Welcome to Wales Today - our top stories. | :00:00. | :00:00.
The deaths of four people in a road accident | :00:00. | :00:11.
in the Brecon Beacons - the inquest finds a deadly | :00:12. | :00:13.
combination of factors were to blame. | :00:14. | :00:15.
And politics is all about personality - | :00:16. | :00:16.
according to Welsh Labour - as they launch their | :00:17. | :00:19.
The deadly combination of an inexperienced driver - | :00:20. | :00:39.
travelling at speed - and peer pressure - | :00:40. | :00:41.
led to the deaths of four people in a road crash on the A470. | :00:42. | :00:46.
The inquest heard 17 year old Rhodri Miller-Binding | :00:47. | :00:48.
had only passed his test two days before his car was involved in | :00:49. | :00:51.
a head on crash with another car - bringing a grandmother home | :00:52. | :00:56.
The inquest was told the teenagers were travelling in a 9 car convoy - | :00:57. | :01:03.
and had been texting photos of the speedometer. | :01:04. | :01:05.
It was a crash which ended the lives of four people and ruined the lives | :01:06. | :01:21.
of many more. Rhodri Miller-Binding had just passed his test. He lost | :01:22. | :01:29.
control of his car. To tackle the unknown the rain of the victorious | :01:30. | :01:33.
road which has claimed many lives, to all involved, was sheer lunacy. | :01:34. | :01:39.
He passed his test only 48 hours prior, he didn't stand a chance. The | :01:40. | :01:43.
speed at which they were travelling, the amount of weight in his car, the | :01:44. | :01:46.
dark, the adrenaline, the peer pressure, his inexperience, all | :01:47. | :01:52.
contributed to that fatal crash. The court heard how his car was 1 of 7 | :01:53. | :01:59.
vehicles in a convoy heading for Brecon. 1 witness told his partner | :02:00. | :02:07.
they were boy racers. After the crash, police seized 28 mobile | :02:08. | :02:10.
phones from those at the scene, and found messages about speed. 1 was | :02:11. | :02:21.
recorded saying: but the coroner concluded he had not been breaking | :02:22. | :02:28.
the speed limit. He said experience, peer pressure was a deadly | :02:29. | :02:34.
combination -- inexperience. After the hearing, the families of the | :02:35. | :02:37.
other teenagers who died paid tribute to them. It is almost | :02:38. | :02:42.
impossible to put into words how devastating the loss of our | :02:43. | :02:46.
devastating daughter has been fostered not a day goes by where the | :02:47. | :02:50.
pain and sadness we feel, with nothing will ever be the same. Now | :02:51. | :02:55.
the inquest has arrived, we can concentrate and grieve properly for | :02:56. | :02:58.
our little angel. We would like to thank our family and friends. We can | :02:59. | :03:04.
never be the same without our loving and most caring son and brother. Not | :03:05. | :03:09.
a day goes by without us thinking of that tragic night. Heaven has gained | :03:10. | :03:17.
the brightest star. Margaret Challis, was on her way home from | :03:18. | :03:20.
the theatre, was no stranger to grief. She had lost a brother and | :03:21. | :03:25.
sister in the Aberfan disaster but had gone on to rebuild life. Her | :03:26. | :03:29.
son, 1 of her 6 children, said she would want to forgive. Today, 1 | :03:30. | :03:34.
important message for each family involved you're children are safe | :03:35. | :03:45.
and at peace now, we are sure they will wrap their arms around them and | :03:46. | :03:49.
continue to do so. Rhodri's mother wants the law around new driver | :03:50. | :03:54.
strengthened to protect them. The coroner is recommending a sign be | :03:55. | :03:57.
put up at the centre warn against the sweeping bend in the road. | :03:58. | :04:01.
The UK business secretary has told MPs that - | :04:02. | :04:03.
any potential UK government "co-investment" with a private buyer | :04:04. | :04:05.
in Port Talbot steelworks could involve taking on some | :04:06. | :04:08.
Sajid Javid told a three-hour emergency debate | :04:09. | :04:14.
on the crisis that he's fighting for Britain's | :04:15. | :04:16.
steelworkers "every hour of the day" to resolve the problems | :04:17. | :04:18.
But Labour said the government's response had been "wanting". | :04:19. | :04:32.
