The man in charge of policing the NATO summit in Newport says | :00:22. | :00:25.
the security, in places, will be more rigorous than the | :00:26. | :00:27.
London Olympic Games and will "break new ground" for a British event. | :00:28. | :00:31.
Assistant Chief Constable Chris Armitt says thousands of police | :00:32. | :00:35.
It comes as protestors in Newport tell BBC Wales there are already | :00:36. | :00:38.
plans for a large demonstration in the city before the summit. | :00:39. | :00:48.
Scenes from the last NATO summit. Thousands of demonstrators clashing | :00:49. | :01:05.
with police in protest that cost the city millions. The number of | :01:06. | :01:13.
countries coming and their heads of state and attendant diplomats will | :01:14. | :01:18.
push the number of protected did people up. That includes the London | :01:19. | :01:26.
Olympic Games in 2012 which was protected by soldiers, warships and | :01:27. | :01:32.
even missiles. One group have taken over this restaurant in the centre | :01:33. | :01:36.
of Newport and they are hosting discussions on antinuclear | :01:37. | :01:41.
campaigning, workers rights and even lessons in basic first aid. Many I | :01:42. | :01:46.
have spoken to have come from all over the UK to be here and say that | :01:47. | :01:50.
they will be back for the NATO summit in September. On the 30th of | :01:51. | :01:56.
August there will be a trade union led demonstration through Newport | :01:57. | :02:00.
which presumably will be pretty massive with people attending from | :02:01. | :02:08.
all over the country. These scenes give an idea of what might be about | :02:09. | :02:14.
to descend on Newport and Wales. Those charged with security and | :02:15. | :02:18.
safety say that they are ready. We will know in 100 days. Just under | :02:19. | :02:27.
50% of ambulances reached their eighth minute target, still short of | :02:28. | :02:31.
the Welsh Government target of 65%. eighth minute target, still short of | :02:32. | :02:39.
Police are investigating claims that a child at a Carmarthenshire nursery | :02:40. | :02:41.
was assaulted by a member of staff. Dyfed-Powys Police said they were | :02:42. | :02:44.
called over an allegation at the Welsh-medium Clych Meithrin | :02:45. | :02:47.
that serves the villages of Cefneithin and Gorslas. | :02:48. | :02:49.
Officers are working with the Local Safeguarding Children Board | :02:50. | :02:52.
and the Care and Social Services In spirit to it for Wales. -- | :02:53. | :03:01.
Inspectorate. More than a third of people in Wales | :03:02. | :03:09.
admit to being racially prejudiced, one of the biggest increases in the | :03:10. | :03:12.
UK since the turn of the century. That's according to new research | :03:13. | :03:16.
from the British Social Attitudes Survey. | :03:17. | :03:18.
It found that 34% of us have some level of prejudice, | :03:19. | :03:21.
a rise of 14% since 2000. The Welsh Government has described | :03:22. | :03:24.
the findings as concerning. More people in Wales say they are | :03:25. | :03:29.
prejudiced when it comes to race. This man from the Swansea area has | :03:30. | :03:33.
been arrested four times for racially aggravated assault. He | :03:34. | :03:37.
spoke to me anonymously about how he used to abuse asylum seekers in his | :03:38. | :03:44.
neighbourhood. I would shout at them and tell them this is the UK. You do | :03:45. | :03:52.
not talk that language here. It was probably because of jobs. My father | :03:53. | :03:58.
used to say they took the jobs. You have the BNP saying stuff, the | :03:59. | :04:02.
National front. You do not know who to believe. He has now met people | :04:03. | :04:08.
from different backgrounds and feels very differently. It is not the | :04:09. | :04:13.
right thing to do. They are not here to bomb or threaten us, they just | :04:14. | :04:20.
want to live peacefully. This ethnic youth support team has spoken to 200 | :04:21. | :04:23.
young people in the past two years about similar issues. They have | :04:24. | :04:29.
introduced them to people with different backgrounds and have | :04:30. | :04:33.
changed misconceptions. The majority of young people we speak to are not | :04:34. | :04:39.
racist but have strong reactions to what they see in the news. It is | :04:40. | :04:46.
just misconceptions and once they have been educated on these topics | :04:47. | :04:49.
they know the truth and their views change. I think right across the UK | :04:50. | :04:56.
economic austerity is a powerful factor in people developing the | :04:57. | :05:02.
