Two men involved in a business ripping off vulnerable

:00:17.:00:20.

pensioners for driveway repairs, have been jailed for a total

:00:21.:00:22.

Bellway Paving, just one of the names they operated under, was

:00:23.:00:28.

first featured on BBC Wales' X-Ray programme nearly two years ago.

:00:29.:00:32.

Rachel Treadaway Williams was in court.

:00:33.:00:34.

This is Tom Connors, the man in charge of Bellway Paving.

:00:35.:00:38.

He arrived at court giving a thumbs up but knowing that he faced jail.

:00:39.:00:44.

The judge at Newport Crown Court heard how

:00:45.:00:46.

his businesses, operating under a variety of names, had scammed 14

:00:47.:00:51.

In total they lost around ?67,000 for grossly overpriced, substandard

:00:52.:01:05.

and often completely unnecessary home and driveway repairs.

:01:06.:01:10.

This victim has asked us to protect his identity.

:01:11.:01:14.

Bellway Paving conned him out of ?12,000 for a shoddy drive

:01:15.:01:18.

Then they tried to rip him off again using a different name

:01:19.:01:24.

and offering to put right the job they had done the first time.

:01:25.:01:29.

People like that are the lowest of the low as far as I am concerned.

:01:30.:01:35.

Last May, Operation Cosgrove, a joint operation between police

:01:36.:01:43.

and scam busters began raiding addresses around Cardiff.

:01:44.:01:47.

It was the biggest operation of its kind in Wales.

:01:48.:01:51.

Top of the list of people they wanted to speak to was Tom Connors.

:01:52.:01:56.

Connors along with Richard McCarthy, Ben Jones and Keith Palmer all

:01:57.:02:04.

Connors was jailed for 38 months. McCarthy got 25 months.

:02:05.:02:12.

Jones and Palmer received suspended jail sentences

:02:13.:02:16.

They physically pushed people around.

:02:17.:02:21.

Their mere presence brought an air of intimidation to those

:02:22.:02:24.

householders and they felt they had no choice but to pay.

:02:25.:02:29.

Judge Tom Crowther QC said these men had shown an utter lack of humanity

:02:30.:02:34.

and seen their victims for how much they could take from them.

:02:35.:02:38.

In one case they had been pitiless to the point of vicious and simply

:02:39.:02:42.

Wales' largest health board still has more work to do

:02:43.:02:53.

until it's fully fit for purpose, according to a report out today.

:02:54.:02:57.

The study of Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board was carried

:02:58.:03:01.

out by Healthcare Inspectorate Wales and the Wales Audit Office.

:03:02.:03:04.

It follows a highly critical report last year,

:03:05.:03:07.

which led to the former chairman and vice chair stepping down.

:03:08.:03:10.

The health board says it recognises there's more to do.

:03:11.:03:14.

North Wales Police officers will travel to Crete to join the search

:03:15.:03:18.

for Arthur Jones, who's been missing on the island for two weeks.

:03:19.:03:22.

They'll be joined by a member of the North Wales Mountain Rescue team.

:03:23.:03:25.

The 73-year-old is said to be a keen walker and hasn't been seen since

:03:26.:03:29.

A Pembrokeshire MP has accused health bosses in West Wales

:03:30.:03:35.

of relying on charities because there aren't enough GPs.

:03:36.:03:38.

Simon Hart was sent a letter from Hywel Dda Health Board saying

:03:39.:03:42.

the British Red Cross and the RNLI was helping to provide cover over

:03:43.:03:46.

They say this is part of an additional service.

:03:47.:03:51.

8.30am and there's a queue to see the doctor in Tenby.

:03:52.:03:57.

The queues in the morning are quite long - up

:03:58.:04:08.

I?ve just been standing outside here since 7.30am and I got in through

:04:09.:04:13.

the door two minutes ago and I've been told I can't see the doctor

:04:14.:04:17.

till 10.30am. Sent away for a cup of tea, basically.

:04:18.:04:19.

Patients across Wales are complaining about the difficulty

:04:20.:04:23.

GPs across the whole of Wales are experiencing considerable pressure

:04:24.:04:28.

their appointments systems, with the increasing complexity

:04:29.:04:30.

of the care that we provide, the demand for appointments,

:04:31.:04:33.

we deal with over 19 million consultation every year at least.

:04:34.:04:36.

And also the fact that we have a problem with recruitment and

:04:37.:04:38.

retention of GPs means that there are less GPs to see patients and the

:04:39.:04:42.

ones that are there are struggling to cope with the demand, and

:04:43.:04:45.

certainly I think the situation is only going to get worse.

:04:46.:04:47.

Hywel Dda Health Board says the situation here

:04:48.:04:49.

in Tenby has been caused by the resignation of four GPs which

:04:50.:04:52.

But it's been their response to questions about how they're going

:04:53.:04:57.

to handle the busy tourist season that has angered the local MP.

:04:58.:05:00.

