Welcome to Wales Today. Tonight's top story... A bank worker is | :00:08. | :00:13.
jailed after stealing 160,000 from customers. She knew many of them | :00:13. | :00:19.
personally. Very unexpected. He would never have thought that | :00:20. | :00:26.
somebody like her would touch anybody's money. -- you would never | :00:26. | :00:36.
:00:36. | :00:40. | ||
Good evening. Also tonight, the family a TV cameraman Gareth | :00:40. | :00:43.
Montgomery-Johnson are concerned for his welfare after he is | :00:43. | :00:49.
arrested in Libya. Students that it spent thousands on their education | :00:49. | :00:52.
tell us why they are concerned day University of Wales degrees might | :00:52. | :00:57.
not appear. Good evening from London on the eve of a monster | :00:57. | :01:07.
:01:07. | :01:08. | ||
weekend for Welsh sport. The supporters are already on their way. | :01:08. | :01:15.
Many left this morning for the Triple Crown showdown. Red turns | :01:15. | :01:19.
blue on Sunday. Cardiff City head to London aiming for silverware in | :01:19. | :01:26.
the shape of the Carling Cup. fans are behind us. We hope that | :01:26. | :01:32.
they are going to do well. We are here to make history. And the weigh | :01:32. | :01:42.
:01:42. | :01:47. | ||
in is over. Our world boxing champ A bank worker that stole more than | :01:47. | :01:51.
160,000 from customers at a branch where she worked has been sentenced | :01:51. | :01:57.
to 2.5 years in prison. Gaynor Russ was also a church warden and | :01:57. | :02:01.
hoodwink many elderly and vulnerable people, all of whom | :02:01. | :02:07.
trusted her completely. 59-year-old Gaynor Russ arrived in court this | :02:07. | :02:12.
morning expecting a jail sentence. A family bomber, churchwarden and | :02:12. | :02:16.
respected member of the community but for years, she had stolen from | :02:16. | :02:23.
Barbara or clients, many of whom she knew personally. -- many | :02:23. | :02:31.
clients. She took money of myself and my parents. They are both very | :02:31. | :02:38.
elderly. That really upset me. That she took the money of my parents | :02:38. | :02:44.
and myself. She worked at Barclays for 40 years. She was a counter | :02:44. | :02:49.
manager, a position she used to her advantage. She moved money in and | :02:49. | :02:54.
out of accounts to cover her tracks. Barclays have refunded the money | :02:54. | :02:58.
but it is estimated she took more than 160,000 out of the accounts | :02:58. | :03:04.
she handled. Michael Thompson said she took more than 23,000 from his | :03:04. | :03:09.
father's account and he found out when the fraud team contacted him | :03:09. | :03:17.
bus-stop she has taken --. She has taken a lot of money off him. He | :03:17. | :03:23.
could hardly walk and had emphysema. I used to go to the bank and we | :03:23. | :03:27.
trusted Gaynor Russ. I never asked for a statement because I trusted | :03:27. | :03:32.
her. She said she took money because of a credit card debt but | :03:32. | :03:38.
could not say how it had been spent. The judge said that an aggravating | :03:38. | :03:43.
feature of the offences was that almost all the victims were | :03:43. | :03:47.
vulnerable or elderly. They felt personally betrayed by you. They | :03:47. | :03:53.
trusted you, the judge said. She pleaded guilty to 13 charges and | :03:53. | :03:58.
was sentenced to 2.5 years and will serve half that time in jail. Her | :03:58. | :04:02.
lawyer said she was tortured by what she had done and wanted to | :04:02. | :04:06.
apologise to everybody she had betrayed. A cameraman from | :04:06. | :04:10.
Carmarthen has been arrested in Libya. Gareth Montgomery-Johnson | :04:10. | :04:15.
works for Press TV, the English news channel on Iranian television. | :04:15. | :04:22.
He was detained on Tuesday and his sister is concern for his welfare. | :04:22. | :04:28.
