War veterans from across Wales are joined by the First Minister | :00:09. | :00:19.
in France to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings. | :00:20. | :00:32.
We were ordinarily lives when we came here in 1944. It is very | :00:33. | :00:43.
difficult to imagine what it must have been like. I am here on one of | :00:44. | :00:59.
the beaches where British troops landed on this day in 1944. | :01:00. | :01:16.
Six men face serious sexual assault charges over alleged historical | :01:17. | :01:20.
abuse in North Wales children's homes. | :01:21. | :01:22.
A warning in force - temperatures are rising, bringing | :01:23. | :01:24.
And in tonight's sport - he's won silver and bronze for Wales | :01:25. | :01:28.
Christian Malcolm shares his disappointment at not being | :01:29. | :01:32.
It is tough for me. Do I carry on until the end of the season? I tried | :01:33. | :01:44.
my best and it was not good enough. Veterans from Wales have been | :01:45. | :01:53.
in Normandy to mark the 70th They were among | :01:54. | :01:57.
around 2,000 surviving veterans who joined world leaders to honour | :01:58. | :02:01.
the bravery of those involved. After meeting some of the veterans, | :02:02. | :02:04.
the First Minister Carwyn Jones said that we owe them a debt | :02:05. | :02:07.
of gratitude. For many of the men, today's | :02:08. | :02:09.
commemoration was seen as their last opportunity to remember their fallen | :02:10. | :02:12.
colleagues on such a large scale. We can join our reporter | :02:13. | :02:16.
Abigail Neal who is in the town of The commemorations are continuing | :02:17. | :02:32.
tonight. There are small services going on up and down this coastline. | :02:33. | :02:38.
This is one of two beaches that British forces landed on in 1944. | :02:39. | :02:54.
And world leaders were over a clear duty to play homage. -- were over | :02:55. | :03:08.
there today to pay homage. Here to remember the price we paid. | :03:09. | :03:36.
First Minister Carmen Jones was at a ceremony -- Carwyn Jones was at | :03:37. | :03:45.
ceremony of remembrance. They were such brave men 70 years ago. It is | :03:46. | :03:52.
difficult to imagine what it must have been like for them. For them to | :03:53. | :03:57.
come back here, I am sure was emotional. | :03:58. | :04:05.
The veterans are heroes here. Everyone wants to stop and talk. It | :04:06. | :04:09.
is great to see the recognition that they get from everyone. We all these | :04:10. | :04:31.
people a tremendous debt. This man was given the special celebrity | :04:32. | :04:41.
treatment. I can't get over it. It is fantastic. We were just ordinary | :04:42. | :04:53.
people when we came over in 1944. We had to do it. We survived. | :04:54. | :05:21.
The speech took international centre stage this afternoon. -- this beach. | :05:22. | :05:32.
There are 18 heads of state here. This will be the last major | :05:33. | :05:37.
anniversary where they will be able to see that the world was here. It | :05:38. | :05:52.
is important to remember that Welsh people surfed on D-Day in many | :05:53. | :06:00.
different ways. -- many people did surface on D-Day -- many people | :06:01. | :06:38.
served in many ways. I joined by one of the veterans now. | :06:39. | :06:45.
What does it mean to have been part of this? I owed this to them. | :06:46. | :07:15.
It makes you feel proud. It brings it all back. I can't | :07:16. | :07:29.
describe it. You were on a vessel that was | :07:30. | :07:33.
torpedoed. Is that the most poignant part? Yes. I always wanted to throw | :07:34. | :07:53.
a wreath in the Channel. This will be the last large-scale and | :07:54. | :07:58.
adversity. How do you feel about that? Has it been a fitting tribute? | :07:59. | :08:08.
Definitely. It will still be remembered in some way or other. The | :08:09. | :08:16.
appreciation of the French people, you will never forget it. Submitted | :08:17. | :08:34.
by everyone. -- saluted by everyone. Yes. | :08:35. | :09:01.
One veteran from Monmouthshire has had a school named after him not far | :09:02. | :09:04.
from here, after decades of work to tell school children about the war. | :09:05. | :09:08.
89 year old David Edwards saw action just after D-Day. | :09:09. | :09:11.
They had no idea of danger. The Germans had zeroed in. They were | :09:12. | :09:33.
involved in pushing the Germans out of Normandy. In the rubble of a | :09:34. | :09:39.
building they found this photograph. He kept it until 1986 | :09:40. | :09:48.
when he returned to the ADR. -- when he returns to the area. | :09:49. | :09:55.
