Drones are being increasingly used in our skies, but there's been

:00:00.:00:20.

a rise in complaints about them to police.

:00:21.:00:24.

Wales goes to the polls in the fifth National Assembly election.

:00:25.:00:30.

And, images of the First World War battle where so many Welshmen fell.

:00:31.:00:36.

The exhibition marking 100 years after Mametz Wood.

:00:37.:00:43.

BBC Wales has learned that complaints to police about drones

:00:44.:00:46.

have increased in most parts of the country.

:00:47.:00:49.

There were more than 50 incidents over the past year, but no serious

:00:50.:00:53.

Within the last few hours a task force has been set up to look

:00:54.:00:58.

at the growing issue of near misses between drones and larger

:00:59.:01:01.

A bird's eye view of Usk in Monmouthshire,

:01:02.:01:11.

They are often no bigger than a large laptop computer.

:01:12.:01:23.

Drones can be bought for less than ?100 now.

:01:24.:01:25.

The model this man flies costs a lot more.

:01:26.:01:28.

It has safety features, including one which prevents him

:01:29.:01:31.

Capturing industrial heritage and the landscapes here,

:01:32.:01:39.

he is always careful not to fly dangerously.

:01:40.:01:42.

When they came along, I could buy one.

:01:43.:01:46.

What I am concerned about is the prices are dropping so much,

:01:47.:01:52.

I hope they don't get into the hands of people who will misuse them.

:01:53.:01:55.

A so-called task force to look at the issue across Europe

:01:56.:02:01.

No near misses involving drones have been reported in Wales,

:02:02.:02:07.

and while complaints are low, they are increasing in most places.

:02:08.:02:12.

Gwent Police reported no incidents between 2011 and 2014,

:02:13.:02:16.

but in the past year there were 19 complaints.

:02:17.:02:19.

None which led to injury, and there were no prosecutions.

:02:20.:02:22.

South Wales Police have received 38 complaints in the past year,

:02:23.:02:27.

five warnings handed out about flying in prohibited areas.

:02:28.:02:32.

Dyfed-Powys Police has had nine complaints in the past year,

:02:33.:02:34.

Only North Wales Police did not see an increase,

:02:35.:02:39.

This man runs a company flying drones professionally.

:02:40.:02:45.

He has registered with the Civil Aviation Authority

:02:46.:02:47.

and trains others how to use them safely.

:02:48.:02:50.

You need to stay at least 50 metres away from people,

:02:51.:02:54.

objects, structures, cars that are not

:02:55.:02:57.

A lot of people don't know the rules, they don't know how

:02:58.:03:02.

important it is to understand how these things work.

:03:03.:03:05.

We have got to reach these people, that is the difficult bit.

:03:06.:03:10.

The message to owners, think carefully about

:03:11.:03:12.

The mother of 12-year-old Ryan Morse, who died at home

:03:13.:03:20.

in Brynithel three years ago, has been describing when he first

:03:21.:03:23.

became ill while giving evidence at the trial of two GPs accused

:03:24.:03:26.

Dr Lindsey Thomas and Dr Joanne Rudling, who saw Ryan at Abernant

:03:27.:03:34.

surgery in Abertillery, deny the charges of gross

:03:35.:03:36.

The trial continues at Cardiff Crown Court.

:03:37.:03:44.

The man behind a management buyout of Tata Steel says

:03:45.:03:46.

closing its pension scheme is in the best interest

:03:47.:03:48.

Stuart Wilkie told the BBC Excalibur Steel couldn't afford

:03:49.:03:53.

It's one of two bids to buy the UK operations, the other

:03:54.:03:59.

is from Liberty House, that have been formally

:04:00.:04:01.

Scientists at Cardiff University have created a portable

:04:02.:04:07.

blood-glucose measure for diabetics which uses microwaves instead

:04:08.:04:11.

The new monitor can be stuck onto the arm using an adhesive.

:04:12.:04:16.

The microwaves that power it are at much lower levels

:04:17.:04:19.

than the power used in domestic cooking.

:04:20.:04:24.

Voting has got underway in the National Assembly election.

:04:25.:04:27.

Elections are also taking place to choose Police

:04:28.:04:32.

Party leaders were out from early this morning

:04:33.:04:39.

Kirsty Williams from the Liberal Democrats,

:04:40.:04:43.

Nathan Gill from Ukip, Plaid Cymru's Leanne Wood,

:04:44.:04:46.

Carwyn Jones from Labour and Andrew RT Davies from the Conservatives.

:04:47.:04:52.

Wales is also electing four Police and Crime Commissioners.

:04:53.:05:01.

At the polling station you'll be given three different ballot papers.

:05:02.:05:04.

First is the constituency paper, where you put one cross

:05:05.:05:09.

for the candidate you want to represent your local area.

