one of his daughter's friends. That's all from the BBC News at Six, | :00:00. | 3:59:59
so it's goodbye Welcome to Wales Today. Tonight's | :00:00. | :00:07.
headlines. The fight to win back manufacturing | :00:08. | :00:11.
from China - the former boss of electronics giant Sony says Wales | :00:12. | :00:15.
can do it. Posting abuse online - after a man | :00:16. | :00:19.
is jailed for eight weeks, a family who became victims of internet | :00:20. | :00:22.
trolls say people should report offensive comments. | :00:23. | :00:33.
They attack people who have lost somebody and tragic circumstances. | :00:34. | :00:37.
Most of the time they don't even know the person they are attacking. | :00:38. | :00:40.
One of Britain's oldest coal-burning power stations is to close with the | :00:41. | :00:42.
loss of 83 jobs. A community comes together to | :00:43. | :00:59.
treasure the past. A memorial to a mining tragedy finally finds a new | :01:00. | :01:01.
home. And in tonight's sport. | :01:02. | :01:04.
Former Cardiff City boss Malky Mackay says sorry to the club's | :01:05. | :01:08.
owner Vincent Tan after deciding to drop legal action. | :01:09. | :01:24.
Good evening. Manufacturing in Wales can be rebuilt despite years of | :01:25. | :01:31.
decline. The former boss of Japanese electronics giant Sony, Sir Howard | :01:32. | :01:34.
Stringer, has told BBC Wales companies can win back business | :01:35. | :01:39.
that's been lost to Asia. It comes as new figures show the economy is | :01:40. | :01:43.
close to being as strong as it was before the recession hit, with | :01:44. | :01:45.
manufacturing going from strength to strength. Our business correspondent | :01:46. | :01:54.
Brian Meechan has more. Manufacturing has always played a | :01:55. | :01:57.
significant part in the Welsh economy and that continues to be the | :01:58. | :02:02.
case today. Much of it has moved to Asia where wages are much lower, | :02:03. | :02:09.
making production costs cheaper. But some manufacturing work is | :02:10. | :02:14.
returning. Sony is now making this, a basic credit card sized computer | :02:15. | :02:19.
for children. There is a lesson in that for Welsh manufacturers | :02:20. | :02:23.
according to Sir Howard Stringer, the Cardiff born businessman who | :02:24. | :02:27.
became the first Westerner to run Sony's global operation. The way to | :02:28. | :02:32.
bring manufacturing back to Wales is to find a way to make it worthwhile | :02:33. | :02:37.
for Japanese companies. One of them is the distance to the customer. It | :02:38. | :02:45.
is very long from China. Your market can change within six or ten weeks. | :02:46. | :02:49.
If you do your manufacturing in Wales at a reasonable cost, you will | :02:50. | :02:53.
have a tremendous advantage on your competition. But the employment | :02:54. | :03:01.
figures are startling. In the 2001 census, just over 200,000 people | :03:02. | :03:04.
were working in manufacturing in Wales. Ten years later that number | :03:05. | :03:11.
had dropped to just under 145,000. Over the last two years, Sony has | :03:12. | :03:18.
transformed how it manufactures its cameras. Gone are the old production | :03:19. | :03:24.
lines and now one operator creates one kit. That means people like | :03:25. | :03:27.
Claire take about 90 minutes to put something like this together. Sony | :03:28. | :03:32.
has also moved production of the smaller camera to Wales. It is | :03:33. | :03:36.
innovation like this that brings that extra work in. Innovation and | :03:37. | :03:43.
quality would be the two drivers of everything we do. We are always | :03:44. | :03:47.
trying to innovate and change processes to make them more | :03:48. | :03:52.
efficient, higher quality and how do we get it to our customers faster. | :03:53. | :03:58.
