firepower in military exercises. That is all from

:00:00.:00:00.

Welcome to Wales Today. Our top stories: A miner who almost died at

:00:00.:00:09.

Gleision describes how he crawled along a conveyor belt to escape as

:00:10.:00:12.

water quickly swept through the colliery.

:00:13.:00:15.

They decide what gets built in some of the most beautiful parts of the

:00:16.:00:19.

country but calls for powers to be stripped from the National Parks.

:00:20.:00:28.

Unhealthy hotspots. The parts of Wales with the highest health risks

:00:29.:00:30.

in Britain. Hogging parking spaces. The motor

:00:31.:00:33.

homes outstaying their welcome in this seaside town.

:00:34.:00:40.

It's very unfair I feel on the residents here who have bed and

:00:41.:00:42.

breakfast businesses. There should be a sea view and all they can see

:00:43.:00:46.

is a line of caravans. In tonight's sport: As Ryan Giggs

:00:47.:00:49.

prepares for his first game in charge of Manchester United his old

:00:50.:00:53.

team mate is hoping he can do Cardiff City a favour and beat one

:00:54.:00:56.

of their relegation rivals. I spoke to Giggsy, of course. I

:00:57.:01:02.

wished him all the best and that a boy from Cardiff should do us

:01:03.:01:05.

favours now. And I'm at Pontypridd Rugby Club

:01:06.:01:08.

where they're getting ready for one of their biggest games in years.

:01:09.:01:25.

Good evening. A miner working at the Gleision Colliery has been

:01:26.:01:30.

describing his dramatic escape when the pit flooded killing some of his

:01:31.:01:35.

colleagues. David Wyatt described how he'd been pinned down by the

:01:36.:01:38.

volume of water but managed to frantically crawl to safety. Four

:01:39.:01:43.

other miners lost their lives in the tragedy three years ago. From

:01:44.:01:46.

Swansea Crown Court, Nick Palit reports.

:01:47.:01:51.

The 15th of September 2011 and rescuers work frantically at the

:01:52.:01:54.

Gleision mine hoping to save the lives of four men trapped

:01:55.:01:59.

underground. But their efforts were in vain. David Powell, Gary Jenkins,

:02:00.:02:04.

Philip Hill and Charles Breslin all drowned, after 650,000 tonnes of

:02:05.:02:07.

water poured into the area where they were working 275 metres into

:02:08.:02:16.

the mountain. Prior to the flooding explosives had been used to break

:02:17.:02:20.

coal away from the seam. The company which own the mine and the mine

:02:21.:02:23.

manager were charged with manslaughter. Today at Swansea Crown

:02:24.:02:27.

Court, miner David Wyatt described what happened on the day the tragedy

:02:28.:02:32.

unfolded. Mr Wyatt, who'd been working at the pit since March 2010,

:02:33.:02:36.

said it was his job to load coal onto the conveyor belt or Panzer. He

:02:37.:02:40.

described how he'd been at his station about ten yards away from

:02:41.:02:43.

fellow miner Garry Jenkins working in cramped conditions with a roof

:02:44.:02:47.

height of just two foot six inches in places. He said suddenly there

:02:48.:03:01.

was a noise like a jet engine, like washing. Close to tears, he said how

:03:02.:03:14.

he jumped onto the conveyor belt. I crawled, I crawled he said. He told

:03:15.:03:17.

the court he could hear the noise behind in getting louder and louder

:03:18.:03:19.

and then it pinned me against the wall. He described how he rolled

:03:20.:03:22.

over the conveyor belt and managed to get 40 or 50 yards up the main

:03:23.:03:25.

drift until exhaustion forced in to stop. He said the water stopped four

:03:26.:03:31.

yards behind him. As he tried to crawl out of the mine he screamed at

:03:32.:03:35.

colleague Nigel Evans who was in front of him to get out quickly.

:03:36.:03:39.

This map, which was shown in court, shows the size and complexity of the

:03:40.:03:44.

