Today Gareth Williams, deputy headteacher, was sentenced to | :01:14. | :01:17.
five years in prison after pleading guilty to charges of | :01:18. | :01:19.
voyeurism and possessing thousands of indecent images of children. | :01:20. | :01:22.
Our reporter Caroline Evans is at Cardiff Crown Court. | :01:23. | :01:41.
The scheme to arrest Gareth Williams, he told them that he knew | :01:42. | :01:46.
one day he would be caught. Today he sat in the court, listening as the | :01:47. | :01:50.
details of his crimes were read out. We learned that he filmed 31 | :01:51. | :02:02.
children at Glantaf. For seven years, he collected and made | :02:03. | :02:08.
indecent images of children, some he downloaded, others he secretly | :02:09. | :02:11.
filmed himself, placing tiny cameras in toilets. Today they once | :02:12. | :02:16.
respected deputy headteacher at Glantaf was sent to jail for five | :02:17. | :02:24.
years. Sentencing him, the judge said his crimes were sophisticated | :02:25. | :02:29.
and persistent. As a result of your depraved behaviour, he said, you've | :02:30. | :02:33.
lost your career, your reputation. But this is as nothing compared to | :02:34. | :02:39.
the horror felt by many parents who interested your children to your | :02:40. | :02:45.
care -- their children. Once a TV presenter who remained a popular | :02:46. | :02:50.
figure, Gareth Williams was caught after global investigation headed by | :02:51. | :02:54.
Canadian police in 2012. Today police in Toronto said they have | :02:55. | :02:59.
broken up a large-scale international child pornography | :03:00. | :03:04.
ring. There the investigation hit the headlines but here the | :03:05. | :03:06.
authorities took another 12 months to assess the information. Professor | :03:07. | :03:15.
Rob Snowden says it is possible Williams wanted to be caught. | :03:16. | :03:20.
As soon as you begin to move into a public space and commit voyeurism, | :03:21. | :03:25.
there is a very strong chance of being caught and therefore, as a | :03:26. | :03:29.
psychologist I would begin to question as to why some he might do | :03:30. | :03:34.
that. This may point to the person actually wanting to be caught, what | :03:35. | :03:37.
they are doing they know is wrong and they want to stop it and | :03:38. | :03:41.
therefore, this escalation may have been in order to put themselves in a | :03:42. | :03:44.
position where they were stopped. His Cardiff address and credit card | :03:45. | :03:49.
details were among hundreds of customers who had accessed the | :03:50. | :03:54.
paedophile websites. When police arrested him in January, they found | :03:55. | :03:58.
a staggering 16,000 indecent photographs and 600 indecent movies | :03:59. | :04:04.
on computers and memory sticks. Legal experts said the sentence is | :04:05. | :04:08.
to be expected. There still is relatively light | :04:09. | :04:15.
sentences for offences that don't involve physical contact with | :04:16. | :04:17.
victims and I think that is really the important distension to be made | :04:18. | :04:21.
in this case could it didn't involve physical contact. It involved a | :04:22. | :04:25.
gross reach of trust and that is what pushed it up within the | :04:26. | :04:30.
brackets available for the judge. Known as a keen sportsman and rugby | :04:31. | :04:34.
coach, the scale of his offences, his admission to 31 charges, shocked | :04:35. | :04:40.
people across the city. After sentencing, the CPS issued a | :04:41. | :04:41.
statement which said: It was the nature of his offending | :04:42. | :04:54.
which has also shocked those involved in the teaching profession. | :04:55. | :04:58.
Some of the images have been catalogued with the children's | :04:59. | :05:02.
names, dates of birth and dates of recording. | :05:03. | :05:06.
