good evening. Giant sandbags are being delivered by helicopter to | :00:20. | :00:27.
improve flood defences along the Gwynedd coast. High tides are | :00:28. | :00:32.
expected this weekend and homes and businesses are at risk. The village | :00:33. | :00:36.
of Llanbedr near Harlech was hit by flooding earlier this month. | :00:37. | :00:42.
Help from above and for some it cannot come soon enough. The new | :00:43. | :00:48.
year was far from a happy one for the people of Llanbedr. Their homes | :00:49. | :00:54.
were inundated with sea water when there homes were breached. Some | :00:55. | :01:00.
needed to be rescued by lifeboat. The waters have temporarily subsided | :01:01. | :01:04.
and the hiatus means help can be flown in. Giant sandbags are being | :01:05. | :01:09.
delivered to add extra protection. Speed is of the essence with very | :01:10. | :01:14.
high tides due before the end of the week. The race is on to transport | :01:15. | :01:21.
301 tonne bags of slate and stone. Using conventional means of | :01:22. | :01:25.
transport would take too long. That is good news for this couple who | :01:26. | :01:28.
heard from neighbours that their home had been hit. We are hoping | :01:29. | :01:35.
with the helicopter dropping of the bags it will spare us from another | :01:36. | :01:39.
big flood on the high tides that are coming on Friday and Saturday. | :01:40. | :01:44.
Unnatural resources Wales has been here since the last floods. Staff | :01:45. | :01:50.
say this weekend's high tides need to be closely monitored. We are | :01:51. | :01:55.
expecting high tide at the weekend. They are higher than the tides of | :01:56. | :02:00.
one month ago, but there is much less of a storm surge predicted. But | :02:01. | :02:05.
we are keeping a close eye on that. We have done a lot of modelling | :02:06. | :02:12.
work. The work we are doing will help the local community here. The | :02:13. | :02:16.
wardens who usually protects Snowdon have been moved here to supervise | :02:17. | :02:22.
the delivery of the sandbags. The National Park authority has lent its | :02:23. | :02:26.
support to speed up the assistance being offered. One of our footpath | :02:27. | :02:34.
teams are with the helicopter to get the bags onto the helicopter and | :02:35. | :02:38.
into place and we have done work with licensing to get things to | :02:39. | :02:42.
happen as quickly as they could. There will be an anxious wait this | :02:43. | :02:47.
weekend for tides to reach their peak. Residents will be hoping these | :02:48. | :02:52.
airborne defences will keep the water at bay. Plans for a state | :02:53. | :02:56.
owned commercial bank for Wales are a step closer. The Economy Minister | :02:57. | :03:02.
has gone ahead with plans to see how big would work. It would be a | :03:03. | :03:06.
one-stop shop offering financial support for companies. Finance Wales | :03:07. | :03:13.
make you feel you have no right to be asking for money. It makes you | :03:14. | :03:18.
question if you are doing the right thing. If it was not for friends, | :03:19. | :03:24.
family and certainly an order book that was filling from previous | :03:25. | :03:30.
customers, then I think I would have considered them to be right. Looe | :03:31. | :03:36.
this is about a genuine dialogue about how we take things to the next | :03:37. | :03:42.
stage. Without Finance Wales some businesses would not have been | :03:43. | :03:47.
successful. The Welsh Ambulance Service has missed its target of | :03:48. | :03:52.
reaching 65% of life-threatening incidents in eight minutes. The | :03:53. | :04:01.
figure in December was 57.6%, down from 63.2% in November. The Welsh | :04:02. | :04:04.
government said the response times were better than they had been for | :04:05. | :04:09.
the same period in 2012. Public Health Wales is calling for children | :04:10. | :04:14.
and young people who have not had the measles jab to get vaccinated | :04:15. | :04:19.
urgently. It comes as four cases of measles have been confirmed at Gower | :04:20. | :04:25.
College. There have also been a further five cases across the | :04:26. | :04:28.
Swansea, Neath Port Talbot and Carmarthenshire areas. The former | :04:29. | :04:32.
head of a Primary School in Cardiff has been struck off the teaching | :04:33. | :04:37.
register. The General Teaching Council found 15 of 24 allegations | :04:38. | :04:42.
against Jane Vaterlaws, the former head of St Alban's Roman Catholic | :04:43. | :04:46.
