moment. That has got to be a good thing.

:00:00.:00:07.

Welcome to Wales Today. Tonight's headlines.

:00:08.:00:11.

The manager of the Gleision Colliery goes on trial. The court is told the

:00:12.:00:16.

explosion that led to the death of four miners sounded like a jet

:00:17.:00:20.

engine. Malcolm Fyfield is accused of

:00:21.:00:22.

manslaughter through gross negligence. The jury hears he

:00:23.:00:26.

managed to escape and then told paramedics, "There's no hope for the

:00:27.:00:27.

others." Also tonight. The parents of Nida Naseer are told

:00:28.:00:45.

by police a body has been found on Newport's wetlands.

:00:46.:00:56.

The former Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons, Swansea born MP

:00:57.:00:59.

Nigel Evans, begins giving evidence at his trial.

:01:00.:01:04.

Up for sale for three years - has a buyer been found for the Murco Oil

:01:05.:01:07.

Refinery in Milford Haven? And Melanie Stephenson has type one

:01:08.:01:11.

diabetes. Services for patients with incurable conditions must improve,

:01:12.:01:12.

says a new report. The jury in the trial of a mine

:01:13.:01:22.

manager who is accused of causing the death of four colleagues through

:01:23.:01:25.

gross negligence has heard he tried to revive two of the men who died

:01:26.:01:31.

before finding a way to the surface. The court was told miners working at

:01:32.:01:35.

the Gleision site in the Swansea Valley in September 2011 heard an

:01:36.:01:38.

explosion like a jet engine, moments before the mine flooded. 58-year-old

:01:39.:01:41.

Malcolm Fyfield denies all charges, and the mine owners deny corporate

:01:42.:01:46.

manslaughter. Cemlyn Davies is at Swansea Crown Court.

:01:47.:01:50.

Lucy, two and a half years have gone by since the tragic events at

:01:51.:01:55.

Gleision Colliery. During that time the miners' families have had little

:01:56.:01:58.

information about what happened that morning. Well, today they came to

:01:59.:02:11.

court hoping for answers. September 13 2011 and rescuers work

:02:12.:02:17.

frantically at the Gleision Colliery hoping to save the lives of the men

:02:18.:02:21.

trapped inside but their efforts were in vain. They all died after

:02:22.:02:28.

water filled the area where they were working. The pit manager,

:02:29.:02:36.

Malcolm Fyfield, was mining alongside the men that morning but

:02:37.:02:41.

he managed to escape. He arrived at court today accompanied by his

:02:42.:02:45.

wife. They sat together as the jury was told Malcolm Fyfield suffers

:02:46.:02:50.

from severe post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of what

:02:51.:02:54.

happened. Members of the miners families filled the public gallery

:02:55.:02:58.

in the hope of finding out exactly why they loved ones left for work

:02:59.:03:02.

one morning but never came home. They sat and listened intently as

:03:03.:03:07.

the prosecution explained how one miner who managed to escape by

:03:08.:03:12.

crawling along a conveyor belt heard an explosion which sounded like a

:03:13.:03:16.

jet engine. He was told to run and he then heard what was described as

:03:17.:03:20.

the deafening sound of rushing water. When Malcolm Fyfield emerged

:03:21.:03:27.

from the mine, he was shaking and cold, and told rescuers "they are

:03:28.:03:35.

gone" . Afterwards, he told police he tried to resuscitate David Powell

:03:36.:03:38.

and Philip Hill while he was still in the mind but there was no

:03:39.:03:43.

response, no sign of life. The court heard the postmortem examinations

:03:44.:03:47.

showed the four men died as a result of drowning. Sat a short distance

:03:48.:03:56.

from Malcolm Fyfield worthy directors of MNS Mining, which faces

:03:57.:04:02.

four counts of corporate manslaughter by failing to ensure

:04:03.:04:05.

there was a safe system of work in place. How did this happen? How

:04:06.:04:13.

could such a tragedy have occurred? Those are the questions the miners

:04:14.:04:16.

families will want answered over the coming weeks and months.

:04:17.:04:21.

Malcolm Fyfield and MNS Mining deny all the charges against them and the

:04:22.:04:24.

trial is expected to last until the end of June.