Gleision Colliery. This is where the men would enter the mine. At the

:03:45.:03:51.

bottom of the main drift is what's called Heading one or H1. This is

:03:52.:03:54.

where Gary Jenkins's body was later found. This is where the three other

:03:55.:04:00.

men breached old workings, releasing enough water to fill an Olympic size

:04:01.:04:03.

swimming pool. Experts estimate the flood water was travelling at speeds

:04:04.:04:07.

of up to 21 miles per hour. Mine manager Malcolm Fyfield just escaped

:04:08.:04:11.

in time. Today the first police inspector on the scene described how

:04:12.:04:14.

Mr Fyfield exited the mine dishevelled, soaking wet and with a

:04:15.:04:18.

gash on his head. Mr Fyfield denies four charges of manslaughter through

:04:19.:04:21.

gross negligence and the mine operators, MNS mining, deny four

:04:22.:04:25.

counts of corporate manslaughter. The trial continues.

:04:26.:04:32.

A man accused of shooting his wife in the street will go on trial for

:04:33.:04:36.

her murder. Caroline Parry died after being found near her home in

:04:37.:04:39.

Newport. Christopher Parry suffered gunshot wounds to his head during

:04:40.:04:43.

the incident. He has admitted carrying a firearm or imitation

:04:44.:04:53.

firearm with criminal intent. Wales' three National Parks should

:04:54.:04:56.

be stripped of their planning powers as a first step towards abolishing

:04:57.:04:59.

them altogether. That's the call from the Farmers' Union of Wales. It

:05:00.:05:02.

claims the parks are anti-farming and anti-business. Abigail Neal has

:05:03.:05:11.

been finding out more. Such beauty has a unique value. Sometimes that

:05:12.:05:15.

means development can be a thorny issue. I with three national parks

:05:16.:05:21.

in Brecon, Pembrokeshire and Snowdonia say what can and can't be

:05:22.:05:25.

built within their boundaries. Farmers want them to lose this

:05:26.:05:30.

power. There is an inconsistency in the way they operate. It is

:05:31.:05:36.

undemocratic and it tends to be more concerned with tourism and incomers

:05:37.:05:40.

than it is with the need to population and agriculture. The

:05:41.:05:43.

Farmers' Union of Wales is calling for planning powers to be

:05:44.:05:47.

transferred to local authorities instead. The raise some support from

:05:48.:05:51.

small businesses. Tyrone Williams has a storage yard within

:05:52.:06:00.

Pembrokeshire national park. His planning permission has come with so

:06:01.:06:04.

many conditions. I can't come here after hours and there is no light

:06:05.:06:10.

available here. I have put lights up here but they do not comply. They

:06:11.:06:14.

are threatening to take me to court because I haven't complained with

:06:15.:06:22.

the conditions -- complied. Mr Williams has been helped by an

:06:23.:06:26.

architect who has taken on a number of disputes against the national

:06:27.:06:29.

parks. I have been a practitioner right across Wales for 50 years.

:06:30.:06:34.

There is a negative culture. It is as if we are in a museum. The

:06:35.:06:40.

national parks told me they were surprised by this attack because

:06:41.:06:43.

figures show they approve 85% of that -- applications. Farmers turned

:06:44.:06:53.

to benefit quite a bit from the work of national park authorities so I am

:06:54.:06:57.

slightly surprised the Farmers' Union of Wales are taking decisions

:06:58.:07:02.

that might be detrimental. These complaints from farmers and small

:07:03.:07:05.

businesses are not new but they are coming at the time of change because

:07:06.:07:09.

the last government is consulting on a new draft planning Bill. One of

:07:10.:07:13.

the proposals is to reduce the number of planning authorities in

:07:14.:07:27.

Wales. The data breach has affected three Welsh councils. In a letter

:07:28.:07:30.

sent to residents, Rhondda Cynon Taff council says details from

:07:31.:07:35.

before -- full electoral roll were released accidentally in March.

:07:36.:07:40.

Caerphilly Council on Torfaen Council have admitted they have been

:07:41.:07:44.

affected by the same glitch. All the local authorities say they have

:07:45.:07:47.

taken action to try to fix the errors.

:07:48.:07:52.