Primary School, were proven. She is said to have asked a struggling | :04:47. | :04:50.
people to stay at home on inspection days and shared details about the | :04:51. | :04:54.
people with the child's father who was in prison. Cancer patients | :04:55. | :05:00.
across Wales who currently travelled to England for advanced radiotherapy | :05:01. | :05:04.
treatment will now be able to get it here. A cutting edge machine has | :05:05. | :05:11.
arrived at the Velindre Cancer Centre in Cardiff. But critics say | :05:12. | :05:15.
one machine is not enough. It is one of the most advanced | :05:16. | :05:23.
health technologies in Europe. It targets cancer cells with pinpoint | :05:24. | :05:27.
accuracy and offers treatment up to four times faster than currently | :05:28. | :05:33.
available. The side-effects are also greatly reduced because smaller | :05:34. | :05:38.
areas of the body are affected. How are you? It is designed to help | :05:39. | :05:47.
people like Ruth Jones. She has been having standard radiotherapy | :05:48. | :05:50.
treatment for a month at the Velindre Cancer Centre, that would | :05:51. | :05:54.
have been eligible for this. The machine I was on was not overly | :05:55. | :06:02.
uncomfortable, I just feel that the new technology they have got will | :06:03. | :06:08.
make the job for everyone quicker and easier. The technology which | :06:09. | :06:15.
costs ?4.6 million has just arrived. It is the first of its kind | :06:16. | :06:22.
in Wales. This is the business end of the machine, so the radiotherapy | :06:23. | :06:26.
is delivered through the treatment head. That will rotate around the | :06:27. | :06:30.
gantry. One of the key things with this machine which sets it apart | :06:31. | :06:36.
from some of the others, is there is a CT scanner built into the head of | :06:37. | :06:41.
the machine. That allows us to make sure the treatment we are delivering | :06:42. | :06:45.
is going to exactly the part of the body we think it is going to. Until | :06:46. | :06:50.
now patients who were suitable for this treatment had to travel to | :06:51. | :06:55.
England. That led to campaign groups being set up by cancer patients in | :06:56. | :06:59.
Wales is calling for the latest technology to be brought here. She | :07:00. | :07:11.
told me whilst Cardiff is leading the way, Wales is lagging behind. It | :07:12. | :07:16.
is a disappointment to me we have not been more ambitious. The Welsh | :07:17. | :07:20.
government have been happy to sit back and let that situation exist in | :07:21. | :07:26.
Wales, but I am glad they have been listening to people like myself and | :07:27. | :07:30.
clinicians who wanted to get their hands on this vital equipment. The | :07:31. | :07:34.
Welsh government says the machine will be able to treat a sufficient | :07:35. | :07:39.
number of patients and all those in Wales who need it will have access | :07:40. | :07:43.
to services. That access will be available in October when the | :07:44. | :07:48.
machine is up and running. Now it is time for the weather. | :07:49. | :07:54.
It has been a very wet month this January. It is the wettest January | :07:55. | :08:04.
since records began in 1956. Some rain for some of us to night. Sleet | :08:05. | :08:12.
in places and snow on high ground. Elsewhere, it is dry and there is a | :08:13. | :08:18.
warning of icy patches in Powys and northern counties. A cold start | :08:19. | :08:24.
tomorrow and a little light rain and sleet in the South East. Otherwise | :08:25. | :08:29.
it is dry. It is brighter in the North West. Across the rest of the | :08:30. | :08:35.
UK watch out for icy patches from the Midlands northwards into | :08:36. | :08:40.
Scotland. Some rain and wintry showers across England and a heavy | :08:41. | :08:44.
rain warning for East Sussex and Kent. The best of the dry weather is | :08:45. | :08:51.
in north-east Scotland. Lighter winds than recently and feeling cold | :08:52. | :08:56.
in the North East. Tomorrow a few wintry flurries in the East and | :08:57. | :09:01.
North East, otherwise dry. Feeling cold, but the wind will be fairly | :09:02. | :09:07.
light. Tomorrow night a little light sleet and rain in the North East, | :09:08. | :09:13.
clearing away. There is a risk of icy patches again. Friday may start | :09:14. | :09:19.
dry, but it will not last. Again some heavy rain and strong to gale | :09:20. | :09:25.
force winds. It will be blustery on Saturday with sunshine and showers | :09:26. | :09:29.
and with a high spring tide there is a risk of flooding on the south and | :09:30. | :09:33.
west coasts. Some sunshine on Sunday. | :09:34. | :09:39.
Tomorrow we continue our build up to the six Nations by going behind the | :09:40. | :09:44.
scenes with Wales' strength and conditioning coaches who have helped | :09:45. | :09:49.
Wales win the last two too enamoured with their ground-breaking approach | :09:50. | :09:54.
to fitness training. Next you can see more on the investigation into | :09:55. | :10:00.
