That's all from the BBC News at Six. We can

:00:00.:00:00.

Neil Hamilton is elected leader of UKIP in the Assembly

:00:00.:00:08.

but his appointment has provoked a furious row within the party,

:00:09.:00:11.

with Nigel Farage describing the appointment as unjust.

:00:12.:00:15.

We are not handing out jobs for the boys, this is finding

:00:16.:00:21.

the person who best commands authority inside the Assembly.

:00:22.:00:42.

Still in the driving seat - Welsh Conservative leader Andrew RT

:00:43.:00:45.

Davies says his AMs back him despite a disappointing election.

:00:46.:00:50.

Ryan Morse could have been saved had two doctors referred him

:00:51.:00:55.

for emergency treatment, a court hears.

:00:56.:00:58.

Wrexham Council agrees to accept five Syrian refugee families over

:00:59.:01:03.

the next year but calls tonight that we should take more.

:01:04.:01:08.

To be honest, we won't even notice five families or 30 individuals.

:01:09.:01:12.

I am sure there is scope to do more than that.

:01:21.:01:29.

The former Conservative MP Neil Hamilton has been elected

:01:30.:01:33.

Ukip's leader in the National Assembly.

:01:34.:01:35.

Tonight, his appointment has been criticised by Nigel Farage,

:01:36.:01:38.

who described Neil Hamilton's victory as unjust and an act

:01:39.:01:42.

Mr Hamilton beat Nathan Gill to the role - the man who led

:01:43.:01:48.

the party to its election of seven AMs in last week's poll.

:01:49.:01:51.

Here's our political reporter Paul Martin.

:01:52.:02:00.

Ukip has made a great breakthrough today and I don't think that the

:02:01.:02:06.

politics of the Assembly will ever be the same again. Five days since

:02:07.:02:13.

the election and despite going from zero to seven seats, there has

:02:14.:02:18.

effectively been a coup at the top of Ukip Wales. Nathan Gill, who has

:02:19.:02:22.

run the party here for 18 months, will not lead the Assembly group.

:02:23.:02:27.

Neil Hamilton will. It has caused a huge split in the party. Nigel

:02:28.:02:31.

Farage attacked the decision, calling it unjust. But Neil Hamilton

:02:32.:02:37.

insists the group will be united. Most of us have known each other a

:02:38.:02:42.

very long time and personality differences apart, I don't think we

:02:43.:02:46.

will have any difficulty working together. I have been in politics a

:02:47.:02:50.

very long time and I have frequently lost the vote on issues on various

:02:51.:02:57.

things. I have had no difficulty in working with people who took a

:02:58.:03:02.

different view. Nathan Gill is still Ukip Wales leader. The role was

:03:03.:03:07.

given to him by Nigel Farage. But there are questions now over whether

:03:08.:03:11.

that is tenable. He was pretty despondent after the vote. It is

:03:12.:03:16.

slightly bizarre. Only Ukip can do this kind of thing. I have taken us

:03:17.:03:22.

to our greatest victory in domestic Latics and then the Assembly Members

:03:23.:03:27.

we got there, over half of them decided to replace me as leader of

:03:28.:03:35.

the group. He may be a new arrival in Cardiff Bay but Neil Hamilton is

:03:36.:03:39.

arguably the most recognisable Assembly Member. He was a junior

:03:40.:03:43.

minister in John Major's government but became synonymous with the cash

:03:44.:03:48.

for questions scandal in the 90s and lost his seat to Martin Bell in

:03:49.:03:52.

1997, despite denying any wrongdoing. He dropped the libel

:03:53.:03:57.

action against the Guardian newspaper and was ostracised from

:03:58.:04:02.

the Tory party. Since then he and his wife Christine have become known

:04:03.:04:06.

outside politics thanks to TV appearances with Ali G, Louis

:04:07.:04:11.

Theroux and in the jungle on I'm a celebrity. Now he has completed a

:04:12.:04:16.

political comeback. So who are the Ukip group and which way did they

:04:17.:04:21.

vote? Mark Reckless is a former Conservative MP who defected to Ukip

:04:22.:04:26.

on the eve of the Tory conference in 2014. He voted for Nathan Gill. So

:04:27.:04:32.

did Dave Rowlands. Michelle Brown, a lawyer and like Mr Gill represents

:04:33.:04:39.