:04:25.:04:31.

The family of missing Newport teenager Nida Naseer have been told

:04:32.:04:35.

about the discovery of a body in Newport. Gwent Police were called to

:04:36.:04:39.

the wetlands site in the city this morning. The body has yet to be

:04:40.:04:43.

identified. Our reporter Paul Heaney is there for us. What is the latest?

:04:44.:04:54.

Police were called here to Newport wetlands at 10am this morning after

:04:55.:04:59.

a report that a body had been found in this area. Part of the wetlands

:05:00.:05:03.

pathway just behind me remains closed this evening. A number of

:05:04.:05:10.

vehicles have been leaving this area throughout the afternoon. We

:05:11.:05:13.

understand the body has now been taken for a postmortem and it has

:05:14.:05:19.

yet to be identified. But it is three months almost to the day since

:05:20.:05:24.

Nida Naseer left her family home to put the bins out just a few miles

:05:25.:05:28.

away from here. Although the body has yet to be identified, her

:05:29.:05:35.

parents have been informed. Just reminders about the circumstances

:05:36.:05:37.

surrounding Nida Naseer's disappearance. 19-year-old Nida

:05:38.:05:44.

Naseer left her home three days after Christmas. It was a PM in the

:05:45.:05:50.

evening, she did not have any shoes on, she did not take her coat or any

:05:51.:05:55.

many and simply disappeared. Gwent Police have chased a number of

:05:56.:05:59.

different leagues but have failed to explain exactly what happened to

:06:00.:06:03.

her. Just two days ago, the father told BBC way is that he felt

:06:04.:06:06.

something was stopping his daughter from getting in touch. We know from

:06:07.:06:10.

this is the father told BBC way is that he felt something was stopping

:06:11.:06:13.

his daughter from getting in touch. We know from her sister Archie felt

:06:14.:06:15.

depressed about which meant she could not apply to study at

:06:16.:06:19.

university year. There is one question that still remains, the

:06:20.:06:23.

same question everyone was asking themselves in December, why did a

:06:24.:06:29.

19-year-old girl take the bins out just after Christmas and is yet to

:06:30.:06:50.

return home? The police watchdog says it has

:06:51.:06:53.

significant concerns about how some Welsh forces deal with domestic

:06:54.:06:56.

violence. Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary says Gwent and North

:06:57.:06:59.

Wales Police aren't recognising the danger some victims are in. Jordan

:07:00.:07:01.

Davies has more. Rachel Williams was shot by her

:07:02.:07:04.

husband at a salon she worked in. Christie Robinson, attacked by her

:07:05.:07:09.

boyfriend but then wrongly arrested by Gwent Police. She received

:07:10.:07:15.

compensation. And Joanna Michael from Cardiff, stabbed to death by

:07:16.:07:19.

her ex-boyfriend while waiting for officers to arrive. The desperate

:07:20.:07:23.

909 calls were misdirected. One former victim who wants to remain

:07:24.:07:27.

anonymous says Caro in situations like this could be avoided if more

:07:28.:07:32.

officers were trained to spot the danger signs. If they don't see any

:07:33.:07:40.

bruises and you seem to appear to look all right, they will just say,

:07:41.:07:47.

it is a domestic. They will walk away. This is when the victim needs

:07:48.:07:59.

help. The police have gone and then they would be beaten. There are over

:08:00.:08:07.

250,000 domestic abuse cases in Wales and England every year. A

:08:08.:08:11.

third of the games in Wales are men. Today the police watchdog criticised

:08:12.:08:19.

to Welsh forces, Gwent and North Wales Police, saying it had

:08:20.:08:24.

significant concerns about how Gwent handled some victims. It criticised

:08:25.:08:29.

officers for failing to see how serious some crimes were. In North

:08:30.:08:34.

Wales, it said the force's treatment of victims was inconsistent. This

:08:35.:08:42.

has got to be every officer's business and the disappointing thing

:08:43.:08:45.

is that not all our offices have the right training, support or expertise

:08:46.:08:49.

to deal with every victim effectively.

:08:50.:08:58.

Are you OK? This hard-hitting film, funded by

:08:59.:09:03.

