The new secretary of state for Wales Alun Cairns | :00:00. | :00:11.
on his first day, those splits in the cabinet which brought him | :00:12. | :00:14.
to his job and what's in his in-tray. | :00:15. | :00:20.
There is a great of agility about getting a clearer, fairer, stronger | :00:21. | :00:27.
settlement with the Welsh bill. There are also many exciting | :00:28. | :00:31.
opportunities, like a city deal for Cardiff, opening the doors towards a | :00:32. | :00:34.
great deal for North Wales. The steel workers union meets | :00:35. | :00:38.
with Tata's new European boss amid reports that the company | :00:39. | :00:40.
could reject a rescue Its the main railway link into south | :00:41. | :00:43.
and west Wales but in This tunnel will be closed for | :00:44. | :00:57.
almost a month and a half from September for work to electrify the | :00:58. | :01:03.
rail. We will have an exclusive report. | :01:04. | :01:05.
Lifeguards are to patrol one of our most popular beaches | :01:06. | :01:08.
In tonight's sport, Dan Biggar turns to coaching. | :01:09. | :01:13.
And through the eyes of the Welsh fly-half we'll look back at this | :01:14. | :01:16.
I could have done with a view of you boys yesterday as well! | :01:17. | :01:36.
The new Secretary of State for Wales says he wants to prioritise | :01:37. | :01:38.
Alun Cairns said he would hold a summit next week to look at ways | :01:39. | :01:47.
of driving forward investment with a "growth deal" for the region. | :01:48. | :01:49.
Mr Cairns, who replaces Stephen Crabb, says he wants | :01:50. | :02:02.
He -- he replaces in Duncan Smith. Here is our correspondent. It is the | :02:03. | :02:09.
best of times and worst of times. A motion for Stephen Crabb and Alun | :02:10. | :02:12.
Cairns, the party at civil war over Europe and the budget. At the | :02:13. | :02:16.
Downing Street door closed for Iain Duncan Smith it opened this morning | :02:17. | :02:23.
for this man, Stephen Crabb's deputies since 2014 and he inherits | :02:24. | :02:26.
the top job at the Welsh Office and the task of steering the next stage | :02:27. | :02:31.
of Welsh devolution into law. How will you do the job differently? I | :02:32. | :02:38.
plan to follow the chromatic approach Stephen Crabb followed as a | :02:39. | :02:44.
secretary of state. -- the approach. It is about relations with the | :02:45. | :02:48.
business sector, the authorities and communities across Wales. I want to | :02:49. | :02:52.
be pragmatic as secretary of state. Who is Alun Cairns? Eat a appear in | :02:53. | :02:57.
the Swansea Valley and began working life in a bank. He was one of the | :02:58. | :03:04.
regional semi members in 1999 and his Westminster career was almost | :03:05. | :03:08.
over before it began. He was suspended as a candidate after he | :03:09. | :03:11.
made a drug-free comment about the candidates. He apologised and was | :03:12. | :03:15.
elected MP for the Vale of Glamorgan in 2010. A regular runner, he was | :03:16. | :03:20.
the fastest MP in the London Marathon two years ago. Labour say | :03:21. | :03:26.
he can run but cannot hide. We also need to see a lot more focus on what | :03:27. | :03:30.
exactly these announcements about North Wales and the city region of | :03:31. | :03:36.
Swansea mean. They were made last week but no detail at all about | :03:37. | :03:40.
whether there will be any money coming to help these areas. He has | :03:41. | :03:45.
also lined up alongside Stephen Crabb for the Parliamentary Rugby | :03:46. | :03:49.
team. Stephen Crabb will lead all of his skills to tackle his new job, | :03:50. | :03:55.
and having met start at the DWP this morning he faced MPs to say the | :03:56. | :03:58.
controversial cuts to personal independence payments for disabled | :03:59. | :04:05.
people will not now be going ahead. As a one nation Conservative my | :04:06. | :04:08.
vision is to support everybody to achieve their full potential and | :04:09. | :04:12.
live independently. That means people having the stability and | :04:13. | :04:15.
security of a decent job and children growing up at home with | :04:16. | :04:19.
that benefit of that stability. In his new job he will recognise a | :04:20. | :04:24.