North Wales, but Hamilton. So did Gareth Bennett, a former journalist

:04:40.:04:42.

whose controversial comments about immigrants in Cardiff led to calls

:04:43.:04:48.

for his deselection. Caroline Jones, a former teacher and prison service

:04:49.:04:52.

worker was the key vote. Both men this morning thought this morning

:04:53.:04:56.

they had her vote but only Neil Hamilton was right. There is anger

:04:57.:05:02.

amongst the grassroots to. One of the BBC's generation 16 group of

:05:03.:05:05.

voters has decided to quit the party. It is difficult enough being

:05:06.:05:10.

a young person at university supporting Ukip. Generally speaking,

:05:11.:05:16.

young people are pretty hostile towards Ukip. These actions make it

:05:17.:05:20.

impossible to defend the party. How can you defend this when you agree

:05:21.:05:23.

with the people who say he should never have been a candidate. Neil

:05:24.:05:29.

Hamilton's win has been given occasions for Ukip across Wales and

:05:30.:05:34.

the UK. Here it is now almost impossible to see him and Nathan

:05:35.:05:37.

Gill having a workable relationship. Mr Gill may consider his decision to

:05:38.:05:44.

stand down as an MEP and at a UK level this widens the divine between

:05:45.:05:50.

those who support Nigel Farage and those against him. Neil Hamilton

:05:51.:05:55.

will now see Cardiff as a power base for the anti-Nigel Farage group.

:05:56.:05:58.

Whatever the change of the guard at the top of UKIP, everything stays

:05:59.:06:01.

The leader of the party here, Andrew RT Davies, says he's making

:06:02.:06:06.

no excuses for the losses his party suffered in the Assembly election.

:06:07.:06:08.

In his first interview since the Tories dropped into third

:06:09.:06:12.

place behind Labour and Plaid Cymru, Mr Davies says many Conservative AMs

:06:13.:06:16.

have called for him to remain as leader for the next five years.

:06:17.:06:20.

He's been speaking to our political editor Nick Servini.

:06:21.:06:28.

He was a big presence and a big personality on the election campaign

:06:29.:06:34.

but Andrew RT Davies didn't guide his party to any victories in the

:06:35.:06:40.

marginal seats where they were up against labour, and as a result the

:06:41.:06:43.

Welsh Conservatives lost their status as the main opposition. He

:06:44.:06:48.

faced his fellow Tory Assembly Members for the first time

:06:49.:06:51.

yesterday, who gave him their support. To date he faced the

:06:52.:06:57.

cameras. Did you consider resigning? I think everyone in politics after

:06:58.:07:01.

an election considers what role they might play going forward. I have

:07:02.:07:05.

made no excuses for what has gone on. I have painted the picture as it

:07:06.:07:10.

is and ultimately, as leader, I take my share of responsibility. But I

:07:11.:07:15.

also take my share of pride in what we achieved in this election in

:07:16.:07:18.

those huge swings in Labour held seats. This is the first time the

:07:19.:07:23.

Conservatives have failed to make progress in an Assembly election. In

:07:24.:07:29.

1999, the party had nine members, it went up to 11 in 2003, 12 four years

:07:30.:07:37.

later and then up to 14 in 2011, before coming down to 11 last week.

:07:38.:07:44.

Mr Davies says a series of damaging reports in Westminster such as the

:07:45.:07:49.

Panama papers, and decisions on welfare reform, played badly for the

:07:50.:07:53.

party in Wales. The European referendum also cast a long shadow

:07:54.:07:58.

over the Tory campaign, including at the Welsh conference, where David

:07:59.:08:02.

Cameron's speech was dominated by warnings of the danger of Brexit for

:08:03.:08:08.

the farming industry, rather than dominated by talking up Andrew RT

:08:09.:08:12.

Davies as a future First Minister. Do you regret coming out in support

:08:13.:08:17.

of Brexit when you did? Not at all. I am passionate about what I believe

:08:18.:08:21.

in and I wear my heart on my sleeve. I will say honestly and openly when

:08:22.:08:26.

