Television advertising of sugary and fatty foods should be banned

That's the call from the Welsh Health Minister

Mark Drakeford says young people already consume three times

the recommended amounts of fizzy drinks and confectionary and he

believes a co-ordinated approach is needed to tackle obesity.

in the decades before obesity became an issue.

what a poor diet of sugary and salty food can mean for long-term health.

That's why the Health Minister here wants to

see TV adverts targeted at children banned before the 9pm watershed.

Our children ought not to be exposed routinely to adverts that press on

them food and drink which can only be harmful to their health in the

future. There is ample evidence of the way children are heavily

influenced by things that are deliberately pushed at them through

advertising. And that's a stance supported

In response the UK Government's Public Health Minister, Jane Ellison

said they were committed to turning the tide on childhood obesity.

They say they're developing a comprehensive strategy looking

at all the factors that contribute to a child obesity, including sugar

consumption, and say a report will be published in the coming months.

North Wales Police spent ?560,000 over two years for a mobile phone

on supporting people from disadvantaged backgrounds or areas.

You could decide to spread the resource equally and relatively

thinly, or you could say, let's focus it on the areas of most need,

so those people that come from disadvantaged backgrounds or areas

which need more support such as expensive subjects. Means testing

would mean those students who really need support would get support,

those who are more able to support themselves would be able to do that

and that is surely fair. It's a system we have now for maintenance

grants. In response, the Welsh Government

says the system, which is being reviewed at the moment, is an

investment in young people and means students from Wales leave University
