Over in the US and Almighty battle is under way between Apple and the

:00:00.:00:00.

authorities. Big business versus big government. It's all about unlocking

:00:07.:00:10.

an iPhone belonging to killers. Whose side are you on? John

:00:11.:00:18.

Welcome to the programme. Tonight's headlines.

:00:19.:00:19.

Reducing the risk of dementia, the campaign encouraging us

:00:20.:00:21.

all to adopt a healthy lifestyle, as a survey shows it's the illness

:00:22.:00:25.

And a last run out for France in Cardiff before tomorrow's

:00:26.:00:29.

Six Nations game but Wales coach Warren Gatland says their opponents

:00:30.:00:31.

Three quarters of people in Wales are worried about getting dementia.

:00:32.:00:53.

But a new survey says almost half of us are not sure if you

:00:54.:00:57.

Today the Welsh Government launched a campaign calling on us all to take

:00:58.:01:01.

steps to try and reduce the risk for ourselves.

:01:02.:01:04.

A fit body, hopefully a fit mind later on in life.

:01:05.:01:10.

Here at Penydarren Park in Merthyr Tydfil, Chris shows me

:01:11.:01:13.

After 30 years of doing no exercise, he has just taken up the sport

:01:14.:01:21.

because he believes it will help ward off dementia, something that's

:01:22.:01:24.

I had a friend, or a cousin, who has been stricken by dementia

:01:25.:01:31.

He has got two young dependent children and I realised that

:01:32.:01:38.

hopefully, by taking up a healthy lifestyle, healthy body,

:01:39.:01:42.

healthy mind and hopefully going into old age with

:01:43.:01:45.

According to the Welsh Government, getting dementia is now

:01:46.:01:51.

And a survey of 1,000 people showed almost half of us don't know you can

:01:52.:01:58.

Three quarters of us, they say, don't know where to begin with that.

:01:59.:02:05.

In Caerphilly, these men took part in a 35 year health study

:02:06.:02:11.

and the medical experts say what they found here has

:02:12.:02:15.

To some extent, we have it, there is a genetic element,

:02:16.:02:20.

but to a large extent, it is how we live.

:02:21.:02:23.

And so if we can adopt a healthy lifestyle,

:02:24.:02:26.

just in the same way that it may benefit our heart,

:02:27.:02:28.

what affects the heart affects the head, so it will also

:02:29.:02:32.

But Mary Christine, who has been living with dementia for several

:02:33.:02:36.

She and husband Graham told me that by claiming lifestyle is a factor,

:02:37.:02:42.

the government is turning attention away from the need for more

:02:43.:02:46.

You have got to live your life, you've got to enjoy it,

:02:47.:02:51.

you've got to have fun, you've got to do whatever you can.

:02:52.:02:55.

We joke about Alzheimer's in this house.

:02:56.:02:59.

The Alzheimer's Society says currently, only four in ten people

:03:00.:03:11.

with the condition in Wales get a diagnosis, the lowest in the UK.

:03:12.:03:16.

Last year, the Welsh Government put an extra ?5.5 million

:03:17.:03:19.

into support services and set up diagnosis targets.

:03:20.:03:23.

It is one thing to diagnose but you have got to be able to show

:03:24.:03:27.

people that once you have had a diagnosis that it leads

:03:28.:03:30.

So our teams of people going into care homes push up

:03:31.:03:34.

the rates of diagnosis but also make sure that people who work in those

:03:35.:03:38.

care homes have practical things they can do to help people

:03:39.:03:43.

live longer and live better with dementia.

:03:44.:03:46.

The government message is simple, stay fit and thin, don't smoke

:03:47.:03:50.

or drink, watch your health and try new things.

:03:51.:03:54.

Chris takes the view it is worth a punt.

:03:55.:03:56.

And anyway, he says he is having fun.

:03:57.:04:00.

Councillors in Pembrokeshire have decided to begin a fourth

:04:01.:04:03.

consultation into the controversial reorganisation of secondary

:04:04.:04:07.

It follows a long dispute over the future of education in the town

:04:08.:04:12.

which would see Tasker Milward and Sir Thomas Picton schools shut.

:04:13.:04:16.

The council plan to build a new school on a different site

:04:17.:04:19.

with sixth form education provided by Pembrokeshire college.

:04:20.:04:26.

A competitor has emerged to challenge the company behind

:04:27.:04:29.

the ?1 billion tidal project for Swansea Bay.

:04:30.:04:32.

Tidal Lagoon Power wants to be the first to generate electricity

:04:33.:04:36.

from a tidal lagoon starting in Swansea.

:04:37.:04:39.

Now Ecotricity, which already generates electricity with wind

:04:40.:04:43.

turbines and solar parks, says it can do it for a lot less money.

