I would not necessarily have thought this is particularly well advertised | :00:26. | :00:28.
to people further afield. Outdoor activity centres | :00:29. | :00:32.
like this are booming, but what more Over 200 new jobs for Merthyr | :00:33. | :00:35.
manufacturing car exhausts. His tormentors killed his cat, | :00:36. | :00:40.
he had to move home in Swansea. The thousands of hate crimes | :00:41. | :00:46.
committed every year. I was receiving hate mail, notes | :00:47. | :00:56.
pushed underneath my door, basically telling me that people were worried | :00:57. | :01:01.
about the safety of their children because I was gay. | :01:02. | :01:03.
And after a season of turmoil and relegation, Cardiff fans get | :01:04. | :01:08.
More should be done to promote the great Welsh outdoors to | :01:09. | :01:30.
That's the view of businesses operating in the sector. | :01:31. | :01:33.
A new report suggests outdoor activity tourism like white water | :01:34. | :01:36.
rafting and mountain biking already puts almost half a billion pounds | :01:37. | :01:39.
into the Welsh economy and supports thousands of jobs. | :01:40. | :01:41.
Live to the Conwy Valley and our reporter Roger Pinney. | :01:42. | :01:47.
And there's concern far too few of those jobs go to local people. | :01:48. | :01:50.
I'm at Treetops Adventure, one of the outdoor activity | :01:51. | :01:53.
businesses which are now a growing part of the Welsh Tourist Economy. | :01:54. | :01:56.
And crucially for Wales its sector which visitors can enjoy | :01:57. | :02:03.
Yes, you can get wet when you holiday in Wales but this is the | :02:04. | :02:17.
kind of wet that people are prepared to pay for, the National Whitewater | :02:18. | :02:22.
Centre. They boast about it being the best of its kind, not just in | :02:23. | :02:29.
Wales but the UK. This group are a stag party from the south and East | :02:30. | :02:33.
of England. They learnt about the activities through word of mouth. | :02:34. | :02:37.
They are not aware of much targeted advertising where they live. I think | :02:38. | :02:42.
people generally know that Wales is about outdoor pursuits. I am not | :02:43. | :02:45.
sure what they do do already. I do not see adverts in Sussex about | :02:46. | :02:54.
Wales. We were aware of it but I would not necessarily have thought | :02:55. | :02:58.
that this is particularly well advertised to say to people further | :02:59. | :03:04.
afield. The Tories arm of the Wales government does advertise but it is | :03:05. | :03:09.
of -- often broadbrush. But should there be a more focused push on the | :03:10. | :03:14.
outdoor sector? Would this -- this leading travel writer thinks so. I | :03:15. | :03:19.
think there has to be more of a push to remind people that a couple of | :03:20. | :03:23.
hours away from London, they could be in the Brecon Beacons. Three | :03:24. | :03:27.
hours on the train puts them nicely in position to explore Snowdonia. It | :03:28. | :03:33.
is a great opportunity for Wales. But of course, people in the | :03:34. | :03:38.
south-east have so much choice. Visitors mean many and money | :03:39. | :03:41.
translates into jobs. It is one thing to attract visitors to Wales. | :03:42. | :03:52.
What is important that they spend. But that is a different challenge. | :03:53. | :03:57.
Today's report suggests the outdoor sector puts more than ?480 million | :03:58. | :04:02.
into the Welsh economy every year. In excess of 8000 jobs are | :04:03. | :04:10.
supported. But not many of those jobs have gone to Welsh school | :04:11. | :04:19.
leavers. Campaigners say more needs to be done. Historically, local | :04:20. | :04:25.
people have not seen the outdoors as a means of employment. I grew up in | :04:26. | :04:33.
the area, never once was given the opportunity to go hill walking or | :04:34. | :04:36.
kayaking. I think things are changing. The work done over the | :04:37. | :04:42.
last years winner good ten years has engaged with people and that has | :04:43. | :04:46.
transferred into some people gaining sustained employment within the | :04:47. | :04:52.
sector. There is no doubt that the outdoors has lots to offer the throw | :04:53. | :04:57.
seekers, challenges galore, but edge of challenges to for policymakers. | :04:58. | :05:03.
One of those -- we asked visit to Wales to appear on the programme but | :05:04. | :05:09.
no one was able to appear on the programme. This is your place and | :05:10. | :05:13.
you run it and other attractions in North West Wales. The Welsh | :05:14. | :05:20.
