Climate activists halt work at the UK's largest opencast coal

:00:00.:00:08.

mine at Ffos y Fran in Merthyr Tydfil.

:00:09.:00:11.

There are now two confirmed bidders interested in buying Tata steel.

:00:12.:00:33.

Hundreds of climate activists are holding a protest at the UK's

:00:34.:00:37.

largest opencast coal mine in Merthyr Tydfil.

:00:38.:00:40.

Work at the Ffos-y-Fran site has been halted and police are present.

:00:41.:00:43.

The campaigners are calling for more renewable power and green jobs.

:00:44.:00:47.

One small group has chained themselves to heavy machinery.

:00:48.:00:51.

Our environment correspondent Steffan Messenger reports.

:00:52.:01:04.

As the sun rose over their makeshift camp at Ffos y Fran mine these

:01:05.:01:09.

climate campaigners set off for what they called

:01:10.:01:11.

A smaller group had gone ahead, engine

:01:12.:01:16.

the site and chaining themselves to heavy machinery.

:01:17.:01:20.

Usually, the mine behind me would be a hive of

:01:21.:01:22.

activity, with trucks and JCB is going about their work.

:01:23.:01:25.

As you can see, today, for a few hours at least,

:01:26.:01:27.

Protesters have halted operations here are Ffos y

:01:28.:01:31.

The main entrance was also closed off by demonstrations.

:01:32.:01:37.

It's all in response to plans by the owners

:01:38.:01:39.

for another opencast site in

:01:40.:01:41.

We grew up here, this environment is irreplaceable.

:01:42.:01:48.

If we continue to burn coal that crosses a red line for the climate.

:01:49.:01:51.

We need to keep coal in the ground if we are to avoid catastrophic

:01:52.:01:54.

The future of energy doesn't lie with coal, that lies in

:01:55.:01:58.

green, renewable technology and the jobs that come with it.

:01:59.:02:01.

Ffos y Fran is the UK's largest opencast mine,

:02:02.:02:04.

the size of some 400 football pitches.

:02:05.:02:06.

Its managing director told me it supports jobs in the local

:02:07.:02:09.

community as well as the steel industry in South Wales.

:02:10.:02:12.

Mining coal locally means it doesn't have to be

:02:13.:02:15.

imported from other far-flung destinations, reducing its carbon

:02:16.:02:18.

The project is also one of land reclamation, returning the

:02:19.:02:25.

landscape back to open moorland as coal is extracted.

:02:26.:02:28.

Coal is part and parcel of giving affordable anxious

:02:29.:02:36.

We want a balanced debate between climate change policies,

:02:37.:02:44.

which, you know, we all recognise are important, but affordable

:02:45.:02:46.

generation and supporting our own industries.

:02:47.:02:49.

Those protesting are urging politicians to call time on

:02:50.:02:51.

coal, timing their protest so that it falls days before local and

:02:52.:02:53.

Miller Argent say they support jobs and the local community, they

:02:54.:03:00.

support the wider steel industry, a lot of people

:03:01.:03:04.

will lose they work if

:03:05.:03:05.

Well, the thing is that there is a massive opportunity

:03:06.:03:09.

If we look towards a renewable energy future, improving

:03:10.:03:14.

There are huge amounts of sustainable

:03:15.:03:17.

We could employ those people and use those

:03:18.:03:23.

Tonight the protesters pack their bags after a

:03:24.:03:33.

long weekend in the company of the giant coalmine, the thorny issue

:03:34.:03:36.

about whether opencast sites like this have a future in the UK will be

:03:37.:03:39.

Two brothers who worked as teachers in Gwynedd have been charged

:03:40.:03:45.

with possessing and making indecent images of children.

:03:46.:03:49.

Robyn Wheldon-Williams was a teacher at Ysgol Syr Hugh Owen secondary

:03:50.:03:52.

His brother, Dyfan, was a teacher at Ysgol Y Moelwyn

:03:53.:03:58.

The charges do not relate to their work for the local authority.

:03:59.:04:04.

Both were have been bailed to appear at Caernarfon Magistrates Court.

:04:05.:04:08.

A body has been found in the Menai Straits at Treborth.

:04:09.:04:10.

Police were alerted by a member of the public last night

:04:11.:04:13.

and the body was recovered by the coastguard.

:04:14.:04:15.

The person has not yet been identified and police

:04:16.:04:18.