Manufacturing may never return to Wales on the scale that it left but | :03:59. | :04:04.
rising costs in Asia and longs -- shipping times mean there are long | :04:05. | :04:08.
opportunities for Welsh firms. Brian joins me now. What can we take | :04:09. | :04:17.
from his comments? We have to remember that Sir Howard Stringer | :04:18. | :04:19.
ran one of the biggest manufacturing companies in the world. He knows | :04:20. | :04:24.
what he's talking about. There are a lot of positives we can take from | :04:25. | :04:29.
these comments. The trend over the last decade or so has been for | :04:30. | :04:33.
manufacturing to move towards Asia because wages are lower and that | :04:34. | :04:37.
lowers production costs. What we have seen is that you can offer | :04:38. | :04:40.
something different. And innovative approach. We can never compete on | :04:41. | :04:45.
wages but we can save money on transportation costs and offer | :04:46. | :04:48.
something different with better quality. But we saw there that there | :04:49. | :04:54.
has been a 30% reduction over a 10-year period in manufacturing jobs | :04:55. | :04:59.
for Wales. Are we going to see that come back as quickly as it left? I | :05:00. | :05:04.
think that is extremely unlikely if not impossible. But it is not all | :05:05. | :05:11.
bad news for Welsh manufacturing. And his remarks do seem to chime | :05:12. | :05:14.
with the wider economic picture on manufacturing? We are respecting | :05:15. | :05:19.
over the next humans the UK economy to bounce back to the level it was | :05:20. | :05:24.
before 2008 so when that does come back, it is being driven in no small | :05:25. | :05:29.
part by manufacturing, proportionately a bigger part of the | :05:30. | :05:33.
Welsh economy, so good manufacturing is really good for Wales. | :05:34. | :05:36.
And you can hear the full interview with Sir Howard Stringer on BBC | :05:37. | :05:39.
Radio Wales' Wales at Work programme, at 7.00am tomorrow | :05:40. | :05:42.
morning. There are calls for more of us to | :05:43. | :05:46.
report offensive material on social media to the police. It comes a day | :05:47. | :05:51.
after a man from Port Talbot was jailed for posting offensive | :05:52. | :05:53.
messages on Twitter following the stabbing of teacher Ann Maguire in | :05:54. | :05:58.
Leeds. Online safety experts say we shouldn't leave it to others to take | :05:59. | :06:03.
on the so-called internet trolls. Joy Lamb from Llanfihangel Glyn | :06:04. | :06:06.
Myfyr near Corwen is more cautious online than she used to be. It's two | :06:07. | :06:11.
and a half years since her 16-year-old granddaughter Georgia | :06:12. | :06:13.
was killed by a train at this station in Liverpool on a night out | :06:14. | :06:18.
with friends. The family's distress was deepened when Georgia's father | :06:19. | :06:20.
discovered a Facebook tribute page set up by schoolmates had been | :06:21. | :06:23.
targeted by trolls posting offensive pictures and messages about the | :06:24. | :06:34.
teenager. They said to me, don't look at it because it will just | :06:35. | :06:38.
accept you. I did look at it and it did set me but I felt that was the | :06:39. | :06:44.
reaction the trolls wanted. We totally ignored the whole thing in | :06:45. | :06:49.
the end and we did not give them the time of day because that is the | :06:50. | :06:52.
reaction, they claim to fame. But increasingly, police aren't ignoring | :06:53. | :06:55.
them. Yesterday, Robert Riley from Port Talbot was jailed for eight | :06:56. | :06:59.
weeks for remarks on Twitter about the stabbing of Ann Maguire at a | :07:00. | :07:03.
school in Leeds. Henry Platten from Hawarden in Flintshire runs an | :07:04. | :07:06.
organisation which calls itself the social media police. He says the | :07:07. | :07:10.
onus should be on the everyday user to report the worst offenders. The | :07:11. | :07:15.
key sites such as Twitter and Facebook are doing a lot of work | :07:16. | :07:19.
within schools in terms of trying to educate people about how to be | :07:20. | :07:26.
responsible. Legislation will tie up the courts and police time so | :07:27. | :07:31.
through people and parent engagement and community engagement, it is a | :07:32. | :07:34.
more effective way to resolve this long-term. Earlier this year, | :07:35. | :07:37.
Childline reported that it had seen an 87% increase in contacts from | :07:38. | :07:40.
victims of online bullying, whilst overall reports of bullying only | :07:41. | :07:50.
rose by 8%. With most of us now having access to smartphones or | :07:51. | :07:55.
tablets, it has never been easier to post things online but the 24-hour | :07:56. | :07:59.
nature of online bullying means there is no escape for victims and | :08:00. | :08:03.
that can sometimes lead to feelings of low self-esteem and in extreme | :08:04. | :08:07.
cases, self harming or suicide. Joy and her family had hoped the | :08:08. | :08:11.
internet would be a place where they could share their happiest memories | :08:12. | :08:14.
of Georgia, but the trolls have only added to their heartbreak. | :08:15. | :08:18.
