Welcome to Wales Today. Our top story: | :00:08. | :00:11.
Severe gales and heavy rain cause widespread disruption across the | :00:12. | :00:14.
country. Roads, rail and ferry services are badly hit. A warning | :00:15. | :00:25.
tonight of more to come. In the rain will follow pretty soon. We are not | :00:26. | :00:28.
out of the woods, there will be more rain coming today and rivers will | :00:29. | :00:30.
rise in response to that rainfall. On one of the busiest travel days of | :00:31. | :00:34.
the year, the severe weather hasn't finished with us yet. | :00:35. | :00:47.
Our other headlines tonight: David and Astrid have both been | :00:48. | :00:52.
turned down for cancer drugs. Calls tonight for patients to be told why | :00:53. | :00:56.
they're refused the treatment they ask for. | :00:57. | :00:58.
Will your Christmas presents be genuine or fakes? We report on the | :00:59. | :01:03.
counterfeit goods being sold to thousands of customers. | :01:04. | :01:10.
And in tonight's sport: It looked like goodbye for Malky | :01:11. | :01:13.
Mackay, but tonight he's still in charge at Cardiff City. | :01:14. | :01:16.
He'll meet with the man who threatened to sacked him later this | :01:17. | :01:18.
week Good evening. Good evening. Some NHS patients are | :01:19. | :01:31.
being turned down for specialist treatment without any explanation. | :01:32. | :01:38.
That's according to the Board of Community Health Councils in Wales. | :01:39. | :01:41.
It also says doctors are failing to have "difficult conversations" with | :01:42. | :01:43.
patients about some life-extending medicines which may not be suitable | :01:44. | :01:50.
for them. Paul Heaney reports. David Spink has looked after his | :01:51. | :01:55.
wife Astrid for 20 years during her treatment for cancer. But in 2011, | :01:56. | :02:00.
he was diagnosed as well. Regular treatment has not been working. His | :02:01. | :02:05.
consultant says applying for specialist drugs which are not | :02:06. | :02:08.
routinely available on the NHS was his last hope. I got a phone call | :02:09. | :02:17.
them saying they had had a reply from the relevant board and I had | :02:18. | :02:23.
been turned down. Did they say why? No, they just said no. He is my life | :02:24. | :02:31.
and I hated, when there is something there and he cannot have it -- I | :02:32. | :02:37.
hate it. David Astrid used forms like this to apply for the | :02:38. | :02:40.
specialist medicine. They offer treatments that are not routinely | :02:41. | :02:46.
available on the NHS and are not proven to work with everybody, and | :02:47. | :02:49.
can be very expensive. It is not just cancer drugs. Requests can also | :02:50. | :02:54.
be made for specialist operations as well, but if those requests are | :02:55. | :03:00.
rejected, patients are not told why. People receive their rejection for | :03:01. | :03:03.
their request and they don't understand why. They can't related | :03:04. | :03:11.
to what they have seen and heard of -- relate it. And their expectation | :03:12. | :03:17.
to how it could help them. And it needs to change. Several council | :03:18. | :03:23.
said no to a greater proportions of request than the year before. Some | :03:24. | :03:27.
did not provide us with data we request than the year before. Some | :03:28. | :03:30.
did not provide could provide between one year and another. But | :03:31. | :03:36.
medical experts say comparing the figures is difficult because each | :03:37. | :03:41.
case is unique. We haven't got an open budget, and if you take money | :03:42. | :03:44.
away from the general budget, somebody else has to do without. You | :03:45. | :03:49.
are talking quite often hear in terms of very expensive drugs with | :03:50. | :03:51.
an improved track record and possible side-effects, and it is a | :03:52. | :03:58.
judgement that has been made -- without a proven track record. The | :03:59. | :04:05.
Welsh Government says individual patient requests and the system that | :04:06. | :04:08.
David and Astrid have been through is generally working effectively, | :04:09. | :04:13.
but it is considering further improvements to transparency, | :04:14. | :04:16.
consistency and communication with patients. For now, David and Astrid | :04:17. | :04:20.
are trying to make the most of the time they have together. Perhaps | :04:21. | :04:23.
something will come along or change and I will get the treatment, I just | :04:24. | :04:31.
live in hope. A woman from Treharris, in Merthyr | :04:32. | :04:34.
