A summit to save the steel industry and the thousands of jobs in Wales | :00:00. | :00:08.
And Mason Jones died after eating E.Coli | :00:09. | :00:11.
infected meat from a butcher, but there will no new inquest | :00:12. | :00:14.
It's a cornerstone of our economy, supporting thousands of jobs, | :00:15. | :00:36.
but ministers admit the steel industry in Wales is now in crisis. | :00:37. | :00:39.
Industry leaders met in Cardiff earlier, with the Economy Minister | :00:40. | :00:41.
saying that she will look at whether business rates could be cut to help. | :00:42. | :00:45.
Here's our Economics Correspondent, Sarah Dickins. | :00:46. | :00:53.
Welsh steel, a vital industry and a basic ingredient for so many others. | :00:54. | :00:56.
Demand for steel around the world has not recovered | :00:57. | :01:02.
And the market here at home is facing particular problems. | :01:03. | :01:08.
In Wales, steelmakers have high electricity charges, much | :01:09. | :01:10.
Business rates that the unions say work against investment. | :01:11. | :01:16.
And a high pound makes Welsh steel expensive to sell to others | :01:17. | :01:20.
and the money paid for Welsh steel is dropping. | :01:21. | :01:23.
We have to look very carefully at our budget. | :01:24. | :01:25.
We cannot spend more than we are bringing in in terms | :01:26. | :01:32.
We have also got to ensure that we won't be told that we are unfairly | :01:33. | :01:41.
helping an injury that is subject to such an stringent restraints | :01:42. | :01:44.
Newport docks with its new crane costing ?1.6 million. | :01:45. | :01:50.
The docks is handling 20% more cargo than a year ago, | :01:51. | :01:53.
Weeks ought a lot of steel here from Newport, we also import to | :01:54. | :01:57.
balance that UK market with a number of commodities and | :01:58. | :02:00.
There is always a balance and it varies from month-to-month, | :02:01. | :02:04.
The price of steel around the world is governed by how much is | :02:05. | :02:08.
wanted, how much demand there is for it, and China has been buying a lot | :02:09. | :02:11.
That growth is now slowing down and Chinese steel is coming into Europe. | :02:12. | :02:16.
It is all part of global demand and that is one of the many factors that | :02:17. | :02:20.
Sources in the industry say Tata Steel is losing | :02:21. | :02:23.
There is no sign that the Chinese economy is about to pick up | :02:24. | :02:28.
There is no sign that the pound is going to get weaker. | :02:29. | :02:36.
But you need quick action, don't you? | :02:37. | :02:38.
But is why we try to highlight within the four or five asks that we | :02:39. | :02:45.
have supported with industry, there is stuff that needs to happen | :02:46. | :02:47.
That message from the unions and companies that something needs to be | :02:48. | :02:56.
done to help Welsh steel was clearly spelt out to the minister today. | :02:57. | :02:59.
She said she is listening but many of steel's problems are | :03:00. | :03:02.
The mother of five-year-old Mason Jones, who died from ecoli | :03:03. | :03:08.
in his school dinner in 2005, has told BBC Wales that she is | :03:09. | :03:11.
considering legal action against the Crown prosecution service. | :03:12. | :03:13.
Sharon Jeffreys' attempt to have a new inquest into her son's death | :03:14. | :03:16.
was turned down today and says the decision not to pursue a charge | :03:17. | :03:19.
of manslaughter against the butcher who supplied the meat was wrong. | :03:20. | :03:22.
She's been speaking to our reporter, Caroline Evans. | :03:23. | :03:37.
It is ten years since five-year-old Mason Jones died | :03:38. | :03:39.
after eating contaminated meat in his school dinner. | :03:40. | :03:44.
We live with this every day and it is never going to go away | :03:45. | :03:47.
and especially now because there is no justice for him. | :03:48. | :03:50.
He was one of more than 150 people infected by the E.Coli | :03:51. | :03:58.
bacteria as it spread on meat supplied to 40 schools | :03:59. | :04:01.
Tests found the exact same strain which killed Mason was present | :04:02. | :04:06.
Its manager, William John Tudor, admitted breaking food safety laws | :04:07. | :04:12.
But a case of manslaughter against him was not pursued. | :04:13. | :04:16.
The Crown Prosecution Service said there was not enough evidence. | :04:17. | :04:18.
In 2010, the coroner decided he could not conclude Mason | :04:19. | :04:21.
We do not feel that Mason has received proper justice. | :04:22. | :04:38.
They appealed but today they have been told by the High Court that | :04:39. | :04:41.
decision will not be overturned and the inquest will not be reopened. | :04:42. | :04:44.
Following the inquest, the coroner said he had considered | :04:45. | :04:46.
a catalogue of horrific failures at the meat factory and that Mason | :04:47. | :04:49.
had probably died as the result of eating meat repaired with this | :04:50. | :04:52.
Today Sharon showed me a letter from the CPS admitting it had made | :04:53. | :04:56.
a mistake in not pursuing a case for manslaughter | :04:57. | :05:03.
and told me she is now considering legal action against them. | :05:04. | :05:12.