A man suspected of abuse in the north Wales care system has been | :08:19. | :08:22.
found dead. Kenneth Wheatley, who was 62, was being questioned by the | :08:23. | :08:25.
National Crime Agency over historical claims. He was found dead | :08:26. | :08:29.
on a railway line three days after he was arrested and bailed by | :08:30. | :08:32.
Suffolk Police on suspicion of indecent assault against a boy near | :08:33. | :08:35.
Ipswich in 1976. It's one of the oldest coal-fired | :08:36. | :08:41.
power stations in the UK. Now, Uskmouth Power Station in Newport is | :08:42. | :08:45.
to close, putting 83 jobs at risk. Its owners, Scottish and Southern | :08:46. | :08:49.
Energy, say they're unable to find a buyer for the site. Jordan Davies | :08:50. | :08:55.
has more. It has been producing power for 50 | :08:56. | :09:04.
years. Converting coal into elegant city for thousands of homes. Now the | :09:05. | :09:09.
Uskmouth power station is due to close, putting 83 jobs at risk. Its | :09:10. | :09:15.
current owners, Scottish and Southern Power, unable to find a | :09:16. | :09:23.
suitable buyer. Some of the younger guys, it is bad. It is one of the | :09:24. | :09:29.
oldest and least efficient stations in the UK. It actually stopped | :09:30. | :09:35.
producing electricity at the end of March. A new gas-fired power station | :09:36. | :09:38.
was opened next door three years ago. Uskmouth is eight coal powered | :09:39. | :09:46.
fire station. The amount of electricity it could produce was | :09:47. | :09:52.
already limited under European lose -- rules. It would have closed in | :09:53. | :09:55.
nine years anyway whether or not a buyer could have been found. This | :09:56. | :10:00.
man represents workers at the site. He says a deal was on the table as | :10:01. | :10:06.
late as last night. People say it was a UK-based purchaser. When did | :10:07. | :10:13.
it break down? We are led to believe the discussions ceased late last | :10:14. | :10:17.
night and they were informed of that decision this morning. Scottish and | :10:18. | :10:22.
Southern Power are now looking at moving the staff to other sites. The | :10:23. | :10:28.
last people to work at a landmark building that some may say did not | :10:29. | :10:31.
quite fit the times. Still to come in the programme. | :10:32. | :10:36.
The new Swansea boss Garry Monk says he can be a successful Premier | :10:37. | :10:39.
League manager at the tender age of 35. | :10:40. | :10:42.
And it is certainly not going to be barbecue weather this weekend. More | :10:43. | :10:47.
like a taste of autumn. Stay tuned for a full forecast. | :10:48. | :10:51.
With the European elections less than a fortnight away, former Plaid | :10:52. | :10:54.
Cymru leader Lord Wigley has attacked the three main UK parties | :10:55. | :10:57.
for allowing UKIP to steer the agenda. In a speech in Merthyr | :10:58. | :11:02.
Tydfil tonight, he will warn that leaving the EU would be disastrous | :11:03. | :11:06.
for the economy. Daniel Davies reports. | :11:07. | :11:13.
Dafydd Wigley has been doing his bit for the election campaign in | :11:14. | :11:19.
Gwynedd. Tonight he'll be less complimentary about the party's | :11:20. | :11:22.
rivals when he delivers a speech in Merthyr Tydfil. He has a long | :11:23. | :11:33.
association with the town. Dafydd, now Lord Wigley, was once a manager | :11:34. | :11:36.
at Merthyr's Hoover factory and a local councillor. He also has a long | :11:37. | :11:44.
association with Europe. As an MP in the 1970s, he ignored Plaid's | :11:45. | :11:47.
official policy and campaigned in favour of staying in the European | :11:48. | :11:51.
Economic Community. That was in the referendum of 1975. Wales, like | :11:52. | :11:56.