Tydfil, has pleaded guilty to stealing more than ?7,500 from | :04:35. | :04:37.
families who were saving for Christmas. Joanne Jones took money | :04:38. | :04:40.
from friends and relatives, who thought they were paying into the | :04:41. | :04:44.
Park Christmas Savings scheme. She pleaded guilty to 18 counts of theft | :04:45. | :04:48.
and is due to be sentenced in January. | :04:49. | :04:51.
A mental health ward at Glan Clwyd Hospital, in Bodelwyddan, has been | :04:52. | :04:54.
closed temporarily following concerns about patient care. An | :04:55. | :04:57.
investigation is said to be in its early stages and North Wales Police | :04:58. | :05:00.
have confirmed that they have been informed. The Betsi Cadwaldr Health | :05:01. | :05:07.
Board says, a small number of patients are affected and they are | :05:08. | :05:11.
being cared for elsewhere. Campaigners are taking legal action | :05:12. | :05:14.
over the Health Minister's decision to approve the closure of the | :05:15. | :05:17.
specialist baby care unit at Withybush Hospital in Haverfordwest. | :05:18. | :05:23.
An application is being made for a judicial review after Mark Drakeford | :05:24. | :05:26.
gave the go-ahead to the Hywel Dda health board's plans. Opponents | :05:27. | :05:34.
claim the changes could put patients in danger. The Welsh Government says | :05:35. | :05:38.
it would be inappropriate to comment. | :05:39. | :05:42.
The Christmas getaway has been hit by flooding and travel disruption, | :05:43. | :05:44.
as galeforce winds and torrential rain sweep across the country. There | :05:45. | :05:48.
have been widespread delays and cancellations on the trains in the | :05:49. | :05:51.
south Wales valleys. Roads across Wales have been blocked by fallen | :05:52. | :05:55.
trees and flooding. The strongest gust of wind was recorded at Capel | :05:56. | :05:59.
Curig, in Snowdonia, as gusts hit 87mph. Forecasters are warning | :06:00. | :06:04.
there's more to come. Nick Palit reports. | :06:05. | :06:12.
Roads turn into streams, field into lakes, such was the force of the | :06:13. | :06:17.
downpours across Wales. All of this on one of the busiest travel days of | :06:18. | :06:20.
the year, as families get together for the festive season. On the | :06:21. | :06:25.
motorways, there were warnings of poor driving conditions, with | :06:26. | :06:29.
visibility hampered by heavy spray from lorries. Train services also | :06:30. | :06:32.
said that because of the weather, with major delays between London and | :06:33. | :06:38.
South Wales. Passengers travelling to Cardiff last minute shopping | :06:39. | :06:41.
found they could not get home because of flooding on parts of the | :06:42. | :06:45.
Valley lines. Replacement buses were laid on to bypass the areas of | :06:46. | :06:53.
submerged track. We have had to catch the train bus, instead of the | :06:54. | :06:57.
train up to Mountain Ash, because it won't go there. We have had to get a | :06:58. | :07:03.
bust out and have been delayed 30 minutes. A bit confusing with the | :07:04. | :07:08.
fact that there wasn't much communication on train platforms. | :07:09. | :07:10.
Things are not matching up, it seems a bit amateurish. I am a taxi driver | :07:11. | :07:19.
and we have done really, really well because of the weather. With coastal | :07:20. | :07:23.
communities right around Wales experiencing treacherous weather, | :07:24. | :07:27.
sea crossings were also cancelled. The ferry companies say they will do | :07:28. | :07:32.
all they can to get people to Holyhead on the next available | :07:33. | :07:35.
ferries. It is the coastal areas in the south bearing the brunt of the | :07:36. | :07:39.
storms. Galeforce winds and torrential rain, like here in | :07:40. | :07:44.
Swansea Marina. Also in Swansea, the waterfront funfair, set up | :07:45. | :07:46.
especially for Christmas revellers, remained closed for most of the day. | :07:47. | :07:53.
