of murdering Tracy Woodford Her family say his actions have | :00:57. | :00:59.
haunted their lives ever since. We see the devastation | :01:00. | :01:07.
in each other's eyes and know We know that we are | :01:08. | :01:09.

this morning. We begin with Rebecca John | :02:07. | :02:09.
on what we know so far. Police emerged from the steelworks | :02:10. | :02:15.
this evening to confirm that two people died in an explosion | :02:16. | :02:19.
at the plant this morning. I can confirm that today at | :02:20. | :02:23.
around 10:30am emergency services responded to | :02:24. | :02:27.
reports of an explosion at the Celsa Five persons were injured, | :02:28. | :02:30.

of staff were unaccounted for. Sadly, I can confirm we | :02:41. | :02:46.
have found two bodies. We have informed the families | :02:47. | :02:51.
and we are continuing to support them through this difficult time | :02:52. | :02:54.
with family support officers. The Health and Safety Executive is | :02:55. | :02:59.
currently on scene supporting our initial enquiries and police, | :03:00. | :03:03.
fire and ambulance remain, Our priority at this moment | :03:04. | :03:06.
in time is to recover the victims, support their families and carry | :03:07. | :03:16.

in hospital for minor injuries. A big bang, to be honest with you. | :04:10. | :04:15.
An explosion. We felt the floor move, | :04:16. | :04:23.
it shook beneath our feet. We looked across the back of these | :04:24. | :04:26.
buildings and the rooves of the steelworks had black smoke coming | :04:27. | :04:30.
out of the top of the buildings. Paul Williams runs | :04:31. | :04:37.
a wedding planning business nearby. We heard it straightaway | :04:38. | :04:39.
and we thought, oh, my God, Obviously, with what has been going | :04:40. | :04:45.
on over the last weekend, Jonathan James is | :04:46. | :04:55.
a commercial photographer nearby. All of a sudden, | :04:56. | :05:01.
there was a huge explosion The reflectors we were using moved | :05:02. | :05:03.
and you could see everything... Operations | :05:04. | :05:11.
at the plant have been suspended. Celsa says its thoughts | :05:12. | :05:17.
and deepest sympathies are with those affected and their families | :05:18. | :05:20.
and its utmost priority is to Let's talk through Rob Edwards from | :05:21. | :05:42.
the union. And a counsellor from the community. What's more can you tell | :05:43. | :05:52.
us of what happened? May I start by saying my deepest sympathies to the | :05:53. | :05:55.
families of these two men who've lost their lives. In regards to what | :05:56. | :06:00.
happened today, what I understand, an explosion occurred in the cellars | :06:01. | :06:07.
of the mill and this had tragic circumstances. Do you know anything | :06:08. | :06:12.
more about the structure of where this explosion happened? You talk | :06:13. | :06:18.
about a basement. From what I understand, there is a line that | :06:19. | :06:22.
runs across the floor of the works, in layman 's terms within the | :06:23. | :06:29.
seller, there is an oil accumulator which is an oil vessel which is | :06:30. | :06:34.
under pressure and for whatever reason it's exploded. A huge shock | :06:35. | :06:40.
for the community hair. What can you tell us of the community reaction? | :06:41. | :06:47.
-- the community here. Nobody expects it in the 21st-century. | :06:48. | :06:53.
Steel production has been happening here for 120 years. It is integral | :06:54. | :07:01.
hair. -- integral here. If you do not know this part of Cardiff, this | :07:02. | :07:04.
is hugely important to the community. Huge. There is a sense of | :07:05. | :07:10.
pride in the community that steelworks are still happening. It | :07:11. | :07:16.
employs hundreds of people indirectly, 3000 people rely on this | :07:17. | :07:20.
plan so a significant part of the Cardiff economy and it is a | :07:21. | :07:24.
significant part of the fabric of the divinity. -- community. The | :07:25. | :07:36.
injured were taken from here to the university hospital from where our | :07:37. | :07:42.
reporter joins us. What is the latest? | :07:43. | :07:48.
It's several hours since the apple uses real arrived. -- ambulance. | :07:49. | :07:56.
They were receiving oxygen as they were transported inside. The health | :07:57. | :08:02.
board in charge implemented so-called major incident protocol. | :08:03. | :08:07.