Dafydd Wigley, voted Yes. Soon after, the rest of Plaid Cymru came | :11:57. | :12:01.
round to his way of thinking. Now there's the prospect of a referendum | :12:02. | :12:06.
on staying in the EU. And a pro-European Plaid Cymru is doing | :12:07. | :12:09.
its best to convince us that the EU is good for Wales. UKIP is a totally | :12:10. | :12:18.
negative vote. I can understand people protesting about the parties | :12:19. | :12:22.
in Westminster but if we throw away the unity we have built in Europe | :12:23. | :12:27.
over the last two generations, which has prevented wars, it enables us to | :12:28. | :12:31.
cooperate on issues such as the green agenda, the dangers of global | :12:32. | :12:38.
warming, we do that at our peril. I would besiege the voters of Wales to | :12:39. | :12:43.
look to their hearts and think very seriously indeed before wasting | :12:44. | :12:47.
their vote on UKIP. With its only seat in the European Parliament | :12:48. | :12:50.
under threat, Plaid is concentrating on getting its core vote out on May | :12:51. | :12:55.
22nd. When she won the leadership of Plaid Cymru two years ago, Leanne | :12:56. | :12:58.
Wood's supporters said she would help the party take on Labour in the | :12:59. | :13:02.
Valleys. It's places like this that will decide whether that becomes a | :13:03. | :13:08.
reality. And on Monday, Dan will be | :13:09. | :13:11.
continuing our coverage of the elections by visiting the European | :13:12. | :13:15.
Parliament in Strasbourg. MEPs travel there 12 times a year to | :13:16. | :13:19.
discuss laws that affect all the 28 member states. Dan will be finding | :13:20. | :13:24.
out what our MEPs do all day, how it all works and asking how relevant it | :13:25. | :13:28.
is to Wales. That's on Monday's Wales Today. | :13:29. | :13:32.
The owners of the former North Wales Hospital in Denbigh have objected to | :13:33. | :13:35.
the council's attempt to redevelop the site. Denbigh Council hopes to | :13:36. | :13:40.
take over the derelict property by compulsory purchase and plans to | :13:41. | :13:43.
preserve the original Grade II listed building. It would be funded | :13:44. | :13:51.
by selling other parts of the site. But the owners, Freemont Limited, | :13:52. | :13:53.
are disputing the compulsory purchase order. | :13:54. | :13:57.
A Rhondda community which fought hard to stop its church closing has | :13:58. | :14:02.
today held a special service. The memorial to a mining disaster in | :14:03. | :14:05.
1885 was originally housed at All Saints Church in Maerdy. Today, that | :14:06. | :14:10.
monument and the church bell were given a new home in the village. | :14:11. | :14:15.
Jenny Rees reports. A simple image that conjures so many | :14:16. | :14:19.
memories for this community. The memorial is to the 81 men and | :14:20. | :14:23.
children who died in a mining disaster here in 1885. It first | :14:24. | :14:28.
stood in the grounds of All Saints Church but when that closed three | :14:29. | :14:31.
years ago, the people of Maerdy wanted to find it a new home. There | :14:32. | :14:39.
is one their 13 years of age. It gives where they lived. Most of them | :14:40. | :14:47.
were from one street. The whole town was gutted, it must have been. It is | :14:48. | :14:52.
not like it is today because it was only a few streets. The village has | :14:53. | :14:57.
been built up with more houses. We have brought this in here for | :14:58. | :15:08.
people. I don't know, some of them don't realise what it is all about. | :15:09. | :15:13.
It is important to make sure they know. | :15:14. | :15:16.
Which is where Maerdy Community Primary has stepped in. It's now the | :15:17. | :15:22.
new home to the church bell and today's special assembly allowed the | :15:23. | :15:24.
children to share all they've learned about the closure of the | :15:25. | :15:28.
church, the rich history of mining in the village and, of course, the | :15:29. | :15:35.
disaster of 1885. They put all the miners who died in the church and | :15:36. | :15:38.
their families went there to see them. People fought to keep it open | :15:39. | :15:46.
because some people did not have enough many to keep it open. | :15:47. | :15:50.