There were four warnings in Monmouthshire and gadfly. Speak your | :07:54. | :08:01.
the best advice we can give anyone is to be careful. -- the best advice | :08:02. | :08:06.
we can give anyone is to be careful, you don't know what is hidden | :08:07. | :08:09.
beneath the surface of flood water, so keep your family and yourself | :08:10. | :08:12.
safe. Across the country, flash floods and | :08:13. | :08:19.
damage. I will have do call an emergency meeting of the committee | :08:20. | :08:21.
and it will have to be a committee decision as to where we go from | :08:22. | :08:25.
here, because the building is not in use and there is a bit of | :08:26. | :08:28.
controversy about what you're going to do with the building in the | :08:29. | :08:33.
future. At the weather station at Capel Curig, wind speeds of 87 mph | :08:34. | :08:37.
were recorded and forecasters are predicting more of the same over the | :08:38. | :08:42.
coming days. At this outpost in Wales, winds reaching around 70 | :08:43. | :08:48.
mph, and on the West Coast, gusts have reached up to 90 mph. The best | :08:49. | :08:52.
advice during this festive season is to stay indoors and keep warm. | :08:53. | :09:01.
Let's have a word with Derek. We can see the reason for all of this on a | :09:02. | :09:04.
graphics. Yes, it is all down to this deep | :09:05. | :09:08.
area of low pressure which has been moving in from the Atlantic during | :09:09. | :09:11.
the day. It is an intense area of low pressure driven by a very | :09:12. | :09:16.
powerful jet stream am a 30,000 feet above the ground, and this deep area | :09:17. | :09:23.
of low pressure, as we know, has brought heavy rain and galeforce | :09:24. | :09:26.
winds. That shows it spinning through the country today, heaviest | :09:27. | :09:30.
on the high ground in the south, the Brecon Beacons, and it did ease off | :09:31. | :09:34.
through this afternoon but you can see more rain in the South. And with | :09:35. | :09:39.
the ground already saturated from previous rainfall earlier in the | :09:40. | :09:42.
month, we have seen some flooding today and many rivers swollen. | :09:43. | :09:49.
And there is more to come? There is. Another band of heavy rain | :09:50. | :09:52.
will move through Wales tomorrow. Tomorrow will be dry, so some good | :09:53. | :09:55.
news, but we have to look out for strong to galeforce winds, Saville | :09:56. | :09:59.
gave force winds of the south-west tomorrow, and Boxing Day into | :10:00. | :10:04.
Friday, it looks like another Atlantic storm is heading our way. | :10:05. | :10:09.
We will have a detailed forecast later, the moment, thank very much. | :10:10. | :10:13.
An investigation is underway after a woman died in Bethesda, in Gwynedd, | :10:14. | :10:16.
earlier today. Police, the fire service and mountain rescue teams | :10:17. | :10:19.
were called to Nant Ffrancon just before four o'clock, following | :10:20. | :10:23.
reports of a woman in a river. She was pronounced dead at the scene. | :10:24. | :10:28.
?3 billion. That's how much UK shoppers will have spent today, on | :10:29. | :10:31.
the busiest shopping day of the year. After a slow start to the | :10:32. | :10:34.
festive season, retailers across Wales have seen sales pick up. | :10:35. | :10:38.
Big-name retailers have also avoided a pre-Christmas slump by starting | :10:39. | :10:41.
their sales early, as Matt Murray reports. | :10:42. | :10:48.
It's called Manic Monday. Hundreds of thousands of shoppers have hit | :10:49. | :10:51.
the high streets across Wales in that last-minute dash to pick up | :10:52. | :10:56.
gifts, food and drink. Even with an increase again in online sales, it | :10:57. | :10:59.
seems consumers still go right to wire when it comes to Christmas. | :11:00. | :11:06.
Probably double the sort of normal Monday sales and probably even | :11:07. | :11:12.
double what we were last Monday, even though that was quite close to | :11:13. | :11:17.
Christmas as well. A lot of people do leave things right until the last | :11:18. | :11:19.
minute. At this ladies boutique in Bangor, | :11:20. | :11:22.
they've seen that growth in consumer confidence. I feel a bit more | :11:23. | :11:28.
buoyancy and people are a little bit more positive and more willing to | :11:29. | :11:33.
spend. Despite a slow start to the festive shopping season, in | :11:34. | :11:35.
Carmarthen, businesses were also benefitting from the last-minute | :11:36. | :11:38.
rush. Many on the hunt for a bargain, with major names in the | :11:39. | :11:41.
high street already launching their winter sales early in a desperate | :11:42. | :11:44.
attempt to beat a pre-Christmas slump. In Cardiff, there were | :11:45. | :11:48.
savings of up to 50% in many of the shops as the sales started early. | :11:49. | :11:57.
