As Welsh steelworkers rally in London for more support - | :00:08. | :00:10.
the government considers changes to their pension scheme. | :00:11. | :00:12.
And a jury hears Finlay Thomas was murdered by his mother's boyfriend - | :00:13. | :00:15.
The UK government is considering cuts to British | :00:16. | :00:39.
It comes after concerns that the fund - and its | :00:40. | :00:42.
?500 million deficit - are an obstacle for | :00:43. | :00:51.
Ministers are expected to announce a consultation | :00:52. | :00:53.
Meanwhile Tata is still assessing bids for its British operations, | :00:54. | :00:57.
And today, hundreds of steelworkers gathered in London, to urge | :00:58. | :01:01.
the UK government to give the industry more support. | :01:02. | :01:03.
Here's our Business Correspondent, Brian Meechan. | :01:04. | :01:16.
The ?500 million deficit in the pension scheme has been a troubling | :01:17. | :01:21.
issue threatening to derail any attempts to sell the business. The | :01:22. | :01:26.
UK Government are looking at a legal change meaning less money for those | :01:27. | :01:30.
who pay into the scheme but also making a sale easier or encouraging | :01:31. | :01:36.
them not to sell at all. It is the latest twist in another eventful | :01:37. | :01:37.
day. Steelworkers from Wales joined | :01:38. | :01:37.
colleagues to take their message As well as a strategy to help | :01:38. | :01:41.
traditional industries, they want ministers to ensure that | :01:42. | :01:45.
Tata remains a responsible seller. But these workers will have to wait | :01:46. | :01:48.
a bit longer to find out which of the several bidders | :01:49. | :01:51.
will progress to the next stage Union members at the rally say | :01:52. | :01:54.
they have a lot to offer buyers. We've got the best | :01:55. | :01:58.
workforce in Wales. We believe, we passionately believe | :01:59. | :02:03.
that we've got a long-term Steel and Port Talbot go | :02:04. | :02:06.
hand-in-hand. This town was built | :02:07. | :02:10.
in the steel industry. Without it the town would die, | :02:11. | :02:13.
a ghost town. Thousands of residents relying | :02:14. | :02:15.
on the steel so much. It's a rare sight to see | :02:16. | :02:24.
a Conservative Government minister We have looked at everything, | :02:25. | :02:26.
and continue to look at everything, because we want to make sure | :02:27. | :02:33.
that they stay open. The business secretary, Sajid Javid, | :02:34. | :02:36.
has been in Mumbai meeting the company's bosses ahead | :02:37. | :02:42.
of the board meeting According to the UK government, | :02:43. | :02:43.
discussions are positive but there Tata bosses say the | :02:44. | :02:50.
process is ongoing. At all points in time we have been | :02:51. | :02:56.
working closely with the British government both at the central level | :02:57. | :02:59.
with the Business Minister and regional level in | :03:00. | :03:02.
the Welsh government. I think, fundamentally, | :03:03. | :03:09.
the premise of conversation is how to make this | :03:10. | :03:15.
into an orderly transaction. Carwyn Jones also went to Mumbai | :03:16. | :03:20.
to meet Tata bosses after first He surprised many by saying | :03:21. | :03:23.
the Excalibur management buyout bid to takeover the company didn't yet | :03:24. | :03:30.
have the funding it needed and he would like to see them | :03:31. | :03:33.
working with the Liberty bid. The first minister is also raising | :03:34. | :03:36.
concerns about the deficit It's for them to decide how they | :03:37. | :03:50.
want to work together or not but what I want to see is thence that | :03:51. | :03:53.
are sustainable and that will provide a future. | :03:54. | :03:55.
So the wait goes on for the workers but it's clear they'll continue | :03:56. | :03:58.
to make their voices heard as this sales process marches on. | :03:59. | :04:02.
A jury at Cardiff Crown Court has been hearing how a 17-month-old | :04:03. | :04:05.
toddler from the Rhondda was murdered in a "deliberate | :04:06. | :04:07.
Prosecutors say Finley Thomas was killed by his mother's boyfriend | :04:08. | :04:13.
Sean Buckley denies murder, and both he and Chloe Thomas | :04:14. | :04:18.
Finlay Thomas lived for just 17 months. | :04:19. | :04:28.
The toddler's life ended abruptly following incident at his home | :04:29. | :04:31.
in this street in Clydach Vale, near Tonypandy. | :04:32. | :04:34.
He lived in the house with his mother, Chloe Thomas, | :04:35. | :04:36.
When ambulances were called to the house on the afternoon | :04:37. | :04:42.
of the 23rd of September 2014 paramedics were told | :04:43. | :04:44.
by Sean Buckley that Finlay had fallen down the stairs. | :04:45. | :04:49.
Adding that he had done it before, not so long ago. | :04:50. | :04:53.
Finlay was taken to the local hospital, but later died | :04:54. | :04:55.
after being transferred to the University Hospital | :04:56. | :04:57.
A postmortem examination gave his cause of death | :04:58. | :04:59.
The prosecutor, Roger Thomas, told the jury at Cardiff Crown Court | :05:00. | :05:07.
that medical experts believe the severity of Finlay's brain | :05:08. | :05:09.
injury meant it was highly unlikely it was caused by a simple fall down | :05:10. | :05:14.
the stairs in a house in this street. | :05:15. | :05:20.