:05:10.:05:14.

On the regional ballot paper, you put one cross for the party

:05:15.:05:17.

or independent candidate you want to represent your region.

:05:18.:05:22.

To choose the Police and Crime Commissioner,

:05:23.:05:24.

You put one cross in each column, for your first and second

:05:25.:05:27.

There's also a parliamentary by-election taking place

:05:28.:05:32.

The polls close at 10pm, with the results expected in

:05:33.:05:38.

The battle of Mametz Wood was one of the bloodiest

:05:39.:05:44.

of the First World War, killing and injuring thousands

:05:45.:05:46.

July this year is the 100th anniversary of the battle,

:05:47.:05:52.

and as part of the commemorations a new exhibition is displaying some

:05:53.:05:56.

They are the images of a battle where so many Welshmen died.

:05:57.:06:07.

At Mametz Wood, 4,000 were killed or injured in a war that

:06:08.:06:10.

would eventually claim 8 million lives.

:06:11.:06:13.

The National Museum in Cardiff has brought together the art inspired

:06:14.:06:17.

by Mametz Wood to remind a new generation about

:06:18.:06:20.

War's Hell is the name of the exhibition, and this painting

:06:21.:06:26.

by the pacifist Christopher Williams aimed to convey the real hell

:06:27.:06:31.

It was painted shortly after the battle.

:06:32.:06:36.

The artist from Maesteg was not a soldier, but travelled

:06:37.:06:39.

to the Somme to paint a canvas that would hang in Downing Street

:06:40.:06:42.

He was a lifelong pacifist and member of the Fabian Society.

:06:43.:06:52.

To take on a commission like this was a big thing for him,

:06:53.:06:56.

but he had something he wanted to say.

:06:57.:06:59.

There are modern war artists, like Dan Peterson, who was a TA

:07:00.:07:02.

with the Parachute Regiment and who painted the Queen's Tribune Guards

:07:03.:07:06.

More recently he was with the Royal Navy as they rescued

:07:07.:07:11.

migrants in the Mediterranean, giving his own interpretation

:07:12.:07:15.

It is really important in the same way that poetry needs to be written,

:07:16.:07:22.

certain types of documentaries need to be made, and certain artists need

:07:23.:07:28.

to be allowed to give a different perspective.

:07:29.:07:33.

In military terms the battle of Mametz Wood was a success,

:07:34.:07:36.

gaining the ground for the British and forcing the Germans

:07:37.:07:38.

But the huge sacrifice paid by men from Wales remained among

:07:39.:07:44.

the darkest moments of the war and survives in art to remind

:07:45.:07:48.

us of the lives lost a hundred years on.

:07:49.:07:54.

Football, and Gareth Bale says he's turned a corner at Real Madrid

:07:55.:07:57.

after helping them reach a second Champions League final

:07:58.:07:59.

The Welsh forward's goal saw Real beat Manchester City 1-0 last night.

:08:00.:08:08.

It's been a beautiful morning for most of us.

:08:09.:08:10.

Benny, what's the weather like for the rest of the day?

:08:11.:08:15.

We can expect much more of the same. If anything, it is getting warmer as

:08:16.:08:24.

we head into the weekend. It stays dry today and tomorrow. Lots of

:08:25.:08:28.

sunshine as we go through the afternoon. The wind is light, it

:08:29.:08:32.

feels pleasantly warm, but we have high UV levels. Take care with that.

:08:33.:08:38.

The temperature is responding to the sunshine. We can look forward to

:08:39.:08:44.

some fine evening sunshine, but we have some high pollen levels.

:08:45.:08:53.

Tonight, it is sunny for a time. Once the sun sets, clear skies, the

:08:54.:08:57.

wind remains light, but it should not be as cold as the last few

:08:58.:09:01.

nights. Most of us will get away with a frost free night. Tomorrow,

:09:02.:09:06.

low-pressure starting to approach from the south. We can look forward

:09:07.:09:12.

to plenty of dry weather. First thing tomorrow, sunshine around,

:09:13.:09:15.

cloud will increase from the south, that will make the sunshine hazy,

:09:16.:09:22.

but it is another fine and warm day. The wind is like. Another quiet

:09:23.:09:30.

night to come tomorrow night. The odd coastal shower, but most of us

:09:31.:09:33.

can look forward to a dry night. Look at the overnight temperatures.

:09:34.:09:42.

We have some thundery showers in the forecast through Saturday, but by

:09:43.:09:48.

the afternoon, they will ease, looking hot and humid by the time we

:09:49.:09:49.

get to Sunday. I'll be back at 6:30pm with a full

:09:50.:09:51.

roundup of all the news. But from everyone on the lunchtime

:09:52.:09:54.

team, have a lovely afternoon.

:09:55.:09:57.