I think something is right or wrong. When people see me, they know I am

:08:27.:08:31.

telling the truth as it is. They might not like what I say and it is

:08:32.:08:35.

to them to make that judgment. You can't be happy with the way the

:08:36.:08:38.

Prime Minister responded in the conference? I think they would have

:08:39.:08:43.

been a better way of handling that in the conference. Andrew RT Davies

:08:44.:08:48.

has always been relaxed about whether he has more time to work on

:08:49.:08:53.

his farm. That will have to wait for now because, as things stand, he is

:08:54.:08:55.

still very much in the driving seat. Nick, it's been quite

:08:56.:08:58.

a day in Cardiff Bay. Extraordinary events. To any degree

:08:59.:09:07.

they would have been cohesiveness in this conservative group are now out

:09:08.:09:12.

the window. Even at this stage, there is talk of a potential

:09:13.:09:16.

permanent split in the group after the EU referendum and the Assembly

:09:17.:09:20.

has not even started sitting yet. In the middle of all this, we have got

:09:21.:09:26.

their UK politics being played out within the Ukip group at the

:09:27.:09:30.

Assembly. Those who work for Nathan Gill feel deeply hurt by what has

:09:31.:09:35.

gone on today. Nathan Gill is on the camp of Nigel Farage in all of this,

:09:36.:09:41.

in direct opposition to those who are in Neil Hamilton's side of

:09:42.:09:46.

things. There is a degree of irony, certainly in some of the comments

:09:47.:09:51.

today. For those on the Nigel Farage side accusing those on the Neil

:09:52.:09:55.

Hamilton side of following a personality cult as a result of

:09:56.:10:00.

this. In the middle of it all, barely concealed tension between

:10:01.:10:04.

Nigel Farage and Neil Hamilton. I spoke to Neil Hamilton earlier and

:10:05.:10:08.

asked him when did you last shake the hand of Nigel Farage. His

:10:09.:10:12.

response was that they should each other's throats. What can we expect

:10:13.:10:18.

for the rest of this week? Tomorrow will be the first full day of the

:10:19.:10:24.

Assembly. As well as the new Ukip members, there will be a really

:10:25.:10:28.

different feel for things. More than a third of all the Assembly Members

:10:29.:10:32.

will be new faces. I spoke last night about the lack of clarity

:10:33.:10:35.

about who is going to get the job of trying to control the new Assembly

:10:36.:10:41.

Members, the Presiding Officer, there are ten names being bandied

:10:42.:10:45.

around, but finally over the last two days we have had drama from

:10:46.:10:49.

Ukip, postmortem from the Conservative. For the rest of the

:10:50.:10:53.

week, it is about time we heard from the government and its plans for the

:10:54.:10:55.

future. Two doctors could have saved

:10:56.:10:57.

the life of a 12-year-old boy had they'd examined him and sent him

:10:58.:11:00.

for emergency treatment, A senior paediatrician said

:11:01.:11:03.

Ryan Morse from Brynithel in Blaneau Gwent had every chance

:11:04.:11:08.

of surviving the rare disease Dr Joanne Rudling and Dr Lindsey

:11:09.:11:11.

Thomas deny manslaughter Ryan Morse had been unwell for

:11:12.:11:30.

months. His mother made two calls to a GP surgery before the date -- the

:11:31.:11:35.

day before he died but he was not seen in person by a doctor. We now

:11:36.:11:39.

know he had Addison's disease, a problem with the adrenal gland,

:11:40.:11:44.

fatal if left untreated. An expert in Addison's degrees told the court

:11:45.:11:49.

's morning it was a very rare condition. Only spotting it was

:11:50.:11:59.

tricky. Symptoms are very similar to other illnesses but there was one

:12:00.:12:03.

hallmark. The darkening of skin in places really exposed to the sun. It

:12:04.:12:07.

was that symptom that Ryan's mother she said she passed on to GPs in the

:12:08.:12:14.

days and hours before her son died. Professor Hughes said the

:12:15.:12:17.

expectation would be, had he been given emergency treatment, there is

:12:18.:12:22.

every expectation based on my experience of treating people with

:12:23.:12:24.

