degrees. Thursday, more of the same. Is that is all from us. Now on

:00:00.:00:00.

Welcome to Wales Today - our top story:

:00:07.:00:07.

Joshua fell from a bridge after being chased by bullies who targeted

:00:08.:00:10.

Doctors say he'll never walk again - tonight we talk to his parents.

:00:11.:00:28.

He is a young boy and doesn't deserve what has happened to him. I

:00:29.:00:34.

wish I could take it away for him. The helicopters and warships are

:00:35.:00:42.

in place for the summit - Welsh defence companies set out

:00:43.:00:44.

their shop window to showcase to world leaders what they make

:00:45.:00:52.

in Wales. Those winter storms smashing

:00:53.:00:57.

our coast - why we should think twice about

:00:58.:00:59.

restoring our disappearing beaches. And the movie of the unlikely bond

:01:00.:01:07.

between striking miners and Gay The place was packed and there was a

:01:08.:01:24.

lot of curiosity. We were overprotective to start with but

:01:25.:01:27.

they fitted in and it was a brilliant evening.

:01:28.:01:28.

A teenager has been told he will never walk again after falling

:01:29.:01:32.

from a bridge while he was being chased by bullies.

:01:33.:01:35.

Joshua Davies from Pontypridd has Asperger's

:01:36.:01:37.

Syndrome, and was fleeing from boys who were throwing stones at him.

:01:38.:01:40.

He fell 50 feet into the River Taff, breaking his spine in four places.

:01:41.:01:44.

His mother believes he was bullied because of his disability.

:01:45.:01:46.

Described by his mother as a boy with a positive attitude,

:01:47.:01:54.

Joshua Davies is now facing months of intensive treatment

:01:55.:01:57.

after the accident which almost cost him his life.

:01:58.:02:00.

Joshua was crossing this bridge in Pontypridd when a group

:02:01.:02:04.

He climbed onto the outside of the railings to escape under the bridge

:02:05.:02:10.

Today his stepfather and mother were back at the scene.

:02:11.:02:22.

They say he'd been bullied several times by the same gang

:02:23.:02:27.

of boys because he has a form of autism called Asperger's Syndrome.

:02:28.:02:35.

I feel terrible. I don't want him to be there. I want to take it all away

:02:36.:02:45.

for him. He is a young boy and doesn't deserve what he has been

:02:46.:02:52.

left with. I Jewish -- I just wish I could take it all away. I know he

:02:53.:02:57.

has been bullied and there are other boys that have been ballroom --

:02:58.:03:01.

bullet. As much as he pretends everything is OK, if you are being

:03:02.:03:08.

bullied, you need to tell someone, so someone can help you. His brother

:03:09.:03:22.

and sister are very upset. My daughter broke down in tears because

:03:23.:03:26.

she didn't like to see her brother in that situation.

Autism, and the charity which supports people with autism

and Cardiff - most likely affected. Our political correspondent

was going to be hosting some important guests, look behind me.

British warship HMS Duncan arriving in Cardiff Bay this afternoon.

:04:38.:04:52.

It is here to provide protection and it will -- I have been finding out

:04:53.:05:04.

what the Wales summit means for the region.

:05:05.:05:07.

Months of preparations - now Nato is here.

:05:08.:05:09.

British warship HMS Duncan arriving in Cardiff Bay this afternoon.

:05:10.:05:12.

On shore and in the skies there's a huge police and military presence.

:05:13.:05:15.

It is a big ship. There is .7 of a meter either side. Here she is and

:05:16.:05:27.

many preparations are going on for a busy programme. From Thursday

:05:28.:05:32.

evening, when the defence ministers have dinner on board in the hangar

:05:33.:05:38.

where we are already starting to make preparations.

:05:39.:05:48.

After the Second World War, and at the start of the cold war, 12

:05:49.:05:52.

European and north American allies banded together for mutual defence.

:05:53.:05:55.

By the time of its last summit in Chicago two years ago,

:05:56.:05:58.

So with no cold war to fight, what is NATO's role?

:05:59.:06:08.

Under its founding Washington Treaty NATO members agreed that an armed

:06:09.:06:10.

attack on one of them is considered an attack against them all.

:06:11.:06:15.

65 years later, NATO now has 28 members.

:06:16.:06:19.

It's expanded eastwards into former communist territory - Albania and

:06:20.:06:25.

