result last night was in Wales. Despite coming

a close second to Labour in the county, UKIP's leader says

it's his biggest win of the night. And on its third day around Wales

the baton pays a visit to the If that ignites their passion, it is

a brilliant thing. The UKIP leader Nigel Farage says

his party's single most remarkable achievement last night was coming

close to beating Labour in Wales. Labour topped the European

election poll by just 4,000 votes. It means both parties retain a Welsh

seat in the European parliament, as do the Conservatives and

Plaid Cymru. Intense faces at the main can't show

how tight it was. The UKIP candidate hoped he would top the poll. In the

end, he was still jubilant after sending shock waves by coming

second. Labours candidate insisted was the best ever Euro campaign. The

Tories and Plaid Cymru were both at risk of losing a seat. In the end,

relief as the four parties already representing Wales in Europe stay

the same. But look beyond that and there are big changes. Labour topped

the poll but it was short of votes required for the second seed that

the party wanted. See how close UKIP was to beating Labour. The

Conservatives have slipped back from five years ago. Meanwhile, Plaid

Cymru kept theirs after speculation they looked from rubble. As the BBC

results survey showed, Yupik picked up support in all parts of Wales.

UKIP topped the poll across Britain. For the party leader, it was still

highlight. The single most remarkable result last night was in

Wales, where UKIP was just a few thousand votes away from beating the

Labour Party in Wales. Dave and the Conservatives admit the clear

messages being sent to the parties. They claim their supporters will

return to them in general election. I really don't believe people in

Wales want the sort of policies UKIP are offering. They don't want to get

rid of the NHS, which is what UKIP are suggesting. They want to send a

message to the main political parties. It would be churlish to say

it wasn't a good night for UKIP. Only a third of the electorate

actually voted. The Lib Dems came in sixth, behind the Greens. We worked

very hard. Our members knocked on thousands of doors. We took on UKIP

as well. Those two things has enabled us to retain our feet. How

much has the political landscape in Wells changed as a result of what

happened here last night? Things will be very different in the

general election next year. One thing we do know now, and that is

that UKIP is more than capable of taking votes away from not just the

Tories, but across the political spectrum, and particularly from

Labour. How much of a blow was this for

Labour? They were hoping they would be able

to send to Welsh MEPs to Brussels. In the end, they were relieved to

topped the poll and be able to send one MEP. It is worth reflecting that

UKIP came either first or second across every council area, across

Wales last night. If there was a notion UKIP is some kind of English

phenomenon, beaming with the concerns in England, I think that

was put to bed last night with a lot of the concerns about immigration

clearly felt and shared in parts of Wales. The big question is what

impact will have in the general election. I think the response on

the main parties today was a real hope and expectation that while some

of their supporters may have flirted with UKIP, they will return to their

natural home in the general election next year.

its journey through Wales today. It spent the day at the

Urdd Eisteddfod in Bala. Welcome to Bala, we are in the

foothills of the Berwyn mountains and people have enjoyed the great

weather as they explored the Maes. But there was no mistaking the main

attraction the baton relay kicked off the cultural festival with a

celebration of sporting achievement. Is moving at a gentler pace and he's

used to, you when Thomas swats the relay for the 20 x 400 metre

versions as he joined 19 young people from across the country to

have the facts on along. It is amazing. The people have seen it and

get the chance to touch it. A lot of kids get a bad rap. They are not

bad. Sometimes they just need that fire in the belly. These teenagers

have been chosen Fulgoni extra mile in anything from playing badminton

and netball to coach Crosby and swimming, as well as volunteering in

their local communities. Amazed. I could not believe it. The same with

me. I have been camping overnight but it has all been worth it.

Thousands of people from across Wales are showing of skills in

music, art and language. This is as much a showcase for young talent as

the Commonwealth games. It is a pleasure to support team Wales. It

gives opportunities for the athletes. The Commonwealth Matt

Scott made sure his arrival was noticed. It may be too went into the

games begin, but the build-up is well underway. The Commonwealth

button relay will hand over to Carmarthenshire tomorrow. Visitor
