Welcome to Wales Today, where a homecoming parade is under way to

:00:14.:00:18.

celebrate the achievements of a Libyan said Paralympians. They are

:00:18.:00:23.

on the steps of the Senedd. 68 athletes completed in London, now

:00:23.:00:27.

it is their chance to say thank you for the support, and hundreds have

:00:27.:00:33.

come out to see them. I used to say I do tae kwon do and people said,

:00:33.:00:39.

what's that, but now people say, it's Jade Jones. It's fantastic, to

:00:39.:00:45.

turn round, I know they are proud of us but we are proud of them.

:00:45.:00:49.

see 82,000 people in that stadium cheering for our Paralympians was

:00:49.:00:54.

absolutely fantastic. Nyree Kindred is my second cousin. She had a

:00:54.:01:04.
:01:04.:01:12.

silver medal and I think she did Good evening. Also tonight: Plaid

:01:12.:01:16.

Cymru leader, Leanne Wood, says green energy and innovation are the

:01:16.:01:21.

keys to kick-starting the economy. One year on from the Gleision

:01:21.:01:25.

mining tragedy, coal producers insist safety in the industry as a

:01:25.:01:28.

priority. And the Tour of Britain roles in to

:01:28.:01:32.

Wales, but for some fans with stick-on sideburns, disappointment,

:01:33.:01:42.

Good evening. Welcome to Wales Today Live from Cardiff Bay this

:01:42.:01:47.

evening. What a summer of Sport it was, and the party is continuing

:01:47.:01:51.

tonight. We I hear live for the homecoming parade to celebrate the

:01:51.:01:56.

achievements of our Welsh Olympians and Paralympians. There are cheers

:01:56.:02:00.

on the stage behind me as they are introduced, cheered by hundreds of

:02:01.:02:05.

people on the stage. I am sure like many back home, you were glued to

:02:05.:02:09.

your TV this summer as we watched all the action, we saw them make

:02:09.:02:14.

personal bests, set world records and win medals. I spoke to many of

:02:14.:02:18.

the athletes here this afternoon, who told me it was really important

:02:18.:02:22.

for them to be here tonight. They wanted say thank-you to the Welsh

:02:22.:02:27.

public for their support this summer, and hundreds are here on

:02:27.:02:30.

this bit of living in Cardiff Bay. I have seen children and buggies

:02:30.:02:34.

and elderly gentlemen in their eighties, all here with their

:02:34.:02:38.

cameras to capture that special moment of their favourite Olympian

:02:38.:02:42.

and Paralympian. Ashleigh Crowter is down at the heart of it with the

:02:42.:02:48.

crowd, and he has spoken to some Olympians and Paralympians.

:02:49.:02:53.

That's right. As you say, the athletes are now taking to the

:02:53.:02:58.

stage. The medalists are the last on, and I am here with two of the

:02:58.:03:04.

gents with the most precious metal of the Mall, Mark Goldberg -- Mark

:03:05.:03:09.

Holborn and Tom James. -- Mark Holborn. Have you ever met before?

:03:09.:03:14.

How well do know each other? We are almost passing ships in the night

:03:15.:03:19.

from the Olympics, which was prior to the Paralympics, but it is a

:03:19.:03:23.

pleasure to meet him. Is it an inspiration to meet each other and

:03:23.:03:28.

meet these athletes you have no doubt been inspired by? Definitely.

:03:28.:03:33.

It is great to see, we amalgamated so get there -- together so well.

:03:34.:03:37.

This is a great way to celebrate together and make it a bigger

:03:37.:03:42.

occasion, it is fantastic. I know you said sometimes you find it hard

:03:42.:03:48.

to let your achievements England. Two events like this help? They do.

:03:48.:03:57.

It is a good feeling. We do what we do. Sometimes you say you do it to

:03:57.:03:59.

win for yourself but when you're there it feels like so much more,

:03:59.:04:04.

and the crowds are fantastic, and it is great to come here and other

:04:04.:04:08.

people to Sears, and for us to say thank you, because there are so

:04:08.:04:13.

many aspects to the Olympic Games, and the Paralympic Games, the

:04:13.:04:16.

volunteers and armed forces and everyone who supported us at home,

:04:16.:04:22.

so it is very important. Mark, you became a national hero overnight.