Let's get the latest on the condition of the poor patients | :08:08. | :08:14.
here. -- for macro patients. What's more can you tell us? Of the four | :08:15. | :08:19.
casualties that were transported to the emergency unit to have been | :08:20. | :08:26.
discharged. Two of the patients because the nature of smoke | :08:27. | :08:31.
inhalation remain under observation at the hospital. You originally | :08:32. | :08:37.
implemented the major incident protocol. What is that entail? That | :08:38. | :08:43.
entails is working with the Ambulance Service and the police in | :08:44. | :08:46.
order to ensure that we have capacity to deal with those | :08:47. | :08:50.
casualties from the incident and deal with the workload we normally | :08:51. | :08:54.
deal with. And say the hospital has returned to normal and is fully | :08:55. | :08:59.
functional and I would like to reckon I is the professionalism of | :09:00. | :09:01.
the staff in dealing with the incident. I would like to say thank | :09:02. | :09:07.
you to the health care partners and the public in dealing with the | :09:08. | :09:10.
incident. I am aware there have been to macro fatalities and our thoughts | :09:11. | :09:14.
are with them. -- two macro fatalities. Thank you. We will keep | :09:15. | :09:21.
you up-to-date with the condition of the two patients that remain here at | :09:22. | :09:25.
the university 's hospital. For now, back to you. | :09:26. | :09:29.
People who live and work in Cardiff have been learning | :09:30. | :09:31.
The local MP Stephen Doughty has been giving | :09:32. | :09:38.
This is a dark day in the history of steel-making in Cardiff and my heart | :09:39. | :09:54.
and my prayers go to the family and friends of those affected. Also to | :09:55. | :09:59.
those who have been injured but clearly the deaths of two people is | :10:00. | :10:04.
extraordinary. A deep tragedy for the city. | :10:05. | :10:05.
The noise from the explosion could be heard far across the city and the | :10:06. | :10:08.
On the other side of Cardiff, the First Minister Carwyn Jones told | :10:09. | :10:16.
the Senedd of what had happened and of his concerns for those | :10:17. | :10:20.
There was an explosion in the rolling mill on | :10:21. | :10:27.
The company immediately put their emergency plan into operation. | :10:28. | :10:35.
The site is now in the control of the police | :10:36. | :10:38.
and emergency services and we understand that the Health and | :10:39. | :10:41.
I'm sure all members will join me in expressing our concern and | :10:42. | :10:52.
of course join with me in sharing our thoughts with the | :10:53. | :10:57.
employees and their families at this very worrying and difficult time. | :10:58. | :11:03.
Let's talk to our business correspondent Brian Meechan. | :11:04. | :11:08.
You know this site. You spend time here earlier this year. What goes on | :11:09. | :11:17.
in there? Walking around in this site and seeing the processes and | :11:18. | :11:20.
talking to the workers, two things stand out. First of all, the care | :11:21. | :11:24.
and attention paid to health and safety by the workers at this site | :11:25. | :11:29.
and secondly the reason for that, steel-making in such a day dangerous | :11:30. | :11:36.
process -- dangerous process. Scrap metal is bought from all over and | :11:37. | :11:40.
mixed up and put into a furnace and it comes out as liquid. It goes | :11:41. | :11:43.
through various cooling processes and what they end up with is steel | :11:44. | :11:48.
coil and bars that are used in construction projects like tunnels | :11:49. | :11:56.
and energy projects. The steel industry is very dangerous but | :11:57. | :12:01.
serious accident are unusual. They are. There was an accident last year | :12:02. | :12:08.
here, three workers were treatable by that hospital but to have a loss | :12:09. | :12:12.
of life, two people dead after coming to work, that is extremely | :12:13. | :12:17.
rare. I'm trying to get a sense of what it is like inside. What are | :12:18. | :12:23.
working conditions like? The heat is incredibly intense. There is molten | :12:24. | :12:30.
steel flowing everywhere. The people who work there, 725 people, many | :12:31. | :12:34.
have worked there for many years, they know the processes involved but | :12:35. | :12:40.
also it is that issue of how potentially dangerous dealing with | :12:41. | :12:40.
steel can be. Thank you. For any further developments or | :12:41. | :12:43.
updates on this story, instant information through | :12:44. | :12:45.
the evening on our website. I'll be back with you | :12:46. | :12:51.
in a moment but first the rest of A former butcher has been found | :12:52. | :12:55.
guilty of murdering and dismembering a 47-year-old woman | :12:56. | :13:03.
at his flat in Pontypridd. 50-year-old Christopher May killed | :13:04. | :13:07.