Here is our correspondent. family found out about this this | :04:28. | :04:33.
morning to. He is from Carmarthen but has been working in Libya since | :04:33. | :04:38.
last year. He is a cameraman and what the channel have told us is | :04:38. | :04:43.
that on Tuesday Gareth and a colleague, a reporter, were seized | :04:43. | :04:50.
in Libya. They were apparently seized by a brigade which is one of | :04:50. | :04:54.
the forces involved in toppling Colonel Gaddafi. They have been | :04:54. | :04:58.
taken to Tripoli but what we do not understand is the detail as to | :04:58. | :05:04.
where they are being held. As a result, I have been talking to his | :05:04. | :05:09.
sister and she of course is very concerned for his welfare. She is | :05:09. | :05:16.
concern for his whereabouts and welfare. We found out that it was | :05:16. | :05:22.
in fact this morning. We could easily slip into getting upset but | :05:22. | :05:29.
he has got a job to do, to try and find out what the information is. | :05:29. | :05:33.
We want to sort the situation out and we will continue to try and | :05:33. | :05:39.
keep some semblance of normality. We are trying to get through the | :05:39. | :05:45.
day and that is how it is. We are trying not to let the brain or | :05:45. | :05:51.
wander. We are trying not to think too much about the position he is | :05:51. | :05:56.
in because you become paralysed. Tensions in Libya are very well | :05:57. | :06:02.
known and he must have been aware of the risks. She thought Gareth | :06:02. | :06:07.
was well aware of the dangers. She absolutely understood that he loved | :06:07. | :06:14.
the job but that it was a very dangerous every day. I have no | :06:14. | :06:20.
doubt that he puts his heart and soul into everything that he does. | :06:20. | :06:25.
He is going over and above the call of duty in his quest for trying to | :06:25. | :06:31.
report what he sees as a newsworthy. He is trying to illustrate to | :06:31. | :06:40.
people what is going on to. He was aware of the danger. The family | :06:40. | :06:44.
have tried to understand as best they can and tried to illustrate | :06:44. | :06:47.
what the risks were but he understood that full well and that | :06:47. | :06:55.
is what he wanted to do and he has done it. The Foreign Office has | :06:55. | :06:58.
said two British nationals have been detained and that the British | :06:58. | :07:04.
Embassy is looking into doing everything it can to find out more. | :07:04. | :07:08.
BBC Wales has discovered evidence of problems in the relationship | :07:08. | :07:11.
between the University of Wales and other colleges which validates its | :07:11. | :07:16.
degrees. Students at Birmingham Graduate School, which offers | :07:16. | :07:18.
University of Wales courses have said they are concerned they will | :07:18. | :07:22.
not get their degrees because of a financial dispute between the | :07:22. | :07:29.
institutions. This is Birmingham Graduate School. The offices are | :07:29. | :07:33.
above a row of shops. Students from across the world travel here to | :07:34. | :07:38.
study. Many have gone to the University of Wales validated it | :07:38. | :07:43.
MBA courses. BBC Wales has been contacted and told that despite | :07:43. | :07:48.
completing courses at a cost of more than 3,000, several students | :07:48. | :07:53.
had not received their degree. We have seen documentary evidence from | :07:53. | :07:57.
the University of Wales Validation unit that they will not issue any | :07:57. | :08:02.
certificates or confirmation letters until the students have | :08:02. | :08:09.
cleared their debt. I have paid money and satisfied everything. I | :08:09. | :08:19.
:08:19. | :08:29. | ||
In a statement online it reassure students that they will eventually | :08:29. | :08:33.
get their certificates and that they will keep in touch with the | :08:33. | :08:38.
University of Wales. But students have said that reassurance is not | :08:38. | :08:40.
enough and they will not be happy until they have received their | :08:40. | :08:50.
:08:50. | :09:01. | ||
In a statement, the university told us that details of all the | :09:01. | :09:04.
Validation agreements with part- time colleges, including the | :09:04. | :09:09.
payment of fees are confidential and commercially sensitive. It says | :09:09. | :09:14.
it has a duty of care to provide results and certificates to | :09:14. | :09:17.
students that successfully complete programmes of study but that | :09:17. | :09:21.
issuing certificates is governed by the contract between the university | :09:21. | :09:27.
and the centre. Two previous investigations by the BBC uncovered | :09:27. | :09:31.
serious problems at a number of the University's part time -- partner | :09:31. | :09:36.
colleges. A scam was exposed in which students were offered help to | :09:36. | :09:43.
cheat their way into University of Wales degrees. Last October, the | :09:43. | :09:47.