Government spends around ?4 million per year on advertising. Is that | :05:21. | :05:23.
enough? Are they doing it in the wrong places? It is enough that we | :05:24. | :05:29.
could have improved brand awareness. We have some of the finest products | :05:30. | :05:34.
in the UK. We need to let the general public know that we are here | :05:35. | :05:38.
and we are open all year round. And in all weather as well. We have | :05:39. | :05:43.
heard about the importance of this sector tonight. London and the | :05:44. | :05:47.
south-east needs to be the key market because that is the highest | :05:48. | :05:51.
spending market in the UK. How do you get your business recognised | :05:52. | :05:57.
down there? It is down to the brand perception but also it is up to the | :05:58. | :06:01.
business to get to London. It is difficult. Visit Wales could be more | :06:02. | :06:09.
strategic. We could have our own managers knowing what is happening | :06:10. | :06:12.
on the coal face and getting that message to London. It is only three | :06:13. | :06:18.
hours on the train. Are they talking about the wrong things? We do tend | :06:19. | :06:23.
to go on about castles, which is important for the tourism in | :06:24. | :06:29.
north-west Wales, however we have so much more to offer, rather than | :06:30. | :06:33.
traditional seaside, we are very compact, the seaside is 15 miles | :06:34. | :06:38.
from here, Snowdon and other 15 miles south. Do you have the | :06:39. | :06:43.
barriers quitting Mark we have problems. We are in the national | :06:44. | :06:51.
park. However, planning policies are quite strict and we need to keep our | :06:52. | :06:54.
local people in jobs. We need to be able to encourage growth in this | :06:55. | :07:02.
market. A growing area and in terms of foreign visitors, the latest | :07:03. | :07:04.
survey shows that Wales has been growing that market. Although not as | :07:05. | :07:10.
More that 200 jobs are to be created in Merthyr Tydfil, | :07:11. | :07:17.
at a company that manufactures exhaust systems for cars. | :07:18. | :07:19.
Tenneco-Walker already employs around 190 people on its site | :07:20. | :07:22.
Today it announced it's opening a second site at Dowlais Top. | :07:23. | :07:25.
Here's our Business Correspondent, Brian Meechan. | :07:26. | :07:34.
The car industry is prospering on the effects are being felt in Wales. | :07:35. | :07:42.
Exhaust is made here are put on different cars and shipped around | :07:43. | :07:46.
the world. The company has been operating here for over 30 years and | :07:47. | :07:49.
will now more than double its Welsh workforce with the creation of an | :07:50. | :07:56.
extra 224 jobs, as it expands into a new site in Merthyr. Increasing | :07:57. | :08:00.
demand for cars is a sign of growing confidence in the economy. It is | :08:01. | :08:06.
growing. Customers are doing fantastically well and we are glad | :08:07. | :08:10.
to be part of that success and expansion. Tenneco-Walker operates | :08:11. | :08:13.
in 24 countries and could have chosen other sites for the Welsh | :08:14. | :08:19.
plan. The Welsh Government has also invested. But the company says it | :08:20. | :08:23.
was the skills of local people that help them decide. I think we are | :08:24. | :08:28.
pleased with the improvements happening in the economy. We are | :08:29. | :08:30.
delighted with the improvements in manufacturing but you have to be | :08:31. | :08:35.
realistic. You have good figures but you have to look beyond those | :08:36. | :08:39.
figures at who is self-employed, what is self-employment been, how | :08:40. | :08:42.
many are part-time. But these are important jobs because they are | :08:43. | :08:49.
important to the Welsh economy. Unemployment has been falling in | :08:50. | :08:52.
Merthyr and it is lower than it is in other parts of the country. But | :08:53. | :08:57.
it is higher year than the UK or Welsh average. Over the last few | :08:58. | :09:02.
months, manufacturing has been on the increase and that has been | :09:03. | :09:05.
helping to drive economic growth and what this announcement today shows | :09:06. | :09:09.
is that impact on areas like this one. The news of highly skilled | :09:10. | :09:14.
well-paid jobs is welcomed in a town that has been badly hit by the | :09:15. | :09:19.
economic crisis. It has been very gloomy because obviously, money is | :09:20. | :09:23.
tight but it is good to know for business and obviously, more money | :09:24. | :09:28.
is being spent in the town. It will create new jobs, brilliant. It is | :09:29. | :09:32.
tough. Any jobs coming to Merthyr will be good news at the moment. It | :09:33. | :09:36.
is troubled times. But certainly in that industry as well. So | :09:37. | :09:45.
manufacturing is certainly on the up and that is good news for jobs in | :09:46. | :09:48.
Brian Meechan reporting from Merthyr. | :09:49. | :09:54.
