Good evening. There's been a dramatic rise in the number of | :00:13. | :00:17.
people in Wales diagnosed with the most serious form of skin cancer. | :00:18. | :00:20.
Figures by Cancer Research UK show the rate of people diagnosed with | :00:21. | :00:23.
malignant melanoma here has more than quadrupled over the past 40 | :00:24. | :00:29.
years. Carwyn Jones reports. We're a nation of sun lovers, and after the | :00:30. | :00:33.
winter we've had, who can blame the hundreds of people in Porthcawl | :00:34. | :00:35.
today soaking up the Easter sunshine. But prolonged exposure to | :00:36. | :00:41.
UV rays comes at a cost. That's seven, eight months before she died. | :00:42. | :00:46.
Jeffrey May lost his wife Elaine to skin cancer last year. She developed | :00:47. | :00:48.
malignant melanoma, which then spread to her gall bladder, her | :00:49. | :00:55.
spine, and finally to her brain. Melanoma is a vile, horrible | :00:56. | :01:00.
illness. It's skin cancer, cancer that gets in your blood system and | :01:01. | :01:07.
attacks the organs of your body. I think about Elaine every day of my | :01:08. | :01:12.
life, and shall do for the rest of my life, and think about could I | :01:13. | :01:16.
have done anything more? Just wish I could. Malignant melanoma is the | :01:17. | :01:22.
most serious form of skin cancer. The main cause is sun damage to the | :01:23. | :01:26.
skin. In women, the most common place to develop it is on the legs. | :01:27. | :01:31.
In men, it's on the chest and the back. | :01:32. | :01:34.
Figures released today show that 18 in every 100,000 people are | :01:35. | :01:36.
diagnosed with malignant melanoma in Wales. In the mid 1970s, that number | :01:37. | :01:40.
was just four for 100,000. That means around 730 people here are | :01:41. | :01:43.
developing malignant melanoma each year. Compare that to 40 years ago, | :01:44. | :01:46.
when the figure stood at 90 people each year. | :01:47. | :01:56.
The number of people being diagnosed with skin cancer has quadrupled over | :01:57. | :01:59.
the last 40 years, making it the fifth most common cancer in Wales, | :02:00. | :02:03.
and this will mean more people are dying of the disease. | :02:04. | :02:07.
The rise in skin cancer rates in Wales can be put down to more of us | :02:08. | :02:12.
using sun beds and our love of beach holidays, either abroad or closer to | :02:13. | :02:15.
home. As thousands of us flocked to the west coast for the Easter | :02:16. | :02:19.
getaway, many were unaware of the risks caused by increased exposure | :02:20. | :02:24.
to the sun. I don't wear sun cream because I get | :02:25. | :02:28.
a tan next morning. Not at all unless I am abroad. It depends on | :02:29. | :02:33.
how hot it is on the day. As ever, the advice is to be | :02:34. | :02:37.
sensible in the sun. Spend more time in the shade and use plenty of | :02:38. | :02:39.
sunscreen. If caught early enough malignant | :02:40. | :02:42.
melanoma can be treated successfully, but when it spreads to | :02:43. | :02:46.
other parts of the body, it can be a deadly disease. The cancer than can | :02:47. | :02:51.
prove fatal. Motorcyclists are being urged to | :02:52. | :02:54.
take care whilst driving, to reduce the number of deaths on North Wales | :02:55. | :02:57.
roads. They've accounted for almost 60% of serious casualties on one | :02:58. | :03:01.
road over the last decade - the A494. | :03:02. | :03:03.
Today, North Wales Police launched the Bikesafe campaign at the | :03:04. | :03:05.
Horseshoe Pass Complex in Llangollen, a popular meeting place | :03:06. | :03:12.
for motorcyclists. Army medics who've recently returned | :03:13. | :03:15.
from their second tour of Afghanistan have been granted the | :03:16. | :03:18.
freedom of Cardiff. Reserve soldiers from 203 Welsh Field Hospital | :03:19. | :03:24.
marched outside City Hall. Nicola Smith was there. Today they wore | :03:25. | :03:35.
their military uniform with pride. These men and women have served in | :03:36. | :03:39.
places like the Balkan, Iraq and Afghanistan, and today, the city | :03:40. | :03:43.
said thank you. Tomorrow morning though, they will return to work, as | :03:44. | :03:49.
doctors, physio, radiographers in hospitals across Wales. Jessica is | :03:50. | :03:53.
one of them. She is a staff nurse on the vascular unit at the University | :03:54. | :03:57.