I think part of the shock of this particular case is that this | :05:07. | :05:09.
gentleman was a teacher and he quite clearly abused the position of trust | :05:10. | :05:17.
and authority that he had. The reassuring thing is that he has now | :05:18. | :05:22.
been taken out of the system. The judge said the offences showed a | :05:23. | :05:27.
significant level of planning and deception. Tonight the man who had | :05:28. | :05:29.
never been in trouble with the police before begins five years | :05:30. | :05:35.
behind bars. Well, during the hearing the court | :05:36. | :05:41.
was read a statement from the headmaster of Glantaf. It said | :05:42. | :05:44.
parents and staff have struggled to reconcile the image of their deputy | :05:45. | :05:49.
head, Gareth Williams, with the bewildering betrayal they had | :05:50. | :05:54.
experienced. South Wales police have said during the investigation they | :05:55. | :05:58.
have identified, traced and spoken to 92 young people. They have | :05:59. | :06:03.
praised the school and families involved for the way they have | :06:04. | :06:06.
supported each other and say nobody could have foreseen this kind of | :06:07. | :06:29.
offending would have taken place. Captain Clark was described today as | :06:30. | :06:37.
a highly respected officer. A town at a standstill to remember one of | :06:38. | :06:42.
its fallen. Normally a lively high Street at lunchtime, today people | :06:43. | :06:46.
and as nurses stopped as Captain Thomas Clark made his final journey | :06:47. | :06:52.
through Cowbridge. Captain Clark was one of five people killed when their | :06:53. | :06:55.
helicopter came down in Afghanistan last month. His popularity at home | :06:56. | :07:00.
and within the Armed Forces was clear by the turnout today. Sadly, | :07:01. | :07:06.
he was still quite young and relatively newly married with a wife | :07:07. | :07:10.
as a serving officer as well and a man who served with me in | :07:11. | :07:15.
Afghanistan in 2012 and 2013 so he was back on another tour when this | :07:16. | :07:20.
accident occurred. Popular, entertaining, very good sportsman | :07:21. | :07:24.
and rugby player. Widely respected as a talented pilot and a good | :07:25. | :07:29.
officer. Sadly, it is a great loss that we have lost him now. | :07:30. | :07:36.
As the funeral cortege reached Cowbridge War Memorial, | :07:37. | :07:39.
standard-bearers from the Royal British Legion they would their | :07:40. | :07:49.
flags. -- lowered their flags. Family, friends and colleagues | :07:50. | :07:55.
packed into the Holy Cross Church. Dozens took their place outside to | :07:56. | :08:03.
join the ceremony. They heard tales of a 30-year-old described by | :08:04. | :08:08.
friends as a popular rugby player and a very proud Welshman. | :08:09. | :08:12.
Somebody who always lit up a room when he came in, always had a great | :08:13. | :08:19.
smile and a story of the love of the work carried out. Somebody who you | :08:20. | :08:25.
could sit and listen to four hours. After the ceremony, a Lynx | :08:26. | :08:31.
helicopter flew past the church. It was similar to the one Captain | :08:32. | :08:34.
Clark, as well as Lance Corporal Oliver Thomas from Deccan were | :08:35. | :08:41.
travelling in when they died. As the cortege left the church, applause | :08:42. | :08:49.
broke out. On an emotional day, a final, spontaneous tribute from a | :08:50. | :08:53.
town united in grief for a young man whose life was tragically cut short. | :08:54. | :08:57.
A second man has been charged with indecent assault as part | :08:58. | :09:00.
of an investigation into historical child abuse | :09:01. | :09:02.
Richard Dafydd Vevar, who's 62 and from Wrexham, has been | :09:03. | :09:06.
charged as part of operation Pallial with two offences against a boy aged | :09:07. | :09:10.
Jurors at the Gleision Mine trial have been shown images | :09:11. | :09:20.
A series of pictures were displayed in court, including images showing | :09:21. | :09:25.
pit props in the chamber where hundreds of thousands of gallons | :09:26. | :09:28.
The former pit manager Malcolm Fyfield and the owners | :09:29. | :09:33.
MNS Mining deny manslaughter charges, and the case continues. | :09:34. | :09:39.
Up to 190 engineering jobs are to be created in Wales by BT to support | :09:40. | :09:43.
Areas including Newtown, Cardigan, Bangor and Wrexham will benefit | :09:44. | :09:48.
BT says it's particularly keen to attract more female engineers. | :09:49. | :09:57.
The brother of a patient who died following failings | :09:58. | :10:02.
in the care he received at a Swansea Hospital has told BBC Wales | :10:03. | :10:05.