:04:44.:04:49.

Swansea Council says it has to re-organise its music service

:04:50.:04:52.

Earlier this evening around 200 protestors gathered outside

:04:53.:04:58.

the city's Guild Hall urging the authority not to cut its subsidy

:04:59.:05:02.

to West Glamorgan Youth Music which is run jointly

:05:03.:05:05.

Concerns have been raised that re-organisation could mean a poorer

:05:06.:05:10.

There were plenty of familiar tunes on the steps of the Guildhall this

:05:11.:05:17.

evening but this lot were not there to entertain.

:05:18.:05:20.

West Glamorgan Youth Music is funded as a partnership

:05:21.:05:23.

between Swansea Council and Neath Port Talbot Council.

:05:24.:05:26.

Earlier this month, Neath Port Talbot opted not

:05:27.:05:28.

to cut its subsidy to the service but this evening Swansea councillors

:05:29.:05:32.

were told of a proposal to reduce funding for music tuition in schools

:05:33.:05:35.

These protesters are concerned that without

:05:36.:05:40.

the continuation of free tuition in schools it won't be possible

:05:41.:05:43.

to produce the same level of musical talent.

:05:44.:05:46.

The council says reform is necessary in order to make

:05:47.:05:49.

If you want people to achieve things like grade eight

:05:50.:05:54.

by the time they are 16 or 17 you don't get that starting

:05:55.:05:58.

It needs to be grounding right at the beginning in primary school.

:05:59.:06:07.

This music service has provided a platform for some of Wales's

:06:08.:06:10.

Hoping to join our musical greats in future is Katie Hier,

:06:11.:06:15.

a pupil at Pontarddulais Comrehensive School.

:06:16.:06:18.

A member of the West Glamorgan youth Orchestra,

:06:19.:06:20.

she told me she is worried others won't take as much interest in music

:06:21.:06:24.

if the current provision of tuition is lost.

:06:25.:06:27.

Children won't have the interest and they won't want to

:06:28.:06:30.

have a private tutor, they will not do it.

:06:31.:06:33.

Some people will be able to afford the music programme.

:06:34.:06:38.

We have to pay in school now but it is

:06:39.:06:42.

still like a really reduced price, it is shared among all children.

:06:43.:06:47.

With enough instruments in hand, the crowd of protesters seemed

:06:48.:06:50.

to draw the attention of Swansea Council's leader.

:06:51.:06:53.

He reassured them the music service will continue but reform

:06:54.:06:55.

Earlier today, he told me the current level of funding

:06:56.:07:00.

for school tuition doesn't make good business sense

:07:01.:07:02.

I don't think either council is saying

:07:03.:07:06.

at the moment things can continue as they are because we are aware

:07:07.:07:10.

the cost of the service which is around ?31 an hour

:07:11.:07:13.

is likely to increase because schools are able to procure

:07:14.:07:17.

music services far cheaper than that.

:07:18.:07:21.

What we need to do is make sure that the excellent service we have

:07:22.:07:25.

got is competitive and therefore that schools will want to take that

:07:26.:07:28.

service and parents will want to take that service.

:07:29.:07:30.

The joint running of the music service

:07:31.:07:31.

between Swansea and Neath Port Talbot Councils remains under

:07:32.:07:34.

As Swansea Council make the assurances

:07:35.:07:38.

the music service will continue campaigners hope the funding

:07:39.:07:41.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission says it will not now

:07:42.:07:48.

investigate the death of a dog that was deliberately run over

:07:49.:07:51.

The force had referred itself to the IPCC following

:07:52.:07:55.

the incident on the A55 near Penmaenmawr on Monday.

:07:56.:08:00.

Its commissioner says the force should carry

:08:01.:08:03.

out its own investigation with input from the RSPCA

:08:04.:08:05.

A number of residents at a care home in Colwyn Bay have fallen ill

:08:06.:08:12.

One patient at the Eithinog Home has tested positive for the H1N1 virus,

:08:13.:08:19.

and a further five have been taken to hospital with

:08:20.:08:22.

Public Health Wales says it's working to stop

:08:23.:08:26.

The Wales forwards coach Robin McBryde says Six Nations games

:08:27.:08:34.

held on Friday nights aren't ideal for fans but says there's nothing

:08:35.:08:39.

It comes after calls from the WRU for other nations to share

:08:40.:08:43.

the number of Friday night games in future.

:08:44.:08:45.

Well, Wales have had their final training session ahead of the game

:08:46.:08:49.

They were playful and relaxed this morning.

:08:50.:08:56.

The squad has been given a clean bill of health but Liam Williams

:08:57.:08:59.

was wearing a scrum cap to protect a cut on his head.

:09:00.:09:02.