familiar if not friendly ways. His Labour shadow is once again the MP | :04:25. | :04:31.
for Pontypridd. May I start by saying... To the new secretary of | :04:32. | :04:36.
state, that is Welsh for welcome and congratulations. I look forward to | :04:37. | :04:41.
renewing our relationship and on the basis of these statements today it | :04:42. | :04:43.
looks like it will be a bit more productive than the one I had with | :04:44. | :04:49.
his predecessor. So I thank him. Back at the Wales are busy has left | :04:50. | :04:53.
behind, there is another change with the Aberconwy MP taking the role | :04:54. | :05:00.
vacated by Alun Cairns. Maybe one of his most important jobs will be to | :05:01. | :05:04.
improve the relationships of his office with the Welsh government in | :05:05. | :05:09.
Cardiff Bay. Yes, it will. It was striking talking to Alun Cairns. He | :05:10. | :05:13.
kept using the word pragmatic, pragmatism. Not the rabble-rouser | :05:14. | :05:17.
invasion that gets political leaders and voters jeering from the rooftops | :05:18. | :05:23.
but in the last few days they have had, the Conservatives need some | :05:24. | :05:29.
calming down with the Civil War in Cabinet about Europe and indeed the | :05:30. | :05:36.
problems about disability benefit. It was very striking that Alun | :05:37. | :05:40.
Cairns announced his priority was going to be the economy, really | :05:41. | :05:47.
trying to put the constitution in second place. He talks about a | :05:48. | :05:51.
better relationship with the Welsh government in Cardiff. All new | :05:52. | :05:56.
secretary of state 's do that. Then politics tends to get in the way. I | :05:57. | :06:00.
expect normal relations will resume at possibly after the Welsh general | :06:01. | :06:06.
election in May. And a big job facing Stephen Crabb. Massive. You | :06:07. | :06:13.
saw him in the House of Commons flanked by the Prime Minister on one | :06:14. | :06:17.
side, unveilings what was announced in the budget last week. Unravelling | :06:18. | :06:22.
it and saying these cards will not go ahead and that they have no plans | :06:23. | :06:27.
to make any further cuts. Massive budgets. Something like ?170 billion | :06:28. | :06:34.
per year for Stephen Crabb in charge as of now. Clearly he will have more | :06:35. | :06:40.
say over day-to-day life in Wales than he ever did as Welsh secretary. | :06:41. | :06:46.
David in Westminster, thank you. The rest of the day 's news... | :06:47. | :06:51.
The steelworkers' union Community has met the head of Tata steel | :06:52. | :06:53.
in Europe to discuss the future of Port Talbot. | :06:54. | :06:56.
What's been described as an urgent meeting | :06:57. | :06:57.
comes amid reports that Tata could reject a plan | :06:58. | :06:59.
The company's board is set to meet in India next week to decide | :07:00. | :07:04.
Let's talk to our reporter Caroline Evans. | :07:05. | :07:06.
Well you will remember that in January Tata steel announced more | :07:07. | :07:15.
than 1,000 losses, 750 of those at Port Talbot. | :07:16. | :07:17.
It's part of a plan to save the plant and the rest | :07:18. | :07:21.
Now over the weekend there have been reports in the media speculating | :07:22. | :07:28.
that Tata will turn down this plan when the company's | :07:29. | :07:30.
Today the Trade Union Community has been meeting with Hans Fischer | :07:31. | :07:40.
the new European CEO and have reiterated their determination | :07:41. | :07:44.
to make this plan to save the plant work. | :07:45. | :07:53.
In a statement they say the union finds the reports that the Tata | :07:54. | :07:56.
board in India will reject the turnaround plan "deeply | :07:57. | :07:58.
concerning " and they will be doing everything they can to ensure | :07:59. | :08:01.
the company does not go down this route. | :08:02. | :08:05.
They say the workers at Port Talbot have achieved everything asked | :08:06. | :08:08.
of them and deserve the continued support of Tata. | :08:09. | :08:10.
But of course the problems are not confined to Port Talbot, | :08:11. | :08:19.
the steel industry across Europe is under pressure from cheap Chinese | :08:20. | :08:22.
steel said to be flooding the market. | :08:23. | :08:27.