Some good jobs news for Flintshire too. | :09:55. | :09:56.
A glass processing firm is to create 80 jobs at a new production site | :09:57. | :10:00.
The Irish company Carey Glass, which already employs over 500 | :10:01. | :10:04.
people, will base its new centre at Hawarden Business Park. | :10:05. | :10:07.
The mines inspector who led the investigation after four men drowned | :10:08. | :10:10.
in a Swansea Valley pit has told a jury how he was left "chilled" | :10:11. | :10:14.
Sketches on the map suggested the colliers had been working | :10:15. | :10:19.
Tony Forster also described the sight in the Gleision mine following | :10:20. | :10:23.
Malcolm Fyfield, who was the pit manager, | :10:24. | :10:26.
denies four counts of manslaughter through gross negligence | :10:27. | :10:28.
and the mine operators deny four counts of corporate manslaughter. | :10:29. | :10:38.
A 28-year-old woman has appeared in court, charged with manslaughter | :10:39. | :10:41.
and arson, following a flat fire in Ynysybwl, near Pontypridd. | :10:42. | :10:44.
Rebecca Jenkins, who's from Swansea, has been remanded in custody until | :10:45. | :10:47.
A 46-year-old man died at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital in Llantrisant | :10:48. | :10:51.
One of the most senior opposition Assembly Members is refusing to do | :10:52. | :11:03.
one part of his job because of the way the party has handled | :11:04. | :11:06.
The Conservative AM Byron Davies has failed to turn up to the Enterprise | :11:07. | :11:11.
and Business Committee eight times, and says he won't attend in future | :11:12. | :11:14.
unless the current chairman, who is also a Conservative, is sacked. | :11:15. | :11:17.
Our Political Editor Nick Servini is here. | :11:18. | :11:25.
Why is he doing this? This all goes back to February when Andrew Davies, | :11:26. | :11:34.
the leader in the assembly, sacked four of his Assembly Members from | :11:35. | :11:40.
being frank -- on the front bash -- bench. One of those was Nick Ramsay, | :11:41. | :11:44.
the chair of the enterprise and business committee. He was replaced | :11:45. | :11:47.
by another conservative Assembly Member, William Graham. Byron Davies | :11:48. | :11:52.
objects that this on a Nimrod levels. He says he believes the | :11:53. | :11:56.
decision to sack the Assembly Members was ludicrous and secondly, | :11:57. | :12:02.
he believes that William Graham has been parachuted in because he was | :12:03. | :12:05.
not an existing member of the committee. We are left with this | :12:06. | :12:09.
extraordinary situation where we have a senior Conservative Assembly | :12:10. | :12:15.
Member effectively going on strike for part of his job by failing to | :12:16. | :12:19.
turn up for this business committee and will continue to do so until or | :12:20. | :12:24.
unless the existing chair, a fellow conservative, is sacked from the | :12:25. | :12:31.
position. How serious is this? The Conservatives are the main | :12:32. | :12:33.
opposition group but the assembly but we are not talking about | :12:34. | :12:37.
Westminster. They only have 40 members. Four have been sacked, | :12:38. | :12:41.
another is clearly unhappy. Five out of the 14 are displeased. No word | :12:42. | :12:51.
yet as to Andrew Davies. We will hear more tomorrow when he gives his | :12:52. | :12:58.
Hate crime will only be tackled when our attitudes change and we | :12:59. | :13:02.
That's the message from the Welsh Government. | :13:03. | :13:05.
Today they've set up a new system for reporting | :13:06. | :13:08.
Last year nearly 2,000 crimes were recorded here. | :13:09. | :13:11.
Andrew Davies from Swansea says hate crime changed his life. He was the | :13:12. | :13:21.
victim of homophobic abuse for more than a year. I was receiving hate | :13:22. | :13:27.
mail, notes pushed under my door, basically telling me that people | :13:28. | :13:31.
were worried about the safety of their children in the area because I | :13:32. | :13:35.
was gay and so on. It got to a point where they actually killed my cap | :13:36. | :13:41.
and sent me a sympathy card for the cat. Almost 2000 hate crimes were | :13:42. | :13:48.
recorded in Wales. Today the minister in charge told me most go | :13:49. | :13:55.
under the radar. There is a problem in Wales. It is true it is not as | :13:56. | :13:59.
bad as in some parts of England. Perhaps generally we are a more | :14:00. | :14:03.
tolerant society but nevertheless, what the consultation told us very | :14:04. | :14:09.
clearly is that it is a significant problem for a significant number of | :14:10. | :14:11.
people in Wales and therefore we need this hate crime framework. | :14:12. | :14:25.