With Christmas falling mid week this year, it is believed that many | :11:58. | :12:00.
people have started their holidays early, taking today and tomorrow | :12:01. | :12:04.
off, so this is expected to be the busiest shopping day of the year, | :12:05. | :12:09.
with UK consumer spending ?15,000 per second. That was evident this | :12:10. | :12:15.
jewellers. At People were queuing for an hour and a half just to get | :12:16. | :12:19.
into the shop. In recent years, there's also been a growth in pop-up | :12:20. | :12:23.
shops. Ener Chi is a family run business. They've decided to take | :12:24. | :12:26.
out a short-term lease to benefit from the Christmas rush. I don't | :12:27. | :12:30.
think it would be viable to rent the shop throughout the year, because it | :12:31. | :12:36.
will have times when overheads will not be enough, but it is the perfect | :12:37. | :12:44.
opportunity, for a pop-up who want to come out for six pop-up who want | :12:45. | :12:46.
to come out the six-month policy where their products and services | :12:47. | :12:49.
are in relation to people. So if shops were panicking about profits, | :12:50. | :12:52.
now panic buying seems to have brought a bit of festive cheer. | :12:53. | :12:55.
Matt Murray reporting. Our Economics Correspondent Sarah Dickins is in | :12:56. | :12:58.
the middle of the late-night shoppers in Cardiff's City Centre. | :12:59. | :13:02.
Lots of money being spent there tonight, presumably? There | :13:03. | :13:09.
definitely is, and this place has incredibly sophisticated technology, | :13:10. | :13:11.
so it knows how many people have actually been shopping here today | :13:12. | :13:16.
and how much they spend. Basically, a quarter of a million people have | :13:17. | :13:19.
come through here today and you can see a steady flow of people are | :13:20. | :13:23.
still coming shopping. To give you an idea of the perspective of that, | :13:24. | :13:27.
that is 100,000 more than you would get on a busy Saturday, and they | :13:28. | :13:31.
really are spending money this year. Most of the shops here are | :13:32. | :13:35.
saying they have had record days, either today or on Saturday, and it | :13:36. | :13:40.
is interesting what they are buying, the areas that have done | :13:41. | :13:44.
particularly well our jewellery, budget and expensive, and one shop | :13:45. | :13:48.
then there has a queue outside, there are so many, and security | :13:49. | :13:52.
guards are you letting in a few at a time. The other area is games | :13:53. | :13:56.
consoles, tablet and technology, really, they are the areas that in | :13:57. | :13:59.
Wales seem to be selling very well this season rapidly Christmas. We | :14:00. | :14:07.
can see Cardiff is heaving, but what about the wider picture in Wales? | :14:08. | :14:12.
Well, we might think this is ours, it is Wales, but with should also | :14:13. | :14:16.
remember people come here regularly as far away as Cheltenham and even | :14:17. | :14:21.
Plymouth, so this is a good barometer of the UK. The average | :14:22. | :14:29.
spend seems to be about ?820 on Christmas, with ?600 of that on | :14:30. | :14:33.
gifts, and that is about ?50 each more than we did last year. Why does | :14:34. | :14:37.
that matter? For various reasons, really. One is it is a really good | :14:38. | :14:42.
indicator about how we all feel about the economy, whether we feel | :14:43. | :14:45.
confident that we will earn money next year to the same level as this | :14:46. | :14:49.
year, so it is important from that point of view. But also, one in | :14:50. | :14:53.
every ten working people is now working in this sector, the retail | :14:54. | :14:56.
sector, so it matters for their future jobs as well. Sarah, don't | :14:57. | :15:01.
forget my present. Thank you very much. | :15:02. | :15:04.