Tracey Woodford in April He then disposed of part | :13:08. | :13:10.
of her body in a drain in the town. These CCTV images show | :13:11. | :13:16.
the last hours of Tracey Woodford's life, leaving the Skinny Dog pub | :13:17. | :13:22.
in Pontypridd with Christopher May. At his flat just round the corner, | :13:23. | :13:28.
he strangled her For more than a week, | :13:29. | :13:30.
her family have sat in the courtroom listening to details | :13:31. | :13:36.
so distressing even police called to The thought and visions of what he | :13:37. | :13:51.
did have wanted us every day for the last seven months and it is | :13:52. | :13:55.
something we will never get over. A mother has nightmares most nights. | :13:56. | :14:00.
Waking up screaming and crying out her name. Asking why would you do | :14:01. | :14:05.
this to her? We see the devastation in each other's eyes and know the | :14:06. | :14:10.
they are feeling. We know we are helpless to stop the pain. He did | :14:11. | :14:13.
not just killed Tracy that night, he killed a part of us all. | :14:14. | :14:16.
50-year-old Christopher May claimed he'd acted in self defence after he | :14:17. | :14:18.
was attacked by Tracey, who he said he caught stealing from his wallet. | :14:19. | :14:23.
It was all a lie, said the prosectuion, to hide what | :14:24. | :14:25.
was a brutal, sexually motivated murder of a fragile women. | :14:26. | :14:31.
It was when she failed to return home to her family that police | :14:32. | :14:34.
When officers went to May's flat, at first he told them that he and | :14:35. | :14:41.
Tracey had parted company soon after leaving the pub, but, when officers | :14:42. | :14:45.
searched the flat, they discovered some of her remains in the shower. | :14:46. | :14:50.
He told them later they could find more remains in this storm drain | :14:51. | :14:53.
A major police search was begun in the scrubland around the club | :14:54. | :15:00.
He had shown no remorse for his actions of murder, mutilation and | :15:01. | :15:15.
dismemberment. After which traces family and friends enjoyed further | :15:16. | :15:16.
anguish and torment at the trial. At times, the family said | :15:17. | :15:21.
afterwards, listening to the detail was too much to bear, | :15:22. | :15:22.
but they did it for Tracey. It took the jury less than an hour | :15:23. | :15:34.
to reach their verdict. When it came, some of the family broke down. | :15:35. | :15:37.
The judge thanked them for their dignity throughout the case and told | :15:38. | :15:41.
may he would be sentenced on Friday. The jury has been discharged | :15:42. | :15:43.
in the manslaughter trial of a landlord from Prestatyn who | :15:44. | :15:45.
owned a property where a family Jay Liptrot pleaded guilty to | :15:46. | :15:48.

people from fire. The prosecution say they accepted | :15:55. | :15:57.
the plea after consulting Jay Liptrot, seen here at | :15:58. | :16:01.
an earlier hearing, was praised for his leadership as one of the first | :16:02. | :16:08.

blaze at one of his 11 properties. The fire had been started | :16:13. | :16:17.
deliberately by Melanie Smith, who lived in the flat downstairs, | :16:18. | :16:20.
after a long-running dispute with Lee Anna Shiers, her partner | :16:21. | :16:22.
Liam Timbrell, their 15-month-old son Charlie and Miss Shiers's | :16:23. | :16:27.
4-year-old nephew Bailey and 2-year-old niece Skye all died after | :16:28. | :16:31.
being trapped in the building. Melanie Smith was jailed | :16:32. | :16:36.
for a minium of 30 years. The court heard yesterday | :16:37. | :16:39.
at the start of Mr Liptrot's manslaughter trial that he had | :16:40. | :16:41.
failed to install a fire door which would have bought the victims | :16:42. | :16:44.
valuable minutes of safety Today, though, the jury was | :16:45. | :16:46.
discharged when the prosecution accepted Mr Liptrot's gulity plea | :16:47. | :16:51.
to the lesser count of failing to take precautions which exposed | :16:52. | :16:54.
people to risk of death from fire. It came following discussions with | :16:55. | :16:59.