The treatment Peter O'Grady was given at Singleton Hospital was | :10:06. | :10:11.
described by an ombudsman as wholly unacceptable. | :10:12. | :10:13.
The ABMU health board - which is already under fire | :10:14. | :10:17.
after failings came to light at two other hospitals - has apologised. | :10:18. | :10:20.
A well- liked brother, father and grandfather who was | :10:21. | :10:36.
That's how Peter O'Grady's siblings described their late brother today. | :10:37. | :10:41.
Peter was 56 when he died two years ago after being treated at | :10:42. | :10:49.
The public service ombudsman has described the standard | :10:50. | :10:52.
of care he received there as "wholly unacceptable". | :10:53. | :10:54.
I went in there one day and he was being sick into a black bin liner. I | :10:55. | :11:01.
asked him, I said, what is this bag for? That is for me to be sick in. I | :11:02. | :11:07.
said, don't be so silly. I went down there one night and they were all in | :11:08. | :11:14.
there with their dressing gowns on them and what have you took as it | :11:15. | :11:17.
was a cold night. He said, I'm freezing. | :11:18. | :11:22.
Peter was admitted to Singleton in September 2012. | :11:23. | :11:24.
The ombudsman's report into the care he received here found | :11:25. | :11:26.
he wasn't monitored closely enough and he became dehydrated. | :11:27. | :11:29.
That contributed to his kidney failure. | :11:30. | :11:30.
The ombudsman also found the nursing staff had failed to keep | :11:31. | :11:34.
him warm and comfortable whilst he was on the ward. | :11:35. | :11:36.
Peter spent five weeks here before he was transferred to | :11:37. | :11:39.
The ABMU health board has apologised to Peter's family and says staff | :11:40. | :11:45.
have been reminded of the importance of good record-keeping. | :11:46. | :11:49.
But this is an organisation already in the spotlight after | :11:50. | :11:52.
an independent report published last week criticised the standard | :11:53. | :11:57.
of care at two other hospitals in Bridgend and in Port Talbot. | :11:58. | :12:08.
Are you confident now that the health board has taken on board the | :12:09. | :12:15.
ombudsman's findings and the lessons are being learned? I'm confident | :12:16. | :12:23.
that will be done for maybe six months. And then they will go back | :12:24. | :12:26.
to the way they were. The health board insists lessons | :12:27. | :12:28.
will be learnt after Peter O'Grady's death, including carrying out spot | :12:29. | :12:33.
checks to ensure ward staff are Much more to come before 7 o'clock - | :12:34. | :12:36.
all of tonight's sport. Welsh regional rugby has | :12:37. | :12:42.
a new sponsor - and one of our most An inquest into the death | :12:43. | :12:46.
of six Russian crewmen who died when a cargo ship sank off the | :12:47. | :12:56.
Llyn Peninsula in 2011 has heard a dramatic account | :12:57. | :12:58.
of its last minutes. The ship, The Swanland was taking | :12:59. | :13:05.
a cargo of limestone from Llanddulas near Colwyn Bay to the Isle of Wight | :13:06. | :13:08.
when it was hit From the hearing in Caernarfon, | :13:09. | :13:11.
Roger Pinney. This is the moment Roman savant knew | :13:12. | :13:29.
he was saved. He set sail on the The Swanland as a crew of eight -- as a | :13:30. | :13:37.
crew of eight. They described being washed into the sea. Today the | :13:38. | :13:41.
inquest heard more about what happened to them. Neither of the | :13:42. | :13:45.
survivors gave evidence in person. The jury heard from statements they | :13:46. | :13:50.
gave shortly after the sinking. In his, Roman savant said he was caught | :13:51. | :13:58.
by a massive wave. He sounded the horn. His captain sent out a Mayday | :13:59. | :14:04.
alert. He went on to say how the ship was hit by a second big wave | :14:05. | :14:08.
and the next thing he remembered he was in the sea. This is The Swanland | :14:09. | :14:18.
before they sinking. She was setting off from Colwyn Bay. The cargo | :14:19. | :14:23.
limestone had been concentrated towards the middle of the ship. | :14:24. | :14:27.