With the roof closed it promises to be

:09:03.:09:04.

another electric atmosphere but Friday night games aren't

:09:05.:09:06.

An additional 74,000 fans travelling into the city on top

:09:07.:09:13.

of the usual rush hour traffic means just getting to the game

:09:14.:09:17.

It'll be the competition's sixth game on a Friday,

:09:18.:09:22.

We've come across these Friday night games in the past.

:09:23.:09:26.

Players are getting more accustomed to dealing with

:09:27.:09:28.

It isn't ideal for the supporters but that isn't down to us.

:09:29.:09:35.

France arrive tonight at the stadium having won their opening two games

:09:36.:09:39.

in Paris against Italy and Ireland.

:09:40.:09:42.

But neither will be as difficult as playing away from home.

:09:43.:09:45.

They have won just three of their last 12 away games.

:09:46.:09:49.

Take one game at a time and see what works well for them

:09:50.:09:54.

and what they need to improve on, they have done that in the first

:09:55.:09:58.

Under Guy Noves, he comes with credibility in terms

:09:59.:10:02.

He has been incredibly successful for Toulouse.

:10:03.:10:07.

In just over 24 hours Warren Gatland's team will step out

:10:08.:10:13.

They haven't lost to France since that World Cup semifinal back

:10:14.:10:19.

in 2011 and they know a win here tomorrow night

:10:20.:10:23.

would push them to the top of the Six Nations championship.

:10:24.:10:28.

The weekend of rugby has started early with the

:10:29.:10:31.

Newport Gwent Dragons hosting Pro12 champions Glasgow tonight.

:10:32.:10:34.

And it was a fourth defeat in a row for the home side as

:10:35.:10:37.

Final score Dragons 15, Glasgow Warriors 18.

:10:38.:10:45.

A new music festival comes to Wales this summer which the organisers

:10:46.:10:50.

hope will rival some of the UK's best-known cultural events.

:10:51.:10:53.

The Festival of Voice takes place at venues in Cardiff in June,

:10:54.:10:58.

with performances from Bryn Terfel, Charlotte Church and Van Morrison

:10:59.:11:02.

The Millennium Centre will produce the festival every other year.

:11:03.:11:07.

We are ambitiously really targeting people from outside Wales,

:11:08.:11:12.

That is why out of 36 concerts, 20 of them you can only see here.

:11:13.:11:19.

Rufus Wainwright is giving his only UK performance

:11:20.:11:22.

Van and Bryn don't do anything together every week.

:11:23.:11:27.

We have been very focused on trying to provide experiences that people

:11:28.:11:35.

And now let's have a look at what the weather has in store,

:11:36.:11:41.

It's going to stay on the cold side over the next few days.

:11:42.:11:45.

But apart from a few showers there is more

:11:46.:11:47.

Mind you, the breeze is going to pick up and that is going to make

:11:48.:11:54.

Most of the country dry tonight, a few showers are possible

:11:55.:11:58.

Maybe the odd shower turning up in the south later on tonight.

:11:59.:12:02.

Not as cold as recent nights with more cloud around

:12:03.:12:05.

Tomorrow morning, most of Wales dry although a few showers are possible

:12:06.:12:11.

A few flakes of snow on higher ground.

:12:12.:12:15.

The best of the brightness and hazy sunshine likely

:12:16.:12:17.

Across the rest of the UK, most places dry with sunny spells.

:12:18.:12:22.

A few showers are likely in the south and west,

:12:23.:12:26.

With low pressure over Ireland that'll bring some rain

:12:27.:12:30.

Highs of five Celsius in Glasgow, nine in London.

:12:31.:12:35.

In Wales tomorrow afternoon, plenty of cloud.

:12:36.:12:39.

A little snow on some of the hills and feeling chilly again

:12:40.:12:46.

tomorrow with a south to south-easterly breeze.

:12:47.:12:50.

Certainly chilly in the capital tomorrow if you are heading

:12:51.:12:54.

A few spots of rain around the middle of the day,

:12:55.:12:59.

Dry for most of us on Saturday but feeling cold with an east

:13:00.:13:03.

Hopefully the cloud will break allowing some sunshine at times.

:13:04.:13:08.

High pressure then on the way toppling across the UK on Sunday.

:13:09.:13:12.

dry with variable cloud and some sunshine.

:13:13.:13:17.

Still feeling chilly with overnight frost.

:13:18.:13:21.

Into next week, a dry start to Monday but then it looks

:13:22.:13:25.

like turning more unsettled with some rain on the way.

:13:26.:13:27.

That's all from me, I wish you a good night.

:13:28.:13:31.

We're back with updates into Breakfast, starting

:13:32.:13:37.

For now though, from all of us on the programme, good night.

:13:38.:13:40.