Addison's disease that he would have survived. Dr Joanne Rudling saw Ryan

:12:25.:12:30.

a month before he died. His weight was not measured despite his

:12:31.:12:34.

mother's concerns. The court also heard evidence from a GB of some 41

:12:35.:12:40.

years experience. Ryan Morse was struggling with delirium before he

:12:41.:12:44.

died he was so unwell, something he said he had never witnessed in those

:12:45.:12:49.

circumstances before in his career. He said that, along with the

:12:50.:12:53.

symptoms of weight loss, discolouration of Ryan's skin and

:12:54.:12:57.

severe dehydration, should have been red flags for his GPs. Not

:12:58.:13:02.

necessarily to diagnose him with Addison's disease but to recognise

:13:03.:13:05.

that his life could be at risk and they should examine him

:13:06.:13:12.

face-to-face. He said the care Ryan received was extremely seriously

:13:13.:13:14.

below what could reasonably be expected from a competent general

:13:15.:13:19.

practitioner. Dr Joanne Rudling and Dr Lindsey Thomas deny manslaughter

:13:20.:13:21.

through gross negligence. The trial continues.

:13:22.:13:24.

The footballer Ched Evans will find out the date for his new rape trial

:13:25.:13:27.

The former Wales international had his conviction quashed

:13:28.:13:31.

He was released from jail in 2014 after serving half of his five-year

:13:32.:13:35.

sentence for raping a 19-year-old woman at a hotel in Rhuddlan.

:13:36.:13:40.

Councillors in Denbighshire are to seek approval from the Welsh

:13:41.:13:44.

government to suspend the Right to Buy' council-owned

:13:45.:13:47.

The county council says Right to Buy' has reduced its housing

:13:48.:13:52.

Wrexham Council has agreed to accept five Syrian refugee

:13:53.:14:01.

David Cameron has said up to 20,000 refugees will be coming

:14:02.:14:06.

But an open letter from religious and community groups has urged

:14:07.:14:12.

Matthew Richards is at St Giles' Church in Wrexham.

:14:13.:14:20.

The vicar here is one of 18 Christian and Muslim preachers

:14:21.:14:25.

who've signed the letter to Wrexham Council saying it needed

:14:26.:14:29.

to be more ambitious in helping people fleeing the Syrian conflict.

:14:30.:14:33.

The number being considered in Wrexham is broadly in line

:14:34.:14:37.

with other councils but the signatories

:14:38.:14:41.

Roman left Ukraine a decade ago and came to Britain.

:14:42.:14:48.

He moved to Wrexham where he helps refugees and asylum seekers

:14:49.:14:51.

He says those fleeing Syria would be welcomed by residents but that it's

:14:52.:14:57.

likely they may not make it their permanent home.

:14:58.:15:07.

People looking for a community, many people moved from Wrexham after they

:15:08.:15:20.

get status. They are moving to big cities. Liverpool, Manchester or

:15:21.:15:22.

London. All Welsh councils have agreed

:15:23.:15:25.

to take part in the Syrian relocation scheme announced

:15:26.:15:27.

by the Prime Minister. The UK will accept 20,000 refugees

:15:28.:15:29.

over the next five years. Some local authorities here have

:15:30.:15:32.

announced plans to accommodate So far, Swansea has agreed

:15:33.:15:35.

to house around 60. Anglesey will take ten,

:15:36.:15:40.

as will Neath Port Talbot, and two families will be

:15:41.:15:43.

housed in Caerphilly. Community and religious

:15:44.:15:46.

leaders in North Wales, including the Bishop of St Asaph,

:15:47.:15:48.

say Wrexham needs to increase When you think, for example, that

:15:49.:16:02.

Lebanon has taken a million refugees. They are next door to

:16:03.:16:08.

Syria, they are on the border, but the proportion, the amount of

:16:09.:16:13.

refugees they are prepared to take actually involves real sacrifice. To

:16:14.:16:17.

be honest, we won't even notice five families or 30 individuals. I am

:16:18.:16:22.

sure there is scope to do more than that.