It was this man's house in the picture. I am very happy that he | :09:56. | :10:09.
triggers for thought. -- I am very happy that he took this photograph. | :10:10. | :10:26.
David has helped with school exchanges for decades. | :10:27. | :10:37.
In 2002 the local school was named after two of the veterans who had | :10:38. | :10:55.
helped to liberate the town. He can still talk about it. It is very | :10:56. | :11:03.
important. If he had never picked up that photographed -- photograph, | :11:04. | :11:15.
these children could have missed out on finding out what D-Day was all | :11:16. | :11:26.
about. We have found some of the veterans | :11:27. | :11:35.
who have joined us. We have been reflecting on some of the stories. | :11:36. | :11:42.
Many of these veterans have been back many times since. After this | :11:43. | :11:50.
year this will be the last remembrance on this scale. | :11:51. | :11:57.
To the day's other news now and the Operation Pallial team investigating | :11:58. | :12:00.
historical child sex abuse in North Wales has charged a further six men. | :12:01. | :12:04.
They are due to appear before magistrates in Mold next week. | :12:05. | :12:07.
They're accused of a total of 27 serious sexual assaults | :12:08. | :12:10.
against two boys under 16 in Wrexham in the 1980s. | :12:11. | :12:12.
Roger Pinney joins us now from North Wales Police headquarters | :12:13. | :12:15.
Roger how significant a development is this? | :12:16. | :12:31.
This operation has been looking back since 2012. A total of 27 charges | :12:32. | :12:53.
will be brought. We have the names of five of those who have been | :12:54. | :13:04.
charged. The sixth person has not been named. | :13:05. | :13:13.
The investigation is in its second year. Will this be the end of it? | :13:14. | :13:27.
This is just the start of it. The guilt or innocence will be decided | :13:28. | :13:34.
by the court. The Operation Pallial team has taken statements from more | :13:35. | :13:42.
than 200 people. This still has some way to run yet. | :13:43. | :13:49.
Still to come before 7.30: He's won silver | :13:50. | :13:52.
and bronze at previous Commonwealth games - Christian Malcolm speaks to | :13:53. | :13:56.
us about missing out on representing Wales for the fifth time. | :13:57. | :13:59.
And the humidity is rising - and heavy rain | :14:00. | :14:01.
Plaid Cymru has asked for the National Dance Company Wales | :14:02. | :14:13.
to be investigated by the Auditor General, over concerns about the way | :14:14. | :14:17.
Earlier this year a leaked confidential report said the company | :14:18. | :14:21.
was facing a crisis among its managers and board of directors. | :14:22. | :14:27.
Well our arts and media correspondent Huw Thomas | :14:28. | :14:30.
Huw - what has prompted the request to the auditor? | :14:31. | :14:33.
You mentioned the crisis there - and that was the damning conclusion | :14:34. | :14:37.
of the confidential report that was commissioned by the Arts Council | :14:38. | :14:40.
last year, and followed a huge falling out | :14:41. | :14:42.
The Arts Council provides around 85% of the Dance Company's | :14:43. | :14:46.
annual income - around ?850,000 this year - and the dancers themselves | :14:47. | :14:52.
have carried on performing and touring while the crisis has | :14:53. | :14:55.
It led to the resignations of the artistic director who founded | :14:56. | :15:03.
the company 30 years ago, and five of the eight board members quit - | :15:04. | :15:06.
with one of those going on to call for the chairman to resign as well. | :15:07. | :15:10.
I've also learned that in recent months the Dance Company | :15:11. | :15:16.
has been given an extra ?40,000 by the Arts Council - | :15:17. | :15:19.
money the company says is to help recruit a new artistic director, | :15:20. | :15:26.
and to pay for consultants who'll help take the business forward. | :15:27. | :15:29.
But Plaid's culture spokesperson Bethan Jenkins says the situation | :15:30. | :15:31.
There are questions that need to be answered with regard to how the | :15:32. | :15:44.
dance company has moved forward since the review. Many of the former | :15:45. | :15:51.
board members dispute the contents of that report. That is why I wrote | :15:52. | :15:58.
to the auditor general to ask that he looks into this matter so that | :15:59. | :16:04.
they can get to the root of the problem. | :16:05. | :16:11.
It's planning to recruit a brand new management and board | :16:12. | :16:16.
in the autumn - and the extra money will help with that. | :16:17. | :16:19.
In the meantime the performances by their dancers aren't affected. | :16:20. | :16:22.
The Auditor General has agreed to meet Bethan Jenkins | :16:23. | :16:24.