And tonight the community is urging the UK Government to join them | :08:28. | :08:33.
in calling on Tata to suppport Port Talbot and help to make steel | :08:34. | :08:36.
Of course not just at stake the steels jobs at the plant, | :08:37. | :08:41.
but thousands more jobs in the local economy. | :08:42. | :08:43.
The Severn Tunnel, the main rail link between | :08:44. | :08:45.
South Wales and the rest of the UK, will be closed for six | :08:46. | :08:48.
It's to prepare for rail electrification, | :08:49. | :08:50.
which will speed up journey times between South Wales and London. | :08:51. | :08:53.
It'll mean passengers will be diverted or will have to use | :08:54. | :08:55.
replacement buses leading to concerns it could cause | :08:56. | :08:57.
of the Severn Estuary for us tonight. | :08:58. | :09:01.
From where I am in Monmouthshire it is a short trip to the other side of | :09:02. | :09:15.
the border through the Severn tunnel, parallel to the bridge. From | :09:16. | :09:21.
this September it will shut, causing delays to thousands of people using | :09:22. | :09:26.
it everyday. It is because of railway electrification in the | :09:27. | :09:29.
tunnel and I have had an exclusive preview of what has happened is down | :09:30. | :09:30.
here. That happens down here. It is a bit like travelling back in | :09:31. | :09:41.
time. It was built for the age of steam. It is now about to see a | :09:42. | :09:46.
electrification. We are making our way through the tunnel. It is 130 | :09:47. | :09:53.
years old. And all of the cert that is built in overtime needs before it | :09:54. | :09:59.
can be electrified. For months this orange Army have been busy preparing | :10:00. | :10:05.
for the tunnel. This vast machine has drilled 7000 holes into the | :10:06. | :10:10.
roof. Two calamitous inside and engineers are picking up where the | :10:11. | :10:14.
machine left. This is precision work in what has been described as a key | :10:15. | :10:21.
milestone this September. Four miles of rail will run along the roof of | :10:22. | :10:26.
the tunnel and provide the power for the electrified trains. Another | :10:27. | :10:30.
cable will run alongside it to provide back-up power. That work | :10:31. | :10:35.
will take time. Closing the tunnel for a month and a half from | :10:36. | :10:40.
September. Network Rail bosses say electrification will speed up | :10:41. | :10:44.
journey times and that this is the most efficient way to get the work | :10:45. | :10:49.
done. The issue is it would take our engineers about four years to | :10:50. | :10:52.
complete the job if they only worked at weekends. That would have | :10:53. | :10:56.
significant impacts on passenger destruction and delay the | :10:57. | :11:00.
electrification. In the closure, passengers travelling from south | :11:01. | :11:03.
Wales into London will be diverted via Gloucester, adding up to 40 | :11:04. | :11:08.
minutes to the journey. Passengers going to Bristol will have to use | :11:09. | :11:11.
rail replacement buses, also adding 40 minutes. People are advised to | :11:12. | :11:16.
trek which train operator websites for specific routes. -- check with | :11:17. | :11:23.
operator websites. You have to get out one hour earlier. Not ideal. Any | :11:24. | :11:29.
upgrade will be fantastic. But it will cause some real issues. The | :11:30. | :11:35.
watchdog transport focus said the closure could cause massive | :11:36. | :11:37.
disruption and says it will be watching for any unnecessary delays. | :11:38. | :11:43.
We are still planning things. We look at every eventuality is so the | :11:44. | :11:47.
people will not be inconvenienced more than absolutely necessary. | :11:48. | :11:52.
Electrification is exacted to cut 20 minutes from the journey time | :11:53. | :11:55.
between London and Swansea but the almost ?3 billion project is | :11:56. | :11:59.
exceeding the original budget and deadline. Network Rail say the | :12:00. | :12:04.
letter vocation programme was revised after a review last year. | :12:05. | :12:08.
