north and east it will feel more like spring. | :28:14. | :28:16.
Temperatures in Colwyn Bay reaching 15 degrees Celsius. Friday less | :28:16. | :28:20.
mild. Some rain and drizzle spreading south. Mist and fog | :28:20. | :28:24.
patches. Into the weekend, the weather will improve. Saturday will | :28:24. | :28:28.
be dry with some sunshine. Temperatures lower with light winds. | :28:28. | :28:31.
Sunday will start dry but clouding over with a little rain. If you're | :28:31. | :28:34.
heading to Twickers for the rugby, the weather will be ideal. Dry with | :28:34. | :28:37.
light winds. Temperatures a fresher 8 degrees Celsius. And it should be | :28:37. | :28:43.
dry in Wembley for the football on dry in Wembley for the football on | :28:43. | :28:49.
The high street chain Peacocks has been bought out of administration | :28:49. | :28:52.
by the Scottish retailer Edinburgh Woollen Mill. The deal means 6,000 | :28:52. | :28:55.
jobs are saved, but just over 3,000 redundancies are being made, with | :28:55. | :29:00.
11 stores in Wales to close. And Carl Whant has been sentenced | :29:00. | :29:04.
to 35 years in prison for the rape and murder of pregnant teenager | :29:04. | :29:07.
Nikitta Grender. The 19-year-old from Newport and her unborn baby | :29:07. | :29:10.
were killed in her flat in February last year. The judge described | :29:10. | :29:16. |