Judas. Scapegoats for the problems they find themselves in. So it is | :05:03. | :05:06.
not surprising at a time of economic difficulty that you will find these | :05:07. | :05:11.
views. But the same survey suggests that around 70% do not hold these | :05:12. | :05:20.
views so let us not create too dark picture. So more of us are prepared | :05:21. | :05:22.
to admit we have a degree of prejudice. What the figures today do | :05:23. | :05:28.
not fully explain is why more of us are discriminating on the grounds of | :05:29. | :05:36.
race. A leading charity has warned that targets to a radically child | :05:37. | :05:45.
poverty by 2020 will not be met. -- to eradicate. It says there needs to | :05:46. | :05:49.
be a focus on families where parents work but are on low wages. 33% of | :05:50. | :05:54.
children here live in poverty, higher than the UK average of 27%. | :05:55. | :06:00.
We are talking about the triple whammy effect which is slow wage | :06:01. | :06:07.
growth, cuts in social security expenditure and cost in living | :06:08. | :06:13.
expenses rising. These combine to make that target very challenging. | :06:14. | :06:19.
The Heritage lottery fund is to give almost ?3 million to safeguard the | :06:20. | :06:26.
family home of one poet and turn it into a museum. Two Welsh actors have | :06:27. | :06:41.
been nominated for prestigious American television awards. Matthew | :06:42. | :06:46.
Rees has been short listed for a critic 's choice award for his part | :06:47. | :06:49.
in the Americans and Michael Sheen for his role. Sport and Cardiff City | :06:50. | :06:56.
have confirmed they have signed striker Adam Lafond from Redding for | :06:57. | :07:01.
an undisclosed fee. He will join the Italian striker in the bluebirds | :07:02. | :07:06.
squad after he joined on a free transfer. The 22-year-old has a | :07:07. | :07:16.
three year deal. Cricket and the weather ruined Glamorgan?s push for | :07:17. | :07:21.
victory in their match against Leicestershire in spite of regular | :07:22. | :07:24.
stoppages, Glamorgan got themselves within a couple of wickets of | :07:25. | :07:32.
success. But when the rain intervened again this evening the | :07:33. | :07:37.
match was called off as a draw. The Queen?s Bateau relay has been | :07:38. | :07:43.
touring Pembrokeshire. It began with a visit to Saint Davids Cathedral | :07:44. | :07:47.
where it got a special blessing and then continued north. It ended the | :07:48. | :07:53.
day in the Kansas. Tomorrow it will head up Snowdon on the start of its | :07:54. | :07:59.
journey through North Wales. Let us hope that the weather will be good | :08:00. | :08:07.
for that. It is going to be dull and foggy on | :08:08. | :08:11.
the top of Snowdon tomorrow and quite chilly. But better prospects | :08:12. | :08:17.
for Anglesey and it should be dry by the time the Bateau arrives late in | :08:18. | :08:23.
the afternoon. For tonight it is cloudy with rain and drizzle around. | :08:24. | :08:31.
Drier in the South West. Some mist and hill fog as well. And mild | :08:32. | :08:36.
across the rest of the UK. A murky start tomorrow with some fog patches | :08:37. | :08:43.
on the Brecon Beacons. It should be dry in Pembrokeshire and Swansea. | :08:44. | :08:48.
For the rest of the country we have some mist and fog patches which will | :08:49. | :08:56.
slowly lift. Some drizzle into Scotland and northern Ireland. For | :08:57. | :09:01.
the Midlands and southern England the sun will break through but this | :09:02. | :09:06.
will trigger some showers. Still quite cool on the East Coast. A high | :09:07. | :09:14.
of 18 degrees in Cardiff. So in Wales tomorrow afternoon, there will | :09:15. | :09:18.
be showers around and if you catch one that would be quite heavy with | :09:19. | :09:24.
thunder and lightning. On Friday there will be some more showers here | :09:25. | :09:28.
and there but they will be hit and miss. It will feel quite warm | :09:29. | :09:36.
weather sun breaks through and that sets the scene for the weekend. | :09:37. | :09:39.
Saturday mostly dry with some sunshine. The odd shower on Sunday | :09:40. | :09:46.
but all in all not a bad weekend. And that is all for now. Wales | :09:47. | :09:53.
report is next. Kirsty Williams talks about her continued support | :09:54. | :09:57.
for Nick Clegg. That is coming next. Good night. | :09:58. | :10:01. |