This tunnel will be closed for almost a month and a half for work | :12:09. | :12:13.
to speed up and improve the journey through it but it will mean | :12:14. | :12:18.
disruption for commuters and rail users looking to cross the border | :12:19. | :12:20.
from this September. A police investigation | :12:21. | :12:25.
into allegations that a six week old baby was sold for thousands | :12:26. | :12:27.
of pounds has been dropped. Two Spanish citizens, | :12:28. | :12:29.
a couple in their 20s, were arrested in the Rumney area | :12:30. | :12:31.
of Cardiff last October The child's mother was arrested | :12:32. | :12:34.
at Bristol airport. In the last four years in Wales 55 | :12:35. | :12:40.
convicted criminals have been removed from the sex | :12:41. | :12:43.
offenders' register. Figures obtained by the BBC show 97 | :12:44. | :12:46.
offenders applied to have their name removed under human | :12:47. | :12:49.
rights legislation. North Wales Police approved | :12:50. | :12:51.
18 out of 20 requests, while Dyfed Powys Police | :12:52. | :12:53.
didn't approve any. An Army Sergeant at | :12:54. | :13:01.
the centre of allegations of bullying has told an inquest | :13:02. | :13:03.
he didn't order a female soldier 18-year-old Private Cheryl James | :13:04. | :13:06.
from Llangollen, was found dead at Deepcut Barracks in 1995 | :13:07. | :13:13.
amid claims of bullying Sergeant Andrew Gavaghan | :13:14. | :13:16.
said he didn't know who she was | :13:17. | :13:20.
until the day she died. He said he was shocked and upset | :13:21. | :13:23.
when he discovered he'd The one time managing director | :13:24. | :13:26.
of a bus company has been told to expect a jail sentence | :13:27. | :13:32.
after being found guilty of defrauding the Welsh Government's | :13:33. | :13:35.
flagship bus-pass scheme John Hulme doctored | :13:36. | :13:37.
the books to make it appear which operated from Llanberis | :13:38. | :13:40.
in Gwynedd, was carrying thousands more concessionary passengers | :13:41. | :13:49.
that it really was. That there was a fraud was never in | :13:50. | :14:03.
dispute. Thousands are sparse passengers were double counted. The | :14:04. | :14:07.
company did get hundreds of thousands of taxpayer pounds it was | :14:08. | :14:11.
never in title two. The question in this trial was who was responsible. | :14:12. | :14:19.
-- entitled to. The managing director, said the prosecution. The | :14:20. | :14:22.
defence said he knew nothing about it. It took the jury to add a half | :14:23. | :14:29.
hours to find the manager guilty of fraud and false accounting. | :14:30. | :14:31.
According to the defence he was a buzz week and expert on timetables | :14:32. | :14:36.
but when it came to administrations, he signed what was in front of him. | :14:37. | :14:40.
The prosecution argued he knew exactly what he was doing. His | :14:41. | :14:45.
fraud, the court heard, amounted to half ?1 million. Another director | :14:46. | :14:50.
had already admitted false accounting up to ?300,000 for a time | :14:51. | :14:56.
after a suspension from the company. Put together, the fraud at the | :14:57. | :15:04.
company cost taxpayers ?800,000. The company had more than 70 members of | :15:05. | :15:08.
staff and went out of business. A spokesperson for the Council which | :15:09. | :15:11.
paid the money out on behalf of Welsh government said procedures are | :15:12. | :15:17.
now being reviewed. Sentence on humour and price was adjourned until | :15:18. | :15:21.
Thursday. The judge told John Hume through the trial it had become | :15:22. | :15:26.
clearer, clearer and clearer that he was the author of the fraud, and not | :15:27. | :15:30.
only that, but he showed Darren Price how to do it. John Hume was | :15:31. | :15:35.
told to accept -- expect a custodial sentence. | :15:36. | :15:41.
Lifeguards on patrol. They will be at one of the most popular beaches | :15:42. | :15:47.
after two people drowned here last year. March so far has been the | :15:48. | :15:54.
driest month since last October but there is a big change on the way. | :15:55. | :16:02.
The future of Wales and the rest of the UK in the European Union will | :16:03. | :16:08.
soon be decided in the Referendum. Those campaigning to stay in the | :16:09. | :16:13.
European Union has launched their campaign saying Wales benefited more | :16:14. | :16:15.
from EU membership than any other part of the UK. Daniel Davies was at | :16:16. | :16:21.
the launch of the Wales stronger in Europe campaign. | :16:22. | :16:25.