University of Wales announced it would stop validating courses at | :09:47. | :09:51.
all other institutions in the UK and abroad but would honour | :09:51. | :09:56.
existing commitments. In future it will only award courses that it | :09:56. | :10:01.
fully controls. In September it will be branded again as a merger | :10:01. | :10:05.
between St David and Swansea Metropolitan University. Students | :10:05. | :10:09.
will receive University of Wales and Trinity St David degrees | :10:09. | :10:14.
instead. But for these students, the future remains uncertain and | :10:14. | :10:18.
they just want prooved they have completed their course. The Wells | :10:18. | :10:22.
government is pushing for it Bath for years back it was advised not | :10:22. | :10:31.
to merge South well as universities. A report describes plans to merge | :10:31. | :10:34.
the University of Glamorgan and the University of Wales and other | :10:34. | :10:38.
institutions as unrealistic. The government said the report was | :10:38. | :10:43.
produced when the situation facing higher education was very different. | :10:43. | :10:47.
The Welsh teaching union UCAC has decided to reject the pension offer | :10:47. | :10:52.
at a meeting in Aberystwyth. They said the government offer is not | :10:52. | :10:56.
acceptable and warns that the option of further strikes is opened. | :10:56. | :11:01.
The government says it is a good and fair deal. Seven more children | :11:01. | :11:05.
have been diagnosed with measles in Porthmadog, bringing the total | :11:05. | :11:12.
number of cases to 19, 17 of them at this school. Parents are urged | :11:12. | :11:18.
to get vaccinations. The infected students either had no jabs or just | :11:18. | :11:26.
one dense. If he won a sports fan, he will not be so -- short changed. | :11:26. | :11:34.
We have got the Six Nations showdown. Welcome to Twickenham. | :11:34. | :11:38.
This is where it all starts tomorrow at. It will be a feast of | :11:38. | :11:44.
Welsh sport would rugby, football and boxing. It will be a packed 48 | :11:44. | :11:48.
hours but it starts here at the home of English rugby as Wales | :11:48. | :11:52.
attempt the Triple Crown. Twickenham is looking spick and | :11:52. | :11:57.
span and we have just got a few final preparations. The goal posts | :11:57. | :12:01.
are up and we are ready for take- off. Both teams have been here just | :12:01. | :12:08.
to get a feel of the ground and make sure they are 100 % ready. The | :12:08. | :12:16.
supporters have been arriving and Arkin very good spirits. Wales have | :12:16. | :12:20.
never won a Triple Crown on English soil but both fans feel that might | :12:20. | :12:29.
The match might be less than 24 hours away but supporters were | :12:29. | :12:36.
already in fine voice and setting off for the trip. An early start | :12:36. | :12:41.
but it is all about the build up. His support the group was formed | :12:41. | :12:47.
back in the 1950s and a relish the route to Twickenham. I came back | :12:47. | :12:52.
from here to London and enjoyed the game and came back again and again. | :12:52. | :12:58.
It is a long way away but it has been formalised. I think we should | :12:58. | :13:03.
be confident. It is a game we can certainly win and we hope that we | :13:03. | :13:13.
:13:13. | :13:13. | ||
Apology for the loss of subtitles for 42 seconds | :13:13. | :13:55.
will. They are few and far between England have made four changes from | :13:55. | :13:59.
the win over Italy - or when Farrell will start at fly half for | :14:00. | :14:03.
the first time. They say Wales are there for right challenge for them | :14:03. | :14:08.
at just the right time. We will just go out there and focus on | :14:08. | :14:15.
beating Wales. They are coming down to do the same thing. It will be an | :14:15. | :14:19.
exciting game. There is no escape from the Welsh | :14:19. | :14:23.
fans. At this Popat the flags are out and they are expecting a great | :14:23. | :14:30.
atmosphere. -- at this pop. We will have the greatest party in the | :14:31. | :14:35.
world. Sadly, I think Wales will win. But at least 15. | :14:35. | :14:40.