Two business groups who want to buy TATA steel's UK plants have formally

:04:19.:04:26.

entered the sale by submitting Letters of Intent.

:04:27.:04:29.

One is Liberty House, the commodity group which owns

:04:30.:04:32.

a former steelworks in Newport as well as Uskmouth Power station.

:04:33.:04:36.

The other interested party is a management buyout

:04:37.:04:40.

team called Excalibur, which includes the billionaire

:04:41.:04:42.

The hot strip mill here at Port Talbot has just

:04:43.:04:51.

3.2 million tonnes of steel in the last year.

:04:52.:04:56.

Tata UK's operation supplies 50% of the metal for

:04:57.:04:59.

From BMW and Honda to Tata's own brands of Jaguar and LandRover.

:05:00.:05:05.

Workers here are proud of what they do, and hope

:05:06.:05:08.

their quality and commitment will help them find a buyer for this

:05:09.:05:11.

currently loss-making iron and steel business.

:05:12.:05:15.

Blast Furnace number four here at Port Talbot is one

:05:16.:05:17.

But how many buyers will be prepared to

:05:18.:05:22.

Today, the Liberty group expressed its official interest

:05:23.:05:27.

in buying Tata Steel's remaining UK assets.

:05:28.:05:31.

However, they've always talked about steelmaking from scrap

:05:32.:05:34.

steel and not utilising these blast furnaces.

:05:35.:05:37.

Another letter of interest has also come in from a management employee

:05:38.:05:40.

They say they're confident they can make it profitable.

:05:41.:05:47.

Staff here say whoever buys the plant, they'd be getting

:05:48.:05:49.

They would be buying a fantastic asset.

:05:50.:05:53.

They are buying, obviously, the people as

:05:54.:05:55.

well, who are skilled and proud to work here.

:05:56.:05:58.

But they are buying assets operating at the top of their

:05:59.:06:01.

At the centre of this 13.5 kilometre site,

:06:02.:06:07.

are the remains of 13th century Cistercian monastery.

:06:08.:06:09.

Legend has it, if the wall tumbles, it will bring a curse

:06:10.:06:12.

Hoping to help keep this plant propped up, First Minister Carwyn

:06:13.:06:22.

Jones was at Port Talbot today promising workers he wouldn't stop

:06:23.:06:25.

But, on the frontline, those workers remain apprehensive

:06:26.:06:29.

Workers like Alan Hooper who's been working in the steel industry

:06:30.:06:34.

And I daresay his father worked here as well, probably.

:06:35.:06:43.

For it to close would be probably devastating.

:06:44.:06:49.

Tata Steel has not set a deadline, but says it cannot

:06:50.:06:51.

sustain its losses indefinitely and does not want to prolong uncertainty

:06:52.:06:55.

The government has promised to support any buyer by

:06:56.:07:04.

taking up to a 25% stake in a new business

:07:05.:07:08.

millions of pounds of finance available.

:07:09.:07:19.

More cases of hepatitis A have been confirmed at a school in Caerphilly.

:07:20.:07:22.

There are now six confirmed cases associated with

:07:23.:07:24.

Glyn-Gaer Primary School in Gelligaer, plus two

:07:25.:07:28.

Public Health Wales said, 270 pupils and adults at the school

:07:29.:07:33.

have been vaccinated as a precaution and letters have been sent home

:07:34.:07:37.

A couple from the Vale of Glamorgan who were attacked while on holiday

:07:38.:07:45.

in Thailand have described the assault to a Thai court.

:07:46.:07:48.

Rosemary and Lewis Owen from Wenvoe were hospitalised

:07:49.:07:51.

Six men have been charged with grievous assault.

:07:52.:07:57.

The couple, who are flying home today, won't have to return

:07:58.:08:00.

20 years ago, Llandudno's Pier Pavilion burnt to the ground,

:08:01.:08:07.

two decades on could its site finally be redeveloped?

:08:08.:08:10.

The sea front pavilion once provided a stage for everyone from singing

:08:11.:08:13.

Previous plans for the site stalled, now a new developer has stepped

:08:14.:08:20.

You can imagine the advertising blurb now.

:08:21.:08:32.

You may think how this plot has remained an eyesore for so long.

:08:33.:08:37.

As the battles continue, thick smoke filled the night air.

:08:38.:08:40.

This was how Wales Today reported the fire that destroyed

:08:41.:08:42.

No one who saw the blaze will ever forget it.

:08:43.:08:49.