You could say that's the message from this pro-EU campaign. | :16:26. | :16:29.
It launched at a training company in Cardiff where these young people | :16:30. | :16:31.
are preparing for a career with animals, training that's | :16:32. | :16:34.
If you are heading for the exit, these people want to slow you down. | :16:35. | :16:45.
They say Wales gets more from European Union membership than | :16:46. | :16:49.
anywhere else in the UK and that should not be risked in an uncertain | :16:50. | :16:54.
world. It is investment in all kinds of things, transport, skills, | :16:55. | :17:01.
research, agriculture, tourism. You know, a host of benefits. I think | :17:02. | :17:07.
when people grasp that, they will conclude that it would be madness to | :17:08. | :17:14.
throw all that away and have a pig in a poke. Others long to take us in | :17:15. | :17:23.
another direction. The Leave wants to make it a debate about control | :17:24. | :17:26.
and say the only way to put the people of this country back behind | :17:27. | :17:29.
the steering wheel is to get out of the European Union. When everybody's | :17:30. | :17:34.
future will be brighter when we leave the union, we will be able to | :17:35. | :17:39.
have control over our own laws, make foreign decisions, control funding | :17:40. | :17:44.
in the United Kingdom, rather than letting an unaccountable system of | :17:45. | :17:49.
bureaucrats in Brussels and Armani. By coincidence, shortly after we | :17:50. | :17:53.
arrived, the council came to take down these signs. Had they not got | :17:54. | :17:57.
permission? It is voter permission needed in this Referendum, either to | :17:58. | :18:02.
Leave, or Remain. A bill, ensuring a minimum number | :18:03. | :18:06.
of nurses are working at any one time in Wales' general hospital | :18:07. | :18:10.
wards, became law today. The Welsh Liberal Democrats, | :18:11. | :18:12.
who introduced it, say they plan to extend the law | :18:13. | :18:13.
to cover maternity and mental health wards if they win power | :18:14. | :18:17.
in May's assembly elections. The Wales Green Party has pledged | :18:18. | :18:20.
a "fairer economy and vibrant communities" as it launched | :18:21. | :18:23.
its assembly election campaign. The party's leader Alice | :18:24. | :18:25.
Hooker-Stroud also said no Welsh student studying in Wales | :18:26. | :18:30.
would pay tuition fees under them. The Green Party is hoping to win | :18:31. | :18:33.
a seat in the Assembly for the first People always associate | :18:34. | :18:45.
environmental issues with the Welsh Green Party but in fact we have a | :18:46. | :18:49.
complete package, solutions for environment and society. In top of | :18:50. | :18:53.
the environment we talk about free education, public NHS, and | :18:54. | :18:56.
affordable houses for people. A new lifeguard service is being | :18:57. | :18:59.
launched at Three Cliffs Bay in the Gower following two | :19:00. | :19:01.
drownings there last year. The family of Benny Collins, | :19:02. | :19:03.
who drowned at the beauty spot, support the new service, | :19:04. | :19:06.
which will see the RNLI, landowners and the National | :19:07. | :19:08.
Trust working together. From this Easter, | :19:09. | :19:10.
for the first time, lifeguards will be watching | :19:11. | :19:23.
over Three Cliffs Bay. swimmers have drowned in these | :19:24. | :19:25.
waters. There are signs warning | :19:26. | :19:28.
people not to bathe, but in the end the community | :19:29. | :19:30.
and landowners decided they needed We have increased signage. We are | :19:31. | :19:44.
working with the RNLI and our neighbours to try this pilot and see | :19:45. | :19:50.
how it goes. And just increase safety so that people can enjoy the | :19:51. | :19:51.
place. At the moment the sea is calm | :19:52. | :19:52.
and safe for swimming, but the problem is when the tide | :19:53. | :19:59.
comes in and that creates a rip and it's that | :20:00. | :20:02.
which is particularly treacherous. It proved so for | :20:03. | :20:04.