How healthy is your neighbourhood? Well, you can find out by using a

:07:53.:07:57.

new online map. It highlights the risk of developing certain diseases

:07:58.:08:00.

depending on where you live. Parts of South Wales comes out top in many

:08:01.:08:04.

categories. Researchers at Imperial College London studied the risk of

:08:05.:08:06.

developing 14 conditions, including heart disease and lung cancer. They

:08:07.:08:10.

found people in Bridgend and Rhondda Cynon Taf are more at risk of

:08:11.:08:14.

diseases like lung cancer and kidney disease. Skin cancer was more of a

:08:15.:08:18.

risk in parts of Pembrokeshire and heart disease in some areas of

:08:19.:08:23.

Flintshire. Professor Paul Elliott helped carry out the research and

:08:24.:08:29.

joins me now. Good evening. You quality health

:08:30.:08:36.

Atlas. How does it work? We hold all the national data on mortality,

:08:37.:08:41.

birds and so on and what we have done is taken that data together. We

:08:42.:08:48.

have mapped it on a local scale and has not been done before. We want to

:08:49.:08:53.

look at your graphic variability and ask questions of the data as to why

:08:54.:08:56.

some areas may be higher and others lower. What type of data were you

:08:57.:09:05.

looking at? We have cancer incidence eight and data from birth records

:09:06.:09:08.

including stillbirth and also low birth weight when a mother gives

:09:09.:09:17.

birth to a child. Parts of south Wales fared pretty badly. Why are

:09:18.:09:22.

people there more asterisk? We tried to take account of where people

:09:23.:09:31.

lived in pool areas and affluent areas. People living in poorer areas

:09:32.:09:38.

have worse health. This reflects lifestyle in particular smoking. In

:09:39.:09:43.

Wales, perhaps that's correction was not as good as it wasn't the rest of

:09:44.:09:47.

England. Perhaps some of the deprivation factors have been in.

:09:48.:09:53.

That is reflecting smoking rates and lifestyle. There is a heritage of

:09:54.:10:01.

industrial activity in Wales. We are looking over a long period of time

:10:02.:10:04.

and people carry that risk forward with them. What do you hope will

:10:05.:10:09.

happen with this research now? How useful is it? This is the first time

:10:10.:10:15.

that simply have put together this amount of data. It just raises

:10:16.:10:24.

questions. We see it as important for health policy and research is to

:10:25.:10:27.

look at the date and how to understand the patterns. Then we

:10:28.:10:31.

need to ask questions which will be studied in other types of study

:10:32.:10:36.

including individual level. This isn't about individual risk but the

:10:37.:10:40.

type of various people live in and the risk of those areas. You are

:10:41.:10:46.

hoping policymakers will act on your research? It has raised an awful lot

:10:47.:10:56.

of interest. The website has had 2 million hits an hour since it went

:10:57.:10:59.

live today so people are interested to know about and to question why

:11:00.:11:05.

there are variations on what causes the variations, to understand better

:11:06.:11:09.

our health and that will lead to prevention in future. Thank you very

:11:10.:11:15.

much for your time this evening. And if you want to find out how your

:11:16.:11:18.

neighbourhood fares in the research go to envhealthatlas.co.uk.

:11:19.:11:25.

You're watching Wales Today, a reminder of our top story. A miner

:11:26.:11:29.

who almost died at Gleision has told a court the moment the pit flooded

:11:30.:11:33.

sounded like a "jet engine". And coming up: We're at Pontypridd Rugby

:11:34.:11:39.

Club where they're getting ready for one of their biggest games in years.

:11:40.:11:50.

It has one of the best views in West Wales but residents living along a

:11:51.:11:53.

part of the prom in Aberystwyth aren't happy. They're complaining

:11:54.:11:57.

that holiday makers are parking big motor homes along the front spoiling

:11:58.:12:00.

the view and taking-up parking spaces. Ceredigion Council is now

:12:01.:12:04.

considering putting parking restrictions in place. Charlotte

:12:05.:12:14.

Dubenskij reports. It is a breathtaking view. But for

:12:15.:12:19.

some residents living here instead of the calming sea, they are seeing

:12:20.:12:24.

red. The complaint holiday-makers are bringing motorhomes and parking

:12:25.:12:27.

here for weeks at a time because there are no restrictions. It is

:12:28.:12:33.

very unfair on the residents here who have bed-and-breakfast

:12:34.:12:37.

businesses. They have their client is looking through windows where

:12:38.:12:41.

they should be ace EV land all they can see is a line of caravans. Over

:12:42.:12:47.

a 24-hour period we filmed the same campers parked up. One owner told me

:12:48.:12:53.

there is no alternative. They are not allowing anywhere else for the

:12:54.:12:58.

camper van is to park. They are big vehicles are they have to have a bit

:12:59.:13:03.

of space to park in. We can't leave our camper van wherever we are

:13:04.:13:06.

staying and then come into the towns. We have to bring it with us.