Marine accident experts suggested The Swanland had sailed into a | :14:28. | :14:34.
perfect storm Thomas sunk by its age, the way its cargo had been | :14:35. | :14:37.
loaded and the size of the ways it was battling. It sank in minutes, | :14:38. | :14:46.
evidence that the RAF wing man said he found debris floating in the sea | :14:47. | :14:53.
but only one body was ever recovered. The inquest is due to | :14:54. | :14:54.
resume in the morning. It's emerged that the Managing | :14:55. | :15:01.
Director of Murco in the UK, Tom McKinley, has taken a leave of | :15:02. | :15:05.
absence from the company in order to work on a deal to continue operating | :15:06. | :15:08.
the refinery at Milford Haven. The refinery faces closure with the | :15:09. | :15:11.
threat of 400 job losses unless a buyer can be found. Mr McKinley and | :15:12. | :15:15.
a number of companies are believed to be interested in buying the site. | :15:16. | :15:19.
Polls for the European elections open on Thursday and the parties are | :15:20. | :15:22.
Attention has focussed on UKIP after its leader Nigel Farage said, | :15:23. | :15:27.
he would be concerned if a group of Romanian immigrants moved | :15:28. | :15:29.
UKIP's lead European candidate in Wales, Nathan Gill has defended the | :15:30. | :15:33.
comments, saying, there's a "media witch-hunt" against the party. | :15:34. | :15:36.
Here's our Political Reporter James Williams. | :15:37. | :15:46.
Pleased to meet you. The party is in a confident mood and | :15:47. | :15:54.
the opinion polls suggest UKIP has every right to be as it makes its | :15:55. | :16:00.
final push for votes. The leader, Nigel Farage, says his party is | :16:01. | :16:05.
going to create an earthquake in these European elections and it is | :16:06. | :16:08.
in places like Merthyr the party hopes the tremors will be felt most | :16:09. | :16:12.
in Wales at its -- as it targets old Labour heartlands. It has been | :16:13. | :16:16.
scrutinised as never before as it bids to retain one of the seats in | :16:17. | :16:24.
Wales. If a group of Romanian men moved in | :16:25. | :16:29.
next door, would you be concerned? What if a group of German children | :16:30. | :16:34.
moved in, would there be a difference with Mac you know there | :16:35. | :16:38.
would be a difference. Nigel Farage has said he has | :16:39. | :16:42.
regretted any impression he was discriminating against Romanians but | :16:43. | :16:48.
he says there is a problem of Romanian criminality. It is a | :16:49. | :16:51.
position supported by UKIP's main candidate in Wales. | :16:52. | :16:57.
Despite all of the negative news stories and media stories that we've | :16:58. | :17:00.
had against UKIP, people are still turning towards us and they are | :17:01. | :17:04.
still voting for us and that is because people can see what is | :17:05. | :17:08.
happening in their own backyards. There is no doubt UKIP and its | :17:09. | :17:12.
message divides the electrodes and the recent row continues to | :17:13. | :17:15.
reverberate but with the European vote this Thursday, will this make | :17:16. | :17:22.
any difference to a party that is currently enjoying strong support? | :17:23. | :17:25.
Ryan Giggs and Regional Rugby now here's Claire with tonight's sport. | :17:26. | :17:28.
In a career spanning more than two decades Ryan Giggs has become | :17:29. | :17:31.
the most decorated player in the English game. | :17:32. | :17:33.
13 league titles, four FA Cups and two Champions Leagues, | :17:34. | :17:36.
and now at 40 years old, Ryan Giggs has announced his retirement as | :17:37. | :17:39.
a player following his appointment as assistant to new Manchester | :17:40. | :17:42.
In a career spanning more than two decades, Ryan Giggs has become one | :17:43. | :17:55.
of the most decorated players in the English game. 13 league titles, four | :17:56. | :18:00.
FA cups and two champions league. Now at 40, he has announced his | :18:01. | :18:06.
retirement as a player following his appointment as assistant manager. | :18:07. | :18:29.
Back in Cardiff his grandfather told me how he's followed Ryan | :18:30. | :18:32.