The health board say they've commissioned additional services

:05:01.:05:02.

from the charitable sector, including the British Red Cross

:05:03.:05:04.

and the RNLI, to support Tenby over the summer months.

:05:05.:05:09.

Lifeguards team up with the Ambulance Service to deal with

:05:10.:05:12.

999 calls and can even administer some drugs.

:05:13.:05:17.

The lifeguards are here seven days a week, ten until six.

:05:18.:05:20.

They've got all the kit, they're trained, they're more than

:05:21.:05:23.

happy to come and help with anything, so it's just a great

:05:24.:05:26.

Partnership working is not new, but there are fears it could be used

:05:27.:05:33.

The RNLI have got a busy summer ahead of them.

:05:34.:05:42.

They've got lots of things that they've got to do.

:05:43.:05:45.

They're a charity and people pay their taxes to get a good

:05:46.:05:48.

Campaigners argue that uncertainty over the future of

:05:49.:05:52.

Withybush Hospital is undermining attempts to recruit medical staff

:05:53.:05:54.

Hywel Dda say they are working with Tenby surgery to resolve

:05:55.:05:58.

It's been revealed that a man from Cardiff, who called himself the

:05:59.:06:05.

father of terrorism, tried to travel abroad to join extremists groups.

:06:06.:06:08.

21-year-old Khuram Iqbal has admitted posting links

:06:09.:06:11.

He's due to be sentenced in the next few weeks.

:06:12.:06:16.

The assets of two men from Cardiff who appear to have joined

:06:17.:06:19.

a jihadist group in Syria have been frozen by the UK government.

:06:20.:06:22.

The Treasury restricted the finances of Reyaad Khan and Nasser Muthana

:06:23.:06:25.

The men, who met at school, appeared in an online video last month urging

:06:26.:06:32.

Muslims to fight with the militant group Isis in Syria and Iraq.

:06:33.:06:39.

A coroner who investigated the death of a man in custody after he was

:06:40.:06:42.

ejected from a nightclub in Bangor has warned that others could die

:06:43.:06:46.

At an inquest last month a jury concluded the actions

:06:47.:06:52.

of two officers contributed to the death of Hywel Hughes.

:06:53.:06:59.

Knowing the police service in North Wales as I do, if there is reliable

:07:00.:07:06.

evidence that there is a fault and that leads to a real risk of injury

:07:07.:07:11.

or death, of course, they will address it.

:07:12.:07:13.

Labour Party members in the Cynon Valley have gone on strike in

:07:14.:07:16.

Labour has insisted its candidate for the seat at the

:07:17.:07:20.

But local party members want to choose from a list of male

:07:21.:07:25.

Sport now, and Wales captain Ashley Williams will still be

:07:26.:07:30.

at Swansea City next season after signing a contract extension.

:07:31.:07:32.

There had been speculation the central defender was a target

:07:33.:07:35.

But he's added another three years to his current deal, which

:07:36.:07:41.

Cricket, and Glamorgan and Somerset take a point each away from the

:07:42.:07:47.

T20 Blast fixture - the match was cancelled due to wet weather.

:07:48.:07:52.

So are we in for more wet weather this weekend?

:07:53.:07:54.

It is going to improve. We do have some rain in the forecast tonight

:07:55.:08:09.

but today was the hottest day of the year so far across the UK. A top

:08:10.:08:13.

temperature of 29 Celsius in Norfolk. In Wales, 21 Celsius. Along

:08:14.:08:22.

coastal areas, it was much cooler than that. Tomorrow we can look

:08:23.:08:26.

forward to some sunshine and there will be a scattering of showers as

:08:27.:08:30.

well. Tonight that rain will continue its journey eastwards. It

:08:31.:08:35.

will become drier by Dawn and it is a very mild night. Gradually, that

:08:36.:08:43.

weather front will clear parts of south-east England through tomorrow

:08:44.:08:46.

and we will get a brief break from the wet weather. First thing

:08:47.:08:51.

tomorrow morning in Wales, a cloudy start but it will brighten up. A few

:08:52.:08:55.

showers dotted around. But the weather will include -- improve as

:08:56.:09:01.

we go into the afternoon. The showers could be heavy but it will

:09:02.:09:11.

be humid. A top temperature of 23 Celsius in London. In Wales,

:09:12.:09:16.

tomorrow afternoon, we can look forward to fewer showers and more in

:09:17.:09:20.

the way of sunshine. Probably the best day of the weekend so if you

:09:21.:09:24.

have got any outdoor activities, Saturday is the day. But it will

:09:25.:09:29.

feel fresher. Tomorrow night, variable amounts of cloud. A few

:09:30.:09:34.

showers in the south and temperatures getting into single

:09:35.:09:38.

figures. On Sunday, heavy, thundery showers in the forecast. Some

:09:39.:09:44.

sunshine in between. Also unsettled for the start of next week but

:09:45.:09:49.

hopefully by the middle of next week we can look forward to fine and dry

:09:50.:09:50.

conditions. From all of us, enjoy the weekend.

:09:51.:09:53.

Good night.
