Welcome to Wales Today. Our top stories: | :00:00. | :00:00.
Jail for the gang who conspired to supply heroin - | :00:00. | :00:00.
there are more seizures of the drug here | :00:00. | :00:07.
And they abandoned five children and led a secret life, | :00:08. | :00:14.
but did Leigh Ann Sabine kill her husband and hide his body? | :00:15. | :00:18.
Tonight, police probe their finances. | :00:19. | :00:35.
Two heroin gang leaders and eight others, | :00:36. | :00:38.
described as the most serious criminals ever seen in Wales, | :00:39. | :00:41.
have been sentenced to a total of nearly 100 years in prison. | :00:42. | :00:46.
It comes as official figures show there have been more heroin seizures | :00:47. | :00:50.
across the South Wales force area recently | :00:51. | :00:53.
at the start of Jordan Davies' report. | :00:54. | :01:01.
This is the moment undercover police had been working towards for months. | :01:02. | :01:05.
The car in front had been followed across the Welsh border onto the M5. | :01:06. | :01:10.
What was found inside surprised even the most hardened officers - | :01:11. | :01:14.
the largest single seizure ever made by officers from South Wales, | :01:15. | :01:21.
hidden inside this speaker and a suitcase. | :01:22. | :01:24.
The total street value of the drugs seized, | :01:25. | :01:26.
The officer in charge of the case | :01:27. | :01:31.
says this one operation has had a huge knock-on effect. | :01:32. | :01:34.
It's the largest in Wales that's ever been seized. | :01:35. | :01:37.
that's got a street value of about ?5 million. | :01:38. | :01:41.
into individual deals, individual doses, | :01:42. | :01:44.
that is nearly half a million street deals. | :01:45. | :01:48.
Today, ten people were sentenced to a total of nearly 100 years | :01:49. | :01:51.
in prison for their part in this conspiracy. | :01:52. | :01:54.
They were led by two men, Imtiaz Ali from Newport | :01:55. | :02:00.
described as experienced, convicted dealers. | :02:01. | :02:05.
Heroin remains an issue in South Wales. | :02:06. | :02:07.
Official figures show there were more seizures | :02:08. | :02:10.
across the South Wales force area than any other area | :02:11. | :02:13.
in Wales and England outside London | :02:14. | :02:16.
Last year, the force made 303 seizures | :02:17. | :02:24.
for every 1 million people living in the area. | :02:25. | :02:29.
That's more than double the average for Wales and England. | :02:30. | :02:32.
South Wales Police says this is down to the work | :02:33. | :02:34.
of the Organised Crime Unit in the area | :02:35. | :02:36.
prioritising crime groups and drugs trafficking. | :02:37. | :02:39.
We have been given access to an officer | :02:40. | :02:42.
at the heart of the fight against organised crime. | :02:43. | :02:45.
He led the undercover team on this case. | :02:46. | :02:46.
We can't identify him because of his work, | :02:47. | :02:49.
but he has been part of some of the most sensitive investigations | :02:50. | :02:52.
He says organised crime groups here | :02:53. | :02:57.
They are, as I say, keeping track with modern-day technology, | :02:58. | :03:04.
which shows the level of commitment that we must make, | :03:05. | :03:09.
both in the background to keep parallel with them, | :03:10. | :03:12.
and to find ways of overcoming this and attacking them | :03:13. | :03:16.
said these were industrial quantities of heroin. | :03:17. | :03:24.
But figures suggest the fight against heroin in South Wales | :03:25. | :03:30.
is far from over and, as one crime group is sentenced, | :03:31. | :03:34.
another is willing to take its place. | :03:35. | :03:38.
A man in his 80s has died following a house fire | :03:39. | :03:41.
The emergency services were called to the property in Saron | :03:42. | :03:45.
North Wales Fire Service and North Wales Police | :03:46. | :03:50.
have launched a joint investigation into the cause of the blaze. | :03:51. | :03:56.
at the centre of a murder investigation in Rhondda Cynon Taff | :03:57. | :04:01.
say they're now looking into their past finances. | :04:02. | :04:04.
The remains of John Sabine were found wrapped in plastic | :04:05. | :04:08.
in the garden of a flat in Beddau earlier this month. | :04:09. | :04:11.
His late wife, Leigh Ann, is the prime suspect. | :04:12. | :04:14.
It's also emerged that the couple were investigated in New Zealand | :04:15. | :04:18.
for abandoning their five children and changing their identities. | :04:19. | :04:22.
Welsh police have discovered the body of a man wrapped in plastic | :04:23. | :04:28.
who they believe was buried in the garden nearly 20 years ago. | :04:29. | :04:33.
It is an extraordinary story now leading the news | :04:34. | :04:36.
A tumultuous family history, this old footage | :04:37. | :04:42.
shows the couple's two daughters confronting them, | :04:43. | :04:45.
demanding answers as to why they disappeared. | :04:46. | :04:49.
By 1997, the couple had moved to Beddau. | :04:50. | :04:57.
That same year, it is now thought, John Sabine vanished. | :04:58. | :05:01.
Last month, after Leigh Ann died from cancer, his remains were found | :05:02. | :05:07.
wrapped in plastic in the back garden of their flat. | :05:08. | :05:10.
