The First Minister, Carwyn Jones, has praised Peter Hain's

contribution to Welsh politics after he announced

he was standing down as an MP at the next election.

Mr Hain has represented Neath since 1991

and served in Labour cabinets in various roles.

Here's our Political Reporter Bethan Lewis.

Peter Hain was in the public eye for many years before he became a

politician. He was part of the anti-apartheid can gain. --

campaign. He had been selected to stand in next year 's election but

he has decided to stand down. I would remain active after finishing

as an MP. He was a key figure in the 1997 referendum campaign. His

influence goes beyond Wales. He was one of the people who was an

architect of devolution in 1997 and in the referendum later was up he

has contributed across the UK level and he was well known. Peter Hain

said he had discussions with the Labour leader before deciding to

stand down as an MP. That has led to spec elation about his future role.

He will not be drawn on what that could be. Remember of the local

party says his decision to stand down was a shock. We have lost a

first-class MP. He was totally committed to the constituency and he

has delivered for the constituency and for this country at Cabinet

level. Labour will now have two choose a new candidate. Peter Hain

says he is not going away. An investigation is underway

into the unexplained death His body was found at a flat