Croatia are the newest members, with more nations knocking on the door.

:06:26.:06:29.

60 heads of state and governments will be at the Celtic Manor.

:06:30.:06:36.

Behind the ring of steel they'll discuss

:06:37.:06:37.

the future of Afghanistan, where NATO troops are preparing to pull

:06:38.:06:41.

One man whose been on the inside in the past, is the UK's former

:06:42.:06:48.

It is not for show, it is very serious. They have been working on

:06:49.:07:08.

big issues but the key questions on what is going to happen in

:07:09.:07:13.

Afghanistan after the withdrawal, NATO forces, what will happen to the

:07:14.:07:18.

Ukraine, they are big issues and it will require heads to offer clear

:07:19.:07:22.

opinions. The last time the UK hosted a NATO

:07:23.:07:23.

summit was in 1990. The Berlin Wall had come down, and

:07:24.:07:26.

reaching out to Russia was the goal. Thanks to the Ukraine crisis,

:07:27.:07:29.

NATO is once again figuring out how Russia has acted very aggressively

:07:30.:07:45.

and it has become a big concern to many of the Allies. That is not the

:07:46.:07:53.

only concern. It is stability in North Africa and in the Middle East

:07:54.:07:57.

which is a big concern for allies and they need to grapple with those

:07:58.:08:00.

challenges as well. NATO's mission used to be so simple,

:08:01.:08:04.

in the old days - Now, with complicated conflicts

:08:05.:08:07.

smouldering on its borders, today's alliance is coming to Wales

:08:08.:08:10.

to decide its modern mission. Some

:08:11.:08:20.

of the biggest defence companies operating in Wales, including

:08:21.:08:22.

General Dynamics and Airbus, will be showcasing their products for world

:08:23.:08:25.

leaders at the NATO summit. The industry here employs thousands

:08:26.:08:30.

of people here and it's hoping to use the event to

:08:31.:08:33.

generate more business. Here's our business correspondent,

:08:34.:08:37.

Brian Meechan. Defence is a significant industry

:08:38.:08:52.

providing highly paid jobs. 5000 people are employed here in Wales

:08:53.:08:56.

and the businesses involved generate ?1 billion in income according to a

:08:57.:09:06.

trade group. Here, they are working on the British Army's next

:09:07.:09:10.

generation of armoured vehicle. A prototype will be on display at the

:09:11.:09:17.

summit. We supplied to the UK but also other NATO members. Having the

:09:18.:09:23.

opportunity to showcase our technologies and expertise to that

:09:24.:09:32.

group is fantastic for us. For production will begin in the next

:09:33.:09:36.

three years and the company believes once it is in use by the British

:09:37.:09:40.

Army, it will lead to demand from other countries boosting jobs in

:09:41.:09:47.

South Wales. Kevin Connell says it is about ensuring maximum support

:09:48.:09:51.

the troops in the field. When you think about the battlefield, it is

:09:52.:10:00.

about information superiority. Trips like the 1st Battalion The Royal

:10:01.:10:04.

Welsh, Britain's rapid reaction force which is likely to form part

:10:05.:10:08.

of the discussion at the summit. The industry faces tough times as

:10:09.:10:11.

countries around the world have cut their defence budgets. This is one

:10:12.:10:18.

company operating in the country. Thousands of jobs are in South

:10:19.:10:35.

Wales. The reason a military testing centre also in Wales. The summit has

:10:36.:10:41.

already seen protests against the military is of NATO. We live in a

:10:42.:10:45.

democracy and we have to look at the debate. What the facilities enable

:10:46.:10:53.

us to do is to defend their freedom and democracy. This summit will hear

:10:54.:11:05.

the increase in defence spending. Higher defence budgets means

:11:06.:11:08.

potentially more contracts and jobs here in Wales if the Newport summit

:11:09.:11:23.

can be capitalised on. Elsewhere in Cardiff and Newport, we know the

:11:24.:11:27.

NATO summit is causing some disruption for travellers. There are

:11:28.:11:31.

no plans to close the M4 between here and Cardiff and the Celtic

:11:32.:11:36.

Manor isn't out in the summit. The authorities are hoping the worst of

:11:37.:11:42.

the disruption will be concentrated to a fuel pinch points but the

:11:43.:11:45.

message they are giving out to everyone driving in the region is

:11:46.:11:50.

allow extra time and be ready for delays.