As shoppers across Wales rush to buy last-minute Christmas gifts, there | :15:05. | :15:06.
are warnings tonight that parts of the country are being inundated with | :15:07. | :15:09.
counterfeit goods, because they're being sold openly across the border | :15:10. | :15:13.
in England. Trading Standards officers recently seized hundreds of | :15:14. | :15:16.
items in one operation with a street value of tens of thousands of | :15:17. | :15:20.
pounds. They're warning the problem is getting worse. Jenny Rees | :15:21. | :15:24.
reports. Big names. Designer labels. They | :15:25. | :15:28.
pride themselves on quality products, finished to a high | :15:29. | :15:33.
standard. The high street puts in a lot of effort to draw us in and | :15:34. | :15:37.
spend. Then there's the other end of the spectrum. Fakes. Badly made and | :15:38. | :15:44.
poorly packaged. This stash of goods was seized by Caerphilly Trading | :15:45. | :15:46.
Standards during a recent operation with Gwent Police. | :15:47. | :15:49.
Hair straighteners, shoes, make up, headphones, jewellery, sweaters. | :15:50. | :15:53.
Four people were arrested and around 500 items seized, with a street | :15:54. | :16:00.
value of ?15,000 to ?20,000. And this is just the tip of the iceberg. | :16:01. | :16:08.
Our specific problem here in south-east Wales is the availability | :16:09. | :16:12.
of the product, quite openly across the border in the south-west of | :16:13. | :16:20.
England. And it means an awful lot of people travelling 30 minutes, | :16:21. | :16:32.
picking up impunity really, these counterfeit goods, and bringing them | :16:33. | :16:34.
back to sell them here. The growth area for selling these | :16:35. | :16:37.
goods is on social media websites like Facebook. Investigators here in | :16:38. | :16:40.
Caerphilly, working on behalf of a group of big brands, have just | :16:41. | :16:44.
helped take down 650 sellers online, right across the UK. The money that | :16:45. | :16:49.
you are paying to a counterfeiter isn't going to the retail trade, it | :16:50. | :16:54.
isn't going towards the economy. It is also funding other criminal | :16:55. | :16:58.
activity. There are clear links between counterfeiting and drug | :16:59. | :17:00.
trafficking, drug supply on the economy. It is also funding other | :17:01. | :17:02.
criminal activity. There are clear links between counterfeiting and | :17:03. | :17:04.
drug trafficking, drug supply, strays locally, nationally and | :17:05. | :17:05.
internationally. People trafficking. There is a whole host | :17:06. | :17:08.
of activity undertaken by people who are using the funds they collect | :17:09. | :17:10.
from counterfeiting to fund criminality. But is the offer of a | :17:11. | :17:15.
cheap product, genuine or not, still tempting? Not if I knew it was | :17:16. | :17:21.
counterfeit but some of them are so realistic now, I would find it hard | :17:22. | :17:26.
to know if it was real or not. Have you bought counterfeit things? I | :17:27. | :17:31.
have. Her straighteners, make-up, that sort of thing. I would be | :17:32. | :17:37.
afraid of any sort of skin condition you would have, would electrical | :17:38. | :17:41.
equipment be saved? I think I would be cautious. It might not work, not | :17:42. | :17:47.
the real thing, and you spend your money you may as well go out and get | :17:48. | :17:49.
the real thing. As for those found selling | :17:50. | :17:52.
counterfeits, the consequences can be tough. Large fines or up to ten | :17:53. | :17:57.
years in prison. 33 jobs have been lost after Arriva | :17:58. | :18:00.
Buses Wales scrapped three services and closed four depots in | :18:01. | :18:03.
Aberystwyth, New Quay, Lampeter and Dolgellau. The company blames cuts | :18:04. | :18:06.
in public transport funding and rising fuel costs. The Welsh | :18:07. | :18:11.
Government is now funding the three routes. They're being run by other | :18:12. | :18:15.
companies until next June, while a longer term solution is sought. | :18:16. | :18:21.
Where you don't have a train service, as in this part between | :18:22. | :18:24.
Aberystwyth and Carmarthen, you have to have a bus service, so these | :18:25. | :18:30.
services are important locally but they are important economically in | :18:31. | :18:33.
this part of the world, for tourism but also for the university towns | :18:34. | :18:38.
and also in enabling people who live in rural areas to get into their | :18:39. | :18:41.
centres of employment in Aberystwyth and Carmarthen. | :18:42. | :18:43.