:04:22.:04:25.

What will the impact be on performances -- of performances

:04:25.:04:29.

like Jaws on the perception of sport and how many people take it

:04:29.:04:34.

up? -- like yours. For me as a professional cyclist albeit with a

:04:34.:04:37.

disability, who hopefully what I and Paralympics GB have achieved

:04:37.:04:42.

over the last few weeks can inspire everyone. Right up to my age from

:04:42.:04:47.

young kids, to take up the sports and have a passion. From my side of

:04:47.:04:52.

the fences is all about ability, not disability, so hopefully what I

:04:52.:04:57.

have achieved can inspire people for the future. You have definitely

:04:57.:05:00.

there has been a huge inspiration. You on stage in a few seconds.

:05:00.:05:06.

Thank you and have a great evening. Those are two gold medallist, we

:05:06.:05:10.

will see more of them later in the programme. You were getting in

:05:10.:05:14.

trouble for keeping them talking, they will be on stage for a few

:05:14.:05:18.

minutes. Sara head, who won bronze in the Paralympics, has been called

:05:18.:05:24.

up. Everyone is getting a huge cheer. Many arrived early this

:05:24.:05:27.

afternoon and were inside the Senedd catching up with each other,

:05:27.:05:32.

and I managed to put four together to tell me about their experiences

:05:32.:05:36.

this summer. I don't think I have ever been

:05:36.:05:40.

surrounded by so much silver and gold. Let me introduce you to two

:05:40.:05:45.

Paralympians, Nyree Kindred and Alec Sean Davis, and two Olympians,

:05:45.:05:50.

Chris Bartley and Jade Jones. Let me start with you, Jade. Many of us

:05:50.:05:55.

almost lost on up -- minds that night when you one. Have you relive

:05:55.:06:03.

it time and time again? I remember two minutes ago -- to go, then I am

:06:03.:06:05.

Olympic champion, in tae kwon do anything can happen so when the

:06:05.:06:10.

buzzer went I went crazy. How much has life changed for uses the

:06:10.:06:14.

Olympics? It has changed a lot, just for tae kwon do to be

:06:14.:06:20.

recognised is amazing. It is still not a mainstream sport, so what is

:06:21.:06:25.

your ambition with it? You are on the crest of a wave of Olympic

:06:25.:06:30.

success, but how would you like it to develop and get children

:06:30.:06:35.

involved? I wanted to be as big as other sports. I used to say I do

:06:35.:06:39.

tae kwon do and people would go, what's that, but now they go, it's

:06:39.:06:44.

Jade Jones in the tae kwon do, so I am happy about that. Chris, for you,

:06:44.:06:48.

an incredible silver on the water at Eton Dorney. Take us back to

:06:48.:06:53.

that moment. It is brilliant. I don't remember much of it. You went

:06:53.:06:57.

very well afterwards. Pretty ill, but the main thing I remember is

:06:57.:07:01.

the unbelievable support in the last 500, so noisy, nothing you

:07:01.:07:05.

would expect for a rowing race. I'm really pleased with the result at

:07:05.:07:10.

the end of the day. I know you need a rest but let's look for years

:07:10.:07:15.

ahead. Are you up for Rio? I had a great time at this Olympics, but it

:07:16.:07:19.

is four years, a lot can happen, so many young people are coming

:07:19.:07:24.

through in a sport that could beat me out. I'm sure they won't!

:07:25.:07:28.

Hopefully see you there. For the moment, relish the silver. Nyree

:07:28.:07:34.

Kindred, if I can come to you, a veteran Paralympian, your 4th Games,

:07:34.:07:38.

how was London? Absolutely fantastic, walking out from my race,

:07:38.:07:42.

that gave me the advantage of any Games I have been too, the crowd

:07:42.:07:45.

behind us and my daughter in the crowd spurred me on to swim faster.

:07:45.:07:49.

We saw their heroes Parade, many swimmers in the national pool in

:07:49.:07:54.

Swansea, what reaction are the youngsters giving you? Tickets are

:07:54.:07:58.

loving it and if we can inspire a future generation, that is our aim.

:07:58.:08:02.

Now we have competed in London we can inspire future generation.

:08:02.:08:07.