Hospital of Wales in Cardiff. Four years ago, she joined the military, | :03:58. | :04:02.
and has just completed a tour duty with the unit in Camp Bastion. I was | :04:03. | :04:08.
mentoring the Afghan medics to help them look after their casualties | :04:09. | :04:12.
when believe. It was something I have never done before, it was a new | :04:13. | :04:15.
experience and really good to work with people from different | :04:16. | :04:20.
countries. They are known as the Welsh medics | :04:21. | :04:25.
and Tina is the Colonel. Nine the five she is head of the Royal | :04:26. | :04:29.
College of Nursing in Wales. It is a huge honour, to have the freedom of | :04:30. | :04:33.
the city of Cardiff, for the whole of the field hospital, and the | :04:34. | :04:36.
families are here and you can see that they are proud, because when we | :04:37. | :04:39.
go on deployment they are there in the background looking after | :04:40. | :04:42.
everything we have to come home to, we go out of life and come back in | :04:43. | :04:47.
as reservists so it is for them as much as us, it is a whole family | :04:48. | :04:50.
affair. The honour is purely ceremonial but | :04:51. | :04:55.
the unit is only the ninth organisation to be awarded the | :04:56. | :04:59.
freedom of Cardiff since the 1880s. Another chapter in the history of | :05:00. | :05:03.
the reservists and the city where Tay are based. | :05:04. | :05:07.
There's speculation tonight that Ryan Giggs could take over from | :05:08. | :05:10.
David Moyes as the manager of Manchester United. After 11 losses | :05:11. | :05:13.
this season, the club says Moyes hasn't been sacked, but declined to | :05:14. | :05:16.
comment on his longer-term future. One bookmaker has placed Ryan Giggs | :05:17. | :05:19.
as favourite to become the next permanent manager at Old Trafford. | :05:20. | :05:23.
Staying with football, and Newport County drew with Burton at Rodney | :05:24. | :05:26.
Parade 1-1. They're now 15th in League 2. Meanwhile, Wrexham were | :05:27. | :05:29.
beaten by Lincoln City 1-0 in the Conference Premier. | :05:30. | :05:37.
Cricket, and after a disappointing opening day for Glamorgan, on day | :05:38. | :05:40.
two of their County Championship match Gloucestershire leads by 12 | :05:41. | :05:43.
runs, with four wickets remaining in the 1st innings. Glamorgan's first | :05:44. | :05:50.
innings came to an end on 145. Gloucestershire are currently #19d 5 | :05:51. | :05:53.
for eight. As the bank holiday comes to an end, | :05:54. | :05:57.
it's been pretty busy on the roads today, with plenty of people out | :05:58. | :06:00.
making the most of the lovely weather too. | :06:01. | :06:01.
Benny can tell good evening, it has been a glorious | :06:02. | :06:07.
day across much of Wales with impressive temperatures. Highs of 20 | :06:08. | :06:13.
C. Considering the average is only 11, we weren't doing too bad. We do | :06:14. | :06:18.
have heavy slow-moving showers, which could mixed with hail or | :06:19. | :06:21.
thunder. Think part of the north escape the worst of those heavy | :06:22. | :06:24.
showers and it is a fairly mild night with the temperatures no lower | :06:25. | :06:28.
than eight. That will give us a mild start to Tuesday morning but we have | :06:29. | :06:32.
the showers continuing for a time. Again heavy at times and we could | :06:33. | :06:37.
see surface water flooding. Brightness between the showers if | :06:38. | :06:42.
you are lucky, with highs of round 15. Fool feeling cooler than today. | :06:43. | :06:52.
It was nice while it lasted. It will be back with an update after the | :06:53. | :06:57.
tone clock news. In the meantime, enjoy your evening. Bye for now. | :06:58. | :07:00. |