Dennis Giggs used to look after all Ryan's fan mail and has | :18:33. | :18:38.
This morning he received a phone call from Ryan on holiday in | :18:39. | :18:44.
We didn't expect him to ring from his holiday because we knew it was | :18:45. | :18:58.
in the pipeline that he might have the job but he was going away to | :18:59. | :19:02.
think about it and then he rang this morning to say it's going to be | :19:03. | :19:08.
announced and I have taken the job. Is there a trouble or a moment he | :19:09. | :19:13.
will hold and think, that was the best moment? I think it was the | :19:14. | :19:17.
treble. And if you look back, which I've seen all the highlights and all | :19:18. | :19:24.
that, Ryan had a hand in all three trophies. | :19:25. | :19:30.
Giggs made a club record 963 appearances for United | :19:31. | :19:32.
And he was appointed interim manager for four matches following | :19:33. | :19:37.
When he returns from his holidays he says he'll be focused on the | :19:38. | :19:42.
future and wants to return a great club back to where it belongs. | :19:43. | :19:45.
Wales' four rugby regions have signed a multi-million pound | :19:46. | :19:48.
sponsorship deal with the sports broadcaster BT Sport. | :19:49. | :19:54.
As part of the agreement, the Cardiff Blues' ground will now | :19:55. | :19:58.
be known as the BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park - | :19:59. | :20:01.
Here's our sports reporter Ashleigh Crowter. | :20:02. | :20:07.
Seven C won't be able to list if you watch regional rugby next season. | :20:08. | :20:14.
Not only will BT Sport be emblazoned on the regions jerseys, it will also | :20:15. | :20:21.
be the aim of the Cardiff blues historic ground. I'm delighted our | :20:22. | :20:27.
colleagues have been involved at the athletics club because it was | :20:28. | :20:29.
important to keep the Cardiff Arms Park name in the title and we've | :20:30. | :20:34.
managed to achieve it so a good day all round. It is a bold move for BT | :20:35. | :20:40.
Sport to grab a foothold in Welsh rugby when they don't hold any | :20:41. | :20:44.
broadcast rights and they are not ruling out bidding but BT also hope | :20:45. | :20:48.
the deal will be good for their broadband business as they roll out | :20:49. | :20:53.
a high-speed fibre network across the country. We are clearly seeing | :20:54. | :20:58.
sport as a massive driver of broadband and fibre broadband, | :20:59. | :21:03.
obviously. It is our intention as a company to maintain that and we are | :21:04. | :21:07.
looking at his abilities across all sports. They are commercial | :21:08. | :21:11.
decisions we have to look at carefully so I wouldn't be surprised | :21:12. | :21:15.
at anything. The four regional chief executives | :21:16. | :21:17.
can look forward to sharing a multi-million pounds some, some of | :21:18. | :21:22.
it will be earmarked for the community game. It is a boost at a | :21:23. | :21:26.
time they haven't come to agreement with the Welsh Rugby Union about | :21:27. | :21:30.
funding for next season. Perhaps today is an illustration it | :21:31. | :21:34.
would appear BT have more confidence in regional rugby than our union. | :21:35. | :21:39.
Today it was confirmed that Mark Hanna it will be the new director of | :21:40. | :21:44.
the ad the blues. He will move to the newly named Arms Park at the end | :21:45. | :21:49.
of the super 15 season as coach of the hurricanes. | :21:50. | :21:56.
The Queens Baton relay arrives in Wales this weekend ahead | :21:57. | :21:59.
of the Commonwealth games and tomorrow the Wales camp will | :22:00. | :22:01.
announce the number of medals they hope to win in Glasgow. | :22:02. | :22:04.
Last time in Dehli Wales brought back 19 | :22:05. | :22:06.
medals, with the biggest team ever representing Wales this time round, | :22:07. | :22:10.
Join us tomorrow as we find out their medal target for this summer. | :22:11. | :22:16.
The two-tonne glass optic or lens from the Bardsey Island lighthouse | :22:17. | :22:19.
has been moved - by helicopter - to its new home, a visitor centre | :22:20. | :22:22.