Wales have beat on their confidence from the World Cup this Six Nations | :14:40. | :14:44.
tournament - a win tomorrow at Twickenham will be testament to | :14:44. | :14:48.
just how far they have come. We will be talking more rugby in a | :14:48. | :14:53.
moment, but first, breaking news tonight. Just days before he was | :14:53. | :14:59.
due to take charge of Wales, assistant Wales coach Raymond for | :14:59. | :15:04.
high and has announced that he has resigned. He has said on Twitter he | :15:04. | :15:08.
has had enough of political and destructive games, but he thanks | :15:08. | :15:12.
the players and the fans for his amazing journey. | :15:12. | :15:17.
Let us turn to football. A huge weekend for Cardiff City fans. Nine | :15:17. | :15:22.
miles that way, you will find Wembley, and that is where Cardiff | :15:22. | :15:25.
City finds are heading this Sunday for the final of the Carling Cup. | :15:25. | :15:30.
They will take on Liverpool. It is their 4th trip in four years, they | :15:30. | :15:34.
were waved off by fans early this morning as they started their | :15:34. | :15:38.
journey, hoping to find some -- hoping to bring some silverware | :15:38. | :15:42.
home. It is becoming a second home for | :15:42. | :15:46.
Cardiff City, on a Sunday they will be at Wembley again hoping things | :15:46. | :15:50.
turn out better than previous finals in the FA Cup and | :15:50. | :15:53.
Championship play-offs. The team set off for Wembley at lunchtime, | :15:53. | :15:58.
cheered on their way by fans who will be following them down the | :15:58. | :16:04.
Mfor on Sunday morning. It is a fantastic time to be a Cardiff City | :16:04. | :16:07.
fan. Three Wembley finals in four years is an amazing record for any | :16:07. | :16:13.
club, and they are confident that this time they will get a win. | :16:13. | :16:18.
believe in them. I want to see some passion, and the will to win. | :16:18. | :16:23.
think we will win, as long as they keep the game tight. | :16:23. | :16:27.
In August, Wembley was the last thing on the mind of the fans as | :16:27. | :16:32.
the team scraped through in extra- time against Oxford United. It was | :16:32. | :16:36.
the match that set them on their way and save the lives of this | :16:36. | :16:40.
Cardiff City fan. Lesley had collapsed at his home in Newport | :16:40. | :16:44.
and could not get up for six days. Fellow fans noticed he was not on | :16:44. | :16:52.
the bus to Oxford, and raised the alarm. I thought I would never make | :16:52. | :17:00.
it. I can't wait for Sunday, you know. I thought I would never make | :17:00. | :17:04.
Sunday. The road to Wembley was relatively | :17:04. | :17:08.
kind to Cardiff. After the first round at Oxford they had four home | :17:08. | :17:13.
games, including a victory over premier-league Blackburn. Then they | :17:13. | :17:17.
avoided one of the top division's big beasts in the semi-finals, | :17:17. | :17:21.
although victory against Crystal Palace could not have been closer. | :17:21. | :17:26.
Double saves from Tom he turned in a nail-biting penalty shoot out | :17:26. | :17:34.
made history for Cardiff City, their first time it in that final. | :17:34. | :17:44.
:17:44. | :17:46. | ||
It is a new one for me walking out there, against a top team it is | :17:46. | :17:49.
certainly going to be something that is nice to look back on, but | :17:49. | :17:58.
at the time, we have to win it. Liverpool are strong favourites. | :17:58. | :18:02.
They got to the final thanks to a ball from Craig Bellamy, who says | :18:02. | :18:12.
:18:12. | :18:12. | ||
he will not celebrate if he scores against his home town club. We will | :18:12. | :18:16.
talk after it, not a problem, but we have to respect each other as | :18:16. | :18:20.
well. I do not want to get information off them or tried to | :18:20. | :18:28.
hand them for information. We just want to both tripe as best as we | :18:28. | :18:33.
can, and whoever wins, deserves it. This match is not a straight Wales | :18:33. | :18:37.
against England contest. Liverpool has strong support, | :18:37. | :18:43.
include -- especially in North Wales. Many fans are looking | :18:43. | :18:46.
forward to red ribbons being on the Kop. | :18:46. | :18:51.