:11:51.:11:52.

A soldier from Wrexham was killed during an attack by insurgents on

:11:53.:11:56.

an army check point in Afghanistan in 2012 an inquest has heard.

:11:57.:11:59.

Grenadier Guardsman Jamie Shadrake who was 20,

:12:00.:12:02.

The coroner said, he was satisfied that the army had since

:12:03.:12:07.

We believed in Jamie and what he was doing in Afghanistan. His selfless

:12:08.:12:22.

sacrifice has helped the people of Afghanistan and I am so proud of my

:12:23.:12:27.

son and what he has achieved in his short life. As a family, we are

:12:28.:12:32.

grateful to the help and support that we have received from the

:12:33.:12:35.

Grenadier Guards through this difficult time.

:12:36.:12:37.

A Welsh country and western singer, who hosts a programme on

:12:38.:12:40.

BBC Radio Cymru, has apologised for posting a comment

:12:41.:12:42.

on Twitter, which was offensive about the Pakistani community.

:12:43.:12:44.

John Jones later deleted the comment, which said there were

:12:45.:12:47.

"too many of THEM in this country" and apologised.

:12:48.:12:50.

BBC Wales said the original tweet was totally unacceptable.

:12:51.:12:54.

It has written to him formally, outlining the high standards it

The mother of 12-year-old Isaac Nash, who was swept out to sea

:12:58.:13:04.

off Anglesey on Friday, has thanked rescue teams

:13:05.:13:07.

Isaac, from Huddersfield in Yorkshire, was on holiday with his

:13:08.:13:11.

family when he got into difficulty in the water near Aberffraw.

The number of estranged couples having to represent themselves

:13:17.:13:19.

in family courts because they have no solicitor has

:13:20.:13:21.

Tonight it's claimed, it could result in a generation

:13:22.:13:32.

A former family court judge, has told this programme -

:13:33.:13:36.

the emotional, mental and psychological wellbeing of children

:13:37.:13:37.

This mother is fighting to see her children. Her ex-husband denies her

:13:38.:13:57.

access. It is devastating and a shocked that someone can do this to

:13:58.:14:02.

your kids. One minute the perfect relationship and then nothing at

:14:03.:14:07.

all. I feel emotionally drained. No self-esteem, no-confidence, how such

:14:08.:14:13.

a person can do this. There is nothing on paper to say why I can't

:14:14.:14:19.

see my kids. Her ex-husband has breached a court order which says

:14:20.:14:25.

she can have access to them. She has two represent herself but her

:14:26.:14:30.

husband can afford one. Before you go to court, you can't sleep, I have

:14:31.:14:36.

panic attacks and can't eat. You walk in there and I have no

:14:37.:14:40.

confidence at all. I don't know much about the legal side of things, all

:14:41.:14:45.

the words that they use and it is difficult to stand there and it is

:14:46.:14:49.

difficult to stand there knowing his corner and I stood there on my own.

:14:50.:15:00.

In April,, legal cover was halted unless prove you are a domestic

:15:01.:15:12.

violence victim. 58% didn't have solicitors when fighting for a

:15:13.:15:16.

residence orders or access to their children. Some say there could be

:15:17.:15:20.

extremely damaging for the children involved. The welfare of the child

:15:21.:15:27.

is paramount in these cases and that is a given. It also says that delay

:15:28.:15:34.

is the enemy of a child's best interests. The resolution takes

:15:35.:15:42.

longer and it must therefore be damaging to the child. Legal aid

:15:43.:15:49.

costs taxpayers ?2 billion every year but Crispin insists money

:15:50.:15:54.

should not have been cut from cases that involve children. A number of

:15:55.:16:01.

ink -- organisations agree. It can't be in the child's best interests and

:16:02.:16:06.

only time they tell that we have a generation of children who, through

:16:07.:16:10.

no fault of their own, have not been well served by the system and their

:16:11.:16:16.

best interests haven't been taken account of. The Ministry of Justice

:16:17.:16:23.

says it has introduced major reforms to reduce delays and keep family

:16:24.:16:25.

dispute out of court. Mediation doesn't work for everyone

:16:26.:16:35.

as this mother knows. She says she will do all she came to see her

:16:36.:16:37.

children again. Much more to come

:16:38.:16:39.