:16:23.:16:23.

Wrexham councillors point to a long history where its doors have been

:16:24.:16:26.

opened to vulnerable people from around the world.

:16:27.:16:28.

Penley Hospital was established to treat Polish people injured

:16:29.:16:30.

in the Second World War and continued to treat their families.

:16:31.:16:33.

The town is the only dispersal area in north Wales for refugees

:16:34.:16:36.

The first Syrian families are likely to start arriving over

:16:37.:16:43.

And as we have seen, Wrexham is very multicultural. There are Polish

:16:44.:16:58.

supermarkets, Portuguese supermarkets -- Portuguese

:16:59.:17:01.

restaurant. And this cost would not be borne by taxpayers, it would come

:17:02.:17:06.

from the UK Government. We asked the council to take part in this piece

:17:07.:17:09.

but they did not have anybody available. But they have not ruled

:17:10.:17:12.

out allowing more people from Syria to come here. They will review the

:17:13.:17:15.

numbers in December. Much more to come

:17:16.:17:17.

before seven o'clock. Tom spent months sleeping rough,

:17:18.:17:19.

now he's learning to chef. The restaurant opening its doors

and it is tipping down with rain, it is not pleasant conditions,

:17:25.:17:28.

a day can feel like a week, a week can feel like a month

:17:29.:17:31.

and a month can feel like a year. There's just six weeks to go

between health, education, we are going to be competing

:19:06.:19:09.

against things like that and I think the government's understanding

:19:10.:19:13.

of the importance of food and the importance of being able

:19:14.:19:17.

to feed people in this country is not really going to be high

paces as a trainee chef. One day he hopes to have a full-time

job at a restaurant like this He hasn't come straight

:21:06.:21:09.

from catering college, I would not wish it on my worst

:21:10.:21:27.

enemy, being homeless. People say people my age live for the night but

:21:28.:21:31.

I did not live for the night because they were scary. Day and day goes by

:21:32.:21:38.

like nothing at all when you have a bed but when you are on the streets,

:21:39.:21:44.

a day can feel like a week, a week can feel like a month and a month

:21:45.:21:46.

can feel like a year. Tom is one of a number

:21:47.:21:48.

of young homeless people from the Merthyr Tydfil area

:21:49.:21:51.

who are being given the chance to swap life on the streets

:21:52.:21:53.

for training and qualifications It is so easy to get caught in the

:21:54.:22:02.

vicious circle of not getting a job because you haven't got the

:22:03.:22:08.

experience, so with what we are doing, it should look good on

:22:09.:22:10.

someone's CV. Many of the young trainees have

:22:11.:22:12.

spent time at this homeless shelter, just a stone's throw

:22:13.:22:15.

from the restaurant. The charity that runs it says it's

:22:16.:22:17.

concerned about the number of young people in the area

:22:18.:22:20.

who are sleeping rough. People generally stay away from

:22:21.:22:30.

where they are going to be visible and therefore vulnerable. If you

:22:31.:22:35.

have got no other alternative, they are going to do it out of sight.

:22:36.:22:40.

They are going to pitch a tent, they are going to stay in their car, we

:22:41.:22:43.

found people staying in a cave. Josh is just 20 years old and knows

:22:44.:22:44.

all too well what it's But he says working

:22:45.:22:47.

at the restaurant is Everything keeps on getting better

:22:48.:22:59.

in life for me. I don't see myself going back into the past I was in,

:23:00.:23:03.

because it was pretty bad. If you really want to do it, just go for

:23:04.:23:08.

it. Nothing can hold you back. Just do it.

:23:09.:23:10.

All the young people working are being given the skills

:23:11.:23:12.

and experience that could one day lead to a permanent, full-time job.

:23:13.:23:15.

A chance to see clearly what life is like off the streets.

:23:16.:23:18.

Rugby, and Sam Warburton will lead an experienced Wales squad

:23:19.:23:23.

for their tests against England and New Zealand this Summer,

:23:24.:23:25.

Coach Warren Gatland hasn't chosen a direct replacement for open-side

:23:26.:23:30.

flanker Justin Tipuric, instead he's opted for

:23:31.:23:33.