I think a lot of people backwards and forwards have emigrated one way | :18:51. | :18:55.
or another across the water, so that is probably why there is quite | :18:55. | :19:01.
a healthy support, and of course liveable's history is very strong | :19:01. | :19:06.
in football. - Mac Liverpool. Today the players left with dreams | :19:06. | :19:12.
of causing an upset. On Sunday they hope to return to Wales as he was. | :19:12. | :19:18.
It is not just about football and rugby, but about boxing. Nathan | :19:18. | :19:21.
Cleverly will take the ring tomorrow night to defend his title. | :19:21. | :19:25.
We will hear from him in a few minutes. The way in happened today. | :19:25. | :19:31.
We will see you in a few minutes. - - the way in happened today. | :19:31. | :19:37.
Does it matter which way a person is buried? One councillor in | :19:37. | :19:40.
Aberystwyth is claiming people being buried in the town cemetery | :19:40. | :19:50.
:19:50. | :19:51. | ||
are facing the wrong way. Cefn Llan cemetery sits on a deep | :19:51. | :19:57.
sleep. It opened in 2006, but it is only now questions are being asked | :19:57. | :19:59.
about the way burials are carried out. | :19:59. | :20:04.
As you can see, these headstones are facing south, and now a local | :20:04. | :20:08.
councillor says that is wrong, and that in accordance with Christian | :20:08. | :20:12.
tradition, people should instead be buried west to east. Just like they | :20:12. | :20:19.
have been here, in Llanbadarn Fawr cemetery. The Christian way it is | :20:19. | :20:25.
to be buried facing east, so that you would face Jesus. That is what | :20:25. | :20:30.
they believe in. Do you think this matters? When you consider how many | :20:30. | :20:35.
people are cremated these days, is this important? Probably not to a | :20:35. | :20:42.
lot of people, but a lot of people are very concerned, and they are | :20:42. | :20:45.
firm Christian believers and want to be buried in the Christian | :20:45. | :20:50.
method. The cemetery is am -- the cemetery is managed by Ceredigion | :20:50. | :20:53.
County Council, who says there is no specific legislation regarding | :20:53. | :20:59.
this. Cefn Llan summitry, they say, has been set out to maximise the | :20:59. | :21:04.
use of land, and to reduce costs when preparing graves on a steep | :21:04. | :21:11.
slope. So what do Christian leaders think? I don't think it matters. | :21:11. | :21:16.
The biblical reason is that the Lord Jesus Christ is called the Son | :21:16. | :21:21.
of righteousness, and that he rises with healing in his wings, and | :21:21. | :21:24.
presumably from the east, and therefore that his second coming | :21:24. | :21:29.
would be from the East as well. But as far as I am concerned, I do not | :21:29. | :21:35.
think it matters which way the body faces. | :21:35. | :21:41.
The council does say that it is a section of the cemetery which lies | :21:41. | :21:44.
approximately west to east, and people can ask to be buried there | :21:44. | :21:49.
it that is their wish. Let us return to Twickenham with | :21:49. | :21:59.
:21:59. | :22:00. | ||
more on the big sporting weekend. Head coach of London Welsh is here | :22:00. | :22:04.
now. Thank you very much for coming. Your thoughts ahead of tomorrow - | :22:04. | :22:11.
it is a hard place to come? Wales, maybe for the first time are coming | :22:11. | :22:15.
here as favourites, and they have to deal with expectations of the | :22:15. | :22:20.
Welsh public. Wales do have a little bit of advantage over | :22:20. | :22:26.
England, but it is all on the day. It will be an almost Wressle, but I | :22:26. | :22:31.
think they will be tested. If they can pass the test, you never know. | :22:31. | :22:35.
You are a man who knows the English scene world - have England | :22:35. | :22:40.
impressed you? They say this is their perfect time to face Wales. | :22:40. | :22:46.