Warburton has said that Lomu was the A true legend of rugby | :17:58. | :18:02.
and an adopted Welshman. On Max Boyce's sofa warming up to | :18:03. | :18:12.
the Rugby World Cup just a few months ago Jonah Lomu spoke | :18:13. | :18:15.
of his love for Wales. The welcome that | :18:16. | :18:20.
the Welsh give me every time I come here is phenomenal and, for myself, | :18:21. | :18:23.
I call it a home away from home Bringing my two sons over | :18:24. | :18:27.
and trying to explain to them, From the age of 14, Jonah Lomu was | :18:28. | :18:35.
managed by Phil Kingsley Jones. The New Zealander grew very close | :18:36. | :18:46.
to the Welsh family and was like a brother to Phil's son, the current | :18:47. | :18:49.
Newport Gwent Dragons head coach. He was very much part | :18:50. | :18:54.
of the family for a long time and my father's relationship with | :18:55. | :18:57.
him was like father and son, so it's hit me that I won't meet | :18:58. | :19:01.
Jonah again and it is a sad day He was a great guy | :19:02. | :19:07.
and will be sadly missed. The destructive 18-stone winger | :19:08. | :19:14.
burst onto the international scene in 1995, | :19:15. | :19:16.
terrorising the English defence, scoring four tries during the World | :19:17. | :19:20.
Cup semifinal in South Africa. He opened the game up to non-rugby | :19:21. | :19:25.
supporters but, on the field, he was just a phenomenal player, | :19:26. | :19:30.
like nothing we'd ever seen before Lomu, | :19:31. | :19:33.
who scored 37 tries in 64 matches for New Zealand, was diagnosed with | :19:34. | :19:39.
a rare and serious kidney disorder. Lomu bounced back and was snapped | :19:40. | :19:44.
up by the Cardiff Blues. In a man of the match performance, | :19:45. | :19:53.
he scored his first try for From the moment that Jonah Lomu | :19:54. | :19:56.
arrived here, Not only his size | :19:57. | :20:05.
and his presence but everything he did, the way he conducted himself, | :20:06. | :20:12.
he was so inspirational. With players in the dressing room, | :20:13. | :20:16.
on the field. The very first game he had here, | :20:17. | :20:21.
the sold out signs went up That has never been achieved | :20:22. | :20:25.

weather is this low pressure tracking across Scotland, | :21:10. | :21:15.
with a cold front moving south east So a very blustery evening | :21:16. | :21:20.
with gale-force gusts. The wind slowly easing with lowest | :21:21. | :21:23.
temperatures between 8 Tomorrow's chart shows | :21:24. | :21:28.
a wriggly weather front lying close to the south coast of England | :21:29. | :21:34.
bringing rain to southern counties. There is a risk of rain at times | :21:35. | :21:37.
in the south. The best of the weather | :21:38. | :21:43.
in the north. Temperatures lower than today, 9 to | :21:44. | :21:47.
12 Celsius, but the wind lighter. Tomorrow evening and overnight, a | :21:48. | :21:50.
risk of further rain in the south. The north dry and a slightly | :21:51. | :21:54.
colder night with lighter winds. On Friday, | :21:55. | :21:58.
the wind will turn to the north west Some sunshine but a few showers | :21:59. | :22:02.
as well. Things turning wintry | :22:03. | :22:07.
on high ground in the north. Maybe a little snow on the Berwyn | :22:08. | :22:09.
mountains. Cold Arctic winds will sweep across | :22:10. | :22:12.
the whole of the UK by the end of the week and that means we are going | :22:13. | :22:18.
to see a big drop in temperature. Instead of 15 Celsius, 6 will be | :22:19. | :22:23.
nearer the mark over the weekend. Friday night into Saturday, | :22:24. | :22:28.
cold and windy. Most of the showers in the north | :22:29. | :22:35.
and west, falling as snow on higher ground and | :22:36. | :22:44.
feeling very cold in the wind, so Thank, Derek. | :22:45. | :22:48.
That's it from me. Let's return to Jamie now who's | :22:49. | :22:56.
outside the Celsa steelworks An explosion in the heart of Cardiff | :22:57. | :22:59.
at Celsa steelworks. Two people have died, | :23:00. | :23:11.
five were injured. Of those, | :23:12. | :23:13.
two casualties are being treated Emergency services mounted | :23:14. | :23:15.
their serious incident response. The police and the Health and Safety | :23:16. | :23:21.