An investigation has been found after an inmate was found dead in | :04:33. | :04:39.
his cell at Swansea prison. They will be an investigation by the | :04:40. | :04:47.
independent ombudsman. A man has been found guilty of murdering a | :04:48. | :04:50.
Cardiff father with a hammer. James Williams was with 3 friends when he | :04:51. | :04:56.
chased his victim down the street in Grangetown. The 3 other men were | :04:57. | :04:57.
cleared of murder. A memorial service has been held | :04:58. | :05:00.
at Westminster Abbey to commemorate the British victims of last summer's | :05:01. | :05:03.
terror attack on a beach in Tunisia. 30 British people were killed - | :05:04. | :05:06.
including 52 year old Trudy Jones from Blackwood - | :05:07. | :05:09.
when a gunman opened fire Her son, Gavin Davis, | :05:10. | :05:11.
says his mother was killed She was innocent, along with | :05:12. | :05:34.
everybody else on the beach. She went away on holiday and she hasn't | :05:35. | :05:41.
come home. We all still struggling with it now, day-to-day, it's not | :05:42. | :05:43.
getting any easier. At least that's the view | :05:44. | :05:45.
of Welsh Labour - who launched their assembly election | :05:46. | :05:49.
campaign with a focus on the leadership of their leader | :05:50. | :05:51.
Carwyn Jones. The party says their strategy | :05:52. | :05:53.
based around personality is a reflection of the age | :05:54. | :05:55.
we live in. Our political editor Nick Servini | :05:56. | :05:57.
was at the launch on Barry Island. Step forward Carwyn Jones. There are | :05:58. | :06:13.
dozens of Labour candidates, but he is the 1 that really matters for | :06:14. | :06:17.
them. They are supposed to be in the middle of a tough election but it | :06:18. | :06:21.
was smiles all round in the sunshine of Barry Island for today's launch. | :06:22. | :06:26.
We will have to wait next week for the party's detailed spending plans. | :06:27. | :06:31.
In the meantime, this was all about Labour's intention to base much of | :06:32. | :06:35.
their campaign on asking voters the simple question, who do you want as | :06:36. | :06:41.
First Minister? It's all about personality and not policies, do you | :06:42. | :06:46.
accept that? Partly, you can't get away from that. We saw that the | :06:47. | :06:49.
general election, people in the last minute but, maybe David Cameron | :06:50. | :06:55.
looks the part more than anybody else, changed their minds there and | :06:56. | :06:58.
then say you can't get away from the fact that people get influenced by | :06:59. | :07:04.
that. Behind-the-scenes Labour believe that invents in Westminster, | :07:05. | :07:09.
particularly involving infighting within the Conservatives, criticism | :07:10. | :07:15.
of the Tories, is playing well on the doorstep in their campaign. But | :07:16. | :07:19.
there are still question marks over their campaigning strategy, | :07:20. | :07:23.
particularly after they called it so badly wrong in the general election | :07:24. | :07:28.
campaign last year. Janice Gregory is coordinating the efforts on the | :07:29. | :07:32.
ground. This time round, she says they are alive to the threat from | :07:33. | :07:40.
UKIP. If the "Lost us the Vale of Clwyd, the Gower constituency, | :07:41. | :07:45.
people understand this is a different election, it's an election | :07:46. | :07:49.
for Wales and we are telling people the danger of them voting UKIP in | :07:50. | :07:52.
this election, it's a fight between us and the Tories. Calm today but it | :07:53. | :07:58.
may not last long, as opponents tried to take the focus away from | :07:59. | :08:02.
personality and onto Labour's record in power. | :08:03. | :08:09.
The leader of UKIP in Wales, Nathan Gill, has admitted that | :08:10. | :08:12.
he would never have chosen two of the party's most | :08:13. | :08:14.
high-profile candidates to stand for the assembly. | :08:15. | :08:16.
The selection of the former Conservative MPs Mark Reckless | :08:17. | :08:19.
and Neil Hamilton has already proved controversial among | :08:20. | :08:23.
party members in Wales. Here's Carys Notley. | :08:24. | :08:30.
The Hamilton and Mark reckless happen at the heart of the bitter | :08:31. | :08:34.
row among UKIP members in recent months. The accession was they were | :08:35. | :08:38.
parachuted in as regional candidates. Local party members were | :08:39. | :08:41.
later given a chance to vote on a list approved by the National | :08:42. | :08:46.
executive committee but tensions clearly remain. Tonight on BBC | :08:47. | :08:51.