Gwent Police, is one of the ways the former chief and is the tried to

:09:04.:09:07.

improve the way her force handled domestic violence. It also piloted

:09:08.:09:12.

clears law, which gives people the right to investigate their

:09:13.:09:16.

partner's violent past. And it said that a new domestic violence unit.

:09:17.:09:21.

It has now been disbanded in favour of training all front line staff.

:09:22.:09:26.

Unfortunately there are still cultural attitudes not only in the

:09:27.:09:30.

police but in other aspects of society that victims are somehow

:09:31.:09:34.

responsible for the violence they suffer and this trickles down into

:09:35.:09:38.

the police response as well. South Wales Police and Dyfed-Powys Police

:09:39.:09:44.

welcomed the praise they received in the report. Gwent says it is working

:09:45.:09:47.

hard to change things and North Wales Police say they worked

:09:48.:09:51.

tirelessly to protect victims. The hope now is that things do change

:09:52.:10:01.

before more lives are lost. The former Deputy Speaker of the

:10:02.:10:04.

House of Commons, Swansea-born MP Nigel Evans, has begun giving

:10:05.:10:07.

evidence at his trial, where he's accused of rape and indecent

:10:08.:10:10.

assault. Mr Evans denied ever behaving indecently with a series of

:10:11.:10:13.

men who claim he sexually assaulted them. Matthew Richards is outside

:10:14.:10:16.

Preston crown court. What did Mr Evans say about the allegations? He

:10:17.:10:22.

was asked almost as soon he took the witness stand whether he had ever

:10:23.:10:25.

sexually assaulted anyone, he said no. Whether he had ever raped

:10:26.:10:32.

anyone, he said no. He was asked if he ever had intercourse with the man

:10:33.:10:36.

who accused him of rape and he said yes. He said it was absolutely with

:10:37.:10:42.

consent. He was also asked about another occasion where he is alleged

:10:43.:10:45.

to have sexually assaulted a man who was staying on his sofa at his

:10:46.:10:50.

home. He said he had run his hand down the man's body but that it was

:10:51.:10:54.

brushed away and he did not pursue anything after that. He denies one

:10:55.:10:58.

charge of rape, two of indecent assault. And he spoke about his

:10:59.:11:06.

personal life as well. He spoke about growing up in Swansea, he said

:11:07.:11:11.

from the age of 12 he would help out in the shop, the grocery shop, that

:11:12.:11:16.

his parents ran and it was there he used to read the newspapers and

:11:17.:11:20.

developed a love of politics. When he was 17 he joined the Young

:11:21.:11:24.

Conservatives. You also spoke about coming out as gay in a newspaper

:11:25.:11:29.

article in 2010 but the had been an open secret in and around

:11:30.:11:34.

Westminster. And he has been found not guilty on one charge. The judge

:11:35.:11:40.

directed the jury to find Mr Evans not guilty of one charge of sexual

:11:41.:11:44.

assault, saying there was no case to answer, but that was replaced by a

:11:45.:11:49.

lesser charge of attempted sexual assault. There will be no hearing

:11:50.:11:52.

tomorrow but he will be back in the witness box on Monday.

:11:53.:11:55.

Campaigners trying to stop the building of a waste incinerator in

:11:56.:11:58.

Cardiff have lost their High Court challenge. The City Council was

:11:59.:12:02.

found to have acted lawfully in approving plans for the site near

:12:03.:12:05.

Splott, where the company Viridor has already started work on the

:12:06.:12:10.

project. The Cardiff Against the Incinerator group says it will

:12:11.:12:16.

appeal the decision. We won the battle of public opinion

:12:17.:12:21.

here a long time ago and public opinion is still very clear. We are

:12:22.:12:25.

sure that when people see the consequences of this incinerator,

:12:26.:12:30.

that the opinion will grow even stronger, and we will continue to

:12:31.:12:34.

oppose the incinerator, the impact it has. There are over 400 plants

:12:35.:12:41.

like this operating safely and efficiently across Europe. The

:12:42.:12:45.

standard by which we have two of -- operate and the conditions that come

:12:46.:12:49.

with that and the standards to which our guys and the people who will be

:12:50.:12:52.

employed in the management team are second to none.

:12:53.:13:01.