:13:07.:13:13.

It is our vehicle. But the local county council says that is not the

:13:14.:13:19.

case. There are lots of caravan sites around the area. There is one

:13:20.:13:25.

about a mile away. They could park there and they could walk the

:13:26.:13:29.

distance. It seems it is a cheap holiday with the can park for free.

:13:30.:13:33.

There are already parking restrictions here on the northside

:13:34.:13:37.

of the promenade. The recommendation is to extend those now to the south

:13:38.:13:43.

side. That movie is being welcomed by some businesses which rely on

:13:44.:13:48.

trade from tourists. If it was restricted to two or three hours we

:13:49.:13:53.

would have more holidaying makers. If they were staying in the evenings

:13:54.:14:00.

I don't see a problem but I can understand why they are staying all

:14:01.:14:05.

day. Residents have already made their views known to Ceredigion

:14:06.:14:10.

Council and a decision will be made next month. Until then, people here

:14:11.:14:15.

may have to put up with having rooms without a sea view.

:14:16.:14:18.

12 new musicians have been picked for a BBC Wales and Arts Council

:14:19.:14:21.

project to promote talented performers. Announced as part of BBC

:14:22.:14:25.

Radio Wales Music Day in Wrexham, the Horizons Scheme chose a dozen

:14:26.:14:31.

artists from 300 entries. They'll get the chance to showcase their

:14:32.:14:34.

music live on radio programmes as well as having professional

:14:35.:14:39.

recording sessions and photo shoots. There's something for everybody. If

:14:40.:14:43.

you love folk music there'll be something for you. If you love

:14:44.:14:49.

electronic music. And also there are incredible, beautiful personalities

:14:50.:14:52.

as well. Over the next 12 months by listening to Radio Cymru, Radio

:14:53.:14:55.

Wales people will get to know them quite well.

:14:56.:14:57.

Rare notebooks and manuscripts belonging to Dylan Thomas have

:14:58.:15:00.

arrived at the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth from the

:15:01.:15:05.

University of Buffalo in New York. The loan also includes a series of

:15:06.:15:08.

black and white photographs of the poet rarely seen. They'll be shown

:15:09.:15:13.

at an exhibition to mark the centenary of his birth.

:15:14.:15:18.

Another crucial weekend for both our Premier League sides. Here's Claire

:15:19.:15:22.

with tonight's sport. Good evening. Yes, and a resurgent

:15:23.:15:27.

Manchester United can do Cardiff City a favour tomorrow afternoon by

:15:28.:15:30.

beating one of their relegation rivals - Norwich. Former Wales

:15:31.:15:34.

captain, Ryan Giggs has admitted he's a little nervous about taking

:15:35.:15:37.

charge of Manchester United for the first time. Speaking at his first

:15:38.:15:41.

press conference as interim manager he said it had been a chaotic week,

:15:42.:15:46.

and he was hoping to get a good result tomorrow.

:15:47.:15:51.

I'm just concentrating on the short time, on the four game remaining and

:15:52.:15:56.

that's my main focus. My main focus is on tomorrow against Norwich which

:15:57.:16:00.

is going to be a tough game because they're fighting for their lives. I

:16:01.:16:04.

want to see goals, I want the passion. My immediate aim is to win

:16:05.:16:08.

Saturday. And that will please his former

:16:09.:16:11.

United team-mate and now Cardiff City manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

:16:12.:16:14.

He revealed he's spoken to both David Moyes and Ryan Giggs this week

:16:15.:16:18.

and hopes United can do them a favour by beating Norwich, who sit

:16:19.:16:23.

just above them in the table. Cardiff play Sunderland who are

:16:24.:16:29.

bottom on Sunday. Three games to go now and we're two

:16:30.:16:39.

points over knowledge. It is a situation everybody would take at

:16:40.:16:42.

the start of the season the Erin with a shout. It is the first time

:16:43.:16:47.

in 51 years, you can't expect this to going to mid-table. Three games

:16:48.:16:52.

to go. We have got a chance. Tomorrow, Swansea City are aiming

:16:53.:16:55.

for back-to-back Premier League wins for the first time in over a year.