These actors tour Wales, educating children by challenging attitudes. | :14:26. | :14:30.
But that the launch of the new reporting Centre today, the audience | :14:31. | :14:34.
was told most victims simply do not know their rights or can help. Now | :14:35. | :14:39.
by making a phone call to one central helpline, people will be | :14:40. | :14:43.
able to report crime motivated by race, religion, disability, sexual | :14:44. | :14:49.
orientation, gender identity or age. What we have not got is a true | :14:50. | :14:56.
picture of the extent and the nature of this. Through working together | :14:57. | :14:59.
and collating information in one centre, that will enable us to see | :15:00. | :15:03.
what that picture is, hopefully giving people the confidence to | :15:04. | :15:05.
report because they know alongside reporting, they can access the | :15:06. | :15:10.
support that they need. Andrew says what happened to him has had a | :15:11. | :15:14.
lasting effect but he is now using his experience to help support | :15:15. | :15:15.
others. The work starts now for Swans boss | :15:16. | :15:17.
Garry Monk, as he looks to build a stronger squad to tackle | :15:18. | :15:30.
the Premier League next season. And it felt more | :15:31. | :15:33.
like winter over the weekend, but A full forecast | :15:34. | :15:36.
for you a little later. Next Thursday, we go to the polls | :15:37. | :15:41.
in the European election. The health board has confirmed that | :15:42. | :15:52.
seven more nurses have been suspended on suspicion of falsifying | :15:53. | :15:57.
records. This comes after an enquiry was launched last year picking up | :15:58. | :16:02.
alleged anomalies regarding the record-keeping of a small number of | :16:03. | :16:07.
nurses. Our health correspondent joins us now. What is the latest? | :16:08. | :16:12.
Standards of care at the health board have been under the spotlight | :16:13. | :16:16.
for quite some time. Numerous allegations have emerged over the | :16:17. | :16:20.
past couple of years, centred around allegations of poor care, mainly, I | :16:21. | :16:26.
have to say at the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend. Well, what we | :16:27. | :16:31.
knew before today was that three nurses had been arrested and bailed | :16:32. | :16:36.
on suspicion of falsifying records. What has emerged tonight and has | :16:37. | :16:41.
been confirmed by the health board is that a further seven have been | :16:42. | :16:47.
suspended from their duties on suspicion of falsifying records. | :16:48. | :16:50.
Crucially, the health board says these were picked up as a result of | :16:51. | :16:55.
internal systems within the health board and they say is the | :16:56. | :16:59.
investigation is ongoing, it would be inappropriate to make any further | :17:00. | :17:06.
comment. Can we expect more on this soon? Yes, the Welsh Government, as | :17:07. | :17:13.
a result of many of these concerns, announced that there would be an | :17:14. | :17:16.
independent external review of nursing standards at two hospitals | :17:17. | :17:27.
in the area. Now, that review has been led by an external expert, | :17:28. | :17:32.
Professor June Andrews of the University of Stirling in Scotland. | :17:33. | :17:36.
I expect that review, the conclusions of that review, to be | :17:37. | :17:38.
announced imminently. BBC Wales received 98 complaints | :17:39. | :17:53.
after it was aired on Friday. In a statement it said the party | :17:54. | :17:56.
meets BBC Trust criteria qualifying It added that those broadcasts are | :17:57. | :17:59.
produced independently by the political parties, but that the | :18:00. | :18:03.
BBC has no say over their content. The curtain came down on a hugely | :18:04. | :18:06.
eventful season for Swansea City and Cardiff City with both clubs | :18:07. | :18:12.
facing very different futures. The Swans can look forward to | :18:13. | :18:15.
another season among the Premier League elite, while its life | :18:16. | :18:17.
in the Championship for Cardiff. But for Bluebirds' fans, the weekend | :18:18. | :18:20.
saw a potential olive branch offered The actions of some Cardiff city | :18:21. | :18:45.
fans after the final whistle against Chelsea probably gives a hint of the | :18:46. | :18:48.
issue likely to dominate the clubs close season. The protests against | :18:49. | :18:56.
the red rebrand have become more vocal but the man who brought it | :18:57. | :19:00.
about seems to have softened his stance. Vincent Tan says he will | :19:01. | :19:03.
consider reverting back to blue with the club gain promotion back to the | :19:04. | :19:11.
Premier league next season. We will take it on board as much as we can. | :19:12. | :19:17.
