Good evening from the centre of Cardiff, where tonight world

leaders are gathered for a working dinner at the end of

Barack Obama and representatives from 28 nations have spent the day

at the Celtic Manor in Newport, their agenda full of Afghanistan,

One of the most important gatherings of political leaders

Protestors have taken to the streets, but not

Police say there have been a number of arrests in Cardiff this evening.

But there was a warm welcome at Mount Pleasant school in Newport

earlier for the first serving US president to visit Wales.

Our first report tonight is from our Welsh affairs editor

It was one of the biggest days in the Welsh political history, as far

as physical gatherings go. The nations gathered in Newport and

Cardiff for what is probably one of the most important alliance meetings

in a quarter of a century. To the voters -- tonight the focus shifted

to Cardiff Castle, where they will have dinner ahead of the second and

final day of discussions. The small talk over dinner was strictly

limited. The first people to greet the US

president weren't the other leaders gathered at the Celtic Manor

from the Prince of Wales division played Men of Harlech as the flags

to the people of Wales for their generous hospitality for so many

delegations on behalf of NATO and Today

the world has truly come to Wales. Everyone had gathered

for a summit which it said would shape the future of NATO but first

this room packed with the world's most powerful military leaders

paused to remember the fallen. The ceremonials over, it was time

for the real business to begin. But it wasn't Afghanistan that was

dominating the agenda, Events in Ukraine, Iraq,

Syria and elsewhere meant a note We meet at a crucial time

in the history of our alliance. The world faces many dangerous and

evolving threats and it is clear that NATO is as you vital to our

future as it has been in our past. Tomorrow it will be back to Newport

and more talks to resolve problems Our political reporter

the global leaders are enjoying the fine dining of the celebrated

chef Stephen Terry as we speak. It seems that things are coming to a

close here. This is very much

a working dinner so the discussions that have been ongoing throughout

the day at the Celtic Manor resort at Newport are still being discussed

here at Cardiff Castle. There are two main things

on the agenda. Firstly, they will be discussing

the ongoing crisis in Ukraine and secondly, the focus will be on the

issue of rising extremist Islamic There will be some fine dining for

sure but also some tough talking. We understand there have been three

arrests as global leaders made their way to

the banquet in Cardiff Castle. We understand around 2,000 people

thronged the streets of Cardiff, I understand the number of curious

bystanders far outnumbered There was

an earlier protest this morning when 250 protesters marched from

the centre of Newport city centre to But, again, the numbers are

far fewer than expected. Although there are undoubtedly

pockets of ill feeling towards Nato, the people here

in Wales are generally content that Wales can provide

the backdrop to the discussions. Well, earlier this evening,

the Prince of Wales hosted a reception for world leaders

and guests from all walks of Welsh President Obama was

among the guests. I can see the extraordinary beauty,

the wonderful people, I would encourage everyone

in the States to come to Wales. Some other news in brief

fairly mild night. First thing tomorrow morning it is a bit of a

cloudy start, especially away from the coast. Things will improve as

the morning goes on. We will see this cold weather front bringing in

some rain across Northern Ireland and Scotland. Behind it is fresh air

a bit clearer air. Further south and east, try and east, triad brighter

with highs of 22 Celsius. Looking fine across Wales tomorrow afternoon

but compared to today, a lot more cloud. The cloud could be thick

enough to produce the odd spot of light rain or drizzle. 19-21

Celsius. Another fairly quiet night tomorrow night but that cold front

in Anglesey and Wrexham, bringing a little bit of rain. Further south it

is dry and mild. Temperatures between 12 and 16 Celsius. Once the

front clears, fresher air behind it. Vera air as well so we can look

forward to some sunshine but feeling cooler with highs of 15 and 20

Celsius. The bitches about where they should be for September. Dry

weather to look forward to on Sunday with some sunny spells. Highs of 16

and 19 Celsius. For the start of next week, high-pressure taking

charge with cold nights but dry and sunny by day.

You may be able to hear a helicopter in the background, perhaps one of

the delegates taking off from the castle.

Well, tomorrow an aerial display by military jets

from nine countries, including the RAF's Red Arrows, will fly past

as they make their way to the Celtic Manor.

Of course, leaders will resume their summit discussions tomorrow,

and we'll be bringing you the latest throughout the day.
