Wales' team at the Commonwealth Games has been rocked

Reigning European champion Rhys Williams has been withdrawn

from the Commonwealth Games after failing a drugs test.

The 400 metre hurdler, son of rugby legend JJ Williams,

is the second Welsh athlete to miss the game is the second Welsh athlete

shocked. Just as shocked as everyone else. He is a good kid. Someone I

know would not knowingly take drugs. It is unfortunately a situation has

happened. Hopefully we can get to the bottom of it. In recent years,

Welsh and British athletics have developed a no excuse culture when

it comes to what athletes put in their own bodies. They are given

comprehensive information about what they can and cannot take. And the

advice is strict. Things like only ever jinking from sealed water

bottles and avoiding over the counter medicines unless they have

been tested in one of the official laboratories. He understands he is

responsible. They will have to suffer the consequences. They get

tested readily. They were tested, as were many athletes at that event.

The sports supplements will now be checked as part of the legal

process. One of the products he took is manufactured by a company in

Blaenau Gwent. It is understood company bosses are cooperating with

the athlete and carrying out their own tests. Sources close to the

company say they are confident they will be cleared of any blame. Their

website states their products contain no active ingredients on the

International Olympic Committee 's band list. Rhys Williams is the

second senior Welsh athlete to failing drugs test in the run-up to

the Commonwealth Games. Gareth Warburton was also suspended last

week for an antique to the violation. Welsh athletics say there

will now be an internal investigation. We are speaking to

everyone involved in performance athletics in Wales and understanding

what risks there are there. And working with Sport Wales and Team

Wales to make sure that if there is anything that needs to be done in

terms of tightening up the education. It is also the news that

medals today. It is a tough day but we have a big team, our biggest team

star of Welsh swimming made a stunning debut at his first major

games. Callum Jarvis broke David Davies is Welsh 200 meter freestyle

record to claim bronze and a first medal in the summing pool for Wales.

Hayley Thomas has three children with a range of needs. Autism, a

heart condition and expressive are among the things they need support

for. She had to fight for something that is called a statement of

special educational needs. That outlines the needs and the support

the child should be given. Schools have to provide the sort that

support outlined in that plan. Around 12,000 children have a

statement in Wales. The statement is imperative to my children being able

to access the curriculum. I am very pleased that I managed to get all

three of my children the statements that they needed. I think it is very

difficult for parents to go through the process. It is not an easy

process to go through. I had to take a year off work. And even then, it

was a full-time job. And now there are proposals to change the system.

Currently support falls into three categories, statements, school

action as school action plus. The proposed changes would see all of

the scrapped and replaced with individual development plans. And it

is these plans that some say could disadvantage Wales 's most

vulnerable children. I think when one looks at the White Paper and you

compare it to what is happening in England, Welsh children are being

short-changed. There is not the same degree of protection existing at the

moment for those with special educational needs as there are in

England. I think this White Paper is not doing anything to address that.

There is very little understanding at the moment but personally, they

do not seem to have the legal status that a statement has. If you have

not legally got to do what is on that statement, whether it would be

done is questionable. The consultation ends today and the

Welsh Government says it will respond that the appropriate time.