Still to come tonight. We are going to talk about

:13:02.:13:03.

homophobic bullying in schools today. And how more and more people

:13:04.:13:08.

feel victimised because of their sexuality.

:13:09.:13:11.

As part of the BBC's School Report, our budding journalists find out

:13:12.:13:14.

what can be done to tackle the problem and put politicians on the

:13:15.:13:20.

spot. A ?300 million deal to buy one of

:13:21.:13:23.

Pembrokeshire's oil refineries looks set to be completed in the next few

:13:24.:13:28.

weeks. The owners of the Murco Refinery have been looking to sell

:13:29.:13:31.

the site for more than three years. The new owners will be a private

:13:32.:13:38.

equity firm as Abigail Neal reports. They processed 135,000 barrels of

:13:39.:13:43.

oil here every day but with falling profits, the last few years have

:13:44.:13:50.

been an anxious time for workers at the Murco refinery. The American

:13:51.:13:55.

owners are reported to be close to signing 18 with a London based

:13:56.:13:58.

private equity fund. It is thought to be worth ?300 million and

:13:59.:14:05.

includes the sale of the plant along with Murco's 400 petrol stations.

:14:06.:14:09.

They have been looking to find a buyer for the refinery for more than

:14:10.:14:13.

three years now. This proposed sale to a private equity fund will secure

:14:14.:14:18.

the 450 jobs here at least in the short-term but there are concerns

:14:19.:14:22.

about what the longer-term ambitions of a new could be. It is lovely to

:14:23.:14:28.

see that it is going to get going. I am really glad for the people

:14:29.:14:34.

working there and the town. For the boys and the girls over there, if

:14:35.:14:38.

someone is going to buy it, they stay. It is the nature of a private

:14:39.:14:44.

equity fund which has made some business leaders nervous about

:14:45.:14:49.

today's news. We want guarantees that the plant will remain open and

:14:50.:14:54.

the future for the employees and all the contractors and supply chain. It

:14:55.:15:02.

is very important Pembrokeshire. There is a refinery which has opened

:15:03.:15:06.

in the southern part of India which produces more than all of ours put

:15:07.:15:10.

together in the UK and that is an export refinery. These super

:15:11.:15:14.

refineries are starting to take over. In Europe, we are going to

:15:15.:15:20.

find it increasingly challenging to justify keeping the ones we have.

:15:21.:15:27.

Although small, the Murco site has been upgraded in recent years which

:15:28.:15:31.

could count in its favour in terms of assets. The deal with the new

:15:32.:15:35.

owners is expected to be signed next month.

:15:36.:15:37.

Services for patients with chronic conditions in Wales like diabetes

:15:38.:15:40.

and heart disease must improve. That's according to a new report by

:15:41.:15:44.

the Auditor General for Wales. It says health boards have made

:15:45.:15:47.

progress since 2008, when the Auditor warned services across Wales

:15:48.:15:50.

were poorly coordinated but, six years on, several health boards

:15:51.:15:53.

still don't have a detailed plan for change. Steffan Messenger reports.

:15:54.:16:05.

Derek and Melanie, just two of the 800,000 or so adults in Wales with

:16:06.:16:09.

chronic illnesses. Long-term conditions that can mean years of

:16:10.:16:13.

treatment in care. With an ageing population, it is a growing

:16:14.:16:17.

problem, so how well is the health service dealing with it? 25-year-old

:16:18.:16:22.

Melanie has always loved athletics but at 15 she was diagnosed with

:16:23.:16:27.

type one diabetes, learning -- leaving her dependent on insulin. It

:16:28.:16:34.

is really not looked at, the psychological side of having a

:16:35.:16:39.

condition, is completely ignored. Thankfully, I have been part of some

:16:40.:16:45.

groups with the charity diabetes UK so we work with people our own age

:16:46.:16:48.

to talk about the condition. Otherwise, there would be nothing.

:16:49.:16:54.