They have not impressed me, they have a long way to go. The English | :22:46. | :22:51.
game has a big emphasis on scrum, and very little thought on the | :22:51. | :22:56.
extra skill part of the game which Wales have in abundance. So they | :22:56. | :23:03.
have some key players, and they also have an 8, 9, ten combination, | :23:03. | :23:09.
who are making their very first start for England. When the | :23:09. | :23:14.
pressure comes on, how are they going to deal with that? Wales are | :23:14. | :23:21.
being tipped to win 44 -- by 14. Do you agree? It is going to be tough, | :23:21. | :23:27.
as we all know, and what is important is that at 5:25pm we do | :23:27. | :23:34.
not hear sweet low -- Swing Low, Sweet chariot. | :23:34. | :23:39.
Bent you very much indeed. It is a huge weekend, and the meat | :23:39. | :23:43.
between the sandwich is boxing. Nathan Cleverly will take to the | :23:43. | :23:48.
bring to defend his title in Cardiff tomorrow night. He is | :23:48. | :23:53.
taking on America's Tommy Karpency. The two men come for a deadly met | :23:53. | :24:01.
the 12 stone seven weight limit. Cleverly is beginning to defend his | :24:01. | :24:05.
WBO title, which could pave the way for a fight against a big name like | :24:05. | :24:13.
Bernard Hopkins. He is very placid, but he has come to win. He means | :24:13. | :24:21.
business, and has -- and as his team says, he thinks he is | :24:21. | :24:26.
unbeatable. We want to see a great fight, and that is what we will get. | :24:26. | :24:33.
Let me tell you how your weekend pans out in the sport. It kicks off | :24:33. | :24:43.
:24:43. | :24:58. | ||
Everybody today has said, do they need their coats this weekend? What | :24:58. | :25:08.
:25:08. | :25:11. | ||
A rugby fan on Twitter says there will definitely be dark grey clouds | :25:11. | :25:16.
hanging over Twickenham tomorrow, as Wales win the high-pressure game. | :25:16. | :25:21.
Let us hope he is right. For those of the travelling to Wembley, take | :25:21. | :25:26.
your sunglasses, it will be fine and mild. In Wales, plenty of dry | :25:26. | :25:32.
weather, some cloud, some sunshine, and some ground frost as well. | :25:32. | :25:39.
Tonight, cloudy and damp in the south. North Wales, dry and clearer. | :25:39. | :25:46.
There will be a few mist and fog patches, and fog -- crown frost. | :25:46. | :25:52.
Tomorrow morning seven counties will start of grey, mist and fog in | :25:52. | :26:01.
the Bristol Channel. Dry, Bright, in Powys. During the day tomorrow I | :26:01. | :26:06.
think the whole country will become dry, cloudy in places, bright in | :26:06. | :26:12.
others. The best sunshine, in Powys, Monmouthshire. Temperatures not bad, | :26:12. | :26:19.
it to 11 Celsius. Tomorrow night, dry some cloud, again a few mist | :26:19. | :26:24.
and fog patches. Ground frost likely in mid-Wales. For Sunday, | :26:24. | :26:28.
sunshine for a time in the north and east. Make the most of it. The | :26:28. | :26:36.
Clyde will increase. Spots of light rain and drizzle in Gwynedd and | :26:36. | :26:44.
Conwy. Our picture is of snowdrops in the Wye Valley. | :26:44. | :26:54.
:26:54. | :26:55. | ||
Good luck, Wales, tomorrow. In the past half are, Wales' | :26:55. | :26:58.
assistant football coach has resigned. He has announced on | :26:58. | :27:04.
Twitter that he has had enough of political and destructive games. | :27:04. | :27:08.
Cardiff City head to Wembley on Sunday to face Liverpool in the | :27:08. | :27:12.
Carling Cup. But it all kicks off tomorrow in Twickenham as Wales' | :27:13. | :27:21.
bid for the 20th Triple Crown. We will have more in our late | :27:21. | :27:26.
bulletin. Twickenham has been a happy -- an unhappy hunting ground | :27:26. | :27:30. |
