Tonight's headlines: These men were jailed for 'modern slavery'.

:00:00.:00:08.

Their victim tells us how he was beaten, controlled

:00:09.:00:10.

And after his rape conviction was quashed, former Wales

:00:11.:00:15.

international football Ched Evans will face a retrial in October.

:00:16.:00:35.

For more than two decades he was kept a slave,

:00:36.:00:41.

controlled, beaten and kidnapped when he managed to escape.

:00:42.:00:43.

Now, after these three men were convicted of forcing him

:00:44.:00:46.

to work against his will, Michael Hughes has spoken

:00:47.:00:48.

about his experience for the first time.

:00:49.:00:51.

Caroline Evans has this exclusive report.

:00:52.:00:53.

For legal reasons we're not allowed to show his face and his words

:00:54.:00:56.

are spoken by a member of our production team.

:00:57.:01:01.

He arrived in Cardiff looking for a better life,

:01:02.:01:03.

took up the offer of work but what happened is

:01:04.:01:05.

He says he was traded from one person to another.

:01:06.:01:11.

They just confided in themselves and said, look, I've got

:01:12.:01:27.

How much are you going to give me for him?

:01:28.:01:31.

They always promised better and better but they said

:01:32.:01:45.

they would get me somewhere to live, nice caravan

:01:46.:01:47.

But I ended up in a garden shed.

:01:48.:01:54.

Tell me about the types of conditions that you lived

:01:55.:01:56.

I stayed in a garden shed till it was rotted away.

:01:57.:02:04.

No toilet. No running water.

:02:05.:02:09.

If I needed the toilet, I had to go in a field.

:02:10.:02:15.

Last week, three men were convicted of forcing Michael Hughes

:02:16.:02:17.

The judge at Cardiff Crown Court told them he had been

:02:18.:02:23.

Paddy Connors he said, had kidnapped him

:02:24.:02:29.

in order to bring his slave back to him.

:02:30.:02:32.

I was bundled into the boot of a car and taken all the way

:02:33.:02:37.

I was brought back to exactly the same place

:02:38.:02:42.

it took me five days to get away from there.

:02:43.:02:45.

I never had a life. I tried escaping.

:02:46.:03:03.

They said, you try escaping again, we will get rid of you, and no

:03:04.:03:07.

It's just you don't feel like anything really,

:03:08.:03:11.

Chief Superintendent Paul Griffiths, who led the investigation, said

:03:12.:03:16.

supporting victims is a priority for the officers involved.

:03:17.:03:18.

They are crimes of a serious nature that occurred in our society

:03:19.:03:25.

but in my experience, I cannot recall a crime occurring

:03:26.:03:31.

for such a long period of time and that has certainly affected

:03:32.:03:36.

the officers concerned, in terms of how they felt towards the victim,

:03:37.:03:40.

the support that was necessary and to make sure the offenders

:03:41.:03:45.

Michael Hughes said he shared his story with me to give others hope.

:03:46.:03:49.

If there are any others out there, please come forward

:03:50.:03:52.

because the police will believe your story.

:03:53.:03:56.

I didn't think I would ever get any help.

:03:57.:03:59.

It took me 26 years to come across but they will help you.

:04:00.:04:03.

That is what I have come to realise now.

:04:04.:04:12.

The former Wales International footballer, Ched Evans,

:04:13.:04:14.

will face a retrial for rape at the beginning of October.

:04:15.:04:18.

The date was set at a hearing in Cardiff this morning.

:04:19.:04:21.

His original rape conviction from 2012 was quashed by the Court

:04:22.:04:25.

Ched Evans arrived at Cardiff Crown Court today

:04:26.:04:32.

for a short hearing to find out about the details of his retrial.

:04:33.:04:35.

It was ordered last month after his original rape conviction

:04:36.:04:39.

After a night out in Rhyl in 2011, he was accused of raping

:04:40.:04:46.

He was convicted the following year but always protested his innocence.

:04:47.:04:51.

He was released in 2014, after he served half of a five

:04:52.:04:55.

Before his conviction, he'd been a promising striker,

:04:56.:04:59.

a record ?3 million signing for Sheffield United.

:05:00.:05:03.

Called up to the Wales squad in 2008, he had 13

:05:04.:05:06.

Once released from jail, it seemed he would not be able

:05:07.:05:11.

Athletics star Jessica Ennis-Hill threatened to pull her support

:05:12.:05:15.

from Sheffield United, if they allowed him to play again.

:05:16.:05:18.

And pressure from sponsors stopped Oldham United from signing him.

:05:19.:05:21.

After a ten month investigation, he successfully appealed his

:05:22.:05:24.

original conviction and has been granted a new trial.

:05:25.:05:29.

Ched Evans spoke only to say his name and plead not guilty.

:05:30.:05:33.