:16:56.:16:59.

Aston Villa are the visitors to the Liberty Stadium where the Swans held

:17:00.:17:02.

an open training session for fans this week. Caretaker head coach,

:17:03.:17:06.

Garry Monk, says he wants to ensure the club's top-flight survival

:17:07.:17:14.

before discussing his own future. We have to mathematically make it for

:17:15.:17:18.

certain. We are not for certain. If we go into these three games and we

:17:19.:17:23.

don't get any points and the other teams get points, it is relegation

:17:24.:17:29.

for us. We need to fight for three points. When it is mathematically

:17:30.:17:32.

then that is when we consider and with the chairman of the club and

:17:33.:17:35.

see what the future is and what they're thinking is.

:17:36.:17:38.

Meanwhile, the Football Association of Wales has confirmed it has

:17:39.:17:42.

submitted a bid to UEFA to be chosen as one for Cardiff of the 13 host

:17:43.:17:45.

cities for the 2020 European Football Championships. The bid

:17:46.:17:49.

includes hosting matches at the Millennium Stadium, including three

:17:50.:17:52.

group games, plus either a last 16 or a quarter final match.

:17:53.:17:58.

The Welsh regions may be out of Europe but Pontypridd Rugby Club are

:17:59.:18:01.

flying the flag and play in one of their most important games in a

:18:02.:18:06.

decade tomorrow afternoon. A bumper crowd is expected at Sardis Road to

:18:07.:18:10.

watch them take on Leinster A in the semifinal of the British and Irish

:18:11.:18:15.

Cup. The side are being put through their final paces in training

:18:16.:18:18.

tonight and Jordan Davies is there for us.

:18:19.:18:30.

Welcome to Sardis Road. Otherwise known as the house of pain. They are

:18:31.:18:34.

going through their final paces. All we have got to do now is wait for

:18:35.:18:39.

the 5000 people to turn to fill the stadium. It will be a chance for

:18:40.:18:46.

this club to relive its glory days. If I can start with you, this tops

:18:47.:18:56.

off a good season for you. The club has never made it through to the

:18:57.:19:02.

final of this competition before. It is a tough task. They have got a

:19:03.:19:10.

very good squad. They have got a lot of experience. We have got to go at

:19:11.:19:14.

them. We are confident having beaten them last season. How is the

:19:15.:19:21.

training been so far? It is nice and light, seeing the game is tomorrow.

:19:22.:19:27.

You remember the glory days of the mid-90s. It is a chance to recapture

:19:28.:19:33.

that. It should be a tremendous occasion tomorrow. The atmosphere

:19:34.:19:39.

here is always great. We have had tremendous support. That hasn't

:19:40.:19:43.

changed since the mid-90s. There is plenty of cheered about in the last

:19:44.:19:50.

few years. We are looking forward to this tomorrow. Is it the same old

:19:51.:20:00.

faces who are still supporting you? Yes, the end of the day they are

:20:01.:20:04.

born and bred Pontypridd. That is their club. We very thankful for the

:20:05.:20:12.

support they have given us. I am sure they are looking forward as

:20:13.:20:17.

much as anyone to host the team of Leinster's calibre. And the added

:20:18.:20:25.

incentive is it will be a home tie if you win. Having a home final

:20:26.:20:35.

would be tremendous. We are under no illusions about the enormity of the

:20:36.:20:39.

task tomorrow. It'll be nice if we could make it. It chance to relive

:20:40.:20:46.

the glory days here. 5000 people, you should be a great game.

:20:47.:20:49.

Now most of us know all about the growing popularity of mountain

:20:50.:20:52.

biking in Wales. Well, there's a push this weekend to encourage more

:20:53.:20:55.

people with disabilities to take up the sport. Today at the Coed y

:20:56.:20:59.