A 13th century garden in Denbighshire will be opened up to | :18:44. | :18:46.
the public for the first time thanks to a ?170,000 restoration grant. The | :18:47. | :18:55.
grade II-listed Lord's Garden. -- in Ruthin, will open in 2015, once | :18:56. | :18:57.
conservation work using Heritage Lottery funding is completed. It's | :18:58. | :19:02.
believed the garden was once part of a medieval castle. | :19:03. | :19:05.
The season of peace and goodwill to all men seems to have even reached | :19:06. | :19:08.
Cardiff City Football Club. Here's Claire with tonight's sport. | :19:09. | :19:12.
Thank you very much. Good evening. Malky Mackay is still in charge at | :19:13. | :19:15.
Cardiff City and will have face-to-face talks with the owner | :19:16. | :19:18.
who wanted to sack him later this week. The 41-year-old Scot said | :19:19. | :19:21.
today he'd been deeply upset by Vincent Tan's email asking him to | :19:22. | :19:25.
resign, but as far as he was concerned he was the right man to | :19:26. | :19:28.
lead Cardiff and was 100% committed to doing his job. | :19:29. | :19:37.
On Saturday, it looks like Malky Mackay had bid farewell to Cardiff | :19:38. | :19:41.
City. A final thank you to fans for their continuous and loyal support, | :19:42. | :19:45.
with the threat of resign or be sacked hanging over his head, his | :19:46. | :19:51.
days at the club looked numbered. But with owner Vincent Tan now ready | :19:52. | :19:55.
to talk, Malky Mackay is still in charge, and today, he spoke honestly | :19:56. | :19:58.
about how the last few days had affected him. I was given an email | :19:59. | :20:08.
which deeply upset me by the owner. It was suggesting I either resign or | :20:09. | :20:15.
be sacked. And as I politely declined to resign, I wants to be | :20:16. | :20:22.
the manager here, I am proud to be the manager here, and I think the | :20:23. | :20:26.
players, supporters and staff are all backing the one way forward. So | :20:27. | :20:32.
I will keep doing what I'm doing and don't change that. Malky Mackay says | :20:33. | :20:37.
he has been overwhelmed by the support he has received from all | :20:38. | :20:41.
levels in the footballing world. If Vincent Tan was uncertain about how | :20:42. | :20:44.
fans were feeling, they made things very clear the him at the weekend. | :20:45. | :20:49.
And working behind-the-scenes is the chairman, who has been the middleman | :20:50. | :20:54.
trying to engineer a reconciliation. He has postponed a Christmas break | :20:55. | :20:58.
to try and help find a resolution. I have been asked if I would meet the | :20:59. | :21:08.
owner, which is absolutely something that I will do for the good of the | :21:09. | :21:11.
club and the good of us all going forward. I think that should be | :21:12. | :21:17.
sooner rather than later, and I certainly wanted that meeting to be | :21:18. | :21:23.
today. Unfortunately, that was declined, and if not today, then | :21:24. | :21:27.
tomorrow, but unfortunately that has also been declined. So after that, | :21:28. | :21:31.
we are talking about Christmas day and then there is a game day, so | :21:32. | :21:34.
unfortunately it will probably not be until the end of the week. There | :21:35. | :21:39.
are talks of a bluebirds protest ahead of their match with | :21:40. | :21:43.
Southampton on Boxing Day, but fans are being urged to keep a cool | :21:44. | :21:47.
head. After the turmoil of the last week, many will be hoping for some | :21:48. | :21:51.
pieces Christmas-time and that the men that led them into football's | :21:52. | :21:54.
top flight is still in charge come the New Year. -- the man. | :21:55. | :21:59.
So next up for Cardiff is Southampton. Meanwhile, Swansea City | :22:00. | :22:04.
have an anxious wait for news on striker Michu. They are awaiting | :22:05. | :22:10.
results of a scan on his ankle injury, but fear he may need surgery | :22:11. | :22:14.
and could face a long spell on the sidelines. He missed yesterday's | :22:15. | :22:17.
defeat by Everton. Swansea are away to Chelsea on Boxing Day. | :22:18. | :22:20.
Rugby and with the New Year's Eeve deadline looming for the regions to | :22:21. | :22:23.
sign a new participation agreement, Scarlets fly-half Rhys Priestland | :22:24. | :22:26.
has admitted it's very difficult for players to decide what to do when | :22:27. | :22:29.
their contracts run out next summer. Leicester have contacted him over a | :22:30. | :22:33.
move, but he says he's not made his mind up yet. | :22:34. | :22:36.