Services stopped at All Saints three years ago, but the community fought | :15:51. | :15:54.
on for a year to try and save it, staging protests and even a sleep-in | :15:55. | :15:59.
in a bid to keep it open. But it wasn't to be. It is so sad to think | :16:00. | :16:07.
the children of that school can't go into that church. Many people don't | :16:08. | :16:13.
enter a church in their lives and I feel very sad about that. If I had | :16:14. | :16:18.
the money, the church would be open tomorrow. We really need the church. | :16:19. | :16:25.
The bell stands in pride of place and everybody says how beautiful it | :16:26. | :16:29.
looks. It does look really stunning so I am very pleased with that. | :16:30. | :16:34.
Today's rededication once again brought Maerdy together, remembering | :16:35. | :16:39.
the past - buildings, loved ones, an industry that can never be replaced. | :16:40. | :16:46.
So after nine dramatic months for our two Premier League teams, it all | :16:47. | :16:51.
comes to an end this Sunday. Claire, it's been quite a ride. | :16:52. | :16:58.
Back in August, few of us would have thought that Cardiff and Swansea | :16:59. | :17:01.
would have sacked their managers. Today, former Bluebirds boss Malky | :17:02. | :17:04.
Mackay has apologised without reservation to the club's owner | :17:05. | :17:07.
Vincent Tan after deciding to drop legal action against his former | :17:08. | :17:13.
employers. It comes as his successor, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said | :17:14. | :17:15.
he accepted responsibility for their relegation from the Premier League. | :17:16. | :17:21.
Both Cardiff and Swansea play their last games of the season on Sunday. | :17:22. | :17:32.
There will be one team playing in blue at the Cardiff City Stadium on | :17:33. | :17:35.
Sunday and it will not be Cardiff City. The match against Chelsea is | :17:36. | :17:39.
their last in the top, for now at least. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is | :17:40. | :17:43.
taking responsibility for what has happened. He admits he did not have | :17:44. | :17:48.
the impact he had hoped for when you have the impact he had hoped for | :17:49. | :17:51.
when you base Malky Mackay in January. But he | :17:52. | :17:53.
when you base Malky Mackay in bringing the club straight back up | :17:54. | :17:56.
next season. Whether he will have his best players is in doubt. Some | :17:57. | :18:00.
players have release clauses in their contracts which are triggered | :18:01. | :18:07.
by relegation. They will be change. I will do my very best to keep hold | :18:08. | :18:13.
of the most important players. That is vital that we keep hold of the | :18:14. | :18:18.
ones that I believe will take us back up again. That job has already | :18:19. | :18:26.
started. The sacking of Malky Mackay in December was a big moment in the | :18:27. | :18:34.
season. He was seeking compensation from the club but today he announced | :18:35. | :18:38.
he was dropping legal action after reaching a settlement. In a | :18:39. | :18:42.
statement he said it was in the best interest of all parties to have a | :18:43. | :18:45.
clean break and move on, adding that if he caused offence to anyone | :18:46. | :18:49.
during his time at the club, especially Vincent Tan, he | :18:50. | :18:53.
apologised without reservation. It was followed soon after by a similar | :18:54. | :18:59.
statement from former head of recruitment Ian Moody who apologised | :19:00. | :19:02.
for any mistakes made during his time at the club. He said he had | :19:03. | :19:07.
also reached a settlement. The club said it was a positive outcome. But | :19:08. | :19:11.
many fans are still angry towards the owner. Some will use the final | :19:12. | :19:17.
match to call again for the club's historic blue kit and badge to be | :19:18. | :19:22.
reinstated. Last night, the gates at one end of the ground were daubed | :19:23. | :19:26.
with graffiti. But it was soon painted out. The resentment of fans | :19:27. | :19:31.
may be more difficult to gloss over. This morning, the local paper | :19:32. | :19:37.
through its support behind the campaign, admitting that its | :19:38. | :19:40.
previous neutral stance on the rebranding had been wrong. It has | :19:41. | :19:43.
not been plain sailing for Swansea either with a mid-season change of | :19:44. | :19:48.
manager. This week Garry Monk was given the job on a permanent basis. | :19:49. | :19:53.
He is now the youngest manager in the top-flight and he is confident | :19:54. | :19:56.
he has got the connections and to succeed. Hopefully, I know more | :19:57. | :20:05.
people outside Swansea than people think. We have identified the | :20:06. | :20:09.
targets that we need, the areas that we need to strengthen, and we will | :20:10. | :20:15.
get the right accordingly. The Swans end their season against Sunderland. | :20:16. | :20:17.
