Will Gompertz, BBC News. That's all from us. | :00:00. | :00:00.
Now it's time for the A man has been arrested | :00:00. | :00:17.
after an armed siege in the top floor restaurant | :00:18. | :00:20.
of the tallest building in Wales. Police were called to the Meridian | :00:21. | :00:23.
Tower in Swansea at 16:00PM this afternoon, | :00:24. | :00:26.
after a man was taken hostage No one was injured, | :00:27. | :00:28.
but the siege led to road closures and people were advised to stay | :00:29. | :00:35.
away, as Nick Palit reports. Towering | :00:36. | :00:40.
above the tranquil waters of Swansea Marina, there was a drama unfolding | :00:41. | :00:43.
on the 28th floor this afternoon. Diners and staff at the rooftop | :00:44. | :00:48.
Grape and Olive restaurant The alarm was raised at just | :00:49. | :00:51.
after 16:00PM and Specialist units, | :00:52. | :00:56.
including a tactical response team A fleet of ambulances were | :00:57. | :00:59.
on standby. The Police helicopter | :01:00. | :01:03.
hovering above. The 90m Meridian Tower is | :01:04. | :01:06.
a landmark on the Swansea skyline and is Wales' tallest building, | :01:07. | :01:10.
housing numerous luxury apartments. Residents were told to stay indoors | :01:11. | :01:27.
and then the lives were closed. After two hours a man was tasered, | :01:28. | :01:31.
arrested and a handgun was recovered. I can confirm a hostage | :01:32. | :01:36.
situation occurred on the 28th floor. Officers were called at 4pm | :01:37. | :01:46.
this evening, where a man had entered a public area and held | :01:47. | :01:50.
another male hostage and was in possession of a firearm. We are very | :01:51. | :01:55.
professional and well trained officers who have in their | :01:56. | :02:00.
possession, what we call less lethal options and Taser is a special | :02:01. | :02:07.
device which we can deploy safely to secure an individual. This has been | :02:08. | :02:13.
a tense and dangerous situation and it is successful. | :02:14. | :02:15.
The Armed siege meant Police closed off roads in and out | :02:16. | :02:18.
of the marina for several hours and that caused traffic chaos. | :02:19. | :02:20.
At the hotel next to the tower Michelle and Warren Morgans were | :02:21. | :02:23.
holding their wedding reception, but at one stage it looked like the | :02:24. | :02:26.
It is shocking when you're not allowed to go outside or anywhere | :02:27. | :02:40.
from a hotel. It is a shock. A day to remember? Not half. I won't | :02:41. | :02:44.
forget this in a hurry. tonight, with the situation over, | :02:45. | :02:49.
an air of normality returned to Residents were back | :02:50. | :02:52.
on their balconies once again enjoying the peace of | :02:53. | :02:55.
a summer evening after an afternoon The rest of the days news now | :02:56. | :02:57.
and a separated couple who sexually and physically abused their | :02:58. | :03:03.
children, and ones in their care, over a prolonged period, have been | :03:04. | :03:05.
jailed for a total of 25 years. At Cardiff Crown Court, the man was | :03:06. | :03:08.
jailed for 19 years and his ex-wife Neither can be named | :03:09. | :03:12.
for legal reasons. The abuse, in the Merthyr Tydfil | :03:13. | :03:19.
and Caerphilly areas, began in A man described as a | :03:20. | :03:22.
"master conman" has been sentenced to seven years in prison for | :03:23. | :03:30.
defrauding London Welsh Rugby Club. Neil Hollinshead bought | :03:31. | :03:32.
the club after tricking officials into believing he had over a | :03:33. | :03:34.
million pounds in his bank account. He also claimed to have ties to | :03:35. | :03:39.
the Saudi Royal family. Today he was convicted | :03:40. | :03:42.
of three counts of fraud There've been fresh calls tonight | :03:43. | :03:44.
for the chief executive of Around 200 people, including council | :03:45. | :03:50.
workers and members of the public, have been protesting over what they | :03:51. | :03:54.
describe as a loss of confidence It comes after police confirmed last | :03:55. | :03:58.
month a new investigation was being launched into payments he received | :03:59. | :04:05.
in lieu of pension contributions. Our political correspondent | :04:06. | :04:07.
Daniel Davies has more. These protesters say the name of | :04:08. | :04:27.
this council has been tarnished. The name is Jones. The pensions, | :04:28. | :04:37.
everything else, it is disgusting. It is time he left. I would like to | :04:38. | :04:44.
see Mr Jones step aside until the investigation by police is complete. | :04:45. | :04:51.