The Welsh Government - which gives the Arts Council | :16:25. | :16:28.
its budget - told me it was keeping an eye on the developments. | :16:29. | :16:31.
The aircraft manufacturer, Airbus, has admitted it failed to ensure the | :16:32. | :16:34.
health and safety of its employees at its factory in Broughton. | :16:35. | :16:37.
The charge followed the death in 2011 of Donald Williams | :16:38. | :16:40.
An earlier inquest heard he'd been crushed by a tractor at the end | :16:41. | :16:45.
The company will be sentenced next month. | :16:46. | :16:48.
Eight members of a drugs gang have been sentenced to a total of 38 | :16:49. | :16:52.
years behind bars after thousands of cannabis plants worth an | :16:53. | :16:55.
The two and a half year operation included officers from the | :16:56. | :16:59.
Arrests and raids took places in Cardiff, Newport, | :17:00. | :17:02.
Swansea and Pontypridd as well as the west of England. | :17:03. | :17:06.
The head teacher, and another member of staff at a Swansea secondary | :17:07. | :17:10.
school have resigned, after what appeared to be a sex tape | :17:11. | :17:13.
Graham Daniels was suspended from Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Bryn Tawe, | :17:14. | :17:19.
along with another member of staff, after a complaint about the video. | :17:20. | :17:23.
The school says the resignations are not necessarily linked to | :17:24. | :17:25.
Responsibility for Cyfarthfa Park and Castle - as well as libraries | :17:26. | :17:37.
and leisure centres in Merthyr Tydfil - could be handed over to a | :17:38. | :17:40.
The local authority has set out plans which could save them | :17:41. | :17:45.
The council is now seeking proposals. | :17:46. | :17:48.
Claire here now with tonight's sports news. | :17:49. | :17:50.
There are 47 days to go until the start of the Commonwealth Games. | :17:51. | :17:58.
Defending Commonwealth Champion Dai Greene will lead Wales' athletics | :17:59. | :18:01.
team at the Games in Glasgow next month. | :18:02. | :18:04.
The 400 metre hurdler from Llanelli - who took gold in Delhi - | :18:05. | :18:08.
is one of 27 able-bodied athletes in the squad. | :18:09. | :18:10.
London 2012 gold medallist Aled Davies will head a six-strong | :18:11. | :18:14.
We have set tough standards. It is reflective of how strong the sport | :18:15. | :18:32.
is in Wales. Well, one man who's missed out on | :18:33. | :18:37.
selection and won't be in Glasgow is The 35-year-old was hoping to end | :18:38. | :18:41.
his career by marking his fifth appearance | :18:42. | :18:44.
for Wales at a Commonwealth Games. I caught up with him - | :18:45. | :18:47.
and he told me it's very hard coming to terms with the reality | :18:48. | :18:51.
of not competing again. It has been tough. I tried my best | :18:52. | :19:10.
and that was not good enough. To go to a fifth Commonwealth Games would | :19:11. | :19:15.
have been a great achievement. I always felt close representing | :19:16. | :19:18.
Wales. Not to get that opportunity again is tough. How do you give this | :19:19. | :19:27.
up? I do not know. It will be tough. I have known for a couple of years | :19:28. | :19:31.
that the end is near. It has been hard. I will never find anything to | :19:32. | :19:37.
replace the roller-coaster I have been on for the last 17 years. He is | :19:38. | :19:55.
the Commonwealth silver medallist. You have had a great support system | :19:56. | :19:59.
around you. I have the family taken the fact that you are not going to | :20:00. | :20:03.
Glasgow? There are two sites. They are believed that I will be home | :20:04. | :20:07.
more often. But they are disappointed for me. They have been | :20:08. | :20:16.
fantastic. If it was not for them I would not have achieved half the | :20:17. | :20:23.
things I achieved. Christian Malcolm taking the bronze medal from Wales. | :20:24. | :20:31.
What is the highlight review? You do not appreciate the support and love | :20:32. | :20:37.
you get from Wales until you put on the Welsh vest. Are there plans for | :20:38. | :20:49.
another occasion to bow out? I do not know. I do not know whether to | :20:50. | :20:57.
carry on for the end of the season and compete and enjoy it. I cannot | :20:58. | :21:02.
just run for fun. There is nothing for me to run towards now. Do I | :21:03. | :21:07.
carry on until the end of the season, or end it now? I do not | :21:08. | :21:09.
know. Team Wales will also take 6 | :21:10. | :21:23.
badminton players to Glasgow, including doubles pairing | :21:24. | :21:26.
Carissa Turner and Sarah Thomas, who recently won two international | :21:27. | :21:28.
tournaments. In the men's, | :21:29. | :21:30.