Our football correspondent Rob Phillips is here. A day of heartfelt | :20:18. | :20:21.
apologies. What can we read between the lines? They used to say sorry is | :20:22. | :20:29.
the hardest word but I think it is the contrition with the two | :20:30. | :20:33.
statements that is most striking about this. Malky Mackay apologising | :20:34. | :20:39.
to Vincent Tan without reservation. And then saying that without Vincent | :20:40. | :20:44.
Tan's investment, their Premiership campaign would not have been | :20:45. | :20:48.
possible. It was followed by the Ian Moody statement. He went in October, | :20:49. | :20:54.
the head of recruitment, a key ally of Malky Mackay at the club, and he | :20:55. | :20:58.
says wherever mistakes were made during his time at the clip, he | :20:59. | :21:04.
wanted to apologise for any part and apologising for any offence he might | :21:05. | :21:08.
have caused to Vincent Tan. The fans will be struck by the fact that | :21:09. | :21:12.
during this season, the rift at the top of the club for all to see. It | :21:13. | :21:18.
was publicly exposed. For Malky Mackay and Ian Moody to be stating | :21:19. | :21:22.
these apologies in search contrition, I think that is | :21:23. | :21:26.
astonishing. It has been an extraordinary day. It has been a | :21:27. | :21:32.
long-running saga. Does that finally draw a line under it? Both sides are | :21:33. | :21:41.
very keen to say that is it. What it means for Malky Mackay is that, | :21:42. | :21:45.
given his track record, a very good manager with success, he has already | :21:46. | :21:50.
been linked with a number of clubs. His former club Norwich city who may | :21:51. | :21:54.
be looking for a manager this summer. West Ham United with doubts | :21:55. | :22:00.
over Sam Allardyce. Malky Mackay is now able to go and get another job. | :22:01. | :22:07.
Looking back on the season, it has been a season never to forget, | :22:08. | :22:13.
hasn't it? It has cost -- taken Cardiff City more than half a | :22:14. | :22:16.
century to get to the top flight and they are back down within a season. | :22:17. | :22:21.
Only one manager has survived the whole season from the four biggest | :22:22. | :22:26.
clubs in Wales. Congratulations Justin Edinburgh in Newport County. | :22:27. | :22:30.
Wales' Women remain second in their World Cup qualifying group after | :22:31. | :22:34.
beating Montenegro 4-0 last night. Captain Jess Fishlock grabbed a | :22:35. | :22:37.
hat-trick in the victory in Bangor, as Wales tightened their grip on | :22:38. | :22:40.
second spot, just behind leaders England. Wales' next qualifier is | :22:41. | :22:45.
next month against Turkey in Haverfordwest. The captain says they | :22:46. | :22:48.
are firmly focused on getting to the finals in Canada. | :22:49. | :22:54.
I think it is a good team display. I know that I will probably get the | :22:55. | :22:58.
headlines because I got three goals but there were some great | :22:59. | :23:01.
performances by a lot of people today. They came to make it | :23:02. | :23:06.
difficult for us, they played 11 people behind the ball, and they are | :23:07. | :23:10.
the hardest games. But we did our job and we keep on moving forward. | :23:11. | :23:14.
Rugby, and Warren Gatland is already without Sam Warburton and Leigh | :23:15. | :23:17.
Halfpenny for Wales' summer tour. Today, news that Justin Tipuric | :23:18. | :23:20.
won't make the plane to South Africa. The Ospreys flanker will | :23:21. | :23:24.
undergo surgery on his shoulder next week and could be out for four | :23:25. | :23:26.
months. Golf, and at the Players | :23:27. | :23:29.
Championship in Florida, Wales' best golfer Jamie Donaldson finished his | :23:30. | :23:36.
second round. He shot a 67 to leave him three under par for the | :23:37. | :23:38.
tournament. Germany's Martin Kaymer still leads. | :23:39. | :23:42.
Now, I'd love to say Derek's here with news of a lovely weekend ahead, | :23:43. | :23:44.
but he's not, are you, | :23:45. | :23:46. |