Within minutes, the building was engulfed.

:08:50.:08:53.

With flames shooting 100 feet into the air, guests

:08:54.:08:55.

and staff were evacuated from the adjacent Grand Hotel.

:08:56.:09:00.

The heat was so intense, cars parked nearby burst into flames.

:09:01.:09:04.

A Victorian gem reduced to nothing more than tangled ironwork.

:09:05.:09:09.

But then you have got to take into consideration the sensitivity

:09:10.:09:16.

This man, Alan Waldron, has bought it and is in the process of putting

:09:17.:09:23.

In Llandudno, there have been some good investment and good players,

:09:24.:09:30.

so the hotel side of it we have left alone.

:09:31.:09:34.

What we're looking at here, because it is a hole in the ground,

:09:35.:09:37.

we are looking at parking, commercial and some residential.

:09:38.:09:42.

That's why I said you've got to look at finances.

:09:43.:09:47.

To be fair to the local authority, they know this is the reason

:09:48.:09:50.

They are talking around ?15 million and hope

:09:51.:09:55.

The pier Pavilion, where Conservative leaders have been

:09:56.:10:00.

Amongst other things it hosted political party conferences.

:10:01.:10:08.

In the 50s, the Prime Minister Winston Churchill spoke there.

:10:09.:10:11.

At the time, of the fire, the building was already in decline.

:10:12.:10:14.

Many in Llandudno remember the old place.

:10:15.:10:18.

Visitors will tell you the state of it now let the resort down.

:10:19.:10:22.

It's a disgrace, because it is so nice around here.

:10:23.:10:26.

Ceri Stonehouse recalls meeting the singer Tommy Steele there.

:10:27.:10:38.

You can't get anything more beautiful than this.

:10:39.:10:51.

Previous ideas involve putting a hotel here.

:10:52.:10:54.

It is also an extremely difficult site to develop.

:10:55.:11:02.

They jealously guard the look of the place.

:11:03.:11:05.

Whatever the developer comes up with will be subject

:11:06.:11:07.

Cricket, and in Canterbury Glamorgan reached a total of 414 in the second

:11:08.:11:14.

innings of their County Championship Match.

:11:15.:11:16.

David Lloyd and Graham Wagg each scored a century.

:11:17.:11:21.

Tomorrow, on the final day of play, Kent will need a further 165 runs.

:11:22.:11:25.

Lovely weather for watching cricket, and the sunshine goes on Derek ?

:11:26.:11:35.

Yes, it's looking promising for the next few days. More sunshine and

:11:36.:11:43.

becoming warmer as well. Temperatures rising above average

:11:44.:11:48.

over the next few days. In fact, some places could end up warmer than

:11:49.:11:54.

parts of Spain over the weekend. 21 services, 17 Fahrenheit. Tonight a

:11:55.:12:01.

dry story, fairly clear skies with temperatures falling away. A chilly

:12:02.:12:05.

end to the mouse, cold enough for ground frost in the rural spots of

:12:06.:12:10.

the countryside. Tomorrow shows a cold front approaching island,

:12:11.:12:15.

through the East high pressure keeps things dry and settled. A nice

:12:16.:12:21.

looking morning tomorrow. Breezy on the clean peninsula but dry and

:12:22.:12:26.

bright with plenty of sunshine. Across the rest of the UK, Scotland

:12:27.:12:30.

and Northern Ireland are cloudy with the few spots of rain. Some of that

:12:31.:12:36.

rain is heavy and windy here. The East stays dry, bright with sunny

:12:37.:12:40.

spells, temperatures up to 18 Celsius. Only 12 in Glasgow. It's

:12:41.:12:47.

looking dry tomorrow afternoon with patchy cloud and some more sunny

:12:48.:12:52.

spells. It's generally warmer than today, cooler in the North West and

:12:53.:12:58.

Coast. Find tomorrow evening, staying dry overnight, once again it

:12:59.:13:01.

will turn a little bit chilly in land with those of the Celsius.

:13:02.:13:07.

Thursday, a fine looking day maybe the odd spot of rain on Anglesey but

:13:08.:13:11.

no more than that. They will be some sunshine and if you cloud, it will

:13:12.:13:15.

stay fine on Friday with hazy sunshine staying warm over the

:13:16.:13:18.

weekend. Increasingly humid though, maybe one or two showers and God

:13:19.:13:21.

rumble of thunder. Thank you, Derek.

:13:22.:13:25.
