Good evening. | 0:00:13 | 0:00:13
Office for National Statistics staff in Newport are anxious that | 0:00:13 | 0:00:17
a government review will lead to jobs leaving South Wales. | 0:00:17 | 0:00:20
That's according to the union which represents them. | 0:00:20 | 0:00:23
Sir Charlie Bean, who's in charge of the review, will publish | 0:00:23 | 0:00:26
his initial findings next week. | 0:00:26 | 0:00:29
We were caught in a blizzard of stats this week as the Chancellor | 0:00:29 | 0:00:33
delivered his spending review, showering us all with fractions, | 0:00:33 | 0:00:36
percentages and decimals. | 0:00:36 | 0:00:39
But just how reliable is this type of data? | 0:00:39 | 0:00:42
It's not just the comfort people are choosing but the look as well. | 0:00:42 | 0:00:46
At George Osborne's request, that's the question this man is | 0:00:46 | 0:00:49
trying to put to bed. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:52
Sir Charlie Bean began his review into the production of | 0:00:52 | 0:00:55
UK statistics nearly four months ago. | 0:00:55 | 0:00:58
As the UK's primary source of economic data Sir Charlie's review | 0:00:58 | 0:01:01
will focus on the Office of National Statistics and its Newport base. | 0:01:01 | 0:01:04
This is where two thirds of the organisation's staff have been | 0:01:04 | 0:01:07
based since for the past few years since a relocation programme | 0:01:07 | 0:01:11
carried out and so there's a degree of concern here now | 0:01:11 | 0:01:16
for the future. | 0:01:16 | 0:01:19
There is some anxiety obviously. | 0:01:19 | 0:01:22
We have 2,000 people working here at Newport ONS, | 0:01:22 | 0:01:24
600 working directly on economic statistics. | 0:01:24 | 0:01:27
That's what Charlie Bean's review is looking at. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:31
We would strongly oppose any proposal to transfer work | 0:01:31 | 0:01:34
or jobs from Newport. | 0:01:34 | 0:01:37
In recent times the ONS has been criticised | 0:01:37 | 0:01:39
for the quality of its work and some have questioned the decision to take | 0:01:39 | 0:01:43
so many workers out of London. | 0:01:43 | 0:01:46
There has been a continuous barrage of criticism of the ONS in Newport | 0:01:46 | 0:01:51
since it first came, especially from the establishment | 0:01:51 | 0:01:54
of statisticians in London who wanted everything | 0:01:54 | 0:01:57
in the capital city. | 0:01:57 | 0:02:00
Sir Charlie Bean has previously suggested he thinks the ONS' | 0:02:00 | 0:02:04
performance has deteriorated and the relocation to Newport | 0:02:04 | 0:02:07
came at a cost, one that can't be recovered by simply | 0:02:07 | 0:02:11
moving everyone back to London. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:13
And though he will look at expanding the London-based team | 0:02:13 | 0:02:17
he's also said Newport could become a hotspot of statistical expertise. | 0:02:17 | 0:02:24
Meanwhile, the ONS told us it | 0:02:24 | 0:02:26
"welcomed the Bean review as an opportunity | 0:02:26 | 0:02:28
"to review systems and processes for measuring the changing economy" | 0:02:28 | 0:02:32
and the organisation "looks forward to reading the interim report | 0:02:32 | 0:02:35
"when it's published on Wednesday." | 0:02:35 | 0:02:40
And you can hear more on that story on Sunday Politics | 0:02:40 | 0:02:43
Wales, tomorrow morning at 11 o'clock on BBC One Wales. | 0:02:43 | 0:02:48

make the case for air strikes. | 0:02:55 | 0:02:56

a comprehensive plan which is backed fully by the UN. | 0:03:05 | 0:03:10
For the first time today, members of the public have been | 0:03:10 | 0:03:12
allowed in to the new ?50 million arts centre in Bangor. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:16
Pontio, which also houses the University's students' union, | 0:03:16 | 0:03:19
was due to open its doors over a year ago but has been blighted | 0:03:19 | 0:03:23
by delays and rising costs. | 0:03:23 | 0:03:27
Once we feel people are coming in here and taking ownership of the | 0:03:27 | 0:03:31
place for themselves, they find something relevant to them here. | 0:03:31 | 0:03:35
The cinema is back in Bangor at last. Hallelujah! | 0:03:35 | 0:03:39
That is something we're all looking forward to, | 0:03:39 | 0:03:42
and Theatr Bryn Terfel of course will open its doors next week. | 0:03:42 | 0:03:46
So something for everybody, I hope. | 0:03:46 | 0:03:48