35-year-old Joe Morgan will compete And Glamorgan's latest match | :21:31. | :21:33.
in the T20 Blast competition is They chose to bat first | :21:34. | :21:38.
against Somerset in Taunton. And you can follow the home side's | :21:39. | :21:51.
reply on BBC Radio Wales and online. They and 20 rugby team of Wales has | :21:52. | :22:10.
lost its second match in the Junior World Championships. | :22:11. | :22:20.
Boxing and finally it?s a big weekend for one | :22:21. | :22:22.
Former two-weight World Boxing Champion, Joe Calzaghe is being | :22:23. | :22:26.
inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in New York. | :22:27. | :22:29.
Joe retired back in 2009 after an undefeated 46 fight career. | :22:30. | :22:32.
He's just the fourth Welshman to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. | :22:33. | :22:38.
Warmer here in Wales, but there is a change on the way, Derek. | :22:39. | :22:41.
It looks like some of us are in for a real soaking tomorrow. | :22:42. | :22:52.
A risk of hail, gusty winds and flash flooding, but not everywhere. | :22:53. | :23:00.
And I can promise some sunshine this weekend as well. | :23:01. | :23:06.
Now in Bala the temperature dropped close to freezing last night, | :23:07. | :23:09.
but during the day it warmed-up with a high of 23 Celsius in Cardiff. | :23:10. | :23:17.
That warm and humid air has come up from France, but as it meets this | :23:18. | :23:20.
cooler air over the Atlantic that's the recipe for thunderstorms. | :23:21. | :23:23.
That's the story for tomorrow although the signs are it will | :23:24. | :23:26.
Overnight most places dry although I wouldn't rule out the odd heavy | :23:27. | :23:33.
The wind easing and warmer than last night. | :23:34. | :23:41.
The temperature not dropping below 12 Celsius. | :23:42. | :23:45.
Now there is a Met Office yellow warning | :23:46. | :23:47.
It covers most of Wales apart from the Southwest. | :23:48. | :23:53.
Some places dry but some rain and heavy showers are expected. | :23:54. | :24:04.
Torrential rain in places with hail and gusty winds and feeling muggy. | :24:05. | :24:11.
During the morning, thundery rain in the Northeast. | :24:12. | :24:17.
Intense downpours in places, over an inch of rain in a short space of | :24:18. | :24:26.
time with a risk of flash flooding, but some places will escape. | :24:27. | :24:33.
And later in the morning and afternoon the weather will improve. | :24:34. | :24:37.
Turning drier and brighter with some sunshine and one or two showers. | :24:38. | :24:40.
Tomorrow evening should be dry with some sunshine. | :24:41. | :24:45.
After midnight a few more showers may turn up. | :24:46. | :24:49.
You may catch a shower, but most places dry. | :24:50. | :24:54.
So, Sunday the best day of the weekend. | :24:55. | :24:59.
Some rain and showers at times, but some fair and warm weather as well. | :25:00. | :25:21.
Has devolution improved life for you and your family? | :25:22. | :25:25.
To mark the National Assembly's 15th birthday, every day next week we'll | :25:26. | :25:29.
be asking whether it has delivered a stronger economy | :25:30. | :25:31.
We start on Monday, when our Health Correspondent will be in Tredegar. | :25:32. | :25:45.
I will be here to look at what impact devolution has had on the | :25:46. | :25:49.
Welsh NHS. Now we return to our top story | :25:50. | :25:54.
tonight. Welsh veterans of the D-Day landings in World War Two have | :25:55. | :25:57.
returned to Northern France to mark the 70th anniversary of the mission | :25:58. | :26:01.
which ultimately led to victory over Nazi Germany. Abigail it was a | :26:02. | :26:04.
poignant anniversary? Abigail Neal in Normandy, marking 70 | :26:05. | :26:08.
years since the D-Day landings. And Certainly yes. The international | :26:09. | :26:21.
recognition they have had Certainly yes. The international | :26:22. | :26:25.
recognition they have had year is something the veterans have been | :26:26. | :26:29.
very proud of. When you go away from the bigger ceremonies, what strikes | :26:30. | :26:35.
you most is the wheelie as cheated by normal people. They are regarded | :26:36. | :26:46.
as superheroes. -- what strikes you most is the way they are treated by | :26:47. | :27:04.
normal people here. And after meeting some of those veterans today | :27:05. | :27:08.
the first Minister said that the award them a debt of gratitude. That | :27:09. | :27:21.
is all for now. Goodbye. | :27:22. | :27:26. |