I really enjoyed watching you. Aled committee were one of my favourite

:08:07.:08:11.

celebration moments, just incredible, I can see you proudly -

:08:11.:08:15.

- Paddy were in a muddle. That discus thrower was unbelievable.

:08:15.:08:20.

was big for me. The Iranian guy had chased me all the way through and

:08:20.:08:24.

pulled at six lifetime bests, which is phenomenal. I knew he wouldn't

:08:24.:08:28.

go out with a fight -- without a fight. It was his 5th game and he

:08:28.:08:33.

won silver every time. I can see how determined you were. How

:08:33.:08:37.

important was having a family on home soil with you? It was my first

:08:37.:08:42.

Games, and a home Games was incredible. My brother came from

:08:42.:08:47.

Australia to see me, which was amazing. It was such an emotional

:08:47.:08:50.

roller-coaster, the whole experience. When I finished

:08:50.:08:54.

competing it was sad, but I was happy. It was an epic journey.

:08:54.:08:57.

you posted any letters from the gold postbox at the end of the

:08:57.:09:02.

street? Not yet. I went home yesterday to see its, but I haven't

:09:02.:09:08.

managed to. You can post Christmas cards from there. I probably will,

:09:08.:09:11.

just for that! Congratulations everybody and have a great evening

:09:11.:09:16.

tonight. Well done. Alex just had the lead most huge

:09:16.:09:20.

cheer as he was introduced on the stage behind me. We will speak to

:09:20.:09:24.

his incredibly proud parents in a moment, but Jason Mohammad is

:09:24.:09:28.

tonight compere of the event. Let's see who he is introducing. Tom

:09:28.:09:38.
:09:38.:09:49.

There he is, you can just see Tom James on the stage now. A huge

:09:49.:09:59.
:09:59.:10:00.

cheer for him as well, and Mark Colbourn, here we go now...

:10:00.:10:05.

We have been waiting all day to see, back in Wales, from the world of

:10:05.:10:12.

tae kwon do, gold medallist, your gold medallist, Jade Jones!

:10:12.:10:22.
:10:22.:10:35.

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, once again, your Olympic and

:10:35.:10:41.

Paralympic champions, Team GB, give them a very warm reception! Welcome

:10:41.:10:51.
:10:51.:10:57.

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE a huge cheer for the Team GB athletes.

:10:57.:11:02.

Very well done. Two people screaming loudly are the parents

:11:02.:11:10.

are valid Sean Davis. Jacquie and you. He was very excited. How has

:11:10.:11:14.

this roller-coaster ride been this summer? Gosh, absolutely amazing.

:11:14.:11:18.

We are a hive. I don't think we will ever come down. We are so

:11:19.:11:23.

proud. You so you -- we saw you both cheering him on and you were

:11:23.:11:28.

very emotional. It was incredible. We were willing him to win and

:11:28.:11:34.

carry on. It is very hard to describe unless you are a parent

:11:34.:11:38.

and you have somebody doing that in front of you, it's awesome. He has

:11:38.:11:44.

worked so hard for this, hasn't he? Very hard, yes. He deserves it and

:11:44.:11:47.

am so pleased. I was thrilled with the bronze, and they thought, great,

:11:48.:11:53.

he's done something he wanted to do, but when he had the gold, oh, my

:11:53.:11:57.

gosh, absolutely fantastic. What was it like watching that moment,

:11:57.:12:02.

breaking world records? I was watching but Jacquie wasn't! I

:12:02.:12:09.

thought I was going to die, so nervous! On that day, a whole arena,

:12:09.:12:15.

80,000 people -- watching Aled and the Iranian, a little cheer went up

:12:15.:12:21.

when the Iranian failed to mates -- to beat Aled, and when Aled through

:12:21.:12:26.

again and threw it another metre, the reef just came off. And he

:12:26.:12:30.

hasn't said he did it, but have you posted letters from the gold

:12:30.:12:35.

postbox? I have, definitely. Enjoyed every minute? Of course, it

:12:35.:12:41.

was wonderful. Lovely to Spytty. The chair of Sport Wales, Laura

:12:41.:12:45.