But the fans must have faith and confidence in us that we are running | :19:18. | :19:22.
a business and we will try to make it work financially. I have put a | :19:23. | :19:28.
lot of money on this. A Molloy raft of proposals Vincent Tan says he is | :19:29. | :19:33.
considering, is offering supporters representation on the board. We have | :19:34. | :19:39.
got to be blue. Get everyone on side. That is all he has to do. They | :19:40. | :19:47.
need to build the trust between the owners and the fans aren't talking | :19:48. | :19:51.
about foot rather than politics. Despite parting company with a | :19:52. | :19:54.
popular manager and flirting with the relegation battle, Swansea City | :19:55. | :19:59.
supporters can look forward to next season with some optimism. Garry | :20:00. | :20:06.
Monk marked his first match as manager with a victory. The most | :20:07. | :20:12.
important part for me is people we bring in have to be as good as or | :20:13. | :20:16.
better than what we have got. That is key for the club going forward. | :20:17. | :20:25.
We will have our targets. And Garry Monk also insists that the club will | :20:26. | :20:31.
keep hold of striker Wilfried Bony. After 25 goals and the World Cup | :20:32. | :20:34.
with the Ivory Coast to come, there are likely to be no shortage of | :20:35. | :20:37.
offers for the record signing this summer. | :20:38. | :20:38.
Former Scarlets Coach Nigel Davies has left Gloucester | :20:39. | :20:42.

I think England playing against Australia, it has been going on a | :21:21. | :21:30.
very long time. Huge rivalry. And having lost to Australia in the | :21:31. | :21:34.
Ashes last winter, I think that rivalry will be as keen as ever. But | :21:35. | :21:39.
not such positive for Glamorgan on the field. | :21:40. | :21:53.
You'll be pleased to hear after the weekend we've just had, | :21:54. | :21:57.

I cannot see any sign of a heatwave but there is high pressure on the | :22:04. | :22:12.
At Capel Curig in Snowdonia over 130mm, five inches of rain has | :22:13. | :22:17.
fallen so far this month, but about 90mm of this fell over the weekend. | :22:18. | :22:21.
While in Swansea the wind was strong enough to bring | :22:22. | :22:23.
The wind has been lighter today with a mixture of sunshine and showers. | :22:24. | :22:28.
Similar tomorrow but like today some places will fair better than others. | :22:29. | :22:31.
This evening scattered showers will die away. | :22:32. | :22:33.
Most of the country dry overnight with just the odd shower in places. | :22:34. | :22:37.
One or two mist patches forming and turning chilly. | :22:38. | :22:39.
Temperatures inland falling as low as 5 Celsius. | :22:40. | :22:41.
Here's the picture for eight in the morning. | :22:42. | :22:45.
Bright in places but some cloud and one or two showers as well. | :22:46. | :22:54.
The wind light but moderate in Pembrokeshire. | :22:55. | :23:02.
Later in the morning more showers will break out. | :23:03. | :23:15.
Hit and miss but if you catch one it could be heavy with thunder. | :23:16. | :23:26.
However, the north and west should become sunny during the afternoon. | :23:27. | :23:34.
Most of the showers in eastern Powys and the South East by teatime. | :23:35. | :23:40.
Tomorrow evening any showers will die away to leave a dry night. | :23:41. | :23:56.
One or two mist and fog patches forming as well. | :23:57. | :24:05.
Wednesday generally dry with sunny spells. | :24:06. | :24:09.
Although one or showers may break out in the north. | :24:10. | :24:11.
And it will turn out pleasantly warm. | :24:12. | :24:13.
By Thursday high pressure will be in charge and that means dry | :24:14. | :24:16.
So some nice weather for the second half of this week. | :24:17. | :24:20.
The dry weather should last into weekend as well. | :24:21. | :24:27.
And finally, these diversion signs in Pontypridd have raised eyebrows, | :24:28. | :24:38.
More should be done to promote the great Welsh outdoors to | :24:39. | :24:42.
That's the view of businesses operating in the sector. | :24:43. | :24:46.
A new report suggests outdoor activity tourism - like white water | :24:47. | :24:48.

We'll have an update for you here at 8pm and again after the BBC News | :24:55. | :24:58.
From all of us on the programme, good evening. | :24:59. | :25:03.
We were aware of outdoorsy type places but I would not necessarily | :25:04. | :25:07.

diversion signs have raised eyebrows after they were putting upside down. | :25:13. | :25:17.
The council has blamed contractors for the mistake which they say has | :25:18. | :25:22.
now been put right. We will have an update at 8pm. And again after the | :25:23. | :25:27.
BBC News at ten. From all of us, good night. | :25:28. | :25:32. |