In January the County Council road cash payments made to Mr Jones and | :04:52. | :04:55.
another senior officer were unlawful. Four months later a police | :04:56. | :05:00.
investigation concluded there was no evidence to suggest a criminal | :05:01. | :05:05.
offence had taken place. In July, the council decided not to take any | :05:06. | :05:09.
further action to reclaim the money, worth more than ?45,000. A | :05:10. | :05:16.
week later a new police investigation was launched, after | :05:17. | :05:20.
fresh information emerged. It is not the first time we have seen scenes | :05:21. | :05:25.
like this. In 2012, staff at another council staged protests against an | :05:26. | :05:30.
lawful protest to their chief executives. Back in Pembrokeshire, | :05:31. | :05:33.
unions say more council workers would have come out today, but staff | :05:34. | :05:37.
were reluctant to demonstrate in public. Morale is poor. With trust | :05:38. | :05:47.
and confidence, we have conducted a ballot and within a week we turned | :05:48. | :05:59.
that around. We had 98% votes no saying they had no confidence in the | :06:00. | :06:04.
chief officer. Believers shiver the council said it is doing a good job | :06:05. | :06:11.
and improving services by keeping taxes down. The union representative | :06:12. | :06:15.
of Staffs has said they have lost confidence at the man at the top. | :06:16. | :06:19.
Someone who is unhappy is Steve Joseph, he left the council 's | :06:20. | :06:24.
ruling Independent group. He did not want to speak on camera but told me | :06:25. | :06:30.
staff morale in County Hall was low. The council declined to comment | :06:31. | :06:34.
today, like all authorities it is frozen staff pay and faces cutbacks. | :06:35. | :06:40.
It is also not alone in contracting controversy over the size of | :06:41. | :06:44.
salaries. Should the most senior official in the building step aside | :06:45. | :06:48.
from his job while the police investigate, some people clearly | :06:49. | :06:49.
think so. On the penultimate day | :06:50. | :06:53.
of the National Eisteddfod in Llanelli, some of Wales sporting | :06:54. | :06:56.
heroes have been honoured by the Gorsedd of the Bards. | :06:57. | :06:58.
Among them, Former Wales Rugby captain | :06:59. | :07:00.
Stephen Jones, and Paralympic gold Medallist and captain of Team Wales | :07:01. | :07:03.
at the Commonwealth Games, Aled Sion Davies. | :07:04. | :07:05.
The Eisteddfod chair, awarded for the best poem written in strict | :07:06. | :07:09.
metre, was won by Ceri Wyn Jones from Cardigan, for the second time. | :07:10. | :07:13.
Some sports news for you now and Cardiff City have opened their | :07:14. | :07:16.
Championship campaign tonight with a draw against Blackburn Rovers. | :07:17. | :07:18.
The Bluebirds took the lead with a goal in the 18th minute | :07:19. | :07:21.
but Blackburn equalised before the end of first half. | :07:22. | :07:28.
Cricket and Glamorgan have lost their one | :07:29. | :07:30.
day cup match against Durham by 52 runs at the Swalec Stadium. | :07:31. | :07:33.
The visitors won the toss and elected to bat. | :07:34. | :07:36.
Durham scored 185, but Glamorgan were all out for 133. | :07:37. | :07:43.
Some Golf news for you and Wales's Jamie Donaldson is 1 under | :07:44. | :07:46.
par in his second round at the US PGA Championship in Valhalla. | :07:47. | :07:49.
So, we could see some pretty nasty weather this weekend, | :07:50. | :07:54.
While it is not a straightforward story but I will try to put as much | :07:55. | :08:08.
detail as possible. Harry Kane at birth is heading towards the United | :08:09. | :08:12.
Kingdom and it is likely to affect us on Sunday. The track is uncertain | :08:13. | :08:17.
so keep an eye on the forecast over the next few days. Tonight is a calm | :08:18. | :08:22.
night with clear skies, temperatures 11-14?. It is a dry story. A fine | :08:23. | :08:28.
start tomorrow, the best day of the weekend. The odd shower in the South | :08:29. | :08:32.
and mid Wales. Bright and sunny spells ahead further north. The rest | :08:33. | :08:39.
of the United Kingdom, we have a day of sunshine and showers, a little | :08:40. | :08:43.
bit of rain in a North East Scotland. For the majority of us it | :08:44. | :08:47.
is a fine Saturday with temperatures ranging between 18 to 24 Celsius. | :08:48. | :08:52.
Here in Wales tomorrow, the risk of a few showers, at least they'll be | :08:53. | :08:58.
some brightness in between. It'll be dry with temperatures ranging | :08:59. | :09:02.
between 18-21. Quite blustery in the coastal areas and tomorrow night the | :09:03. | :09:07.
winds will pick up and we'll see the the rain will then start to | :09:08. | :09:11.
approach. All eyes will then be on the deep area of low pressure making | :09:12. | :09:15.
its way in from the south-west, gradually tracking north and east | :09:16. | :09:18.
was. This is where we think it is going to be on Sunday but it could | :09:19. | :09:21.
all change tomorrow city keep an eye on the forecast. The Met office have | :09:22. | :09:26.
issued a yellow warning. We have a lot of rain with high tide and | :09:27. | :09:29.
strong winds, and not a good, nation. Much cooler on Sunday with | :09:30. | :09:39.
highs of 18 Celsius. It's a of blustery showers of brightness for | :09:40. | :09:43.
the afternoon. Hopefully some things will improve. On Monday we have | :09:44. | :09:46.
blustery showers with some sunshine in between, have a good weekend | :09:47. | :09:47.
thank you. By. We're back with our next update | :09:48. | :09:50.
at 17:30PM For now though, from all of us here, | :09:51. | :09:53.
have a great weekend. Over the last month, | :09:54. | :10:18.
the crisis in Gaza | :10:19. | :10:21. |