The 30-year-old optic is being replaced with a new light and | :22:23. | :22:27.
Seen here a few years ago the Bardsey lighthouse has been guiding | :22:28. | :22:33.
ships for generations but one of its drawbacks has been the way some | :22:34. | :22:37.
of the island?s manx shearwaters have hit the structure after being | :22:38. | :22:40.
So out with the old and in with a new red LED. | :22:41. | :22:46.
The outgoing optic weighs two tonnes so is anything but light. | :22:47. | :22:50.
The heavy lifting is being done by helicopter. | :22:51. | :22:52.
Dismantled into several pieces the lens is being transported | :22:53. | :22:55.
in five crates to Aberdaron where it will be reassembled. | :22:56. | :23:06.
It is being removed from the lighthouse, taken apart, lowered | :23:07. | :23:12.
down the side of a lighthouse, boxed up and now it is being flown over by | :23:13. | :23:18.
helicopter in five loads where it will be reassembled over three or | :23:19. | :23:23.
four days to hopefully be showcased in the middle of June. | :23:24. | :23:26.
The logistics of the operation are fairly complex | :23:27. | :23:28.
but the national trust is using this method more and more such | :23:29. | :23:31.
as carrying stones to shore up riverbanks further down the coast | :23:32. | :23:34.
After warning countless sailors to keep away, the National trust wants | :23:35. | :23:45.
the optic to do the opposite in its new role at the visitor centre-to | :23:46. | :23:51.
attract people to learn about the history and culture of the area. | :23:52. | :23:55.
It is something that people have not normally be able to see and soon it | :23:56. | :23:59.
will be right in front of you, at the heart of the centre. | :24:00. | :24:03.
And it is being moved because they are changing the technology? | :24:04. | :24:10.
They are moving to a modern LED system so this piece of technology | :24:11. | :24:14.
is redundant so we are giving it a new home. | :24:15. | :24:15.
The job has taken less than an hour and means the islands birds | :24:16. | :24:18.
will soon have a clearer path to their landing sites. | :24:19. | :24:21.
Let's see what the weather has in store. | :24:22. | :24:23.
You're going to tell us the lovely sunny weather is over. | :24:24. | :24:32.
There is a change on the way that it has been born again today. | :24:33. | :24:40.
Temperatures across Wales reaching 24 Celsius in Flintshire. Not so | :24:41. | :24:49.
good elsewhere, 12 Celsius in some places. There is a change on the way | :24:50. | :24:55.
with plenty of heavy showers on the way tonight but feeling warm across | :24:56. | :24:59.
Wales. These showers feeding in from the south and if we look at the | :25:00. | :25:03.
radar, we can see them now. The heaviest across North Wales and | :25:04. | :25:08.
these bands of showers will move to the North. Again, heavy, thundery | :25:09. | :25:15.
showers at times, especially further west but part of mid Wales and North | :25:16. | :25:20.
Wales drying up for a time overnight tonight. As far as the temperatures | :25:21. | :25:23.
are concerned, it would be called with temperatures falling to about | :25:24. | :25:29.
ten or 11 Celsius. Tomorrow morning at 8am it should look like this with | :25:30. | :25:33.
scattered showers and temperatures of 14 Celsius in Cardiff. Then | :25:34. | :25:39.
through mid and North Wales, plenty of showers. Brightness across the | :25:40. | :25:41.
North Wales coast with light to moderate winds generally. A bit | :25:42. | :25:49.
stronger along the coast. If we zoom out, plenty of showers making their | :25:50. | :25:54.
way up from the south with some heavy downpours. Fingers crossed we | :25:55. | :25:58.
will also see some brightness throughout the day with temperatures | :25:59. | :26:03.
fairly similar to today. Tomorrow night things drying up generally | :26:04. | :26:08.
across the country but it is an unsettled picture across the next | :26:09. | :26:09.
few days with heavy showers but hopefully plenty of brightness in | :26:10. | :26:11.
between those showers. I'll have an update for you here | :26:12. | :26:14.
at 8 o'clock and again That's Wales Today thank you | :26:15. | :26:17.
for watching from all of us | :26:18. | :26:23. |