Executive are already investigating what happened here at 10:30 | :23:22. | :23:25.
this morning. Vaughan Gething is | :23:26. | :23:29.
the local Assembly Member. No, what is in the public domain is | :23:30. | :23:44.
a limit of what we know and what we should know because the first point | :23:45. | :23:47.
is we want to send our thoughts to the families of the deceased and | :23:48. | :23:50.
those four people treated at the hospital. It is such a huge issue | :23:51. | :23:55.
because steel-making hazarded big footprint in today's Cardiff but | :23:56. | :24:00.
also the history of steel-making means that our extra families who | :24:01. | :24:03.
will be directly affected by what has happened today. In my surprise | :24:04. | :24:09.
people watching on Anglesey or west Wales at Cardiff as a steelworks in | :24:10. | :24:14.
the middle of the city. There are thousands of retired steel workers | :24:15. | :24:16.
and their families who will be watching today's news with real | :24:17. | :24:22.
trepidation and loss. This site had a good safety record so the fact | :24:23. | :24:25.
that two people will not be going home after work today will have a | :24:26. | :24:30.
real impact in the broader community. A devastating loss for | :24:31. | :24:34.
the families. Have you spoken to the management here? We have been in | :24:35. | :24:38.
touch with them through the day. I'll be in touch with them through | :24:39. | :24:41.
the week to understand what has happened and what support I can | :24:42. | :24:45.
offer as a representative by one steel-making to a future in Wales | :24:46. | :24:50.
with a safe future so that is important to understand what | :24:51. | :24:55.
happened today. This is your constituency, the feeling from the | :24:56. | :24:59.
community after today? A very real sense of loss and it is hard to | :25:00. | :25:02.
overstate just how upset people are about it. The fact that it is not | :25:03. | :25:07.
just people who've lost their lives, their workmates will be coming to | :25:08. | :25:12.
work in the future and how it will affect them. A really tragic day for | :25:13. | :25:16.
the workforce here and the wider community across Cardiff. Thank you. | :25:17. | :25:19.
Let me take you over to the hospital now, where the | :25:20. | :25:22.
Steffan Messenger is at University Hospital of Wales | :25:23. | :25:31.
Two of the four casualties brought here to the university hospital of | :25:32. | :25:45.
Wales remain in the care of trauma teams. We are told they have minor | :25:46. | :25:49.
injuries. Two other patients have been discharged. The hospital stood | :25:50. | :25:55.
down major incident protocol that has been in place earlier today. The | :25:56. | :25:59.
health board has thanked all the staff involved in the care of these | :26:00. | :26:03.
tragedies. They say the care has been professional and efficient. | :26:04. | :26:07.
They also sent their condolences to all those affected by today's tragic | :26:08. | :26:10.
events at the steelworks. Our reporter Rebecca John | :26:11. | :26:17.
has been here all day. Within the last hour, it's emerged | :26:18. | :26:32.
that two people have been discharged in hospital but the worst news was | :26:33. | :26:36.
announced here confirmed by police fire and ambulance just over an hour | :26:37. | :26:40.
ago. They emerge from the site to confirm that two people lost their | :26:41. | :26:45.
lives in work here this morning. The company has extended its deepest | :26:46. | :26:48.
sympathies, it's thoughts are with those affected and their families | :26:49. | :26:52.
and said its utmost priority is to support all those who have been | :26:53. | :26:59.
affected. A terrible day. A major incident. We saw rows of ambulances | :27:00. | :27:04.
and Fire Services and the worst news was confirmed within the last hour. | :27:05. | :27:06.
Thank you. Tonight, the ambulances | :27:07. | :27:09.
and helicopter have left. The police and health | :27:10. | :27:11.
and safety investigators are already beginning their painstaking work, | :27:12. | :27:14.
piecing together exactly what when | :27:15. | :27:18.
an explosion ripped through Celsa We'll have an update at 8pm | :27:19. | :27:24.
and after the BBC News at Ten. That's Wales Today. | :27:25. | :27:42.
Thank you for watching. From all of us on the programme, | :27:43. | :27:44.
good evening. | :27:45. | :27:49. |