Wales's debates, Nathan Gill was asked whether they have forced on | :08:52. | :08:55.
the party in Wales. Would I have other people to come in over our | :08:56. | :09:00.
hard-working Welsh membership? Probably not. But it wasn't my | :09:01. | :09:06.
decision. And the members have given us these candidates... You would | :09:07. | :09:13.
rather they want fair? Would I have chosen that? No. He later said the | :09:14. | :09:21.
men would be an asset, with years of experience. On other matters, he | :09:22. | :09:25.
claimed current problems facing the steel industry on low tariffs | :09:26. | :09:31.
imposed by the EU on China. He said he would save nearly ?80,000,000 and | :09:32. | :09:34.
he was in power in Cardiff Bay by scrapping policies on a change, | :09:35. | :09:39.
which it claimed don't exist. The most expensive piece in Dili backrub | :09:40. | :09:46.
legislation was Ed Miliband's climate change act which is | :09:47. | :09:51.
basically pushed senior citizens, ... So we do nothing on climate | :09:52. | :10:01.
change? No. He ended the debate with an honest assessment of his | :10:02. | :10:06.
leadership, saying at times it had been like herding cats because of | :10:07. | :10:07.
the fiery nature of the party. They say the best things | :10:08. | :10:10.
in life are free - well many people in Laugharne | :10:11. | :10:12.
would like to keep it that way - Visitors to the town have always | :10:13. | :10:15.
enjoyed free parking on the Strand, but planning permission for 13 | :10:16. | :10:19.
new homes on the high street could A new scheme by Carmarthenshire | :10:20. | :10:22.
Council to manage parking spaces and introduce charges has been met | :10:23. | :10:26.
by fierce opposition. When people come now, they don't | :10:27. | :10:41.
have to look at their wristwatch, the comeback not to have a 60 can't | :10:42. | :10:45.
get on their car, leave it as it is, it works. There are ongoing costs, | :10:46. | :10:51.
not the dogs come here to walk, would provide bags, they are being | :10:52. | :10:55.
provided by the people here, I don't see why visitors shouldn't share | :10:56. | :10:58.
that those as well. Wrexham have been dealt major blow | :10:59. | :11:00.
to their national league play-off hopes - after losing 3-1 | :11:01. | :11:04.
to Guiseley. They are now 8th in the table, | :11:05. | :11:06.
6 points adrift from the play-off A mixture of sunshine and April | :11:07. | :11:26.
showers, some big showers in South Wales early this evening, hail and | :11:27. | :11:29.
thunder in places and symptomatic lightning as well. -- some dramatic | :11:30. | :11:39.
lightning. It's looking dry for most of us, clear spells, 1 or 2 mist and | :11:40. | :11:43.
fog patches forming, maybe some showers in the south-west later in | :11:44. | :11:46.
the night and quite cool, particularly in the countryside. | :11:47. | :11:53.
Tomorrow morning much of the country is dry, mist and fog patches will | :11:54. | :11:56.
lift, the best of the sunshine likely in mid and North Wales. | :11:57. | :12:06.
Across the rest of the UK, and North - South divide, northern areas are | :12:07. | :12:10.
cloudy with outbreaks of rain for Southern and eastern Scotland, | :12:11. | :12:14.
further south, mist and fog patches will lift, some sunshine but also a | :12:15. | :12:20.
scattering of showers, heavy and thundery in places, and a wide range | :12:21. | :12:25.
in temperature. Much cooler in the North. Close to home, mixture of | :12:26. | :12:33.
sunshine and scattered showers tomorrow afternoon, the showers, hit | :12:34. | :12:39.
and miss. A lot of places will stay dry, and fairly warm. Showers will | :12:40. | :12:46.
tend to fade away tomorrow evening, the odd 1 continuing overnight, | :12:47. | :12:50.
otherwise many places, dry, not quite so chilly. Low pressure on our | :12:51. | :12:58.
doorstep on Thursday, so some try, bright weather and sunshine wants | :12:59. | :13:06.
again. They could be heavy showers as well. Some heavy rain potentially | :13:07. | :13:11.
in places on Friday, hopefully a little sunshine, turning cooler over | :13:12. | :13:17.
the weekend. Perhaps some snow over the hill and mountains. | :13:18. | :13:24.
We are back tomorrow morning. Good night. | :13:25. | :13:27. |