McAllister is here. Alec's parents are very proud, but this is a

:12:45.:12:49.

celebration for all the Welsh athletes. I am as proud of Aled as

:12:49.:12:53.

his parents. It is fantastic to see so many people come up to say thank

:12:53.:12:58.

you for bringing incredible joy to us this summer, and it is up to us

:12:58.:13:01.

for -- to make the most of it and build on the legacy and ensure

:13:01.:13:05.

children have the opportunity people like Josie, Aled and Mark

:13:05.:13:10.

Colbourne have had. Thank you. Much more from here and the steps of the

:13:10.:13:13.

Senedd in Cardiff Bay and a Welsh athletes a little later in the

:13:13.:13:18.

Good evening. At Plaid Cymru's annual conference, party leader

:13:18.:13:21.

Leanne Wood has promised a Green New Deal to rejuvenate the Welsh

:13:21.:13:25.

economy. She told delegates in Brecon that the country is being

:13:25.:13:27.

held back by "economic underdevelopment". Our political

:13:28.:13:37.

editor Betsan Powys is there. Thank you. It has been a busy day

:13:37.:13:42.

in Brecon, a busy political day. Leanne Wood using a first

:13:42.:13:46.

opportunity to talk to delegates at the look -- at the annual

:13:46.:13:51.

conference. They had been other attractions in town as well.

:13:51.:13:57.

Following them all was our political reporter, Carl Roberts.

:13:57.:14:00.

The flags were out in force and Brecon today although it was the

:14:00.:14:03.

tour of Britain thundering through the town that brought the people

:14:03.:14:10.

out. The cyclist had left by the time the main conference attraction

:14:10.:14:15.

to to the stage at a Theatr Brycheiniog. Leanne Wood has been

:14:15.:14:20.

in her job for six months and lot of her time has been taken

:14:20.:14:30.
:14:30.:14:33.

reorganising her party. On stage today her message was not aimed for

:14:33.:14:43.
:14:43.:14:45.

the members. What you see and what you hear is what you get with me. I

:14:45.:14:54.

promise that is my last joke before I address you all. The views from

:14:54.:14:59.

appear stretch for miles into the heart of Wales. It is there that

:14:59.:15:02.

Leanne Wood's focusing her attention and she looks the

:15:02.:15:07.

solutions to the problems facing the Welsh economy. She has taken

:15:07.:15:14.

inspiration from 1930s America. She is launching a new deal for Wales.

:15:14.:15:20.

Wales needs jobs. There is plenty of work that needs doing. Like

:15:20.:15:23.

President Roosevelt and his economic plans in the USA of the

:15:23.:15:30.

30s, Wales needs a new New Deal, a Green New Deal. It was a lot -- a

:15:30.:15:40.
:15:40.:15:41.

speech light on detail. They will be years of door knocking, to

:15:41.:15:45.

eating, a million conversations in order for her party to govern. For

:15:45.:15:49.

Leanne Wood the one conversation is over, for her party there are

:15:49.:15:55.

plenty more to come. Before Leanne Wood had to leave

:15:55.:15:58.

Brecon and hotfoot it to joining the celebrations with the Olympians

:15:58.:16:03.

and Paralympians in Cardiff Bay, I managed to catch up with them and

:16:03.:16:07.

ask why it was she had concentrated and focused so exclusively on the

:16:07.:16:13.

economy and on jobs. It is clear that whenever you -- wherever you

:16:13.:16:17.

go people's main concern is the problem with the economy. People

:16:17.:16:27.
:16:27.:16:28.

are struggling to put food on the table and pay their bills. 24% of

:16:28.:16:32.

youth unemployment is in Wales and it is imperative we put our efforts

:16:32.:16:38.

into creating jobs and hope for young people for the future. What

:16:38.:16:41.

about the Green New Deal? It is a slogan but I don't know what it

:16:41.:16:46.

means. It means creating jobs in the green sector, it means building

:16:46.:16:51.

and resilience in our economy by creating more renewable energy and

:16:51.:16:56.

producing more food. It does mean that there will be a jobs scheme

:16:57.:17:01.

for young people and jobs created which is what we need as a do you

:17:01.:17:05.

accept that Plaid Cymru had a long way to go to persuade voters in

:17:05.:17:09.