Derek moved to Wales 14 years ago and he has a rest between illness

:16:55.:16:58.

that means he needs an oxygen to survive. In England I felt I had no

:16:59.:17:06.

support whatsoever. Credit to the Welsh National Health Service, it is

:17:07.:17:10.

only since I have been in Wales I have had good support. I have

:17:11.:17:14.

telephone numbers to two nurses, and oxygen nurse and a rest between us,

:17:15.:17:19.

so if I get a problem I can make a telephone call. Two different

:17:20.:17:24.

experiences that tally with the Wales Audit Office's findings. It

:17:25.:17:30.

reports it has seen some progress since its last report. Increased

:17:31.:17:34.

investment in community-based services, more specialist nurses and

:17:35.:17:40.

more patients able to get access to education programmes. That has led

:17:41.:17:43.

to a reduction in hospital admissions to some chronic

:17:44.:17:46.

conditions. But several health boards still lack a detailed plan

:17:47.:17:49.

for delivering community-based care. Over half the services already

:17:50.:17:54.

available are only open on weekdays and waiting times are generally too

:17:55.:17:59.

long. As our operation has grown older, the demand is increasing, so

:18:00.:18:03.

it is important that the shift in services we are seeing continues.

:18:04.:18:07.

Clearly, hospitals and health boards have well costed and clear workforce

:18:08.:18:12.

plans that indicate how those changes are going to be made. The

:18:13.:18:20.

Welsh government says it is pleased this report recognises the

:18:21.:18:23.

improvements that have been made. It will now consider the

:18:24.:18:26.

recommendations. The boss of the Football Association

:18:27.:18:29.

of Wales has welcomed a new competition, designed to replace

:18:30.:18:32.

most international friendlies. UEFA has given the go-ahead for the

:18:33.:18:35.

League of Nations competition to begin in four years' time. Final

:18:36.:18:39.

details of the format have not been decided, but Jonathan Ford has said

:18:40.:18:42.

the FAW wants discussions to continue.

:18:43.:18:48.

Now, all day, we've had school pupils visiting BBC Wales as part of

:18:49.:18:52.

our School Report project. In all, teenagers from 55 schools across

:18:53.:18:56.

Wales have been given the chance to report on issues that matter to

:18:57.:18:59.

them. Lauren and Ellis from Ysgol Plasmawr in Cardiff have been

:19:00.:19:02.

working with our journalists, putting together a special report on

:19:03.:19:05.

how young people in our schools are being bullied because they're gay or

:19:06.:19:16.

bisexual. We are going to talk about

:19:17.:19:20.

homophobic bullying in schools today and how more and more people feel

:19:21.:19:23.

victimised because of their sexuality. More than 50 pupils in

:19:24.:19:29.

our school are part of a group campaigning against homophobia. The

:19:30.:19:33.

figures show that in 99% of our schools, homophobic language is

:19:34.:19:38.

still being used. And children are being bullied on a day basis in

:19:39.:19:44.

classrooms across Wales. Whether you are in a Conran saved, a secondary

:19:45.:19:48.

school, at some point a pupil going to all those schools will experience

:19:49.:19:53.

either homophobic language or someone they know who is being

:19:54.:19:55.

bullied because they are suspected of being gay. Recent figures show

:19:56.:20:01.

that homophobic bullying is still widespread in Welsh schools. More

:20:02.:20:07.

than half of pupils have experienced are bullying. 41% have try to take

:20:08.:20:10.

their own life because they have been bullied. And 60% of gay people

:20:11.:20:16.

say teachers who see them being bullied never intervene. So what can

:20:17.:20:19.

we do in Wales to tackle homophobic bullying in our schools? And should

:20:20.:20:25.

the Welsh government be doing more? The Deputy Minister for schools said

:20:26.:20:28.

there is still a lot of work that needs to be done to turn the

:20:29.:20:31.

situation around but something that can only be changed if politicians

:20:32.:20:37.

teachers and schools work together. Schools need to have a better policy

:20:38.:20:41.

in place and at the core of that is making sure young people are able to

:20:42.:20:44.

learn without a fear of being bullied. But I think young people

:20:45.:20:48.

have a crucial role in making sure homophobic bullying is considered to

:20:49.:20:49.

be utterly unacceptable. Celebrities who are openly gay have

:20:50.:21:01.

raised awareness of this discrimination and stereotyping but

:21:02.:21:06.

it still goes on in society. Someone who has campaigned against

:21:07.:21:09.

homophobia is Gareth Thomas. He came out five years ago. I have had

:21:10.:21:15.

negative comments while walking down the street but the best thing to do

:21:16.:21:18.

is outweigh them with the positive ones. You can be picked on because

:21:19.:21:25.

of your race, gender or disability. Homophobic bullying is no different.