I believe that this is a miscarriage of justice | :05:13. | :05:14.
and my son has been cheated out of justice because of a mistake. | :05:15. | :05:17.
We have fought all along, me and Nathan, Mason's dad, along with the | :05:18. | :05:20.
family, to try and get some justice for Mason because we believed it was | :05:21. | :05:24.
right, we believe we were right and he was unlawfully killed. | :05:25. | :05:31.
We were treated appallingly and I believe they need to answer that. | :05:32. | :05:42.
The scores on the doors rating system we now | :05:43. | :05:44.
have at food outlets was a direct result of Mason's death. | :05:45. | :05:47.
enquiry made tougher enforcement one of its key recommendations. | :05:48. | :05:50.
Mason's mother says it is a fitting legacy but as the family | :05:51. | :05:53.
see it, his death has not been recorded properly and they continue | :05:54. | :05:56.
An inquest has heard that an army officer had ordered a young soldier | :05:57. | :06:09.
to be brought to him "hot and sweaty" on the day the private died | :06:10. | :06:12.
Gavin Williams, who was 22 and from Hengoed | :06:13. | :06:16.
near Caerphilly, died of heatstroke in July 2006, after being ordered | :06:17. | :06:18.
to carry out intensive exercise as punishment for drunken behaviour. | :06:19. | :06:27.
After two days without water, households in north Pembrokeshire | :06:28. | :06:29.
are slowly being reconnected to the mains supply. | :06:30. | :06:31.
Around 500 properties are still cut off though, with the worst affected | :06:32. | :06:34.
areas around Crymych, Boncath, St Dogmaels, Tegryn and Nevern. | :06:35. | :06:36.
Welsh Water has been distributing bottled water | :06:37. | :06:37.
at three different locations but say they hope all customers will | :06:38. | :06:40.
Four people have been found guilty of conspiring to supply over ?5 | :06:41. | :06:48.
million worth of heroin, one of Wales' largest ever seizures. | :06:49. | :06:50.
Police uncovered more than forty kilograms of the drug as part | :06:51. | :06:53.
of an undercover operation between 2013 and 2014. | :06:54. | :06:55.
Khalid Yassen from Cardiff was found not guilty. | :06:56. | :06:58.
The jury was unable to return a verdict on Umar Butt, | :06:59. | :07:01.
The travel chaos surrounding Rugby World Cup matches in Cardiff was | :07:02. | :07:14.
That's what the organisers told an Assembly inquiry into the | :07:15. | :07:20.
incidents, which left thousands of fans queuing for up to four hours. | :07:21. | :07:23.
Rail bosses insist organisers underestimated the number | :07:24. | :07:25.
I can tell you that the 22nd of September, | :07:26. | :07:36.
we were actually told that we should tell our audience that they should | :07:37. | :07:39.
I can tell you that my response that day was that will we would not do | :07:40. | :07:46.
Let's see what the weekend weather has in store. | :07:47. | :07:57.
Thank you very much. I am sure there were one or two damp sparklers this | :07:58. | :08:10.
evening but thankfully the worst of the rain cleared away. Over the next | :08:11. | :08:14.
few days there is more wet and windy weather to come. Staying on the mild | :08:15. | :08:21.
side for November. For the rest of the night, a few spots of drizzle | :08:22. | :08:26.
but no more than that. Some hill fog and later in the night, the next | :08:27. | :08:30.
arch of rain will reach the far south and west of the country. A | :08:31. | :08:35.
mild night. Tomorrow, this rain spreading across Wales. Some heavy | :08:36. | :08:38.
bursts of rain, especially in the South. The wind picking up again as | :08:39. | :08:45.
well. Across the rest of the UK, rain will move north-east were | :08:46. | :08:47.
during the day. Some heavy bursts of rain accompanied I guess the winds. | :08:48. | :08:53.
It should start to dry and brighten up in western areas during the | :08:54. | :09:00.
afternoon. Some sunshine. Mild tomorrow. 18 degrees in London. | :09:01. | :09:04.
Wales tomorrow afternoon a little rain and is all but it will improve | :09:05. | :09:09.
as time goes on. A little sunshine before sunset. Temperatures above | :09:10. | :09:18.
Sunset. 17 in Flintshire. Tomorrow evening and overnight, the odd | :09:19. | :09:21.
shower in the North. More rain will spread into the South by the end of | :09:22. | :09:26.
the night. We will all see some more rain on Saturday, accompanied by | :09:27. | :09:30.
strong and gusty winds but it should cheer up in the afternoon. Some | :09:31. | :09:34.
sunshine, turning dry around the wind easing. That will take this | :09:35. | :09:39.
into a dry and Qamar evening on Saturday. Good news if you are | :09:40. | :09:44.
heading to a firework display. More wind come on Remembrance Sunday. The | :09:45. | :09:49.
heaviest of the rain on the Snowdonia Mountains. Unsettled into | :09:50. | :09:50.
next week. From all of us on the programme, | :09:51. | :09:53.
good night. | :09:54. | :10:02. |