He said it was more typically seen in abuse caused by shaking | :05:21. | :05:22.
He told the court this was not caused by an accident, | :05:23. | :05:26.
but a deliberate and vicious act by Sean Buckley, | :05:27. | :05:28.
who had given a deceitful and manufactured account | :05:29. | :05:30.
of what happened, assisted by the lies and support | :05:31. | :05:32.
Cardiff Crown Court heard that doctors who examined Finlay's body | :05:33. | :05:38.
found previous multiple bleeds and injuries to his head and spine. | :05:39. | :05:43.
A garden chair was produced as an exhibit, and the jury was told | :05:44. | :05:46.
the toddler also had injuries consistent with him either | :05:47. | :05:48.
being struck with it, or struck against it. | :05:49. | :05:53.
There was also evidence of bleeding to his eyes, | :05:54. | :05:55.
As the case was outlined to the jury, Sean Buckley | :05:56. | :06:06.
But Finley's mother often broke down in tears as she sat | :06:07. | :06:10.
Sean Buckley denies murder, both he and Chloe Thomas deny | :06:11. | :06:14.
cruelty to a child under the age of 16. | :06:15. | :06:16.
The case is expected to last up to five weeks. | :06:17. | :06:18.
Nick Palitt, BBC Wales Today, Cardiff Crown Court. | :06:19. | :06:22.
The performance of the Welsh Ambulance Service has improved - | :06:23. | :06:24.
after a deterioration in response times during the winter. | :06:25. | :06:26.
In April - 71% of emergency vehicles responded to immediately | :06:27. | :06:29.
life-threatening calls within eight minutes - that's up | :06:30. | :06:30.
The target is that 65% of ambulances should get to so called 'red | :06:31. | :06:35.
Black and minority ethnic communities in Wales do not think | :06:36. | :06:49.
the EU referendum is 'for them', according to a campaign group. | :06:50. | :06:54.
Simon Woolley, from Operation Black Vote, | :06:55. | :06:56.
which has taken a neutral stance on the referendum, says communities | :06:57. | :07:03.
Mr Woolley said he was disappointed at the turnout for its voter | :07:04. | :07:08.
registration event in Barry in the Vale of Glamorgan this evening. | :07:09. | :07:11.
Just the local assembly member and two members | :07:12. | :07:13.
There is a disproportionality in minority communities | :07:14. | :07:18.
engaging in this debate and politics in general. | :07:19. | :07:20.
It belongs to us, the debate is enriched by our involvement | :07:21. | :07:23.
and I would also say that our involvement should | :07:24. | :07:25.
and could quell some of the toxicity that is out there particularly | :07:26. | :07:28.
is the Wales striker Tom Bradshaw is out of contention for you go to | :07:29. | :07:51.
extreme with a calf injury. He will now leave the training camp in | :07:52. | :07:53.
Portugal. Another notable absentee is Gareth Bale. Joe Ledley has been | :07:54. | :08:00.
training with the Wales squad a fortnight after fracturing his leg. | :08:01. | :08:09.
We will be able to increase his Lord and tolerance as the days go by and | :08:10. | :08:13.
hopefully by the end of the week, that is where we want to be and it | :08:14. | :08:17.
allows him to be named to the squad. We will be looking to drop him and | :08:18. | :08:19.
at some point in the week. Well, we're in for a bit | :08:20. | :08:25.
of a mixed day tomorrow. Time to get the weather forecast | :08:26. | :08:27.
now, with Behnaz Akhgar. It's been a pretty cool and cloudy | :08:28. | :08:28.
day and we will hang A little bit of rain | :08:29. | :08:31.
across North Wales, light Further south, drier and cloudy | :08:32. | :08:35.
and the temperature and not The weather front lingering | :08:36. | :08:40.
into the north of Wales and gradually pushing northwards | :08:41. | :08:43.
tomorrow and becoming drier from the south, | :08:44. | :08:44.
certainly an improvement tomorrow. More in the way of sunshine building | :08:45. | :08:47.
from the south as the rain clearing, | :08:48. | :08:50.
some hints of brightness and a few showers as we head | :08:51. | :08:54.
into the afternoon. For the rest of the British Isles | :08:55. | :08:56.
we have the rain map pushing northwards and the further south | :08:57. | :08:59.
and west you go, dry The temperature getting up | :09:00. | :09:02.
to 21 in London. Here in Wales, the risk of a few | :09:03. | :09:06.
showers and some sunshine to ensure the temperature is warmer than today | :09:07. | :09:10.
and ranging between 13 and 17. Through tomorrow night those showers | :09:11. | :09:17.
all clear and we see some mist and fog forming with the temperature | :09:18. | :09:19.
dropping a little bit Through Friday, some sunshine | :09:20. | :09:22.
to look forward to but also the risk of a few showers which can be heavy | :09:23. | :09:30.
and thundery, feeling warmer Creeping up into the weekend | :09:31. | :09:33.
and more sunshine on offer on Saturday, highs of around 18 | :09:34. | :09:39.
but still a risk of showers. Fewer showers and to | :09:40. | :09:50.
Sunday and Monday more We're back in Breakfast | :09:51. | :09:52.
with updates from 6.25 From me and all of us | :09:53. | :09:56.
on the programme, good night. | :09:57. | :10:00. |