Wales that you do hold the key to the economy before they are

:17:09.:17:14.

persuaded to vote for you again? have got to do that were,

:17:14.:17:18.

persuading people and making sure that they understand what our

:17:18.:17:22.

programme is. A week is a long time in politics a four years as a very

:17:23.:17:27.

long time and that means we have the time to do this work. When we

:17:27.:17:31.

do it will deliver the results we want. No talk of independence in

:17:31.:17:36.

your speech, is it because it is a battle lost? Everybody understands

:17:36.:17:40.

what our position is on independence. People want to hear

:17:40.:17:44.

from Plaid Cymru about what we intend to do about the current

:17:44.:17:51.

economic situation. We will hear of it again? Yes, you will hear of it

:17:51.:17:57.

again. As Leanne Wood and said, the next Welsh elections and not until

:17:57.:18:01.

2016 bits you be aware that by then she will have to find some ways of

:18:01.:18:08.

closing this deal that was on offer today. Delegates will be back here

:18:09.:18:12.

in Theatr Brycheiniog tomorrow. If you want to watch proceedings live

:18:12.:18:18.

you can tune in to BBC Two at 2 o'clock. We will be live between 2

:18:18.:18:22.

o'clock and four o'clock tomorrow. But from Brecon, back to you in

:18:22.:18:26.

Cardiff. It's a year since four men died in

:18:26.:18:30.

the Gleision mining tragedy in the Swansea Valley. A collapse in a

:18:30.:18:33.

small drift mine a shocking reminder of the dangers of the

:18:33.:18:36.

industry. Also a reminder that a coal industry still exists here,

:18:36.:18:44.

employing around 1,200 people. Nick Servini reports. The desperate

:18:44.:18:50.

rescue attempts formed part of the long and sometimes tragic history

:18:50.:18:54.

of coal mining in Wales. But small drift mines like Gleision without

:18:54.:19:02.

large machinery are now few and far between. A very sad and the

:19:02.:19:07.

unfortunate incident. But I think it has to be said that the Gleision

:19:08.:19:14.

mind was not representative of what we do in deep mining in the UK

:19:15.:19:18.

today or even in South Wales. Safety is less of an issue for most

:19:18.:19:23.

Welsh mining now as its overwhelmingly carried out on

:19:23.:19:28.

opencast sites. Whether from the surface and underground, finding

:19:28.:19:33.

people to sell coal to is not a problem with the Port Talbot

:19:33.:19:36.

steelworks and the Aberthaw power station in the Vale of Glamorgan,

:19:36.:19:42.

both massive coal burners. For a mind like this in any family having

:19:42.:19:47.

such major customers virtually on his doorstep is a big advantage. As

:19:47.:19:51.

ever with the coal industry it is all about the cost of getting at it

:19:51.:19:55.

compared with the price you can sell it. Currently, there is it

:19:55.:20:00.

global surplus of coal which has driven the price down. The company

:20:00.:20:05.

here says 90 jobs are at risk. Where does that leave the future?

:20:05.:20:10.

The chairman of Tower Colliery which was the last deep pit in

:20:10.:20:15.

Wales believes it is promising. have got the cold, we have got the

:20:15.:20:20.

market. All we need to do, if we wanted to, is get their minds. At

:20:20.:20:27.

the moment I see the next 10 years in place. Coal-mining in Wales is

:20:27.:20:31.

changing and growing. The only place in Britain where production

:20:31.:20:34.

has increased this year. Nick Servini on the state of the

:20:34.:20:38.

coal industry in Wales. On Monday we'll hear from families who lost

:20:38.:20:41.

loved ones at Gleision here on Wales Today and on a special Week

:20:41.:20:46.

In Week Out that's at 8.30pm. Three people have been treated in

:20:46.:20:49.

hospital after an outbreak of Legionnaires' disease in Carmarthen.

:20:49.:20:51.

It's contracted by breathing in droplets from contaminated water

:20:51.:20:56.

and can be fatal. Health officials say they're trying to identify the

:20:56.:21:00.

source. The cases all have links to the town but are no longer in

:21:00.:21:05.

hospital. The commissioners helping run

:21:05.:21:07.

Anglesey Council are recommending the Welsh Government cuts the level

:21:07.:21:16.

Some of the world's best cyclists have spent the day racing through

:21:16.:21:18.

Wales as the Tour of Britain continues. But Bradley Wiggins, The

:21:18.:21:21.