Brenin centre near Dolgellau, instructors were getting to grips

:21:00.:21:01.

with the specially built adaptive bikes. Tomorrow there's a have a go

:21:02.:21:06.

session at Morfa Mawddach and on Sunday a full blown eight hour

:21:07.:21:13.

mountain trek. Awareness, I think, is the challenge. One of the

:21:14.:21:18.

objectives from our weekend is to just let people know that these

:21:19.:21:22.

kinds of places exist. We're not the only place, we're one of a very few

:21:23.:21:25.

at the moment but hopefully that's going to change as more people start

:21:26.:21:29.

asking the question, can I do that too? The answer is, generally, yes.

:21:30.:21:33.

You can crash these just as well as you can crash a two wheeled bike!

:21:34.:21:39.

Whatever your weekend plans are, you'll need to know the weather

:21:40.:21:40.

forecast. Derek has the details. Good evening. The waterproofs will

:21:41.:21:51.

come in handy this weekend. There is some rain on the way. Heavy showers

:21:52.:21:56.

and windier. But I can promise some dry weather and sunny spells as

:21:57.:22:00.

well. Talking of sunshine, Pembrokeshire was the place to be

:22:01.:22:05.

today. Beautiful in Tenby. Elsewhere, cloudier with rain

:22:06.:22:08.

spreading into south east, mid and north Wales during the afternoon. A

:22:09.:22:20.

few heavy showers in the south west. This evening, rain in the north east

:22:21.:22:24.

will clear. Elsewhere any showers will die away. Dry for a time but

:22:25.:22:28.

then a band of rain will spread north across the country after

:22:29.:22:31.

midnight. The wind picking-up as well. The reason for the wind and

:22:32.:22:38.

rain is an area of low pressure centred over the Celtic Sea

:22:39.:22:43.

tomorrow. Now, by eight in the morning the rain will have cleared

:22:44.:22:46.

from the north coast leaving most places dry with some sunshine.

:22:47.:22:53.

However, there will be a few showers in the south and west. Breezy on the

:22:54.:23:02.

coast. So some dry weather tomorrow but showers will become more

:23:03.:23:05.

widespread during the afternoon. Most of them in the south where they

:23:06.:23:13.

will be heavy. The best of the sunshine in the north. Top

:23:14.:23:15.

temperature 12-15 Celsius and breezy. Strong winds in the south

:23:16.:23:19.

west and on the Bristol Channel coast. The Tour of Pembrokeshire

:23:20.:23:23.

cycle ride is taking place tomorrow. It may start dry but blustery

:23:24.:23:27.

showers are forecast. A strong wind as well. Good luck. In Conwy

:23:28.:23:33.

tomorrow, sunny spells with a few showers in the afternoon. A high of

:23:34.:23:40.

15C in Betws y Coed. In the Vale of Glamorgan, the morning may be dry

:23:41.:23:43.

but expect showers in the afternoon. Windy on the coast. 13C in Barry.

:23:44.:23:48.

Tomorrow night further showers, especially in the south. A few in

:23:49.:23:53.

mid Wales. Drier in the north. The wind easing as well. Sunday hit and

:23:54.:23:59.

miss with showers. Heavy in places with a risk of thunder but some dry,

:24:00.:24:04.

brighter spells as well. Gaps in the cloud and sunny intervals.

:24:05.:24:07.

Temperatures around average with a north easterly breeze. Next week,

:24:08.:24:11.

some sunshine. Also a little rain and a few showers. The signs are it

:24:12.:24:16.

will turn colder for the start of May with lower temperatures and even

:24:17.:24:23.

some frost. Mixed weather this weekend, some showers and sunny

:24:24.:24:25.

intervals as well. The main news again from the BBC. A

:24:26.:24:31.

miner working at the Gleision Colliery has been describing his

:24:32.:24:33.

dramatic escape when the pit flooded, killing some of his

:24:34.:24:36.

colleagues. Four men lost their lives in the tragedy three years

:24:37.:24:39.

ago. The manager and mine owners deny manslaughter charges.

:24:40.:24:43.

And the Royal Bank of Scotland has abandoned attempts to pay bonuses

:24:44.:24:46.

twice the size of salaries after being told the move would not be

:24:47.:24:50.

approved. I'll have an update for you at eight

:24:51.:24:54.

and a full round-up after the BBC News at Ten. That's Wales Today,

:24:55.:24:58.

from all of us here have a great weekend. Good evening.

:24:59.:24:59.