Within weeks, police had named her | :05:11. | :05:12.
But this story really began in the late '60s, | :05:13. | :05:19.
when the couple abandoned their five children in New Zealand, | :05:20. | :05:23.
and moved to Australia, changing their names. | :05:24. | :05:26.
In the '80s, they returned to New Zealand | :05:27. | :05:28.
and, at that time, their sons welcomed them back. | :05:29. | :05:32.
The good thing is that you're living with your parents, | :05:33. | :05:35.
not relying on foster parents or anything. | :05:36. | :05:38.
They never really treated you the same | :05:39. | :05:40.
I was just coming through a rough patch and I was just coming right, | :05:41. | :05:47.
and since I met my parents, everything has just gone great. | :05:48. | :05:51.
But daughters Jane and Leanne were frustrated. | :05:52. | :05:54.
their parents left again, this time for Britain. | :05:55. | :06:03.
They didn't want us from the start, did they? | :06:04. | :06:05.
I mean, I feel I've never had a real sense of belonging. | :06:06. | :06:10.
is reported as saying he now regards his mother as evil. | :06:11. | :06:14.
He would like to come to his father's funeral | :06:15. | :06:16.
Meanwhile, detectives are looking at the couple's finances | :06:17. | :06:22.
and want to hear from anyone who knew them in the late '90s. | :06:23. | :06:26.
Pembrokeshire Council's planning committee have turned down | :06:27. | :06:29.
an application to use waste from the oil industry | :06:30. | :06:32.
Barcud Energy wanted to develop a plant in Pembroke Dock | :06:33. | :06:37.
The application was recommended for reviews all on the basis that the | :06:38. | :06:53.
site is in a flood so and could have an impact on the nearby waterway. | :06:54. | :06:54.
Three of Wales' police forces have been told they must do more | :06:55. | :06:57.
to protect and support domestic abuse victims, | :06:58. | :06:59.
Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary says Gwent Police | :07:00. | :07:02.
had a consistently good response to victims, | :07:03. | :07:04.
but South Wales, Dyfed-Powys and North Wales forces | :07:05. | :07:06.
All four forces say they made changes since the inspection. | :07:07. | :07:14.
Ten refugees from Syria have arrived in Aberystwyth | :07:15. | :07:17.
as part of the first group to be welcomed in Wales. | :07:18. | :07:20.
Ceredigion Council have confirmed they arrived at the end of last week | :07:21. | :07:24.
and are being housed in private rented accommodation. | :07:25. | :07:27.
The UK government is giving all refugees | :07:28. | :07:29.
The First Minister, Carwyn Jones, and the UKIP Leader, Nigel Farage, | :07:30. | :07:37.
will take part in a head-to-head debate | :07:38. | :07:38.
on the UK's membership of the European Union. | :07:39. | :07:41.
The event next month is being organised | :07:42. | :07:44.
by the Institute of Welsh Affairs think tank. | :07:45. | :07:47.
Cardiff City have beaten Brentford 3-2 at home. | :07:48. | :07:53.
Kenwyne Jones scored in stoppage time | :07:54. | :07:55.
Let's see what the weather has in store. | :07:56. | :08:01.
It is a very mild December night. These other temperatures, between | :08:02. | :08:13.
ten and 14 Celsius. Not dropping very much as we go into the | :08:14. | :08:16.
overnight period. Tomorrow stays mild and we do have some patchy | :08:17. | :08:20.
rain. All thanks to this mild air that is being dragged in from the | :08:21. | :08:25.
Azores. It will hang around into the weekend. Tonight, we have a weather | :08:26. | :08:28.
system bringing some rain with it which is pushing north eastwards. If | :08:29. | :08:32.
that was not enough, we have strong winds gusting up to 50 or 60 miles | :08:33. | :08:39.
by our to the West, in exposed areas and hills. Temperatures not dropping | :08:40. | :08:44.
below double figures. The winds will is tomorrow as we go into the | :08:45. | :08:48.
afternoon. First thing tomorrow morning, we do have strong winds and | :08:49. | :08:52.
some rain that will clear through, and which will turn more patchy. | :08:53. | :08:59.
There are some hints of brightness as we go through the day. For the | :09:00. | :09:03.
rest of the British Isles, we have the mild air spreading into Scotland | :09:04. | :09:10.
finally through tomorrow. Most of us enjoy double-figure temperatures | :09:11. | :09:12.
between ten and 14 Celsius. Some hints of brightness coming through | :09:13. | :09:16.
for most of us, especially further east. Here in Wales tomorrow | :09:17. | :09:19.
afternoon, the best of the brightness along the North Coast, | :09:20. | :09:25.
north-eastern parts of powers. Tebbit is between 12 and 14 Celsius. | :09:26. | :09:30.
Tomorrow, a brief band of rain that will clear through, becoming dry | :09:31. | :09:33.
pretty quickly. By early hours of Thursday morning, a cold weather | :09:34. | :09:36.
front will bring more rain with it. This rain band spills eastwards | :09:37. | :09:41.
through Thursday. Another mild day. It will push through pretty quickly | :09:42. | :09:44.
and it will be rather blustery as well. The main thing I've settled | :09:45. | :09:51.
but mild. -- the web of remaining unsettled but mild. | :09:52. | :09:52.