40-year-old Benny Collins. He was fit and strong, | :20:05. | :20:07.
an able swimmer. When he died after being swept out | :20:08. | :20:12.
to sea last July the community launched an action group | :20:13. | :20:15.
and got the RNLI on board. The lifeguards are here between ten | :20:16. | :20:25.
o'clock and six o'clock and will be here every day over the Easter | :20:26. | :20:28.
holidays and will be here weekends and holidays in May and June and | :20:29. | :20:32.
full-time for peak season and the lifeguards will always be with the | :20:33. | :20:36.
red and yellow flags when it is safe for people to swim so we would | :20:37. | :20:40.
always urge people to look out for those. | :20:41. | :20:41.
The charity will pay for this first year, | :20:42. | :20:43.
but after that it'll be down to local businesses and residents | :20:44. | :20:45.
to fund half the cost, which could be up to | :20:46. | :20:48.
It is up to us now, the different businesses and villages, there was | :20:49. | :20:59.
even a 90-year-old in the village, we want people to enjoy the beach | :21:00. | :21:03.
but in a safe manner so working together, I think we can get this, | :21:04. | :21:06.
it will be a standard thing, we will get lifeguards at three clubs. | :21:07. | :21:13.
this will make others more aware of the dangers | :21:14. | :21:19.
and prevent any one else from losing their life. | :21:20. | :21:22.
Wales rugby coach, Warren Gatland, says his squad will have 'no fear' | :21:23. | :21:28.
travelling to New Zealand despite not, in his words, | :21:29. | :21:30.
quite 'clicking' as a team in this year's Six Nations. | :21:31. | :21:32.
Dan Biggar, added they have a "fabulous chance" of beating | :21:33. | :21:35.
the World Champions on this Summer's tour. | :21:36. | :21:36.
I went to meet the fly-half at the end of a campaign that saw | :21:37. | :21:40.
Wales finish as the Championship runners up behind England. | :21:41. | :21:46.
You are going to teach me some things. Not the other way around. | :21:47. | :21:54.
Fresh from orchestrating wins over Italy, Dan Biggar was brought down | :21:55. | :21:58.
to earth, coaching the under tens this weekend. I could have done with | :21:59. | :22:04.
you yesterday. With passing and tackling drills, he took time to | :22:05. | :22:10.
reflect on the six Nations campaign. It was not successful finishing | :22:11. | :22:14.
second. We set standards higher than that and unless we win it it will be | :22:15. | :22:19.
deemed a failure. But I think for us, it was a tough 40 minutes | :22:20. | :22:25.
against England which cost us the championship but overall we played | :22:26. | :22:28.
some good rugby against Scotland, a tough win against France. England | :22:29. | :22:34.
are the grand slam winners. What about the general standard of this | :22:35. | :22:38.
year's contest? It is a poor tournament. Wales are there with the | :22:39. | :22:42.
best in the world. Ireland have dipped because of injuries. England | :22:43. | :22:47.
did what they had to do and they did it well. I was very impressed with | :22:48. | :22:52.
how they played. They deservedly won it, honestly. I think they will go | :22:53. | :22:57.
from strength to strength. We are trying to play rugby, of course. But | :22:58. | :23:01.
against France it is about knuckling down, rolling up your sleeves and | :23:02. | :23:05.
producing a win. It is not always fancy stuff. It is about knuckling | :23:06. | :23:09.
down and that is when you find that more about your team. Will there be | :23:10. | :23:15.
a scout in New Zealand? We have got to be positive going down there. | :23:16. | :23:19.
It'll be interesting to see how they respond. They have a lot of | :23:20. | :23:23.
experience and good players. That gap is closing and we have a | :23:24. | :23:26.
fabulous chance in the summer picking up a scout in the southern | :23:27. | :23:30.
hemisphere. They can put the pain of the England game behind them but | :23:31. | :23:34.
they will return to Twickenham for a so-called friendly on May the 29th. | :23:35. | :23:39.
That is when they hope to carry on the Saturday try scoring form as | :23:40. | :23:43.
they prepare for the tour of New Zealand, starting in Auckland on | :23:44. | :23:44.
Junior Levens. -- June at the 11th. Onto football and Gareth Bale has | :23:45. | :23:50.
become the leading British scoring in Real Madrid's | :23:51. | :23:53.
4-0 win over Sevilla. The Wales forward hit the post | :23:54. | :23:56.
and had a strike dis-allowed before tapping in his 43rd goal | :23:57. | :23:58.
in the Spanish top flight, Wales captain Ashley Williams admits | :23:59. | :24:01.
he and his Swansea teammates have "got it wrong" in the Premier | :24:02. | :24:06.