He was told his case will be heard on the 4th of October and it will be

:05:34.:05:38.

Nick Palit, BBC Wales Today, Cardiff Crown Court.

:05:39.:05:48.

Police are investigating a series of hoax bomb-threats made

:05:49.:05:50.

Whitchurch High School in Cardiff was evacuated

:05:51.:05:57.

as a precaution this morning, with officers dealing

:05:58.:05:59.

Police say it was one of a series of malicious hoax communications

:06:00.:06:03.

They say they take hoaxes extremely seriously.

:06:04.:06:10.

A man who preyed on drunken female students in Cardiff and other

:06:11.:06:13.

university cities will serve at least 12 years behind

:06:14.:06:16.

bars for his crimes, including attempted rape

:06:17.:06:18.

40-year -old Tahir Nazir, obtained a fake university ID card

:06:19.:06:25.

and trawled the internet looking for student nights.

:06:26.:06:28.

South Wales Police praised the courage of his victim

:06:29.:06:30.

in Cardiff, and her housemates, who gave evidence at

:06:31.:06:32.

Rugby, and Dan Lydiate will captain Wales in the absence of the injured

:06:33.:06:37.

Sam Warburton against England at Twickenham on Sunday.

:06:38.:06:41.

Lock Alun Wyn Jones returns from injury.

:06:42.:06:44.

There's one change in the backs from the side that beat

:06:45.:06:46.

Italy in the 6 Nations, with Scott Williams partnering

:06:47.:06:49.

Coach Warren Gatland says it's an important game ahead of three

:06:50.:06:53.

tests against world champions New Zealand next month.

:06:54.:06:58.

Sometimes you go into the southern hemisphere and play the first test

:06:59.:07:02.

match with guys who haven't played for four or five weeks, if they were

:07:03.:07:05.

lucky enough to come straight out of the finals.

:07:06.:07:08.

So we just felt this game was a game to try and get us up

:07:09.:07:11.

to speed, deal with what we were going to encounter in the southern

:07:12.:07:15.

Football, it's a big weekend for Gareth Bale and a nervous

:07:16.:07:20.

one for the rest of us, hoping he'll emerge from the

:07:21.:07:23.

His Real Madrid side take on Athletico Madrid.

:07:24.:07:27.

Bale is aiming to emulate Ryan Giggs and Joey Jones,

:07:28.:07:31.

the Welshmen who've won the European Cup twice.

:07:32.:07:33.

He scored to help Real win the Cup two years ago.

:07:34.:07:38.

Flash flooding has been causing problems this evening.

:07:39.:07:39.

The A40 was closed between Llandovery and Sennybridge in Powys

:07:40.:07:42.

after tonnes of debris was washed down a hillside.

:07:43.:07:46.

And earlier, thunderstorms caused powercuts in

:07:47.:07:48.

It doesn't seem to bode well for the bank holiday Sue?

:07:49.:07:54.

Overnight a few showers pushing up from the south.

:07:55.:08:06.

A warning that some could still be thundery, easing

:08:07.:08:13.

through the night with some mist patches and a milder, quite muggy

:08:14.:08:20.

night, temperatures remaining in double figures for most.

:08:21.:08:24.

Tomorrow, we've got these low pressure systems

:08:25.:08:26.

circling around the UK meaning the shower risk

:08:27.:08:28.

Early low cloud and mist will gradually lift and break, then it's

:08:29.:08:34.

Showers are more likely in the southern half of the UK

:08:35.:08:41.

tomorrow, with a warning that the humidity

:08:42.:08:43.

could trigger the odd thunder shower.

:08:44.:08:45.

Variable cloud, the best of the dry and bright weather further

:08:46.:08:48.

north, cooler here, 13 Celsius in southern Scotland and 22 in South

:08:49.:08:51.

Hit and miss showers later tomorrow in Wales, sunny

:08:52.:08:58.

spells in between, like winds with highs of 15

:08:59.:09:00.

Tomorrow night, still a few showers, which could be

:09:01.:09:04.

heavy at times before they gradually ease away.

:09:05.:09:06.

Clear spells and light winds allow mist and coastal fog to

:09:07.:09:09.

Lows are between seven and 12 Celsius.

:09:10.:09:16.

So the weekend those low-pressure systems should move

:09:17.:09:18.

eastwards allowing high pressure to build from the West.

:09:19.:09:20.

So sunny spells and just a few later showers on Sunday, warming up

:09:21.:09:24.

with temperatures in the high teens everywhere.

:09:25.:09:27.

A few places possibly reaching the low 20s.

:09:28.:09:29.

Similar on Monday, sunny spells, mostly fine

:09:30.:09:31.

Cloud and rain spreading from east on Monday night into Tuesday.

:09:32.:09:47.

A real mix and feeling warmer everywhere, settling down by the

:09:48.:09:51.