before 7 o'clock Founded in the 1920s, to help improve the lives

:16:40.:16:41.

of ex-servicemen, now the Royal British Legion is undergoing its

:16:42.:16:44.

biggest transformation in 93 years. And the movie of the unlikely bond

:16:45.:16:47.

between striking miners and gay Many of our beaches suffered

:16:48.:16:51.

a decade's erosion in just a few weeks in the battering

:16:52.:17:08.

of the storms last winter. The National Trust says up to 60% of

:17:09.:17:11.

its beaches lost significant amounts of sand, but the organisation is

:17:12.:17:16.

warning against what it calls hard We should let nature repair

:17:17.:17:19.

the damage it says. Some of the damage was apparent that

:17:20.:17:35.

there was a temptation to dwell on those things we had put them in the

:17:36.:17:40.

first place. Here, a wrecked promenade and coastal defence. In

:17:41.:17:45.

Aberystwyth, a public shelter that has been rebuilt. What about the

:17:46.:18:09.

beaches? I lost 40 tonnes of sand. I have been coming here 37 years. I

:18:10.:18:18.

have never known it this bad. Here, there is plenty of sand left on the

:18:19.:18:24.

beach even if the steps have got a bit steep at this year. What about

:18:25.:18:28.

the temptation to do something about this emotion? There should be

:18:29.:18:33.

resisted according to some. The cliffs here have eroded and

:18:34.:18:37.

according to The National Trust, there has been damaged to the beach.

:18:38.:18:43.

It wasn't the waves going up the beach that was the problem, it was

:18:44.:18:49.

the backwash. They were so big they were scouring away their sand and

:18:50.:18:54.

taking it far out to sea. What about the temptation to intervene and

:18:55.:18:59.

putting an engine niche in -- engineering solutions? We are

:19:00.:19:08.

developing policies which are future proofing our coast using soft

:19:09.:19:11.

approaches which are more easy to recover so we allow nature to do its

:19:12.:19:15.

thing but to recover quickly after the storms have happened, then let

:19:16.:19:20.

those natural processes bring back the sand as time goes by. In places

:19:21.:19:29.

where property and infrastructure like roads and railway lines need

:19:30.:19:33.

protecting, they met -- that may not be possible but nature will do its

:19:34.:19:35.

work. Who looks after our soldiers

when they return from active duty? The Royal British Legion is

get the help they need. This is a charity eager to appeal to

:19:48.:20:03.

a newer, younger audience. In sharp contrast to the faded pool halls of

:20:04.:20:07.

the past, the new shop front is a drop-in centre in Cardiff on the

:20:08.:20:13.

first in Wales. There has always been information available but it

:20:14.:20:17.

has not been so easy to access and that is the biggest problem. People

:20:18.:20:22.

here it is out there but where do you go to find it? Who do you speak

:20:23.:20:29.

to? Who will answer your enquiry. That is what we haven't had before.

:20:30.:20:35.

Founded in 1921 to improve the lives of ex-service personnel, the British

:20:36.:20:39.

Legion is best known for its annual Poppy Appeal but it has struggled to

:20:40.:20:42.

get its message of advice and financial support across to the

:20:43.:20:50.

Germans from recent conflicts. Its membership of 16,000 is ageing and

:20:51.:20:53.

declining. Local branches are in danger of folding. Normandy veteran

:21:07.:21:12.

can forward and we try to get hold of ex-service people but they don't

:21:13.:21:19.

seem interested. We are losing our secretary and we may fold if we

:21:20.:21:25.

don't get one. New centres are due to open soon in Swansea and Wrexham.

:21:26.:21:32.

It is practical support that many men and women need. Neal Adams was

:21:33.:21:36.

given a grant to set up his personal fitness business. I wasn't sure

:21:37.:21:42.

which avenue to go down. I needed funding as well. The British Legion

:21:43.:21:50.

put me on track and May Day few phone calls and waved a magic wand.

:21:51.:21:55.

There are now several charities hope to help ex-service men and women.

:21:56.:21:58.

They hope to fill the gap. Cricket and at the close on day 3 of

:21:59.:22:04.

Glamorgan's Championship match with Kent in Canterbury, Glamorgan were

:22:05.:22:08.