Two budding reporters of the future there. And if you want to see more

news stories by pupils from Wales and across the UK, just log on to

:21:39.:21:44.

www.bbc.co.uk/schoolreport. So, pretty nippy today, but there's

:21:45.:21:45.

change on the way, Derek. Chilly today. Sunny spells but not

:21:46.:21:56.

dry everywhere. A few showers turned up this afternoon. Hail in places

:21:57.:22:00.

and snow on the mountains. Mind you, on this day last year, it was

:22:01.:22:06.

bitterly cold with huge snow drifts. In Carrog today, the temperature

:22:07.:22:09.

reached seven Celsius, but on Saturday, more than double that with

:22:10.:22:14.

a high of 15 Celsius. So, a change to warmer weather over the weekend

:22:15.:22:17.

thanks to a change in wind direction. This evening, scattered

:22:18.:22:23.

heavy showers. Overnight most of the country will become dry, although

:22:24.:22:27.

the north may see some rain for a time. Showers in the south late in

:22:28.:22:32.

the night. Some patchy mist and cloud. A slight frost in places.

:22:33.:22:38.

Here's the picture for 8.00am in the morning. The north will be dry.

:22:39.:22:43.

Further south and west, a few showers. Heavy in places.

:22:44.:22:48.

Aberystwyth and Dolgellau dry and bright. Some sunshine on the Lleyn

:22:49.:22:54.

Peninsula. A real mix tomorrow. Showers in places with a risk of

:22:55.:22:59.

hail and thunder. Some dry and bright weather as well. Some

:23:00.:23:04.

sunshine in Gwynedd and Anglesey. Temperatures a little higher than

:23:05.:23:07.

today with a cool east to southeasterly breeze. Showery in

:23:08.:23:12.

Blaenau Gwent tomorrow. Some heavy showers with a chilly breeze. Only

:23:13.:23:15.

seven Celsius in Brynmawr. In Flintshire, a dry morning. But a few

:23:16.:23:19.

showers are possible in the afternoon. Tomorrow night, rain and

:23:20.:23:22.

showers will spread north but most of the country ending the night dry

:23:23.:23:28.

and not as cold as recent nights. As we head into the weekend, a change

:23:29.:23:32.

on the way. The cold pool of air will move away with warmer air over

:23:33.:23:37.

France heading our way. On Saturday, it's an improving story. Rain in

:23:38.:23:45.

parts of the west will clear. The whole country then dry and

:23:46.:23:47.

brightening-up with hazy sunshine. On Sunday, more dry and bright

:23:48.:23:51.

weather but it may cloud over during the afternoon with a few spots of

:23:52.:23:56.

rain by evening. So the cold snap this week is on its last legs.

:23:57.:24:00.

Feeling more like spring again over the weekend. I can't promise a

:24:01.:24:04.

clear, blue sky but plenty of dry weather. Hazy sunshine and higher

:24:05.:24:08.

temperatures. Good news for the daffodils and the rest of us.

:24:09.:24:12.

The top stories from the BBC. The big six energy companies are to

:24:13.:24:18.

be investigated to see if they're charging customers too much. After

:24:19.:24:22.

scathing criticism by the energy watchdog, the companies are accused

:24:23.:24:25.

of raising prices more quickly than they cut them.

:24:26.:24:33.

A court has been told how 4-20 Gleision Colliery flooded in three

:24:34.:24:39.

years ago. Malcolm Fyfield, who escaped from the mine, is accused of

:24:40.:24:44.

causing the deaths through gross negligence. He denies all charges

:24:45.:24:47.

and the mine owners deny corporate manslaughter.

:24:48.:24:50.

And that's Wales Today. We'll have a quick update at 8.00pm more at

:24:51.:24:54.

10.25pm. For now though, from all of us on the programme, have a good

:24:55.:24:56.

evening. We won't be kept down.

:24:57.:25:18.

Wales deserves better. Wales once pioneered in education,

:25:19.:25:22.

industry and healthcare.