League this season. The Swans beat Aston Villa 1-0 | :24:07. | :24:09.
on Saturday to take them closer to survival in their fight | :24:10. | :24:11.
against relegation. But wherever they finish, | :24:12. | :24:15.
Williams says a serious inquest must Meanwhile, the Wales squad gathered | :24:16. | :24:17.
this afternoon ahead of Thursday's friendly against Northern Ireland | :24:18. | :24:25.
and next Monday's trip to Ukraine. Striker Hal Robson-Kanu is doubtful | :24:26. | :24:28.
after picking up a thigh problem playing for Reading | :24:29. | :24:31.
against Cardiff on Saturday. The Bluebirds secured a draw in that | :24:32. | :24:35.
game thanks to Lex Immers' header but are now three points off | :24:36. | :24:38.
the play-off positions. Newport scored within two | :24:39. | :24:40.
minutes before eventually Wrexham were 3- | :24:41. | :24:45.
0 winners over Chester. And the Cardiff Devils have finished | :24:46. | :24:56.
second in ice hockey's Elite League. Despite two wins over | :24:57. | :24:59.
the weekend, including this 4-3 victory over Nottingham | :25:00. | :25:01.
Panthers last night, they've lost out to Sheffield | :25:02. | :25:02.
Steelers, who finish on top. The Devils wil now aim to win | :25:03. | :25:05.
The League Play-Offs. That is your sport. Now the weather. | :25:06. | :25:13.
Derek. We've had a good run | :25:14. | :25:18.
of dry weather recently. March so far the driest | :25:19. | :25:20.
month since last October. The weather pattern | :25:21. | :25:27.
is about to change. The best of the sunshine today | :25:28. | :25:28.
has been in the south. Lovely in Llantwit Major and Cardiff | :25:29. | :25:31.
was one of the warmest places This picture from Vicky | :25:32. | :25:34.
shows cloud in Barmouth. Last night the temperature in Bala | :25:35. | :25:40.
dropped to minus three. Not quite so cold tonight | :25:41. | :25:48.
but still cold enough So a chilly start | :25:49. | :25:50.
tomorrow but dry. Here is the picture for eight | :25:51. | :25:59.
o'clock. The odd mist or fog patch possible | :26:00. | :26:01.
but bright in places with sunshine. The temperature in Cardigan around | :26:02. | :26:10.
six with hardly a breath of wind. So another dry, | :26:11. | :26:13.
settled day tomorrow. Plenty of cloud | :26:14. | :26:15.
but bright in places. seven to ten Celsius, | :26:16. | :26:17.
but if the sun breaks through it will feel pleasant | :26:18. | :26:29.
with light winds. The temperature in Llanrwst | :26:30. | :26:32.
rising to nine Celsius Cloudier than today with a high | :26:33. | :26:37.
of seven Celsius in Quakers Yard. Plenty of cloud with a few | :26:38. | :26:44.
bright or sunny intervals. Maybe the odd light shower | :26:45. | :26:50.
but no more than that. Now the atmosphere has been blocked | :26:51. | :26:52.
with high pressure recently but on Thursday the jet stream over | :26:53. | :26:55.
the Atlantic will start to influence our weather again, | :26:56. | :26:57.
pushing weather fronts The rest of Easter weekend more | :26:58. | :26:59.
unsettled and changeable. Breezy, even windy at times, | :27:00. | :27:20.
but not a total right off. Some drier, brighter | :27:21. | :27:27.
interludes likely as well. So the longest dry spell | :27:28. | :27:29.
since October will finally break Cheering up again for Good Friday. | :27:30. | :27:45.
The new Secretary of State for Wales says he would like to prioritise the | :27:46. | :27:48.
North Wales economy. He replaced Stephen Crabb, who is the new work | :27:49. | :27:54.
and pensions secretary. I will have an update at eight o'clock and again | :27:55. | :27:59.
after the BBC News at ten. That is Wales Today. Thank you for watching. | :28:00. | :28:04.
From all of us on the programme, good evening. | :28:05. | :28:06. |