Josh Turnbull, James King and Ross Moriarty as back-row cover.

:23:34.:23:40.

I think it says it all about how tough it is going to be in terms

:23:41.:23:44.

of the experience we have picked in the squad.

:23:45.:23:46.

I don't think New Zealand is probably the best place to be

:23:47.:23:50.

blooding youngsters in terms of confidence so we have gone

:23:51.:23:53.

for the most experienced team we could pick.

:23:54.:23:58.

A huge summer of sport ahead of course.

:23:59.:24:07.

Swansea City are set to offer the head coach Francesco Guidolin a new

:24:08.:24:13.

contract when the board meets tomorrow.

:24:14.:24:16.

until Wales' football side play their opening

:24:17.:24:19.

On Wales today tomorrow evening, join me in Brittany.

:24:20.:24:25.

This will be the base for the Wales football squad this summer,

:24:26.:24:31.

where the likes of Gareth Bale, Ashley Williams and Aaron Ramsey

:24:32.:24:34.

will be preparing and relaxing during their Euro 2016 campaign.

:24:35.:24:41.

And just before the weather, take a look at this.

:24:42.:24:43.

Britain's biggest ever gold nugget has been found off

:24:44.:24:46.

It's worth ?50,000 and was found by prospector Vincent Thurkettle.

:24:47.:24:52.

The 97 gram nugget is believed to be part of a ?120 million haul of gold,

:24:53.:24:57.

which sank with the ship the Royal Charter near Moelfre in 1859.

:24:58.:25:04.

Sue Charles is here with the weather forecast now.

:25:05.:25:07.

After the warmth of the weekend, it's still very humid but also

:25:08.:25:11.

unsettled with further rain at times tomorrow.

:25:12.:25:14.

Tonight, outbreaks of rain continue for a time.

:25:15.:25:16.

A warning some could be heavy, potentially thundery,

:25:17.:25:19.

Some mist and fog patches developing and remaining very mild again

:25:20.:25:24.

The chart shows this weather front, which brought today's rain,

:25:25.:25:31.

lingering across Wales tomorrow as well.

:25:32.:25:33.

So early mist and murk tomorrow, some sea fog,

:25:34.:25:37.

Generally clearing later to leave some drier spells.

:25:38.:25:43.

Some brightness too and still milder than average for May at 15 Celsius

:25:44.:25:46.

Tomorrow night, outbreaks of rain continue on and off,

:25:47.:25:53.

some dry spells, but another cloudy misty and muggy night

:25:54.:25:56.

with temperatures holding up in double figures.

:25:57.:26:00.

We see some changes later in the week.

:26:01.:26:02.

That front clears, these isobars straighten out,

:26:03.:26:05.

We lose the humid, moist air and a drier but colder air

:26:06.:26:10.

On Thursday, early showers will ease, generally turning drier

:26:11.:26:15.

Still a risk of a shower later but also feeling quite warm

:26:16.:26:22.

Generally looking drier everywhere by Friday and brighter with long

:26:23.:26:29.

sunny spells, but feeling noticeably fresher in that breeze.

:26:30.:26:34.

So a couple of humid, changeable days to come

:26:35.:26:37.

Then rain easing later in the week, starting to turn

:26:38.:26:42.

We introduce the fresher air by Friday and Saturday.

:26:43.:26:47.

Looking drier but cooler over the weekend but still feeling

:26:48.:26:50.

The headlines again. Neil Hamilton has been elected Ukip's leader in

:26:51.:27:07.

the National Assembly. His appointment has been criticised by

:27:08.:27:12.

Nigel Farage, who described it as unjust. Mr Hamilton beat Nathan Gill

:27:13.:27:17.

to the role, the man who led Ukip to a selection of seven Assembly

:27:18.:27:23.

Members in the election. Nigel has worked with Nathan in the

:27:24.:27:27.

European Parliament but this is not the European Parliament, it is the

:27:28.:27:28.

Wales Assembly. We'll have an update

:27:29.:27:34.

for you here at 8pm and again From all of us on the programme,

:27:35.:27:36.

good evening.