News tonight, just to let you know the Boxing Day fixture at Force lass | :22:37. | :22:42.
is in doubt. There will be an early inspection. Chepstow is race of all | :22:43. | :22:45.
right now but they are monitoring the situation ahead of the Welsh | :22:46. | :22:48.
National on Saturday. Let's find out what we can expect over the | :22:49. | :22:52.
Christmas break. A real mix, some sunshine as the | :22:53. | :22:56.
good news but also a few soggy pitches and not much, if any snow. | :22:57. | :23:02.
But in the next 24 hours, there is more severe weather to come. Heavy | :23:03. | :23:06.
tonight and drier tomorrow, but with severe gales. The heaviest rain is | :23:07. | :23:13.
in the south, and amber warning is in force until six o'clock tomorrow | :23:14. | :23:26.
morning. There is also a yellow warning in force for strong winds. | :23:27. | :23:29.
Severe gales in the north-west tomorrow, with gusts between 50 and | :23:30. | :23:32.
75mph. The highest gust recorded today was 87mph at Capel Curig at | :23:33. | :23:34.
midday. 68mph at Mumbles There's more information on the | :23:35. | :23:43.
Natural Resources Wales website. The Floodline number is 0845 988 1188. | :23:44. | :23:46.
This evening, more rain will spread across the country. Again, some of | :23:47. | :23:49.
it heavy, with flooding in places. After midnight, the rain will clear | :23:50. | :23:53.
to showers. The strong to galeforce wind easing a little and turning | :23:54. | :23:59.
colder. The showers turning wintry on high ground, with temperatures | :24:00. | :24:02.
inland falling as low as one Celsius. Tomorrow's chart shows a | :24:03. | :24:05.
deep area of low pressure close to north-west Scotland. Lots of isobars | :24:06. | :24:08.
and that means strong to severe galeforce winds. Here's the picture | :24:09. | :24:12.
for 8am. Some dry and clear weather but not dry everywhere. There will | :24:13. | :24:19.
be showers around. The showers are heavy in places with hail and wintry | :24:20. | :24:23.
on higher ground. Also windy. Gales on the coast. Stormy in the | :24:24. | :24:29.
north-west and feeling cold. So drier weather for us tomorrow, some | :24:30. | :24:33.
sunshine, but with blustery showers as well. These are heavy in places, | :24:34. | :24:37.
and wintry on higher ground with sleet and snow. Slight accumulations | :24:38. | :24:41.
of snow likely on ground above 300 metres, or 1,000 feet. Colder than | :24:42. | :24:48.
today, with a strong to galeforce south-westerly wind, severe gales in | :24:49. | :24:58.
the north-west. Christmas Eve, night the wind will gradually ease with | :24:59. | :25:01.
further showers. Some heavy and prolonged with a wintry mix of rain, | :25:02. | :25:05.
hail and sleet and snow on higher ground. Christmas Day much calmer. | :25:06. | :25:08.
Some showers around. These wintry on high ground. A little snow on some | :25:09. | :25:12.
hills and mountains but some dry, bright weather as well. Feeling on | :25:13. | :25:15.
the chilly side but with much lighter winds. Boxing Day, a few | :25:16. | :25:19.
showers in the south and west. These mainly of rain. Otherwise, dry with | :25:20. | :25:21.
some sunshine. Temperatures around average. On Boxing day night into | :25:22. | :25:26.
Friday, the weather is set to go downhill again. Another deep low | :25:27. | :25:30.
bringing another dose of heavy rain and gales. We could see further | :25:31. | :25:37.
disruption and flooding later on in the week. Our picture tonight is | :25:38. | :25:41.
from Simon Jackson. The River Usk in Brecon very swollen this afternoon. | :25:42. | :25:48.
More rain heavy tonight. Drier tomorrow with heavy showers and | :25:49. | :25:51.
windy. Severe gales in the north-west. Take extra care if you | :25:52. | :25:57.
are travelling. The good news is I can promise some, whether for | :25:58. | :26:02.
Christmas Day. -- some whether that is more calm. | :26:03. | :26:04.
The weather obviously means the possibility of disruption over | :26:05. | :26:05.
Christmas. is more calm. | :26:06. | :26:08.