150 for 3 in the second innings. Earlier the home side made 387

:22:09.:22:10.

in their first innings It was a clash of cultures that

:22:11.:22:18.

led to an unlikely friendship. In 1984 a group of gay

:22:19.:22:23.

and lesbian activists from London arrived in the South Wales valleys

:22:24.:22:26.

to support striking miners. It's a largely forgotten moment

:22:27.:22:28.

in Welsh history that's inspired Pride, starring Bill Nighy

:22:29.:22:31.

and Imelda Staunton, has its UK premiere tonight and is being tipped

:22:32.:22:34.

as the feel good hit of the year. When you are in a battle against the

:22:35.:22:53.

enemy, find out you have a friend that you never knew existed, that is

:22:54.:23:00.

the best feeling in the world. Set in Wales chewing the miners strike,

:23:01.:23:04.

it tells the story of two different communities that form an unexpected

:23:05.:23:09.

bond. The story of how gay and lesbian activists joined forces with

:23:10.:23:14.

minors sounds like pure fiction but it actually happened, faxback took

:23:15.:23:20.

the cast members by surprise. I was amazed that I hadn't known the story

:23:21.:23:24.

because it is such an amazing story and something that I think every

:23:25.:23:31.

Welsh person should know about. Much of the film was shot on location and

:23:32.:23:40.

it was here in the autumn of 84, that the two different cultures met

:23:41.:23:44.

for the first time. The gay and lesbian movement had been raising

:23:45.:23:48.

money for the striking miners and they saw them as another group who

:23:49.:23:52.

were being ostracised by society at the time. They decided to present

:23:53.:23:56.

their donations in person to the miners of the Dulais Valley but they

:23:57.:24:00.

were not sure what reception they would get as they told the BBC. 27

:24:01.:24:15.

years -- we went down and we were nervous and we didn't know what to

:24:16.:24:20.

expect. Christine Powell was there that night. The place was packed

:24:21.:24:25.

because there was a lot of curiosity. We were overly protective

:24:26.:24:31.

but they fitted in and it was a brilliant evening. Real friendships

:24:32.:24:35.

were formed. Miners put the campaigners are up during this time.

:24:36.:24:40.

Philip and Marilyn were one couple who did that. They thought we were

:24:41.:24:48.

victimised like they were. They came to help us and we were helping their

:24:49.:24:54.

cause as well. In 1985, 70 miners from South Wales forbid their way to

:24:55.:24:59.

London to take pride in the annual Gay pride march. It was a display of

:25:00.:25:05.

solidarity fought two unlikely groups that had found common ground.

:25:06.:25:13.

It is one part that has been recreated in the film, Pride. From

:25:14.:25:22.

feel-good news to feel good weather. Cloud is increasing overnight and it

:25:23.:25:46.

could be thick enough to produce the odd spot of drizzle. Temperatures

:25:47.:25:51.

around 15 Celsius. A cloudy start tomorrow. Fog patches will lift to

:25:52.:26:01.

leave a dry day. With sunny spells developing, feeling quite warm in

:26:02.:26:04.

the sunshine with temperatures creeping up into the low 20s. 22

:26:05.:26:10.

Celsius is possible in Cardiff. Tomorrow evening is clearer for a

:26:11.:26:15.

time. We have variable cloud over night and not to Chile. A similar

:26:16.:26:29.

story for Thursday. West should be rest. I pressure is keeping things

:26:30.:26:41.

settled. These low pressure systems to the south and west try to push in

:26:42.:26:46.

but the high pressure could hold out and keep them at bay. We have a

:26:47.:26:51.

greater chance of rain pushing in on Sunday. It could still change. A lot

:26:52.:26:58.

of dry and unsettled weather to come.

:26:59.:27:00.

It's coming up to seven o'clock, the main news again.

:27:01.:27:02.

Joshua Davies has been told he will never walk again after falling

:27:03.:27:05.

He says he was being chased by bullies who were throwing stones

:27:06.:27:09.

His mother believes he was bullied because of his disability.

:27:10.:27:21.

HMS Duncan has arrived in Cardiff Bay ahead of the NATO summit in

:27:22.:27:28.

Newport and stop delegates will be discussing the crisis in the Ukraine

:27:29.:27:32.

and Afghanistan's future. Motorists are being warned to expect

:27:33.:27:38.

disruption while the summit is in Newport. I will have an update at

:27:39.:27:44.

eight o'clock and at 10:25pm. Thank you for watching. Goodbye.
